GREETINGS FROM THE MAYOR OF LUGANO

Qualcuno potrebbe pensare che il periodo invernale porti con sé un certo torpore anche nelle proposte di intrattenimento di una città... niente di più fuorviante, perché Lugano ha saputo estendere la propria offerta turistica anche in questo periodo, proponendo numerose attività culturali e ricreative rivolte ad ogni età, con particolare attenzione ai giovani e alle famiglie.

Io credo che una comunità possa trovare la sua stare insieme e condividere le stesse esperienze. Lugano Winter è certamente un grande palco, dove tutte le forme artistiche e di intrattenimento diventano le assolute protagoniste: la musica, il di tutta la programmazione dei mesi invernali.

Sono molto sentiti i ringraziamenti a tutti i promotori e gli organizzatori di eventi che, con grande entusiasmo, hanno contribuito a rendere così ricca l’offerta di eventi per la stagione invernale, confermando Lugano un luogo attrattivo per i cittadini e per i tanti ospiti che soggiornano nella nostra città.

Some people might think that winter brings a kind of sluggishness in the City entertainment proposals as well… nothing could be more wrong! Lugano was able to broaden its tourist appeal also during the cold season by proposing plenty of cultural and entertainment activities to people of all ages, with a special attention to young people and families.

n my opinion, a community can nd its unity if there are places and moments to spend time together and share the same experiences. Lugano inter is de nitely a great stage where all forms of art and entertainment such as music, theatre, dance and sports will be the leading thread of the winter season programming.

I wish to thank all the promoters and organizers who, with great enthusiasm, have contributed to such a rich offering.

IL MERCATINO DI NATALE

-A magical world beloved by children and adults alike. The pleasure of spending time together, of buying presents at the Christmas market or in boutiques. Lugano offers over a month of special events along its downtown streets to make the Christmas season a great joy for all.

The skating rink is open every day until January 6th. Entrance is free and if you don’t have your own skates, you can rent them right there. All through the Advent period, on Saturdays and Sundays afternoon, there will be funny shows for children and their families.

During the Advent, on Riforma square a variety of chalets will offer plenty of gastronomic specialties. Among them, a special chalet for gourmets with dishes cooked by some of Ticino’s most renowned chefs. To help us plunge into the joyful Christmas atmosphere, there will also be a variety of wooden cottages offering Christmas items, decorations and original gift ideas.

GREAT PRIZE CONTEST

In December the Association of Lugano’s Shop Owners will hold its traditional prize contest. It’ll be possible to win purchase vouchers worth 1500, 1000 and 500 CHF. You can participate by simply lling in a card that you’ll nd in the af liated shops. The prizes will be drawn mid January.

The Christmas market will take over the pedestrian area offering gastronomic specialties, arts and crafts, precious fabrics, oriental scents and charitable initiatives. From 1-12 Dec., Riforma and Manzoni squares and part of Nassa road will host over 30 stalls. From Dec. 13, the market will stretch to Soave, Pessina and Magatti streets up to the Dante square, with over 100 stalls.

The lighting of the city's tallest Christmas tree. A really enthralling event, especially for children. Accompanied by a gospel choir, Julie Arlin and the city Mayor Marco Borradori will light the tree with the help of some of the present children.

DA MACELLO A PARADISO

L’atelier Blumer dell’Accademia di architettura di Mendrisio in collaborazione con l’Istituto di Studi italiani dell’USI, e la scuola universitaria del Conservatorio della Svizzera italiana presentano un’istallazione luminosa dedicata alla terza cantica di Dante. L’atelier Blumer ha realizzato 19 luminarie, per un totale di 11.000 lam-

disposte all’interno della navata principale dell’Ex Macello di Lugano. La presentazione dell’opera sarà accompagnata dalle musiche realizzate dal corso di composizione di Nadir Vassena del Conservatorio con un sistema audio multicanale. Contestualmente all’evento,

che gode del supporto dell’Area Turismo ed Eventi della Città di Lugano, verrà allestita un’esposizione che racconta il processo e lavoro svolto.

The Academy of Architecture of Mendrisio (AAM), in collaboration with the Institute of Italian Studies of the Italian-speaking area of Switzerland and the Lugano Conservatory will present an installation realized with the Apulian lighting techniques by the atelier Blumer within the master course at the AAM and dedicated to Dante’s third cantica. The Lugano Conservatory will set the presentation to music during the course by Nadir Vassena, using an innovative 3D homophonic audio system based upon a very peculiar perception of sound.

HISTORY

Lugano is of ancient origins and its rst documented traces date back to the 9th century. Lugano and its Pievi, which were the object of unremitting ducal disputes (Como and Milan), came under the dominion of the Swiss in 1513. The dominion lasted until 1798, when Lugano, boosted by the great European upheavals, claimed and obtained independence, thus becoming part of the Swiss Confederation.

SHOPPING

Via Nassa, one of Lugano’s historical streets with its elegant and sophisticated stores, is considered the shopping street par excellence. Along the 270-meter long ancient porticoes you can nd the most exclusive jewelleries, clothing, gastronomy and antique shops and much more.

In this part of Lugano I nd all kinds of boutiques and shops. The nearby supermarket and Balestra parking place makes my shopping much easier. The bus terminal is also just a few steps away.

On the west side of Piazza Dante and Piazza Cioccaro Lugano goes uphill towards the railway station. We suggest you go up along two very characteristic streets: Salita Mario and Antonio Chiattone and Via Cattedrale. On both sides of the two streets, you will nd many small boutiques, artisans’ jewellery shops, art galleries, antique shops, gift shops and various picturesque corners. This typically Ticinese area has an atmosphere of its own and is very lively. Salita Chiattone and Via Cattedrale join at the top, close to the San Lorenzo Cathedral. Here you will also nd Via Bertaccio, where many other shops await you.

A city corner at just a short walking distance from the Piazza, but with a character of its own. The feeling is that of being in an intimate setting where everybody knows each other, though lacking anything! After the shopping, there is always time for a coffee or a drink in one of the many bars.

I love eating the typical dishes of the local cuisine, as risotto, polenta, potatoes and game specialities. It’s even better when you are with friends and when a glass of ne Ticino Merlot and a slice of cake for dessert accompany the dishes. Fortunately, there are plenty of excellent “grotti” in the region!

Lugano offers a wide choice of high quality food and wines. The proximity to Italy has undoubtedly in uenced the cuisine of Canton Ticino and thus contributed to develop its gastronomy. In Lugano you can eat and drink well virtually anywhere and on any budget (I am not speaking only in terms of haute cuisine but I also mean normal restaurants, pizzerias and sandwich bars). Many hotels in town also signi cantly played their part in achieving this result by offering top quality dishes. All this, together with other initiatives dedicated to the art of cooking enrich the offer for all gourmets who wish to visit Ticino, but also for all the Ticinese, known to be people who enjoy good food. Eating well is vital not only for our body and soul, but for our economy as well, and namely for the tourism industry. Good food and wine are one of the key reasons for choosing a holiday destination and Lugano is willing and ready to please everyone!

The proximity to Italy, as well as the in uence of the Mediterranean cuisine, is noticeable in many restaurants and pizzerias. Good food lovers will certainly not be disappointed by the culinary proposals in Switzerland’s sunny Canton! I love vegetarian food, and when I decide not to cook and to go out for dinner, I like to choose restaurants who offer this kind of food in a creative and imaginative way. I hope that there will be more and more restaurants offering vegetarian dishes in our region.

The Brè District, together with the Aldesago hamlet, located at an altitude of 788 meters above the sea level, is one of the sunniest spots in Ticino. Narrow cobblestone streets winding among old stone houses and small gardens characterize the heart of the village. Entering the village, there is an old stone washhouse, one of the symbols of a past you can still feel in the atmosphere of the place. The houses, huddled close to each other, create charming and shady corners. The owers on the windows, a cat prowling around, the lush gardens, the scent of plants, the singing of the birds… everything speaks of a peaceful way of life, marked by a calm and enjoyable rhythm. The views from the village are breathtaking: the eye embraces the entire lake surrounded by mountains, and reaches far up the chain of Monte Rosa with his snow-capped peaks.

CARONA

Wonderfully located at 602 meters above sea level, between the peak of Mount San Salvatore and Mount Arbostora, Carona is a very picturesque ancient hamlet cherished by many architects, sculptors, stucco artists and stonecutters whose works can still be seen in several churches and mansions. The centre of the village is characterized by its narrow streets, wonderful little squares and skilfully decorated and painted old houses.

Gandria, an unspoiled and picturesque shermen’s village clinging to the Brè mountainside, offers breathtaking views of the Lugano lake. Closed to traf c, the village is a heaven of peace with its narrow streets and stairways. Gandria can be reached by car (there is a parking area at the entrance of the village), by boat, by bus or on foot with a half hour walk along the lakeside trail from Castagnola-San Domenico.
