EDITORIALE EDITORIAL
La propria città si impara ad amarla fin dall’infanzia, poiché è qui che coltiviamo legami e sentimenti che ci accompagnano per tutta la vita. Lo spirito di una città è dato dalle esperienze condivise dai suoi abitanti; per questo il Comune di Lugano propone un calendario ricco di iniziative dove bambini, giovani e adulti trovano occasioni di incontro e di crescita personale. Ringrazio tutti coloro che contribuiscono ad arricchire l’offerta turistica e culturale anche nei mesi primaverili.

You learn to love your hometown from your childhood, because it is the place where you create bonds and feelings that stay with you all your life. The spirit of a city comes from the experiences it shares with its residents and this is why the Lugano City Council is offering a full calendar of events, where children, young people and adults will have the chance meet and to grow personally. 25 edizioni fa la Città organizzava per la prima volta Palco ai Giovani. 25 come gli anni che compie la Divisione Eventi e Congressi – allora Ufficio attività giovanili – di cui Palco ai Giovani fu una delle prime creazioni. Un connubio emblematico, perché se Lugano con i propri eventi si rivolge oggi al pubblico tutto, è attraverso i giovani che si costruisce l’anima di una città, le sue aspirazioni e i suoi obiettivi. Giovani che con il loro entusiasmo e talento, sono l’immagine di una Città viva e che guarda al futuro con grande ottimismo. –
25 editions ago the City organised Palco ai Giovani for the very first time. 25 - the same age as the Events and Conventions Division –then known as the Youth Activities Office – in which Palco ai Giovani was one of its first creations. A symbolic union, because even if the events organised in Lugano are targeted at everyone, it is through young people that the soul of a city is built, as well as its aspirations and its goals. Because young people, with their enthusiasm and talent, are the image of a City that is alive and kicking and that looks to the future with great optimism.

25 ANNI DIVISIONE EVENTI E CONGRESSI
25 YEARS EVENTS AND CONVENTIONS DIVISION
Nel 1993 era l’Ufficio attività giovanili, poi Dicastero Giovani ed Eventi, successivamente Area Turismo ed Eventi, per arrivare all’attuale Divisione Eventi e Congressi. Un’evoluzione non solo nella nomenclatura, quella compiuta degli eventi della Città di Lugano in 25 anni di attività, ma strutturale e nel contenuto, nella forma, nel respiro. Un’evoluzione specchio di una Città viva, permeabile, in continuo movimento. 25 anni in cui al coinvolgimento diretto di migliaia di giovani si è accompagnata la realizzazione di innumerevoli collaborazioni ed eventi con artisti provenienti da tutto il mondo. E se il mondo inizia da casa nostra, è proprio partendo dalla realtà locale che la Divisione lancia il proprio sguardo, con l’intento costante di non accartocciarsi su se stessi ma di valorizzare la forza creativa presente sul territorio mettendola in relazione con le spinte esterne. Confrontarsi con i moti artistici internazionali quindi dialogando con la nostra regione, affinché la nostra realtà abbia uno slancio sempre maggiore per protrarsi verso l’esterno. L’auspicio e l’obiettivo è quello, nei prossimi 25 anni, di dar seguito a questi principi e contribuire ancora maggiormente con tutta la Città a una coesione interna, sfruttando al meglio il potenziale presente per ambire ad avere sempre maggior riconoscibilità e riconoscimento oltre i nostri confini. –
In 1993 it was called the Youth Activities Office, then the Youth and Events Department, subsequently the Tourism and Events Area, and is now known as the Events and Conventions Division. Not only its name has evolved, along with the events that have taken place over the last 25 years in the City of Lugano, but also its structure and content, its form and scope. This evolution reflects a city that is alive and kicking, accessible and constantly on-the-move: 25 years in which numerous collaborations and events with artists from all over the world have directly involved thousands of young people. And if our world begins at home, the Division casts its vision by starting with the local situation, constantly striving to not look inwards alone, but rather to exploit the creative forces in our region and to connect them with external influences. This means sharing perspectives with well-known international artists and therefore engaging in dialogue with our region, giving us a greater motivation to continue to look outwards. The hope and the goal is that, in the next 25 years, these principles can be implemented and that an even bigger contribution can be made to internal cohesion together with the entire City, making the most of the potential we have so that we can aspire to achieve greater recognition and acknowledgement beyond our borders.

La gara, apprezzata in tutto il mondo, sarà valida per l'ottenimento dei limiti per i Campionati d'Europa di atletica che si svolgeranno a Berlino ad agosto e per i Campionati del mondo di atletica di Doha del 2019.
The Lugano lakefront will once again host top-level racewalkers with the first important race of the European season. The race, which is highly respected all over the world, will count as a qualifier for the European Championships that will be held in Berlin in August and for the world athletic championships in Doha in 2019.

Special Olympics Run
Special Olympics compie 50 anni e tutta la Svizzera si unisce ai festeggiamenti creando una serie di eventi sportivi tra marzo 2018 e maggio 2018. Per l’occasione a Lugano si terrà una corsa podistica aperta a tutti (Charity Running), che prevede più lunghezze (da 15 a 45 minuti) al fine di permettere a tutti di poter partecipare a seconda delle proprie capacità sportive. L’evento è organizzato in collaborazione con il Lugano Trophy.
Special Olympics will be celebrating its 50th anniversary and all of Switzerland will be joining in the celebrations, creating a series of sporting events between March 2018 and May 2018. For the occasion, Lugano will host running races of various lengths (from 15 to 45 minutes) open to all (Charity Running), so that everyone can take part according to their sporting abilities. The event is organised in collaboration with the Lugano Trophy.

Festa 170 anni SNL
La Società Navigazione del Lago di Lugano festeggia 170 anni di navigazione (dal 1848), con un evento di grande richiamo aperto a tutti. Si terrà come da tradizione la festa d’apertura con tutta la flotta a disposizione del pubblico e delle famiglie e la festa popolare ticinese con concerti, varie attività e intrattenimento per grandi e bambini.
The Società Navigazione del Lago di Lugano is celebrating 170 years of navigation (since 1848), with a popular event open to all. In keeping with tradition, there will be an opening party with the entire fleet available to the public and families, as well as the Ticino folk festival with concerts, various activities and entertainment for both adults and children.

Spartacus Run
L’edizione 2018 va alla conquista di tutta la Svizzera e per la prima volta sbarca anche a CanobbioLugano. La competizione prevede una distanza di 3.7 km, un dislivello di 120 m per giro e il superamento di una serie di ostacoli, da pozze di fango a pareti di legno. La gara si può affrontare individualmente o a squadre ed è aperta anche a bambini e adolescenti (con percorsi separati).
The 2018 edition is setting out to conquer all of Switzerland and for the first time will be held in Canobbio-Lugano. The race will be 3.7km long, with a difference in altitude of 120m per round and a number of obstacles to overcome, ranging from mud pits to wall climbs. You can participate individually in the race or in teams and it is also open to children and youths (with separate routes).

Pasqua in Città trasformerà il centro di Lugano in un allegro palcoscenico con le piazze principali pronte ad accogliere animazioni per tutti, creando un’atmosfera unica che cittadini e turisti non potranno perdersi. I protagonisti dell’offerta culturale saranno l’Orchestra Mozart e Pablo Picasso. L’Orchestra, una delle più significative realtà sinfoniche europee del nuovo millennio, presenterà due concerti sinfonici sotto la direzione prestigiosa del maestro Bernard Haitink e due cameristici. All’artista spagnolo sarà reso omaggio con la mostra “Picasso. Uno sguardo differente”. Diverse attività accompagneranno i due principali appuntamenti.

The Orchestra Mozart and Pablo Picasso will lead the cultural offer. The ensemble, one of the most important European symphonic orchestra of the new millennium, will perform in two prestigious symphonic concerts conducted by Bernard Haitink and two chamber music evenings. The great Spanish master will be the protagonist of a monographic exhibition “Picasso. A Different Gaze”. Various activities will accompany this two main events.

Street Food Festival Lugano

Galleries, art spaces, and museums of the city of Lugano open at the same time and free of charge! Some of the venues participating in this initiative offer special events such as vernissages with the artists present, readings, musical performances, and aperitifs. A special day in the discovery of the places in the city where art plays a leading role.

Flora & Bosco in Piazza
Un colorato weekend che profuma d’estate… A seguito del successo di FloraLugano la Città di Lugano ospiterà per la prima volta “Flora & Bosco in Piazza”. L’esposizione, che durerà tre giorni, decorerà il centro cittadino con colori, profumi e intrattenimenti per attirare l’attenzione e coinvolgere non solo gli appassionati di giardinaggio ma chiunque si trovi a passeggiare nel cuore di Lugano.
A colourful weekend with the scent of summer… Following the success of FloraLugano, the City of Lugano will host “Flora & Bosco in Piazza” for the first time. The fair, lasting three days, will decorate the city centre with colours, scents and entertainment to attract the attention and involve not only keen gardeners, but anyone that is walking in the heart of Lugano.

Il Giardino dei Giusti di Lugano
Inaugurazione
La Fondazione Spitzer e la Città di Lugano promuovono la creazione di un Giardino dei Giusti al Parco Ciani, una novità per la Svizzera. Degli alberi appositamente piantati e delle targhe renderanno omaggio a quattro figure di Ticinesi particolarmente rappresentative della tradizione umanitaria della Città e del Cantone: Francesco Alberti, Carlo Sommaruga, Anna Maria Valagussa e Guido Rivoir.
Inauguration
The Spitzer Foundation and the City of Lugano are promoting the creation of a Garden of the Righteous in the Parco Ciani, which is new for Switzerland. Specially planted trees and plaques will pay homage to four figures from Ticino that are particularly representative of the humanitarian tradition of the City and the Canton: Francesco Alberti, Carlo Sommaruga, Anna Maria Valagussa and Guido Rivoir.

Evento dedicato alla città lagunare per eccellenza, con la partecipazione di circa un centinaio di maschere veneziane con magnifici costumi artigianali. Partenza del corteo dall’Ex Asilo Ciani, a seguire minuetti, quadriglie e valzer su tutte le piazze del centro. Il corteo si concluderà al Parco Ciani, dove si svolgeranno i servizi fotografici.
An event dedicated to the lake city par excellence, with the participation of around one hundred Venetian masks with magnificent handmade costumes.
Departure from the courtyard of the Ex Asilo Ciani, followed by minuets, quadrilles and waltzes in all the city squares. The procession will end with a photoshoot in the Parco Ciani.

La tredicesima edizione della Festa danzante torna a far brulicare le città e i comuni che aderiscono al progetto con la sua folle energia! Per un intero fine settimana si danza in ogni dove dall’hip hop al tango, dalla danza contemporanea ai balli folclorici. Tutti potranno scoprire il talento di noti coreografi o di giovani artisti, cimentarsi in passi di ballo, partecipare a divertenti party, farsi sorprendere da flash mob e molto altro!
The thirteenth edition of the Festa danzante is returning to flood the city and villages participating in the project with its amazing energy! For an entire weekend there will be dancing everywhere, from hip hop to the tango, from contemporary dance to folk dance. Everyone can witness the talent of well-known choreographers or young artists, try their hand at different dance steps, participate in fun parties, let themselves be surprised by flash mobs and much more!

La Bacchica
Per la quinta volta la Bacchica propone un evento legato alla cultura e al territorio cantonale e nazionale. Le giornate saranno allietate dalle note delle bandelle e le serate da quelle di gruppi musicali. Non mancherà la degustazione di vini, il mercato di prodotti enogastronomici e uno dei punti forti della manifestazione: il grande corteo folcloristico che si snoderà sul lungolago nel pomeriggio di domenica.
For the fifth time the Bacchica is offering an event with strong ties to Ticinese and Swiss culture. The days and evenings will be filled with the cheerful music of the various bands and groups. There will also be wine-tasting, a food and wine market and one of the event’s highlights: the great folklore parade that will wind its way along the lakefront on the Sunday afternoon.

An event that continues to adapt itself to the sporting needs of running enthusiasts. Pride 2018 Lugano
Il primo pride mai organizzato nella Svizzera italiana. La manifestazione, di portata nazionale, comprenderà senz’altro la tradizionale parata, ma in programma c’è molto di più. Dal 28 maggio al 3 giugno si succederanno infatti eventi culturali, incontri, aperitivi e un grande party. L’obiettivo: coinvolgere la comunità locale in un confronto sereno sui temi LGBT in un’atmosfera di festa. Per tutti.
The first Pride ever organised in the Italian part of Switzerland. This national event will of course include the traditional parade, but the programme offers much more. In fact, from 28 May until 3 June there will be cultural events, gatherings, aperitifs and a big party. The goal: to involve the local community in a peaceful discussion on LGBT topics in a party atmosphere. Open to everyone.

Over the course of three evenings, the groups that won the final during the winter session of the competition will take to the stage. During the event the audience and jury will declare the winner of the 25th edition of Palco ai Giovani.

Vincitori dell’edizione di Palco ai Giovani 2017, i Bumblebees ci raccontano la loro esperienza e i prossimi progetti.
L’anno scorso vi siete aggiudicati il primo premio a Palco ai Giovani. Com’è stata per voi questa esperienza?
Partecipare e vincere Palco ai Giovani 2017 è stata per noi un’esperienza davvero indimenticabile. Suonare davanti a così tanta gente e vedere la città così piena e gioiosa è stato qualcosa di veramente bello ed emozionante. Vincere il concorso inoltre ci ha aiutato senza dubbio a crescere come band, portandoci molto sia a livello personale che come gruppo.
Vi siete già esibiti oltre Gottardo in contesti importanti, come il format 8x15 della SSR. Vi sentite un po’ rappresentati del contesto musicale ticinese?
Suonare al format 8x15 a Coira è stata un’altra esperienza davvero molto bella, poiché per la prima volta eravamo a stretto contatto con diverse realtà musicali provenienti da diverse parti della Svizzera, e abbiamo avuto modo di vedere come la musica in Svizzera è davvero molto variegata! In tal occasione, oltre a noi, era presente pure Nic Gyalson come band ticinese. Abbiamo sicuramente rappresentato il Ticino, ma come una delle tante realtà musicali che esistono nel nostro cantone. Rappresentare il contesto musicale ticinese, fatto da diversi artisti e generi diversi, è difficile per una sola band.
Avete appena pubblicato il video di “Time Machine”. Quali sono i vostri prossimi progetti? Dopo il nostro primo EP “Pollination” e il videoclip di “Time Machine” il nostro scopo e farci conoscere ancora di più in tutta la Svizzera, promuovendo la nostra musica in diverse location durante la prossima primavera ed estate. In parallelo a ciò ci sarà anche la composizione di nuovo materiale e, nel lungo termine ma non troppo, la preparazione di un album vero e proprio.
Winners of the Palco ai Giovani 2017 edition, the Bumblebees tell us about their experience and their upcoming plans.
Last year you won first prize at Battle of the Bands. How would you rate this experience?
Taking part and winning Palco ai Giovani 2017 was a truly unforgettable experience for us. Playing in front of some many people and seeing the city so full and happy was really great and exciting. Without doubt winning the competition also helped us to grow as a band, offering us lots both personally and as a group.
You have already performed in big competitions in the north of Switzerland, like in SSR’s 8x15. Do you feel a little that you are representative of the Ticino music scene?
Playing at 8x15 in Chur was another wonderful experience, since we were in close contact with different bands from all over Switzerland for the first time, and we were able to witness first-hand just how varied music in Switzerland really is! Nic Gyalson was also playing on this occasion, in addition to us, another band from Ticino. We certainly represented Ticino, but as one of the many music bands that there are in our canton. It is difficult for a single band to represent the Ticino music scene, which is made up of so many different artists and genres.
You just published the video “Time Machine”. What plans do you have next?
After our first EP “Pollination” and the video clip “Time machine” our goal is to become better known throughout Switzerland, by promoting our music in different locations next spring and summer. In parallel to this we will also be writing new material and, in the long-term but not too far ahead, preparing a true and proper album.

Quali sono le differenze fra la composizione per l’immagine e quella per il puro ascolto musicale?
Dialogano fra loro o sono due mondi distinti?
Sono connessi a livello estetico, soprattutto considerando che non sono un compositore “universale”, cosa che non mi rende il più duttile dei compositori di film. Nel cinema bisogna essere complementari alla narrazione e questo vincola necessariamente la musica. Avere dei vincoli può però anche essere positivo e i riferimenti visivi mi aiutano a superare alcune abitudini nella composizione.
Che importanza ha il confronto diretto con il pubblico nei live?
È molto importante. Se lo studio è un luogo fantastico in cui sviluppare idee, suonare dal vivo è fondamentale per capire veramente la musica. Inoltre, in un mondo sempre più disconnesso, esibirsi live è un grande divertimento!

Quale spazio ha avuto l’improvvisazione nel suo nuovo album “By the Deep Sea”?
I brani nascono quasi sempre da sessioni di improvvisazione. A volte basta un’immagine, un’idea o un pensiero e la musica in qualche modo arriva da sola. Spesso il piano è lui stesso a guidarti e aiutarti a esprimere certe emozioni.
Quale influenza ha avuto il contesto extra musicale nel suo percorso?
Essenziale. Il mio approccio è quasi unicamente extra-musicale. Un quadro, un film, o semplicemente l’idea di qualcosa, qualcuno, un’esperienza vissuta, un problema da risolvere, un momento di fragilità. È un modo di esorcizzare l’esperienza stessa e trasformarla in qualcos’altro.
Come convivono l’intimità delle sue composizioni e la performance live?
Cerco di mantenere l’intimità anche nella performance e creare una comunicazione reale con il pubblico. Una sorta di alchimia fatta di emozioni e non di parole.

What is the difference between your approach on composing music for film or for your albums? Are these dimensions connected?
They are connected aesthetically, mostly because I’m not really an “all-round” composer, which admittedly doesn’t make me the most flexible film composer. With film, one needs to respond to the narrative of the film, which imposes some constraints on the music. However all art needs constraints, and having visuals to respond to can help escape some of my compositional habits.
What does the live performance mean to you?
It’s very important. Whilst the studio is a great place to develop ideas and search for “perfection”, playing live is necessary to really understand the music. In an increasingly disconnected world, playing live is also a great deal of fun!

What role did improvisation play in putting together your new album, “By the Deep Sea”?
The songs are almost always the result of improvisation sessions. At times an image, an idea or a thought is enough and the music somehow comes by itself. The piano is what often guides you and helps you to express certain deep emotions.
What influence has the extra-musical world had on your journey?
Essential. My approach is almost exclusively extra-musical. A painting, a film, or even simply the idea of something, an experience had, a problem to solve, a moment of fragility - all these are a way of dispelling the experience itself and transforming it into something else.
How do the intimacy of your compositions and live performances co-exist?
I try to maintain intimacy also in my performances. My goal is to create real communication with the audience, a kind of alchemy made up of emotions instead of words.

Come è nata la sua passione per il teatro?
Desideravo tanto fare il doppiatore di cartoni animati senza sapere cosa significasse recitare. Questa mancanza si rivelò la mia fortuna: mi iscrissi a una scuola di teatro e del teatro mi innamorai, tanto da vincere una borsa di studio per la mia formazione.
Come nasce uno spettacolo?
Le mie sono scelte istintive, amando i testi classici del teatro vengono spesso suggerite dai libri che leggo. Rileggendo Ionesco mi sono innamorato di “Delirio a due” e l’ho proposto agli attori. Succede quasi sempre così, spolvero un libro, lo rileggo in quinta con gli attori e poi invitiamo quelle pagine a calcare la scena per vedere come si muovono e come ci muovono.
“Delirio a due” racconta l’assurdità dei conflitti in tutte le possibili declinazioni. Dal conflitto con se stessi, ai conflitti di coppia fino alle vere e proprie guerre. Il tutto si svolge nell’apparente intimità di una camera da letto. In questa commedia lo stile inconfondibile di Ionesco esplode in una serie di dialoghi deliranti tra i protagonisti, un uomo e una donna. I testi teatrali restano magnifica letteratura finché non vengono disseppelliti dalla polvere, trascinati dalle quinte alla scena, dove a sipario aperto respirano una nuova vita, vengono riletti da corpi in prestito. Noi siamo quel corpo, quella nuova vita, il teatro.
Quale ruolo dovrebbe avere il teatro oggi?
Preferisco interrogarmi su che tipo di teatro desidero vedere. Personalmente sento il bisogno di tornare ai testi classici. Mi piace che mi si raccontino delle storie belle e lo stesso voglio fare con le mie regie. Amo il teatro che non provoca per il gusto di provocare, avido di consensi o dissensi. Credo che presto i classici torneranno di moda e che saranno la fonte della vera innovazione delle arti.

How was your passion for theatre born?
I really wanted to be a voice over actor for cartoons without knowing what it meant to act. This lack of shortcoming proved to be my fortune: I enrolled in a theatre school and I fell in love with theatre, so much as that I won a study grant for my education.
How is a show created?
My choices are instinctive, and loving classic theatre scripts, the choices I make are often suggested by the books that I read. By reading Ionesco I fell in love with “Frenzy for two, or more” and I proposed it to the actors. It almost always happens that way, I dust off a book, I re-read it in the wings of the stage with the actors and then we send those pages to the stage to see how they move and how we move. “Frenzy for two, or more” tells the story of the absurdity of conflicts in all their possible forms. From conflict with the self to conflicts in a couple up to true and proper wars. The whole play takes place in the apparent intimacy of a bedroom. In this comedy Ionesco’s unmistakable style explodes in a serious of frenzied dialogues between the actors, a man and a woman. Theatre scripts remain magnificent literature until they are resurrected from the dust, dragged from the wings to the stage, where new life is breathed into them as soon as the curtains open, re-interpreted by bodies on loan. We are that body, that new life, the theatre.
What role should theatre play today?
I prefer to ask myself what type of theatre I want to see. Personally I feel the need to return to classic scripts. I like that they tell beautiful stories and I want to do the same with my work. I love theatre that does not provoke for the sake of provoking, thirsty for approval or disapproval. I believe that the classics will soon come back into fashion and will be the source of the true innovation of the arts.

Una visita in realtà aumentata
Dopo il successo dello scorso anno, sarà nuovamente possibile visitare le sale del pianterreno di Villa Ciani con gli occhiali 3D. Il tour in realtà aumentata Tutta un’altra villa racconta la storia dell’edificio e dei suoi proprietari, Ciani e Gabrini, e permette ai visitatori di immergersi nell’atmosfera della Lugano ottocentesca in modo innovativo e divertente.
La visita, della durata di 30 minuti, è adatta ai ragazzi dagli 8 anni ed è disponibile in italiano, francese, tedesco e inglese.

Tutta un’altra villa tells the story of the building and its owners, Ciani and Gabrini, and allows visitors to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the Lugano of the nineteenth century in an innovative and fun way. The tour, which lasts 30 minutes, is suitable for children aged 8 and older and is available in Italian, French, German and English.

Un museo a cielo aperto sul lungolago
Il progetto di riqualifica dell’area Belvedere, sulla scia dei recenti cambiamenti urbanistici della zona, permette di immergersi in un nuovo percorso artistico dedicato ad opere scultoree realizzate nella seconda metà del Novecento.
La volontà della Città di Lugano - in collaborazione con gli scultori e con l’architetto Paolo Fumagalli - è quella di mettere in risalto le opere, integrandole con il paesaggio naturale circostante e al tempo stesso rispondere al desiderio degli artisti di mantenere le sculture in una delle zone più pregevoli del lungolago.

The redevelopment of the Belvedere area, following recent city-planning changes, allows visitors to lose themselves along a new artistic pathway dedicated to sculptures created in the second half of the twentieth century.
The City of Lugano – in collaboration with the sculptors and the architect Paolo Fumagalli – aims to draw attention to the works, by integrating them with the surrounding natural landscape, and at the same time responds to the wish of the artists to keep the sculptures in one of the most prestigious areas of the lakefront.

Spostarsi in Città diventa più semplice, divertente e ecologico se si noleggia una bicicletta. A disposizione della popolazione e dell’utenza di Lugano, Paradiso, Tesserete, Melide e Morcote, ci sono 12 stazioni e più di un centinaio di biciclette. Il BikeSharing è un sistema di noleggio di biciclette gestito da stazioni automatiche che funziona con una carta clienti. Si può prendere una bicicletta in una stazione e restituirla in un’altra, una volta arrivati a destinazione.
Renting a bike makes getting about the city becomes easier, more fun, and more environmentally friendly. There are 12 stations and more than a hundred bicycles available for inhabitants and users in Lugano, Paradiso, Tesserete, Melide, and Morcote. Bike sharing is a bike rental system managed by automatic stations that works with a customer card. You can take a bike from one station and return it to another once you get to your destination.
