welcome

Seaford Head Golf Club, one of the friendliest clubs in Sussex, is within easy access of central Brighton and Lewes yet offers peace and tranquillity with mesmerising views of the South Downs, Cuckmere Valley and the famous Seven Sisters Cliffs.

One of the first towns in England to establish a golf club, Seaford’s 18-hole, par 71 course measures 5,848 yards from the white tees and has an excellent reputation for both its year-round condition and its design. The club has been progressive ever since its inception, with developments continually being made to the course and the club complex to expand and improve facilities for both members and visitors.

We provide everything that a golfer would expect at a well-established club. The Pro Shop stocks a full range of equipment and clothing while expert tuition and extensive practice areas offer the opportunity to work on your game and lower your handicap. Our modern clubhouse has exceptional facilities including the bar, restaurant and main function room where social and business functions take place throughout the year. We work hard at ensuring we provide everyone with a fantastic service so come and see what makes us special.

www.seafordheadgolfcourse.co.uk

Designed and constructed in 1887, Seaford Head Golf Club is one of the most spectacular golf courses in the country and is steeped in recent and ancient history.

5

History www.seafordheadgolfcourse.co.uk

6

Golf in the seaside city of Brighton dates back as far as 1826, when reports of golf being played at Brighton were the first mention of the sport in Sussex. Seaford Head Golf Club, however, was not founded until the summer of 1887, following its inaugural meeting between a small number of local residents on 6th August. There was obviously much work to do; land to be obtained and members to be recruited and all this was done prior to the first general meeting which was held just a few weeks later on 8th September, 1887.Seaford was one of the first towns in England to establish a golf club and one of the first two in Sussex, along with Eastbourne.

The first course was made up of 150 acres of land, adjacent to Seaford Head, which were leased from Mr Launcelot Harison of Sutton Place, Seaford (now Newlands School); the rent was £70 per year. A golf course of twelve holes was established, however, the land was still grazed by sheep due toRuben Russell’sshepherd’s cottageoccupying the centre of the course. The twelve holes were laid out by a Mr Thompson of Felixstowe. Coincidentally like Seaford Head, the Felixstowe golf course also overlooks a Martello Tower. The course was one and a quarter miles in distance and if eighteen holes were required the first five holes were replayed with an extra hole adjacent to the Shepherd’s Cottage.

It was reconstructed in 1946 and is now the responsibility of Seaford Town Council, who manage the course from their offices in Seaford.

A Pioneering Club

www.seafordheadgolfcourse.co.uk

It was extended to an 18-hole course in 1889 and in May 1928the course and clubhouse were taken over by Seaford Urban District Council. In 1940 the course was requisitioned by the military for the duration of the war and ploughed up for food production, some of this being evident today on the 4th, 15th and 18th holes.

The Seven Sisters can be seen from our 13th, 14th and 15th holes and the famous 18th hole has an extended vista over Seaford bay and beyond to Brighton. The 18th is also the course’s signature hole and one you will never tire of teeing off from; some 300 feet above sea level, watch your drive soar down 150 feet to the fairway below before approaching the green that sits next to our new clubhouse.

The course’s toughest hole, however, is the 366-yard, par four 11th. After teeing off you are faced with an uphill shot to a blind, left to right sloping green. A number of undulating greens and fairways make the course a true challenge, however, with strong winds and severe slopes on certain holes, your imagination is key to a good round here. We think you’ll agree with us that this has to be one of the best-kept secrets in East Sussex, and one thing is for sure - we know you will be back.

www.seafordheadgolfcourse.co.uk

Laid out by Mr Thompson of Felixstowe, our picturesque 18-hole, par 71 course measures 5,848 yards long, offering a fair and true test for golfers of all abilities.

about the course

Located in the shadow of Seaford Head cliffs and with some of the most breath-taking views in Sussex, the course at Seaford Head Golf Club is a lovely blend of undulating downland and links style golf.

course tour

If you have never played at Seaford Head Golf Club before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our hole-by-hole tour.

Hole 3: “The Plateau” White 279 Yellow 270 Red 255

A strong first hole starts with a challenging tee shot up over a ridge. Longer drives need to be aimed to the right hand side of the left sloping. The approach to the elevated green is guarded short left by a big bomb crater and to the right by a greenside bunker. The green slopes quite steeply from right to left and your approach should allow for that. A four is a great score here any time.

Another risk and reward from this tee shot. The fairway slopes from left to right and stray shots to the right will find the gorse if long enough. The approach to the green is narrow and very elevated and although only being played with a very short iron, it’s important to get the ball up onto the putting surface.

Hole 2: “The Dew Pond” White 316 Yellow 310 Red 254

The first of our four par three’s generally plays into the prevailing wind. Club selection is key here. Short and you’ll run back down the approach. Long and you’ll flirt with the ‘out of bounds’ and ‘the pill box’. Once you are on the green, the views are spectacular over Seaford Bay.

This short downhill par four is drivable for the bigger hitters. The target is small and there is danger in the form of a dew pond just short and right of the green. The undulating green makes this approach tricky and anything long is in the gorse. A certain risk or reward hole that you make your choice on the tee.

Hole 4: “The Pill Box” White 176 Yellow 167 Red 153

www.seafordheadgolfcourse.co.uk

Hole 1: “The Ravine” White 400 Yellow 386 Red 366

11

12

Hole 5: “The Valley” White 488 Yellow 479 Red 440

Hole 7: “The Copse” White 339 Yellow 339 Red 308

A tee shot over gorse awaits players on this downhill par five. Not long in length but fraught with danger from the tee and to the right as you approach the green. Play safety for a steady par or attack the green in two for stronger players.

This uphill par four offers a generous fairway, sheltered from the prevailing wind. The approach is a different story, as you play up to the elevated green into the breeze at the top of the hill. This long narrow green falls from left to right with tricky undulations awaiting any missed shot to this green.

Hole 6: “The Well” White 394 Yellow 379 Red 370 “The Well” runs parallel to Chyngton Road to the left, trees and the well to the right. This makes for an intimidating tee shot. This flat hole moves slightly from right to left in a dogleg. Ridges made in World War II are still visible in the undulations of the fairway. The flat green is guarded either side with bunkers. As the stroke index 2 hole, walking off with a par is a great score.

Hole 8: “The Steps” White 343 Yellow 330 Red 274 ‘The Steps’ is named after the approach to the green that tiers up to the putting surface. The downhill tee shot to a wide fairway sets up a short but tricky second to the aforementioned green. Big hitters can take on the green with more reward than risk. One to open the shoulders and give it a good swing.

Hole 11: “The Brow” White 366 Yellow 356 Red 303

One of the toughest tee shots, especially off the back tees into the wind. If the small tight fairway is found, the steep uphill second needs to be struck well to get up onto the lofty green. The putting surface runs from back to front. Be careful with the approach putts down the hill, you could end up down back down the fairway.

Stroke index 1 and rightly so. Plays longer than its yardage as it meanders uphill and doglegs to the right as it goes. The drive to a wide, left to right fairway is guarded on the right by a solitary bunker. As you turn to play your approach, you are faced with a sharp uphill shot to a blind green. The marker post shows you the way but it’s better to wander up and inspect the square green awaiting your approach, which slopes left to right quite steeply.

Hole 10: “The Drop” White 143 Yellow 127 Red 103 Our second short hole is a favourite for ‘nearest the pin’ competitions. The raised tee offers full view of the awaiting green. A sharp slope runs down the right side of the green throwing any ball left as it hits the dance floor. Although short, a three is a good score here any day.

Hole 12: “The Hell Hole” White 110 Yellow 104 Red 101 The shortest par three now awaits. This plays straight uphill, a very sharp climb to a square green cut into the slope. Take enough club as anything short could end up back at your feet. On the green you are again wowed with the panoramic views over the downs, town and coast. Once on the relatively flat green, it makes for a straightforward par.

course tour After you climb to the top, the 13th is aptly called ‘the recovery’. This straight par five has a wide driving area and the longer hitters will try and get close in two. A fairway bunker awaits on the left hand side for them. Keep your ball fairly straight on this hole and you’ll not find too much trouble.

Hole 14: “The 7 Sisters” White 359 Yellow 345 Red 299 ‘The Seven Sisters’ sums up the view that jumps out at you all the way down the left hand side of this hole. This slightly downhill hole is best played with a tee shot to the left of the fairway to open up the green. Anything to the right, the green is guarded by a large greenside bunker making hitting the green very tricky. Sloping from right to left, the green rarely gives you a straight putt.

This part of the course is about the views and they never let you down whatever the weather.

Hole 15: “The Gap” White 397 Yellow 380 Red 355 A brute of a hole that plays into the wind most of the time. A welcoming fairway meets your drive as you leave the Seven Sisters behind you. That’s the easy part, the second and sometimes third needs to be threaded through ‘the gap’ some 100 yards short of the green. This tier can catch some long drives on a calm day but mainly threatens long shots in to the green. The long valley green can leave you with a long putt while being buffered by the breeze.

course tour Hole 18: “The Head” White 489 Yellow 482 Red 440

This tiered green is guarded both sides and short by bunkers. Playing mostly downwind does not make this approach any easier. Select your club carefully here to walk away with a par. This is the highest point on the course and you can see all the views from here.

The famous 18th hole. Views over Seaford Bay extend towards Newhaven and Brighton and during really clear days, the Isle of Wight. Some 300 feet above sea level, your tee shot hang time is impressive who ever you are. Two fairway bunkers tempt your second shot down towards the green. The green sits next to the new clubhouse guarded by a bunker and, after finishing on the large green, you can reminisce over your round with a beverage in the 19th.

Hole 17: “The Cliff Edge” White 289 Yellow 282 Red 261 If the wind is not blowing, try and get as close to the green as possible. Trouble awaits you to the right though and a bunker to the left. Appropriately named ‘the cliff edge’ as the green gets precariously close the cliff. A left to right green makes even the shortest putt difficult in the breeze.

tuition

Whether you’re an accomplished player or simply looking to get into the game, the quickest and easiest way to play better golf and lower your scores is to book a lesson with one of our PGA professionals. Seaford Head is blessed with a strong and talented teaching team.

The teaching team also offer on-course tuition, where technique and the tactical side to the game can be addressed at the same time. Learning the correct thought process can often be an eyeopening and rewarding experience for the novice player and can lead to better scores.

We understand golf is a ‘Game For Life’, so our lessons are tailor-made to suit the individual, aiming towards improving people’s performance and enjoyment of the game. This is achieved through precise swing analysis with our GC2 launch monitor, followed by clear instruction and easyto-follow practice drills, which allows us to install solid foundations and good fundamentals, as well as combining the individual’s own natural flair and style. To book a lesson contact Fraser Morley and his team in the Pro Shop by calling 01323 890139.

www.seafordheadgolfcourse.co.uk

We have several styles of tuition to suit your need from a personal one-to-one lesson to a more relaxed short game group lesson with other players of a similar standard. Our coaching facilities include our putting green, practice nets and our chipping and putting area, along with our GC2 launch monitor, which measures your swing and ball flight through club and ball speed, distance, spin rate, launch angle and more.

custom fitting

There has been a growing realisation in recent times that golfing tuition ought to go hand-in-hand with equipment that allows each player to make the absolute utmost of whatever level of natural talent they possess.

The reality is that a golfer could have a perfectly acceptable technique but still be held back because their clubs are not entirely suitable to their swing. This is where custom fitting comes in, a relatively new phenomenon that allows a set of clubs to be built to marry with each golfer’s individual physique and swing characteristics. Custom fitting is something that we take seriously here at Seaford Head and we pride ourselves in what we do. We offer a full and extensive range of products all

available for custom fitting. With a wide range of custom fitting available from your clubs, grips and even your golf ball, you’ll know that the equipment you have won’t let you down Even the top touring professionals struggle to maintain the same fundamentally sound swing characteristics every time, so it is a lot to ask for the average golfer to do likewise. Customising the clubs to position the golfer in the ideal position for their physical characteristics will train the golfer to address the ball with the correct posture and swing along the ideal swing plane, which all adds up to the correct impact position and better scores.

Clubs merely bought off the shelf will be of a standard specification but unfortunately golfers are not, coming in all shapes and sizes.

The practice area also features a bunker which is available for golfers looking to perfect those roundsaving up-and-downs and sand saves.

For those wishing to work on their short game, there is a newly improved putting green that has been specially prepared to complement the subtle borrows and run of the course greens.

For those who find time is at a premium, there are two warm up nets that afford the opportunity to get loose before beginning a round.

The long game is equally well catered for, with a 100-yard practice area that allows golfers the opportunity to open their shoulders and feel the flight of the ball before stepping onto the course.

While some might argue that golf is never a game that can be totally mastered even by the best players who earn their living from the sport, there is no dispute that anyone can get better with a little time and application and the right practice facilities.

The most prominent is the Seaford Sports Festival Golf Tournament that takes place throughout July. Kicking off the action is the Seven Sisters Challenge Cup, an 18-hole men’s medal event, before the White Horse Challenge Cup the day after, an 18hole men’s foursomes. It continues with a ladies 18-hole greensome stableford the following week, called the Lowles Cup, and this is followed by the Lillywhite Challenge Cup, an 18-hole men’s stableford the day after.

The tournament’s final week begins with the Seaford Challenge Cup, a ladies 18-hole stableford, and concludes with the Dick Fairley Challenge Cup, a mixed foursomes over 18 holes. Entry to any of these competitions includes a buffet lunch, while the winners will be presented with their cups after each event. The month of July also sees our juniors in action as the Junior Open, an 18-hole medal event, rounds out the competition season. Events may vary slightly from year to year, though you will find details of upcoming events on our website, www.seafordheadgolfcourse.co.uk

www.seafordheadgolfcourse.co.uk

One of the ways in which we can do this is by staging a number of club competitions throughout the year aimed at golfers from all walks of life and abilities.
