RINGMER AFC –AT THE HEART OF OUR COMMUNITY
As Chairman of Ringmer AFC, I am immensely proud of the role our club plays within the local community. Whilst football remains at the centre of everything we do, our ambitions extend far beyond results on the pitch. Ringmer AFC is a community club built on inclusion, opportunity, development and a genuine desire to provide football for everyone.
Our vision is closely aligned with the club’s mission statement: to create a sustainable, progressive and welcoming football club that develops players, coaches, volunteers and supporters while maintaining strong links with the community we represent. We strive to provide an environment where people of all ages and abilities can enjoy football, build friendships and develop a lifelong connection with the game. Looking ahead, our aspirations are clear. We want to continue strengthening our player pathway, developing our facilities, expanding participation across all sections of the club and creating a sustainable future that benefits both current and future generations.
Above all, we want Ringmer AFC to remain a club that the community can be proud of—a club that provides opportunities, promotes inclusion and brings people together through a shared love of football.
Ringmer AFC is more than just a football club; it is a community asset, a development pathway and a place where people of all ages can belong.

Ringmer AFC was formed in 2020, following the merger of Ringmer FC and AFC Ringmer and their move to a new 3G pitch behind King’s Academy School.
OUR HISTORY
After Ringmer FC folded in 2018 and sold The Caburn to property developers, plans for the Caburn Community Ground and the club merger took several years to complete. Committee members, management, and players from both clubs worked together to create a new structure built around a clear mission statement: to become a sustainable asset for the wider community through first-class facilities, access, and opportunity for all, while providing high-quality football and developing a pathway for local players. This mission remains central to the club’s identity and is displayed on a plaque outside the clubhouse. Since our first season during the unusual
conditions of COVID-19, Ringmer AFC has continued to grow each year. The club now includes four men’s senior sides, two men’s under-18 teams, a Ladies team, a Ladies Flex side for over-30s, a Ladies under-18 team, men’s Veterans and Masters sides, and two Walking Football teams. Having regularly competed at the top of the Mid Sussex Football League Premier Division, including winning the 2023-24 title, the club was promoted last season and is now competing in the Southern Combination Football League for the first time.
7 pension myths that could impact your retirement
Pensions are among the most important financial commitments you will ever make, yet they can often feel complicated. Unfortunately, lacking a clear understanding and believing in prevalent myths could leave you short of the cash you need when retirement comes around.
At Continuum, we are dedicated to helping you separate fact from fiction. Don’t leave your future to chance, call us today to get a clear, professional view of your pension prospects.
Opposite, we examine the true facts behind the mysteries to help you better prepare for the retirement you deserve. The information contained in this article is based on the opinion of Continuum and does not constitute financial advice or a recommendation to suitable investment or retirement strategy, you should seek independent financial advice before embarking on any course of action. A pension is a long-term investment; the fund value can go down as well as up and this can impact the level of pension benefits available. Pension Income could also be affected by interest rates at the time benefits are taken. Pension savings are at risk of being eroded by inflation. The Financial Conduct Authority does not regulate taxation advice. Accessing pension benefits early is not suitable for everyone. You should seek advice to understand your options at retirement. Accessing pension benefits early may impact on levels of retirement income and your entitlement to certain means tested benefits. The tax treatment of pensions in general and tax implications of pension withdrawals will be based on individual circumstances, tax legislation and regulation, which are subject to change in the future.
"You’ll get a state pension to live on."
While you will likely receive a State Pension, the full amount is currently just £11,973 per year. For most, this is not enough to survive on, let alone enjoy retirement. With the State Pension age rising, relying solely on the state is a risky strategy.
"You’re better off putting your money in a savings account."
Pensions are among the most tax-efficient ways to save. Basic rate taxpayers effectively pay £80 for every £100 invested due to tax relief, while higher rate taxpayers pay just £60. Savings accounts generally cannot match this immediate boost to your wealth.
"Your workplace pension contributions are fixed."
While auto-enrolment sets minimums (typically 5% from you and 3% from your employer), these are just starting points. You can often choose to contribute more, and many employers will match these
"It isn’t worth saving into a pension when you are young."
Starting early harnesses the power of compound interest, where your interest earns its own interest. Even small amounts invested young can potentially grow into a substantial pot, whereas delaying means you must contribute significantly more later to achieve the same result.
"You have to stop working to start taking your pension."
You don't necessarily need to retire completely to access your pension. Modern flexibility often allows you to draw money while reducing your hours or working part-time. (Note: Defined Benefit schemes may have different rules).
"You can’t retire early."
"You can sort everything out when you come to retire."
You cannot access the State Pension early, but personal and workplace pensions are different. Currently, you can access these from age 55 (rising to 57 in April 2028). If your pot is large enough to support you, early retirement may be possible.
This is the most dangerous myth. Your retirement lifestyle depends on the size of the pot you build during your working life. Leaving it until the end limits your options and your potential income.
Founded in 1905, Ringmer FC was at the heart of village life for more than a century.
OUR PREDECESSORS.
Joining the Lewes & District League before the First World War, the club quickly established itself as a source of local pride. Following the conflict, Ringmer returned with renewed determination, capturing its first major honour, the Sussex Junior Cup, in 1926 and laying the foundations for generations of footballing success. The post-war years marked a period of remarkable growth. The club moved to its iconic Anchor Field home and, after joining the Brighton League in 1951, steadily climbed through the ranks to earn a place in the Sussex County League in 1963. Ambition, vision and hard work transformed both the club and its facilities, with significant developments at The
Caburn creating a platform for unprecedented success on the pitch.
The late 1960s and early 1970s stand as one of the greatest eras in Ringmer FC’s history. The club secured the Division Two title in 1968–69 before achieving a feat that would place the village on the national football map. In 1970–71 led by current trustee Pat Francis and featuring a number of families still closely connected to Ringmer AFC, Ringmer FC became the first village club to reach the FA Cup First Round Proper, a landmark achievement that remains a source

of immense pride. Their dream run came to an end on November 21, 1970, when they suffered a brave 3-0 defeat away to League Two side Colchester United. The success continued as the club lifted its only Sussex County League Division One championship in 1971–72 and followed it with Sussex Senior Cup glory the very next season.
Like many historic clubs, Ringmer FC experienced both triumph and adversity in the decades that followed. The club enjoyed a resurgence in the mid-2000s, winning the RUR Cup in 2005–06 and reaching the Sussex Senior Cup Final. Even when faced with its greatest challenge during the 2008–09 season, when administration threatened its very existence, the spirit of the club endured. Although Ringmer FC eventually closed its doors in 2018, its legacy remains under the auspice of the new club Ringmer AFC.

HOW BIG A PENSION POT DO YOU ACTUALLY NEED?
CRAIG PARKINSON Independent Financial Adviser
Planning for the future can be confusing. While you know you need a pension, the "magic number" depends entirely on the lifestyle you want. Are you looking for the simple life, or do you want to see the world in style?
The Cost of Retirement According to trade association Pensions UK, retirement living standards fall into three distinct categories (figures per year):
Basic (£13,400 Single | £21,600 Couple)
• The Lifestyle: Covers essentials. No car, limited evenings out, simple living.
• The Reality: If you own your home, the full new State Pension (approx. £12k per person) might just cover this level of retirement.
Moderate (£31,700 Single | £43,900 Couple)
• The Lifestyle: More flexibility. Includes running a car and one holiday abroad per year.
Comfortable (£43,900 Single | £60,600 Couple)
• The Lifestyle: The finer things. Includes foreign holidays, UK mini-breaks, and updating your car every five years.
Bridging the Gap
Many savers face an unpleasant surprise when they realize their workplace pension alone won't fund a "Comfortable" lifestyle. Moving jobs frequently often results in small, fragmented pots that are hard to track.
Why Consider a Private Pension?
To reach the "Comfortable" tier, you may need to take control with a private pension. Starting young offers three distinct advantages:
1. Tax Relief: A basic rate taxpayer turns £80 into £100 instantly through tax relief. It is effectively "free money" from the government to boost your savings.
2. Compound Growth: A pension is a long-term investment. Starting early gives your money more time to potentially grow, meaning your pot could be worth many times what you originally put in.
3. Control: You decide how much to contribute and where it is invested to target the specific lifestyle you want.
Conclusion
Don't leave your retirement to chance. Review your current prospects today to ensure you are on track for the lifestyle you deserve.

Born from a passion for community and opportunity, AFC Ringmer was founded in 2004 by local lads James Warren and Stephen Craig, determined to give young players a chance to proudly represent their village when other pathways had fallen short.
OUR PREDECESSORS.
AFC RINGMER:
What followed was an extraordinary rise through the ranks. In their debut season, the club were crowned Mid Sussex Football League Division 5 champions, setting the tone for years of success. Three more consecutive promotions followed, alongside Somerville Cup glory, as AFC Ringmer established a reputation for ambition, resilience and excellence. Under the guidance of managers Dan Merry, Sam Short and later Oli Gibson, the club continued its remarkable journey, reaching the Mid Sussex Football League Premier Division by 2015–16.
The legacy of AFC Ringmer extends far beyond trophies and promotions, accommodating three senior teams by the time the club rebranded into Ringmer AFC. Many of the individuals who helped shape ‘AFC’ have played vital roles in the success of Ringmer AFC and remain as a part of the coaching and committee infrastructure.
The lasting legacy of AFC Ringmer lives on not only in its achievements on the pitch, but in the deep and enduring impact it has made on the village it was created to serve.
Ringmer AFC Men’s 1st Team are the club’s men’s senior side whom for the 2026/27 are managed by Ringmer resident Dan Barnett, and supported by Head Coach Oli Gibson and Assistant Manager Nick Leftley, both of whom also live in the village and coach at partner club Ringmer Rovers JFC.
1ST TEAM
Affiliated to the Sussex County FA, the team competes in the Southern Combination Football League Division One and have built a reputation for platforming strong local talent,
and implementing a hardworking, technical and attacking style of football. Backed by a comprehensive club structure, the 1st team aims to combine competitive football with player development and a clear pathway for local talent.
PATHWAY FOR YOUNG PLAYERS
One of our greatest strengths is the player pathway we have established in partnership with Ringmer Rovers Junior Football Club.
This relationship allows young players to begin their footballing journey locally before progressing through the age groups and into our Under-18 teams. From there, talented and committed players have the opportunity to continue their development within our senior sides, creating a clear route from grassroots football to adult football without leaving their local community.
This pathway not only strengthens our teams but also helps maintain the identity of Ringmer AFC. Many of our players have grown up together, represented local youth teams and now proudly wear the club’s colours at senior level. We are committed to continuing this development model and ensuring that opportunities exist for local players to fulfil their potential.
The Ringmer AFC women’s team was formed in August 2020 by Holly Smith and first played friendlies before entering league football in 2021-22.
THE WOMEN’S
Since then, the team has competed regularly in Sussex County Women & Girls Football League. For the 2026/27 season the club will further strengthen it’s place in local football with the inclusion of a women’s under 23 team who will also compete in the open age structure of the Sussex County Women & Girls Football
League having won a league and cup double in the under 18’s Premier Division.
Alongside the two competitive teams, the Women’s section of the club has a strong emphasis on participation for local women and girls with a “Wildcats” team designed specifically for girls ages 5–11 to build confidence, stay active, and make friends, a “Flex” team for those who wish to stay active by playing football, and “Walking football” for over 40’s.
We have been delighted by the overwhelmingly positive feedback received throughout our home fixtures this season, with supporters consistently praising the atmosphere, facilities and sense of community that make Ringmer AFC so special.
This enthusiasm has also led to a growing number of enquiries from fans interested in becoming club members. Joining Ringmer AFC is a simple process and opens the door to a range of exclusive benefits, while also helping to support the continued growth and success of the club. Whether you are a lifelong resident of the village or a supporter from further afield,
