History F

ounded in 1893 Northampton Golf Club celebrated its centenary three years after moving to its present site in the old grounds of the Althorp Estate, home to the Spencer Family and the late Princess Diana.

The old course, affectionately known as “Kettering Road” after a nearby main road or “The Hills & Hollows”, was originally 9 holes built in 1895 by the legendary Old Tom Morris and was the club’s second home after two years playing in fields across town near Cliftonville. Two more Open Champions designed changes to the layout, Willie Park Jr and James Braid.

Opened in 1990 the present 18 hole course was laid out to a design by Donald Steele and has undergone only subtle changes over the last 20+ years to further enhance its stunning estate land setting. Northampton golf club and its course have now matured into one of the best regarded facilities and tests of golf in the Northants County. Big skies and open space await members and visitors alike.

The Course T

he ‘Harlestone’ layout is a championship 18 holes of 6,515 yards off the back tees and is a pleasant but stern test for golfers of all abilities.

The first four holes present a difficult start through mature woodland with a par 4, par 3, par 5 and par 4 sequence. The 2nd hole is one of two signature par 3’s requiring a medium to long iron over a small lake to a two tier green.

The middle section rolls through slightly more open estate land where the player can ‘open their shoulders’ a little. The par 5 12th hole is almost 600 yards and is a challenge for all players to make in three shots. It may sound incredible but a select few have reached the green with a driver and a wedge! The final three holes are over and around the ornamental lake and it takes a strong nerve to finish in par figures. The par 3 16th is another signature hole with all carry to a large but narrow two tier green.

Course Highlights 2nd HOLE “Sunset”

3rd HOLE “Woodway”

4th HOLE “New Park”

A beautiful par 3 which presents the golfer with a tricky tee shot so early in the round. A solid mid to long iron from the back tee, depending on the wind direction, will find the two tier green 166 yards away. It’s all carry over the small ornamental lake but there is plenty of ‘bail out’ room up the right although the funnel of trees either side make it look a very narrow target.

There is no let up with the next hole a 517 yard par 5. The tee shot is from an elevated tee down to a sloping fairway with trouble left and right for errant shots. Long hitters can take on the green after a good tee shot but will have to negotiate both the pond right and a ditch just short of the green. For most a safe lay-up second will leave a short pitch in.

This stoke 2 hole keeps the pressure on the player for a solid start to the round with a demanding tee shot which favours a draw to clear the trees left and two large fairway bunkers on the right side of the dogleg. Even if you execute the tee shot perfectly you are still faced with an awkward approach to a right to left sloping green guarded by two front bunkers. Having done all that two putting is no certainty so concentration is key to walking off with a par.

Course Highlights 12th HOLE “Lighthouse”

15th HOLE “Boathouse”

16th HOLE “Waters Leap”

After a slightly easier ride from the 5th to the 11th with more open/forgiving fairways comes this stroke 1 hole the longest on the course at just under 600 yards. Named after Northampton’s famous Express Lifts test tower, which can be seen in the distance from the tee, this hole again demands precision on all three shots to reach the green and then a steady nerve to two putt the tricky sloping green. A true par 5 this one.

This lovely hole just invites the player to ‘go for it’ from the tee as the wide fairway, approach and green stretch out clean and clear down the hill towards Harlestone Lake beyond. The green sits well below you for the approach so the player must decide either to fly it all the way with a mid/long iron/ rescue club, or try to run it in using the slope whilst avoiding bunkers left and right at the front. A fairly large flattish green awaits so two solid putts should complete the job.

Referred to by many members as the start of our very own ‘Amen Corner’ this picturesque par 3 over the lake focuses the mind on trying to achieve a strong finish to the round. From the white blocks the tee shot is daunting with no real sense of where the wind is coming from despite reference from the last hole. Select the right club, commit to the shot and find the correct tier below the hole and a par is on.

Course Highlights 18th HOLE “Causeway After being able to relax a little on the 17th, where the water is not so uncomfortably close off the tee, comes the final hole where again you need to carry the full width of the lovely Harlestone Lake to find the fairway. The approach is usually just a wedge or short iron to the green but often a severely sloping lie adds a degree of difficulty to getting on in two.You do not usually see the level of the green and out of bounds over the Ha Ha wall fronting the clubhouse makes the shot even more demanding.

With members and visitors usually watching all the action from the balcony with refreshment in hand the player has to concentrate right to the end to hopefully finish with a respectable score in front of the gallery. Scores added up you can finally breathe easy again and take in the full splendour of the surroundings and look forward to the 19th hole.

The well stocked bars offer traditional local ales and popular lagers along with an extensive range of other drinks and beverages. Light lunches and bar snacks are generally available throughout the day with a full menu of meals for those requiring more sustenance.

The clubhouse is built of local Northamptonshire sandstone in keeping with the surrounding villages of Upper and Lower Harlestone and many others around the county. It provides spacious facilities for members and visitors to enjoy post round refreshments as well as more formal society and club match day needs.

A refreshing drink on the balcony watching play over the last four holes is both quite unique and provides for some memorable moments as games putt out on the adjacent eighteenth green.

Wildlife, Flora & Fauna W

hen you come into Northampton Golf Club you are immediately aware of the vast expanse of sky, open vistas and a feel for the stately home pedigree of its rolling fairways and historic woodland features. That legacy is reflected in the rich and diverse nature of the wildlife some examples of which are shown here but there is much, much more to be seen during your round of golf. Birds include Nuthatch, Kestrel, Red Kite and pheasant from nearby Althorp.

The club has an active policy towards promoting and protecting its surroundings with the Course Manager and his staff managing many copses and wooded areas not really in play to provide suitable habitats. When you tee it up at Northampton Golf Club you are never quite sure what to expect from your round, the familiar birdie or two maybe, but most likely encounters of a feathered or fury nature!
