alden Golf Club is located in New Malden in Surrey, 10 miles south west of the heart of London, close to Kingston, Surbiton and Wimbledon, with easy access by road via the A3 and rail from New Malden station.

Our location is perfect for anyone that lives south of the city centre especially in areas such as Putney, Clapham, Raynes Park, Earlsfield and many more.

The golf course was opened in 1926, and though considerable improvements have been carried out since then, the original design and character of the course remain today.

Our picturesque course, set in 120 acres of mature parkland, offers a peaceful golfing haven in the midst of the New Malden suburbs.

Great hospitality is part of the tradition of our Club. We pride ourselves in making everyone feel welcome whether they are visiting the Club for the first time or are longstanding members.

We are a members club, regarded as one of the friendliest in the area, where guests, visitors and societies are all made very welcome.

History

M

alden Golf Club was founded in 1893 as the Raynes Park Golf Club. The original course was required for development so the club moved to its present site in 1926. It was opened by the President of the day Colonel Sir Augustus Fitzgeorge and was followed by an exhibition match between Abe Mitchell, Harry Vardon (6 times Open winner), Alex Herd and Ted Ray, four of the great professionals of the time. Alex Herd had advised on the layout of the course.

The land which now forms the course was originally part of the Coombe Manor Estate which had been acquired from Queen Elizabeth I in 1579.

In 1753 the land was bought by John Spencer who became the 1st Earl Spencer (the same Spencer family as Princess Diana). In 1837, the 3rd Earl Spencer sold the land to Prince Adolphus Frederick, 1st Duke of Cambridge and seventh son of George III. When he died in 1850, his son George, the 2nd Duke of Cambridge, inherited the estate and it was his younger son, Colonel Sir Augustus Fitzgeorge KCVO CB

who became President of the Club until his death in 1933.

One of the distinguished members in the early 1900’s was Wing Commander Frank Brock OBE RNAS. He was a member of the Brock’s Fireworks family which had developed pyrotechnics for use in military raids. One such “raid” was at Zeebrugge in 1918. Wing Commander Brock went as an observer on HMS Vindictive but was killed in an attempt to silence the German guns. To this day the club plays for the Brock Cup each Armistice Sunday in commemoration. www.maldengolfclub.com

Some of the club’s more famous sporting names include Jack Hobbs, the cricketer, Joe Davis, the snooker player, Micky Stewart of Surrey & England cricket all of whom were keen members. Dai Rees, the nine times Ryder Cup player was an assistant professional for a short while as was Peter Coleman who caddied for a long time for Bernhard Langer. Other famous golfers to play the course include Gary Player and Bing Crosby.

George Howard served as professional from 1953 until his retirement in 1990. During his career www.maldengolfclub.com

George Howard had numerous golfing achievements including a top 20 finish in the Open. He went on to Captain Surrey PGA and became its President in 1991. He was succeeded to the role of club professional by Robert Hunter.

Robert also went on to be the Captain of the Surrey PGA and was awarded PGA Professional of the year in 2016 for the Southern Region. Robert Hunter retired in December 2016 after more than 25 years as Head Professional. In Malden tradition, Robert’s Assistant took over from him in January 2017.

About the Course

T

he beautiful parkland course at Malden provides a stern test for golfers of all abilities with a combination of tree lined fairways, carefully positioned bunkers, deceptive greens and natural water hazards.

It was originally laid out in 1926 with the help of Alex Herd, one of the leading professionals of the time. The course now measures 6,295 yards, a yardage that is made all the more difficult by the natural brooks which meander through the course and dictate how certain holes are played.

There are two distinct nines. The first half is played on the “low” part of the course where the brooks either cross or border seven of the nine holes.

Selecting your strategy from the tee is important, particularly if you have to make some allowance for any breeze blowing between the trees.

Quite often you will find you will have to hit a long second shot to the green to give yourself a good chance of getting a par.

The “top” nine is more undulating.

With three par fives, it will encourage you to take out the driver but trees and bunkers will catch any misdirected shots. And with some testing par threes and fours that skirt the edge of the golf course, scoring can still be tricky.

A gentle opener where a drive down the right gives the easiest approach to a long and narrow green. But beware the out of bounds on the right side of the fairway marked along the edge of the stream.

A straight forward par 3 but the pond on the left can collect stray shots.

The green slopes from back to front and is guarded by a bunker on the right and a bank to the left.

A difficult par 4, the tee shot needs to be short of the Beverley Brook unless you have a very long and straight drive, leaving a long second shot to the green. Anyone walking off with a nett par will be very pleased.

A good par 3 hole that is guarded by a wide bunker at the front of a long narrow green. Only a straight shot will find the putting surface otherwise you could end up playing your next shot from one of the bunkers either side of the green

Although a relatively short par 4, the 5th still requires a good drive that misses the bunkers in the centre and to the right of the fairway to ensure a straightforward approach shot into a subtly undulating green.

The hole dog legs to the right, and requires two good shots to find a green that slopes steeply from the middle to the front of the putting surface. But beware the bushes and out of bounds all the way down the right hand side that will catch stray shots from the tee.

Considered by many to be Malden’s signature hole, the 7th has a very narrow fairway bordered by trees on both sides. Find the fairway and there is still the Beverley Brook in front of the green to contend with.

Shorter and straight may be the best way to play the hole.

Another long par 4, the 8th demands an accurate drive short of the brook.

The second shot will be equally demanding with over 200 yards still to go to reach a narrow green with bunkers to the left and right waiting for any stray shots.

A right to left shot off the tee will give the best chance of a par though longer hitters should avoid the left hand bunkers and the line of trees along the fairway. Any tee shot pushed to the right can leave a very long second shot.

The first of the par 5’s and slightly uphill, the hole dog legs to the left.

While there is a wide fairway to aim for, wayward drives will mean that the trees to the right and left can impede the next shot. Approach shots should be kept below the hole on this very undulating green.

A fade from the tee would be ideal, avoiding the bunker to the left of the fairway. But don’t overdo it or the wooded area on the right could swallow up your ball. A long green can leave some difficult putts.

Not a long par 3 but wayward or miss-hit shots can be punished by the stream at the front of the green or the bunkers to the left and right.

A demanding tree-lined par 4 which has two tee options. Playing from the competition tee behind the 12th green requires a long fade between the tall trees to have any chance of reaching a sloping green in two shots. The forward tee offers a tougher fade or short iron from the tee but demands excellent accuracy.

A challenging up-hill par 3, take at least one more club to reach this narrow two tier green protected by bunkers to the right and left of the putting surface

A wide fairway allows the long hitter to reach in two while shorter drives can find the long narrow bunker to the left of the fairway. The pond on the right will catch any stray shots to the green.

I am a Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society and a long standing member of the Malden Camera Club.

With each image, I try to capture the story behind the scene as well as presenting a clear representation of the subject matter. I feel this gives the viewer the most pleasure.

Our Professional Ben Tebbs joined Malden in 1996 and recently took over as Head Professional from Robert Hunter after 35 years loyal service. Ben has been in the golf industry all of his life and developed his knowledge and love of the game from playing Junior golf through to the Professional ranks. He has worked with some of the leading names in golf and most recently hosted a workshop at the club with Ryder Cup guru Nick Bradley.

Our bar snacks are available during the day, seven days a week, and include home-made soups, sandwiches, baguettes and Club specials. And if you want something a little more wholesome, there is also a range of main course meals to choose from. Always look out for the special of the day.

In the restaurant, our catering team, prepare excellent lunches and dinners that can be a single course if you’re in a hurry or working to a limited budget, a full carvery with freshly prepared vegetables or a four course meal.

How to Find Us

alden Golf Club is situated very close to New Malden high street and only a few miles from Kingston Upon Thames and Wimbledon. It is easily accessible from the A3.

Directions Exit the A3 at the New Malden exit and continue toward the high street.

At the end of the high street continue under the railway bridge onto Coombe Lane and eventually Traps Lane. The Clubhouse is situated approximately 800 yards after the high street on the right hand side.

The nearest railway station is New Malden and the club is only a short walk away. New Malden train station is accessible from London Waterloo via the Surbiton, Kingston train lines.
