HISTORY

E

stablished in 1908 on land known as Mollington Hill Farm the club first consulted Willie Park Jnr, twice winner of the Open Championship, but on receiving his quote for laying out the golf course they preferred to engage the now legendary Harry Colt to lay the course out.

The official opening in May 1909 saw an exhibition match between the then Open Champion James Braid and former champion Harry Vardon. Braid returned a 5 under 73 to beat Vardon 2 up recording a drive of over 300 yards on the 16th. On the same day, the amateurs played for the Town Bowl a trophy still played for today.

Ladies have been an integral part of the club since the very start. They held their first general meeting in 1909 and with a starting membership limit of 130 this was quickly increased to 160.

This was at a time when ladies had leisure time but the historical changes in the economic circumstances of many families required ladies to work and there started the demise in female membership at many golf clubs. Leamington however, still maintains a ladies section of over 100 members to compliment the 500 male members.

Golf Course

A

traditional inland parkland golf course that will test all standards of golfer.

An opening par 5 eases the golfer into the round but is quickly followed by a series of challenging par 4’s before finishing the front nine with a reachable par 5 which offers the best opportunity of a birdie on the front.

The back 9 opens with a par 4 playing over the valley before reaching the par 3 11th. Introduced to the layout in 1968 the 11th quickly became the signature hole with its mature pines and well protected green.

The golfer now faces a run of challenging holes where finding the fairway from the tee is critical to making par. The 189 yard par 3 15th is the first of a series of finishing holes, where good distance control will be needed to keep your score going.

The latest addition to the round is the par 3 18th where in still conditions and with the pin on the lower tier it represents a good opportunity to finish with a birdie but into the prevailing left to right wind and the pin on the upper tier where the target is just a few yards wide even bogey is a good return.

Course Tour

The First Hole - 498 yards, par 5 A demanding tee shot to start your round! From the elevated White tee, you drive over a valley to the crest. The Red tee is less elevated. Straying too far left or right will find you in trees and beware there is a pond waiting on the left. If safely on the fairway and over the crest you have full view of the green. At some stage it will be decision time, with the ditch across the full width of the fairway, some 63 yards from the green, you must decide whether to lay-up. If long enough, be aggressive and go for

the green, which is often rewarded with an opening birdie.

The Second Hole - 355 yards par 4 The White tee is elevated, while the Silver and Red tees are at ground level for this hole which is a slight dogleg left. There is trouble on the left in the shape of a copse and if straying further left dense Hawthorne and a likely lost ball. To the right of the fairway your route to green will almost certainly be impeded by trees.

The ground climbs sharply uphill from 150 yards to the green and it is unlikely

you will see the bottom of the flag. One greenside bunker on either side awaits a wayward approach.

The Third Hole - 318 yards, par 4 This is a challenging short par 4 which requires an accurate tee shot of 200 yards to lay up short of the first fairway bunker.

Be careful with your second shot because the green slopes severely from left to right so this needs to be factored in when taking aim. Anything missing the green on the left-hand side leaves an incredibly intimidating chip shot over a green side

bunker with the green sloping away from you. Beware!

The Fourth Hole - 432 yards Par 4 A testing par 4 from all tees, there is a gentle left to right dogleg shape but with plenty of trouble lurking ahead despite its inviting fairway with out of bounds on your right all the way to the green. Longer hitters may have the advantage as the hole opens up beyond 260 yards. Greenside bunkers on both sides and trees immediately beyond the green will concentrate the mind as you plan your approach.

The Fifth Hole - 349 yards Par 4 A lovely par 4 with a 90 degree dogleg from right to left. A conservative tee shot of some 200 yards will open up the hole and leave a short iron into a green which is guarded by bunkers left and right. Only the very long hitters can attempt to take on the dog leg with their drive but success would leave a very short second into a green that slopes from back to front.

The Sixth Hole - 447 yards, par 4 Stroke index one for the men is fully justified.

Driving uphill you must first avoid the

fairway bunker. A long straight drive will present the opportunity to take on the tough second shot to the large plateau green ahead otherwise laying up and trusting your short game is highly recommended. Dense thickets of Hawthorn are located on both sides at 100 yards from the green and the spine of ground splitting the fairway can easily kick your ball into trouble. The good news is you have only one large bunker greenside right to worry about.

The Seventh Hole - 485 yards par 5 All tees are elevated here which reduces

the overall length slightly to offer a realistic birdie chance. The grass bunker on the right can snare the average length drive straying down that side. Of greater danger though, to the longer drive, is the pond on the left which encroaches into the fairway at 280 yards off the tee to add to three bunkers protecting one of the smaller greens on the course.

The Eighth Hole - 173 yards Par 3 A relatively straight forward hole from a good tee shot. There is a large green if you carry the front bunker but further bunkers

are out of view, one right, one left. Go too long and you could find your ball in the ditch. Beware also of out of bounds and a ditch along the left-hand side from tee to green.

The Ninth Hole - 452 yards Par 5 The shortest par 5 on the golf course measuring 452 yards from the White tee.

This is a narrow tee shot with Out of bounds running the whole length of the hole on the left-hand side. A decent drive will give you the opportunity to take advantage of this hole and offers a realistic birdie chance.

The Tenth Hole - 327 yards Par 4 An accurate tee shot is required to start the back nine. There is a bunker situated on the left-hand side of the fairway some 200 yards out. The sensible play is to lay up short of the bunker to leave a short iron into the green protected by 2 bunkers left and right of the green.

The Eleventh Hole-129 yards Par 3 The signature hole is a very picturesque par 3 which plays 129 yards from the white tee through a narrow alley of tall trees. A high ball flight is required to take

the trees out of play and be mindful of one greenside bunker on the left which catches a stray shot.

The Twelfth Hole - 407 yards Par 4 From the elevated tees you drive downhill and can clearly see what awaits as the Poplar trees shape the left to right dogleg. The large pear tree on the left side of the fairway adds to the degree of difficulty. A bunker on either side guards the two-tier green and further trouble is in store for errant golf balls on all sides around the green.

The Thirteenth - 382 yards Par 4 A stiff test for everyone here. Uphill all the way and requiring a long straight drive to enable you to be comfortable in hitting the green in the regulation. A lost ball is likely if you stray into the thicket on the left, trees protects the fairway on the right. With a bunker on either side of the green it is well protected and has a steep apron to negotiate at the front. An extra club is recommended.

The Fourteenth Hole - 548 yards Par 5 You are now taking on the longest hole

on the course. Elevated tees provide the perfect view but you must first carry the 100 yards of gorse to reach the fairway.

One fairway bunker partially out of sight to be aware of then it is plain sailing provided you keep it straight, to the green where the customary two bunkers are set to catch you out if your approach is offline.

The Fifteenth Hole - 189 yards Par 3 Turning for home and the final four holes begin at this par three which is another with a trademark elevated tee that provides full view of your target and three bunkers.

Depending on the wind direction, club selection will be anything from a short/ medium iron to a wood. Out of bounds returns to the scene all the way down the right and at the back right of the green.

The Sixteenth Hole - 368 yards Par 4 If you have a good card to this point this is probably the biggest threat of the remaining holes. A sharp dogleg right to left and trouble surrounding you makes this hole a potential ‘card wrecker’. The percentage play is to drive short of the ditch at the corner, which lies about 220

from the back tee. If safely on the fairway you will have a clear sight of the green where one large, half-moon shaped, bunker guards the right front and side.

Be mindful too of the large shrub that is situated short left.

The Seventeenth Hole -385 yards Par 4 The drive from the White tee is through a narrow tunnel of trees and makes for an intimidating shot. There is a fairway bunker at 180 yards from the tee which needs to be negotiated. The shot into the green plays at least one club shorter due to the

green contouring downwards from front to back. The green is also guarded by a bunker on the left and right and can only be seen from the very longest tee shots.

The Eighteenth Hole - 159 yards Par 3 A fantastic finishing hole of some 160 yards from the White tee box. The green is cut into the bank which gives you a testing iron shot played over the valley with 2 deep bunkers guarding the front of the hole. Checking the wind direction and club selection are paramount on this hole to make par.

oday Leamington & County has a healthy membership of circa 650 golfers across several playing categories and a further 80 social members.

Currently the joining fee at Leamington & County has been suspended and there has never been a better time to join. Call the club to arrange a FREE viewing round.

The club are proactive in introducing membership categories that allow everyone to have access to membership with reduced rates up to the age of 35, a Flexible scheme for those who are time poor or simply don’t play as much and our Apprentice scheme was a pioneering project to introduce those new to golf into the golf club membership environment.

For those looking to take up golf our range of coaching groups pre-date much of the activity one now sees more generally in golf and has been adopted by many local clubs as the template to follow.

The club’s 2017 Ladies Captain came through this scheme and many others who have joined the coaching programme have gone on to join the golf club.

Open Competitions

T

he opens at Leamington & County are very popular. The six event Winter Series runs from October to March and is open to both male and female golfers.

The summer events include men’s pairs, senior individual stableford, ladies pairs, senior mixed with ladies team and alliance competitions completing the schedule. All the opens can be entered via the web site.

Opens at Leamington are very popular and early booking is always advised.

rofessional services at the club are provided by Union Golf. We have a well-stocked shop displaying many of the leading brands along with a good selection of club branded golf attire.

Chris Thornton our Head Professional has an excellent reputation as a coach and has helped many members and non-members improve their game. In his lessons Chris’s uses the very latest in coaching technology to provide accurate and worthwhile feedback to his students.

The club also has an excellent reputation for introducing people to golf. A variety of courses run throughout the year both for beginners, improvers and advanced students many of whom go on to join the clubs Apprentice Membership scheme giving them access to the golf course and further tuition.

The clubs practise facilities include a 15 acre practise ground, several short game practise areas, 2 chipping greens, a practise putting green and two hitting nets add to this the facilities available in the academy and at Leamington there really are no excuses!!

pened in May 1909 the original building still forms part of the present-day clubhouse. With panoramic views across the golf course it provides the perfect sanctuary following an enjoyable round of golf.

Offering an extensive menu from the kitchen and a well stocked bar with an array of beers and wines, it provides the perfect setting for relaxing after golf.

The Centenary Lounge has large screen TV’s showing Sky Sport and a full size snooker table.
