Introduction On 1st February 1932 a company was formed by Messrs Douglas Maxwell and Eric Waller following the sale of some of their grocery and fruiterer business premises.

The aim was to found a golf club under their new company name of Wallisdown (Bournemouth) Golf Club. Shares in the company were created contributing to the capital of ÂŁ8,000 which the company had amassed. In December 1932 negotiations were initiated with Lord Wimborne for the purchase of land on Canford Heath. By the end of March 1933 the deal was sealed. The then Board of Trade refused to sanction the chosen name for the company, which then remained as B & EP (Direct Supplies) Limited. The golf club was registered as Northbourne Golf Club. The club was formally opened in 1934 with an exhibition match between Percy Alliss (seated centre in black jacket), professional at Ferndown GC, and Alf Padgham.

In 1959 it was renamed New Northbourne Golf Club by the new owner, Mr Billy Knott. He sold it on in 1972 but the new owner went bankrupt in 1976. The club members were offered the opportunity to raise capital for the purchase of the course. This was successfully achieved and the club was renamed Knighton Heath Golf Club.

Introduction Continued Knighton Heath Golf Club is situated just north of the Bournemouth and Poole conurbation but whilst playing the course you will often feel as if you are in the heart of the countryside. It is a genuine heathland course, set in 90 acres of high ground beside Canford Heath and offers a great place to play golf in Dorset. Its proximity to the heath and the wildlife which live there means you are often able to catch sight of grazing deer, birds of prey and other wildlife all whilst enjoying your round of golf. The course is made all the more interesting by a varied change of elevation and at key points offers good views across the Stour valley and beyond.

A fair but testing course, it offers a great challenge to all golfers no matter what their ability and the club prides itself in being well known for its warm, friendly welcome.

As testament to the overall package on offer to you is that Knighton Heath is continually being asked to host Dorset county events.

About the Course The course is expertly maintained by our course manager and his highly motivated and enthusiastic team. As such the course is always in superb condition, and boasts arguably some of the best greens in Dorset.

You will need to plot your way around the course which is heavily treelined with some narrow fairways. The greens are in superb condition and the course presents an excellent test of golf for players of all standards.

Our course manager and his team continually strive to improve the course, and recent changes have certainly enhanced the overall presentation.

For men playing off the competition tees (Blue) the course measures 6,065 yards. However despite its modest length by modern standards do not let this fool you into thinking it will be easy! With the Standard Scratch Score of 70 matching the par, you will understand that Knighton Heath is no pushover.

The course for ladies (Red tees) measures 5,474 yards. Although the ladies get an extra shot, with the 17th being played as a par 5, the par of 71 is actually two strokes fewer than the Standard Scratch Score.

From the White tees the course measures 5,838 yards. These tees are allocated to members ‘general’ play and are also those used by any visiting societies.

To assist you with yardages each fairway has 150 yard marker posts and 100 marker discs in the centre of the fairway – both to the centre of the green.

On the greens we use a colour convention to indicate front (red), centre (yellow) and white (rear) in rotation.

Practice Facilities Knighton Heath Golf Club is committed to offering its members all the facilities possible to enable members the chance to become as proficient at this great game of golf as their talent and application allows.

A large practice area adjacent to the course provides the opportunity to practise your full swing.

Additionally, a very nice putting green mirrors the fine surfaces to be found out on the course.

For those where time is at a premium, there are driving nets not far from the first tee.

The short game is not overlooked, either, with a chipping practice area enabling the dedicated player the chance to work on those roundsaving shots around the green. The words “sand save� could quickly be added to your golfing vocabulary once you become proficient from our practice bunker.

Clubhouse and Functions The clubhouse offers great comfort and a welcoming atmosphere in which to socialise and relax either after a round of golf or as members of the club. Favourable comments are regularly received from visitors regarding the bar and catering facilities at the club.

The bar is well stocked with a wide selection of draught and bottled beers, wines, and spirits and a choice of soft drinks. Hot and cold food is served daily seven days a week. You can enjoy a good selection of snacks at the bar or enjoy a filling two-course or three-course meal.

The club is also able to cater for smaller functions and would be delighted for you to consider Knighton Heath to host your birthday or anniversary party or retirement celebration. Our experienced staff will ensure you do not have to worry, enabling you to relax and enjoy your special occasion safe in the knowledge your guests are in good hands.

We can accommodate up to 80 people for a sit-down meal.

Social Activities With the excellent facilities available and a sociable, friendly group of members, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the off-course benefits of being a member at Knighton Heath Golf Club.

An extensive and varied programme of social events is organised throughout the year, with the aim being that there should be something to appeal to everyone, whatever their taste in entertainment.

Music figures highly on the list of our members’ favourite off-course interests and the likes of a summer party, tribute dinner dance and autumn dance/disco will often be found among the calendar of events.

In December there is a Christmas lunch followed by carol singing as well as a Christmas Dinner Dance or New Year’s Eve party.

These social occasions range from a series of quiz evenings throughout the year to formal sit-down dinners and shows by invited performers such as tribute acts and comedians.

Visitor Information We welcome visitors to Knighton Heath Golf Club on weekdays, subject to tee reservations, and they can be assured of a warm welcome with first-class catering after their round which only complements what we are confident is some of the best golf in Dorset.

Unless signed in and playing in with a member as a guest, visitors may only play between 10am and noon and from 1.30pm onwards in the summer months weekdays. These times change to 10am and 11am and after 12.30pm when the clocks go back in the autumn.

At weekends, unless signed in by a member, visitors may only play after 1pm.

In the less busy winter months in particular there are some outstanding deals to be had offering golf followed by a snack or more substantial meal, all for a very reasonable price. Open Golf Events Knighton Heath Golf Club is always delighted to showcase its outstanding course and offers golfers of all abilities the opportunity to play here in a series of Open competitions which are held throughout the year.

We hold Opens each year for all sections of the club and include a Mixed Open. In addition, the ladies also run at least one Open Bowmaker featuring teams of three, and host a Coffee Morning towards the end of the season.

With the exception of the Junior event, which is a medal for individual players, the competitions are aimed at pairs or teams.

These events are an excellent way to enjoy the Knighton Heath golfing experience, play on one of the region’s most highlyregarded courses, meet new friends and see how your game stands up to the rigours of competition! If you are looking for some great golf in Dorset, why not give us a try?

Membership Membership of Knighton Heath GC offers you a wide variety of benefits irrespective of whether you already have a handicap, wish to obtain one or simply play social golf.

The club has four main sections: Men, Ladies, Seniors, Juniors and is committed to full equality. The majority of our members are Full members.

Men The normal calendar has a monthly medal and/or stableford competition.

These competitions are generally held on a Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday with each competition being run as an individual event.

Trophy competitions are currently held at weekends.

Ladies The majority of this section meets regularly on a Tuesday morning when there is normally some form of competition for the members. Subject to other bookings time normally exists for social golf after the competitions.

Our ‘alternate day’ ladies who are unable to play on a Tuesday have an opportunity to play competitions, or social golf, with other ‘working’ ladies at weekends.

Whilst the majority of club trophy competitions are held either on a Tuesday some are held at the weekend.

Seniors This section is by far the biggest section within the club and they meet regularly on a Monday morning. This is generally the time they play their internal competitions whilst inter-club matches are normally played on another weekday.

Membership Continued Juniors Our excellent junior section is very active and is run by the Junior Organiser and Club Professional. We are proud to have been awarded the prestigious GolfMark accreditation. This is a national scheme run by England Golf that identifies and recognises junior and beginner-friendly golf facilities. Our High Achiever status puts us among the upper echelon of GolfMark clubs both within Dorset and across the country.

Coaching takes place on either Saturdays and Sundays (check our website for current dates and times) under the expert guidance of PGA Golf Professional.

Competitions have been organised most months of the year and in addition financial support is given wherever possible to juniors wishing to enter other Open competitions. Our subscription rates are excellent value, with attractive discounts being offered in two age categories, for golfers under 14 and for those aged 14-17.

How to Find Us The club can be found three miles north of Poole at the junction of the A348 and the A3049. If on the A348 southbound towards Poole, look for the Mountbatten roundabout, (at the junction with the A3049), and take the third exit down Francis Avenue. The course will be found at the end of the road.

For satellite navigation purposes our postcode is BH11 8NX.

From the M27 From the M27, take the A31 towards Ringwood. Continue on the A31 and then take the A348 towards Poole. Travel through Ferndown and Longham and take the 1st exit from the second mini-roundabout at Longham. Continue on the A348 over the river and proceed straight on over the next two roundabouts, and at the third roundabout, (the Mountbatten), take the right exit and proceed down Francis Avenue.

The golf club is at the end of the road.

By Train The nearest mainline station is Bournemouth and taxis are available for what should be around a 10-15 minute journey only.
