History

Kirby Muxloe Golf Club was founded in October 1893 as a nine-hole course. In those days it was described as “... a very fair inland green and in summer little inconvenience is experienced from long grass, the turf being for the most part of good golfing character…”.

On the 27 February 1894 it was reported that the first monthly medal was played on Thursday and Saturday.

The first clubhouse was built in June 1909.

In 1926 the course was restyled as an 18hole course.

Over the years many changes have occurred to both the Golf Course and the Clubhouse.

The first Clubhouse was situated where the large bungalow is situated at the top right-hand side of the field beyond the car park gate. After the First World War this was seen as inadequate for the growing membership. Full development of the new Clubhouse was not achieved until 1926 on its present site. Over the years since then many changes and improvements have been made. Accommodation for the Steward was finally provided in a flat built above the lounge in 1967.

In 1986 a fire nearly destroyed the building but for the prompt action of various members and the fire service.

Whilst primarily a golf club, Kirby Muxloe Golf Club has had a reputation over many years for having a friendly and sociable atmosphere which still exists today.

After changes caused by war from 1940 to 1948, when land was required for agricultural purposes, part of the course went “under the plough”.

It was redesigned in 1949 and again in 1951 with only minor alterations until 1988 when three holes were built to replace the then existing 1st, 7th and 9th. The old holes were taken out of play and the course in its present form was opened in 1993 with the addition of two new greens - the 11th in 2004 and the 4th in 2015.

On the course itself the “signature” hole has got to be the 5th which, from about 1940 has been played from a tee situated some 100 yards off the course in a field, from this tee the ball is played back onto the course. This is one of only three such tees to be found in the country.

The practice facilities at the Club are amongst the best in Leicestershire and include a covered range, two putting greens and a short game area with practice bunkers.

In 2016, the club was proud to play host to England Golf for their English Senior Men’s Open Amatuer Championship (cohosted with Rothley Park). Richard Latham (Woodhall Spa) won the event by five strokes having opened the tournament with a 67 at Kirby Muxloe, followed it with a 71 at Rothley Park and then shot 75 on the final day back at Kirby.

Kirby Muxloe Golf Club is now approaching its 125th anniversary. It is still going strong and is one of the most sought-after golfing venues in Leicestershire.

We hope that you have found this potted history of the Club taken from our Centenary book enjoyable and informative.

In 2018, we are playing host to the English Women’s Open Matchplay Championship.

The Course Tour Hole 2

Our lovely, mature parkland course in the village of Kirby Muxloe has been in existence since 1893 and has an abundance of natural features.

The course measures 6444 yards from the blue competition tees, visitors will normally play the course at 6292 yards, white, or 6074 yellow.

The ladies course is 5425 yards. All tees offer a good test of golf on a course which is a fair and enjoyable experience.

Hole 1 - 404 Yards, Par 4

Hole 2 - 184 Yards, Par 3

The 1st is a very demanding right to left dog leg par 4. It requires a drawn tee shot to the corner of the dog leg which enables you to see the green. For the longer hitters there is a fairway bunker to avoid on the dog leg. The second shot is uphill to a raised green with two green side bunkers on the right-hand side. You should always take one more club than you think

The 2nd hole is a difficult downhill par 3.

The green is well guarded with two big bunkers on the right and one on the left.

It demands a very accurate tee shot. With the tee being so high, the hole can be affected by the wind. It is better to take one more club than you think, as most of the trouble is at the front.

Hole 5

Hole 3 - 375 Yards, Par 4 The 3rd hole is again a slight dog leg right to left climbing uphill all the way to the green. It plays a lot further than you think because you will get very little run on the ball. Your tee shot is better hit with draw just like the first.

There are trees on the right which are very dense, with big poplar trees to catch the errant drive down the left.

Your second shot is to an elevated green which is long and very narrow. There is a big fairway bunker some 50 yds from the

green and a greenside bunker to the left.

It is advisable to take one club more than you think for your second shot.

Hole 4 - 472 Yards, Par 4 The 4th hole is a tremendous long par 4.

The tee shot requires as much length as you can produce from your driver. There is a fairway bunker on the right for the short-sliced drive and a big bunker down the left for the longer hitter. You need to carry your drive over 230 yds before you are able to see the green situated below, which has a ditch 40yds from the green

and runs across the fairway. With this in mind and the downhill second shot you should only hit a short iron to lay up in front of the ditch. For the golfer who can see the green it is a very challenging second shot that requires a perfect high shot into a small green that has a greenside bunker on the right.

Hole 5 - 284 Yards, Par 4 The 5th hole is one of only a few in the country where you will tee off from adjacent field back on to the golf course.

bounds. The tee shot requires a slight fade round the trees in front of the tee. Long hitters can try and drive the green but you must be careful of the out of bounds on the left. The best way to play the hole is take a rescue club which will leave you a short iron to the green. There is a fairway bunker on the left that is 20 yds from the green and a green side bunker on the right.

Hole 6 - 465 Yards, Par 4 The 6th Hole is the Stroke one and is the most challenging on the course. It is a

semi blind tee shot with trees each side of a wide fairway which has a ridge forming a slight hog back effect running down the centre and a rather big dip right of centre at 200 yds. The second shot is determined by how far your tee shot has gone, to allow you to go for the green you need to be flying the ball in as there is a ditch right across the entrance which you have to carry that is 50 yds short of the green.

With it being stroke index one, I advise golfers to lay up and go for a chip and putt. There is a green side bunker short and right of the green.

Hole 7 - 375 Yards, Par 4 The 7th Hole is an excellent dog leg right.

The Tee shot has to be very accurate with a ditch running down the left-hand side and trees down the right to the corner of the dog leg. From there you will be faced with a second of about 150 yds to a green which is well bunkered to the left and right, with a large laurel bush behind.

Caution is a good way to describe how you play this hole.

Hole 8

Hole 8 - 303 Yards, Par 4

Hole 9 - 385 Yards, Par 4

The 8th hole is a very tricky dog leg right to left. The tee shot needs to be at the marker post at the top of the hill as the land runs from right to left towards the ditch which runs down the left-hand side of the hole. There are trees and heavy rough on the right of the fairway ready to catch the badly sliced tee shot. The second shot will be played with the ball above your feet to a green sloping from right to left and from front to back with two bunkers on the left-hand side of the green to catch the errant shot.

The 9th Hole is a very good straight par 4 that has a big tree on the left side of the fairway at about 100 yds from the tee.

The fairway runs right to left with trees on the right side and two bunkers down the left to catch an inaccurate tee shot.

The fairway has ridge and furrows running across, all the way to the green so you will always be faced with a difficult lie for your second shot. There is a bunker short right, but this is a very good line for hitting into the green, with the land sloping towards the green side bunker on the left it makes

for a tough second shot. One club more is good advice as there is no problem just over the back.

Hole 10 - 488 Yards, Par 5 The 10th hole is an excellent par 5 which if played sensibly can be a real reward hole and helps start your back nine off with great confidence. The tee shot requires a lot of thought!! There is a fairway bunker down the left side on your driving distance and a bunker on the right to catch the longer hitter. If you are very accurate there is a small gap between the

two. The second shot needs to be kept down the left side of the fairway so to create a good angle into the green. The green slopes from back to front and left to right. Always advisable to club down and aim for the right side of the green so you leave yourself an uphill straight putt.

Hole 11 - 440 Yards, Par 4 The 11th hole was extended about four years ago and has now become the second hardest hole on the course, some members say our hardest. The tee shot requires a long drive down the right side

of the fairway so as to position yourself for the second shot, there are trees right and left but anything down the left side means you will be laying up short of the lake which is in front of the green. If you are laying up, make sure you leave yourself about 100 yds in so you won’t be affected by the overhanging trees near the lake. The excellent 2 tier green will receive a good shot, so make sure you hit one more than you think but be careful, over the back of the green is to be avoided. There is also a green side bunker on the right. Good Luck!!!

Hole 12 - 175 Yards, Par 3 The first of our three par threes on the back nine. An uphill tee shot to a wellguarded green with green side bunkers left and right. The green slopes from front to back and becomes a lot wider towards the back of the green so an extra club is recommended. But bear in mind you may leave yourself a downhill putt, so be very careful.

Hole 13 - 382 Yards, Par 4 The 13th hole is an excellent dog leg from left to right par four. It requires an accurate tee shot that should favour the left-hand side of the fairway. There is bunker on the left side of the fairway which is 150 yards from the green. The trees down the right side of the fairway should be avoided as they are very dense and will cost you a shot. The second shot has to be hit over a ditch that runs diagonally from left to right towards the green. There is a bunker on the left some 30 yds from the green and two green

side bunkers left and right. The green has undulations from front to back so making for a very difficult putt. Don`t worry if you drop a shot.

Hole 14 - 354 Yards, Par 4

The 15th hole is an easy par 5 if played sensibly. The tee shot needs to be kept down the left-hand side as there are two fairway bunkers down the right that can easily be reached. You can make a decision to lay up short of the fairway bunker which is on the right side of the fairway 100 yds from the green, or hit a fairway wood and try and get as close

to the green as you can. The green is protected by three green side bunkers so an accurate approach is required.

Hole 16 - 178 Yards, Par 3 The 16th Hole is the toughest par 3 on the course. The main reason is the green is so narrow and is surrounded by four bunkers. If you miss the green left or right you will have a difficult chip to keep the ball on the green. The most sensible way to play the hole if you have a good score going is play short then you will leave yourself a straight pitch up the green.

Hole 17 - 504 Yards, Par 5 The 17th Hole is a fantastic golf hole and one that has destroyed many a scorecard.

The tee shot has to be threaded through a big avenue of trees before you reach the fairway. If you are not a straight hitter it would be advisable to hit a club that you have confidence in. Once on the fairway you need to take a club that will leave you your favourite distance from the green because your next shot is over a big lake and there is no bail out. The green has a green side bunker on the left-hand side and there is a big tree at the back of the

green. If you make a PAR be proud of yourself!!

Hole 18 - 160 Yards, Par 3 The 18th is a beautiful finishing hole which is overlooked by the clubhouse.

You will require a very accurate tee shot as there are five green side bunkers around a very narrow green waiting for an errant drive. The green runs from back to front so will receive a good shot. Always take one more club than you think.

Membership

Kirby Muxloe has an active membership of more than 700, including men, ladies and juniors. We have a full calendar of competitions throughout the playing season, and a number during the winter period.

We have a rich social diary in our Club, with an event of some sort almost every month, where members relax and enjoy the entertainment and each other’s company.

We currently have vacancies and welcome applications for membership from men, ladies and juniors. You will normally be required to be proposed by an existing member. However, if you do not know anyone in the club, please contact the manager who will explain other ways you may join.

It is our privilege to welcome you to Kirby Muxloe Golf Club. You will have already become aware of our rich heritage which dates back to 1893 and we’re now on the eve of our 125th Anniversary.

We are rightly proud of our excellent golfing facilities and offer an interesting and fair challenge to golfers of all abilities.

We are regularly complimented on the condition of our golf course by members, their guests and visitors to Kirby Muxloe.

In the clubhouse, we have recently completed a thorough refurbishment to allow our members to relax in comfort either before their play, after, or both.

Our kitchen has rightly received a great deal of praise for the quality of their produce and as well as the usual golfer’s staples, there are always ‘specials’ on offer. We have continued with our investment into that area of the club to ensure our facilities are up to date to meet the needs of a modern busy kitchen.

We offer a thriving social programme and there are many varied events for members to attend with their guests, including our famed ‘Concert on the Range’ where we convert the Driving Range into a stage and engage live bands to entertain the crowd, made up of members, their guests and residents of Kirby Muxloe on an August evening.

We are very much a members club with a welcoming and friendly atmosphere.

Members of the Ladies Section of Kirby Muxloe Golf Club enjoy a full programme of golfing events throughout the year which offers opportunities to suit your playing ability. Some of which are for silverware and others more of a social nature.

We encourage new lady members to enter our competitions and have members willing to mark cards for handicap purposes so that they can quickly join in our fun.

In addition to competitions here at the club, we have a full range of matches against other clubs in the area, again some are competitive and some are friendlies.

All matches are usually followed by either a meal or an afternoon tea – very civilised!

We are very proud of our Ladies Section and look forward to a successful year both on and off the course.

We have a thriving seniors section of Kirby Muxloe Golf Club and we welcome any member over the age of 59 to join us – contact any of the people listed below for more information.

Our fixture list includes twenty five matches played both home and away with nineteen different clubs from Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, always followed by a meal.

We also have our regular midweek qualifiers, memorial matches, away day, AGM competition and a Christmas team competition with a shotgun start followed by Christmas dinner and prize presentation.
