Welcome

T

he King’s Lynn Golf Club was established in 1923 and moved to its current idyllic location in Castle Rising in the mid-1970s. It has regularly figured in the top 100 English golf courses and its combination of pine and birch tree lined fairways, fast draining fairways and fast firm greens makes for a challenging and enjoyable experience.

There are many competitions over the golfing year, both single events and knockout competitions which are always heavily supported. We also field teams in the Norfolk Golf Union interclub competitions and play in friendly matches against other Norfolk clubs as well as clubs from Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Suffolk. Also playing a regular home and away fixture with South Herts Golf Club.

The club run a number of open events for both Men and Ladies that are always heavily oversubscribed. The Club has reciprocal golfing arrangements with Ipswich Golf Club in Suffolk, Coxmoor Golf Club in Nottinghamshire and Blankney Golf Club in Lincolnshire.

HISTORY

T

he construction of the original golf course commenced at Leziate, five miles east of King’s Lynn, on Wednesday 26th April 1922 and was opened

by Mr Holcombe Ingleby, High Sheriff of Norfolk on 30th May 1923 as King’s Lynn and District Golf Club. The opening was followed by an exhibition match between James Baird and Mr J G Sherlock.

There was immediate interest in joining the club from professional people and business owners in the area and by the time the first Annual General Meeting was held on 26 April 1924 the club had attracted 216 members with gentlemen paying three guineas each per annum and ladies two guineas.

The Club moved to its present idyllic location in 1975. The course was the first to be designed by the acclaimed Peter Allis/Dave Thomas partnership and has matured into the magnificent challenge now considered by golfers and golf writers alike to be one of the finest and most scenic inland courses in East Anglia.

COURSE TOUR

1st - The first hole is a testing opener with narrow fairway and OOB on the left.

Favour the right side to avoid the fairway bunker. OOB long and bunkers to the left and right offer a demanding second shot to the first green.

2nd - This hole looks short on paper but is certainly not easy. An ideal drive would be placed right side of centre on this dogleg right to left. A short to mid iron left to a wide green guarded by trees on the right, a dell on the left and a deep front bunker.

3rd - Stroke index one and for good reason. A left to right dogleg with a sloping left to right fairway. If you manage to avoid the trees off the tee your second shot is uphill to a narrow green sloping back to front with bunkers either side.

Making four here feels like a birdie!

4th - A downhill blind tee shot. The wind turbine is an ideal line. If your tee shot reaches the flat then an uphill second shot to the left is what greets you. The green slopes left to right towards a deep bunker.

5th - A very well-protected short hole.

Large trees either side and bunkers short and right await. If you find the green you will have a good chance of a two on the gentle back to front sloping surface.

6th - A right to left flight is desired off the tee, this will leave you with a good look at this deceptively tricky green. A bunker short left; run off right and OOB down the left means hitting the green is crucial here.

7th Hole - Hitting the fairway here may not necessarily guarantee you a look at the green. A small silver birch splits this left to right dogleg. If the tree is avoided it leaves you with a fairly straightforward

8th - A very demanding hole with a wellpositioned bunker on the corner of the left to right dogleg. Longer hitters beware of running out of fairway. An uphill second shot to a flat green but protected by a bunker short right and a long deep bunker to the left. Four is a great score.

9th - First of the par 5’s. A stunning view from the elevated tee all the way to the green, some 500+ yards away. A good straight drive required. Decisions to be made with the second shot, shorter hitters must avoid the right-side fairway bunker with their layup, whilst longer hitters may try to make the green. A swale before the green and a large bunker on the left are

ready to swallow up any errant approach shots.

10th - A drive down the left side will give you the best sight at the green. An uphill second shot with bunker left and right. Be sure to keep your ball below the flag, this green is very fast from back to front.

11th - About as wide as Kings Lynn gets but don’t let that fool you. Ditches left and right, as well as water in play right of the green. Stroke index 2, take care.

12th - The longest of the par 3’s at 200 plus yards. An upslope before the green and bunkers guarding the bunkers left and right.

13th - The final par 5. Two ditches in play off the tee that run the full width of the fairway. An ideal drive is down the right around 220 yards, this will put you in prime position. There is a bunker short of the green as well as a front right trap guarding this small target.

14th - A right to left flight is need from the tee. The same ditch from 13 runs across the fairway but only comes into play for the long hitters or for miss-hit second shots. A large green protected by a bunker short right and greenside left.

15th - Bunkers left and right await anything offline from the tee. Avoiding the front right bunker leaves you a good birdie chance on this short par 4.

16th - The final par 3. Long narrow green can play three clubs different from front to back. Front bunkers and slopes off either side of the green protect this short hole.

18th - Right to left dogleg takes you home.

Captains bunker on the right awaits your approach shot. A two tiered green and a strong right to left slope on this generously proportioned green.

17th - A beautiful sweeping right to left dogleg. Keep right off the tee to get the best sight of the green. Sloping from back right to front left with a bunker up the left side and short right.

The Clubhouse

T

he club has earned a longstanding reputation for its friendly welcome and excellent food, and the large and airy lounge overlooks the 18th green. You can watch as golfers wend their way back to the Clubhouse.

We offer a wide selection of food prepared in house by our team. Within the bar and restaurant we offer breakfasts, bar snacks, lunches, buffets and formal dining. The fully stocked bar offers a diverse selection of refreshments.
