irton Golf Club celebrated 80 years in existence in November 2016 and is a successful, well-equipped and well-organised members club with excellent facilities sitting in the village of Girton on the edge of Cambridge.

It is known as a no “airs and graces” club, a real golf club, not a multi-sports profit centre.

A club where you can just turn up, and be pretty sure of an offer of a game from a fellow member. Above all, a friendly club, where anyone can join, find a welcome and become integrated as part of a family. As Vanda Webb, our long serving club secretary said “We are a traditional golf club: what we do, we do very well”. Our Golf Club is probably best known for its friendly and relaxed atmosphere that

ensures that a round of golf, no matter how tough on the day, is a pleasurable experience.

GGC is owned and run by its members, for its members, currently numbering around 750.

The Directors and Management Committees make the policy and strategic decisions, which are implemented by the Director of Golf Alan Fletcher and his staff. He leads and coordinates the work of the full-time golf professionals, shop, bar, catering, administration and greenkeeping functions.

The clubhouse is an extensive light and airy modern complex, with a smartly furnished lounge, a restaurant and two bars, one spike, recently refurbished locker rooms as well as offices, meeting rooms and the professionals’ shop - all entered through a welcoming archway from the extensive car park. There is also a State of the Art studio for golf swing and putting analysis used extensively by the Club Professionals for teaching and club fitting and an enormous practice ground which has

been recently renovated and enhanced to offer facilities for both range ball and own ball users. located where Girton meets the fenland levels with drainage ditches crossing a number of holes this is an easy walking parkland course, where the greens are rated among the best in Cambridgeshire.

All of the Club and Ladies’ Major competitions are held at weekends ensuring everyone can get involved Visitors and societies are welcomed at Girton although if an unplanned visit is wanted a phone call is always advised to ensure that you avoid any tee closures for competitions, societies and also peak tee traffic as we do not currently operate tee times.

ituated at the end of Dodford Lane, Girton, the club has progressed a very long way since its foundation in 1936 as a nine hole course.

with a gang mower towed behind an old Austin Seven. Nowadays, the green-keeping staff has all the modern machinery required to keep the course immaculate and the greens perfect.

In 1965 the members purchased the freehold of the course and set up a company controlled by them, - and the club has never looked back.

More land was purchased, and the course was extended to 18 holes in 1979 and the spacious new clubhouse was opened in 1992. The present highly manicured parkland course is very different from the early days when club members cut the fairways themselves

Continuous investment has taken place in remodelling the course, in planting, drainage and implementing a full irrigation system to the greens and tee areas.

The course is now a visual delight with a profusion of trees and flowering shrubs bordering its fairways and boundaries. There is also an abundance of wildlife seen at the club both in the skies and on the ground – it is always worth looking up when playing

The keen golfer will find that whilst the course is comparatively flat it is quite tight and represents a testing challenge of accuracy and control. It is a par 69 of 6012 yards, with two particularly challenging short holes of some 133 and 138 yards (the 4th and the 17th) and an exciting final hole which at 565 yards is one of the longer in the county. from the ladies’ tees the course presents an interesting and demanding 5417 yards at a par 72.

o matter whether you want to play every day or just once a week, or whether you are 6 or 80 years old (and we do have a good number of very active members of well over 80), Girton prides itself on offering a membership category that will suit you. We offer a warm, friendly welcome to members of all ages and golfing ability. Whilst a full membership fees list is available, the categories available are:

7 and 5 Day Adult membership plus an Associate Membership for those with limited playing opportunities.

Juniors with price brackets including Under 14, 15 – 17, 18 – 21 and 21 – 30 all at low attractive costs.

Seniors’ Section G

irton Golf Club has a thriving and very popular Seniors’ Section with many of the club members being over 55 years old and about 60 of those choosing to align themselves with the seniors’ activities.

There is a roll up on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 7:30am with somewhere between 16 and 36 players turning up and drawing lots for playing partners. These groups can play Stableford or Stroke Play rounds and twice a month there are medal rounds to ensure that Club handicaps reflect current abilities.

Often other games are played for variety and there is an Invitation Day plus, Spring,

Autumn and Winter meets for Trophies, with a “collar and tie” lunch afterwards and prize giving. During the summer months we play 14 other local clubs home and away in matches, all friendlies, with again a lunch to follow.

Players are expected to wear Girton Golf Club colours and again wear collar, tie and jacket for lunch. The Seniors Captain selects a team not solely based on ability for each particular match trying to ensure that all get a game or two during the season.

Other activities are organised during the year for example Away Days, Christmas or New Year Dinners, coaching by the club professionals and many of the seniors meet on other days

for friendly rounds – just turning up at the club is usually sufficient to find a game with other members.

Our social activities carry a charge, of course, to cover costs, but there is no annual subscription. We have a Seniors Captain and Vice-Captain that change every year, and a Treasurer, fixture’s Secretary, New Member’s Co-ordinator and an Events Organiser who make up the committee with the immediate past captain.

We welcome all new members whatever their standard and offer a friendly and inclusive round of golf to anyone over 55 who wants to enjoy themselves on the golf course.

Ladies’ Section T

here is a strong and very active Ladies section at Girton with approaching 100 members. On both Tuesdays and Thursdays there are two times when you can roll up and get a game with other ladies and there is a list of members in the locker room happy to mark cards and play with new members.

Medal, Stableford and Eclectic competitions take place mid-week and at weekends throughout the year and 9 hole qualifiers, aimed primarily at higher handicappers, can be played.

There are many competitions to involve all level of players: these include pairs, teams and mixed competitions and many fun competitions such as the ‘Turkey Trot’ and our newly introduced (2016) competition,

‘The Bramble’. The 14 major competitions are held mainly at weekends, Girton Ladies play a number of ‘Friendly’ matches against local clubs and all players including high handicappers are welcomed and encouraged to take part in these. On a more serious note we also enter teams into the Grace Norman, Jean Wilkinson and Daily Mail foursomes to name but a few.

Junior Section T

he Junior Section at Girton GC is managed by the junior organiser Dave Upchurch. We have an active membership of both male and female juniors and membership starts at ÂŁ40 dependant on age.

Competitions are organised against other local golf clubs along with the CAGu junior league.

In addition there are many club competitions throughout the year that juniors are welcome to play in alongside their own junior medals and championship.

Junior coaching happens weekly at the club with lots of activities for all levels of golfers.

Dean Saunders holds a Junior 6-Week Passport Program every Sunday which is extremely popular often with a waiting list of new members.

The Pro Shop is also the place to go to hire pull trolleys, while electric trolleys and buggies can be hired too, although booking in advance is advisable.

We also specialise in bespoke custom-fitting clubs so that the golfer can have a set of clubs made specifically suited to their swing, rather than having to adapt their technique to fit a piece of equipment bought off the rack.

The Professional Team T

he Professional team at Girton is headed by Director of Golf and Head Professional Alan Fletcher who is more than ably supported by Dean Saunders PGA Teaching Professional & Cambridgeshire County Boys & Girls Development Coach and Ollie Fullerton Assistant PGA Professional.

As well as being Director of Golf the Head Professional at Girton Golf Club Alan fletcher is a young, energetic and exciting PGA AA qualified Professional, a qualified personal trainer and golf specific fitness coach who works with players and non-golfers alike.

Alan’s goal is to improve a player’s performance through an holistic approach making sure each player understands their own game and what they need to do outside of swing technique to improve. Alan has worked with all levels of golfers and welcomes the chance to work with any player who wants to learn and improve in any area.

In addition to being Head Professional at Girton, Alan is also Cambridgeshire Girls Head Coach and also works with the County ladies and boys as well as working closely with students at Cambridge Regional College and Anglian Ruskin university. Alan is keen to work with all levels of golfer, and has the ambitions to make Girton Golf Club the go to place for coaching, membership and playing golf. Alan works holistically with his players and likes to work with players to improve their golf scores not just their golf swings. He is becoming known in the region for his short game and putting coaching, as well as working with players on their overall approach.

Ollie Fullerton

Dean spent the majority of his professional career at John O’Gaunt Golf Club where he worked for six years as Assistant Professional.

He is head junior coach at Girton Golf Club and teaches members and visitors of all ages and abilities, centring his coaching on functional changes rather than aesthetics. This year he has been rewarded for all his hard work and has been selected as the prestigious National foremost Assistant Professional of the Year for 2016.

Ollie started playing at the age of 12 and had obtained a 3 handicap at the age of 15. from there he was selected to represent Cambridgeshire county u16s and progressed to the Under 18s and finally to the Men’s A Team and reaching a scratch handicap at 18. for the next few years he competed in elite amateur competitions throughout the UK; including The English and Welsh Amateur Championships, reducing his handicap to

+2.5. His best amateur achievement would be winning the Waterford Trophy at Sundridge Park Golf Club in 2013, this earned him a place in The World Golf Rankings and gave him a 21st place finish in England’s Order of Merit that year. Now having turned professional he is working as trainee assistant and shop manager at Girton Golf Club offering coaching to beginners and high handicappers, specialising in bespoke custom fitting.

olf coaching is available at Girton Golf Club 7 days a week and until 9pm during the week. We have three teaching professionals on site and are able to cater for all abilities and ages.

Golf Coaching takes place both indoor in the Swing Studio and outside on the putting green or the extensive practice field, where there is a covered area for the days with more inclement weather.

Junior coaching happens weekly at the club with lots of activities for all levels of golfers. Dean holds a very popular Junior 6-Week Passport Program every Sunday at 1pm, often with a waiting list of young members wishing to join.

irton Golf Club prides itself on the friendly welcome afforded to members and visitors by our Bar and Catering Staff headed by our Steward Chris and Head Chef Dayne.

Chris and his staff welcome you to the clubhouse as well as running many of the fantastic events and celebrations that regularly happen at Girton Golf Club.

The Clubhouse consists of a lounge bar that opens onto the formal dining area and a separate

spike bar – all comfortably furnished with a variety of seating options. The lounge and dining areas can easily be separated to give 2 discreet rooms for private dining and/or meetings but opened up can sit up to about 100 people. The bar that serves both lounge and spike bar is extremely well stocked with a variety of draught and bottled beers and lagers with a good selection of wines and spirits. light meals and snacks can be ordered and there is a “hot plate” for those people with time just to grab a hot freshly made sausage roll or equivalent. There is also a full menu with daily lunchtime specials available.

In addition there is also a separate meeting room, The Eddie Douglas Room, that can comfortably sit 12 people in a board meeting type setting with views over the golf course and ideal for those off site meetings for organisations that require a quiet catered environment as an alternative to in house meeting rooms or hotels.

The Clubhouse also contains the administration office and both male and female locker rooms with direct access from the sheltered outside. Opposite the Men’s locker room door is the custom built unit housing the swing and putting studio.

Travelling to Girton Golf Club is a short and simple journey from the M11 or A14 being just 10 minutes from their junction and from the centre of Cambridge with ample free car parking at the club. Your day can start with coffee/tea and bacon rolls or whatever you have ordered in the clubhouse before the on course fun begins. You may well have spent some time warming up on the practise field with balls provided by the Pro shop, and even perhaps have received a little coaching from one of our qualified professionals. Walk past the putting green and short chipping area to our upgraded locker rooms which offer a comfortable environment to change into your

golfing shoes, and it is out onto the first tee.

Golf trolleys are available for those who did not bring their own, and buggies for those that prefer not to walk the course.

We will have closed the tee for your dedicated starting times and one of our staff can act as starter for you to ensure the occasion feels like a real competitive round. You will have discussed with the Pro Shop what you require in terms of mini competitions be they nearest the pin on a par 3, nearest the pin in 2 on a par 4, longest drive, or anything else on which you and they have agreed, and the course will have been set up accordingly.

Presentation gifts of ball markers, pitch repairers, balls etc., along with pre prepared score cards, drinks, snacks, course guides etc. will previously have been handed out to your guests when registering. A large white board can be waiting for final scores to be entered so all can see how the competition is progressing; alternatively the scores can be kept secret so the result is a surprise to all.

18, 27 or 36 holes can be played and refreshments arranged accordingly be that breakfast, lunch, snacks after 9 holes (at our

halfway house), and/or dinner at the end.

Our clubhouse can cater for groups up to 100 and the menu will be discussed with you and can be as formal or relaxed as you wish. The Director of Golf, Alan fletcher, can be available for prize giving, if required, and also to give a talk/presentation following on the golfing theme. The bar during the day can be on a pay as you go basis, or a fully funded bar, perhaps to a financial limit.
