Welcome

T

he Chairman, Captain and Ladies’ Captain offer you a warm welcome on behalf of the members, committee and staff of Gillingham Golf Club; a private members’ club with over 100 years of history. Formally laid out by James Braid in 1919 and constructed by the army, our course remains a challenge after being updated by Donald Steel in the 1990s with its treelined fairways and small, fast greens.

We look forward to welcoming you into the clubhouse where you can sample fine food and drinks, and on the course, where your skills may be tested to the limits. You will also be warmly greeted when you visit our Professional in his fully-stocked golf shop.

Whether you are coming for a day out, arranginga corporate or society day, or considering becoming a member of a golf club, Gillingham offers a friendly atmosphere, and a course that appeals to golfers of all levels.

Situated in the Medway Towns within five minutes of the M2, Gillingham is ideally located to welcome visitors from all over the country.

A Golf Club With Over 100 Years of History

G

illingham Golf Club was originally known as The United Services Golf Club, having been set up by serving officers of the Armed Forces. It is not known exactly when the club started, but it was certainly registered with the Royal and Ancient by 1905 as a ninehole course with 50 members. Even the exact location of the original site is uncertain, but it is believed that golf was played north of the railway line, with the Mulberry Inn on the Lower Rainham

Road acting as a convenient HQ. (It is well worth remembering that in those days any field could become an instant golf course without the expensive construction and maintenance work necessary today.) During the Great War, the course, by then on the present site, fell into disuse to become grazing land. In 1919 the club was reinstated and James Braid commissioned to lay out the

new golf course. Born in Scotland, Braid played golf from an early age, working as a clubmaker before turning professional in 1896. He went on to become one of the greatest players of his generation, winning The Open Championship five times. In later life be became equally renowned as a golf course architect with among many of his famous designs being the King’s Course and Queen’s Course at Gleneagles. He also remodelled The Open Championship venue Carnoustie Golf Links.

Our clubhouse in those early days was not the splendid building we have now, but an old army hut purchased for £40! By 1920, a few civilians had been admitted as Honorary Members, at a time when horses were still pulling the mowers to cut the fairways. Many of the club’s old records have been lost, but fortunately the records of the Ladies’ Section have survived to give us an unbroken record back to 1923 when the Ladies’ Section was first formed.

The Second World War saw the course left in the hands of a few elderly but dedicated civilians, who were able to keep four holes in play whilst the remainder was given over to military use as tank traps, antiaircraft and searchlight batteries.

club grew whilst the service element declined and to reflect this, the name was changed to Gillingham and United Services Golf Club.

At the end of hostilities, the War Office was persuaded to rehabilitate the course and by 1950, fifteen holes were back in use for playing golf, with the others following shortly after. In those times of change, the civilian element of the

The Course - Hole By Hole Hole 1, 264 yards, par 4

This hole has probably the widest fairway on the course. The problem for the golfer is whether to lay up before the wide bunker that runs from one side to the other, or to attempt to drive the green avoiding two further bunkers on the right and another on the left of the green.

10 | www.gillinghamgolfclub.co.uk

Hole 2, 355 yards, par 4

On a good day the first view visitors get from this tee is that of the Thames estuary in all its glory. The feature of this hole is the large tree placed in the middle of the fairway protecting the small green down on the left. A ball driven on the wrong side of this tree makes the shot into the green difficult.

Hole 3, 190 yards, par 3

As our longest par 3, this green is invisible from the competition tee and is protected by bunkers both left and right.

Hole 4, 387 yards, par 4

The narrow entrance to this fairway takes players back up the slope to a small green protected by bunkers on both sides waiting to catch the wayward second shot. Don’t be fooled by its appearance as it is rated as the most difficult hole on the course.

Hole 5, 516 yards, par 5

Back down the slope now and with the wind behind, you can make this hole your first birdie of the round, but be aware of the out of bounds to the right from the tee. If the wind is against you, this narrow fairway can be tough. There are bunkers left and right of this green’s narrow entrance.

Hole 6, 140 yards, par 3

Be aware of the Out of Bounds at the back of the green before playing. A large bunker in front of this green will catch anything pitched short and there is also a bunker at the back on the right, and trees on the left, which make this a hole that needs much thought.

Hole 7, 343 yards, par 4

This little par 4 is not as simple as it looks as it holds a stroke index of 3. It winds its way back up the slope to the green, which is slightly elevated and is protected by bunkers on both sides with some trees that come into play from the offset tee.

www.gillinghamgolfclub.co.uk | 11

The Course - Hole By Hole Continued... Hole 8, 166 yards, par 3

A picturesque little hole with views out to the estuary, but do not be fooled as it is protected by strategically placed trees, creating a very narrow entrance. Watch out for the bunker placed on the right which will catch anything short.

12 | www.gillinghamgolfclub.co.uk

Hole 9, 499 yards, par 5

This par 5 takes players back up the gentle hill and is a slight dog-leg left. With the wind against this is a stern test on a normal day and many low handicappers run out of fairway from the tee. The green for this hole is protected by bunkers to the front right and left.

Hole 10, 109 yards, par 3

This is the shortest hole; an easy shot some would say, but bunkers in front and to the right are there to catch the short pitch.

Hole 11, 279 yards, par 4

This fairway appears to be much wider than it is, but the low handicapper will be able to drive to the green. To counter this, there are a few well placed trees and bunkers to catch the wayward shot.

Hole 12, 123 yards, par 3

This looks like a friendly little hole, but with bunkers before and all the way down the lefthand side of the green and trees to right, it should not be underestimated, as it will catch the unwary.

Hole 13, 478 yards, par 4

This is the longest par 4 on the course and is a very narrow driving hole with out of bounds to the left. There are trees on the right and five bunkers also between players and the green, which makes it a very interesting hole.

Hole 14, 454 yards, par 4

This hole is a slight dog-leg left. The Out of Bounds on the left and the trees planted on the right-hand side of the fairway make this hole very tricky and it will require much thought. With the wind against, this will prove to be one of, if not the most difficult hole on the course.

Hole 15, 542 yards, par 5

To the left are Out of Bounds markers on this long par-5 hole and it swings naturally to the left creating a dog-leg to the green, which is not visible from the tee. At around 250 yards there are two bunkers waiting for the stray tee shot and yet another just 100 yards short of the green. Finally, this small green of just 24 yards is protected by bunkers to the left and right.

www.gillinghamgolfclub.co.uk | 13

14 | www.gillinghamgolfclub.co.uk

The Course - Hole By Hole Continued... Hole 16, 140 yards, par 3

A straightforward par 3 played from an elevated tee with Out of Bounds on the left. The approach is protected by a bunker to the front and two more to the right and left of the green.

Hole 17, 336 yards, par 4

A whole copse of trees on the right of this narrow fairway and the Out of Bounds on the left makes this a hole that needs a good straight drive to miss the fairway bunker to the left. If you manage to avoid the hazards when driving, there are two more bunkers to the left of the green to catch the wayward chip.

Hole 18, 150 yards, par 3

Finally, back towards the clubhouse, this is an appealing little hole on which to finish your round. Despite its innocent appearance there are Out of Bounds markers on the left and a small water folly by the green, and also many trees and shrubs strategically placed to catch the wayward. A par or birdie here will make your round at Gillingham an experience you will want to repeat.

Club Professional

M

ARTIN DANIELS - PGA PROFESSIONAL Martin has ‘come home’ in every sense of the word to the town where he was born, raised and educated, and back to the golf club (Gillingham) where he first started golf and joined as a junior on 1st September 1972. He then became an Assistant Professional for six years until 1980. 27 years later he returned to become the Club Professional, a job which he undertook with pride and honour.

Gillingham Golf Club is very much his spiritual home of golf, where he has spent many hours practising, honing his skills to improve his game. He has gained vast experience and knowledge from clubs he has worked at, (Rochester & Cobham, Henley, Barnham Broom, Addington Court and Upchurch) which he brings to Gillingham for the benefit of the members. He has a wide range of skills from coaching to retail,

club repairing to course management and a high standard in playing golf itself! The greatest compliment he was once given, was being referred to as “the professionals’ professional” by upholding the traditions and integrity of this fine but unrelenting game that is golf.

Members’ Golf

M

embers at Gillingham enjoy a full programme of competitions throughout the year, both playing against each other and at home and away in fixtures against other clubs. Matches are always keenly contested but played in a friendly and amicable manner and while it is always nice to win, the enjoyment of the game itself is always more important than the final outcome. The Men enter teams in the Kent A and B Leagues, which features four pairs from

36 | www.gillinghamgolfclub.co.uk

each club doing battle for league points. We also have teams in the Kent Veterans League and the Junior Kent League. The Ladies enter the Pearson Trophy, a popular team event played in a group format over the winter followed by a knockout phase with the eventual winners going on to represent Kent against the champions from Hertfordshire, Surrey and Middlesex. They also enter a team into the countyrun Coombe Cup competition for golfers over the age of 68.

Teams also represent the club in prestigious national competitions such as the Daily Mail Foursomes (both men and ladies), the EGU Gold Medal (men) and the LGU Coronation Foursomes (ladies). Both sections also support the much-loved Cyril Leitch Cup, an annual county event that has been contested for more than 50 years and which is one of the main fundraisers for the Kent Playing Fields Association. Competitors are only permitted to use five clubs, one of which must be a putter.

Friendly matches are a great way to enjoy competitive golf, but in a more relaxed atmosphere. They provide the opportunity to make some new golfing friends and the chance to see some of the county’s other excellent courses. Each section plays a handful of friendly matches each season, which fit nicely in the club calendar alongside the more competitive fixtures on offer. The first weekend of each month is allocated to the Men’s Medal competitions, with Members able to enter both Saturday

and Sunday competitions if they wish, providing that neither is oversubscribed. Those golfers aged 60 and over can also become part of the Veterans’ Section, which enjoys its own additional competitions including a monthly medal. Ladies’ Medal competitions are played monthly on Thursdays and at weekends for Ladies who work during the week. As you would expect at a club with such an historic past as Gillingham, there are a host of honours board competitions open to Men and Women, many of which date

back a number of years. Both strokeplay and matchplay formats are catered for, with some events being contested on a single day and others on a knockout basis throughout the season. In addition, there are monthly shotguns throughout the summer months, various Stablefords, greensomes, foursomes, Opens and other events, as well as an active Mixed golf section, so you can see there really is something for everyone!

Juniors

G

illingham has its own junior section featuring players of all ages, abilities and levels of experience and backed by the support of its own dedicated group of junior organisers. The section has been reinvigorated in recent years, in no small measure to the generous backing of a number of local businesses in addition to the fund-raising efforts from within the club itself. Cups have been added to the silverware already on offer and smart new uniforms

purchased so the juniors look the part in their fixtures in the Kent League. As well as monthly medals the juniors have a chance to win other trophies such as the Spring Cup, which dates back to 1969. A trophy is also contested each year in memory of Hayden Waller, a keen young golfer who tragically lost his life on a school trip. Hayden’s passion for the game saw him have many lessons at Gillingham and he is fondly remembered by all at the club.

The benefits of golf to young people are many. It can result in the forging of new friendships, fuel a sporting passion or even bring out physical or mental attributes that have gone undiscovered. For Gillingham, we know our juniors are our senior members of the future and without them we would ultimately have no club. For that reason we offer very attractive discounts on membership to our younger members. See our website, www.gillinghamgolfclub.co.uk, for further details.

Social Events

T

he club organises many social events and all Members are invited to participate. Some events are formal, in which case formal dress for Ladies and Gents apply, others are listed as “Smart Casual” where the dress code is slightly relaxed. One of the most eagerly-anticipated and well attended functions of the year is the club’s annual dinner, with a sumptuous meal provided by our excellent caterers followed by musical entertainment.

Our Members like their music and are treated to a number of performances during the year featuring popular tribute acts covering songs from the stars so expertly you might thing you were listening to the original entertainer themselves. Some events are free to attend, with catering staff on hand to provide barmeals as required. Other events are inclusive of a meal which can range from hot buffet to full four-course formal dinner. Costs are always kept to a

minimum so why not come along and spend and enjoyable evening and bring along family and friends. Notable dates in the calendar such as New Year’s Eve and Burn’s Night are always celebrated in style and Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without the traditional singing of carols and a children’s party. Please refer to our alternative website to find out more about Clubhouse activities. www.theclubhouse.info
