RABEN RAVENS

The imposing building of the Hungarian Piarist Order, which was occupied for a long time by Eötvös Loránd University, is now primarily used as a secondary school. In 2016 the Order enters into contract with Három Holló Foundation to operate a multifunctional cultural center and literary-art café. The president of Három Holló Foundation is dr. Wilhelm Droste. The German literary historian, author, translator and teacher at Eötvös Loránd University established and managed Dürer Café, and Eckermann Café next to the Goethe Institut in Andrássy Avenue and later in Ráday Street. The Foundation is the publisher of “Drei Raben” literary journal, the thematic issues of which promote Hungarian literature and culture in the German speech area.

“Open Doors, Living House“ The cultural cafe aims to connect organically to the social life of the city, and to inspire the cultural and public activity and social life of the Piarist Secondary School students and staff. As a first step Három Holló Foundation opens a literary café that provides an attractive space for reading, writing and open discussions. The second step is to create a cultural institution, offering a prestigious art centre that gives space for visual arts, theater, film and music. The institute is intended to become part of the German, Swiss, Austrian Literaturhaus network.

At 1. SzabadsajtĂł Street, the 90 m2 hall on the level of Elisabeth bridge will be a literary cafĂŠ and exhibition space. The 50 m2 room on the lower level will be used as a club room. The 250 m2 cellarage will serve as a performance hall, which can accomodate screenings, theatrical performances, concerts, conferences and art events.

We would like to run the Center to a high standard in the field of arts and gastronomy as well. Modelled on the literature houses in the German speech area, we are seeking opportunities for collaboration with partners already playing significant role in the cultural sector. The Centre would open a friendly window to the world and contribute to other cultural institutions in Budapest. We would also give a space for countries, which have not opened cultural institutions in Hungary yet.

The characteristic of the place would be making the most of the role of intermediate German language and culture can play. The following organizations have indicated their willingness to cooperate: -

Swiss Embassy Budapest German Theater in Budapest German Embassy Goethe Institut Budapest Austrian Cultural Forum AndrĂĄssy University private persons

Further potential partners: -

Balassi Institut Petőfi Literary Museum Budapest Library of Foreign Languages theaters without residence

Thinking in terms of Central Europe, cultural values of other countries in the area cannot be missing from the palette: those that evolved in the territory of todays Romania, Slovakia, Poland, Serbia, Slovenia or Croatia.
