‘THE
LOCATION: PARK ROYAL, LONDON
THIS PROJECT IDENTIFIES THE CURRENT STATE OF REGENERATION HAPPENING IN PARK ROYAL, THE LARGEST BUSINESS PARK IN LONDON. ALIGNING WITH THIS REGENERATION SCHEME, I DESIGNED AN URBAN GREENING STRATEGY INCLUDING THE INTRODUCTION OF MORE SPECIES INTO THE BUSINESS-HEAVY DISTRICT.
THE ‘LUNG’ ACTS AS A HUB FOR ALL OF THE DECISIONS AND ACTIONS TO AID THE ENHANCEMENT OF BIODIVERSITY CITY-WIDE. WITH A FOCUS ON RESEARCH INTO POLLUTION ISSUES IN THE CITY, THE STRATEGY WORKS TO MAKE AND INSPIRE GREEN ADDITIONS TO THE CITY TO ABSORB THE CO2 EMISSIONS. THE WAREHOUSE/ CONTROL BUILDING ACTS AS A HUB TO HELP SOLVE A MAJOR PROBLEM RATHER THAN HAVING A MAIN FOCUS ON CREATING AN EXPERIENCE FOR ITS VISITORS
the building to come together and forces everyone to get involved with the factory process and the new biodiversity of the site.
- Starting at the exterior of the building, you are met with a ‘bug hotel’ exterior which houses many di erent vectors and also works as a green barrier from the nearby tra c at ground level. In this wall there are di erent shaped spaces for birds and bees to live but also feed.
- As you walk into the warehouse, on your right there is a glass wall separating you from the landscaping which will take you to the roof. e reception room that you are in is insulated and there is a door to the open air mound at ground level.
- When you are in the reception room, straight ahead of you is a staircase leading to the rst oor where you will nd meeting rooms of di erent sizes that look over what is happening below.
- On your le is the cutting and sizing room, across the hallway is the construction and testing room where green infrastructure is being made.
- In the cafe/kitchen area you can look over the cutting section of the factory below. is room is insulated and so is the factory space. is cafe/kitchen is only for companies unsing the meeting rooms and is not open to the public.
- Once on the roof, you are met with a hilly landscape, t with benches to sit and roo ights to see inside the building. Beehives and trees are also on the roof to create habitats for the various vectors.
EACH SPACE IN THE BUILDING WAS DESIGNED WITH A CERTAIN JOURNEY IN MIND. THE MAIN JOURNEYS ARE:
- LOCAL WORKERS USING THE ROOF PUBLIC SPACE AS A RESTING SPACE ALONGSIDE NATURE
- PARK ROYAL COUNCIL MEETING IN THE ROOMS ON THE SECOND FLOOR
- MATERIALS ENTERING THE BUILDING AND EXITING AS PART OF A GREEN WALL OR ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENT
TRANSFERRING POLLEN
- THE NATURAL STAKEHOLDERS TRAVELLING TO AND FROM THE BUILDING
BY RESEARCHING T HE SCOPE THAT THE MOST COMMON BUGS IN THE AREA TRAVEL TO, I DESIGNED THE EXTERIOR WALL TO HOUSE THEM AND ACT AS A NEW BASE TO LIVE IN. DUE TO THE CREATION AND DISPERSION OF THE GREEN ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS FROM THE LUNG A CONTROL OF POLLINATION COULD BE IMPLEMENTED INTO PARK ROYAL.

Beekeeping in cities has proven to increase pollination of plants and enhance the greenery in a space, however in some places there are too many bees as they have to compete for plants and pollen. Having too many of thes situated around a city could be problematic but they are needed to speed up the greening process.

LOCATION: BLACKPOOL NORTH PIER, BLACKPOOL, UK
ACKNOWLEDGING THE CURRENT GLOBAL PALM OIL CRISIS, BLACKPOOL IS AMONG THE MANY COASTAL TOWNS ON THE WEST SHORE OF ENGLAND THAT EXPERIENCES PALM OIL WASH UP ON THEIR BEACHES. THIS IS AS A RESULT OF THE BUSY SHIPPING CORIDOR IN BETWEEN IRELAND AND WESTERN ENGLAND, ALONG WITH THE INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING LAWS STATING THAT CARGO SHIPS ARE LEGALLY ALLOWED TO WASH PALM AND OTHER OILS INTO THE SEA WHEN 22+KM AWAY FROM THE SHORELINE. BY PROVIDING PALM OIL SOAP MAKING WORKSHOPS FOR CHILDREN IN THE LOCAL AREA AND PUBLISHING A WEEKLY NAME-ANDSHAME FOR COMPANIES WHO DO NOT USE SUSTAINABLY PRODUCED PALM OIL IN THEIR PRODUCTS, THE BARNACLE WORKS TO RAISE AWARENESS OF THE WIDER GLOBAL ISSUE.
