LAYERS Client: Javier Gutierrez

- ENTHUSIASTIC - TRADITIONAL - PASSIONATE - CREATIVE 63 years of age and from Oaxaca, Mexico, Javier Gutierrez weaves traditional Zapotec rugs and travels the world exhibiting and teaching others his craft. He has an intimate connection to the natural world. Along with his rugs, Javier loves to collect porcelain horses that he loves to display. While weaving his rugs, he likes to blare to his large collection of Mexican corridos early in the morning. One day, he dreams of returning back home to Oaxaca, Mexico. “Dreams, dreams,” he says.

THE PLAN SECTION CUT

The getaway extensions added to the home of Javier Gutierrez consist of three newly added rooms. The placement of the home is carefully chosen. With the back of the house facing north, Javier’s studio has the best-filtered light for working in his studio.

The outdoor rooms are also placed to where they will not receive harsh sunlight. The first is an outdoor Oaxaca themed room. The colorful nature and traditional furniture will bring this vision to life. It offers two fully outdoor extensions that are a porch and a patio. Moving further into the getaway is a sensory transition room. The floor, light, and feel of the room are all working together to let the traveler know they are moving towards something special. Finally, the furthest from the house is Javier’s studio. A large room full of glass that is secluded from the rest of the house allows him to feel his connection to nature and work in his favorite conditions.

A space made for creativity. Javier’s studio is an open room filled with materials that will spark creativity while keeping it masculine. He likes to surround himself with the colors of his culture and rugs. The predominant and most important color is deep red which is why his furniture resembles the colors. The mural landscape abstract artwork will be placed behind his desk while the colorful rug will lay under the looms. The one full wall of his studio is a sacred wall meant for his rugs to be hanged and for him and visitors to step back and be able to admire them.

Javier’s built-in storage is made to hold all his weaving supplies and any trinkets he may have from traveling the world. The studio is lit by natural light with the optional overhead canned and cove lighting. The transparency of the room allows him to feel his connection to nature which is extremely important to him while weaving.
