The first people in Algarve were traders and Estate stewards that established their colonies on the coasts. Good examples were the Phoenicians and the Carthaginians that existed for a long time solely from the resources of the coast.

After many battles, Algarve was reclaimed by the Christians. Since 1249, and until the Republic proclamation, the Portuguese monarchs were entitled "King of Portugal and of the Algarve".

The algarvios (people from the Algarve) were an important part of the maritime adventures and of the African territory occupation. The 1755 earthquake, which had its epicenter very close to Lagos, destroyed much of the Algarve. The tremors of destruction were felt everywhere and many important monuments were lost. But not even this would stop the algarvios, who despite all the adversities rebuilt the Algarve and made it what it is today: a wonderful resort by the sea!

CLIMATE In Algarve you have the best weather conditions in Europe. Characterized by scarce periods of precipitation, generally concentrated between November and March, and by a high insolation, the Algarve region presents excellent meteorological conditions for walks, sunbathes, outdoor activities or stunning rides.

During the summer the temperatures are very high, offering wonderful conditions to sunbath. The temperatures are around 30 degrees Celsius in the summer period.

Due to its relief and geographic position, Algarve receives many climatic influences from the North of Africa, from the Atlantic Ocean and from the Mediterranean Sea. The maximum temperatures oscillate, during the year, between 15 and 31 degrees Celsius, with no negative minimum temperatures in winter, a season in which the sunny days are a major and unexpected aspect.

he currency used in Portugal is the Euro, as in most other countries of the European Union (Spain, France, Luxembourg, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Belgium, Holland, Finland, Austria and Greece). One of the advantages of having a single currency is that you do not have to change any money because you can use the Euro in all of these countries.

There are eight coins: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents and 1 and 2 Euros. All coins have one side that is common to all twelve countries, whilst the other side differs from country to country.

The Euro is divided into 100 cents.

In Portugal, the national side of the Euro coins displays the royal seal of Dom Afonso Henriques.

Banknotes There are seven banknotes. The front and back of each note is the same for all twelve participating countries: 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 Euros.

The seven periods of European architectural history are represented on the banknotes. The bridges symbolise the dynamics of cooperation and communication, whilst the gateways symbolise the European spirit of openness.

Each banknote has a dominant colour for easy identification.

The larger the banknote's value the greater its size.

Credit and debit cards Most Portuguese shops and businesses accept credit cards: Visa, Amex, Eurocard, Euro-Cheque, Diners Club and MasterCard. There are a lot of cash machines all over the country. These cash machines are identified with the "MB" abbreviation.

In Algarve there are many traditional markets where you can find the most characteristic items at very affordable prices. There we can find clothes, food, fruit, grocery, arts and crafts and very colourful and musical birds. In Faro and Olhão there are markets all Saturdays morning. In Estoi the market takes place in the first Sunday all months. In Quarteira, there are markets every Wednesdays and in Almancil and Albufeira there are also interesting markets.

Festivals in Algarve Festivals: Some festivals

XIV Silves Medieval Fair The fifteenth edition of the medieval fair of Silves will take place between August 12th and 20th, in the historical center of Silves city.

It offers 10 days of historical recreation of the medieval period of the ancient capital of the kingdom of Algarve.

Dancing, music and poetry are entertainment events of this festival.

Between 6pm and 1am visitors are offered spectacular opportunities to experience unique adventures, memorable experiences that will make them return many more times.

Two tournaments on horseback per day, exclusive animation in the Castle of Silves, medieval delicacies, dancing and fun, will take visitors on a real journey in time, where you will be able to have a vision of what the city once was and its importance in the history of the region.

The Municipality of Silves, organizer of the event, maintains its commitment to this national reference event, which promises to be one of the most attractive proposals of animation of the regions.

White Party This is a festival "of a transdisciplinary nature dedicated to the promotion and diffusion of contemporary national and international art in Algarve," said the organization.

Its eighth edition materializes and reinforces the BarlaventoSotavento axis and presents an expanded programming design in each of the cities and a great diversification of spaces.

With a national and international program in the performative arts, music, cinema and visual arts, and in association and partnership with entities, structures and institutions, the aim is to strengthen the positioning of Algarve as a pole of diffusion and artistic creation and affirm these cities, and the region as places of contemporaneity.

Motorcycle club of Faro It offers the opportunity to socialize and have a great time watching the most emblematic motorcycles. There is a parade in July and the motards participate in social causes to help the community.

Alameda beer fest The beer fest known as the beer festival is a festival dedicated to the consumption of beer, although in general it also includes shows and other events.

The best known example is the Oktoberfest, Munich, Germany, but there are beer festivals in many countries of the world, often without any German culture.

Chocolate Fair It is an event that aims to energize this emblematic place of the city, and attract the world's most opulent.

Being a public success since its first year, the Chocolate Fair once again has exhibitors with food products that are true delicacies and where chocolate is the main ingredient of the most elaborated cakes, the candies , being cascades, fondues, ginjinha, hot drinks or some innovative creations.

There we will find local, regional and national producers, who come to LoulĂŠ to show the best things done in this country with chocolate, using traditional products and techniques.

White Night The sunset marks the beginning of the longest party in LoulĂŠ. It takes place in August. The city is closed to traffic and receives several free entrance shows throughout the night. The only requirement is to take a piece of white clothing. The whole city is in celebration and even the shops are open until later. There are jugglers, fire shows or gymnastics happening at everything that is site. The goal is to be amazed at all the performances that happen.

The center of the White Night is the stage set up on Avenida 25 de Abril, next to the Monument to Engineer Duarte Pacheco.
