The Belize Times has been very reliably informed that the catastrophic emptiness of the Civic Center over the weekend when Patrick Faber officially launched his campaign for leadership of the UDP was the result of a ‘hit’ by Prime Minister Dean Barrow. Barrow, we are told, flexed the little remaining muscle at his disposal

and called very big people in the UDP to instruct them that they were not to attend, and not to show any support for Faber.

Faber, who hasn’t been on the PM’s list of select acolytes for some time now, earned the PM’s wrath after he very publicly spoke out against a Cabinet decision to write-off $40,000 owed by the son of Cabinet Secretary

Carlos Perdomo. The incredibly outrageous and corrupt move by Cabinet caused and is still causing a massive outcry in the country, with the unions jumping on board to condemn it as scandalous nepotism. Faber, trying to play good politician, decided to condemn it too, conveniently forgetting that he is bound by the rules of Cabinet. He’s not allowed to go against a

The United Democratic Party is done, done done! Just look at the choices for leader. On one hand you have Patrick Faber, who in three terms has not done one thing to distinguish himself in office. If you take any random five Belizeans and ask them what they know about Patrick Faber, four of them will tell you about his fancy SUV that turned submarine and ended up in the Caribbean Sea. Faber has done nothing to help the Belizean people. He has done nothing to provide a better education or educational opportunities to poor Belizeans. As a man, it’s no secret that he has gained a name for beating up women while under the influence. That is public information, in black and white. And as a politician, he is no better.

Take another five random Belizeans and ask them about Faber’s opponent for leader, and four of the five will tell you that they remember John Saldivar because of his extremely cozy relationship with accused killer William Danny Mason. Saldivar was a regular at Mason’s home, was his business partner, and even used to accompany him on trips. That is what Saldivar is known for.

Think about it. Under Saldivar, Belize recorded the highest amount of murders ever – 145. Every single year, it seems to be getting worse.

The UDP is dead in the water. Everybody knows it. Word to the Belize Times is that the Prime Minister has been desperately trying to convince Mark Espat to step in, since it was proven that AG Mike Peyrefitte did not have the stamina, the longevity or the ability to compete seriously in electoral politics. Espat had allegedly been approached before, and it nearly led to mutiny in Cabinet, but now the Prime Minister sees the writing on the wall.

He knows the end is near, and there is no light at the end of the tunnel. Will Espat step in to save the UDP? If we were gamblers, we’d put every cent we have on the certain bet that the UDP is done. The fat lady is in the building and is ready to sing. We just wish they wouldn’t drag this out so long. The people have already suffered enough.

IT COULD HAPPEN TO US We have all seen the “generational devastation” of the Bahamas by Category 5 Dorian which savagely ravaged the island with all of nature’s fury. Videos of crying Bahamians most likely broke our hearts making us recall our Category 1 storms Earl and Richard. Today we can say Bahamas as was known is no more. Their infrastructure has been pummelled.

Their spirit most likely has been devastated but am sure not destroyed. The Bahamas is already receiving the support from the world. Well wishes go a longer way when accompanied by food and clothing and medicine and, in the case of the USA, and helicopters. Twenty plus have died and they expect to find more.

This is definitely one that we shouldn’t play politics with. We at the Belize Times wish to ask all Belizeans to watch closely the Bahamian example and think ‘that could have been us.”

CONNIVES AGAINST COMMUTERS In an attempt at a lesson, Edmond Castro uttered to Belize that the world spun slowly. His analogy was in defence of why the Ministry of Transport couldn’t find a quick solution to the most recent Bus Owners Association bluff. The bus owners are at odds that foreign buses from Mexico and Guatemala can come all the way into Belize when the reciprocal cannot happen especially with Guatemala, the country that has literally taken us to court for our Belizean Land.

The latter sound patriotic and it is easy to jump on the Bus Owners bandwagon of solidarity. But there is more. The bus owners claim that passengers are being transported from points within the country.

They requested that passengers be relieved of their human rights of leaving the bus. Passengers sometimes get up and request to alight the bus whenever they wish, within reason.

If I, a Belizean, am at this dirty terminal filled with Kiosks owned by foreigners selling to Belizeans why should I be restricted from boarding the nice air conditioned comfort of any bus at the terminal?

There is no obvious ticket system in Belize so it is consistent. As long as I pay the price and alight the bus I should be within my rights. Telling me which bus I should get into are dark shades of discrimination seen in movies with a Rosa Parks character.

A month ago, there was a preliminary agreement between the government and the bus owners again sans the actual passengers and commuters. Now, the bus owners seeing no change returned to their stance of NO REGARD for the commuters for some national

shutdown. They have had only lousy medieval buses made ages ago and should not even meet licensing standards. They are happy to place normal Belizeans on hard chairs designed for school children on short rides. In the USA, when these are not road worthy they are sold to Belize for our commuters. Sad! It was clear in post-meeting interviews that bus owners were looking to make money. That is their right. It is clear that they cared for the tourist dollar and providing buses for them.

That is fine.

It is super clear that Clear the Land knows NOTHING about running a transportation system designed to please Belizeans. When he was voted in, there was a hope that he would help Belizean lives not foreigners, not foreign bus owners, not only local bus owners, and definitely not himself.

That is definitely NOT fine. The total system and especially the passengers are at odds.

After Airport Authority checks, Immigration misbehaviour, Village Council rule-breaking, Taiwan rumours, Cycle raise handout and others, Castro can only be deemed at crass and incompetent.

The ‘new’ agreement does not ring as new. Some manifest is supposed to stop Belizeans from using these buses travelling on Belizean soil. What is wrong here is that Belizeans are relegated to horrible buses and horrible leaders. Their time has ticked off so long ago.

EFFORTLESS RIDE

he Ministry of Transport is often considered one of the less significant in terms of importance to the economic growth and development of our beautiful Belize. It is only when the Minister and his brood, infamous for their highly suspicious performance in cycling races or their several notorious run-ins with the Law, make headlines do we remember about the Minister of Transport. Were it not for immigration scandals, checks for unauthorized expenditures, or contraband beer, Belizeans may well have forgotten about Castro and his bunch. Bus operators though, had not been happy with a Minister whose only preoccupation is to clear the land for his cane fields, and has no involvement in a ministry plagued by inefficiency.

The problems at the Ministry of Transport go well beyond the systematic assignment of routes, which favour friends and party supporters. There is also the granting of routes to foreign companies with no previous consultation with national stakeholders. This was the latest in a string of grievances. The Ministry is quite like a rudderless ship cast to sea with no direction and no captain to steer it in the right course. At the Belize Times we pride ourselves in doing our part to educate, inform and provide solutions. Public transportation is essential to economic growth and productivity because it improves a business’ ability to provide goods and services. An efficient transport system improves accessibility to both education and employment because increased economic opportunities are directly related to the mobility of people.

Rodriguez and Nottleboom of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in a report titled “Country Infrastructure Briefs” in April 2019 stated that “When transport systems are deficient they have an economic cost such as reduced or missed opportunities and lower quality of life.” They also noted in their report that in sanitation, transport and telecommunication Belize presents a negative gap. The Transportation Master Plan for Belize (2018) also identifies a capacity weakness in public/private transport sector as well as deficiencies in road maintenance and lack of alternative routes in road networks. This last point has been highlighted by the World Bank in their 2016 report as it states that the road designs are not adequate for extreme weather events and roads are unsafe during flooding. The report continues to cite that Belize has on average more road traffic accidents than other Central American countries. These deficiencies in quality of roads and port facilities affect the growth of the most important driving forces of the economy, namely agribusiness and tourism.

Of particularly important note is that the World Economic Forum reports that Belize has not participated in any Global Competitiveness Report since 2011 when it earned a dismal 3.52 points out of a possible 100.

Development of a society means improving social, economic and political conditions. The results of development must be felt through qualitative improvements of human capital by advances in income, education and living conditions. Development must be seen in quantitative improvement of infrastructure of transport, utilities, and telecommunications. This is why highly connected networks are most commonly connected with high levels of development. Within this region we have only to look to Barbados that has invested heavily in its transportation and transformed its economy from one based on agriculture to an economy where tourism and off shore banking are its main industries. Similarly, industrialized countries around the world have excellent public transit systems because it reduces pollution, traffic congestion and increases efficiency while cutting down on costs. They have incorporated the use of technology by using reloadable cards to pay for service, this information is then used to plan, improve or add routes and services to the public.

Enrique Peñalosa Londoño said that “an advanced city is not a place where the poor move about in cars, rather it’s where even the rich use public transportation.” As Mayor of Bogotá he pioneered the construction of TransMillenio, the first Rapid Transit Bus system, which transports 2M people daily. There is much work to be done in the Ministry of Transport, but it requires hard work and effort. Belize cannot hope to capitalize on its ideal geographic location if it does not revamp its public transport system, and stream lines its logistics to make it easier and more cost effective to transport goods through our ports and borders.

Development will not come easily and with as little effort as it takes to catch a bicycle ride while hanging on to the back of a pick-up. Nation building is a task for hard workers, not for people used to an effortless ride!

Sólo cuando el ministro y su prole, tristemente célebres por su rendimiento altamente sospechoso en carreras de ciclismo y los varios y notorios encuentros con la ley acaparan los titulares, nos acordamos del Ministro de Transportes. Si no fuera por escándalos de inmigración, cheques por gastos no autorizados, ni cerveza en contrabando, los beliceños bien pudieron haberse olvidado de Castro y su pandilla. Los operadores de autobuses, aunque no han estado contentos con un ministro, cuya única preocupación es limpiar la tierra para sus campos de caña, y no tiene ninguna participación en un ministerio plagado de ineficiencia.

Los problemas del Ministerio de Transporte van mucho más allá de la asignación sistemática de rutas que favorecen a amigos y simpatizantes del partido. También se conceden rutas a empresas extranjeras sin consultar previamente a las partes interesadas nacionales. Esto fue la última de una serie de quejas. El Ministerio es como un barco sin timón lanzado al mar sin dirección y sin capitán para dirigirlo en la dirección correcta. En el Belize Times nos enorgullecemos de hacer nuestra parte para educar, informar y proporcionar soluciones. El transporte público es esencial para el crecimiento económico y la productividad porque mejora la capacidad de una empresa para proporcionar bienes y servicios. Un sistema de transporte eficiente mejora la accesibilidad, tanto a la educación como al empleo, ya que el aumento de las oportunidades económicas está directamente relacionado con la movilidad de las personas.

El informe sigue citando que Belice tiene en promedio más accidentes de tráfico que otros países centroamericanos. Estas deficiencias en la calidad de las carreteras y las instalaciones portuarias afectan al crecimiento de las fuerzas motrices más importantes de la economía, a saber, la agroindustria y el turismo.

De particular importancia es que el Foro Económico Mundial informa que Belice no ha participado en ningún Informe de Competitividad Global desde 2011 cuando obtuvo un triste 3,52 puntos de un posible 100. El desarrollo de una sociedad significa mejorar las condiciones sociales, económicas y políticas. Los resultados del desarrollo deben sentirse a través de mejoras cualitativas del capital humano mediante avances en los ingresos, la educación y las condiciones de vida. El desarrollo debe verse en la mejora cuantitativa de la infraestructura de transporte, servicios públicos y telecomunicaciones. Esta es la razón por la que las redes de comunicación altamente conectadas están más comúnmente conectadas con altos niveles de desarrollo. En esta región, sólo tenemos que mirar a Barbados que ha invertido fuertemente en su transporte y transformó su economía desde una basada en la agricultura a una economía donde el turismo y la banca off shore son sus principales industrias. Han incorporado el uso de la tecnología mediante el uso de tarjetas recargables para pagar el servicio, esta información se utiliza para planificar, mejorar o añadir rutas y servicios al público.

Enrique Peñalosa Londoño dijo que “una ciudad avanzada no es un lugar donde los pobres se mueven en los coches, sino que es donde incluso los ricos utilizan el transporte público”. Como alcalde de Bogotá fue pionero en la construcción del TransMillenio, el primer sistema de autobuses de tránsito rápido que transporta a 2 millones de personas diariamente. Hay mucho que hacer en el Ministerio de Transporte, pero requiere mucho trabajo y esfuerzo.

Belice no puede esperar capitalizar en su ubicación geográfica ideal si no renueva su sistema de transporte público, y racionaliza su logística para hacer más fácil y rentable el transporte de mercancías a través de nuestros puertos y fronteras. El desarrollo no se logrará fácilmente y no será tan fácil como tomar un paseo en bicicleta colgando de la parte posterior de un pick-up. La edificación de la nación es una tarea para los grandes trabajadores, no para aquellos que están acostumbrados a los trances de paseos sin esfuerzo.

Considering the devastating effects of hurricane Dorian on the Commonwealth of the Bahamas and the catastrophic damage caused, will the Prime Minister say if he has any confidence in his Minister of National Emergency Edmond Castro to lead this nation in the event that a serous hurricane should hit Belize?

Will the Prime Minister say if he agrees with this Transport and NEMO Minister Edmond Castro when he asserts publicly that the former Cuban President Fidel Castro or his brother Raul Castro are dictators and would the Prime Minister not agree that considering the great relations between Belize and Cuba that the statement by his Minister can harm our relations with Cuba?

Remarks for Wreath-Laying Ceremony Dr. Jane Usher 5 ½ Miles Northern Hwy. 5th September 2019 Delivered by Party Chairman on behalf of the Party Leader, We are here to today not to morn but to celebrate the life of Ms. Jane, after all had she been here with us there would be cake and laughter and Ms. Jane would have that happy twinkle in her eyes.

Whether you are here in appreciation of Ms. Jane the advocate for the credit union movement or you are here with the United Women’s Group to show appreciation for her work as one of our Party’s most influential women leaders, you are here to celebrate success.

See the sum total of Ms. Jane’s contribution as one of the pioneers of the credit union movement in Belize and as a politician is that she excelled in both and accomplished a lot at both.

As the president of HRCU she grew that organization to become one of the largest credit unions not only in Belize but in the region. Because of this she made it possible for many ordinary Belizeans to own their own home or to improve their lives. She thought so many how to save and how to manage money.

When it comes to her other body of work, her political contribution, Ms. Jane is matched only by a few.

Side by Side with her Brother George, they worked to build the PUP from a grass roots movement into Belize’s biggest political institution and in so doing, leaving a legacy that is today unmatched.

Ms. Jane worked with the women of the PUP not only as their presided, but she joined with others and fought for issues like better education, the protection of our children and decent housing.

As a minister of Housing she made sure that the leaders of our Party appreciated that women were the corner stone upon which Belizean families are built and as such women were just as entitled to affordable housing benefits as men.

Each time she was called upon to serve, Ms. Jane served, and each time she served with distinction and each task was completed with success.

And this is why we are here today, not just to celebrate her more than 100 years of life on earth, but so that we never forget how extraordinary Ms. Jane was.

She is one of our truest examples of a formidable woman and more so a true example of a Belizean Hero Ms. Jane is with the angels in paradise but her legacy lives on and for this we will always be grateful and for this we should always celebrate.

Party Leader’s Weekly Message Friday, 6th September 2019 Happy St. George’s Caye Day Hi Everybody. Andy Palacio once sang, it’s celebration time and the sounds and colours of the September Celebrations can be heard on our radio stations and seen in our cities, towns and villages.

In September, our many cultures merge and create a fusion that gives the best sampling of our Belizean identity.

I love the celebrations, of course I am aware that it is a time when we gather in crowds everywhere.

Please be careful and considerate.

Drink and celebrate in moderation and let’s keep one eye on the festivities and the other on the weather.

Remember, we are still in the hurricane season and the peak time at that.

Also, take a moment to do something to help our friends in the Bahamas.

Hurricane Dorian caused death, massive loss and destruction and our hearts go out to the good people of the Bahamas.

If you can, please give to the Red Cross fundraising drive for Hurricane Relief for the Bahamas. In your church groups or and other community groups who are organizing relief efforts for the Bahamas help out if and where you can.

In the coming days, I will speak to the Prime Minister and suggest other ways we can help the good people of the Bahamas.

We can and will work together on this because one day it could be our turn.

Hurricane Dorian On behalf of our Party Leader, and our entire PUP family, the Belize Times extends our sympathy for and empathy with all those who have suffered the wrath of the catastrophic Hurricane Dorian. We urge all Belizeans to assist in any way they can through the Belize Red Cross and urge the scurvy Barrow administration to take their hands out public coffers and to offer a helping hand to those in need. Today, our brothers and sisters in the Bahamas are suffering. Tomorrow it could be us.

BTL Retrenchment The phone company which Mr. Barrow says belongs to Belizeans, and is owned by us, is ‘celebrating’ ten years of nationalization, red and white balloons and fireworks and lots of giveaways and all. Just ignore the fact that since the nationalization, the only people who have gotten filthy rich are those connected to or related to the Prime Minister. That’s not important. And as we jump up and celebrate ten years of nationalization, maybe the UDP wants us to also ignore credible reports that BTL will be retrenching as many as 150 employees of the company. You heard us right – 150 employees let go, allegedly at the end of September. How’s about that for a celebration? Remember that you heard it here first. BTL has done nothing for the Belizean people but place a debt around our necks that our children and our children’s children will have to pay. Mr. Barrow may think that as his political career comes to an undignified close, he’s gotten away scot free. But he will pay dearly for what has been done at BTL. Poor Patsy We are told that the man who would be king, that petulant man-boy otherwise known as Patrick Faber, officially launched his campaign sometime recently. Nobody seems to know exactly when or where it happened.

All we know is that porky pig from Belmopan is claiming that he has hosted boxer parties which had more people than Faber’s campaign launch. We wouldn’t know, because we never attended those boxer parties at Mason’s hilltop mansion. We’ve heard the names of quite a few who did attend, but we’d prefer not to talk about those kinds of activities right now. The point is that the man from Belmopan is claiming that the man-boy from Collet is a dead duck, after he was unable to muster more than a couple hundred people to attend his event. Faber, when asked about the poor showing, told reporters that they were only imagining things, and that thousands and thousands attended. Okay then. We figure Faber must have some of the rum he stashed from those good old Petrocaribe days, cause that fellow wasn’t in his right senses.

Morgue Mates We haven’t seen any copy of the UDP Guardian this week since we haven’t run out of toilet paper yet this week, but we’re told that there was a big picture showing two clowns – one named Pablo and one called Papa.

Apparently, they were posing in front of a morgue unit and they were being praised for improving lives (laugh) and the quality of health care – for fixing a morgue unit which was down for months. If you want the opinion of many, many Belizeans, Pablo and Papa should have just climbed inside the unit, closed the door and never come out again. We doubt many people would notice. Belizeans are more interested in finding out why a morgue unit which cost only around BZD$10,000 ended up costing taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars. That is the big question, and that’s the one that Pablo doesn’t want to answer. As for Papa, he’s probably just grateful for the photo op because he knows that it’s one of his last. Unless he’s posing for a mug shot in the not so distant future, and that’s a distinct possibility.

Stupid man Today, in Belize, we celebrate a long-standing relationship with Cuba.

We enjoy the assistance of Cuban medical staff, and programs which have resulted in Belizeans having access to quality education in Cuba, free of cost. As we prepare to celebrate our Independence, we note that on the road to Independence Cuba stood strong with us, shoulder to shoulder.

We could go on, because the friendship between our countries is that strong. Which is why we wondered why UDP Minister Edmond Castro deliberately insulted the deceased former president of Cuba, Fidel Castro Ruz, by disparagingly referring to him as a dictator during an interview. According to Edmond, he believes in consultation, because he would never want to be a dictator like Fidel Castro. We are not sure what history books Castro – the stupid one – is reading, but we believe that he owes the people of Cuba an apology. And we note, also, that the local Castro could never compare himself to Fidel Castro. Never. Not in a million years.

September is upon us and with that comes quite a bit of party activities. Please note the following dates and deadlines for submission of names, delegates and planned activities.

1. September 19: National Service Day along with the Official Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Grave Site of Rt. Hon. George Cadle Price. All 31 divisions and PUP Elected Village Councils are being asked to submit to Ms. Nestora Trapp at email Address: nestoranyra21@gmail.com no later than September 16, 2019 for your division and village plan for Service Day. The Secretariat will be sending out a calendar of events for that day so that we will know what is taking place in all our divisions and villages that are led by the PUP. 2. September 28: National Party Council. This year’s National Party Council will be grand. All our elected Village Chairpersons and Councillors and those who ran independent but caucus with us will receive a special invitation to be a part of the Party Council which also commemorates the 69th Birthday of the Great PUP. All 31 divisions are asked to submit on or before September 25: a. The names of their 7 delegates b. The Name of the Individual (Posthumous) is accepted who is designated to receive the George Price Service Award.

It is a great month to pray our Belizean prayer, which begins, “Almighty and Eternal God, who through Jesus Christ has revealed Your Glory to all nations, please protect and preserve Belize, our beloved country….” It is also an opportune time to examine our national conscience and ask if we are fulfilling our national destiny to glorify God while reflecting on this year’s theme, “From Maya Grandeur to Modern Glory, Together Let’s Shape the Belizean Story.”

The poetic phrase encourages Belizeans to tell and remember the story of the nation this September. This is an incredibly important task since from our national memory comes a national identity, and the strength to shape its story. Storytelling is an art that requires wisdom and creativity. Wisdom is necessary since the story must embody the truth, and communicate this eternal truth to the next generation that often shares new experiences and ideals. Lords Bank, September 1, 2019 The Belize Defence Force cricket club walloped the Flowers Bank Wicked Eleven: 229 to 211 runs to win the 2019 Harrison Parks cricket championship finals Game 3 in the Lords Bank oval on Sunday morning.

Man of the Match Steven Flowers led the BDF attack hitting 2 sixes and 6 fours to score 50 runs, Jervis Wade hit 3 sixes and 2 fours to score 35 runs, and Jerry Cassasola hit 2 sixes and 3 fours to score 32 runs. T’shaka Patterson hit 5 fours to score 32 runs, Travis Stephenson hit 3 fours to score 21 runs, Herman Gordon hit 2 fours to score 17 runs, and Alexander Reynolds scored 15 runs.

Senate Hearings Soundbites August 30, 2019 Michel Chebat

This definitive agreement does nothing to improve the lives of the Belizean public.

The Belizeans who are left holding the bag for the incompetence of this government.

This legislation is discriminatory because it is aimed at big landowners.

It is inescapable that we are one year or less from an election and it is, I give you right now and down the road you give me back.

Let us rationalize, and let us look at the people that most need the remission of taxes. Let us look at the people in the productive sector who have been suffering under this drought. Let’s us make it real Let us not continue to award delinquent behaviour.

If you wish we can use the analogy of the bodybuilder who focuses only on a bicep when all the rest of the muscles are weak.

It is not a balanced approach when so much is place on one sector. This is like Belize’s infrastructure.

An infrastructure led policy is an import led policy because of all that is needed—machinery, fuels and the parts…. Our deficit was 900 million dollars and now it is 1.6 million dollars in 2018.

In Education had a subvention of 1 Million Dollars from seven. The enrolment has doubled and it is still 10 million dollars.

We should have gone the way of our friends in Taiwan. Their policy promoted the development of their human resources. And now they are in a position of being one of the countries in the world with the largest foreign reserves. They did things right. And here we are being a beggar nation. Why haven’t we learned from that? We don’t focus on our productivity of our own people.

I know there is the argument that we need the roads for tourism. Placencia, people fly there. The argument that investment in infrastructure causes development in Tourism is fallacious and it is the one-bicep approach. Our tourism has grown because of what God has given and the Mayas.

A CONVENTION FULL OF GOOFS Patrick Faber just hosted a world class yawner of an endorsement convention. Without surprise, the Collet constituency was ignored for most of the night. One would think that a vying leader of a country could at least fill the Civic Center with the constituents of his area. But no! The Civic was an echoing room with more seats than attendants. The programme was fit for the attendance—empty.

The UDP is done! And they seem to be in clinical-level denial.

Faber’s THANK YOU directed at Dean Barrow was a not so subtle version of ‘Get Lost, You are in my Way.’ Incidentally, Barrow’s presence was humongous due to his absence at this convention.

The budget that must have been spent for this convention is rude and comes at a time when parents are struggling to pay their school fees.

In Ladyville, a primary school turned back over 200 students since their fees had not been paid at the end of the past year. Couple that with the Perdomo write-off for a scholarship and this convention is definitely at the wrong time. But, given the personality, there is actually no right time.

This person that Faith built is not even qualified to be a teacher today under his dictated 2012 Education Rules. Even the aspiration of being the leader of a political party in Belize is way above Faber’s league.

Listening to his speech is painful. After years of the same squeak job he tends to utter, Faber was at his worst. He delivered a monstrosity and dared to call a speech. His speech writer should be finding another job.

And if Faber wrote it himself, the UDP is done! Any which way, they are done.

A leaderless UDP and Faber are egging Dean Barrow unto pasture but at the same time, they are shivering at the thought of an election. Faber and gang are afraid that there are more Perdomo/land tax thingies hurled out. These UDP seemingly daily shenanigans and keep adding more nails into the UDP coffin. They are DONE. Make no mistake, the People’s United Party is re-energized, poised and recommitted to govern and to deliver to the Belizean People the rights that have been denied these endless eleven years. PUP being ready to lead is more than a mantra and it is more than a promise, it’s a God-driven plan that John Briceño will unfurl after the PUP historic win. The People are ready.

Although we receive absolutely no funds from the government to assist the community, our annual Back to School Program in the Port Loyola Division was a tremendous success.

Aware that education is the key to a better life, over the weekend, we assisted over 200 deserving students with school bags, composition books or exercise books.

Sincere thanks is extended to all those persons and businesses who assisted us in anyway to make this year’s back to school program a successful event.

He is already looking forward to Caye Caulker where he will be making a donation directly to the school. It must be noted that he is doing work in a division that has been loaded with broken promises made by a Minister and Representative who has been busy trying to transfer votes from fellow UDP representative’s constituencies from the mainland.

Reportedly, this same Minister recently walked into an immigration office for passports, everyone else was excused as he jumped to the front of line. Minister Heredia was once questioned at a Senate inquiry about using his influence to fast-track processes at the immigration office. Of course, he denied any wrong doing.

By Wilfrido Novelo, Member NMAB The Battle of Orange Walk Monument situated on Queen Victoria Avenue in Orange Walk Town was the venue of an inspirational moment in the town’s history with the celebration of the Third Edition of Maya Heroes Day this past Saturday August 31st 2019. The battle actually occurred on September 1st 1872 between the forces of Icaiche Maya Chief Marcos Canul and the British West India Regiment stationed in Orange Walk. The event was organized by the Northern Maya Association of Belize (NMAB).

The NMAB is a registered non-profit Non-Government Organization that was formed to preserve and promote Maya history and culture in northern Belize, a culture that was silently withering away.

The NMAB is made of Belizeans from the Orange Walk and Corozal districts.

The official ceremonies began with the beautiful rendering of our national anthem by the “Juul K’iin (“Rays of the Sun”) Children’s Group of Yo Creek Village, first Maya Escort Group of the Belizean flag, which was done in the Maya language, under the directorship of Mrs Felicita Cantun. All commands were done in the Maya language and the children respectfully responded.

The NMAB recognized two outstanding Maya Belizeans for their positive contributions to Maya culture. They were Mrs Silvina Perez of Nuevo San Jose Palmar Village and Don Octaviano Pott of Caledonia Village. Mrs Silvina Perez has been dedicated to traditional Maya healing, a great promoter of the Fiesta de San Jose in Palmar, the village’s patron saint that is held yearly in Palmar on the week of March 19th. She also facilitates anyone interested in using Maya regalia for any cultural occasion.

Recognition awards were presented by Mayor Kevin Bernard, Liaison for Museum of Belize and Houses of Culture Mrs. Carla Rosado, President of the NMAB Ms Yahaira Vega and Vice President of the NMAB Arturo Cantun.

Don Octaviano Pott has been instrumental in promoting the Juan Carnaval festivities that begins on the Sunday and ends on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. His involvement began as a young boy when his uncle was the accordionist for the carnival and his dream was to one day play the accordion at said festivities, a dream he fulfilled in later life. One upon a time, in the 1960s and 1970s, carnival was a big thing in the calendar when boys went out on the streets to paint with talcum powder any girls on the streets. That no longer happens anymore. The NMAB has begun a process of reviving the carnival with the “comparsas” (dance groups) that once upon a time celebrated carnival with all sorts of revelry in Orange Walk. Elderly folks of Orange Walk say they yearn for the return of days of old.

The ceremonies ended with the laying of the wreath at the monument by Senator Osmany Salas, and Member of the NMAB Cindey Rivero. The day’s activities continued at the nearby Central Park.

POK-TA-POK

After more than 1,000 years after the collapse of Maya civilization, the ancient Maya ballgame known as pokta-pok is seeing a revival. In 2015, Mrs. Felicita Cantun organized the first ever in Belize pok-ta-pok team named Ek Balam (Black Jaguars). In September that year the team participated in the first ever Pok-ta-pok Mundo Maya World Cup in Chichen Itza, Yucatan, Mexico. Mexico won first and second places while Belize won third after beating Guatemala two times.

In 2017, Ek Balam won first place at the Mundo Maya World Cup in Guatemala and in 2019 they repeated as world champs in El Salvador. The MM World Cup is held in a different MM country every two years and it will be on a rotating basis. Honduras will host 2021 and Belize’s turn will be in 2023. In 2025 it goes back to Mexico.

The grand attraction of Saturday’s Maya Heroes Day was a first for Belize:

a real pok-ta-pok competition with Orange Walk’s females, “Le Ts’unu’um” (The Hummingbirds) of Yo Creek village versus “l’Binkaan” (Coral Snakes), female students of the Belize High School of Agriculture. It was a fiercely contested match with five players on either side playing under 90 degrees-plus under the scorching sun at Orange Walk’s Central Park. The match ended 10 points for either side, with extra time being allowed.

The NMAB has adopted the above logo create by NMAB member Andy Chuc.

It consists of the Maya colours: white for the north, yellow for the south, red for the east and black for the west. A male and female

2019 Maya are represented in brown colour, the original complexion of the Maya that we see painted on bark paper books, in murals of royal palaces, inside of royal tombs and on ceramics.

Each Maya holds a corn, the basic staple of the Maya. According to the Popol Vuh, the Sacred Book of Counsel of the Maya, the Maya gods tried to create humans three times. In the first creation they tried to create humans out of wood but that did not work because they could not bend and they had no feelings. In the second creation, they tried to create humans out of clay but that did not work because when it rained on them they disintegrated and washed away. In the third creation the Maya gods tried to create humans out of the kernel of the corn and that did work, so that the Maya consider themselves to be children of corn. Corn is very important in the Maya diet; corn is very sacred in Maya culture.

The machetes are symbols of Maya resistance and they are also tools of work with which the Maya work the land to produce food for their sustenance. (The machete has cut million upon millions of tons of cane in northern Belize during the past 52 years of the sugar industry). Dear Editor, Noticed during travelling: We have had poor engineering practices for years. Full of ignorance and lack of intuition, where some emphasis is placed on aesthetics and almost zero on functionality. This has been so for decades which put in doubt the source of the knowledge of our engineering companies. Which university they went to? If they have any university education because not even their common sense is perceived?

A low lying area like Belize City, for example, instead of the canals be narrowed, they should have been widen to drain the maximum amount of water, instead of roundabouts there should be overpasses, but when you travel the Hummingbird Highway you continue to see the same idiotic practice. They are replacing the narrow bridge is a mistake from the onset as if at no time our vehicular traffic would increase. In 2019, the same ‘idiotness’ continues which will only cause these new bridges to be completely washed away. Those bridges are not only for crossing bridges but also drainage.

So if it is drainage, the objective should be to maximize the flow of water and not the opposite. We see instead some low and narrow bridges in area with high debris which will only wash these bridges when high volume of water run down with high force from the surrounding hills. The actual bridges are there for decades. Even though, extremely narrow but they allowed the maximum flow of water underneath.

Do we have a Minister of Works? These bridges are now going to be replaced by structures of stupidity and the cost of the ideal bridge structure would have been far cheaper. Water is one of the most powerful element of nature.

It respects nothing. These “engineers” forgot what happened to the previous Kendall Bridge.

I have heard Mr. Hector Silva talk about it on Plus TV and then I saw it myself yesterday. I totally agree with him.

As a matter of fact, there wasn’t even the need for such earth movement on the Hummingbird. What was the objective? The justification of millions of dollars additional and squandered that has no technical reason but could later cause death? Cutting a hill that deep will definitely need terracing. Only a small portion is terraced. Hope terracing will be all along, otherwise landslides will be an issue in the future which could block completely the highway for hours. However, I insist there wasn’t any technical reason for such movement of earth material.

The phrase of style, even to dance, these days is climate resilience. Everything is about climate resilience and for sure we have to take it seriously, which we aren’t. See what happening with the Bahamas by Dorian. Here is just a matter of when but the time will come.

Yet there is no seawall from Bird Isle to Port may because of being poor people area. Did these geniuses in climate resilience see this work on the Hummingbird including the bridges? If they had and made no recommendation would be gross negligence and ignorance. If they haven’t, it is imperative and urgent that they do so.

NGCL’s LPG Project will, through an open tender, supply LPG delivered directly to Big Creek Port, eliminating expensive trucking and, for the first time, establishing a large domestic inventory of LPG. The direct delivery of LPG to Belize will reduce costs and increase the security of supply.

Sugar Factory Should Pay Millions The killing of a river is a monumental matter. When one human kills another human the penalty is long years in jail.

The sugar factory in Orange Walk, is from all indications, responsible for the killing of the New River. With the connivance of the Belize government and the silence of certain sectors of the media the Sugar Factory is getting away with murder. They have been dumping harmful chemicals, tons of hot water and toxic things into the mix.

In other countries they would have been held accountable. It would have cost them millions of dollars in penalties and cleanup costs. So why not in Belize?

We have to ask the question, do they contribute to the ruling party in order to get away with an unforgivable destruction to a river?

This is a serious matter. All living creatures in the New River around Orange Walk have been exterminated—from wiggle-waggle to alligator. If any human being dares to drink the water, they too will die. A slow painful agonizing death.

A primary school near the river has been forced to close because of the horrible smell now coming from the dead river.

It is not enough to say others dump things in the river. The major culprit is the sugar factory, lucky bastards; they are getting away with an environmental murder.

Girls Hostel Some two years ago three girls burned to death at the Girls Hostel at Rockville on the Western Road.

The horrible deaths were the result of negligence. The “jail cell” where the three girls were placed as punishment had the hasp and staple type of lock on the outside of the door. The padlock had only one key. During the mysterious fire the key could not be found. The three girls burned to death.

One was pregnant. Their screams could be heard from the roadside.

One of the mothers, who lived in Rockville Village manage to reach the Hostel on hearing of the fire, she could hear her daughter’s screams but was helpless to do anything.

Public outrage forced the government to hold an internal inquiry, chaired by a respected, retired Family Court Magistrate. Her report has never seen the light of day. Reportedly, on instructions from the Prime Minister the report has been covered up.

For the past several weeks, reports reaching the media and family members are of girls escaping the Hostel – over and over. Girls fighting the wardens. Girls destroying property. Girls climbing onto the pale building’s roof. Police being called to quell rebellion.

Obviously, some things are wrong at the institution. Knowing the level of incompetence so ripe in the government it is safe to say nothing will be done.

Two Ministers Open Dead House The morgue, commonly known as a dead house, in Dangriga, has not been in use for over a year. Last week TWO, not ONE, Ministers of government held a public ceremony to inaugurate the dead-house. The new dead house only provides for two bodies.

Ironically, two Honourable Ministers of the outgoing government turned up for the publicity stunt.

There is something in the Bible that says leave the dead to bury the dead.

Rasheed Pollard He was exactly 27 years of age.

Celebrating his birthday last Friday – with alcohol, this popular young man lost control of his vehicle and lost his life. He left behind two young chil-

dren. The moral of this unfortunate incident is don’t drink and drive.

Sandra Coye Sandra Coye is a blessing to Belizeans. She is a highly educated and patriotic warrior. An outspoken advocate capable of conversing on a wide array of issues.

Sandra is a rare jewel, the kind our country could do with more of.

How better off we are because of her. Large numbers of citizens look forward to hearing her call in to Krem radio and television in the mornings.

Her righteous indignation is like those of the prophets in the Bible.

Perhaps it is worth considering to ask if she could call-in at a specific time like 7:30 AM or whatever time is suitable to the majority of Krem listeners.

Belizean Cyclist Banned A Belizean cyclist has been banned from riding for the next four years because he failed a dope test by the international cycling body. We will call no name. It is increasingly clear that cyclists in Belize are using performance-drugs which are not legal in sports. This is a sad development for our sporting community.
