YAH DAH FUH WE BELIZE PUP CONDEMNS GOB FOR GUAT INCURSION Tuesday, 19 September 2017 The People’s United Party (PUP) has expressed its strongest condemnation of the actions of the GAF and has likewise called out the Government of Belize for its inaction following the blatant harassment of Belizeans within our territorial waters this weekend.

Less than a week before Belize’s Independence, the Guatemalan Armed Forces (GAF) used five metal sharks and similar military vessels to assert sovereignty at the Sarstoon. Over 70 Belizeans – men and women – had made the trip to the Sarstoon to participate in the 2nd Annual Sarstoon Eco Challenge but the Guatemalans did not allow one Belizean vessel to pass onto the island and the occupants of the others which did were harassed. The Guatemalans made it a point to trail them as they competed in canoes and kayaks well within Belizean territorial waters.

Continued from page 1 at the Belize Forward Operating Base who did nothing to stop the encroachment. The Guats, on the other hand, jumped into action as the Belizean vessels arrived at the mouth of the Sarstoon. According to eyewitnesses, they moved back and forth several times and those on the ground viewed this as an apparent attempt to intimidate the paddlers and those providing support in motor boats.

The Eco-Challenge is organized by the Belize Territorial Volunteers (BTV) to bring awareness to the illegal and unsustainable fishing in the Sarstoon/Barranco area. But on Saturday, other Belizeans observed the rank and blatant disrespect of the Guatemalans who enter Belize’s waters as they please without impunity.

The PUP has remarked that Guatemalans stationed at the Sarstoon have maintained operational control of the entire Sarstoon River, and the Government of Belize through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has committed a gross error in allowing this to happen.

Similar harassment has been exercised by the Guatemalan military personnel against SATIIM rangers going on routine patrols to the Sarstoon Temash National Park, and Belizean media.

The PUP calls on Prime Minister Dean Barrow and Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington to “ACT NOW to protect our territorial integrity. If they will not act, we call on them to tell the Belizean people how we lost the Sarstoon which we sing about in our National Anthem. As we prepare to celebrate our Independence, the people deserve to know the truth.”

Also strongly condemning Guatemala’s military encroachment into Belizean territory was the Belize Network of NGOs (BNN). BNN affirmed that “this act of belligerence by the GAF is unacceptable, and endangers the safety of Belizean citizens who have all the right to move freely within Belizean waters. The BNN is extremely concerned about this clear violation of our territorial integrity and sovereignty by the GAF.” They are therefore calling on the Government of Belize to immediately send a strong protest note to the Government of Guatemala, and to inform the world community and international organizations about these continued acts of aggression by the GAF at the Sarstoon.

WERE VIOLENT DEATHS A MURDER/ SUICIDE? Tuesday, 19 September 2017 A double tragedy in Belize City has shaken two families after Robert Godfrey, owner of the AAA Security Company was found dead inside his security firm, along with his employee, Delcie Smith. Initial investigation suggests that Godfrey shot her and then shot himself, but that has not been conclusively established as yet.

On Friday night, September 15, at around 8:30 p.m., the cops entered the AAA headquarters, located at 2 and a half him), Saldivar affirmed while referring to his personal use of Coast Guard vessels to ferry his Bandits players to games, “I have no apologies at all for using government resources to help the young people of this country, to help the communities in this country, to help sports of this country and if there are colleagues of mine who differ from that, I certainly do not revile from that belief because that is why I am in politics- to help my people."

Of course, he did not state during that interview that the only “people” he used government resources to help were members of his personal Belmopan Bandits sports club, in which he has a vested financial interest.

But back to Saldivar’s presence up North that day: it betrayed the true state of affairs within the United Democratic Party as those in the uppermost echelons manoeuvre around while waiting for the lame duck Prime Minister to fall by the wayside. It sent a strong message and was proof positive that the serious rift

miles on the Phillip Goldson Highway. On the lower flat, which is the office space, they found 50 year-old Delsie Olivia Smith with a gunshot wound to the head. Nearby, they found her employer, 66 year-old Robert Godfrey, with a gunshot wound to his head. They also found a .38 revolver, a weapon which they believe - but have not been able to determine yet - belongs to Godfrey.

The cops believe that at about an hour earlier, Godfrey took out the weapon he had on him and shot his employee in the head. It is suspected that he subsequently shot himself in the head and ended his own life afterwards.

When questioned about the details, Assistant Police Commissioner Joseph Myvette, the Head in the red party - rather than petering out, is actually intensifying and may soon irreparably divide the UDP. On Friday September 15th, Faber admitted that not all is necessarily well in the UDP while adding that it’s no secret that “many of us in the UDP…are not satisfied with some of what has happened, a lot of what has happened.

And, not to create any kind of disunity but we have always been a Party that boasts our integrity and our honesty, and where that is not found, I feel compelled to make sure that that is flushed out.”

All of a sudden, Faber is holier-than-thou. In answering a question about taking action against party members for their missteps, he said, “I am saying that it is an internal thing for our Party - although there is the government aspect - my fight is always with my Party to get things right.

And if there are people who don’t fit right with that kind of mentality, and that kind of seeing things then I oppose them being on the ticket indeed.”

We await to see how this one will play out.

2017 of the National Criminal Investigations Branch, was careful in the comments he made. He would not even confirm if Police are investigating this disturbing incident as a murder/ suicide. He was only prepared to say that it was a “death investigation.” When asked if Police know who inflicted the injuries, Myvette said, “I think at this point, based on the stage of the investigation, I do not want to answer that.”

Godfrey’s family has yet to grant any public comments following the tragedy, but speaking with press shortly after, Delsie Smith’s daughter, Tricia Hislop, said “everybody is surprised, everybody is shocked.”

Reports suggest that just before the shooting, the two were heard socializing as employee to employer. As the Manager of the company, Delsie Smith was working out the payroll and the work schedule for employees who would be on-duty for the weekend. That was a short time before the shooting happened.

Delcie Smith’s daughter says that Robert Godfrey, her mother’s boss, was a friend of their family, and it was completely unexpected that this tragedy happened. She also addressed rumours that have persisted over the weekend that the two were somehow romantically involved.

She asserted, “I need everybody to stop, you can't assume a relationship was there. She was the manager. He was the boss… We may never know because dead men tell no tales…we can't sit here and assume.

I know my mom so I know there was nothing there and I knew him. He was a family friend; he has been around 11 years. My mom was working with them 11 years, and he was there every time, every occasion everything, he bought us Christmas gifts, everything.

So we can't stand here and ridicule him."

GRENADE WARFARE IN LA ISLA BONITA Tuesday, 19 September 2017 A grenade was detonated on San Pedro over the weekend causing shockwaves on a massive scale to radiate all around the island. The noise of the blast could have been heard by residents living about a mile away from the location where it was thrown. The experts say that this is a first for the island town where an explosive has never been used before, like they have in other parts of the country, such as in Belize City.

That explosion happened on Saturday, September 16, at around 8:20 p.m. in the San Mateo area of the island. Home owner Amancia Martinez told Police that she was inside when she heard the grenade go off right outside her house, the impact causing it to shake. She went outside to see what had happened, and that’s when she saw the big hole under her steps.

Shortly after the explosion, Police in the area showed up to find out what had happened, and the local bomb expert, Brigadier General David Jones, was called in to inspect the scene for himself.

In a Police press conference held on Monday, September 18, he said that from his best knowledge, the type of grenade that was thrown into the yard was a US M67 fragmentation grenade. He told the nation, “I visited the area I saw the crater at the bottom of the steps and after inspection of what occurred, I realize definitely it was a high explosive fragmentation grenade… Some of the fragments went through the house that was about 15 meters away - it went through the bathroom. The houses in the adjacent area were all shaken. The other parts of the grenade that I am looking for haven't been found.”

Police say that they’ve detained 3 persons who are being investigated for this grenade attack, and reports to them are that 2 men were seen throwing something - presumably this grenade - into the Martinez family yard before running off.

It is very fortunate that in this instance the detonation of this grenade did not cause any injuries, or the worst case, any casualties. Describing the danger to human life that this

CITY VIOLENCE ESCALATES IN SEPTEMBER Tuesday, 19 September 2017 Over the weekend in Belize City, there was a series of other shootings, one of which claimed the life of a Belize City man and put several others in the hospital.

The murder victim is a 51 year-old Honduran, Santos Miguel Bernardez, and he was killed in a shooting on Saturday, September 16, sometime around 9:50 p.m. Police investigation says that he and other companions were socializing in a friend’s yard on Lara Dunn Street when a gunman entered the yard. That shooter opened fire on the group and ran off, and in the spray of gunshots Bernardez was injured in the left temple. He died right at the table where he was sitting.

Speaking with the press, his sister, Anastacia Oliva, said, “My niece she saw when they shoot her uncle…

So she ran and tell her mom that they shot her uncle and then they call me crying and tell me what was happening with my brother… He is not a troublemaker he's a hardworking man he is always on the street. He works with City Council, so he cleans the streets."

About 2 hours before that, the cops had to visit the KHMH where they found 30 year-old Scheffield Ysaguirre suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the stomach. He was riding his bike on Pitta Street when a gunman followed him and fired several shots at him, inflicting the injuries he suffered. He’s in a stable condition at the KHMH. Another victim recovering at the KHMH is city resident Aaron King, who was shot twice in the chest and

once in the shoulder. He and a group of people were at a birthday party in Buttonwood Bay when a shooter rode past on a bicycle along with another individual. King’s family says that he was standing beside his girlfriend and another friend when the gunman called out to him. He turned around, and that’s when the gunman shot him.

But the gunman did not escape because one of the party-goers was a licensed firearm holder. He took out of his weapon and shot the gunman who was trying to flee the scene of his attack. That assailant, who has since been identified as Moses Babb, was injured in the abdomen, and he was subdued long enough for Police to detain him and take him in for medical treatment.

King’s family says that while it is clear that he was the intended target, there is no explanation for it. He has reportedly spoken to his family about it, and he does not know why he was targeted. His family has already suffered terrible tragedies to gun violence already.

The final shooting happened on Sunday morning, but fortunately, the intended target was not injured. 51-year-old Joseph Ducey, a well-known Haitian-Belizean taxi-driver, was at his home on Police Street at around 11 o’clock when 2 assailants approached him in his yard. One of them pulled out a gun and fired a shot at him. He drew his own licensed weapon and fired back at them, scaring them off.

It would have caused serious casualties if anyone was within 15 meters. But this type of grenade can cause injuries up to about 230 meters away, because the secondary effect from that grenade is the fragments that comes from the body. It has the primary effect which was felt by the residence around there which is the shock wave from the explosives. That went out for a long distance away… These types of weapon are not supposed to be in the urban area, it's not to be in the hands of civilians. Grenades are designed for war time scenario.”

One of the residents from the yard were the explosion vented his frustration at the immediate police treatment of the situation. He claims that police came and “kicked down” their door, demanding answers and targeting them for harsh interrogation in a situation where they were the victim of the attack. This resident, who wished not

to be named, asserted that the island cops know who conducted this attack, but they are not doing anything about it. He said that his boat was confiscated by Police for no reason.

While that is a fact, this is the 4th explosive to have been brought to the attention of law enforcement for the month of September, and just last week there was the threat of a grenade being exploded at the St. Martin de Porres School in Belize City. While the Police claim they have it all under control, it is clear to all watching that the warfare in Belize has been ratcheted up a notch, and Police clearly have no clue on how to deal with the situation, except to pick up the pieces if or when another explosive is detonated.

PUP Condemns Guatemalan Aggression & Trespass September 18, 2017 The People’s United Party expresses its strongest condemnation of the actions of the Guatemalan Armed Forces and the inaction of the Government of Belize following the blatant harassment of Belizeans within our territorial waters this weekend.

We have been informed and presented with video evidence which clearly shows that at least four Guatemalan gunboats with armed personnel entered and remained within our waters at the Sarstoon as Belizeans participated in the 2nd Annual Sarstoon Island Eco-Challenge organized by the Belize Territorial Volunteers. The GAF clearly executed maneuvers designed to intimidate paddlers in their kayaks and organizers/service personnel in vessels. We are also informed that the GAF turned back one of the vessels and did not allow it to approach Sarstoon Island.

Guatemalans stationed at the Sarstoon have maintained operational control of the entire Sarstoon River, and the Government of Belize through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has committed a gross error in allowing this to happen. On various occasions SATIIM rangers have been turned back from routine patrols of the Sarstoon Temash National Park, and we know that the media has also met with Guatemalan aggression multiple times.

Our government has not taken a strong, unequivocal stance to support our territorial sovereignty over half of the Sarstoon including the Sarstoon Island. During these occasions of Guatemalans aggressing Belizeans, our military has never intervened, due to instructions coming from our Government leaders. Over this past weekend, as GAF vessels operated just in front of the BDF base at the Sarstoon, there was no movement from the BDF to assert our sovereignty or to protect Belizean lives.

The PUP calls on Prime Minister Dean Barrow and Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington to ACT NOW to protect our territorial integrity.

If they will not act, we call on them to tell the Belizean people how we lost the Sarstoon which we sing about in our National Anthem.

As we prepare to celebrate our Independence, the people deserve to know the truth.

4 04 A Good Belizean on a Pilgrimage

Delivered by: Henry Usher At the flag-raising ceremony at midnight on September 20, 1981, Premier George Price said this of our national flag, "May this symbol of unity also be a pledge of our continuing determination to dedicate ourselves to hard and productive work as we develop and organize our resources to sustain and serve the welfare of our people."

At 6:30 a.m. exactly six years ago today, Uncle George took his last breath just as Father Smalls had finished praying by his bedside. Each year we gather here at his final resting place to pay tribute and give thanks to God for giving us such an inspirational leader, the reluctant hero, disciplined teacher and phenomenal Belizean, whose only wish as is inscribed on his grave was to be known as "a good Belizean and one who went through his life on a pilgrimage and left the world a better place than he found it."

We must always remember his teachings and pass them on to the young generation of Belizeans.

I am always happy to have with us high school and primary school students. Their energy and enthusiasm are contagious, and I am confident that George Price's legacy of service will live on in them.

We must reflect also on the many lives lost and damage caused by hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Maria and others this year in our region.

In 1931 George Price survived a hurricane, a devastating storm, and he always thanked God for sparing his life and giving him the strength to be Belize's humble servant.

Today is also National Service Day, and the theme of service is one you will hear a lot. As always I ask that we all do our little part to be of service to our country and fellow Belizeans. It does not have to be anything big. We can pick up the garbage off the street; we can help the elderly get their groceries; we can read to our children; we can put away our phones and tablets and spend some quality time talking to our loved ones. Today it is not about Facebook; it is about face to face. Instead of Whatsapp, visit someone at their home and ask them what's up. We must all serve others, not ourselves, and in so doing build a better Belize.

Thank you Marshalls for that special flag ceremony. Students,

be proud of your flag, stand attention for your anthem, always be ready to defend Belize. The struggle for independence was a long and arduous one, filled with many pitfalls and naysayers. But through it all Mr. Price remained focused and steadfast. He knew that it was the will of Belizeans to be free, to have our own identity. He gave many speeches explaining the virtues of the good Belizean man and woman. He called each of us to advance the freedom and social progress of the Belizean people, which he famously called the peaceful, constructive Belizean revolution.

Uncle George was always fond of saying that it was our duty as Christians and good Belizeans to lift up the poor, to help the less fortunate and down trodden, to build a nation Belize where we work together, look out for each other and share in the wealth untold that God has bestowed upon us. His greatest effort was to engender in all of us a social conscience. There are wrongs that need attention, he would say. There are poor people who need our help, and we have a responsibility to them and to our country.

I end today with an excerpt of a speech given to the Peter Claver College graduates in Punta Gorda, Toledo in 1965. This speech was actually delivered on behalf of Mr. Price by Madam Gwen Lizarraga, the then Minister of Education. He starts by quoting Psalm 85:

The Lord proclaims peace to His people And to his faithful ones, and to those Who put in Him their hope Truth shall spring out of the earth And justice shall look down from heaven The Lord Himself will give His benefit.

Mr. Price then says, "May truth, peace and kindness be yours to share with others, to uplift and to quicken our Belizean values and to flourish and enhance our Central American land, the new Belize by the Carib Sea." Long live our beautiful nation! Long live Belize! Thank you.

Today would not be complete without paying mad respect to the father of the People’s United Party and the Father of the Nation, George Price. Six years ago he passed on but the legacy he left behind is one that we all should embrace.

His life was about service, not of self as we see these days with the criminal ministers sitting in Cabinet…but service to God, to country and people. DOB isn’t fit to shine George Price’s shoes. And that’s all I’m going to say about that. You are missed, GP, by a people who may never realize how much you sacrificed and how much you contributed to the building of this nation.

One week before we celebrate our territorial sovereignty and our identity as a Belizean people, we were chased out of the Sarstoon by Guatemala. This is the same Sarstoon we sing about in our National Anthem. We need to take it out because it doesn’t belong to us anymore. Sedi won’t say anything because he’s still regretting that he didn’t take the job of Foreign Minister in Guatemala when Carlos Raul was kicked out. DOB won’t say anything because he doesn’t really give a shit. We’re screwed under the UDP. Everything we should be celebrating this week has been turned into a lie. The End. John & Gapi Following his appearance on Corruption Reality TV in Orange Walk lately, the Big Meal has been taking a tilly in Belmopan (just a phrase people, just a phrase…no need to be remembering that nude picture of the big buffalo on Egyptian cotton sheets). See…John knows why he has aligned himself to Gapi, and it has nothing to do with loyalty, unless loyalty fills up pockets and bank accounts. But here’s the thing. The Belmopan City Council is made up of all John clones. Not one of them can think for themselves. Their campaign slogan has been WE LOVE JOHN. But it appears that on the campaign trail residents of Belmopan have been asking about Gapi and also bringing up that Mason thing, and it has become a real problem. Don’t say you got it from me, but the Councillors have planned a meeting without the Big Meal in attendance to figure out how they can deal with this gargantuan problem leading up to Municipals. I hear Patrick has been invited. Just saying…

Woman-beater…

The most interesting thing happened lately. You know those ads that aired a couple months ago which show that Patrick Faber beat up his ex-wife and girlfriend repeatedly while drunk? You know the one right? Well those stopped airing a while ago cause we kinda ran out of money. Don’t mean to be telling tales out of school but it’s true. So anyway I’m watching TV last night and I see this damned ad playing over and over in the news. So I call around to see if we got some Good Samaritan I didn’t know about who’s paying for it, and nobody on our side knows anything about it. Know what I mean? So I called the media house and they flat out refused to tell me who’s paying for the ad. Do you see where I’m going with this? Somebody is paying for ads bashing Patrick and it’s not us. You think this war in the UDP is a joke? But on another note thanks to our anonymous donor. Let’s just call him John to hide his identity. Lmao!

The Darnedest Thing…

Does anybody remember that old, wrinkled Stanley Urkel looking character who thought he was really cute and smart but wasn’t cute or smart? That guy who wouldn’t shut up. The one who claimed to know everything about everything? The saviour of the free world? The guy who went to William Mason’s house just to admire a tree and drink one Lighthouse beer? Okay you know who I’m talking about. This is like one of those episodes of ‘Where Are They Now!” Where the hell is Godwin Hulse now with all his platitudes and proclamations and (un)wise commentary? It’s like he done disappeared like magic. Last I heard a couple media houses were trying to locate him to get interviews and his phone went straight to a message – “We’re sorry but the caller you’re trying to reach is no longer a legend in his own mind. Please try again never.”

Carla Barnett and her CEO in the Ministry of Natural Resources were on Krem sometime last week.

They seem to think that Belizeans should forget the rampant, stinking corruption, the tens of millions given to UDP privileged and the thousands of acres taken by Gaspar Vega and his family members. We should instead focus on steps they are supposedly taking to close down the gaping loopholes.

Ain’t nobody buying that shit. That CEO there is the same one who signed off on the $400,000 payment for Gapi’s son Andre and the $400,000 for UDP crony Sharon Pitts. She has some serious explaining to do. And nobody wants to listen to that gaping yawn Carla Barnett spout a whole heap of steaming crap. Do me a favour please. No offence, Nuri…but the next time these people decide to come piss on our backs and tell us it’s raining we’d prefer Mose to be holding the umbrella. Just saying.

T

his week we celebrate the life and legacy of a truly extraordinary Belizean who left the jewel a better place than he found it. He was a man of God, a man of incredible determination and will, strength and humility. George Price, the Father of the Nation, is a legend in the minds and hearts of many Belizeans who are always willing to recount stories of their encounters with him. And even as they recall him with almost a sense of awe, it is not because of any power he wielded over them, or because he was a remote and majestic figure on a pedestal of leadership.

George Price is remembered with equal measures of awe, love and respect because he walked among his people, from one end of this nation to the next.

He would roll up his pants to wade across rushing streams in the deep south to reach his people in remote communities. He would pick up persons hitch-hiking on the road because they were his people, and his government ride was the people’s ride. On his travels he would stop to assist labourers hard at work. He was a nation-builder, and he did it not from a protected perch in Belmopan, but shoulder to shoulder with the masses.

The country lost much when this man of steel passed on, and so this week we celebrate his life through a day of service on the anniversary of his death. It is a time when we determine to adopt, as much as possible, a life of service to our people.

It is near impossible to envisage two leaders more different in character, principle and moral fiber than George Price and Dean Barrow. Not so long ago DOB made an incredible boast. He stated that he has never visited a home or a voter in his constituency of Queen Square, because he does not have to. His sister has been given that responsibility. She is the one who interacts with voters on her brother’s behalf, while he rules from his a/c office or from his seafront mansion, surrounded by bodyguards. Nobody will ever accuse Dean Oliver of being a man of the people. Nobody will ever accuse him of working shoulder to shoulder with residents of our jewel. Nobody will ever accuse him of being able to walk among common men of the soil, or of being humble or approachable or compassionate. Like his best friend Gaspar Vega, Dean Barrow is most certainly not a normal Belizean.

And unlike George Price, Dean Barrow will leave behind no legacy to emulate.

There will be no Service Day in celebration of his life when he bids this earth goodbye, because Dean Barrow served his people not one day while in office. No doubt his family members will gather to mourn his passing because his time in office was good to them. No doubt persons like Gaspar Vega and those members of the criminal cartel in Cabinet will miss good old Dean, because his remarkable ability to ignore and excuse and dismiss and condone corruption allowed a period of unprecedented hustling and ministerial enrichment. Imagine that there is a widespread call for an independent and comprehensive investigation into corruption in the Ministry of Natural Resources… from the Opposition, the unions and the business sector, and there has been absolutely no response from the Prime Minister. For many months now there have been calls for good governance, for oversight, for accountability and transparency and he has ignored those entreaties as if they do not exist. Under Dean Oliver, the pockets of a select few have been served and serviced, while the masses have been ignored.

On Wednesday, September 6th, leader of the People’s United Party John Briceño made a bold decision to stand against that corruption and to stand up for the people of Belize. Even when the ruling Party used the Police to attack Briceño and those brave persons who stood with him, they would not be moved. The Police used batons and tear gas to send a message on behalf of their political masters in the UDP – a message that the Cabinet cartel will do anything and everything to protect itself and to protect the hustle. But the flame of resistance was lit that day on the Tower Hill Bridge in Orange Walk. And that flame will not be extinguished.

There is a movement in Belize which is growing. It is not the drug, thug, alcohol and incentive-fuelled civil disobedience which Dean Oliver called for in those days when he hungered for the power of office. It is much more fundamental than that. The Belizean people have gotten enough of the corruption, enough of the abuse, enough of the arrogance and total neglect which has been this Barrow Administration’s modus operandi. This will be no candle in the wind.

This month we celebrate our Independence, and as this editorial is being written we hear of Belizeans being aggressed by Guatemalans in the Sarstoon because Dean Oliver and Sedi Elrington have ceded control of our territory in the South to Guatemala. This Independence, we must realize as we march on the streets that our future as a people is more uncertain than it has been since 1981 when the Union Jack was lowered and the red, white and blue raised.

It is too much. The flame of resistance is burning brightly. Power to the People.

sta semana celebramos la vida y el legado de un Beliceño verdaderamente extraordinario que dejó esta joya un mejor lugar de cómo la encontró. Era un hombre de Dios, un hombre de increíble determinación y voluntad, fuerza y humildad. George Price, el Padre de la Nación, es una leyenda en las mentes y los corazones de muchos Beliceños que siempre están dispuestos a contar historias de sus encuentros con él. Y aún lo recuerdan con casi un sentido de reverencia, y esto no es debido a ningún poder que ejerció sobre ellos, ni porque era una figura remota y majestuosa sobre un pedestal de liderazgo.

George Price es recordado con medidas iguales de admiración, respeto y amor porque caminaba entre su pueblo, de un extremo de esta nación a la siguiente. Se enrollaba los pantalones para atravesar los arroyos en el sur y para llegarle a su pueblo en comunidades remotas. Recogía a personas pidiendo jalón en la carretera porque eran su pueblo, y su vehículo del gobierno era el vehículo del pueblo. En sus viajes se detenía para ayudar a los trabajadores en el trabajo riguroso. Él era un constructor de la nación, y no lo hizo desde una posición protegida en Belmopán, pero hombro con hombro con las masas.

El país perdió mucho cuando este hombre de acero pasó a mejor vida, y así que esta semana celebramos su vida a través de un día de servicio en el aniversario de su muerte. Es un tiempo cuando determinamos a adoptar, tanto como sea posible, una vida de servicio a nuestro pueblo.

Es casi imposible imaginarse a dos líderes más diferentes en carácter, principios y fibra moral que George Price y Dean Barrow (DOB). No hace mucho tiempo DOB dijo una fanfarronada increíble. Afirmo que él nunca había visitado un hogar o a un votante en su distrito electoral de Queen Square, porque él no tiene por qué.

A su hermana se le ha dado esa responsabilidad. Ella es la que interactúa con los votantes a favor de su hermano, mientras que él gobierna desde su oficina de aire acondicionado o de su mansión frente al mar, rodeado de guardaespaldas. Nunca nadie podrá acusar a Dean Oliver de ser un hombre del pueblo. Nadie jamás lo podrá acusar de trabajar hombro a hombro con los habitantes de nuestra joya.

Nunca nadie podrá acusarlo de ser capaz de caminar entre los hombres comunes de esta tierra, o de ser humilde o accesible o compasivo. Al igual que su mejor amigo Gaspar Vega, Dean Barrow ciertamente no es un Beliceño normal.

Y a diferencia de George Price, Dean Barrow nunca dejará ningún legado para emular. No habrá ningún día de servicio en celebración de su vida cuando él se despida de esta tierra, porque Dean Barrow no le sirvió a su pueblo ni un día mientras estuvo en el gobierno. Sin duda sus familiares se reunirán para llorar su muerte porque su tiempo en el gobierno fue bueno para ellos. Sin duda a personas como Gaspar Vega y los miembros del cártel criminal en gabinete les hará falta su viejo y buen amigo Dean, porque debido a su capacidad notable para ignorar, disculpar y desentender y tolerar la corrupción permitió un periodo de chanchullos y enriquecimiento ministerial sin precedentes. Imagínese que hay un llamado generalizado para una investigación independiente y completa sobre la corrupción en el Ministerio de Recursos Naturales... de la Oposición, los Sindicatos y el sector empresarial, y no ha habido absolutamente ninguna respuesta del Primer Ministro. Hace ya muchos meses ha habido llamadas para la buena gobernabilidad, supervisión, rendición de cuentas y transparencia y él ha ignorado los ruegos como si no existieran. Bajo Dean Oliver, los bolsillos de unos pocos han sido servidos y atendidos, mientras las masas han sido ignoradas.

El miércoles, 6 de septiembre, el Líder de Partido Unido del Pueblo John Briceño tomó la decisión intrépida de oponerse a la corrupción y a defender al pueblo de Belice. Incluso cuando el partido gobernante utilizo a la policía para atacar a Briceño y las personas valientes que estaban con él, no se detuvo. La policía utilizó bastones y gas lacrimógeno para enviarle un mensaje en nombre de sus amos políticos del UDP – un mensaje indicando que el cartel de gabinete hará cualquier cosa y todo para protegerse y proteger sus chanchullos. Pero la llama de la resistencia se encendió ese día en el puente de Tower HIll en Orange Walk. Y esa llama no se extinguirá.

Hay un movimiento en Belice que está creciendo. No es desobediencia civil impulsada por la droga, alcohol y pandilleros alentados con incentivos que Dean Oliver utilizo en aquellos días cuando estaba hambriento por el poder de gobernar. Es mucho más fundamental que eso. El pueblo Beliceño está hastiado de la corrupción, basta del abuso, basta ya de la arrogancia y el descuido total que ha sido el modus operandi de esta administración Barrow. No se trata de una pequeña luz en medio de la tormenta.

Este mes celebramos nuestra independencia, y mientras se escribe este editorial escuchamos de Beliceños siendo agredidos por los guatemaltecos en el Sarstoon porque Dean Oliver y Sedi Elrington han cedido el control de nuestro territorio en el sur a Guatemala. En este día de independencia, debemos darnos cuenta mientras desfilamos en las calles que nuestro futuro como pueblo es lo más incierto que ha sido desde 1981 cuando la bandera británica fue bajada y el rojo, blanco y azul izada.

Es demasiado. La llama de la resistencia está ardiendo brillantemente. Poder al pueblo.

Tuesday, September 18, 2017 Tuesday, September 19 marks the sixth anniversary of the death of the Father of the Nation, the Right Hon. George Price. Belizeans across the length and breadth of the jewel are commemorating National Service Day in memory of Price and his life-long service and contributions to Belize. San Ignacio and Santa Elena councillor candidates Javier Castellanos and Zoila Palma have prepared ten boxes of reading books to donate to two primary schools, one in Santa Elena Town and one in San Ignacio Town. The candidates told us that the donation is to encourage students to visit their libraries more often and to motivate them to read, read, read.

“Today, we celebrate the life of the father of our nation. Right Honorable George Price. His life and his legacy taught us to serve, to serve our people and to serve our country. This is a very important day and we must also as educators teach students about the struggle for Independence. On Thursday, Belize will be celebrating 36 years of being a free nation thanks to the peaceful, constructive Belizean revolution. So by us doing this today, we want to share the love of the PUP. We want to carry on his legacy of serving our people. This party has always been one to serve all our people and to put priorities first. Education is a priority and we must look after the benefit of the future of this country and that is exactly what our team and our party is about.”

Palma told us.

Castellanos reiterated the importance of contributing to students’ education and celebrating the life and service that George Price gave to our country: “National Service Day is about giving back to our community, serving our people and commemorating the life of the leader who fought for Belize - a leader who set an example for all of us to follow.

Our team is committed to serving all residents of this municipality.”

They told the Belize Times that the twin towns PUP 7 team has many more activities planned for San Ignacio and Santa Elena. The team will also be participating in the Independence Day parade that will commence at 1pm at the Santa Elena Sports Complex and end at the Macal River Park in San Ignacio.

Guatemala Disrespects Belize’s Military Attaché Tuesday, 19 September 2017 Lieutenant Colonel Ricardo Leal, Belize’s Military Attaché posted at the Belize Embassy in Guatemala was stopped and harassed by Guatemalan authorities as he traveled home by road several days ago in his assigned Belize diplomatic vehicle.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that Leal was on personal leave and was stopped at a military checkpoint somewhere in Peten. They say the Guatemalans accused him of being intoxicated and retained the assigned Black Toyota 4Runner at their Military compound.

According to Belize officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, when Belizean authorities intervened, they confirmed that Leal was certainly not intoxicated. So sure were they of this that they did not find it necessary to

take any specimen from him. Separately, we are told Lt. Col. Leal offered to provide such samples to prove his case to the Guatemalans but they did not take him up on it.

2017 The official we spoke with maintains that the Guatemalans did not bring any charge against Lt. Col. Leal and therefore, he is back in Guatemala City since Monday September 11th performing his duties, and the vehicle has been returned to him.

Most notable in all of this however, is that under the Vienna Convention, as was explained by the foreign affairs official, a diplomat has certain immunity in the “receiving State” and Lt. Col. Leal should therefore not have had the vehicle taken away from him or been detained in the first place. In that regard, all that Belize’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said is that Guatemala apologized and indicated that the entire fiasco was a gross error on the part of Guatemalan authorities. Belize has seemingly accepted that apology without much concern and is moving on stating that the matter is now considered closed. In the case of this serious diplomatic transgression, they have effectively downplayed yet again Guatemala’s continued disrespect for Belize and Belizeans.

BAR ASSOCIATION WANTS CJ BENJAMIN GONE Tuesday, September 19, 2017 On Friday September 15th at a special meeting the Bar Association of Belize passed three unprecedented, serious and unanimous resolutions regarding some 28 outstanding judgments of the Hon. Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin. Among them is that the Chief Justice makes good on his commitment to deliver judgments based on a timeline he himself had set and if he cannot, then they are calling on him to resign. If he refuses to do so, the Bar has resolved to file a complaint with the Judicial and Legal Services Commission on his failure to deliver judgments on a timely manner and in contravention of the Constitution.

The Chief Justice had tried to avert the actions against him by submitting a timetable just days before the Bar Association’s meeting but as it turns out, the schedule had been submitted before and not complied with. Bar Association president, Priscilla Banner told the media during an interview on Monday September 18th, that the decision was not taken lightly or with any fanfare, but rather was heavily taken.

The Bar has been meeting with the Hon. Benjamin since 2014 to get him to deliver delayed judgments.

The members therefore felt that they had no other choice but to address the situation front on and strictly using an approach other than relying on the word of the head of the Judiciary.

Banner holds that the utmost concern of the Bar Association is the litigants. She used the example of one claimant who passed away without learning of the decision in his case. Therefore, while upholding respect for the Chief Justice, Banner reveals that the Bar Association has lost confidence in his word. Reference is made to the tenets of the Constitution that a failure of the Chief Justice to discharge his constitutional duty in the handing down of judgments within reasonable time consti-

NO CALLA CREEK BRIDGE FOR STUDENTS Tuesday, September 19, 2017 Hurricane Earl hit Belize on August 4, 2016 as a Category One hurricane.

In its way, Earl battered the trees, roof tops, homes and bridges. Today, over a year later, residents of Calla Creek continue to suffer the damage of Earl and the negligence of the UDP. Since Earl washed away the Hammock Bridge spanning the Mopan river in Calla Creek village, students are forced daily to cross in canoes to go to school and return home from school. The students cross in the morning before classes, for lunch time going home and returning to school and in the evening.

After the hurricane hit, the Ministry of Education had pledged to provide transportation for students. However, that only lasted a short period of time before it was discontinued. According to the residents, they have reported numerous complaints and concerns to the Village Chairman but there has been no effort forthcoming to alleviate the situation. In an interview with the Belize Times, a concerned teacher of the primary school told us that it is dangerous for the students to be crossing daily and is an inconvenience to them and their parents: “The Government has the money to pay a bus to go all around because they started doing that then they ended it. They have money to pay a skiff to cross the children but yet they say that there is no money to fix the bridge and it is a hammock bridge.

They have two blocks that was to be a bridge for the village but when government changed, ideas changed too.

Even that hammock bridge that was washed away was dangerous because they used to fix it with old sticks and it was falling again. Last year, they began with the bus, then they stopped it so now the children cross in the little skiff there. They cross in the morning at 8 and then for lunch and in the evening to go home. If they are so concerned with students not missing classes and being in school, why don’t they do something about this situation? The road from Bullet Tree to Calla Creek is also very abandoned and dangerous. They don’t even take care of it, so people prefer trying to cross the river too. Something needs to be done urgently about this though, because many of our parents are concerned about their students crossing like this.”

One of the parents of the Primary School also told us that her greatest fear is that something goes wrong one of these days and a child would drown: “This going to school and coming everyday worries me a lot because I am afraid that the skiff would capsize or one of those kids would fall in and drown. That is my biggest fear and concern. This issue is not from right now…it has been happening from a long time. Now we are in a new school year and still nobody has done nothing to fix this. It is like nobody cares about our children. We told the Chairman and we told Minister Erwin. He knows about our situation but as we try to say

something he sends Police for us. We, the parents are tired of this. They need to come and fix this. This is how they say that they care about education.

The residents hope that the Minister of Works or Erwin Contreras answer their plea for the construction of a bridge. However, sources have confirmed to the Belize Times that the Chairman of the Village has given up trying to ask Contreras for help since he seems to have no interest in doing anything for Calla Creek Village.

THE CHARLIE GARD CASE

Charlie Gard was a baby who was born in England on August 4, 2016 to Connie Yates and Chris Gard. He was born with an extremely rare condition called mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome. His plight and that of his loving parents attracted massive attention worldwide because of the legal fight that ensued between doctors and the medical profession on the one hand and his desperate parents on the other.

Almost as soon as he was born he grew weak. He lost movement entirely, and he had to be placed on a ventilator which breathed for him. A few months later he became severely brain damaged, but in this era of social media and instant communication his parents widely publicized their child's condition and managed to raise over 1.3 million Pounds Sterling to try to save him. They wished to take Charlie to the United States, because they had heard of a Doctor Michio Hirano there who was apparently researching an experimental treatment. British doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital, a top children's hospital not only in Britain but also in the world, did consider experimental treatment, but because of extensive diagnosis and many sound opinions of the child's condition, they opposed further experimenting, stating that it was not in the best interests of the patient.

Very sadly, the communication and relationship of trust between Charlie's parents and the doctors broke down, and although the hospital was of the view that treatment was most unlikely to have helped, its doctors applied to the High Court for judges to decide the child's future. In April this year the Court agreed with the doctors, and what arose clearly was the ethical issue of who is to decide - Parents, Doctors or the Court. Should the life support of little Charlie have been taken off?

The whole thing turned into an international court drama, and even Pope Francis and President Trump weighed in. In any event the European Human Rights Court upheld the British Court's decision in favour of the doctors.

It was learned later that Dr. Hi-

rano had made pronouncements without knowing the condition of the child. His experimental treatment had not even been tested on mice yet, and he also had a financial interest in some of the treatments he proposed prescribing for Charlie. Meanwhile things got nasty, with doctors and staff of Great Ormond Street Hospital receiving death threats. One report said that doctors and staff of the hospital were subjected to “a shocking and disgraceful tide of hostility.” Dr. Hirano was still given permission to examine Charlie, and he found that the child's condition was too far gone for any therapy. However, the hospital's doctors maintained that after just four months of life Charlie's condition had already irreversibly deteriorated.

After this, Charlie's parents decided to abandon legal proceedings, but the long Court battle was very emotional and draining for all involved. There was even dispute over where and how the child's life support should be withdrawn. The parents wanted to take the child home to die, but the hospital pointed to the child's suffering. Finally, a Judge had to order the removal of life support at the hospital. Charlie Gard lived until July 28, 2017. He died at just under one-year-old.

This was a heartbreaking case, and what a great pity that confidence broke down between doctors and Charlie's parents. If there are any lessons learned these are that ethical questions are never easy. Who is to say?? Further, medical experts should refrain from opinions until they have fully reviewed all the evidence and seen the patient face to face. In Charlie's case all the medical experts who examined the child agreed that nothing could have been done for the child. Doctors are not infallible, but good sense dictates that we should heed the advice of experts who have the best interests of a child at heart. Even so, parents' feelings and wishes must also be respected. The case of Charlie Gard was an excruciating one. It is a matter of finding the balance between opposing sides and doing what is ultimately best for a patient, especially a suffering child.

BELIZE AT 36 September 21st 2017 will mark 36 years of independence. Given the vast amount of outrageous scandals on top of scandals by this Dean Barrow government and his Cabinet of untouchables, what has a UDP government of the past 9 years done to improve the quality of an Independent Belize?

During this week, we are also reminded of the Father of the Nation, Rt. Honorable George Cadle Price both because of his struggle for an independent Belize and because of September 19th, the anniversary date of his passing which is commemorated as the National Day of Service. This should cause every Belizean to consider what we are doing individually to champion the principles of integrity and robust leadership for a stronger Belize.

George Price once said “I believe that a country's first duty is to set its own house in order; and having set its own house in order, it can contribute better to the community of the world.

Instead of being a weak link, it should be a strong link.” Dean Oliver Barrow and his Cabinet have demonstrated time over time that they are a weak link to the community of Belize and for the future of Belize. One of the weakest of links is undoubtedly the Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr. Sedi Elrington.

His incompetence to lead with confidence any discussion on the unfounded Guatemala claim was magnified when he and his office did not denounce in the strongest terms the Guatemala military control of activities on the Sarstoon River and in the internal waters of Belize. The most recent aggressive action by Guatemala was witnessed this past weekend. The Belize Territorial Volunteers proved once again that under this government, Belize in effect has lost its Sarstoon. On September 21st 2017, when all are asked to rise and sing the national anthem, PM Barrow, Sedi Elrington and all others who say from the Rio Hondo to the Sarstoon are singing words without real meaning to them.

The theme for this year’s September celebrations refers to confronting challenges. But PM Barrow has shown his remarkable impotence in this regard. Like Ali Baba, PM Barrow allows his rogue Cabinet men ministers in particular to roam wild and free, truly independent of any checks or balances, of any correction and obligation to comply with the laws of Belize. His apparent

inaction to deal with the mounting allegations from various Ministry departments is a testament to his lack of strength, determination and testicular fortitude required to wield that double sided machete he famously heralded in 2008.

Further evidence of the lack of commitment of this Government to break free from the chains of corrupt acts among its own is further evidenced in the Attorney General’s wishy-washy fluffed up press release on the progress of UNCAC. In short, there is not much progress save and except for the Attorney General enjoying his trip to Vienna and meetings upon meetings yielding no tangible results. There is no real commitment by this government to real action on implementing UNCAC. Nor is there any real effort in investigating the land scandals. A cursory listen to Minister of State Carla Barnett will verify there is no interest to correcting the wrongs that were done under Vega. Minister Barnett has yet to update the nation on the status of the land compensation investigation that her government said would be completed by the end of last year.

To further add insult to injury as the saying goes, PM Barrow has decided he will be judge, jury and commissioner and determined that the Senate Inquiry will come to an end.

The Deputy Prime Minister, who also has his fair share of scandals, agreed with his view that there is nothing there; although the entire nation has witnessed for months the unveiling of questionable acts and behavior by several ministers of government. Then there is Clear the Land Castro under Dean Barrow who has been given a free ride over the last 9 years despite the allegations, the court declarations, the revocation of his tourist and diplomatic visas, his using Belize Airports Authority funds for his personal expenses and the list goes on. PM Barrow is weak on corruption; weak on correction and weak on confronting challenges. He is that weak link that the Father of the Nation referred to.

Yet, on September 21st he will break his long silence and paint a picture of Belize that is devoid of reality.

National Service Day Monday, 19th September 2017 Good morning and on this warm Belizean morning welcome to all of you here present and those streaming live.

Congressman Eliot Engel and the members the US delegation, and our other friends in the diplomatic community; former Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Said Musa, Deputy Party Leaders, Party Chairman and supporters; members of the Price Family and to all gathered here today: we’re glad you came.

Every year we come to Lord Ridge Cemetery not to mourn but to celebrate the life and work of Mr. Price.

We place flowers on his grave to show our love and appreciation for his life and his work in the service of God and country.

We offer prayers of thanksgiving and we sing the songs he loved to sing in church, songs like Onward Christian Soldiers, marching as to war and an Army of Youth flying the standards of truth.

These are spirited songs that are anthems to a revolution of the mind and the spirit; they are a call to action. These were hymns that Mr. Price believed embodied the message of his peaceful, constructive Belizean Revolution. So sing them with much spirit, as Mr. Price would have loved it.

In the sixties and seventies Mr. Price traveled across our country, especially speaking to young people about his revolution.

In Stann Creek he spoke of the new Belizean man and woman strong and sturdy, fully prepared for nation building. In Toledo he taught about Belizean values. He always believed that Belizean values were at their core Christian and democratic. He sought to build and proclaimed our political philosophy as one that he referred to as Christian democracy.

He started this movement in a time when our world was divided politically into two super powers and a new world order was being formed putting colonialism in its rightful place, in the trash heap of history.

Mr. Price knew all too well that we had to think and act differently. In his wisdom this was the best way to save us from becoming pawns and avoid us being caught up in the conflicts that were surrounding us and were oppressing many of the people in neighbouring states.

The sixties were troubling times in this region and the influences that were driving the world order were power and greed. He summed it up aptly in his speech in Punta Gorda in 1965 when he told students that “we live near the geographic navel of the Americas, where north and south and east and west meet in an earth-shaking conflict of ideologies that proclaim each in its way of thinking the best way of life for the twentieth century man and woman.”

He said for us to build Belize the foundations could not be power and greed, but compassion and hard work. He believed with all his heart that those values that would last through the ages, and would mark our true worth as good Belizean citizens are Christian values.

Mr. Price said “this meant that our task is to work to produce the goods and the services that will make Belize great, to help our less fortunate brothers and sisters who yet suffer poverty and misery and humiliation.”

He told the students in PG that even Christian and democratic concepts of values change, that some could be lost and some destroyed. The values that cannot be destroyed or lost however, the ones that were precious and imperishable for Mr. Price are those values that are within us.

He said: “they are our mind and our heart, and our ability to enjoy the riches and joys of the world around us.”

In my weekly radio address I said that Mr. Price never cared about the many awards and titles he received. I also said that he always saw himself as a worker.

Perhaps his successor and one of our former Party Leaders and Prime Minster the Rt. Hon. Said Musa, also a compassionate man, knew all too well and felt that a man who cared so much for a nation and for its people and who asked nothing in return was truly deserving of the title of National Hero.

And so on this National Service Day, which was set aside to honor this humble yet strong man, our Father of the Nation, let us never forget our duty to our families, our community and our nation.

Let us do so in that tried and tested tradition of Service to God and country and let us together continue the task of building a Belize that works for everyone.

TRIBUTE TO THE FATHER OF THE NATION By: Said Musa September 19, 2017 He was the architect of Independence. He is the Father of the Nation. George Price who died on the 19th September 2011 thirty years after he led our nation to Independence with full sovereignty and territorial integrity over land and sea. The Rt. Hon. George Price is the National Hero of Belize.

He was one of a small group of rebel leaders calling themselves a People’s Committee which began holding public protest meetings when on December 31st 1949 the colonial Governor using his reserve power in the Legislative Council, decreed a devaluation of the dollar.

Devaluation was the catalyst that triggered the Nationalist Movement led by the People’s United Party formed on the 29 September 1950 to end the exploitation and free Belize from the oppressive and deplorable conditions in which the people were living; abject poverty, rampant unemployment, a depressed economy under colonial domination.

George Price became the leader of the PUP in 1956 and for 40 years he was the undisputed driving force in the people’s struggle for self-government (achieved in 1964), the building of a new capital Belmopan following the disastrous hurricane Hattie in 1961 which devastated Belize City.

The change of the name of our country from British Honduras to Belize took place in 1973. Premier Price in introducing the Bill in the House of Representatives remarked “To retain the name British Honduras is to subvert the burning ambition and aspirations of the Belizean people for independence.” It took a while but this vision of George Price and the dream of the Belizean people were finally realized on September 21st 1981.

Today, six years after the passing of our great Leader, this generation who are the inheritors of the peaceful constructive Belizean revolution led by George Price must gird our loins and be prepared to engage in a new phase of this revolution.

The promise of Independence is yet to be fulfilled. It is a work in progress! Our National Anthem proclaims: “From proud Rio Hondo to old Sarstoon, through coral isle, over blue lagoon, keep watch with the angels, the stars and the moon; For freedom comes tomorrow’s noon.” That part of the anthem is the inspiration but the anthem is also a call to action: “Arise! (Ye sons and daughters of the revolution).

Put on your armour, clear the land! Drive back the tyrants, let despots flee, Land of the Free by the Carib Sea.” Yes, drive back the tyrants those who will use the security forces not to fight crime and violence but to oppress the people for demonstrating against wrongs committed in high places. Drive back the tyrant who instead of standing up for honest governance to put a stop to the abuse of office by his Ministers, uses sophistry and rhetoric inebriated by the exuberance of his own verbosity to cover up the abuses and corruption in his government.

Let despots flee who will use their ministerial office for self-aggrandizement in the sale of visas and passports aiding and abetting modern day slavery of trafficking in persons.

Let despots flee who will use the Ministry of Natural Resources to enrich himself and his family in a gigantic fraudulent land scheme involving thousands of acres of prime land robbing the resources of Belize in the millions of dollars.

What a betrayal of the trust and legacy that our national hero George Price who dedicated his life’s work to empower thousands of Belizeans to own their homes and to own their own parcel of land to farm and produce food for their families and the nation.

Let despots flee those who will squander over $400 million dollars of Petro-Caribe money and raise our country’s national debt to over $3 billion dollars without a single housing program to benefit the people who live in overcrowded dilapidated shacks. All these millions spent and yet so many of our young people are denied a quality relevant education; so many millions spent and yet basic primary health care is denied to many while a cash-strapped government drastically reduces the benefits of NHI and deplete the funds of Social Security to spend on B.T.L. and UDP political activities.

And so as we honour and pay Tribute to the Father of the Nation, let is resolve to right the wrongs and continue his constructive revolution for freedom justice and equality. Let us arise, put on our armour and clear the land of injustice, abuse and corruption. And let us work to fulfill the promise of Independence. Que Viva George Price! Que Viva Belize!

Independence Day

On September 21st, the usual dignitaries will gather under a tent provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The usual military personnel, Ambassadors, officials, Members of Parliament, observers, cronies and performers will sit in the heat of the day and they will listen to the usual bullshit speech from Dean Oliver rehashing the same old crap from years past. It will no doubt be a well-crafted piece of dung, the right combination of cautious optimism, commitments and bold, brazen lies about the state of the economy. It will be wonderfully presented with rehearsed pauses, gestures and expressions. We’ve heard it all before. We know it is hogwash. But all under the tent will clap – some politely, others with riotous abandon as if to show Dean that they are worthy of his favour. Why do we do it?

We are NOT living in a good country under the rule of Dean Oliver. What exactly are we celebrating here? Today we know that Belizeans are still not allowed free access to our portion of the Sarstoon River. At one time the UDP sang about not giving up a blade of grass, but they ended up giving Guatemala our entire portion of the Sarstoon River including all the blades of grass on Sarstoon Island. Yet I have no doubt that during his Independence rhetoric, Dean Oliver will spout some appropriately patriotic rubbish which has no bearing in fact. A couple weeks ago Sedi Elrington shocked the nation by informing us that no country recognizes our borders. Imagine that. Did you know that? I didn’t. Not one member of the UDP, neither the Prime Minister nor any of the Cabinet cartel, has stood up to say that Sedi is a loon, because he undoubtedly is – and a dangerous loon at that because he dictates the foreign policy of our country.

Maybe Dean Oliver will speak a little about crime on Independence Day. Perhaps he will mention all the amazing, non-existent initiatives being put in place by the Police to curb crime.

It is a certainty that he will make up a whole bunch of stuff about his government’s investments in the fight against crime, when the truth is that Police barely have resources to operate, and whatever resources they do have, our leaders begged for. Our Police Officers are forced to live in substandard dorms like the one on Caye Caulker which government has only been promising to fix for like four years now. They are transferred, and transferred again but are unable to get their transfer allowances. The Department is demoralized because it is riddled with corruption and tainted by political interference.

The Commissioner of Police is a political puppet, and the ranks below him are filled with up and coming political puppets. Many in the lower ranks do the job right and are chastised because right now it is about following political orders, and not doing the job right. Others just go with the program, because they see officers above them doing it. But Dean Oliver will not say that. He will say none of that.

And he will not speak about the grenade which exploded in San Pedro this weekend. He will pretend that did not happen.

He will not speak about corruption, because he would be speaking about himself. This is the most corrupt administration in our political history.

But it is much more than that. It is one thing for Ministers to be corrupt, and that is way bad enough. But it is quite another thing for a deliberate manipulation of all processes, systems and oversight entities to condone that corruption. Under the UDP, corruption has been allowed to grow and thrive. Under the UDP, we have seen the most outrageous gluttony and enrichment of Ministers, and not one of them has been investigated or prosecuted because Dean Oliver has protected them with every ounce of his being and with every iota of power within his grasp.

Gaspar Vega will go to jail. You can take that to the bank. But he will not go under a UDP administration because he will be protected to the end. And there are other Ministers who will be made to answer for their ludicrous riches, like Rene Montero. But it will not be under a Barrow administration.

So listen to him go off on Independence Day. And clap and cheer. And then go back to your miserable existences while he is chauffeured to his seafront mansion. Dean Barrow will never one day know poverty or want.

He has made sure of that. How about you? How are you doing?

Today is a very special day for me, as it should be one for all Belizeans. It is National Service Day, so named in honour of and tribute to a remarkable man, our National Hero George Price. This morning his family, along with members of his PUP family, friends and members of the diplomatic corps came together as we do every year to lay wreaths on his earthly resting place.

The love, respect and honour with which many hold Mr. Price is testament to the life of service he lived.

National Service Day is one which should be of exceptional significance to the People’s United Party which holds Mr. Price so dear. It should not be just a time when we attend a wreath-laying ceremony then go on about our business as usual. It should instead be a reminder to us of the legacy we must live by. The People’s United Party was born to serve the people of Belize in every walk of life, at that time to give them a voice against the colonialism which oppressed them and held them down.

Over the years, politics has changed until it has become all about service to self - first, second and last.

We have seen the most outrageous corruption under the Barrow administration. We have seen Ministers go from common folk to multi-millionaires in months. We have seen regular Belizeans become multi-millionaires and property managers who keep wads of cash in their socks.

We have seen abnormal Belizeans use their power in office to feed from the public trough until they and their families have amassed wealth which normal Belizeans can only imagine. And while the few privileged serve themselves, the majority of Belizeans are neglected.

So today, those of us who are in positions to serve the people, or who are aspiring

to serve, MUST remember the mantra of the PUP - Serve the People. We are not in this to serve ourselves. We are not in this to make ourselves richer.

When George Price left political office, he was able to say with all sincerity that he left with exactly what he brought in. How many politicians today can say that they are in it for the service of people and country and not for themselves? So it is a valuable reminder to all of us in the PUP to hold on to the legacy of Mr. Price, and to keep to the path he forged – a path of honesty, integrity, hard-work and selfless service. Today let us never forget our roots, because our people have been crying out for a return to good governance and that is what the next government of the People’s United Party must give them.

But National Service Day is not a PUP day. It is a Belizean day, and a time which reminds all of us young and old that we should live our lives helping others when we can. For our students at every level who prepare with us to celebrate Independence Day, take this week, because by the time you read this National Service Day will be done – take this week to do good for others. Help someone with their homework, or do some errands at home. Take out the garbage. Help an elderly person to cross the street. Gather some of your friends together and clean up a park in your neighbourhood. Or simply pick up garbage and deposit it in the trash can. It is just a matter of doing something in service of others and in service of the country, with the hope that the lesson sticks throughout life.

This week the memory of George Price will be with us, especially when we raise that flag at midnight to usher in the day of our Independence. It is my hope that we can learn something from this amazing intellectual, this hard-working man of strength and determination and humility.

Happy National Service Day Belize. Happy Independence Day Belize.

CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE FOR BETTERMENT

Concerned residents of Belize City, who support civil disobedience to oppose corruption and mismanagement in government for a better country are invited to a very important meeting on Friday, October 6, 2017, at 6:00pm sharp at Monica’s Pawnshop #128 Cemetery Rd near the Lord Ridge Cemetery.

In contesting the 2008 general election which it won, the then Opposition UDP said it would address the needs of the people and end corruption in government. Prior to that general election, allegations of mismanagement and massive corruption led to the DFC Inquiry and constant street protests.

After almost a decade in office the UDP has proven itself to be the most corrupt, self-centered and negligent administration in the history of this country. Allegations of massive corruption under the Red have led to the Senate Inquiry into the Immigration scandal and calls for inquiries into scandals at practically every other government department. There have also been calls for investigations into the alleged misappropriation of huge amounts of funds from the Belize Airports Authority and Petrocaribe. Most of the UDP Ministers are accused of involvement in some major hustling or other unlawful actions.

Despite nine Budgets of over a billion dollars each, over $400 million from Petrocaribe, countless millions from oil production and millions more in grants and loans from abroad, the number of persons living in poverty today is far more than when the UDP was elected to office in 2008.

The cry of the people for jobs, a just increase in the minimum wage, land, proper housing, greater access to education, better healthcare and an end to corrup-

tion among other things have been totally ignored.

It is therefore time for all concerned Belizeans and civic-minded organizations in this country to support civil disobedience to take back our country. Belize and its resources belong to all of us, not just to the handful of Ministers, their families and their cronies.

Civil disobedience is normal to end corruption, neglect, mismanagement and injustice in one's country. Some of the persons who are regarded as great leaders today for leading civil disobedience to attain a better life for their people are Father of the Nation George Price, Phillip Goldson, Antonio Soberanis, Martin Luther King, Fidel Castro, Mahatma Gandhi, Ben Gourion and Nelson Mandela.

In 2017 we can't depend on the business community, the churches, the NGOs and the unions with the exception of the BNTU to save our country because most of the representatives of their umbrella organizations are compromised.

Due to personal agendas most of those leaders have consistently refused to walk the walk for accountability in government to end our hardships and sufferings.

To help achieve the just objectives of good governance and a better life for all Belizeans civil disobedience must be peaceful, strategic and sustained. Led by Party Leader John Briceño and the PUP Northern Caucus a fortnight ago our brothers and sisters in the north used civil disobedience to stand against corruption and mismanagement in government when they blocked the Tower Hill Bridge.

Belize City is the commercial center of this country and its largest population center, but it has been quiet like the sleeping giant for far too long. It’s time for residents of the municipality to stand up and embrace civil disobedience to demand an end to corruption and mismanagement in this country.

BELIZEANS TRIED TO INVADE THE SARSTOON ISLAND

The Guatemalan Army announced Saturday that a group of Belizeans attempted to invade the Sarstoon Island in Livingston, Izabal.

Prensa Libre; Ciudad Guatemala 16 de Septiembre de 2017 Translated to English by: Omar Silva The Guatemalan Navy Infantry Brigade, in conjunction with its Caribbean Naval Command, through naval station attached to the Sarstoon River, carried out an operation in defence of our national sovereignty after detecting an NGO ensnaring Belizean citizens to cross into the island in kayaks, purportedly as an ecotourism activity; but people in the group had political intentions.

FAG’s detailed count placed at least seventeen boats, 15 kayaks and two boats, with elements of the Belize Coast Guard, in the vicinity around 10 am where they initiated a sporting activity and where a closer check revealed that no one there had the pertinent authorization or permissions by the Guatemalan Foreign Ministry/ Immigration to be in the area or dock on sovereign soil, so GAF’s Navy Metal Sharks units surrounded them and forced them out of Guatemalan waters.

They stood around the Belizean vessels where there spotted and identified political activist Will Maheia, a mayoral candidate for Punta Gorda, Belize, leading the group which amounted to at least 30 people who tried to install a Belizean flag in the area while they sang the Belizean nation-

al anthem, but they weren’t allowed to achieve their purpose.

They were armed.

GAF Surveillance units detected that in one of the boats the crew was traveling with two elements of the Belize Coast Guard. They were wearing ski masks and armed with M-16 military type weapons, which must be authorized, so that a captain of the Guatemalan Infantry Brigade, after identifying them, forced them out of Guatemalan territorial waters.

The Guatemalan Department of Immigration and the Superintendency of Tax Administration were called out to process and request payment of their respective charges from Belizeans considered foreigners carrying out activities in another country’s waters, but Belizeans did not have funds themselves.

The Issue For 250 years, there is an ongoing dispute between both countries and since then several groups have tried to invade the bordering region areas.

In the special example of the Sarstoon Island located in the mouth of the Sarstoon River, several political groups have tried to claim it as their own, but records show it to be Guatemalan territory and sovereignty. As a result of the disagreements, it has been agreed to carry out a popular consultation, in both countries, with the intention to take the claim to the ICJ in order to elucidate the situation of the territory.
