Continued from page 1 violence associated with the drug trade, it is believed that Hernandez was executed because of what he saw that morning in the vehicle of Alamilla, a known henchman of former UDP Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega.

He was shot by a gunman who waited to assassinate him in the early morning hours of Sunday, St. George’s Caye Day. At around 6 a.m., Hernandez was walking a woman home, and while on the San Antonio Road, they were accompanied by other persons. The gunman, who was wearing a mask over his face which covered everything but his eyes, approached them on a bicycle.

Hernandez realized that this street assassin came to kill him, and the woman he was with told the press that it was as if he was waiting for someone to make an attempt on his life. In vivid detail, she explained how the murder happened.

She said, “When I lift up my head I saw the person took out a gun and so I threw myself on the ground and I yelled ‘please no’ and he tried to run and that was when I heard the gunshots. I got up and I ran into Mr. Camin's yard which is right where we were and then I ran behind the pickup and then I peeped and then I saw him fall and the person shot him [again]. The person had on something on his face. I couldn't know who it was.

Only the person eyes were showing.”

Hernandez’s family says that he suffered 3 gunshots to the head, and from the female companion’s account, it appears that the assailant shot him once when he was trying to flee, and twice more when he fell on the ground.

He was rushed to the Northern Regional Hospital, and then later to the KHMH, where the doctors tried their best to save his life. Unfortunately, at around 6:30 p.m. just over 13 hours after being gunned down, Hernandez succumbed to the injures and died.

Of course his family, especially, his mother, is devastated by the loss. This murderer took her only son from her, and it is being widely speculated that the gunman was hired to take his life so that he

can’t be of any help to the DPP’s Office when Hilmar Alamilla actually stands trial for murder. He was one of 2 men inside Hilmar Alamilla’s vehicle in the early morning hours of July 29. He gave a statement to Police allegedly providing critical details.

Alamilla is waiting for the trial in jail, and he has one less witness to tie him to the murder of Daniel Sosa.

The well-connected UDP operative and right hand of the very powerful Gaspar Vega is believed to know a lot about the dealings of the Vega family, and not only those land deals which are in the news these days.

The Belize Times is reliably informed that the final witness in the trial has also received threats on his life.

Thursday, 14 September 2017 The Belize National Teachers’ Union has checked Prime Minister Dean Barrow and reminded him that the BNTU strike of October 2016 simply remains ON HOLD. The threat comes in the wake of the PM’s decision that the Government of Belize will not finance the work of the Immigration Senate Inquiry beyond November 2017.

Barrow’s explanation is that funding is limited because of the institution of the Integrity Commission and the setting up of the UNCAC. But the BNTU is not buying it and points out that there are no tangible results from those two entities to justify that excuse. Furthermore, the Union cannot comprehend why Barrow is failing to see the tremendous importance of the Committee’s work especially in a time when there is revelation after revelation of scandals in different government departments.

The Union tells the PM that it will not “sit idly by and allow this process to be derailed before it comes to its natural conclusion. Through this medium, Prime Minister Barrow and his government are reminded that the BNTU strike remains ON HOLD as we continue to monitor the work of these highly essential check and balance organs.

PRINCIPAL THREATENED WITH GRENADE Thursday, 14 September 2017 Only a little over 100 of 700 students showed up for classes at St. Martin de Porres School in Belize City today, September 14, 2017. That principal is Mrs. Annie Palacio who took over the post on September 4th and was in her office when we got there. Outside however, the Police had set up checkpoints at two spots on Partridge Street and cops were checking the vehicles of motorists wishing to enter.

Palacio shared that as soon as she got wind of the information she called in her management and informed the Police. She was assigned Police escort and a sweep of the grounds was done at 6a.m. to ascertain that no explosive device was present.

As to why she would be targeted, Palacio cannot pinpoint any motive. Whatever the case, she notes

that all precautions are being taken and encouraged parents to send their children to school without fear the next day. “We have placed strategic plans that will assist us in ensuring that our grounds are safe. We feel very good that we are in safe hands and that the children are safe here along with the staff. The teachers are here. We are ready to get going. We can’t afford to let fear take us hostage. We will not allow it,” she said.

Palacio has an extensive educational background, having taught from the pre-school level up to tertiary level.

She affirmed that she will do the best for her students “to get our school academically back on board; to get out children more into sports; to get our children more disciplined because they come from a neighbourhood where they feel as if where there are at right now, that’s where they should stay. And that’s not going to happen here. We’re going to ensure that our students know that they are smart, they are intelligent and they can be and do whatever they want to do.” Case in point: herself as she is a graduate from St. Martin de Porres.

Despite that strongly worded statement from the most powerful union, the Chairman of the Committee, Senator Aldo Salazar has sided with Barrow. He stated following Wednesday’s hearing that after 8 months, the work of the committee is almost coming to an end, and “the Prime Minister is free to express and hold the view that he feels we’ve had ample time and we’ve been allocated adequate resources…I share that view.”

Senator Salazar would not say what is the view of the other committee members but Business Community Senator, Mark Lizarraga – like the BNTU – did express concern in a separate interview. In fact, he feels disappointed that “we seem to find moneys just for about everything else under the sun and we can’t seem to find moneys to continue with what I consider to be a very important process.”

While Senator Salazar believes that only the current CEO and Immigration Minister should be brought to testify, Senator Lizarraga considers that there are several other witnesses, including officials from the Vital Statistics Unit who should appear.

Separately, Lizarraga has also questioned some of the figures that have been cited for the spending of the Committee.

The senators requested financial reports to support the figures. However, he notes that the Belizean people will have to decide if this is more important than other projects. Nonetheless, he has expressed willingness to continue the public hearings even without financing.

SSB PIGGY BANK – FOR UDP USE ONLY!

CEO Colin Young Thursday, 14 September 2017 The Belize Times has confirmed that the Social Security Board has very quietly started discontinuing the non-contributory pension scheme which in many cases has been the only means of support for the elderly.

We are told that as pensioners die, they are not replaced by others, and the Board has been in discussions about ending the scheme altogether because the CEO has stated publicly that the SSB will be broke in three years if operations continue as they have been.

And to deal with that circumstance of the SSB going broke, the

entity will also be raising contributions paid in by workers and employers to generate more revenues. The quantum of the increase has not yet been finalized, but it is expected to be put in place by early 2018.

The UDP’s politically appointed SSB Chief Executive Officer Colin Young explained argued that the workers’ benefits the SSB has been paying out has been more than the workers contributions for the past 3 years. This shortfall has been growing steadily from $1.5 Million in 2014, to $1.2 Million in 2015, to $3.4 Million in 2016; and is projected to reach $11.4 Million this year. The SSB anticipated to collect $81 Million, but expects to pay out $93.2 Million in benefits.

But for anyone who can read, the SSB’s published financial reports state clearly on page 4: Contributions totalled $80.09 Million, Net Investment income: $26.2 Million, Total Income: $123.9 Million. Among expenditures, Benefits paid out totalled $79.98 Million, and Total operating expenses were $20.5 Million, so Total expenditures were $100 Million, which when compared to the income showed an excess of $23.4 Million over what was spent, and this was up from an excess of $23 Million in 2015! This right there

It is incredible to imagine this entity going broke when it was in such a robust state of health when the UDP took it over. Yet it is a matter of fact that the money held in trust for workers has been used at the whim of the ruling party as a bail-out piggy bank whenever the need arises. Against the advice of the SSB’s actuary, the Board has invested tens of millions of dollars in BTL and BEL since the government took them over. Additionally, we are now told that the SSB will be lending $7M to the Belize Airports Authority, a very lucrative statutory body, for works to be done on the Caye Caulker airstrip.

The BAA, mired in financial scandal after scandal, operates on an operational budget which is said to be more than that of the Ministry of Tourism, and generates handsome revenues. So why is the SSB being tapped to use workers’ monies to bail out the BAA? As a side note, just a point of interest, the BAA has committed to paying the loan out of Rider Fees attached to ticket prices.

Celebrating Mr. Price There is an iconic photo of Mr. Price on a lonely road…bent over listening to a child.

I am not sure if Mr. Price ever revealed the content of that conversation to anyone…however, that image of a leader staring into the face of the future is one that I truly treasure, for it reminds me of what leadership is really about.

The George Price I knew was a man who never allowed himself to have doubts about the future of this nation.

Always an optimist, Mr. Price used words that reminded us of our better selves. He taught us that although small in size and number we could be great. He said that while we were poor, we possessed the capacity and resources to one day become a prosperous nation. And he taught us that we should always be united in the cause of nation building.

This week we are reminded of the day we lost Mr. Price. On the morning of the 19th September, 2011 he died quietly in a hospital bed. Those who were by his side said the Belizean National Anthem was being played in the background. Mr. Price loved to sing the National Anthem because he understood what its words meant.

Arise ye sons of the Baymen’s Clan Put on your armour Clear the Land Drive back the tyrants Let despots flee Land of the Free, by the Carib Sea. These words speak of a revolution, one that is peaceful and constructive. It asks of every Belizean, from the four corners of our nation, to Build Belize. The armour we wear is not to protect us from guns and bombs, but it is the armour of planters and builders. It is the thinking cap our innovators and entrepreneurs wear. It tells us also that we must always be ready to fight for Belize, to rid our society of those who would do harm to our nation, whether they be foreigners or of our own. Our National Anthem proclaims our desire to be one people living in peace with our neighbours and doing our part to make the world a better place for all.

You know, Mr. Price never cared about any of the many awards and titles he received. He always saw himself as a worker - a Christian man of God who woke up every day trying to do the best job he could for his people and for his God. Few nations in this world can boast of having a leader like this. Few independent people can say they fought and gained their independence in a bloodless revolution.

September 19th is declared as National Service Day. It is dedicated to the memory of Mr. Price. Let us all honour his memory by standing up for Belize and by doing right by each other, always keeping in mind that the work he started is far from finished. That work is to build a Belize that works for everyone.

Let us keep the memory of Mr. Price alive by continuing the struggle. God Bless and have a productive week.

Questions to Ministers Would the Member for Queen Square and Minister of Finance please say exactly how much money was misappropriated from the Belize Airports Authority recently, and what steps have been taken to recover that money? Could he also say how the SSB can raise contributions because it is going bankrupt but can still find $7M to lend to the cash-strapped BAA?

Would the Member for Orange Walk East and junior Minister of Police please say if he will instruct the Police to investigate his colleague from Orange Walk North on suspicion of involvement in the execution-style murder of the main witness in the murder trial of Vega’s henchman?

Would the Member for Queen Square and Minister of Natural Resources please say who owns the land in northern Ambergris Caye where the government plans to build a new International Airport? Could he confirm or deny reports that the land is owned by Gaspar Vega or members of his family?

Sorcery…

Check this out. It’s not rocket science. On August 25th, very quietly, Tracy Taegar and Patrick Faber sign what they call a definitive agreement for the Stake Bank cruise port. Two weeks after, on September 8th, to everyone’s surprise, Erwin Contreras and John Saldivar sign what they call an MOU for another cruise port at some unspecified location near the Sibun river-mouth. This one is called Port of Magical Belize, and get this…the MOU talks about a 300 room 5-star hotel and all the attendant amenities including docking facilities for four Oasis class cruise ships. Can you say bullshit? Scam? Puerto Azul? Here’s the thing…the people in the Ministry of Tourism knew about this magical signing the same time we did. They saw it on the news. How do you like them apples?

The players…

The players in this thing are the key. Remember we told you about the cabal which seeks to seize control of Cabinet? I’m old, not senile, and I don’t lie…at least not much.

John Saldivar is a part of that group. Can anybody explain why the Minister of Defence is signing an MOU for a cruise port?

Gulab Sharma is another player in Magical Belize. Anybody remember that name? He was made Chair of the KHMH in 2011 before he and the PM reportedly went crossway. You mention the name Gulab Sharma anywhere right now and people say shady pharmaceutical scam artist from the Free Zone – just automatically that is what they say. So how did Sharma turn cruise port magnate? Well, I don’t know that he is, but I do know that he is one of Minister Pablo Marin’s financiers. See the link? The move to seize power in the UDP is real, people. Montero, Gapi, Contreras, Saldivar and Pablo Marin. Remember me when it happens. There’s some serious money moving right now, and if you really believe Belize is getting any top shelf cruise port by the Sibun, the wart on my left testicle is still for sale.

Extra protection…

At news time tonight, there are credible reports that the Deputy Prime Minister has approached the Police to ask for extra-protection – and I don’t mean another box of the extra-petite Trojans he favours. Seems that while he was under the sauce he may have told Zenaida some very unpleasant things during a meeting they had. From past experience we know that the boy gets boisterous and spunky when under the influence, like a lil Floyd Mayweather type even – with women, of course. But Zenaida is no ordinary woman. So after sobering up, he realized what he did and said and sources close to him tell us that he’s been jumping at shadows ever since…

Fun and joke aside though…this cynical old scribe has been told that the Special Branch has been asked very discreetly to review and upgrade security protocols where the Deputy Prime Minister is concerned. We are told that they are taking very seriously the situation between Gaspar Vega and Faber. No lie. See, if you believe that goofy retarded looking guy smiling at the Pope, wife in hand, is a nice guy, you would be dead wrong…emphasis on the dead. Get it? If you saw the Deputy in Orange Walk a couple weeks ago, you would have noticed the increased security. And since the execution of the witness in that murder thing in Orange Walk involving Gapi’s right hand, you best believe Faber has ramped up his 24/7 personal protection detail. And that’s all I’m going to say about that.

So remember we told you about Dylan Reneau, former NTUCB President and Ministry of Education staffer being transferred with extreme prejudice? Well here’s the story.

From what we’re hearing, Faber was trying to get the Ministry to pay for his Collet junket to Hopkins the other day – after all since Petrocaribe is done the taxpayers might as well foot the bill, right? So Dylan reportedly went to the Prime Minister to complain about Faber wanting to use the special vote to pay for the 22 buses. He allegedly got the shock of his life when the PM threw him under all 22 buses and allegedly told Faber that he took too long to transfer him. This is a fitting end for Reneau who ascended into power on the coat-tails of the UDP and now is considered persona non grata in the party because his usefulness has come to an end. The End. Amber Alert…

Friends of Oj Elrington, all two of them, are deeply concerned following a post on Facebook this week which dealt a deadly blow to the semi-literate, totally incoherent primary school level mail-order attorney. Seems he was running off his figurative mouth on social media when BAM, out of the blue he insulted the wrong woman. Of course he tried to match wits with her – BIG MISTAKE. Maybe he should have stuck to his usual method and used his fists – at least we hear that’s how he usually deals with women. Anyway, but back to the Amber Alert. It’s not for Oj actually. It’s for his balls. Seems they’ve been missing since that encounter on Facebook. If you’ve seen the little devils around anywhere you know what to do.

EDITORIAL HIP HIP HURRAY…!

I

n the month of September, we celebrate many things. This is the month of patriotism and pride, of unity and freedom from colonialism and oppression. In September we hoist the red, white and blue to boast of our Independence as a free, sovereign land - thirty-six years and counting.

We decorate our homes and play songs which pay tribute to bravery in a glorious battle, and our hearts swell with pride as we march to the beat of our own drums…this land is my land, this land is your land – land of the free by the Carib Sea where we tolerate no tyrants and chase away despots as we nurture and protect the wealth untold with which we have been blessed.

But as we prepare to raise the flag on our thirty-sixth year of young nationhood, it is surely time to reflect on where we have come, and on where we are going.

We joyously proclaim our territorial integrity, all 8867 square miles of it, but just weeks ago we were informed by the Foreign Minister of Belize, Wilfred Elrington, that we are all mistaken. We were told that contrary to what we have believed, our borders are not internationally recognized. Elrington further enlightened Belizeans, claiming that when it comes to Guatemala’s claim on Belize, not one nation would side with us.

This is why, said the Foreign Minister, we must go to the International Court of Justice so that if we are victorious, our borders will finally be recognized. Elrington said all that, and repeated it, lamenting the ignorance of Belizeans because all this while we thought that this 8867 was ours, ironclad. Mr. Barrow has not challenged the statement by his Foreign Minister, despite being called on to do so. In fact, not one UDP Minister has challenged Elrington’s insane assertion.

We celebrate our freedom this month, too, but freedom from what? We are not free from poverty. Venezuela gifted Belize with hundreds of millions of dollars to help the poor. Mr. Barrow spent close to $400M in just three years, from 2012-2015, and more Belizeans are poor today than they were then. Close to half of our population exists on or below the poverty line. And poverty enslaves us every bit as effectively as shackles.

We are not free from oppression. The entire country watched last week as the Barrow administration used its Police force to brutally quell a small, peaceful demonstration on Tower Hill Bridge. We watched as the Special Patrol Unit, under the command of Assistant Commissioner of Police Edward Broaster and Inspector Aaron Gamboa acted like rabid, untrained dogs. We watched the Leader of the constitutionally appointed Opposition of Belize thrown to the ground and dragged

by Police. We watched other persons who were demonstrating, including members of Parliament, roughed up and thrown to the ground by Police. We saw members of the media attacked and roughed up by Police, and they were only doing their jobs, covering the event. We watched as Inspector Gamboa grabbed Marisol Amaya from behind as she called in a live report, picking her up and throwing her to the ground where she was dragged to the side of the road by four SPU officers. We saw the Police tear-gas the leader of the Opposition and media personnel who were conducting an interview AFTER the road had already been cleared. We saw Police tear-gas innocent civilians who were not a part of the demonstration, AFTER the road had been cleared. It was madness, a frenzy.

And what was even crazier, is that the Minister with responsibility for Police, Elodio Aragon Jr., had no apology to give. In a press conference the day after, he seemed to be praising the Police for a job well done. ACP Broaster sat by Aragon’s side. His contribution was that at least they cleared the road without any bones being broken. Is there any wonder that the Police Officers under their command behave the way they do?

We are not free from corruption. Far from it. In fact, it seems that we celebrate corruption. Last week, even as the Police broke up what they called an illegal gathering on the Tower Hill Bridge with batons and guns and tear gas, they blocked off a road in Orange Walk so that they could facilitate an illegal gathering in front of Gaspar Vega’s house. Vega has allegedly perpetrated the most worthless crimes on Belizeans.

As Minister of Natural Resources he robbed public coffers to enrich himself and his family members. He orchestrated schemes in which he and his family members gained access to thousands of acres of prime property in Belize. The evidence is there. But in Belize, today, instead of the Police investigating Vega and working to put him behind bars, they instead are put to protect him, and to keep he and his family safe and secure.

The theme for September speaks about challenges and triumphs and resolve. This year, as we face the challenges of a corrupt, abusive and inept Barrow administration which has sickened our democracy, let us renew our resolve to fight against oppression and corruption and injustice at every turn. And if we count triumphs, let them be triumphs of the people and not triumphs of the rich and corrupt who govern us for their own purposes.

Elrington dijo todo eso y lo repitió, lamentando la ignorancia de los Beliceños ya que todo este tiempo creíamos que todo estas 8867 eran nuestras irrefutablemente. El Sr. Barrow no ha desafiado la declaración hecha por su Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores, a pesar de ser llamado a hacerlo. De hecho, ni un Ministro UDP ha desafiado la afirmación demente de Elrington.

También Celebramos nuestra libertad este mes, ¿pero libertad de qué? No estamos libres de la pobreza. Venezuela le ha proporcionado cientos de millones de dólares a Belice para ayudar a los pobres. El Sr. Barrow gastó cerca de $400 M en sólo tres años, del 2012-2015, y más Beliceños son pobres hoy en día de lo que eran entonces. Cerca de la mitad de nuestra población vive en o por debajo de la línea de pobreza. Y la pobreza nos esclaviza tan eficazmente como las cadenas.

No estamos libres de la opresión. Todo el país vio cómo la semana pasada la administración de Barrow utilizo su fuerza policíaca para reprimir brutalmente una manifestación pequeña, pacífica en el puente de Tower Hill. Observamos como la Unidad Especial de Patrulla (SPU por sus siglas en inglés), bajo el mando del Comisionado Asistente de policía Edward Broaster y el Inspector Aaron Gamboa operar como perros rabiosos, inexpertos. Observamos como el Líder de la Oposición designado por la Constitución de Belice, fue tirado al suelo y arrastrado por la policía. Vimos a otras personas que protestaban, incluyendo a Miembros del Parlamento, maltratados y arrojados al suelo por la policía. Vimos como los miembros de los Medios de Comunicación fueron atacados y maltratados por la policía, que sólo estaban haciendo su trabajo, cubriendo el evento. Observamos como el Inspector Gamboa agredió a Marisol Amaya por detrás mientras llamaba haciendo un reportaje en vivo, luego recogiéndola y tirándola al suelo donde fue arrastrada hacia el lado de la carretera por cuatro funcionarios de la SPU. Vimos como la policía le tiro gases lacrimógenos al Líder de la Oposición y al personal de los Medios de Comunicación que conducían una entrevista después de que el camino había sido despejado. Vimos como la policía le tiro gases lacrimógenos a civiles inocentes que no eran parte de la manifestación, después de que el camino había sido despejado.

Era una locura, un frenesí.

Y lo que fue aún más loco, es que el Ministro responsable de la policía, Elodio Aragón Jr., no pidió disculpas. En una conferencia de prensa al día siguiente, parecía estar alabando a la policía por un trabajo bien hecho. El Comisionado de Policía Asistente Broaster se sentó al lado de Aragón. Su contribución fue que al menos se despejó el camino sin ningún hueso roto. ¿Es de extrañar que los oficiales de policía bajo su mando se comportan así?

No estamos libres de la corrupción. Lejos de ello. De hecho, parece que celebramos la corrupción. La semana pasada, aun cuando la policía disolvió lo que llamaron una reunión ilegal sobre el puente de Tower Hill con bastones y armas de fuego y gas lacrimógeno, bloquearon una carretera en Orange Walk para facilitar una reunión ilegal delante de la casa de Gaspar Vega. Vega supuestamente ha perpetrado los crímenes más despreciables hacia los Beliceños. Como Ministro de Recursos Naturales robó las arcas públicas para enriquecerse a sí mismo y a sus familiares. Orquestó esquemas en los que él y miembros de su familia ganaron acceso a miles de acres de propiedades principales en Belice. La evidencia está allí. Pero en Belice, hoy en día, en lugar que la policía este investigando a Vega y trabajando para ponerlo tras las rejas, al contrario los ponen para protegerlos para que él y su familia estén salvo y seguros.

El tema para este septiembre habla de retos y triunfos y determinación. Este año, al enfrentar los retos de una administración Barrow corrupta, abusiva e inepta que ha enfermado nuestra democracia, renovemos nuestra determinación de luchar contra la opresión y la corrupción y la injusticia a cada momento. Y si contamos los triunfos que sean triunfos del pueblo y no los triunfos de los ricos y corruptos que nos gobiernan para sus propios fines.

Dangerous Explosive Found in Corozal

Thursday, 14 September 2017 In an atmosphere dominated by political and social tension, the discovery of an unfinished but very dangerous explosive in Corozal cannot be welcome news. And it gets even worse, since the device found turned out to be a remote one, with the ability to be detonated from a distance by telephone – the first of its kind seen in Belize and one which has been made famous in acts of terrorism. In other war-torn parts of the world, explosives like this one are used in extreme terrorist threats, and mass casualties are often the objective.

In this particular case, the device was found on Saturday evening, September 9, in Corozal Town, where a civilian reportedly handed the apparatus over to Police. The BDF were called in to retrieve it, and Commander David Jones inspected it. Jones was gravely concerned over the obvious escalation of threat to public safety.

He told the press that from his careful observation, the device was only missing two things which would have turned it from harmless to lethal, those being the detonator, and the explosives. What was actually handed over was essentially an unfinished bomb with electrical wiring to configure it to explode remotely.

It had careful wiring such as capacitor, a sensor and cellular phone attached to it.

Describing it, General Jones told the press, “…It is definitely someone attempting to make a sophisticated improvised explosive device or a more sophisticated bomb which would be the first that we've seen being constructed in Belize… the person who was trying to construct the device would do it in mind that he would just probably dial the cell number for the phone and it would set the device off, which means he would do it remotely.”

The BDF commander is hoping that the Corozal police are taking this potential threat to public safety very seriously, and that an intensive investigation will be carried out to determine the origin of this device and possibly the bomb-maker’s identity. So far Police, strangely enough, seem to be handling the matter very casually, releasing very few details on the device’s discovery. They opted only to respond briefly to an inquiry from the press, by confirming that it was discovered over the Carnival weekend. This is the third explosive found for the month of September.

UDP SEPTEMBER 10TH FIASCO Thursday, 14 September 2017 Words truly cannot describe the scandalous scene that unfolded on Sunday, September 10th at the Memorial Park in Belize City, as former UDP Belize City Mayor Zenaida Moya dug in her heels (or in this case, slippers, complete with informal wear and unkempt hair) and - with a disgruntled sneer plastered across her face - crowned a second person as Queen of the Bay. Prime Minister Dean Barrow and his wife, the Special Envoy for Women and Children were both among the crowd and could not help but descend into mocking laughter at Zenaida. They failed to grasp that the joke was on them as a Party which cannot even get a Queen of the Bay pageant and coronation right for the UDP’s emblematic holiday.

Once again, Belize had become the laughing stock of the world as the national embarrassment was witnessed by members of the diplomat-

ic corps who were expecting pomp and circumstance, but instead got a taste of acrimony and discomfort that kept getting worse by the minute.

The hot mess goes back to the night of September 2nd when the National Queen of the Bay Pageant was held. A member of the Orange Walk Committee claims to have seen two judges changing their scores so that Miss Stann Creek could win. They would later claim that this was promptly reported to Zenaida as pageant coordinator but she reportedly did nothing to set things right. As a result, Miss Orange Walk, Esmeralda Cal placed second.

Her committee challenged the results plunging Belize into a comic and suspenseful brouhaha for the entire 10th holiday weekend.

2017 The showdown included a face-off between Zenaida and the Chairman of the National Celebrations Commission, no other than the (dis)Honorable Patrick Faber. Apparently in an attempt to salvage the situation, Faber called Zenaida to a meeting but when all was said and done, both accused each other of disrespectful behavior and stuck to their respective positions. That of course culminated in the embarrassing display on Sunday. Both sides were too arrogant, bull-headed and eager to embarrass each other to put country before self. To save face and explain her side of the story, Zenaida publicly accused the Deputy Prime Minister of being drunk and disrespectful, belligerent and repetitive. Faber for his part wrote on social media, "Ms. Stann Creek will be crowned as the new Queen of the Bay 2017 tomorrow.

Queen of the Bay coordinator, Zenaida Moya was disrespectful and left the meeting without providing the right evidence that supported a queen other than Miss Stann Creek to take the crown tomorrow!" And the rest, of course, is history.

Faber will try to restore a semblance of a reputation by threatening to sue Zenaida while the strong-willed Zee who thought she was making a principled stand is discredited from running after behaving questionably and being fired on live TV for the world to see. Only in Belize…only under the UDP.

MONTERO ‘JACKS’ FARMERS IN BUENA VISTA

Wednesday, 13 September 2017 Many farmers in Cayo have lost their land to the greed of Cabinet ministers cancelling and personally acquiring land as if it were a profitable private business. Associates of Cabinet Ministers are all too familiar with the signing of papers in their names, or in their capacities as Justice of the peace. In the Cayo District, Cayo Central area representative Rene Montero allegedly has dibs on this business. Many farmers in Buena Vista Village, Cayo are victims of his greed and have lost their farming land to Montero. According to the farmers, lands that were designated and granted to them by government for planting and farming have been abruptly cancelled. According to reports, a block of land approximately more than three hundred acres in total was has been cancelled by government and now belongs to Minister of Works Rene Montero.

In an interview with the Belize Times, Luis Osorio, one of the farmers affected explained that after living on the land for six years, planting fruit trees and raising cattle and other animals, he moved a bit more into the village when his wife got ill but continued taking care of his land. Osorio told us that one day he was informed that machines were cleaning the land. He said that he immediately went to the Lands Department to inquire what happened and there they informed him that the land was already owned by Montero.

“We went to two people, we went to ask them about what happened because they were pulling lines, they were cleaning the place with machinery, and we went to ask and the first person that was in the office told us that we can apply.

He told me to go and get the map of the place where the lands are located and we went. Then when we took the map, the man looked at it and look at the place and told us this place, this land does not belong to you, it belongs to Mr. Montero. He then told us we cannot apply for any land there because it all belongs to Montero. All the machines there working the land are the machines from the government and are now serving Montero. They are cleaning and fixing all the land there. This is an injustice to me because that land cost all of us to work it and clean it and now to have them take it away from us just like that,” an angry Osorio told us.

Osorio says that he sees it as a complete injustice to all the farmers who lost their land because they need their land to survive. “It is unfair because we as farmers, we need the land to work. They took away fifty acres from me alone and we had thirty acres of grass with fencing because there were some animals there and now that they cleaned it and took it away, they destroyed everything. I think that we as citizens deserve a piece of land to work, farmers need the land and they just

came and took it all without even telling us. We found out when we saw all the big machinery there cleaning all that land.” According to the farmers, Montero outright denied the allegations when they confronted him about the situation. However, the officer at the Lands Department had confirmed to the group of farmers that all the land was now the property of Montero. They also told us that they personally saw when Montero would arrive in the village taking in workers to work on his land.

Since Montero got into government, he has allegedly secured thousands of acres of lands for himself, his family and close associated on Hicks Caye, Bannister Caye, Pine Ridge and Yalbac among others.

TITANS & MAHOGANY MASQUERADERS Win 2017 Carnival Road March

Belize City, September 9, 2017 The Titans Mas senior band and the Mahogany Masqueraders junior band won their respective divisions of the 2017 Carnival road march competition in Belize City last Saturday. Carnival commissioner Stanley Lizama led the road march, now in its 42nd year. The bands won points for their costume durability, their colour creativity and carnival spirit. They also got points for their mass camp inspections held before carnival.

Titans took 1st prize with 595pts, presenting the theme "Celebration of Life. Titans’ King had also got 1108 pts in the Carnival King competition the week before to claim the $3,500 2nd prize for senior King.

Mother Nature's Creations took 2nd prize among the senior bands with 538 points, led by their Queen Conch - Whitney Swift, who got 1014 pts to claim the $2,500 3rd prize in the senior Queen contest. King Ockro - Raheem Martinez and “Prince Malo of Earth and Sky” – Leroy Green led other sections of the group.

Defending champs Soca Moca Carnival Band took 3rd prize with 523pts in the road march, led by “Queen Leela Vernon” – Pauline Bradley, who won the $3,500 2nd prize for Senior Queen with 1073 pts, while their “King Gonji” – George Parks won 1,100pts to take the $2,500 3rd prize for Senior King.

Belizean Jewels Carnival Band was the last band in the road march and did not win any prizes; but no matter, they had swept top honours for Senior King and Queen the week before when “Queen Avanti” Kadejah Tun twerked and jammed to get 1105 pts and the $5,000 1st prize. “King Oris” – Kyle Harris costume earned 1,140 pts to take the $5,000 1st prize.

In the Juniors division, the Mahogany Masqueraders won 1st prize with 563.5 pts. In the Junior Queen and King competition the week before, “Queen Rushana” Kimari Cacho strutted her stuff to tally 978 pts and win the $3,000 2nd prize, while “King Chatoyer” - Myrick Caliz won 1043 pts and the $3,000 2nd prize.

The 70 dancers of the Black Pearl band won 2nd prize 559pts; led by Queen “Goddess of the North Star” - Robyn Cuthkelvin who got 951pts in the Junior Queen competition to win the $2,000 3rd prize.

“King Liza” – Cameron Kelly got 983pts to also win the $2,000 3rd prizes for Junior King.

Trench Town Masqueraders won 3rd prize with 494 pts, proof of their enduring Carnival spirit in the face of adversity, as their band leader Patricia Flowers’ house had burned down earlier this year.

The defending champs Jump Street Posse did not win any prizes in the road march, but never mind, they had topped the Junior King and Queen contest at Marion Jones the week before! Kalisha Mckoy was in her 4th Carnival, and with Kalisha dancing and gyrating with all her youthful energy in her “Queen Sheera” costume, earned 1030 pts from the judges to take home the top prize: $4,000! Kalisha explained that her costume portrays the Goddess Sheera of the Samburu tribe, protecting the warriors of the jungle.

Jump Street Posse’s director Marina Welcome could not control her emotions when her “King Jaws” 13-year-old Jaheem Dougal earned 1078 pts to also win the $4,000 1st prize.

The other junior bands included Caribbean Treasures, who were not competing, the Collet Royal Revellers, the Sunshine Masqueraders, and Soca Massive Juniors. Other senior bands included Belizeans United, and the Fantasy Karnival Belize, led by their Queen Shadene Ottley in her Queen Ixhel costume.

The Pantempters steel band, now 25-years-old, punctuated the interval between the junior and senior sections of the parade the Junior and Seniors of the parade, jamming out lively Carnival rhythms.

STANDING UP FOR MS. AMAYA

I read with interest the Editorial in this past weekend's Amandala, discussing as it did the cause celebre involving the heinous mistreatment of journalist Marisol Amaya during the fracas in Orange Walk and the overreaction of the security forces. Of course we can have no doubt that Ms. Amaya was targeted and singled out for attack. God forbid that the baton would have made contact with her as she was on her knees after being slammed down by the one Gamboa.

I couldn't help noticing and reading twice the statement in the Editorial that “a leading official of the PUP, a prominent women's activist, attacked KREM Radio in the PUP newspaper for not standing up for Marisol.” At first I wasn't certain, but on reflection I realized that the Editorial could only have been referring to yours truly. I went back to my computer files and re-read my entry of June this year called “The Yellow Factor.” And yes indeed, I had called out Amandala/KREM. I do not think that I attacked them, but I did express my disappointment that her organization did not do more to encourage her to press charges against her attacker, Yellowman, an operative of the UDP, and a callous and facey one at that. I am glad that they were paying attention.

Let me say that I am not a leading official of the PUP. I am not in the party's executive, nor do I play any official role at all in my party. I would confess that I am considered a women's activist, and I hope that I would always be so, but certainly not paid or professional. I can safely say that my column for the Belize Times I write on a completely voluntary basis. Not one copper do I receive from anyone, not for my writing nor for my pastime of being a Jazz deejay. I do both because I enjoy them. I do recall by way of gratitude and reminiscing that back in the early days, I did receive a small stipend from Mr. C.B. Hyde and Evan X Hyde for my fuel when I went to KREM Radio for “Jazz Expressions.” And I will always be thankful to them for providing the opportunity for me to share the

music.

Much condemnation should continue about the cowardly and dastardly attack on Ms. Amaya. I believe that her first line of support and defence are surely her media colleagues and the organization with whom she practises her profession. And we have to raise our voices that this kind of thing cannot continue. The Police and security forces must not be brutal or heavy-handed in any way, not in a free country, as we supposedly are. And I could not agree more that political bosses have no business directing the security forces and telling them what to do and who to attack. Let me add that if there were any perceived hypocrisy on the part of anyone in the earlier response to the attack on Ms. Amaya, particularly from government quarters, then we all have work to do in making the right moves to defend and to support her. No one is above criticism, not activists not the media, and all of us have to have broad shoulders to accept such criticism when it is warranted so that we can do better.

I do feel strongly that this time Ms. Amaya should fully press charges, defend herself and go all the way in seeking vindication and compensation for the horrible assault on her person. I believe too that it cannot be wrong for Belizeans on a whole, activist or not, to expect her colleagues and her organization to lead the charge with her in this regard.

We MUST add our voices to those of condemnation of what happened to Ms. Amaya and those of unwavering support for journalists' freedom to go about their duties unhindered, unimpeded and not afraid. As the PUP say Enough is Enough of the corruption, so we all need to make it clear that Enough is Enough of brute force and ignorance by those in power and those who control the security forces. Instead of making platitudes in defence, the authorities need to throw the book at Mr. Gamboa and at any uniformed person who mistreats any member of the public.

Standing up for Ms. Amaya is standing up for freedom and democracy if we hold these precious.

Culture of Apathy

This week I was going to write about Police Officers who get ahead through testicular fortitude, and by testicular fortitude I mean their steadfast and focused devotion to their political bosses’ testicles. But I figure enough has been said about the events of last week. No, I’m really not frigging happy about what happened. If I were a ninja warrior or a trained mercenary and not a fat, aging, dilapidated old scribe with a heart that screams daily for ease, I would have done away with those stupidly aggressive horses’ asses in an instant.

Seriously, though, I want to teargas Sedi right in the face so that he can share some of the enjoyment. I don’t think it’s fair that the media have all the fun, as we did last Wednesday.

I couldn’t sleep that night as I relived the euphoria of retching up bile and gasping for air while on my knees. Oh glory. I want to do it all over again and again and again – but with Sedi beside me.

Then I wanted to wrote about Gapi, because I’ve found, strangely enough, that I have something against Ministers who use their power to rob and steal from people so they and their families can get rich. Who’d have thunk it? Gapi is like this demented Robin Hood who got it all wrong. He steals from the poor to give to the rich. Stellar fellow that, says Mr. Barrow. I have this image in my head of Dean Oliver practically in tears when he announced last October that Gapi had resigned. All that was left was for him to ask us all to observe a minute of silence. I swear these politicians kill me. But speaking of kill, I decided not to write about Gapi this week because of the guy who saw when Gapi’s right hand, Hilmar Alamilla, murdered Daniel Sosa. This weekend that witness was shot in the head by an unidentified person and died shortly after. So I decided maybe I shouldn’t write about Gapi and his wutless, crooked, thieving self this week.

So I thought I would write about

Zenaida and Patrick Faber, because this week’s drama was just too sweet for words. You know what stuck with me through all this? Zenaida says that she was called into a meeting with Patrick, who was clearly drunk. She says Patrick was asking the same questions over and over and started shouting at her, and she was afraid because she remembered that he had assaulted his ex-wife and girlfriend (Z says she got that from the horse’s mouth) and she wasn’t in that meeting to get punched or beat up. Hell yeah it sounded hilarious, and I’d bet anything Zenaida could kick Patrick’s ass in a fair fight.

But it’s not funny, really. This Deputy Prime Minister is a man who is known to get drunk and beat up women. He is on record for beating up his current girlfriend, punching her in the head and dragging her. And he is on public record for continuously abusing, physically and emotionally, his ex-wife. And when the evidence came out not one organization which says they protect women had a thing to say.

See, in my opinion, the Office of the Special Envoy is a joke. The National Women’s Commission, if that’s what it’s called, is a joke. You’re either in it to protect women all the time, or you can just get the hell out. This isn’t about profiling. This can’t be about encouraging women to speak out only when their abuser isn’t a high-ranking member of the UDP to whose bandwagon you have attached yourself. Okay, so I figured I wouldn’t write about this because it gets me too worked up and the tear gas already screwed up my poor heart.

So browsing through Facebook I saw my friend Osmany post about a culture of mediocrity. My immediate response was that if there was any culture we as Belizeans could boast about, it would indeed be a culture of mediocrity. But it is more than that.

What we have is a culture of apathy.

We have been turned, for the most part, into sheeple. On Facebook, we are revolutionaries and fighters to rival Che Guevara and the Transporter, even Rambo though he’s old now.

But in real life we meekly sit and murmur not while the Barrow administration has its way with us. I guess just like how Sedi said the media enjoyed being brutalized by the Police, all us sheeple enjoy being taken for a ride. Mein that’s just sad. I won’t write about this either. Too depressing.

Over the weekend we witnessed the utter embarrassment and public disgrace which was the national 10th of September ceremony in Belize City.

That debacle should never have happened and the organizers owe the nation an apology. Further to that, the organizers also owe an apology to all the young women involved in the pageant for this ridiculous mess. To think that on one of our very important patriotic days this month, in front of invited guests and dignitaries from the region we became a laughing stock is unacceptable.

But what that debacle brought to the fore is something even more troubling. As a people, I have never seen us so divided. The controversy over the crown sparked off a heated and unpleasant debate which still wages on in social media and on the streets even as I write this. I have seen posts insulting everyone involved from Zenaida Moya to the Deputy Prime Minister and even the young women who became unwittingly involved in this mess. I understand there is even a song originating in the South where the crown ended up, making fun of the pageant organizers. It bothers me that we are so quick to jump into the midst of negative things and to wage petty wars which only divide us more, at a time when we should be united as one.

But it gets even worse.

Currently there is another battle being waged, and it is over the annual Pan Yaad which is traditionally held in Belize City.

I understand that a decision has been made to hold a similar event in Belmopan at the same time, and it has triggered off all kinds of tremors. The comments, insults, derogatory remarks and petty taunts have come fast and furious, and perhaps I should not be surprised.

But I am disappointed. Is this what we have come to as a people? Are we so fractured that we fight over such trivial things? Where is our sense of

unity as a people?

I saw the same sort of thing reflected on social media during the recent airings of the popular KTV show. I know we all had our favourites, but it seemed that many people tuned in just to insult and cast the most unbelievable and unacceptable slurs at the participants. I could not help but be amazed at how willing we are as a people to bring down others. We should be lifting up each other. We constantly hear about being our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers, but we aren’t doing that.

It is time that we sit down as individuals and reflect on our own actions. Are we being men and women for others? It is the month of September, and we are proud to say that we are all Belizeans, that we are one people, united and strong. But we are not. Not really.

We are too judgmental of others, for one thing. We are too willing to bring down others. We dismiss the hurt we cause when our words and actions humiliate others. We are careless and irresponsible with the feelings of others. We need to do much better than that before we can truly say that we are one people, united and strong.

My friends, let us really try to be different. I am tired of hearing these themes of unity and strength and then to see us tearing each other down every day. It is not enough for us to march hand in hand on one day, waving our flags proudly, and then do things which will hurt others.

September is a time for patriotism. And we all consider ourselves patriots. Today I ask you all to think about what it means to be patriotic.

It is not only about standing at attention when the anthem is played or sung. It is not only about clasping hand on chest when the Belizean flag is raised. It is not about decorating your homes in red, white and blue and playing September songs.

Patriotism is born in the heart. And it means that we have love for our land – real love for our Belize and real love for our Belizean people.

Let us be more tolerant and kind and patriotic, and let this really be a September that we can all remember with pride and joy.

HOT BED OF CORRUPTION In a meeting with the Belizean diaspora as was reported in October 2013, the Prime Minister made the famous remarks that the Lands Department is a hotbed of corruption.

Minister Gaspar Vega was relieved of his position as Minister of Lands and since 2013 the Minister has been changed several times. The UDP government just doesn’t seem to be able to arrest or even address the problem properly.

The UDP government through its delayed responses or lack of responses would wish the people of Belize to just forget it. Now, under Minister of State, Carla Barnett, the government would wish for all Belizeans to focus on fixing the system. That is not leadership. Yes, the system must be fixed.

Politics must be taken out of land distribution and real checks and balances must be put in place. But persons, no matter if they were former Ministers or former Deputy Prime Ministers, must be held accountable. Last year the government announced through the then Attorney General Vanessa Retreage that there would be an investigation into land compensation and the report would be completed by the end of the year. Where is that report? Was it even done? Minister of State Carla Barnett, in the July Senate meeting appears to plead ignorance. How convenient for someone who, like Minister Godwin Hulse, once aggressively and adamantly fought against corruption.

Accountability can start by doing a proper investigation. It is clear that Barrow and his Cabinet are not serious about it. Belizeans are not fools. They have seen this circus before under Barrow where he promises (after coming under pressure) to do many things but really does nothing. He promised the Public Accounts Committee meetings would be heard publicly but now the government says they won’t. He promised a functional Integrity Commission but now it has been demonstrated as dysfunctional with no interest in following the law of having Ministers declare their assets from the time they were in Government. He promised that fuel would not go up and now it is at its highest levels with government sending out a press release that it will go even higher. He promised a Senate Select Committee to look into the Auditor General’s report on Immigration Department but now declares he will not give it more than 3 more months to complete because he has no money. Yet, he has money for all manner of

things that do not address the hotbed of corruption that has engulfed not just the Ministry of Lands but his entire government.

Many women joined the March against Corruption on Wednesday, September 6th 2017. The United Women’s Group of the PUP salutes all women who protested on that fateful Wednesday. It is September 6th 2017 that showed the UDP government’s ugly side. They operate with brute force against their citizens and against a woman journalist who was not protesting but only doing her job. A very slippery slope. It was that Wednesday that demonstrated to all that it is not law and order that the Minister of Police is interested in. Beating persons into submission and suppressing the media from exposing the truth is not the image any Belizean should be pleased with. The UWG denounces the abuse of power and in the most strongest of terms violence against women.

This is the month of Belize’s Independence. At the age of 36, Belize finds itself confronting serious corruption in several departments, incompetence and mismanagement at the highest levels and a Prime Minister of this country who tolerates it and enables it by not taking the necessary steps to curb it. The very things he fought against when he was in opposition, when he called for civil disobedience, are the very things he allows to occur rampantly in his government.

Impunity reigns supreme under the Barrow government.

In that meeting with the Belizean diaspora in October 2013, it was reported that Prime Minister Barrow also had a message for the unions in Belize. He stated that the unions in Belize should not only focus on salary increases but on many other issues impacting the country. The United Women’s Group agrees with him on that and continues to salute all unions and organizations who call out the hypocrisy and corruption under the Barrow government. It is a challenge, not only for unions to address, but for all Belizeans, no matter party colors, to stand up and march against corruption.

Determine the party you want to govern in the voting booth. Stand up and march against corruption every day no matter which party is in government.

ADDRESS BY: MAYOR KEVIN BERNARD SEPTEMBER 10, 2017

Government Representatives, representatives of the Opposition, Military officials from here at home and those sharing this occasion with us, Ambassadors, distinguished guests, colleagues and friends…it is a distinct pleasure to welcome you to Orange Walk this afternoon as we celebrate the 10th day of September together.

That long ago battle of 1798, when British settlers and their slaves defended this land we now call Belize against the Spaniards, has always served as a symbolic clarion call to unity for us Belizeans. The actual engagement may have lasted only two hours, but that legacy of standing together to protect our land against all invasions, against all threats, against all oppression and injustice will last forever. Even as I welcome you to our beautiful town today, that is the message I want you to take with you when you go.

Today we are faced with the external threat posed by Guatemala, and instead of uniting us as a people in the defence of our land, we are more divided than ever. We once took for granted the territorial integrity of this land we and so many generations before us have called home, but now there seems to be some doubt about our borders which we now hear are not internationally recognized. We are officially members of the Commonwealth and Caricom and the United Nations, but there is confusion about the existence of our borders. My friends, this is no time for confusion. This is no time for mixed messages. This is no time to be showing weakness in the face of a very real threat. Like those few brave souls centuries ago, slaves and settlers together, we must unite to protect what is ours, with every ounce of our being and with everything that we are.

And today, we are also faced with other threats,

and we must defend Belize against those internal threats just as passionately. As a people, we are too divided politically, and we must find a way to bridge that gap. So many of the issues which face us, face us as Belizeans – all of us – but we fight them as PUP or UDP. That must stop. Poverty affects all of us regardless of political affiliation, and today we are no closer to finding a solution. Crime affects all of us, regardless of political affiliation, and today, we are certainly no closer to finding a solution. Corruption affects all of us, regardless of political affiliation, and we all know where we are when it comes to corruption. My friends, the truth is that unless we stand together to deal with these issues across political lines, ten years from now we will be facing the same challenges and saying the same things.

We sing songs about a glorious battle, and about the Baymen, valiant and bold. That’s fine, but the reality that we need to keep with us is that settlers and their slaves stood together in one fight for one purpose. And that purpose was the protection of this land. What they did that day, whether it was a real battle or just an engagement, whether it lasted two hours or two days or two years…is the reason we are here today. That is what we must keep close to our hearts.

As we celebrate the 10th day of September together, let us resolve to confront our challenges, TOGETHER. Let us celebrate triumphs which build up ALL our people, protect and defend our rights regardless of who we support politically, and build a Belize that works for everyone. And let us renew our resolve to fight against the things which divide us, break us down as a people and stunt the growth of our nation.

I welcome you once again, and wish all of us a Happy 10th Day of September.

MOVE The Time for Change is NOW!

San Pedro held its endorsement convention on Thursday September 7th to present their PUP 7 slate for the upcoming March 2018 Town Council elections. It was immediately clear that this PUP 7 was packing a punch like heavyweights with the massive crowd that attended the event and for good reason.

From their attendance it was clear that the youth of our town are happy about this young, energetic and diverse team, not to mention the fact that there are four women on the slate, which is unprecedented.

The team is made up of Dianelli Aranda, Johnnia Duarte, Dina Graniel and Marina Kay, along with Ruben Navidad, Ian Pou and Mayoral Hopeful none other than well-known businessman Andre Perez.

The meeting started off with speakers Chairman Henry Charles, Hon, Joe Mai, Mayor Kevin Bernard of Orange Walk, Senator Valerie Woods and Hon Kareem Musa. All speakers were impressed and pleased with the PUP 7 and the crowd they were able to draw. The PUP 7 clearly embodies youthfulness, diversity, gender balance and experience.

Mayor Bernard spoke of his confidence in mayoral hopeful Andre Perez who is a well known successful businessman who is more than qualified to rescue the present Town Council that is in complete shambles financially. He warned that the San Pedro PUP 7 was about to inherit the same scenario his PUP 7 inherited six years ago in Orange Walk. However, he made it clear that San Pedro has the PUP 7 as a clear choice.

Hon Kareem Musa did not waste time either but immediately warned Danny Guerrero that he better start running cause Andre and his young dynamic team were coming for him and his clueless 6 councillors. He went on to sound the alarm that the PUP 7 was up against not only the corrupt UDP but also up against the uneven and heavily padded voters list that the UDP bring every election.

Mayoral hopeful Andre Perez committed that the PUP 7 will work as one united team, as opposed to the present UDP council where the Mayor is the only one who makes decisions without consulting his clueless councillors. Perez went on to pledge that upon being elected, his PUP 7 promises to pave the remaining 9 or so miles of streets in the different neighbourhoods.

It is clear that the PUP in San Pedro is set to win the elections next march which will rock not only ambergris Caye but the nation on a whole ending 15 years of dominance of the corrupt UDP.

Angry Woman

By Valerie Woods I am a Belizean woman.

Sometimes I'm an angry woman.

But I'm not as angry as I should be watching a policeman manhandle a woman journalist, grabbing her by the waist, dragging her by her breasts and forcing her to the ground. For God’s sakes, stop it.

I'm not as angry as I should be watching policemen brutally go after the only woman journalist on the scene and not even a "knack seh" on the large, robust men journalists.

I'm not as angry as I should be when a high ranking police officer will put on Facebook that he hopes Marisol learns her lesson. A flashback for all those women who had been beaten to their senses and "learnt" their lessons too. No, I'm not as angry as I should be.

I'm not as angry as I should be with the Prime Minister defending Yellowman when he assaulted Marisol. The silence of the Women Ministers in government, the Women's Commission and the Women's Department remains deafening.

I'm not as angry as I should be when the Prime Minister attacks Lisa, the messenger on Sedi's missteps instead of attacking the message spoken by his Minister. Belize's borders are internationally recognized. It's September, we should all be angry that our government has not affirmed that fact.

No, I'm not as angry as I should be with the intimidation tactics being used to prevent Amy from making her formal complaint. Another excuse for government to continue its abuse.

I'm not as angry as I should be on the outrageous mockery of our young pageant girls of the Loyal Patriotic Order of Belize and the disgrace and embarrassment to Belize. It was the 10th of September, in 2017 anno domini.

I'm not as angry as I should be when MC Shari says we live in a country that respects human rights yet we have brothers and sisters who are discriminated against because of who they love.

Hypocrisy celebrated.

I'm not as angry as I should be when Omar gets manslaughter for stabbing Christie to death because he says she told him she is pregnant for another man which provoked him to kill her. I'm not as angry as I should be when I know a dead woman can't tell no tales.

I'm not as angry as I should be when there is no report or charges still on the youth hostel fire that killed 3 young girls. No statement from Boots and no outcry from the Special Envoy. Boy oh boy.

I'm not as angry as I should be with a City Council whose Mayor, City Administrator and councillors publicly admit they break the law giving liquor license permits to places that don't qualify. Who cares about laws, peace and quality? It's all about the money. Check.

I'm not as angry as I should be when the police let go tear gas at the military tattoo, when 6 youths got shot after J’ouvert, when armed police forces leads off our Carnival and have to be placed throughout the road march due to grenade and gunshot realities.

YET with all the bullying, batons, heavy armory and big chats they couldn't protect Gustavo Hernandez who witnessed the murder of Daniel Sosa. Wait for it - Nolle Prosequi.

I'm not as angry as I should be that we put more stock into the crowning of a queen by Moya than the raping of our lands and illicit enrichment by Vega. She is the crazy one. He is sane. He alright.

We tolerate, hesitate, pontificate but never agitate. Red or Blue you know these words to be true.

I'm not angry because we are not angry. We are 36 years young/ old this September. It is what it is. We don't get angry. We celebrate mediocrity.

Por EFE 11 de Septiembre de 2017 “Estoy perturbado por el incremento en las detenciones y deportaciones deinmigrantes establecidos y que cumplen con la ley. El número de inmigrantes detenidos sin ningún historial penal aumento un 155 % en los primeros cinco meses de este año comparado con el 2016”, afirmó Zeid en una alocución al inicio de la trigésimo sexta sesión del Consejo de Derechos Humanos de la ONU. “Algunos inmigrantes, incluidos residentes de larga data, están tan asustados de ser deportados, que han dejado de usar los servicios de la policía o de la Justicia” , denunció Zeid, y puso el ejemplo de la ciudad de Houston, donde las denuncias por violación de mujeres latinas han caído un 43 % en el primer trimestre del año.

El presidente Jimmy Morales dijo que la decisión del Congreso de la República de no retirarle la inmunidad es una muestra de unidad y responsabilidad de los diputados hacia el pueblo de Guatemala Ciudad de Guatemala 2 SEP 2017 El FCN-Nación se negó a pagar una multa por irregularidades en el financiamiento de la campaña, por lo que el mandatario enfrenta una demanda ante los tribunales El Tribunal Supremo Electoral de Guatemala (TSE), máxima autoridad en la materia, ha anunciado la mañana de este viernes que el partido Frente de Convergencia Nacional (FCN-Nación), que llevó a Jimmy Morales al poder en las elecciones de 2015, queda suspendido administrativamente, por lo que no podrá realizar ninguna actividad política.

El FCN-Nación debía cancelar 60.000 dólares al TSE por varios delitos relacionados con la financiación de su campaña política, multa que debería ser solventada, como fecha tope, el 31 de agosto.

Al imponer la sanción se detalla, entre otros delitos tipificados en la ley de la materia, que el partido no presentó los informes mensuales de gastos de campaña ni los informes bimestrales de ingresos; que existen errores en los datos y cifras, falta documentación contable sobre ingresos y se ha obstaculizado las labores de auditoria y revisión de documentos en la sede de la organización, entre otras infracciones. Por AFP, AP y DPA / EE. UU. 11 de Septiembre de 2017 California impugnó este lunes la decisión del presidente Donald Trump de poner fin en seis meses al programa que aplaza la deportación de inmigrantes que llegaron a Estados Unidos siendo niños.

La demanda presentada por el procurador estatal Xavier Becerra tiene argumentos similares a una impugnación presentada la semana pasada por 15 estados y el Distrito de Columbia. A California se le unieron, en acciones legales por separado, los estados de Maryland, Maine y Minnesota.

La querella de California

señala que el gobierno de Trump viola la Constitución y otras leyes al rescindir el DACA, siglas del programa Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia y que aplaza la deportación de jóvenes inmigrantes que llegaron a Estados Unidos siendo niños -ya sea traídos ilegalmente o porque sus padres se quedaron en el país una vez que vencieron sus permisos- pero que hoy no cuentan con permiso de residencia.

La semana pasada Becerra dijo a The Associated Press que California presentaría su propia demanda porque más de 200 mil de los 800 mil beneficiados por el DACA viven en el estado y sería la entidad más afectada si fuera cancelado.

La demanda presenta principalmente argumentos de procedimiento, incluso por ejemplo que la ley federal requiere que este tipo de decisiones se tomen por razones sólidas y solo después de que el público tenga la oportunidad de hacer comentarios formales. Agrega que el Gobierno no cumplió con la ley federal que le requiere considerar los efectos negativos de la decisión en los pequeños negocios.

OPERACIÓN ESCUDO | EL SALVADOR ORDENA CAPTURA DE 180 PANDILLEROS

El exitoso mega operativo ejecutado ayer en Guatemala se replicó de la misma forma en El Salvador. La fiscalía ordenó la captura de 180 pandilleros supuestos integrantes de la Mara Salvatrucha, como continuidad de los esfuerzos regionales de la Operación Escudo.

En Guatemala la Operación Escudo se ejecutó ayer con más de 300 allanamientos en los que lograron capturar a 178 personas, sindicadas de conformar estructuras de extorsión y ser integrantes de las maras Salvatrucha, 18 y personas que no pertenecen a maras pero que han encontrado en la extorsión un negocio rentable, las cuales son denominadas “imitadores”.

La Fiscalía General de la República de El Salvador ejecutó este martes la operación en la que se giró la orden de capturar a 180 presuntos integrantes de la Mara Salvatrucha 13, de la pandilla Directos Locos Salvatruchos, que opera en los municipios de San Lorenzo, San Esteban Catarina y San Cayetano Istepeque.

En las primeras horas la fiscalía salvadoreña confirmó 73 capturas, 28 notificaciones en diferentes cárceles del país y las bartolinas de la Policía Nacional Civil, que se realizarán en el transcurso del día, para sumar 101 detenciones.

Según la Unidad de Vida de San Vicente, los aprehendidos responderán por nueve homicidios cometidos entre los años 2015 y 2017, en los cantones La Cruz, Santa Lucía y San Francisco, del municipio de San Lorenzo, así como en San Esteban

Catarina.

El fiscal explicó, que cinco de los crímenes comenzaron a investigarse con las denuncias de secuestro, pero posteriormente, confirmaron que las víctimas fueron asesinadas y enterradas clandestinamente, por lo que se procedió a exhumar los restos.

Las investigaciones revelaron que la mayoría de los crímenes responden a la pugna entre las pandillas rivales, por el control de territorio y depuraciones de las estructuras internas.

PUP Concerned About SSB Over-Exposure in GOB September 14, 2017 - The recent revelation that over 80% of $458M of the Social Security Board’s investment portfolio held in government interests is of serious concern to the People’s United Party, and should be of concern to all Belizeans. With a thorough review of the audited and monthly financials, it becomes immediately evident that the Government is using the people’s monies to advance its political agenda.

The SSB’s investments are over-concentrated in government loans, statutory boards and government-controlled institutions such as the National Bank, which continues to operate at a loss. The government controlled BTL and BEL takes up as much as 33.5% of SSB’s investment portfolio in shares and debentures. Other investments are in the Belize Airports Authority, Belize Water Services Limited, Development Finance Corporation (DFC), as well as the Belize City Council Bonds.

Our concern grows when we consider that only a year ago there was over $130M in liquid assets in the banks and today merely $25m is deposited in the commercial banks, and of this only $16m is in short term deposits. This is a threat to contributors and beneficiaries of SSB whose payment of benefits, especially in the short and medium term, require considerable amounts of liquidity. In addition, of the $25m about half is deposited at a single bank.

While SSB plays an important role in the development of the economy, steps should be taken to limit the concentration of the portfolio with any one institution. This holds true with the placement of certificates of deposit with any one bank. In placing CDs the bank and its assets and liabilities should be properly analyzed. Liquidity of the investments is a foremost consideration in the implementation of an investment in accordance with actuarial recommendations, taking into consideration that the increase in reserves will arise exclusively from a decreasing share of investment income in the medium term.

Given the recent information on the status of the GOB’s financial situation it is alarming that so much of the monies paid by the workers and employers to the SSB could be in jeopardy. This fund is the main safety net for thousands of Belizean workers in time of sickness and old age. We call on the Social Partners represented on the Board of Directors of the SSB to ensure that the fund is not placed in a positon of undue risk.

The latest press release sent out by the Belize Airports Authority (BAA) stating that a $7m loan to upgrade the Caye Caulker airstrip is expected to come from the SSB raises further concerns for it comes on the heels of a $17m loan for the upgrading of the Municipal Airstrip which as we understand is only 65% completed.

The funds at the Social Security Board belong to the Belizean people.

This is the people’s money. The People’s United Party will remain vigilant in protecting the people’s money against the undue risks taken by the UDP for political expediency.
