FRAMES MASON? Hon. John Saldivar attempted to frame William ‘Danny’ Mason or Rajesh Ouelett for the beheading of Pastor Llewelyn Lucas. This allegation was sworn testimony in the murder trial of William “Danny” Mason, Ashton Vanegas, Keron Fernandez, Terrence Fernandez, and Ernest Castillo in Belmopan before Justice Antoinette Moore. The trial had been on hold for several weeks since the court was waiting to hear from a witness who was an employee of the US Embassy—a federal agent. The court had to use diplomatic channels to get that written statement which was tendered into evidence.

FRAMES MASON? Continued from page 1 The witness, who is a US Federal Agent, says that Belize police contacted him to assist with a US national, David Dodd, who was the victim of a crime in Belize. Dodd has testified via Skype that he accompanied Pastor Lucas and another man to Mason’s Intelco Hill home on the day that Pastor Lue was decapitated. He, Dodd, was then kidnapped, taken to Mason’s Outback Ranch and released with a warning.

The Special Agent thus met Mason already in detention for Pastor Lucas’ murder. Mason asked to speak with someone from the US Embassy. The Special Agent said in the written statement that Mason was in fear of his life because allegedly, John Saldivar, the Minister of National Security, was attempting to frame him. The US Agent advised Mason to get an attorney.

So, Mason told a US Federal Agent that John Saldivar was attempting to frame him. That is sizzling but not new. In 2016,

Saldivar had said in an interview “I know that the end of the day nothing can be unearthed that will suggest that I have done anything untoward with this gentleman.” But in 2016, John Saldivar was not running for UDP Leader.

The rest is up to the UDP and maybe up to the Belizean public to determine Saldivar’s fate. What will the written words of a Federal Agent thousands of miles away do in our courts of law and justice?

If the UDP has a moral stance its members will not vote for Saldivar given this piece of information now accepted as evidence in our courts.

The court of public opinion is all over social media and the streets but the only voters that Saldivar cares for at this moment is the UDP Delegates. He is not caring for the people of Belmopan.

Saldivar is actually selling off his chances of even being re-elected in Belmopan in his bid to be leader.

Nobody told Saldivar that a sinking Vega is really no help in the desire to rise to the top.

PAUL CASTILLO MURDER IN COROZAL Police response time to murder in progress WAY TOO SLOW!!

Earl “Badman” Bowden, 47, of Button Wood Bay, Belize City and Norman Justo Castillo, 38, of Belama Phase 2, Belize City have been charge for the murder of Paul Castillo, 66.

According to head of National Crimes Investigations Branch (NCIB) Joseph Myvette when police arrived on the scene sometime around 1:30 a.m. they found Castillo’s badly mutilated body inside his house located on Fifth Street North, Corozal Town. Castillo’s body was seen with chop wounds to the feet, hands, face, chest, head and neck.

Both Bowden and Castillo were caught and arrested by police and have appeared in court. Both men have been remanded to the Belize Central Prison until December 23, when they are scheduled to re-appear in court.

What took police so long to respond to a phone call made about the crime in progress at a site that was less than 5 minutes away? According to Channel 5 news their investigation revealed that “around 12:33 a.m., a first call was made to the police that Castillo was being beaten inside the house; eight minutes later, a second call was made since police did not show up.

The argument was reportedly over land documents; the deceased was heard saying he doesn’t have it. By this time, neighbors say that they could hear screaming and that’s when a third call was made to the police around 1 a.m.”

The elderly man’s screams ended at around 1:11a.m. and according to the neighbor, police showed up at around 1:15 a.m. which is contrary to the time head of NCIB gave in his interview to the press./// United States

ANOTHER PLANE… MORE EXCUSES FROM GOB Thursday, October 24, 2019 Another plane, this one an executive jet in pristine condition, was discovered in Blue Creek days ago, abandoned. As is always the case, Police were late on the scene. Nobody was found in the area, and there was no sign of any cargo. Because of the size of the plane, and the fact that it was just discarded, Belizeans can only speculate about the value of the cargo, and despite what must have been a large, coordinated operation to land and unload the plane, all was done and over with before local law enforcement even got close.

This week Mexican authorities revealed that they are placing elements of the Mexican National Guard at key locations along the border, where it is believed these drugs make their way from Belize into Mexico before moving to points further north. It is clear that the Mexicans have no confidence in the ability or will of Belizean authorities to make even a dent in the flow of narcotics into their country. And that’s certainly no surprise.

This week, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams proudly boasted that there were 12 drug planes which landed last year, as opposed to only 7 so far this year.

What Williams is not saying is that the planes that are found landed, mostly damaged, burned and destroyed, are the planes which did not land and take off. There are credible reports suggesting that for every plane which is ‘found’

by Belizean Police, there are ten which land and take off successfully, undetected.

Even more ludicrous was a release from the Ministry of National Security which gave the same old sorry excuse – that in the year 2019, after allegedly millions spent on radar, “Belize does not yet have military radar tracking capability. In the time being Belize relies on an external regional network that generates tracking information as soon as suspect planes leave South America.”

According to the release, once they receive information of these planes leaving South America, law enforcement teams are then deployed to as many known landing sites in the country as possible. It is unbelievable that in this day and age, our Ministry of National Security must resort to guessing where a plane will land. And it is certainly no wonder, then, that so many planes are able to land undetected, until they are ‘discovered’ hours after.

Belizeans have no doubt that there is collusion at very high levels of the Police Department, and even the Government, when it comes to the movement of drugs through Belize. The modus operandi is this – the remains of planes are found, there are no persons or cargo, and the Police hold a conference to say that they are processing the scene in an attempt to determine whether the said airplane carried any illicit cargo. And that is the last that anybody ever hears about it. There is never any follow-up on whether the alleged ‘processing’ turned up any evidence that Police can use. And all is quiet until the next plane, empty, is discovered.

Months ago, an SUV was discovered on the George Price Highway after a plane landed off the Coastal Road. The SUV was chock full of cocaine. To this day, months after, Police have said nothing about who owns the SUV, though tracking the owner through Transport records would have been the work of minutes. There were many queries in the weeks following the discovery, but no information was ever released.

What is happening in Belize is clearly a well-greased network facilitating narco-trafficking, which goes all the way to the top. Until the heads of the local snakes in Government and in the Police are cut off, planes will continue to land as they wish, Police will continue to come up empty-handed, and narcotics will continue to flow.

EDITORIAL “The Wages of Poverty are Everywhere”- Hon Cordel Hyde

T

he last time there was an increase in the minimum wage in Belize was 2012 when it was increased to three dollars and thirty cents per hour for both agro production and unskilled labourers. While it meant only a twenty cent increase for shop clerks and other unskilled workers it meant an increase of eighty cents for those that toiled under the relentless rays of the sun in Belizean fields and farms. Yes in 2012, those who worked the fields in the agro industry earned just two dollars and fifty cents an hour.

The case for raising the minimum wage is a straightforward one. Wages need to be adjusted periodically to avoid the erosion of the purchasing power of the worker. In addition, a modest raise in wages stimulates consumer spending and therefore helps the bottom line for businesses and helps us to grow the economy by increasing consumer demand. Belize benefits from experiencing improved worker productivity.

The increase in government mandated minimum wage must be delicately balanced between the effective protection of labourers and the development and sustainability of enterprises. Furthermore, as in other countries, the minimum wage must be adjusted to the differences in the cost of living across varying regions. The cost of basic goods and services in the cayes and in other top tourist destinations like Placencia are far above those of similar quality on the mainland. Therefore, minimum wage rates should be raised in those areas to accommodate for the higher cost of living.

Recently, the buzz phrase among economists and other economic development gurus is living wage. The living wage is one which will allow the worker to meet basic needs of housing, food, health, education, transportation and other essentials such as clothing and to maintain a basic standard of living. The Greater London Authority (GLA) uses the poverty threshold figure as the basis to compute the living wage. This figure is basically sixty percent of the median income of the work force plus fifteen percent to allow for emergencies. We must bear in mind that the United Kingdom has access to free health care through their National Health Service and free education for students up to age sixteen and a far more efficient public transportation system. Normal Belizeans must pay for these luxuries and of course higher education is only for the very privileged and politically connected. The Statistical Institute of Belize in its most recent report puts the median monthly income for Belizeans at $1,244 as at April 2019. By our calculations sixty percent of the median plus a conservative fifteen percent to attempt to cover health, education and transportation puts the current living wage at a minimum of $4.40 per hour. This figure is well above the current minimum wage of $3.30 per hour.

The PUP plans to increase the minimum wage to alleviate what the Hon Cordel Hyde described during his 20192020 budget presentation as the harsh and bitter conditions “in every run-down house, in the faces of poverty…in every barefooted child.” The current minimum wage is much lower than the living wage the Belizean worker requires to feed and care for their family. The truth is that for years the purchasing power of the common Belizean has been dwindling and this UDP government has turned a deaf ear and a blind eye to the plight workers face in order to provide even basic necessities.

Cynical critics will say that a raise in the minimum wage will trigger an increase in unemployment as employers seek to cut operation and production costs. However, the PUP will implement the increase in wages tempered with a reduction in the fuel taxes among other measures in order to keep costs down for employers and to mitigate unwanted effects in the short run. Raising the minimum wage will help to activate the economy as the labour force increases consumption and spending. The PUP is committed to providing genuine solutions that will ensure tangible results effectively lowering poverty rates and improving the quality of life for all Belizeans. #PUPREALRESULTS

“Los salarios de la pobreza están en todas partes”- Hon Cordel Hyde

L

a última vez que hubo un aumento en el salario mínimo en Belice fue en el año 2012 cuando se aumentó a tres dólares y treinta centavos por hora, tanto para la producción agropecuaria como para los trabajadores no-calificados. Si bien significaba sólo un aumento de veinte centavos para los empleados de tienda y otros trabajadores no-calificados, significaba un aumento de ochenta centavos para aquellos que se esfuerzan bajo los rayos implacables del sol en los campos y granjas de Belice. Sí, en el 2012, aquellos que trabajan los campos en la industria agropecuaria ganaban sólo dos dólares y cincuenta centavos por hora.

El argumento de aumentar el salario mínimo es sencillo. Los salarios deben ajustarse periódicamente para evitar el desgaste del poder adquisitivo del trabajador. Además, un aumento modesto de los salarios estimula el gasto de los consumidores y, por lo tanto, ayuda a las ganancias de las empresas y nos ayuda a hacer crecer la economía aumentando la demanda de los consumidores. Belice se beneficia al experimentar una mayor productividad de los trabajadores.

El aumento del salario mínimo exigido por el gobierno debe equilibrarse delicadamente entre la protección efectiva de los trabajadores y el desarrollo y la sostenibilidad de las empresas. Además, al igual que en otros países, el salario mínimo debe ajustarse a las diferencias en el costo de vida en diferentes regiones. El costo de los bienes y servicios básicos en los cayos y en otros destinos turísticos de primer nivel como Placencia están muy por encima de los de calidad similar en tierra firme. Por lo tanto, las tasas de salario mínimo deben aumentarse en esas áreas para acomodar el costo de vida más alto.

Recientemente, la frase de moda entre los economistas y otros gurús del desarrollo económico es el salario digno.

El salario digno es aquel que permitirá al trabajador satisfacer las necesidades básicas de vivienda, alimentación, salud, educación, transporte y otros elementos esenciales, como la ropa, y mantener un nivel de vida básico. La Autoridad del Gran Londres (GLA, en inglés) utiliza la cifra del umbral de pobreza como base para calcular el salario digno. Esta cifra es básicamente el sesenta por ciento de los ingresos medios de la fuerza de trabajo más el quince por ciento para permitir emergencias. Debemos tener en cuenta que el Reino Unido tiene acceso a la atención de salud gratuita a través de su Servicio Nacional de Salud y la educación gratuita para estudiantes de hasta dieciséis años y un sistema de transporte público mucho más eficiente.

Los Beliceños normales deben pagar para estos lujos y, por supuesto, la educación superior es solamente para los muy privilegiados y políticamente conectados. El Instituto de Estadística de Belice en su informe más reciente sitúa la mediana de los ingresos mensuales de los beliceños en $1,244 a abril de 2019. Los críticos cínicos dirán que un aumento del salario mínimo desencadenará un aumento del desempleo a medida que los empleadores traten de reducir los costos de operación y producción. El PUP propone implementar el aumento de los salarios a $5.00 por hora atenuado con una reducción de los impuestos sobre los combustibles, entre otras medidas, a fin de mantener los costos bajos para los empleadores y mitigar los efectos no deseados en el corto plazo. Aumentar el salario mínimo contribuirá a activar la economía a medida que la fuerza laboral aumente el consumo y el gasto. Three murders within less than 72 hours The first murder was on Monday night sometime after 7pm where the body of Brandon Bennett was found at the entrance of Vista Vel Mar, Ladyville. His body was seen with multiple gunshot wounds and police say several expended shells were found nearby.

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch: “during the course of the investigation, we also determined that Bennett had left his home on Louise Bevans Street sometime shortly after seven p.m. on foot and made his way to the Supal Street area. As a result of that, we are following several leads in that area; police are on the ground conducting investigation in that area.”

Bennet was no stranger to the law. In July 2016 he was acquitted of an attempted murder charge.

In March 2017 he was shot to the stomach as he rode his bicycle across Belcan Bridge in Belize City. In September 2019 he was found guilty of being a gang member.

The second murder took place on the quiet island of Caye Caulker. Jaymie Marin, 28, a known mental patient, has been arrested and charged for Murder, Attempted Murder, Use of Deadly Means of Harm and Grievous Harm upon his cousins Issac, 17, and Carlos Marin. The incident happened after 12 a.m. Tuesday morning at the Marin’s family house located at the corner of Luciano Reyes Street and Avenida Langosta, Caye Caulker. According to Police, Carlos Marin was socializing with Jaymie inside the living room of their home when obviously an altercation ensued and as a result Isaac got up from where he was sleeping in an attempt to aid his brother. Issac died of as a result of the injuries received and Carlos has been treated and released.

The third murder happened in Orange Walk sometime after 7 p.m. on Wednesday night. It is alleged that Darren Lee Gentle, 26, and another man visited an area on the San Jose Nuevo Palmar Road to conduct business with a person who was waiting for them there. While talking to that person a gunman came out from the bushes and shot Gentle. The man accompanying Gentle managed to flee the scene. Gentle was an employee of the Orange Walk Town Council.///

REAL Big Deal Here at the Belize Times, we were inclined to support Patrick Faber for leader of the UDP, simply because he’s a little less annoying than John Saldivar – just a little. But we have this week re-evaluated our position, and like all the other mice in the UDP Cabinet, we are jumping off Faber’s sinking ship. That Saldivar is a powerful man, a real big deal indeed. We heard from the grapevine that just last week he was complaining about the BDF Defender which transports him all over the country. According to reports, Saldivar was upset because due to obvious size and weight constraints, he and his right hand Dougie couldn’t travel together, so he was always forced to leave Dougie behind. Imagine – Saldivar complains, and in a matter of days a brand new jet is delivered to Belize via Blue Creek. And this one can accommodate his entire entourage. Now that’s real power. Sorry Patrick. You got nothing to offer, buddy.

Mason What a hell of a thing. William Danny Mason, the porky Minister’s best friend who is accused of beheading a man, is claiming that he was framed by the Minister. Just take a second and think about that. The Minister in charge of Police, and the man who wants to be the leader of the UDP and the Prime Minister when Barrow walks, has been named in a sensational murder trial. And he has been named by no less than the man accused of the horrific crime. This man Mason, who travelled the country with Saldivar, who had his own elite GSU Police guard, and who spent many private hours with the porky one, is calling his name. Things that make you go hmmm, especially if you remember that when Mason was allegedly found at the bar with the head in his pickup, he was drinking along with the man who is Saldivar’s right hand. What is also very interesting is that before Pastor Lue was killed, he was attacking Saldivar on Facebook. If Mason is saying that Saldivar framed him for the murder, then is he accusing the Minister of being the one who murdered Mason?

This is one that will bear watching. We at the Belize Times have maintained that Saldivar should have been asked some very tough questions after Pastor Lue’s bizarre murder. We still maintain that.

Pablo et al There are big things happening in the Ministry of Health, and the electrician turned Minister is right in the middle of it. For a while now, we at the Belize Times have heard reports that Pablo and his wife Danini, who is the daughter of Erwin, are the real owners of a pharmaceutical supply company, with two other persons fronting for them. For a long time now, we at the Belize Times have heard that new CEO George Gough is the principal in a pharmaceutical distribution company. These reports are getting much more persistent, especially since Pablo’s wife, who heads the Drug Inspectorate, has been accused of holding back containers of quality medication for months and months, while inferior products from a certain specific company have been allowed to flood the market. Now, a new memo from the Ministry has directed NHI users to purchase these inferior pharmaceuticals only from certain pharmacies. We are told that many persons are complaining that the medication they get, supplied by certain companies, are inferior, and in some cases don’t work at all. This is no joke. People can die if the medication they depend on for diabetes or hypertension or other chronic illnesses don’t work. There needs to be an immediate investigation into this. And if heads must roll, then so be it.

Reyesco Just the other day, a company allegedly with close ties to the Minister was found mislabeling medication, Diclofenac, which it supplied to the different health regions. This company allegedly deliberately tampered with the labelling, and sources in the health system state that this could have affected the health of patients. It is a criminal offence. Yet, the company was allowed to get away scot-free, because the Director of Health Services claimed that it was one of the most reliable and credible pharmaceutical suppliers. This is serious, serious business. For real.

Give up dude A long time ago, we gave up on trying to figure out what’s in Big Mike’s belly. Could be all the inhabitants of a small country, judging by the size. But now we’re busy trying to figure out what’s in his head. We hear he wants to be Chairman of the UDP. He’s a twice failed political aspirant, and sources say that apart from his arrogance, the fact is that he couldn’t campaign because he has no stamina. They said it, not us. And now he wants to be Chairman. We think he should just call it off. Some people are winners, and some are losers. We guess you can figure out which category big Mike falls into.

UDP Players Sighted in Immigration Elections Soon

The Belize Times has been following closely the sightings of UDP Ministers and other high-level players in Immigration offices country. Sources tell us that they have become frequent visitors in the offices which are mostly staffed by UDP appointees just for this purpose, and are allowed in areas which are off-limits to persons not employed by the Department. All political observers know what this means, from past experience. Elections are close, and the UDP is preparing to do what they did in 2012, and again in 2015 – they will try to steal the elections by registering persons

who are not qualified to vote.

Just recently, a picture of disgraced former Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega in an Immigration office in Orange Walk went viral. Vega, who was removed from office after his scandalous corruption and worthless deeds were revealed, has made it clear to those close to him that he wants back into office, and has been seen with Minister of National Security John Saldivar. It

is well known that Vega and Saldivar are close allies, and speculation is that Vega is providing the bankroll for Saldivar’s campaign to become UDP leader.

Immigration offices countrywide have been under scrutiny for years, amid accusations of facilitating illegal registrations for UDP Ministers.

Readers will recall another disgraced former Minister, Elvin Penner who was caught on camera facilitating documents for persons who were not qualified to vote. It is known that hundreds and hundreds of immigrants are pushed through the immigration process by the UDP whenever elections are called, and their documents are paid for on the condition that they vote for the UDP when they go to the polls.

Readers will also remember, in consecutive elections, pictures of UDP operatives remov-

ing boxes and boxes of documents from Immigration offices under the cover of night, with no explanation given.

In 2020, whenever General Elections are called, the UDP knows that their time is done.

They know that corruption has become their modus operandi and the people are fed up. They know that Belizeans have watched Cabinet Ministers and UDP family members and their cronies get rich while ‘normal’ Belizeans stay poor. They know that it is the end of the line for them, because they have abused and victimized the people for too long. And so, in what is Mr. Barrow’s last hurrah, they will pull out all the stops, and use every corrupt influence in the Election and Boundaries office and the Immigration Department to try to steal a win. But even that won’t help them.

When the worthless Gaspar Vega and other UDP Ministers are scur-

rying around in Immigration offices trying to steal a win, they are wasting their time. When General Elections are called, the people will speak, and this UDP crowd will be booted out of office, and more than a few of them, no doubt, will be facing life after politics looking through the bars of a jail cell. Wait for it.

Stann Creek Water Boards Uproar

The Hope Creek Water Board did not mince any words and are willing to take any action necessary to keep their present Water Board Chairman.

Especially since, he has a year left in his tenure. They as a village along with their recently elected Village Council of this past summer 2019 feel that he is of great integrity.

The opposite could probably be said of the letter sent to them via the Ministry of Rural Development. Here they are seen imposing a totally new Water Board. Also, to add salt to this wound they are imposing the losing UDP candidate for Hope Creek chairman on the village.

In the Ministry’s correspondence, the board is named and then it says that they are consulting. The residents met and resolved in no uncertain terms. NO key will be passed on to anyone.

This is normal UDP-style and easily diagnosed.

The same type of letter was issued to Pomona, Independence, Humminbird/Middlesex.

The Water Utility is controversial in villages since it is the direct managing of lives and this means finances. After the village council elections in the summer there were numerous allegations of wrong doing and definitely of UDP cases of hanky-panky with the people’s resources in August Pine Ridge, Bella Vista, Santa Clara, Ladyville, La Gracia, and others.

The people of the southern villages will not take any less but a water board that is of their choosing.

UDP INFAMY The 2012 Elections

On early 2017, the Senate Special Select Committee continued its Senate hearings on the Immigration Department in Belmopan. The meeting proceeded with its agenda to investigate the findings of Auditor General Dorothy Bradley’s Special Audit into the Passport, Visa and Nationality Department for 2011-2013. The news of the hearings was not necessarily on Immigration but it was a stinging allegation that pointed to a government elected fraudulently. This will definitely remain in the Halls of UDP infamy into perceivable history.

Former Immigration Director, Ruth Meighan, was interrogated by the Senate Select Committee for approving applications for permanent residency, passports, and visa issuance. Auditor Bradley had revealed that a list of 15 foreigners received a passport without meeting prerequisites. One of the requirements for permanent residency is to reside in Belize for one year, and these foreigners did not meet legal requirements.

Senator Aldo Salazar questioned why foreigners were granted permanent residency. “When I was approving the permanent residency, I did not have the visa application or information on the visa in front of me. What I had was a file that is a permanent residency file that indicated to me that the person has been living in Belize for over a year. The application for permanent residency comes in a file that has photocopy records of the applicant, and on that file, the indication from the officer says that the person has been living in Belize for the one-year period as specified, and within that you would have the passport of that individual with the stamp of entry and other permits that were issued. Based on that information that is presented, that is what we use to give approval,” said Meighan.

A list of minister recommendations from United Democratic Party (UDP) officials, including Minister Elvin Penner, Minister Manuel Heredia Jr., Minister Edmond Castro, Minister John Saldivar, Minister Erwin Contreras, were brought up in the Senate hearing.

The Senate Select Committee was revealed that the General Elections in 2012 had the major influence of the approving of Belizean nationality for those who did not qualify. Senator Courtenay questioned Meighan the reason a minister would write on behalf of individuals they did not know.

“My impression was that the minister was writing on behalf of a person that he knows to say that he is supporting somebody from his constituency.

The applications were processed and approved by my desk even with the minister’s recommendation based on the information that is presented to me by the officer to say that the person meets the requirements for a visa,” said Meighan.

She also admitted under oath that she never did the required verification if the minister knew the people he was recommending.

All this has been stinking from early 2017 and is not getting the rains that the New River is getting. It is still here.

So when we see UDP near the word IMMIGRATION we shudder at the thought that they will cheat their way once more. PUP is way more vigilant today.

The people will expose them every time they shift off course towards the ‘EXIT UDP’.

DAVCO STANN CREEK

DAVCO Stann Creek is now in place. Congrats to all 12 PUP’s who will manage and control the village council agenda in Stann Creek.

The District Associations of Village Councils is a serious litmus test to show the Belizean public that the UDP was very wrong this past summer when they claimed victory at the Village Council elections. The DAVCO committee is elected by winning chairmen and chairladies along with representatives of the winning village councils.

So far the PUP has won Stann Creek and Orange Walk. The UDP has tried to change the DAVCO election dates to try to catch the PUP sleeping or to plain mislead with the date. The UDP government officials have also tried a sort of Gerrymandering by zoning districts BUT our PUP Chairman Usher and the VC Chairs would have nothing of it. The Cayo, Toledo, and Corozal DAVCO elections are coming up.

Team Belize wins Gold

in U13 volleyball at 10th CODICADER Games San Jose, Costa Rica, October 20, 2019 The Belize U-13 volleyball boys won the Gold medal in U-13 volleyball competition at the 10th CODICADER Junior Students Games held in San Jose, Costa Rica from last Wednesday to Sunday.

In Game 1 last Wednesday, Team Belize won 25-11, 25-13 against Panama In Game 2 last Thursday, Belize upset Costa Rica 25-12, 25-10.

In Game 3 on Friday, they dominated Nicaragua 25-5, 25-6, advancing to the semifinals as leader of their group.

In Game 4 in the semifinals last Saturday, they qualified to the finals by a 25-10, 25-8 win against El Salvador.

In Game 5 the championship final on Sunday, they toughed it out in 3 sets: 25-5, 15-25, 15-13 in the rematch against Costa Rica to win the Gold.

The proud parents, friends and fans rolled out a red-capet welcome complete with a motorcade from the PGIA to the City when the team came back home, with a further celebration at the Stars’ gym on Monday evening.

The U-13 Baby Jaguars placed 4th in the boys’ football competition at the Ernesto Rohrnoser Pavas Stadium.

In Game 1 last Wednesday,, Belize won 3-1 against Panama with a goal apiece from Zionnel Reid, Jeffereson Rodriguez and Jazed Che. In Game 2 last Thursday, they marched over Nicaragua 7-0, with 2 goals apiece from Austin Reimer, Zionnel Reid and Jazed Che, and one goal by Jefferson Rodriguez.

In Game 3 on Friday, they lost 0-1 to Costa Rica, who scored a late header, but Belize still qualfied to the semifinals as the 2nd place team from their group.

In Game 4 in the semifinals last Saturday, they were eliminated from the finals, and relegated to the 3rd place consolation match by a 3-4 loss to El Salvador in penalties. Belize had drawn 2-3 in regulation with a goal apiece from Jazed Che and Austin Reimer. In penalties, Austin Reimer, Zionnel Reid and Jazed Che scored for Belize, but the Salvador keeper stopped Belize’s 2nd kick, and the 5th kicker missed the goal altogether! Belize’s goalkeeper stopped El Salvador’s 1st try, but the nex 4 scored: 4-3 final.

In game 5 in the bronze medal match on Sunday, Belize drew 1-1 with Costa Rica with a goal by Jefferson Rodriguez, but lost 0-3 in penalties.

Belize’s U-13 volleyball girls did not make it to the semifinals, losing all 3 of their games: 0-2 to Panama on Wednesday, 0-2 to Costa Rica on Thursday, and 0-2 to Nicaragua on Friday.

The track and field contingent also placed 4th.

CASE MANAGEMENT HELD FOR PM BARROW LIBEL SUIT AGAINST PUP PERSONALITIES Friday October 17, 2019 (Permission from the Amandala) Last week, a libel suit filed by the law firm of Barrow and Williams on behalf of the Prime Minister Dean Barrow against some opposition People’s United Party(PUP) personalities went to court for case management before Supreme Court Justice Shona Young.

What emerged from the case management is that the court ordered cost of court against the claimant because the court papers had to be submitted three times before it was finalised.

No trial date has been set as yet for Prime Minister Dean Barrow’s liber suit against Vibes Media Talk Show Host Wendy Castillo, Vaughn Gill, Anthony Mahler, and Ashton Longsworth.

In July, a court submission that was made by the United States Federal Trade Commission(FTC) in connection with the Sanctuary Bay real estate scam became public. The FTC submission mentioned the names of some ministers of government in Belize’s Cabinet and the Prime Minister’s law firm of Barrow and Williams, which had provided legal services for the Sanctuary Bay principals.

Prime Minister called a press conference to present his side of the story and denied knowledge of the Sanctuary Bay real estate scam, which caused US investors an estimated 100 million US dollars.

Shortly after his press conference, the local media was warned in a press release from the Prime Minister’s law firm that they should not repeat certain allegations that the FTC had made in its court submission, or there would be sued. During the question-and-answer period of his press conference, PM Barrow was asked by 7News Jules Vasquez if he would sue the FTC from using his name in the manner that they did.

This was PM Barrow’s response to the question regarding whether he would take legal action against the FTC. “No sir, I will not tangle with FTC. No, sir. Frame it under the

heading of taking one for the team.

I have been accused of being many things but not a fool, at least not by anybody whose opinion I regard. I’m not even sure how, even if I were so inclined, how I would begin to do that, to challenge one of the most powerful federal agencies.”

So that’s just not on, and as I said earlier, I believe in answer to Jules, that’s it. Once we get out from under this, once this settlement is finalized, if I never see, --well I’ve never seen Mr Cohen-- if I never hear the name FTC again in my life, I will be an extremely happy man. No question at all. It will be a fool’s errand and I have no such thought whatsoever.”

The person’s named in the lawsuit apparently made remarks on the Vibes morning talk show(The Whip) about the Sanctuary Bay scandal to which the PM took exception.

The PUP personalities whom the Prime Minister is suing for libel are being defended by attorneys Eamon Courtney, S.C., Michel Chebat, S.C., Andrew Marshall, S.C., and Anthony Sylvester. Attorney Rodwell Williams, S.C. is defending PM Barrow.

THE BELIZE TIMES Drug Traffickers Cash or Country First

A lot of times, they’re right in front of your face, and they’re really difficult, but we must make them.” - Brittany Murphy This past Sunday night residents of Blue Creek in the Orange Walk District were alerted to the sound of a suspicious low-flying jet before it landed on a road in the area with the aid of temporary lights. A team of heavily-armed men quickly unloaded the drugs, after which they whisked the crew and its illegal cargo to a safe location.

Hours after all those, who facilitated the secure delivery of the plane load of drugs, had disappeared without a trace, heavily armed police and BDF soldiers arrived on the scene and cordoned off the area with the abandoned aircraft. At a press conference the following day, the GoB informs the nation that it cannot say the abandoned aircraft brought drugs into the country, because apart from the unauthorized plane nothing else illegal was found in the area.

All the routine actions, talking points, and cover-up with the landing of narco-jets in the country. On the few occasions when a drug plane is intercepted and persons and vehicles are found at or near the site, no really serious effort is made to prosecute the foreign and local players, and the case is almost always thrown out due to behind-the-scene deals.

To date seven drug planes have landed in Belize this year. That’s an average of a drug plane landing almost every month with two months remaining in 2019.

Huge amounts of cocaine passes through Belize easily every month, because some powerful politicians, several high ranking members of the security forces, and a number of unscrupulous business persons all collude with drug traffickers to move tons of drugs across the country throughout the year. In facilitating the drug trade, local players earn from couple thousand dollars to millions of dollars for themselves every single year.

Many persons want quick money to live the good life, and the drug-traffickers have millions of dollars at the ready for all those who choose self-enrichment with their dough before country.

In many ways drug trafficking is a losing cause for the Belize.

Many local players in the drug trade are paid with cash or cocaine.

That results in the constant discovery of bullet riddled bodies in the sea, in shallow graves, or in homes as those individuals fight for total ownership of the cash or drugs in circulation or for control of areas to sell their very destructive product.

Due to its addictiveness and high cost, cocaine is also responsible for a lot of broken homes. Many breadwinners abandon their families and use their earnings to help sustain a habit that cost more than twice their weekly wages every week. Cocaine also caused several Belizeans to develop mental illness or psychiatric disorder.

This white powder also causes havoc in the society as its use result in many individuals losing interest in being productive citizens. Such persons often engage in criminal acts to sustain their addiction.

Ignoring the drug problem will only result in the problem getting worse.

We need to insist that the GoB seeks the assistance of friendly countries in obtaining a radar that can detect low-flying aircrafts entering the country unlawfully. Secondly we must invest in intelligence. We must have moles among the local facilitators of the drug trade, and we must incentivize whistleblowers in the underworld activity as much as possible. Those are two of the safest ways to break up the deadly drug business in the country and bring the guilty parties to justice.

In fighting the drug trade we must also provide our people with a wide range of jobs with living wages. That is a necessity to discourage Belizeans from entering the drug trade which often leads to their early death or incapacitation as they fight for the crumbs from the illicit business.

In combating the drug trade we must also insist that the GoB put as much vigor, interest, and resources in intercepting plane loads of cocaine and prosecuting local and foreign facilitators of the trade as they place in busting ‘little’ people with a few ounces of weed, a sniff of cocaine, old rusty guns, a few contraband items, and items for $5.00 or less that are stolen from supermarkets.

Failure to invest in those things is a green light for the drug planes to continue landing in Belize.

https://www.poresto.net/ Por José Ramos(translated) CHETUMAL, 19 de octubre The absence of Belizean tourists in the city of Chetumal before the new regulation of Mexican customs is directly impacting service providers. The cancellation of temporary permits and the activation of Regional Visitor Cards (TVR), far from ordering the cross-border flow, have caused a marked decrease in visits by Belizeans who arrive in Chetumal by land due to health, shopping and / or recreation.

Currently there are figures of a monthly decrease of up to five thousand Belizeans who have stopped visiting Chetumal because of the complications to obtain the Regional Visitor Cards.

If this situation continues, the economy of hundreds of companies in the south of the state will be affected, since each Belizean visitor spends an average of one thousand Mexican pesos, which means millions in losses for merchants and service providers. Different representatives of business chambers have spoken in favor of making immigration and customs authorities more flexible with the entry of Belizean visitors, who represent an important economic spill for the restaurant, commercial and hotel sector of Chetumal.

The truth is that the cancellation of temporary entry permits by the Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM) has substantially reduced the presence of Belizean tourists to Chetumal during almost the entire year. In the last 6 months thousands of Belizean visitors have stopped entering Mexican territory through Chetumal, due to the cancellation of temporary entry permits.

In the last summer holiday period, service providers felt the absence of Belizean citizens in the capital, derived from the tightening of immigration policies implement-

ed by the federal government.

Merchants and restaurant owners point out that the presence of Belizeans has been substantially less so far this year and they fear that during the next season it will lessen even more.

This situation would have an impact on the economy of the service providers and businesses of the capital, since the citizens of the neighboring country enter Chetumal in search of food, clothing, automotive spare parts, and medical services, among others.

It is important to remember that since April 6 of this year, the National Migration Institute (INM) stopped issuing any type of temporary permit granted to Belizeans with whom until before that date they could enter Mexico for periods of up to 72 hours.

From then on, Belizean citizens can only enter with a passport, or, Regional Visitor Card (TVR), a free procedure with a validity period of five years. However, in the process of the TVR, Belizeans have encountered an obstacle, since they are only delivered 25 per day and appointments are scheduled up to three months due to high demand.

In the first months of the year it was common for only one weekend to enter up to 5,000 Belizeans to Chetumal, but now the influx decreased by almost 50 percent, when provisional passes were denied. This could generate a substantial impact for the service providers of Chetumal, Bacalar and Majahual, who since last summer reported a significant decrease in their earnings due to the absence of consumers from Belize.

UPDATE: As we go to press, we have reports of Mexican Senate chiming into this situation.

They are asking their immigration for the Courtesy passes to be given out once more. Additionally, they urge that there be an increase in the issuance of the regional cards.

GODWIN EXPOSES HIMSELF Godwin Hulse was handpicked by Prime Minister Barrow to review the Boledo and Lottery business. To the shock of professional officers in the Ministry of Finance, the Auditor General and Accountant General, Boledo/Lottery was taken away from government and given to private persons.

The new owner was none other than Chinese Belizean Brads at the foot of Belcan bridge. Brads was a private UDP hangout spot for the Prime Minister and several UDP Ministers. The Prime Minister’s son was rumored to be the majority shareholder and this will become a question to the Prime Minister in the House if the “gagging” speaker doesn’t stifle the issue.

Needless to say millions of dollars have gone into private bank accounts.

Last week, Mose Hyde who has helped champion the issue of the hijacking of the Boledo by the UDP without any public disclosure or proper oversight, brought up an interesting point.

Mose referred to a recent issue when the media questioned Minister Godwin Hulse about the fiasco. Mose pointed out that Hulse was patently evasive and actually said he did not know who owned the Boledo business.

He then said the information was available and the media could apply to get it.

As Mose pointed out, the Minister must know, if he does not, then he should find out and inform the Belizean people. It makes no sense that Hulse assisted a corrupt government to gangster the Boledo and then say he didn’t bother to find out who walked away with a multi-million dollars business.

NO MEDICINE AGAIN Ministry of Health has done it again. They are short of anti-retroviral medication which is Vital to HIV patients.

The media inquired and was given the usual excuse.

This unsatisfactory situation where the health authorities constantly run short of medication is totally unacceptable. The budget for the ministry of health is a whopping 145 million dollars. At the Ministry alone, they 40 thousand dollars on overtime, 38 thousand dollars when they use their private vehicles and claim mileage allowance, 180 thousand dollars is spent on fuel, 109 thousand dollars on conferences and meetings, 147 thousand dollars on computer supplies. They use waste 927 thousand dollars talking on telephone.

See page 98 of this year budget for the massive spending of public monies done at the Ministry of health in Belmopan. The hospitals, clinic and health program have their own budgets.

Page 100 of the budget shows 21 million dollars for medicine and technology.

And still they run short of medicines on a regular basic.

Imagine the possibilities for hustling with millions of dollars for medicine.

CALANEY FLOWERS-LIFE RUINED In 2012 Calaney Flowers was wrongfully charged for the murder of her former boyfriend. He died when he and his girlfriend overtook Flowers on their motorcycle. She was driving on Freetown Road, Belize City.

The charge should have been manslaughter because there was no evidence she intended to kill when her car allegedly hit the motorcycle.

Miss Flowers spent some five years in jail. Her trial which became a sensational event was held in 2017. She was defended by attorney Dickie Bradley and after many witnesses and legal back and forth Supreme Court Judge Gonzalez found Flowers not guilty of murder.

Miss Flowers left for the USA, her ex-boyfriend’s family pestered the government lawyer who did the case and Judge Gonzalez decision was appealed to the Court of Appeal. The government lawyer reported to the USA that Flowers was wanted in Belize and she was detained in the USA and deported back to Belize.

At the Court of Appeal on Monday 21st October the three Judges upheld Anthony Sylvestre’s legal argument that in Belize law, once a trial is completed the Director of Public Prosecutions has no authority to Appeal the final decision. Based on excellent legal research Sylvestre told the three Judges in his brilliant legal submission that under the relevant laws the D.P.P has no authority to appeal a fully completed trial. The D.P.P. can appeal in situation where lawyers submit brilliant legal submission, the D.P.P. arguments at the end of the prosecution evidence, but not at the end of a full trial.

Miss Flowers walked out of the Court of Appeal and was once again a free person. Her life has been ruined by one malicious act where the television media created a huge sensation by wrongfully reporting she intentionally killed her ex and then fled the scene. The D.P.P. office then charged for murder rather than vehicle manslaughter. Sending Flowers to jail for years before her trial.

Flowers lost her bank job. She had to quit evening classes for six form as she was in jail. She was deprived of raising her young child and she was

hounded out of a new life in the USA. All as a result of a wrongful charge of murder when she should have been on bail for manslaughter from 2012 Ed. Note: The opinion above is of the writer and not necessarily PUP policy.
