It is not the government’s responsibility to do this!” - Guardian Editorial, October 15, 2017 While young men were being shot down in the city streets, families struggled to make ends meet and many children went to sleep on the hard wooden floors of small shacks with their bellies empty, the UDP’s privileged rich crew including Juliet Thimbriel, Oj Elrington, Michael Peyrefitte and assorted hangers-on were living it up in South Beach.

There were parties at exotic nightclubs with top-shelf liquor on the table, tables piled with enough rich food to choke a hog or two and every luxury that extreme wealth can buy. It has become a common occurrence for these rich UDPs to throw their wealth in our faces. Last week it was the son of the Prime Minister, Anwar Barrow, sending us pictures of him driving a Rolls Royce in Beverly Hills.

All these members of the UDP elite and other including Dion Leslie, Dean Samuels, Andre Vega and various others have gotten their wealth under the UDP. Much of it is actually unexplain-

Today the members of the People’s United Party National Executive met at Independence Hall and decided on the deadlines for the National Convention set for November 26th in Belize City. The Convention will serve as a rally to energize the warriors and supporters of the PUP as we prepare for Municipal Elections set for March 2018.

At the Executive Meeting it was decided that (1) All members of the National Executive except the Secretary General, Chairpersons of the Regional Caucuses, Presidents of the Order of Distinguished Service (ODS), United Women’s Group (UWG), BelizeYouth Movement (BYM) and the Marshall’s Community Service Corps (MCSC) shall be elected; (2) Nominations for such officers shall be submitted in writing to the Party Chairman no later than 4:00 p.m. on Friday, October 27, 2017 and be accompanied by the written consent of the nominee and (3) Delegate lists from Constituency Committee Chairpersons as well as the ODS, UWG, BYM and MCSC shall be submitted to the Party Chairman no later than 4:00 p.m. on Friday, October 27, 2017.

It is incredible to many that Juliet Thimbriel is now a multi-millionaire who can wine and dine her flings in exotic locales, with limousines at her beck and call. When the UDP got into power she was just a common person. Now she owns properties and assets all over the country and can get senior public officers transferred with one phone call.

Before the UDP got into power, Anwar was just a poor confused kid not knowing what he would be in life. Thanks to his daddy, Anwar was able to cream off BTL to the tune of millions and he is now a multi-millionaire in his own right. All their stories are much the same – privileges accorded to them because of opportunities given to them under this UDP. And yet, incredibly, the UDP has announced its policy where opportunities are concerned in this week’s Guardian. According to the UDP, “At what point did it become the Government’s responsibility to create opportunities for people. It is not the government’s responsibility to do this.” Of course, they should have added that they were referring to normal people and not these elite UDPs who have been given every opportunity to gorge at the public trough.

It is frankly amazing that the UDP has no opportunities to provide for the young people on the street who are growing up in abject poverty and are frustrated to the point of violence, but opportunities abound for persons who are connected closely to them. There are many Belizean youth who will never go to school because their families cannot afford it. There are many who will struggle throughout their lives to put food on the table because under the UDP things have gotten so hard. There are no opportunities for these people. But for those others…the sky’s the limit.

The UDP will pay for its gluttony and its greed where the few are concerned, and for its neglect of the many. That…you can take to the bank.

Thursday, 12 October 2017 Following last week’s 9 murders, 4 of which happened within 24 hours of each other, this week has also been especially bad with the continuation of the spike in violent crime. From the beginning of the long weekend, up until press time, there have been 3 murders and 3 non-fatal shootings in the Belize City.

The unofficial count for this year stands at 114 murders, and it appears that the police high command, including Police Commissioner Allen Whylie, don’t have any answers to curb the spike in violent crime.

Thursday, 12 October 2017 On Friday October 6th, there was a decrease in the price of regular fuel at the pumps, and of course the UDP minions woke up long enough on social media to claim that we should be dancing in the streets and singing hallelujah in praise of Mr. Barrow and his administration. Incredibly however, the reduction was only $0.84 notwithstanding that at the previous price change on September 20th, the increase had been by $0.92 per gallon. Even with this reduction the gallon of regular fuel is still costing consumers $10.29 in the city and more in the districts.

Some had expected a more significant decrease given that the government had enthusiastically announced that once the importation of fuel from Venezuela resumed, prices would

illo reportedly left his family’s water business and went to a nearby shop. On the way back, he was hunted by a gunman on a bicycle who shot him multiple times to the head and back. He died 20 minutes later at the Northern Regional Hospital while he was undergoing treatment.

Then, about 17 hours later Justin Hyde was shot and killed in Belize City while he was a short distance away from his Curl Thompson Street home. He was riding on a bicycle and was in the company of 2 other young men when he was shot in the back. He died about an hour later.

28 year-old Julian Ebanks was the third person to be shot on Sunday, October 9.

The Hattieville resident was socializing in the Conch Shell Bay area. That happened at around 11:00pm, when he was socializing. Someone opened fire in his direction, hitting him in the left shoulder and cheek. Fortunately, he survived that shooting.

go down considerably. The fuel from Venezuela is obtained at world market prices and that price globally puts the cost of fuel in surrounding countries at several dollars less than what a gallon costs in Belize.

Instead of hearing the cry of the Belizean public and reducing the exorbitant taxes on fuel, the Prime Minister has dismissed the observation that this latest change is a meagre decrease. Rather, he has pointed to an upcoming decrease in premium fuel for the next shipment. However, a date for that change has not yet been announced so premium fuel still costs a stifling $11.92.

On the matter of the fuel taxes, the Dean Barrow Government has ignored the charge of the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) that it is engaging

Later that night, at around 8 p.m., there was yet another shooting on Lakeview Street. 26 year-old Javon Bradley was standing in front of a yard on that street, which is not that far from his home. An unknown gunman shot him in the abdomen area, and he reportedly had to receive urgent medical attention at the KHMH. While all this is happening, the Police continue to refuse requests for comment, opting for silence when the public requires assurance that they are attempting to do something or the order to reduce the number of crimes.

No Charges for US

Diplomat in Triple Fatality October 12, 2017 A US diplomat from the Embassy in Belize will not face any criminal charges after he was involved in an accident which killed a young mother, her 1-year-old child and her sisterin-law, and put another 6-year-old in the hospital.

That accident happened at around 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 7, between miles 2 and 3 on the George Price Highway. 30 yearold Samantha Castillo, a resident of Bella Vista, Belize City, was driving a blue and grey Honda Element SUV. She was heading to Belize City, and in the vehicle with her at the time was her 1-year-old daughter, Deanna Castillo, her sister-in-law, 23 yearold Martha Nayeli Vasquez and her 6-year-old niece. They had just left Old Belize after dropping off Martha Vasquez’s husband, Matthew Castillo, who’s also Samantha Castillo’s brother.

They were heading back home when a Grey Ford F-150 pickup truck slammed head-on into them, smashing the front portions of both vehicles. That pickup, a US Embas-

sy vehicle, was being driven by the 31-year-old US Diplomat, Justin Markele Guidry, and reports to Police are that he was attempting to overtake another vehicle, heading in the direction of Belmopan. It is unclear what happened, but the two vehicles had a head-on impact.

The crash killed Samantha Castillo and her daughter, Deanna, on the scene. Martha Vasquez suffered a large cut wound to the head and the 6-year-old niece suffered 2 broken legs. Both were transported to the KHMH, and about 3 hours or so after the accident, Martha Vasquez died while undergoing treatment.

No information has been released from official sources as to the whereabouts or the injuries Guidry may have suffered due to the accident. The grieving family was concerned that he did not offer any help and that he was allowed to leave the scene shortly after the incident. Police have not served Guidry with a notice of intend prosecution, because he is covered by diplomatic immunity. It is uncertain if he was required by Police to pro-

duce a specimen for blood alcohol testing, and it is also uncertain if he is still in Belize at this this time.

We Need to Stop the Violence!

In two weeks there have been 11 murders, numerous shootings and an overall spike in crime, especially in our urban communities. We have seen young people gone missing and dead bodies floating in our rivers. Since January there have been 114 murders.

Over the past six years 738 murders were reported and literally thousands of shooting victims have ended up in hospitals across Belize. On the weekends the emergency room at the Karl Heusner is swamped with gunshot victims and the resources of the KHMH Emergency Services are stretched to the limit.

In too many neighborhoods in our cities and towns crime has completely taken over once peaceful communities. Talk to people in some parts of southside Belize City and they will tell you that in the streets respect is earned through the barrel of a gun. Imagine what life must be like for those young people who live in these neighbourhoods?

For many of them their existence may only extend to their block or to their hood, for to go beyond may literally be a sentence of death. For sure the children in these neighbourhoods may not be able to find any good example for their own success beyond a life of crime and violence. As Belizeans we have to stop this. It’s on all of us to stand up, to speak out about crime and to force our government to do something about our failing criminal justice system.

While we have to continue to support the Police who protect us in our communities every day, we have to also call out all our civic, religious and community leaders. We all have to do more. Now I have said over and over again that we in the PUP will not play politics with crime. Past PUP leaders like Hon. Francis Fonseca have said and done the same.

We know that the problem of public safety must transcend party politics, but we also need the government to know that they are responsible for public safety and we have to call them out at this time for they are failing to keep Belizeans safe in their homes.

We can’t build safe communities and strong families if people don't feel safe in their homes and neighbourhoods. These are issues that we have to address urgently. The Barrow administration must lead the effort to stop the violence; they must put in place programs and initiatives that will bring opportunities in these communities. It has to be more than just cementing streets; we have to invest in our people.

We have to seriously look at a complete re-building of our south side communities in Belize City and move quickly to address the inequality that exists in those towns and villages that are quickly slipping into a culture of crime and violence.

To do this government must enlist community leaders across the board. We have to work together to improve the quality of education for our children and we have to work with the private sector to provide job training for students and young people of all ages in these communities and we have to do something about the minimum wage.

I believe we can do these things but again I say government has to lead. The Prime Minister must step forward and bring everyone to the table. We will only overcome the problem of crime and violence if we stand together as Belizeans and we have to do it together if we are to build a Belize that works for everyone.

They did not respond directly to inquiries from the press about Guidry’s diplomatic immunity from criminal prosecution, choosing instead to vaguely reference it, reminding that the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations affords immunity to diplomatic agents, and members of the administrative and technical staff of embassies.

Tulio Escobar, brother of Martha Vasquez, commented to the press, “…

We are mourning. The family is in big problems right now with this. We are just trying to support the family and support my mother who is taking a big hit; and my sister’s husband he is devastated. So, we are grieving right now.”

They have also expressed disappointment that the Embassy personnel has not reached out to them as yet, especially because Samantha Castillo, who died in the accident, is also a US Citizen.

Thursday, 12 October 2017 It should come as no great surprise when elements of the Belize Police Department, many times following instructions from the top brass, abuse the rights of Belizeans on a daily basis. It should come as no great surprise when members of the Police Department behave like thugs and disrespect other officers and civilians. It was no surprise when the SPU, under instructions from aspiring ComPol Edward Broaster, attacked peaceful protesters at the Tower Hill Bridge and even media personnel covering the event with tear gas and batons. See, this is the new Police Department, and many of those in authority are following the examples of their political bosses.

Neither the Police top brass nor the politicians who instruct them have an answer to the escalating violence in the city. Minister of Home Affairs Elrington explained that he is not concerned with crime in Belize because we have not reached the levels of Syria and Iraq. His junior Minister is equally clueless, mumbling nonsensical rhetoric when asked about crime, in between travelling and enjoying the perks of the job.

And because they have no answer, the UDP has resorted to doing what it does best, INSULT AND ATTACK. So they have gone after the wife of senior UDP Minister Michael Finnegan. Dianne Finnegan has been one of the strongest advocates for peace on the ground in the city, and has begun to call out government and the Police. UDP bully Juliet Thimbriel launched the attack, accusing Dianne Finnegan of sleeping around with the youth on the streets. Thimbriel also went after others who have been holding interventions with the youth in gangs in the city, accusing them of having ulterior motives.

This is the standard MO of the Party, and this time it is attacking the only persons who have been able through their tireless efforts to actually reduce violence in the city. Under the UDP there is no real intention to curb crime, since that crime doesn’t hit close to home.

This UDP government is awesome. It really IS about helping people. Like poor Andre Vega, for instance. This unfortunate youth was mistakenly given $400,000 by his daddy out of public coffers.

Not his fault, of course, that shit could have happened to anybody really. Honest mistake. And then, can you imagine that people actually wanted him to give back that $400,000? How rude! Only God knows where this struggling fellow would have gotten money to pay that back. But like a knight in shining armour Dean Oliver steps in and finds a way. Seems there was a judge who needed dwellings in the city, and coincidentally, Andre has almost completed his humble mansion just down from the PM’s house. A match was made, and GOB will reportedly now pay Andre somewhere in the region of $8,000 a month in rent for the judge, just to help a brother out, you know! I love stories with happy endings like this one. Not only does this deserving youth get to keep the $400,000 of our money, but we’ll now pay him an additional $8,000 a month to assist him through those lean months. Truly a government that works.

After seeing some photos and videos from a weekend in South Beach, I promised myself I’d use this forum to apologize publicly to Juliet for all the unkind things I’ve said about her. I don’t even want to repeat the words I’ve used to describe her in the past. I am mortified. Quite simply, Juliet’s pum pum rate has put me to shame. With great chagrin I am now forced to admit that she is a better man than I am. She’s got game, and I can only hope that when I grow up I’ll become a multi-millionaire too so that people can look beyond the ugly and nasty and straight into my heart which is sexy as hell.

What a hell of a thing it is when a senior Customs Officer can be transferred with immediate effect because well-connected UDPs don’t like the way they do their jobs. I’m hearing that when Juliet returned from South Beach after a weekend of partying her bags were searched at Customs. Apparently this former Senator thought that she was too big to be searched like other common folk, so she immediately reported it to bigger people in the Party. By the next day the senior officer was placed in charge of Cargo in the warehouse. WTF! And it’s not the first time. Just the other day this same Senior Officer was in charge of the entire North and he was the one who caught the Castro boys with all those cases of contraband Coronas. The next day he was transferred to the PGIA. And now, he’s taking care of the warehouse. I’m telling you this UDP is serious. The only thing which offers me any consolation is that Juliet picked a fine one to screw with this time. I’m betting this isn’t done by a long shot.

Our Attorney-General was also in South Beach with Juliet and some seriously fine babes, doing all the things wealthy, privileged people do. Unfortunately, somebody sent me two videos of Mike partying in the club. I deleted them immediately but those images have stayed with me. Mike! Mike!

Fat Joe looked cool throwing it down in the clubs. Even Biggie had this certain flair. Apart from the fact that you’re probably the size of Biggie and Fat Joe (when he was really fat) combined, you don’t have it. You looked really stupid. I was ashamed on behalf of fat people everywhere when I saw you throwing up gang signs and then doing the Humpty dance before chilling in the Buddha stance. Mike. Don’t do it again please. Ever.

Nowhere to Go… It’s not that I have anything personal against Oj. I know I’ve said some unkind things about him, but he makes it so easy to be mean. I just feel guilty sometimes. Arguing with Oj is like trading insults with a little girl in kindergarten. And it’s not only me thinking he’s a dim bulb. I’ve been hearing even DOB doesn’t want him anywhere around. We were excited in Pickstock recently because we hear he was so hot to run in there for the UDP. Hot damn, we even wrote up a letter supporting his candidacy and sent it to Dean Oliver. And now we hear it’s not going to happen because somebody’s been telling Dean all about how Oj loves to beat up women, and there is a credible report that he once did much worse to a well-known Belizean DJ…but that’s all I’m gonna say about that at this point. I swear this UDP got some characters going up for positions. I’ll get more into this next week I promise.

Ain’t nobody can tell me the UDP won’t call a double election in March. Those suckers are like pigs in a trough getting all they can while they can. Somebody was telling me that Mayor of Corozal Hilberto Campos has already installed himself as CEO in the Free Zone where he is getting $8000 a month. But of course, he’s still collecting his Mayor’s salary of $5000 a month. And that’s not counting allowances and vehicles and perks. My lerd. What is wrong with this people? Please, Mr. Dean, please call that double election in March. We’ll have a nice surprise for you.

en Español EDITORIAL LAS CALLES SE THE STREETS PINTAN DE ROJO RUN RED

T

his Editorial is being written against the backdrop of another bloody weekend. Two men have become statistics, their lives snuffed out by cold lead. They join eight others who died violently in the past twelve days. As we await confirmation from the Police Press Office, the unofficial murder count stands at 113. In 2016 there were 138 murders, and that was way up from the 2015 number of 119.

With absolutely no pleasure or gloating, it can be pointed out that the country is on track to break the record this year. And that has to be of real concern. As a tiny nation we have made international headlines as one of the most murderous countries in the world, ranked in the top ten for consecutive years.

Additionally, tourism is our only industry which continues to perform, and crime is a tourism killer. Already there is information from San Pedro that business owners are reporting drops in patronage because of violent crimes on the island that depends on tourism for its very survival. Last week, in front of observers, a young man was gunned down. Before that, a man was killed in a bar on one of the island’s busiest streets, in broad daylight. The country literally cannot afford any losses in tourism revenues coming in from la Isla Bonita, but as the island becomes better known as la Isla Peligrosa, that will be inevitable.

Incredibly, our policy-makers in Cabinet seem oblivious to the blood running in the streets, to the cries of the mothers and to the fear of our residents in communities struck by violence. We have seen no real initiatives put in place to address crime which is out of control. Instead of putting more boots on the ground, this year the Police Commissioner announced that there would be no new recruits passing out because they have no budget for it. There has been no allocation of new resources to the Police in their fight against crime, just a shuffling of personnel which has the feel of political manoeuvring.

There are two persons within the UDP Cabinet who are tasked with the running of the Police Department – senior Minister Wilfred Elrington and junior Minister Elodio Aragon Jr. Perhaps we should not be surprised at the impotence of the Police Department because recently Elrington revealed that crime isn’t really a big deal to him. Imagine your Minister of Home Affairs asserting in no uncertain terms that he is not at all preoccupied with crime because where crime is concerned we can’t compare with Syria and Iraq. That, quite frankly, is mind-boggling. But Elrington wasn’t done there. He explained that he is not at all concerned about crime in Belize because for the most part criminals are killing criminals so the wider society isn’t affected. Where murder is concerned young black men are killing other young black men so Sedi Elrington doesn’t see that as much of a problem. That is an incredible comment coming from the man responsible for citizen security in our jewel.

As we entered 2017, the junior Minister of Police was asked about the crime situation.

After all, where violent deaths are concerned, 2016 was second only to a particularly bloody 2012, and fully nineteen more than 2015. So Aragon brought out his tried and true spiel – “When we look at the crime statistics for 2016, I think that the last media interview I did, they asked me about the way forward and definitely we are coming up with a strategy that will be unveiled to the media and the public in the month of February. This will be a strategic plan to address in specific, gangs and gun-related crimes.”

We are approaching mid-October, and such a strategic plan has yet to be released – this plan which targets gangs and gun-related crimes. The only initiative where guns are concerned has been the huge increase in gun-licensing fees recently, but that most certainly is not a crime-fighting initiative because those cold-blooded killers on our streets do not carry licensed weapons.

There is no indication that the UDP is at all concerned about the violence in Belize which affects normal Belizeans on a daily basis. There is no political will to strengthen or enhance our Police Department and to make it more efficient and effective. The Commissioner of Police is a political puppet who is out of office more than he is in. He is held in no high regard by officers under him, but he has pleased his political masters so he will be kept around regardless of his incompetence. Corruption has now become the order of the day in the Police Department, a Department which does not move to investigate anything unless so instructed by the Prime Minister who is the self-appointed corruption judge and jury.

We are living in dangerous times. For now, the lawlessness serves the purpose of our politicians who act with impunity. But that lawlessness will turn on them with a vengeance at some point. It is only a matter of time.

As I come to the end of this Editorial, there is a report just in. Another man was just riddled with bullets and rushed to the KHMH where he died.

Como una nación pequeña hemos hecho titulares internacionales como uno de los países más sangrientos del mundo, clasificado en el “top ten” durante años consecutivos.

Además, el turismo es nuestra única industria que continúa con alto rendimiento, y el crimen mata el turismo. Ya hay información desde San Pedro que los dueños de negocios están reportando caídas en clientes por los crímenes violentos en la isla que depende del turismo para su supervivencia. La semana pasada, frente a espectadores, un joven fue asesinado a balazos. Antes de eso, un hombre fue asesinado en un bar en una de las calles más concurridas de la isla, en plena luz del día. El país literalmente no puede permitirse las pérdidas en ingresos del turismo de la Isla Bonita, pero a medida que la isla sea más conocida como la Isla Peligrosa, eso será inevitable.

Increíblemente, nuestros políticos en el gabinete parecen ajenos a la sangre en las calles, a los gritos de las madres y al temor de los residentes en las comunidades golpeadas por la violencia. No hemos visto ninguna iniciativa real puesta en marcha contra la delincuencia que está fuera de control. En vez de poner más policías sobre el terreno, este año el Comisionado de Policía anunció que no habrán nuevos reclutas graduándose porque no hay presupuesto para ello. No ha habido ninguna asignación de nuevos recursos a la policía en su lucha contra la delincuencia, sólo una reorganización del personal que da la sensación de maniobras políticas.

Hay dos personas dentro del gabinete del UDP que tienen la tarea de la ejecución de la policía – El ministro de alto rango Wilfred Elrington y el ministro adjunto Elodio Aragón Jr. Tal vez no deberíamos sorprendernos de la impotencia de la policía porque Elrington reveló recientemente que la delincuencia no representa realmente un gran problema para él. Imagínese nuestro Ministro del Interior afirmando en términos inequívocos de que él no está preocupado en lo absoluto por la delincuencia ya que en lo que se refiere a nuestra delincuencia no tenemos comparación alguna con Siria e Irak.

Eso, francamente, es alucinante. Pero Elrington no se detuvo allí. Él explicó que él no se preocupa por la delincuencia en Belice porque en la mayor parte de los casos los criminales están matando a los criminales por lo que la sociedad en general no se ve afectada. En lo que se refiere a los asesinatos, hombres jóvenes negros están matando a otros hombres jóvenes negros y por lo tanto Sedi Elrington no lo cree un gran problema.

Es un comentario increíble viniendo del hombre responsable de la seguridad ciudadana en nuestra joya.

A principios del 2017, al Vice Ministro de Policía se le preguntó sobre la situación de la delincuencia. Después de todo, en lo que se refiere a muertes violentas, el 2016 fue superado sólo por un 2012 particularmente sangriento y obtuvo diecinueve más que el 2015. En ese entonces Aragón sacó su viejo y cansado discursito – "cuando nos fijamos en las estadísticas del crimen para el 2016, creo que en la última entrevista de los medios de comunicación que hice, me preguntaron sobre el camino a seguir y definitivamente estamos elaborando una estrategia que se dará a conocer a los medios de comunicación y al público en el mes de febrero. Se trata de un plan estratégico para abordar en específico, las pandillas y los delitos con relación a armas de fuego".

Nos estamos acercando a mediados de octubre y este plan estratégico todavía no se ha lanzado, este plan, cuyos objetivos serían las pandillas y los delitos con relación a armas de fuego. La única iniciativa que se refiere a armas de fuego ha sido el gran aumento reciente en las tarifas de licencias de armas que sin duda no es una iniciativa de lucha contra el crimen porque esos asesinos despiadados en nuestras calles no llevan licencia de armas.

No hay ningún indicio de que el UDP se preocupa por la violencia en Belice que afecta a los beliceños normales a diario. No existe la voluntad política para fortalecer ni mejorar nuestro Departamento de Policía y hacerlo más eficiente y eficaz. El Comisionado de Policía es un títere político que está fuera de la oficina más de lo que se presenta.

Los oficiales subalternos no lo estiman, pero él ha complacido a sus amos políticos por lo que se le mantendrá en los alrededores independientemente de su incompetencia.

La corrupción se ha convertido en el orden del día en el Departamento de Policía, un departamento que no se pone a investigar cualquier cosa a menos que sea ordenado por el Primer Ministro quien se ha auto nombrado juez y jurado de la corrupción.

Estamos viviendo en tiempos peligrosos. Por ahora, la anarquía les sirve el propósito a nuestros políticos que actúan con impunidad. Pero esa criminalidad se les volteara con una venganza en algún momento. Sólo es cuestión de tiempo.

Al llegar al final de este editorial, llega un informe. Otro hombre ha sido acribillado a balazos y fue trasladado de urgencia al KHMH donde falleció.

Tuesday, October 10, 2017 The Belize City family of the troubled 22-year-old, Justin Hyde, continues to make burial preparations for his tragic passing. Hyde was shot and killed the Jane Usher Boulevard area, the community where he lived.

The incident happened on Monday, October 9, at around 9:16 p.m., at the corner of Curl Thompson and Levi Slusher Streets. Hyde was in the company of 2 other young men, and they were riding on separate bicycles. Hyde was down a few blocks away from his Curl Thompson Street home when a still-unidentified gunman opened fire on him. His mother told the press that the gunshots were loud enough for her and her children to hear from their house. They never expected to be told later that night that it was her youngest son, Justin, who was injured.

Hyde was injured in the lower back and he was rushed to the KHMH. Almost an hour later, Hyde passed away while he was undergoing medical treatment.

It is unclear why Hyde was murdered, but in the last 3 years Police started taking interest in him, believing that he was responsible or at least involved in 2 high-profile violence crimes. The first happened in April of 2015, at the Curl Thompson home of a 49-year-old mother. There were young children around at the time, and they were all watching TV when a gunman went all the way into their home and opened fire on the family. The mother was injured 6 times, and one of her son’s friends, a minor, was injured to the jaw and the hand. Shortly after that incident, Hyde was accused of being that gunman, and he was charged with two counts each of attempted murder, dangerous harm, and use of deadly means of harm.

In May 2016, he was also charged with other defendants for the offense of the use of deadly means of harm, for a shooting incident which left a man hospitalized. Police said that Hyde and others were in a vehicle fleeing the scene of that shooting. One man from that same vehicle reportedly fired gunshots at

Those closest to him did not attempt to justify the things he was accused of being involved in. Instead, they made the point that Hyde was a brilliant youth who tried and failed to escape the street life that was ever present right outside his door. He’s a graduate of the Saint John’s College, and he attempted to become a police officer, most likely following in the footsteps of 2 of his elder brothers. He reportedly took all the tests required to become part of a recruit intake shortly after finishing high school. He never ended up being chosen for the recruit training, and his family suspects that he was not given that chance because of his brother, Troy Hyde, who was already on remand at the prison, awaiting trial for the murder of Kareem Lopez, aka “Robbery”.

Hyde then started expressing himself as a musician with a talent for rapping. He started releasing songs and music videos for different pieces he collaborated on with other young rappers from the Jane Usher Boulevard area. They called themselves “All God’s Sons”, and at this time, a number of songs can be found on YouTube under his musical personality, “Et Dan”. It appears that he focused on the struggles he was experiencing as a youth and drew inspiration from them.

Because of the police attention for those 2 crimes he was charged with, he reportedly suffered regular police harassment.

Hyde leaves behind 4 children, ages 3 years-old to 3 months old. He reportedly tried to keep them away from that constant police attention he had to endure.

Seven months after a boycott of the Belize Police Department, the media is back at square one.

On Wednesday, October 11, the press embarked on a second boycott of the Department whose clueless Commissioner, Allen Whylie has refused to approve media interviews with commanders on major crime. This is despite the fact that murders have slowly been creeping up since July and frankly, spiralling out of control in the last three weeks in the Old Capital.

After the March boycott, there was a give and take which resulted in the promise of a more interactive and efficient Whatsapp Belize Media/Police group and the Commissioner deciding on when interviews would be granted (we do note this was reluctantly accepted by the media). But since September 20th, every single request for an interview has been turned down.

It therefore comes as no surprise that the media this week refused to cover the closing ceremony of a GREAT training that the Department holds in conjunction with the US Embassy and a handing over for the Belmopan Police formation courtesy the Taiwan Embassy.

The Substantive Minister of Police, Hon. Wilfred Elrington opposes media interviews. He feels that a press release is enough and protects the Department from jeopardizing cases in Court.

The problem is that nowhere in the progressive world does a Police Department get to interface with the media solely through a Whatsapp group that merely serves as red tape to getting out information to the public on a timely manner.

What the Department wants to institute is a direct attack on a free press when it refuses to allow the media to freely question the officers who are directly in charge of jurisdictions and who would therefore be more knowledgeable about cases. Instead, what the media is subjected to is a forum where the middle man has to painstakingly pass on questions from different media houses to the relevant of-

ficers and wait for their responses. Needless to say, the previous model where journalists got to speak directly with commanding officers meant they were getting the information real time.

Upon his return to the country at the beginning of October, the Commissioner says he was unaware that interviews were not being granted for two straight weeks. He said he would have to find out about the situation from the officer who was holding over.

We note that during one of the meetings between the media and the Police, the Commissioner recognized that officers need to be properly trained in communication skills. He undertook to seek such training for the officers who interact with the media. However, it appears that the promise was not kept. We hasten to add that this apparent shift in Police media relations was effected after Senior Superintendent Marco Vidal got himself in hot water over statements he made about his predecessor, ACP Chester Williams.

Another meeting with the Commissioner is long overdue but despite constant reminders to the Press Office, there has been no response on when such a meeting will be scheduled.

Thursday, 12 October 2017 The Hon. John Briceño has followed up on the resolution of the People’s United Party’s National Party Council to challenge the Prime Minister’s proposed appointment of Jamaican-American attorney Franz Parke as a justice of the Belize Court of Appeal. On Wednesday, October 11, 2017, Briceño filed a suit against the Attorney General of Belize on the grounds that the PM’s advice to the Governor General for Parke’s appointment is unconstitutional.

Briceño was first made aware of the Prime Minister’s intention to have his former classmate appointed as a justice of the high court in Belize by the Cabinet Secretary at the beginning of August.

The claim form outlines that Briceño was consulted by the Prime Minister at which time Briceño expressed his opposition stating that he did not believe Parke was duly qualified or met the high threshold to be appointed to the Court of Appeal.

Despite Briceño’s objection and that of the Bar Association of Belize as well as the Belize Network of NGOs, the Prime Minister has announced that he will proceed with the appointment. As a result, Briceño is asking the Court to make a declaration that Parke does not satisfy “the requirements of Section 101 of the Constitution to be appointed a justice of the Court of Appeal of Belize” and that “the decision by the Prime Minister to advise the Governor General to appoint Franz Parke as a Judge of the Court of Appeal for a term of five years is unconstitutional null and void.”

Reference is made to Parke’s curriculum vitae which Briceño found lacking and therefore requested further details of experience and suitability from the Prime Minister who said he had no additional information to share.

A copy of the Bar Association’s press release citing Parke’s unsuitability to hold the post of justice of the Court of Appeal and that of the Belize Network of NGOs sharing the same view also form a part of the court documents filed. So do copies of local articles referring to a story published in 2000 by a Miami paper which reported that Parke was the subject of a joint state and federal investigation while he was a senior state prosecutor at the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office. The Sun Sentinel wrote that a representative of the Drug Enforcement Administration said they were aware of the investigation.

Briceño points out that the new information further justifies his concern about Parke’s appropriateness to fill the post of justice of the Court of Appeal and has made reference to a relevant February 2017 case that went before the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ).

The CCJ had pointed out that “Section 101(2) of the Constitution indicates that only a high calibre appointee may be considered.” Asked whether he believes that Mr. Parke satisfies the criterion set out by the CCJ, Briceño stated “I do not believe that he does.” Parke has not practiced law in a Commonwealth jurisdiction for over three decades prior to his appointment.

What Does the Future Hold?

By Brittney Galvez Our youth are not just a part of our future - they are the future. They are the group in society that will ultimately predict and determine what the future will be. The youth population is the highest among communities which makes them very powerful in molding the future. They possess the power to elect governments, to challenge beliefs and change the world.

But despite being so influential, the youth are often the most under-represented and underestimated demographic of our community. We are often underrepresented within the Government, NGOs, churches, and the work force. This is because youth are not actively involved or made to understand their importance. For instance, within the work force there are very limited jobs available to graduating youths, as well as inadequate educational opportunities for underprivileged youth to attend college.

If we cannot ensure that every youth has access to and the means to afford an education, who will be the doctors, lawyers, teachers, politicians, and policemen of tomorrow? On the other hand, youth

Through suitable guidance and mentoring, youth can become the positive addition to society that the future needs. By nourishing the growth of our youths into fruitful citizens, we can allow for their strengthening and establishment of our future.

Youth involvement is important as it is the glue that holds the delicate fibers of society together. By not investing in youths, we are accepting defeat and forfeiting our future. If we do not teach them all that we know for them to carry on our traditions and cultures, we are inadvertently allowing genocide. YOU, CAN BE THAT GREAT GENERATION!

By Ivan Valencia Nelson Mandela once said “Sometimes it falls upon a generation to be great. You can be that great generation. Let your greatness blossom.”

You see ladies and gentlemen…we, enjoy freedom, that for which our most noble Father of the Nation fought. Unfortunately, though, we the young sometimes fail to appreciate that courageous man who ignited the fires of a Belizean identity. And I don’t blame you. We need to have that historical message spread. Surprisingly, we don’t even know our local history.

History is not at all boring. We well enjoy the company of our great folks. It seemed that the Belize that our older generations talk about is one which we clearly don’t see. When I listen to them, I hear about a tranquil and quiet Belize. I hear about a healthy and crime-less Belize! What catches my attention though is that I imagine seeing a Belize without barriers (fences in the local community). So, what happened to us?

The young generation is at

stake - the very livelihoods of those we grew up with in our very own neighborhoods. I am sure that we all see this, and I am sure we all care about this. In fact, we are talking about our beloved JEWEL. I know we the young people can sometimes be careless about what is happening outside our very windows, let’s be real. We are all human beings that experience disappointment BUT we can no longer afford to do nothing about it.

WE CAN NO LONGER AFFORD TO DO NOTHING ABOUT IT! We need to express and be part of the new PEACEFUL CONSTRUCTIVE BELIZEAN REVOLUTION. We need all hands-on deck; our future is at stake. If we expect a “Belize that Works for Everyone.” We must be part of this construction. The foundation was set on 21 September 1981, but the work did not end there, we must all join hands to design, to construct, to guide, and to preserve our Jewel.

Young people are often referred to as the future and the ones who will carry values on to the next generation. The term youth refers to ‘the period between childhood and adulthood - anyone between the ages of 15 and 30.’ But why are youth important? And why should we fight for their involvement in the development of our nation?

Youth are the backbone to the nation. They can change the future of any society with courage, focus and willpower. They are here to show us that which we have not been willing to look at within ourselves. Unfortunately, today we find the youth are often those who are more interested in other places and things which are not useful to them or to the nation. Many of them choose to spend their days doing drugs and playing video games. Others spend their nights partying and living it up, so to speak. More and more young men and women of this age group are sitting at home or getting into trouble instead of bettering themselves or going to work and earning an honest living. We must get control of this.

We must motivate our youth. We must teach responsibility and goal setting. If we do not, we will soon be supporting an entire generation of homeless and there will be more fatherless children. Things have to change, with our schools, with the older generation being good role models, with the older generation being mentors, and with the youth who are right now doing nothing.

You can allow yourselves to stay your course and do nothing or you can rise above what those around you expect and go get educated or get jobs. Show the older generation they are wrong about you. Let them know you have intelligence and skills. Show what you are made of. We are the ones responsible for what will happen tomorrow, and in order to have a safe world for our children we must change now, become empowered, learn right from wrong, and not be afraid to use our voices.

Clayton Greenidge Wins 2017 Mr. Belize Belize City, October 7, 2017 Body 2000’s Clayton Greenidge won the Belize Bodybuilding & Body Fitness Federation (BBBFF) annual Mr Belize competition at the Bliss Institute on Saturday night.

Greenidge had also won the 80kg category over Dion Ortiz, who took 2nd place, and Greenidge won the Masters Over-40 category hands down: he was the only competitor.

“The African”, Oyinkro “Power” Akpobodor, was 2nd overall, also winning the 90 kg. category against the defending 5-time champ Rigo Vellos of Spartan Gym in Corozal Town, who had to settle for 2nd place. Godfrey Alford took 3rd place.

David Requeña was 3rd overall for the Mr Belize title in the final pose-down. He had won the 75Kg category, with Ch5 technician Abu Sesay taking 2nd and Ralph Arnold - 3rd.

KREM TV host Annlyn Apolonio, a former track star and high school teacher, won the Bikini fitness category uncontested, she was the only Female onstage.

BARROW IS WEAK The impotence and apathy on display by Prime Minister Barrow and his government is surreal and totally unacceptable from all perspectives. This is evident by the written words in the UDP’s newspaper editorial of this week where the UDP is taking issue with their own Dianne Finnegan because she called them out for not creating opportunities for the youth. Incredibly, the UDP pronounced in the editorial that it is not the government’s responsibility to create opportunities.

This is a shocking revelation and one that should alarm all Belizeans. This is what the Government of Belize really believes. It is a government creating opportunities for their family, friends and cronies but not for the youth of this country. It is shocking because the level of crime in Belize has spiked and gang on gang violence is out of control; however, instead of discussing this or attempting to work with those who have been trying to rehabilitate the troubled youth, they in usual Dean Barrow and UDP fashion attack the messenger.

Beyond the state of affairs with crime, there are several other areas that have shown PM Barrow’s weak approach to governance. One just needs to look at the snail’s pace in which PM Barrow and his Attorney General are implementing the UNCAC. It is quickly approaching one year since Belize signed on, under duress and pressure from the Opposition, the unions and the business sector. Since then, the Attorney General sends out pretty press releases that are much ado about nothing. There should have been a self-assessment in August of what the environment is in Belize to implement anti-corruption programs yet none of the press statements issued have noted the status of the assessment. Instead, the Government will tell the people of Belize it is the process involved in the project that makes it move slow.

However, actions and commitment to anti-corruption steps are not solely dependent on the conclusion of the UNCAC project. For example, if PM Barrow and the Attorney General were genuine and serious, the Public Accounts Committee could hold their meetings in public. That was a decision that PM Barrow agreed to prior to 2015 but now sneakily uses the fact that there was a general election in 2015 so that decision was prior to that. He, his Deputy and his Attorney General blatantly take Belizeans for fools when they do things like this.

Government did not change in 2015 so why has their position changed, even after they signed unto UNCAC, that they

will not have the PAC meetings in public? Furthermore, the UNCAC project does not have to be completed for the government to amend the composition of the PAC so that it is not government led. A corrupt government cannot be the check and balance on itself. So, PM Barrow, Deputy Patrick Faber, Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte and the rest of their government are weak on implementing anti-corruption measures.

They are taking Belizeans for a ride.

Another step the UDP Government could have taken to demonstrate that they are serious in stamping out corruption is by investigating the many, many allegations of wrongdoing in the lands department. This too is not dependent on the completion of the UNCAC project. PM Barrow, Deputy Patrick Faber, Attorney General Peyrefitte, and the Minister of State Carla Barnett in equal measure with the rest of their colleagues are proving once again they were never serious about ensuring that the lands scandal would be properly investigated or investigated at all. Minister of State Carla Barnett still has not provided any update on the much touted land compensation assessment that was to have been completed in December of last year. The UDP government and their ministers have never been serious about arresting the level of corruption that has plagued their 3 terms in office. And the Belizean public will never know the real story behind why the former Minister of Lands Vanessa Retreage, was brought in by Barrow only for under a year and then left abruptly.

As for the Integrity Commission, this too to be effective does not require the completion of the UNCAC project.

If PM Barrow and his band of Ministers were being real and genuine, they could amend the composition of the Integrity Commission to ensure that it is not government led. A government which has accepted its Ministers operating with impunity is unfit to lead such a Commission and it is a blatant conflict of interest to have majority government appointed persons on the board.

The UDP government (PM Barrow and his Ministers) are a lot of glitter indeed with fancy talk but no real action.

When it comes to substance on arresting the corrupt activities within their own club, they are transparently weak. They are not about country. They are about preserving their power and not about providing opportunities for the people who put them there. It is time to vote the UDP out.

This week we visited areas of our town where the neglect is evident. Water is a human right, yet there are people in Benque Viejo Town who lack access to potable water resource. In addition to it, dark and bushy areas right in our neighbourhoods pose a threat to our safety.

Our town has been left behind while our neighbours across the border reflect massive economic growth and infrastructural development. We cannot stay behind anymore, but we have to unite, get on the ground and WORK! My friends, if we work together, we will achieve greater things for our town. Is the Belizean Identity Slowly Dying?

By Karim Adle I would like readers to stop and think thoroughly on what it is like to be a Belizean. The Belizean state of mind is that of a proud, hard working and fun filled nation. The Belizean way of life embodies hard work, dedication, and enjoyment. As Belizeans commemorated the month of September, one glaring fact unfolded.

Our national patrimony is in danger.

It all began way back when this UDP government began infiltrating our Belizean mantra to its core by illegally registering people across this country to pad the list and ensure a third consecutive term in government, albeit while just serving 9 years. You see, this was a long thought out and well orchestrated practice that began in Cayo West many years ago. People were brought in from neighboring Guatemala and registered in abandoned lots and at fake addresses. There are scenarios where many voters are registered within small homes, all signs of voter fraud.

This dangerous model of politics was quickly copied by other colleagues within Cabinet. You see, the process of gathering prospective voters from “cross” the line is rather costly and therefore, Ministers who are interested in winning elections are the ones with the deep pockets willing to shell out the money needed to foot the bill.

Most recently and perhaps the most hurtful image of the way the Belizean identity has diminished was the 10th of September parade in the town of Benque Viejo Del Carmen. Our national flag was nowhere to be seen and in fact, a Guatemalan hired marching band led the parade with a Guatemalan national flag in full flight. As a Belizean that image still haunts me. To think that our beautiful nation has been led to an abyss by our leaders is inexcusable.

We have gotten wind of a known Guatemalan individual illegally entering the list for Cayo West by the name of Erla Janel Sacul. This is just one case of many instances of voter fraud that have been carried out in Cayo West but most dangerous is the fact that the Cayo West model has been replicated across the country. In fact, Cayo North has seen its fair share of voter increase

thanks in large part to the ghost Minister who shows up every now and again footing the bill and registering individuals.

Cayo North also had its fair share of voter disputes in the most recent transfer period. The ironic part of this entire scenario is that the architects and designers of this dangerous model of “politicking” pointed fingers of voter fraud towards the PUP Cayo North committee and decided to challenge 11 transfers in the month of July. The Court struck out 10 of their challenges yielding a great defeat to the ruling government.

We are a proud country and we have many things to boast about, but our Government is not one of them. The UDP is riddled with corruption and we are plagued by the corrupt voters list that continues to be used election after election. Think about it, if you were the Prime Minister, enjoying all the perks would you do a voter re-registration that has been put off for over 10 years? I didn’t think so either! You see, this is a model that has benefitted his government and has allowed them to win. If it wasn’t bad enough that foreigners who do not live in Belize have a say in who governs us, these individuals will now get to vote if there were to ever be a referendum on the Belize/Guatemala dispute. With that being said, do you think these Guatemalan individuals will vote against their homeland and in favor of Belize?

We have gone from a boastful nation with wealth untold, to Guatemalan bands leading our national parades with Guatemalan flags on our soil. We have lost our ability to elect our leaders as now the illegal voters make up a great part of our voters list nationwide.

I hope this article written by a country loving youth inspires you to join the PUP in calling this government to conduct the already overdue voter re-registration. I am pretty sure the Father of the Nation never intended for us to live in a nation with leaders chosen from those who claim our sovereignty. Therefore, I urge you to come home to the party that gave us freedom as a people and Independence as a nation. Come home and let us rebuild from the ashes what this government has destroyed. Together as one people, one nation we can build a Belize that works for everyone!

JUST ANY JOB??

I chanced upon an intriguing yet difficult article in the BBC News website the other day. It was about a woman who had been a prostitute in her native New Zealand and in Australia for many years. While doing sex work for a number of years she was an advocate for the full decriminalisation of the sex trade, including the sex-work-formoney itself, as well as no criminal charges for pimps or brothel owners, so that everything sex trade related would be entirely legal.

Interestingly, when the legalization did come, and after years of bitter experience, she completely changed her mind, and she now argues that pimps, brothel owners and men who use prostitutes should be prosecuted. Her story has been reported by Julie Bindel, author of the text “The Pimping of Prostitution: Abolishing the Sex Work Myth.”

Here in Belize prostitution itself is not explicitly criminalized. However, pimping and living off of the proceeds of prostitution are outlawed, and new laws to criminalize the commercial sexual exploitation of children and minors and to increase penalties for rape and other sexual offences are in keeping with a great thrust to protect children and vulnerable persons.

In addition, there is strengthened legislation to prevent and punish trafficking in persons, especially anyone under the age of eighteen.

I am aware, however that there has been a group of persons who have advocated for more empowerment for sex workers, so that women involved in the sex trade can better protect themselves and have more autonomy. I am not sure if the grouping is still active.

There cannot be anything bad about more empowerment for persons who find themselves involved in sex work, whether by choice or by “accident,” as it were. But the story of the New Zealand woman came to me as strong confirmation that sex work is not just like any other job. Sex work or prostitution almost always come with some element of exploitation, and being exploited is not good for anyone. In her country if a woman was merely leaning against a wall in a short skirt, this would be enough for the Police to search her for condoms and to threaten and harass her. Here at home we have all these bars and nightclubs with so called waitresses offering services which are more than

merely serving beverages. But who is making most of the money?? And we all know the vulnerability of many because of their immigration status or lack of a work permit. It is all rife for exploitation.

In New Zealand there was even a Prostitutes Collective, but apparently all it did was to supply condoms. They did say they were fighting against the stigma and discrimination suffered by sex workers and that prostitution is just a job like any other. This somehow made what she was doing more palatable, she said. And decriminalisation came in 2003, allowing brothels to operate as legitimate businesses. This was the safest option for women in the sex trade, it was argued, and at first sex workers celebrated.

But in telling her story, the woman in New Zealand says she soon became disillusioned. She found from personal experience that the legalized sex trade only benefitted the pimps and the clients. “I thought it would give more power and rights to women. But I soon realized the opposite was true.”

Brothel owners were allowed to offer more “all -inclusive deals,” thus exploiting the women who worked there even more, as they lost the freedom to negotiate their own prices and services, and the supposed benefits of decriminalisation were lost.

She became confused and depressed, and when she finally quit the sex trade entirely, a doctor diagnosed her to have post-traumatic stress disorder.

She then became a feminist activist against the sex trade, and this helped her to heal. She related: “It takes a long time to feel whole again.” Prostitution does bring harm to girls and women, and so many are badly exploited and abused. While some may feel that sex work is just a job like any other, this is not true. From her own long and terrible experience, the New Zealand sex worker helped to debunk the belief that sex work is “neutral.” Any way in which the pimps and brothel owners can exploit their workers, they will take advantage of. Belize would do very well not to follow these “liberal” countries where prostitution is concerned. Real empowerment for girls and women means not having to use their bodies to earn a dollar or two.

Surely it is not just any job. Empowerment - not exploitation!!

The Holy Redeemer Credit Union hosted its zone elimination competition for the Fr. Marion Ganey Quiz Competition in collaboration with the BHS Honor Society on

Friday, October 6, 2017.

Eleven schools from the Belize District were invited to send Std. 5 and Std. 6

students to compete in general knowledge questions on some amazing and trail blazing

fun facts about the HRCU. Six schools ended up participating in the 2017 competition.

Belize Elementary School’s Rayne Longsworth, Hattieville Adventist’s The list included:

Auriel August, Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic School’s Aryan Chugani, St. Joseph

Roman Catholic School’s Ashanty Mayen, St. Mary School’s was represented by Hazey Perez and Jahir Young from Grace Primary School.

The competition opened with a short program, allowing for members of the Belize Credit Union League to be acknowledged. Mrs. Corrine Fuller led with the St. Francis

of Assisi prayer and HRCU Director Mrs. Wendy Castillo explained some benefits of

saving and saving from early! “It’s never too early to start learning all about money and

how to save it!”

After the first two rounds of tough competition, three schools remained: Belize

Elementary School, St. Mary’s, and Hattieville Adventist. In the final portion of the the reserve questions were even tougher, but at the end of those last two competition,

rounds Ms. Rayne Longsworth of Belize Elementary emerged victorious.

HRCU awarded some fantastic prizes to all three finishers: Rayne Longsworth of

BES, 1st Place, won $1,500.00 for her school, a calculator, a fan plus $300.00 and a

Galaxy tablet for herself! Auriel August of Hattieville, 2nd Place, won $1,000.00 for her school, a calculator, a fan plus $200.00 and a Galaxy tablet for herself; and Hazey Perez

3rd place, won $500.00 for her school, a calculator, a fan plus $100.00 and of St. Mary’s,

a Galaxy tablet for herself.

Kakistocracy...

Can you believe that this really is a word? A friend of mine posted it on Facebook this weekend and of course, being the irreverent cuss that I am, I immediately liked it because it sounds so damned sleck. It just comes off as nasty, like something done in the dark of night that is outlawed in most countries. I practiced a lil ‘kakistocracy’ last night, but it’ll be my dirty little secret till the day I die.

LOL. But thanks in large part to another irreverent old cuss Charlie Woods, God rest the dead, I still have an insatiable appetite for learning and I’d never heard the word so I looked it up. It means Government by the least qualified or most unprincipled citizens. And there was a picture of Dean Barrow and his Cabinet given as an example of a kakistocracy. Okay maybe I made up that last part, but you get the point, right?

I get the bus most mornings because I can’t afford to pay for gas. Commuting has become too expensive. There’s a lot of us in the same boat, or old bus as the case may be. Most mornings I walk to work from the terminal.

I say most mornings because for a few days after payday I splurge and actually catch a taxi instead of walking. The taxi thing is an experience for me because I get to listen to these guys vent. Most of them are bitter and angry because they are barely making ends meet.

They are angry because many of our city streets are in terrible conditions and damage their vehicles – damage they can’t afford to fix. They are angry because the price of fuel is so high that they make little off the few runs they get a day. They get fewer runs every day because the cost of living is so high that people are saving their taxi-fares and walking. Not

everyone can splurge on taxis like I do a couple days a month. It’s no joke. The frustration is real. People are struggling out here. Normal Belizeans are struggling.

On the days I walk to work, for just that moment, I am saddened by what I see around me.

If there’s been any bit of rain, the streets near the terminal will be flooded – like completely flooded, because the drains haven’t been cleaned for some time now. The water doesn’t flow. Most of the grills covering the drains are broken, and since the water covers the sidewalks too it is dangerous.

Very many of the streets around the terminal are full of gaping potholes, testament to the poor job down by the Belize City Council.

As I move on to Orange Street and then Albert and Regent Streets I can see the homeless lying on the sidewalks, next to vendors putting out their fruits for sale. Quite a few of them have made the sidewalk in front of the Commercial Center their abode for the night, right under a Belize City Council sign stapled onto a post – it reads Welcome to Beautiful Belize.

I’m writing this and I am in sort of a funk. I can sense my writing doesn’t have its usual exuberance.

Maybe I’m just getting old. Maybe I’m just being worn down by all the shit I see around me. I make a decent salary, and it’s a struggle to get by. I can’t do the things I used to do, can’t buy the things I used to buy, can’t provide for my family as much as I would like to. And there are so many Belizeans making much less than I do. How do they feed their children and send them to school and put clothes on their backs and shelter over their heads? I understand the frustration I see every day because I feel it too.

We are in a country being run by Kakistocrats – the ineptest and most corrupt and unprincipled citizens sit in Cabinet every week and do nothing to make our lives better. They are all for themselves. Why do you think they are all rich and we all struggle?

Every second of every minute of every hour of every day (except for when I’m sleeping of course) I wish bad things on these arrogant asses who run things in Belize. And that’s as real as it gets.

Last week some of our residents in Orange Walk Town were affected by the heavy rains which fell, and I am happy to report that our work crews were able to assist them almost immediately. As I do every time, I give kudos to our hard-working and dedicated OWTC staff who always answer the call. I also must acknowledge the work of our Councillor Josue Carballo and his team who were able to assist more than 30 families devastated by flood waters in the community of Santa Marta.

They were out there throughout the night handing out essential items to those families, not for the glory but because it is what we are here to do, to assist those in need. So I’ll take this opportunity to thank them and also thank those who donated supplies to help the cause.

Community service has to be at the heart of everything we do. I know that I got into politics because I want to make a real and positive difference in the lives of our residents.

And every single time that as Mayor I am able to play a role in the benefit of our people, it motivates me to do more. It is people of that calibre that we have chosen to continue the work here in Orange Walk, work that has transformed our community and has brought us closer together as a people across political lines. I can say with all confidence that there have been close ties forged between the Council and residents, and we enjoy great support from our partners in the community because they know that they can trust us to get the work done.

I found it incredible that the Area Representative for Orange Walk East was boasting about the amount of vehicles he took with supplies for the people of Santa Marta. I cannot comprehend why that would even be an issue. I will be the first to thank him for ensuring that some needed

supplies were received by residents. That is a wonderful thing.

I am happy that he was able to tap into NEMO stores to help persons in need. See, this is not about Elodio Aragon Jr. It has never been about him, and will never be about him. It should be about helping the people. And any help for the people is appreciated. So please, Mr. Minister, keep the assistance flowing. You have access to Central Government money and resources, and you are getting a fat salary and community money to help residents of Orange Walk East. So by all means do what you were elected to do.

This week I want to take time to encourage our residents to always look out for others in need.

We must be our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers. We are blessed to be a part of a tightly-knit community of workers. We work hard to provide for our families and to make ends meet despite the challenges we are facing today.

But there are many persons who are still living in poverty, and persons who need our help. Sometimes we don’t realize the situations in which some people live until we come face to face with it, as was the case with Santa Marta. The flood was unexpected, and there are persons who lost everything in their homes.

Many of us are only a disaster or a sickness away from poverty.

I’ve heard that said a lot recently and I know it to be true. So let us try to look out for one another as much as possible, and help those less fortunate whenever we can.

We truly never know when it will be out turn and somebody will be looking out for us.

Finally this week I want to take time to acknowledge a friend who has passed on after being ill for some time. Eugene Palacio was a great friend to the Orange Walk Town Council, and as Director of Local Government supported us at all times. I was saddened to hear of his death, a reminder to all of us that life is fleeting and it is up to all of us to leave this world a better place than we found it.

OPINION OUT Marshalleck Stadium the $2M Remix

The current situation is concerning, because this abandoned lot has become a source of bugs, rodents and mosquitoes.

Completion of the Marshalleck Stadium is just a dream.

Some acronyms used to describe this lot on Social Media are: “Cement Monument”, “Modern Ruins”, “Erwin’s Mayan Ruins”, “Benque Jungle”, among other names.

In 1972 a Basketball Court was added to the Marshalleck Football Complex and Facilities, under the PUP Mayor Aliff Coleman.

In 1991, construction of bleachers and installation of lights was added to Marshalleck Football field under the PUP Mayor Giovanni Pinelo.

In 2014, the reconstruction of Marshalleck Stadium started. A budget of $5.6 million of Belize dollars was assigned. It was expected that the Marshalleck Stadium on completion will look like the picture shown (Diagram 1).

The Project stopped in 2015 after the General Elections. It has been abandoned till now.

Dear Editor Marshalleck Stadium was built in 1950. The name derives from Corporal Marshalleck who was largely responsible for clearing the tropical bush to create the Stadium. It has been the home stadium of the Belize Premier Football League Teams like: Juventud Benqueña Football Club, Benque FC, Verdes FC, etc. It has been the venue for local and inter-district competitions, games from Premier League and Super League and International Matches. It was the venue for games to be played for the annual July Benque Fiesta.

People in Benque Viejo del Carmen are demanding a Financial Report on Marshalleck Football Complex and Facilities construction.

The reality is that there is no Marshalleck Football Field yet, three years after the project started.

People are speculating that construction will re-start a couple of months before Municipal Elections just to trick Benqueños again into voting for the present UDP administration.

It is rumoured that an additional 2 million dollars has been allocated to Minister Contreras to conclude this Project. It is also rumoured that the construction company owned by Minister Montero’s brother will get the contract. This new adjusted project will only complete two of the original three floors building projected.

It is unacceptable that government allocate more millions for a project that should have been completed with the initial budget. Of course, the UDP needs a new piggy bank to fund the next Municipal Elections. The youth and football players in Benque should not allow themselves to be blindsided again.

It is a shame that our taxpayers will pay once again for a budget that was misused. What will happen? You can reach your own conclusions. Have a blessed day my beloved Belizeans.

Miami 6 OCT 2017 – Al menos 22 personas han muerto en Centroamérica por el paso de la tormenta tropical Nate que avanza este jueves hacia México y EE UU. Nicaragua es el país más afectado con 11 fallecidos y siete desaparecidos. 10.000 personas se han visto afectadas por inundaciones, deslaves, caminos destruidos y casas dañadas.

En Costa Rica, ocho personas han muerto, entre ella una menor de tres años, y 15 están desaparecidas. Hay más de 5.000 evacuados, inundaciones y daños en la infraestructura del país.

El Gobierno ha declarado el estado de emergencia nacional, ha cerrado las escuelas y suspendido los servicios "no esenciales".

La tormenta es uno de los peores desastres naturales de los últimos años en Costa Rica. En algunas zonas del país han caído en las últimas 24 horas la lluvia equivalente al promedio de todo octubre pasado, según las autoridades. Comunidades enteras y comercios han quedado inundados, algunos hasta la altura de los techos, así como también plantaciones agrícolas, a lo que se suman puentes derrumbados y carreteras seriamente afectadas. Los aeropuertos siguen funcionando, aunque varias de las aerolíneas han cancelado al menos una veintena de vuelos este jueves como medida de prevención.

Nate, que seguirá provocando fuertes lluvias en Costa Rica al menos hasta este viernes, ha dejado también tres muertos en Honduras. La tormenta tropical, que produce vientos máximos sostenidos de 65 kilómetros por hora, con rachas de mayor intensidad, es la decimoquinta de esta temporada de huracanes

en el Atlántico.

Nate cruza el noreste de Nicaragua y el este de Honduras y saldrá nuevamente al mar Caribe. Allí, podría fortalecerse y dirigirse hacia la península de Yucatán, en México, donde podría impactar a últimas horas del viernes, según el pronóstico del NHC. Los meteorólogos estiman que, tras salir al golfo de México y antes de alcanzar EE UU, Nate podría convertirse en un huracán.

Mientras tanto, dejará acumulaciones de lluvia de hasta 762 milímetros en Nicaragua, de 508 milímetros en Costa Rica y Panamá, de hasta 508 milímetros en Honduras y Belice y hasta 203 milímetros en zonas orientales de Yucatán (México).

La actual temporada de huracanes está siendo muy activa en la región con cinco de estos fenómenos en las categorías de mayor escala (3, 4 y 5). El mayor número desde 2005, con la formación de Harvey, María, Irma, Lee y José.

IVÁN VELÁSQUEZ: NUEVA SOLICITUD DE VISA SE ENCUENTRA EN TRÁMITE

Iván Velásquez, jefe de la Cicig, dijo este martes que se ha efectuado un nuevo trámite de renovación de visa ante autoridades de Migración de Guatemala.

Prensa Libre, Guatemala 10 de Octubre de 2017 La Subdirección de Privilegios e Inmunidades del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores revocó la visa del jefe de la Cicig por un mal proceso en la solicitud de la renovación del documento, sin embargo, esto no significa que el comisionado debe abandonar el país.

El documento SUPEI-287-2017, firmado por Myrian Pinto, subdirectora de Privilegios e Inmunidades, señala que “la solicitud de visa no fue formulada por la persona competente”, lo que a criterio del excanciller Édgar Gutiérrez, significa que debe enmendar el trámite sin que signifique el abandono del país.

La carta, a la que tuvo acceso el diario La Hora, cita: “Le ruego informar esos extremos al interesado y dar las debidas consideraciones a lo aquí comunicado, en virtud de que las autoridades migratorias del país han sido notificadas de esta situación”.

Velásquez, quien presentó este martes el informe de labores de la Cicig, dijo que ya se efectuó un nuevo trámite para la renovación del documento.

“Me había sido renovada por casi 11 meses, el 4 de octubre, y ayer recibí una comunicación, que había sido revocada porque no se había solicitado adecuadamente, o porque no se habían utilizado los canales correspondientes, que son los mismos que se han utilizado anteriormente”.

“Hicimos nuevamente la solicitud el día de hoy y esperamos que no haya ninguna dificultad”, añadió

Erróneo mensaje diplomático Para el excanciller Eduardo Stein, la validación de la visa al ser mal solicitado se debería enmendar sin necesidad de que se revoque el documento. El actual de la Cancillería en este caso es “un mensaje hostil”.

Stein asegura que es una obligación del Estado de Guatemala darle todas las facilidades al Comisionado, porque eso está dentro del Convenio de la ONU para la creación de la Cicig.

No hay ilegalidad “La revocatoria de visa no implica la ilegalidad de la presencia del Comisionado, a no ser que su visa actual esté vencida, en ese caso tiene un tiempo perentorio para renovarla”, dice el excanciller Fernando Carrera.

Prensa Libre confirmó que la visa de Iván Velásquez vence el 19 de octubre, por tal razón Cicig había gestionado la renovación con antelación.
