Every week since last November 8, 2018 the Prime Minister most likely has prayed that this nuclear bomb would detonate in a space far from dear Belize and his United Democratic Party. But no, it has literally taken sanctuary here and drip drip it is becoming the UDPs proverbial water boarding. In this one Belize is large for the wrong reasons. The largest real estate fraud in United States history occurred on Belizean soil.

Belizeans, when the Honorable Prime Minister, stealthily or openly, commits our country to pay compensation for persons he deemed as victims to save Belize’s financial dignity, there is a gargantuan problem. Weekly, we see the newspapers with FULL PAGE Ads where homes are being sold off to auction. Why isn’t there help for them? Our housing sector is obviously not doing well and it is not the fault of individual pockets. This type of fault

So on May 6, under the cloak of our people going into a referendum for the existence of their loved country, the PM slips in that, by the way, he was summoned to the United States Embassy; our Prime Minister officially left Belize soil without informing his bosses, the Belizean People. In a teleconference, he then pleads Belize’s case with the Federal Trade Commission(FTC) of the United States of America. This is embarrassing from any angle.

The percolation does not cease there. In comes Mark Espat who now accompanies the Governor of the Central Bank to a trip purportedly to mend this sore that sincerely looms of a financial cataclysm for Belize. Again, when our Prime Minister will put forth victim compensation for foreigners, heavy questions erupt by default.

Did Belize have a sovereign guarantee on Sanctuary Belize or whatever its name is?

What is the dollar amount of the Atlantic International Bank Limited exposure?

In the unwinding of the Atlantic International Bank Limited, what happened to all their assets?

Given that this is in the millions of dollars, will the House of Representatives approve this, out of the blue, expenditure?

In 2008, the Prime Minister

and the UDP were swept into office largely on a campaign on the notion that the PUP had paid for the Universal Health Services which was a private entity and not approved by the National Assembly. The people at that time were going to receive a hospital that today is still functional.

Last question: What does Belize receive with the Sanctuary Bay victim compensation?

Drip drip drip!!! This saga has tentacles and each tentacle has suckers. The Belizean people need answers and they definitely do not wish to pay for this.

UDP INTERNAL STRIFE Thursday, May 16, 2019 Since the end of the November 2015 General Elections, the United Democratic Party has had a tunnel-vision to ‘who will be the next Leader of the UDP?’ For all intents, PM Barrow was a lame duck Prime Minister immediately. He became game for the UDP Piranhas and this has been taking our jewel down the path of absolute corruption and now in the hands of an International Court. One can only shiver at that thought; but then we can vote.

Name a UDP representative.

Would you like that person as your next Prime Minister? Brrrrrrrr,

One day after the ICJ referendum, with gloves daubed with honey and dipped into glass shards, John Saldivar in other words asked the Prime Minister to move out of the way for new leadership. The battle for UDP leadership is poised to be a nasty one.

The problem here is that it is right at the time when Belize as a country is destined to go under litigation and when we need ALL of our leaders’ time in job creation and nation building.

As if that is not enough, constituency battles have lines drawn and only mudslinging conventions will settle these. For example, in the Caribbean Shores constituency we have a bare-chested push by Santino Castillo to take back his past seat whilst in a colour-blind surge a Lila comes from somewhere to claim her space—a la Guatemala style.

Oh! Then there is the orient express who wishes to show that the rubber stamp Senate has thought him more than being in a hot oily kitchen. But hold on, there is a Darrell Bradley that was already the standard bearer. There is plenty in this race to consider. For the majority, it is actually easy since their Representative Kareem Musa is going nowhere; some UDP though do not have any 20-20 vision whatsoever.

PUP is ready to win and ready to lead. There is no doubt.

ESPAT VS. PEYREFITTE Thursday, May 16, 2019 Many of us will remember the raucous that occurred at the House of Representatives on August 26, 2019 as Hon. Julius Espat was thrown out of the chambers. At that time, he and some journalist were stripped of their dignity and carried out by the security forces. The Speaker of the House had asked that a Representative of the ruling party to ‘name’ Hon Julius Espat in a procedural statement which would then allow the duly elected representative for Cayo South to be thrown out of the House. As History will have it Hon. Julius was forcibly removed in a scene that is definitely in the House of UDP infamy.

er and pull it to the right. The matter now was just been ruled upon by the Court of Appeal. The following is a summary and actual words in the ruling.

The Plaintiff is Hon. Julius Espat.(Appellant) The Defendants are the Speaker at the time Hon. Michael Peyrefitte(1st Respondent), Eddie Webster, Clerk and the Attorney General of Belize.

The matter that was being appealed was that the Supreme Court has thrown out the case of Hon. Espat thrown out of the House and suspended. Hon. Espat was putting forth that the process used to have him removed and suspended was generally flawed.

when he struck out the claim of the appellant on the general principles of the separation of powers. He correctly accepted that parliamentary privileges are granted the National Assembly and the Speaker. However, the trial judge erred when he stopped short of considering where there would be a need for trial in construing Order 44 of the Standing Order and Section 73 of the Constitution, whether a vote was required for the proposed suspension.

Further, if that issue was determined in favour of the appellant, whether the Speaker breached the provisions of the Constitution and contravened the constitutional rights of the Appellant.

This is permissible under the exception of the general rule of the doctrine of separation of powers.”

The matter was sent back to the Supreme Court for hearing of the strike out application before a different trial judge. This is giving the Rule of Law it due course.

THE AIBL SOAP OPERA

he drama unfolding in the Atlantic International Bank Limited (AIBL) case seems like it’s straight out of a poorly scripted soap opera. There are recent reports that Senator Aldo Salazar was detained and questioned, at the request of the US Federal Trade Commission, in regard to the role Atlantic International Bank Limited played in the Sanctuary Bay real estate scam. Senator Salazar is listed as the legal representative for AIBL. Luckily, the Senator, it seems, was more than happy to share copious amounts of information and will more than likely be called to testify at hearings. It appears that there is a civil suit seeking damages for the victims of what is known as the biggest real estate fraud of its kind.

One of the many functions of the Central Bank of Belize is to be the lender of last resort and at the same time the regulatory body for the financial sector. In simple terms this means that the Central Bank can extend credit to financial institutions that are experiencing unusual circumstances and are unable to get credit elsewhere and whose collapse would have adverse effects on the economy. It also always has the responsibility of monitoring and the supervision of all financial institutions ensuring that they operate within the standard rules and regulations of this sector.

Certainly, the shortcomings of the Central Bank of Belize in this sad fiasco are glaringly apparent.

There seems to have been very little supervision and due diligence on the part of the Central Bank, and one is left to question the motive for the lax attitude. Could it be that this financial institution enjoyed special privileges because of its political connections? The fact remains however, that the closure of the AIBL has serious repercussions on the Belizean economy. It could potentially implicate its sister company Atlantic Bank Limited and risk their corresponding banking relationships.

Even the Central Bank’s few and tenuous corresponding banking relationships may very well be in serious jeopardy.

The PM recently announced that he has met with the US Charge d’Affaires. The discussion centered on a purported “settlement.” He said “the question is how to reconcile the FTC’s interest…victim compensation and our interests…” The PM went on to say that he wants “whatever cloud the AIBL saga has caused to be lifted from over our jurisdiction.” The US investors have been defrauded over US $100M, allegedly with the help of the AIBL. This is a price that Belizeans must now pay for the Central Banks’ negligence.

Belizeans are going to be left footing yet another bill for yet another UDP Government disaster.

This is the price we must pay Uncle Sam so that we do not lose corresponding banking relationships and receive yet another black eye before the international financial community. For this one…. the truth is unfolding… appears it’s far beyond what the eye can see and will catch several big fishes.

This saga reminds us of one of those well-scripted soap operas on Netflix that develop the incestuous relationships in which financial institutions and privileged families and cronies participate.

This is another expensive band aid that tries unconvincingly to cover the gaping truth that is the ineffectual governance in our country. It seems that time and again Belizeans must suffer and pay through the nose for the blunders, arrogance and gross incompetence of the current UDP Government of Belize. Basta Ya!

l drama que se desarrolla en el caso de Atlantic International Bank Limited (AIBL, en inglés) parece directamente sacada de una telenovela mal escrita. Hay informes recientes de que el senador Aldo Salazar fue detenido e interrogado, a petición de la Comisión Federal de Comercio (FTC, en inglés) de los Estados Unidos, en lo que respecta al papel que Atlantic International Bank jugó en la estafa inmobiliaria de Sanctuary Bay. El senador Salazar figura como representante legal de AIBL. Afortunadamente, el senador parece estar más que contento de compartir abundantes cantidades de información y será más que probable que sea llamado a testificar en las audiencias. Parece haber una demanda civil en busca de daños para las víctimas de lo que se conoce como el mayor fraude inmobiliario de su tipo.

Una de las muchas funciones del Banco Central de Belice es ser la entidad crediticia de último recurso y, al mismo tiempo, el organismo regulador del sector financiero. En términos simples esto significa que el banco central puede extender el crédito a las instituciones financieras que están experimentando circunstancias inusuales y no pueden obtener crédito en otros lugares y cuyo colapso tendría efectos adversos en la economía. También tiene la responsabilidad de observar y supervisar a todas las instituciones financieras asegurando que en todo momento operan dentro de las normas y regulaciones estándar de este sector.

Ciertamente, las deficiencias del Banco Central de Belice en este triste fiasco son manifiestamente evidentes. Parece haber muy poca supervisión y debida diligencia por parte del Banco Central, y cabe preguntarse el motivo de la actitud laxa. ¿Podría ser que esta institución financiera en particular disfrutaba de privilegios especiales debido a sus conexiones políticas? Sin embargo, el hecho es que el cierre de la AIBL tiene serias repercusiones en la economía de Belice. Potencialmente podría implicar a su compañía hermana Atlantic Bank Limited y arriesgar sus relaciones bancarias correspondientes.

Incluso las escasas y débiles relaciones bancarias correspondientes del Banco Central pueden estar en grave peligro.

El Primer Ministro anunció recientemente que se ha reunido con el encargado de negocios estadounidense (US Charge d’Affaires). Este es un precio que los beliceños ahora deben pagar por la negligencia del Banco Central.

Los beliceños se van a quedar pagando la cuenta por otro desastre del gobierno UDP. Este es el precio que debemos pagar al tío Sam para que no perdamos las relaciones bancarias correspondientes y recibamos otro ojo amoratado ante la comunidad financiera internacional. Para este.... la verdad se está revelando... parece mucho más allá de lo que el ojo puede ver y atrapará a varios de los peces gordos. Esta saga nos recuerda a una de esas telenovelas bien escritas en Netflix que desarrollan las relaciones incestuosas en las que participan las instituciones financieras y las familias privilegiadas y los compinches.

Esta es otro parche de curita costosa que trata de manera poco convincente cubrir la enorme verdad que es la ineficaz gobernanza en nuestro país. Parece que una y otra vez los beliceños deben sufrir y pagar a través de la nariz por los errores, la arrogancia y la crasa incompetencia del actual gobierno de Belice. ¡Basta ya!

Message from Hon. John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition Hi Everybody. With the ICJ referendum now behind us it is time to look ahead. Yes, we are satisfied that once again we carried out a peaceful referendum in what many would consider a hard-fought campaign.

Yes, it was divisive, even in our own People’s United Party and while as a Party we disagree from time to time on certain issues, make no mistake, we are united in our cause to rid our country of this corrupt and incompetent UDP government.

Of course, as a nation we must now come together to ensure that we are represented by the best team of attorneys at the ICJ. We also expect to hear no less than the assurances of the so-called “iron clad” case to be presented by Belize’s legal team at the ICJ. In the PUP our job going forward is to ensure that the legal team is clear in the understanding that we must maintain all that is rightfully Belizean territory. As leader of the PUP I commit to making sure that we defend our position of not one square centimeter. So, I will be vigilant in the process and work closely with the team of advisors and legal experts as we prepare the legal work needed to defend our position at the ICJ. As we look to the coming months, we in the PUP will also be focusing with renewed energy on the village council and the general elections.

First, we will continue the work to get qualified Belizeans to register and we will fight in court if we have to, so that those 3,000 Belizeans who were disenfranchised from taking part in the referendum are placed back on the voters list. The PUP has and always will fight for this democracy and so we will defend the voting rights of every qualified Belizean.

Second, we will not be distracted by the noise makers who seek to encourage division and finger pointing. Our message is clear the PUP is about betterment for all our people. Together we will work to get that message out while reminding Belizeans of all that has gone wrong in Belize over the past ten years.

Today so many of our people are poor, so many of our young people are dying violent deaths and so many or our children are not going to school. Belizeans deserve better and for sure they deserve a better government. We have work to do on behalf of our people and so we need to get back to reality.

We will work to ensure that the next steps in the ICJ process are followed, participating as equal partners in the process. We will also encourage the government to include input from the social partners and organizations like the Peace Movement, but most important, we will continue to hold this corrupt and incompetent government accountable while at the same time putting our plans and policies in place so that we can win the next General elections and get on with the work of building a Belize that Works for Everyone.

ROW LED TO A SHINER?

Thursday, May 16, 2019 One day post-Mother’s Day Moses M.L. Barrow a Belize Entrepreneur who often doubles as an Ambassador of Music for Belize visited the Belama Police Station to lodge a complaint on one Bradley Roe. A summary of facts received by the newspaper led to many questions. The summary alleges that Mr. Barrow was socializing alone—an oxymoron only possible in this summary. Next, Mr. Barrow alleges he knew Mr. Roe for some five years. What the summary was extremely broad on was the nature of this knowledge.

If would be difficult to comprehend how a public figure will complain that he received a ‘shiner’ on the left eye yet was not prodded for more information that could be useful when prosecuting the case. It would be in his interest to state more.

All this happened at an establishment on the Philip Goldson Highway deep in the city. Mr. Barrow alleges that he was hit without any cause. He has requested court action into the matter. All bets are on.

THE BELIZE OFFSHORE FINANCIAL GAMES; MAY THE ODDS BE FOREVER IN YOUR FAVOR Contributed Recently, Belize has seen itself in a myriad of IBC/IFS woes. In 2016, the International banking community in Belize faced the withdrawal of correspondent banking leaving their international financial status temporarily in disarray. In June 2018, the license for Choice Bank Limited was revoked by the Prime Minister/Minister of Finance, on the advice of the Central Bank of Belize. In December 2018, the EU Code of conduct group (COCG) had blacklisted the country for failing to meet agreed tax good governance standards.

On the 12th of April 2019, the Prime Minister once again revoked a Class “A” International Banking License, this time being Atlantic International Bank Ltd. These chain of events are no coincidence, in fact it hints to poor governance and oversight from the regulating bodies.

The muddling of political aides and cronies within the regulating bodies and now defunct organizations gives poor credibility to this Government’s good governance and accountability platform. In the case of Choice Bank, Rodwell Williams, Barrow’s long-time law partner is named as a Director of the aforementioned bank.

Mr. Williams also sits on the board of the International Financial Services Commission. Five companies sought legal action to have Choice Bank closed, one of the companies, Orion Corporate & Trust, has former UDP Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emil Arguelles as a partner.

Despite Choice Bank’s claim of being able to secure an insurance policy which would have allowed it to repay its customers, the bank was still closed.

The most recent wind up of Atlantic International Company Limited also presents various political figures amidst the liquidation controversy. An FTC court filing lists Barrow and Williams as one of the law firms representing Sanctuary Bay, the development company accused of conducting a $100 million USD real estate scam. Senator Aldo Salazar is the attorney for Atlantic International Company Limited and is also an attorney for a local bank, The Atlantic Bank Ltd. In previous interviews, Barrow had pointed out his belief of innocence by Atlantic International Bank, however, the subsequent detention and questioning of Senator Salazar would prove otherwise.

Prime Minister Barrow’s insinuation of being liable for the debt created by Sanctuary Bay has no standing under Liquidation rules. In the Sanctuary Bay Case filed with the FTC, it states “the Receiver will turn over the defendants’ assets to the FTC. Then, the FTC will return those assets to consumers who purchased lots in Sanctuary Belize/The Reserve.” This would mean that Sanctuary Bay and assets held

by AIBL on behalf of Sanctuary Bay and subsidiaries would be liable for repayment to debtors. With all the cronies crisscrossing the thin lines between politics, regulatory bodies and the corporate world, the opportunities to create fraud and insider trading increases exponentially. In the US, the penalty for insider trading is 20 years in prison with a fine of up to $25,000,000

million USD, Belize has no laws to govern insider trading of information.

Belizeans must be forever vigilant of the inner workings of these IBC’s/IFS and if you’re ever in doubt, just follow the “red” tape. As a popular creole proverb says “ Sleep wid yu oan aiy”

Dear Editor, Am writing once more since am concerned and it is nagging me. For some time now, I have been very concerned about the Banking Industry in Belize. I have seen our Belizean banks lose their corresponding banking status with US banks and for me this was worrisome. Following this, I saw bank after bank close their doors due to failure while others opted to leave Belize to avoid losing their reputation.

I have worked very hard to earn every penny I have made. I save not only for a rainy day but for my retirement. I was tempted to invest my money in what they call offshore banking but decided to keep my dollars at home.

The recent upheaval that led to Atlantic International having to close its doors has further worried me to the point of serious concern. Atlantic International was the sister bank to Atlantic Bank where I happen to deposit practically my entire life’s savings.

Mr. Editor, I am one of many whose concerns now run deep. Atlantic Bank has been mute when it comes to this situation. As a concerned depositor I need answers. I have spoken to a few people at the bank who are in management and they too seem to be totally lost as to what is happening. The upper management at Atlantic Bank needs to somehow make a statement to calm our concerns as depositors. We have seen big banks in other countries fail and depositors end up with a dime to a dollar and losing the bulk of their deposits.

I implore the top management at Atlantic Bank to speak and do so promptly. They are too mute on something so important. The more I read and research this issue the more concerns and questions rage in my mind.

I can safely say I am very unsettled and am seriously considering withdrawing every penny I have deposited in Atlantic Bank. If the Management of Atlantic does not want a run on the bank my humble advice is that they speak up and clarify or indicate to us as depositors that Atlantic Bank is in no way tied up or affiliated with the mess Atlantic International got itself involved in.

The Governor of the Central Bank and the Prime Minister as Minister of Finance must also clarify this entire situation for everyday Belizean like

POST PLEBISCITE Last Wednesday’s vote was a critical plebiscite, one of the most important, if not the most important, in the history of independent Belize. A plebiscite, according to my favored Concise Oxford English Dictionary, is “the direct vote of all the members of an electorate on an important public question.” Of course the term is associated with the word “plebeian,” which means a commoner, a member of the lower class, an ordinary person, one of the masses of people, as opposed to a “patrician,” an aristocrat or member of the noble class in ancient Rome. The vote was for everyone, and our Belizean people did speak through their X’s, loudly and clearly. Now we must move forward, and we must hold leaders to account in ensuring that the next steps are proper, transparent, and explained pellucidly to all.

The experience of voting day was generally good (except of course for the vote buying by the UDP that was obvious), and it allowed those of us in the political arena to practise for later votes and elections. Naturally there were glitches, and a very sad time for me and my people was having to witness the ire and bemusement of persons who were not able to vote. In Hattieville several persons who had their brand new ID cards were left off the list. In Ladyville we were shaking our heads that two women, who were never informed of their “pending” status, fervently wanted to cast their votes, only to discover that they were not on the voters roll. When they went in to re-register they gave their telephone numbers, and election officers ought to have informed them that they did not make the list. In my view this is unforgivable. As a matter of fact one of the young women went to the election office in Ladyville the evening before the vote to ask for her ID card. I met her outside, but unfortunately the office was already closed. She would have found out then that she wasn’t on the list. It broke my heart to see how sorely disappointed she was on voting day. She was effectively disenfranchised.

I next note the comment of the Commonwealth Observer Team led by Rt. Hon. Hubert Ingraham of the Bahamas that the majority of polling staff were women. Women hold up Belize !!

Make no mistake. Men control most of the power and decision-making, but it is we women

who make things happen and keep things functioning in our country.

Kudos to the election staff, but there should have been a more efficient system for giving out the ID cards. Similarly, ALL of the scrutineers at Ladyville RC School for the poll in Area 30 for our party were women. My thanks to everyone for a job well done, including the guys of course ! I also thank the Police. They were very helpful particularly for elderly voters, and I felt that they were professional.

On our way to the Western Zone of the Hattieville and La Democracia polling stations, it was around 12:30 pm. Love FM news was on, and to my surprise and annoyance interviews with Assad Shoman and the Prime Minister telling people to vote YES were being aired. Am I the only person who noticed this clear violation of proper conduct ? I thought that campaigning and trying to influence the vote on voting day is illegal. I must call out the news editor.

This was just not right.

And I pause as well to commend the comments of colleague Senior Counsel Magali Marin Young, which she posted after the referendum lest we forget. She has quite rightly pointed out that we should not simply forget the flouting of the rule of law and the dictatorial behavior of the Prime Minister. We must also not forget the abject failure of the PM and his foreign minister to have the education campaign and the entire process properly conducted, as well as the failure to take the Special Agreement to the National Assembly for their imprimatur.

There were in addition a number of irregularities which she has pointed out. Naturally the point that I have taken most poignantly in all the process prior to the poll, and I have said it repeatedly, is that the election and boundaries department and vital statistics office did not do their work correctly.

There are still far too many errors.

Hundreds of Belizeans have been disenfranchised, and Magali is so right to call out those responsible, the PM being chief among them.

Anyway, as noted, our people in their majority have decided. We respect this, and post plebiscite we must insist that going forward every effort is made to unite and continue to educate our people and as well to keep the Opposition engaged and on board for the good of all Belizeans.

By Gilroy Usher, Sr. Thursday, May 16, 2019 “Without strong watchdog institutions, impunity becomes the very foundation upon which systems of corruption are built. And if impunity is not demolished, all efforts to bring an end to corruption are in vain.” — Rigoberta Menchú, Nobel Prize Laureate.

In one of the worst accommodations agreements in the history of Belize, in 2015, P.M. Barrow agreed to pay Ashcroft $600 million for his former company, B.T.L. which was worth less than $100 million when the UDP administration expropriated it in 2009. Four years later, in an interview on Monday May 6th, 2019 the P.M. sheepishly and indirectly stated that Belize will have to pay compensation the victims of a huge scam that took place under the watch of his administration.

That is an accommodation agreement that should be debated in parliament. This new accommodation agreement should not be secretly agreed on by the P.M. as he did to eventually compensation Ashcroft for B.T.L. The multi-million scam took place because of the corruption and incompetence of the government in monitoring the activities of Atlantic International Bank Ltd (AIBL)and ‘so called investors” known as Sanctuary Belize to ensure that they were giving their customers value for money locally. The luxury paradise was never built, because the entire develop-

ment was a fake.

It is important to note that at the time of the scam one of the attorneys for AIBL was the same well-connected UDP attorney, who chaired the inquiry into the huge immigration scandal that occurred under this government.

Although that inquiry concluded over a year ago, not a word has been heard about its findings.

The PM states that they would compensate the victims of the largest scam under its watch, because most of the investors are American citizens. The sad reality is that this UDP administration will have absolutely nothing to show for the $100 million prices in this development scam.

The administration will readily find the cold cash for this latest accommodation agreement, while it tells Belizeans it has no funds to reduce the ridiculously high of gasoline, which is far cheaper in all the countries in the region. The administration will also readily find the cash to pay mega bucks to foreigners in compensation for the scam, as it tells the Belizean people it has no funds to address their need for land, proper housing, and greater access to education, better healthcare. There is nothing to combat the real fight against the endless street murders that have claimed the lives of at least five more young black men in Belize City in the last two weeks. The cost of corruption and incompetence is real. They have to go.

Teaching from the Heart

By José Jiménez Thursday, May 16, 2019 It might be a coincidence that Education Week is just after Mother’s Day but who knows. Without a doubt, all of us learn from our mothers and mother figures with the utmost of joy and respect. These superheroes give of their lives to make sure that we have our own life. They do not expect anything is return. Sons and daughters wish their mothers a Happy Mother’s Day due to the fact that mothers nurture and educate from the heart. It is up to each one of us to absorb the best of what they offer and use their life lessons in our own decisions and workings. Our Mothers do truly teach from the heart.

Teachers come from all corners of life, male and female, and each with their own inspiration and outlook— not to call it objectives and activities.

Their humanity tags along with them into the classrooms even as they pass on their knowledge to the children of Belize. A few parents expect only knowledge to be passed on to their sons and daughters. Many of today’s teachers are mothers and fathers and they definitely teach with their heart.

Worldwide, modern pedagogy has been transformed by the reality of the access to information technology and the availability of the Internet at even at our Belizean fingertips. It is not surprising today that even an Ipod is an antiquity and the word Ipad is phasing out. What happens if you go to SCUBA without the association having certified you? Or What can happen when one attempts to saw some lumber recklessly without having been shown the details? (think of your own example) Such is the problem with the Internet, teens today are roughshod over it and many misguidedly feel that the teacher is superfluous. A few parents might feel so too, very mistakenly. That few is enough to change the course of a society.

This doesn’t get the education system off the hook. Do not blame all the goodness of technology for the wrongs. In fact, the education system needs a paradigm shift to teaching to the students using the tools that they know. This shift includes political leaders, policy makers, policy, schools, their administrations and teachers. The system ultimately also includes the parents and the students themselves. Some changes are nice, slowly but surely, but in Belize there might be need for an accelerated vision. Government lately accelerates laws and referendums at will so there is precedent. The education system could take a much needed shift. And yes, it needs money. Everyone is hitting the funds destined for the Caracol Road; let us leave that topic out of this essay.

The Caribbean Examination Council has its own threat to bear from the already changed norms of the digital natives. Up to last check, the CXC exams wish to show that they are technologically up-to-scratch by checking many parts of the exams, online. This is only convenient for the organiza-

If all are licensed, then that means that they are MORE qualified and thus demand higher salaries and much greater respect.

Instead, generally pay scales are the same and the work load is a lot more.

The level of respect from government especially seem to be less and less for these more qualified teachers—unfair.
