BTL OWES GST $29 MILLION Thursday, June 27, 2019 The Belize Times has been reliably informed that political cronies/officials in BTL, in the GST Department and in the Ministry of Finance, at the highest levels, are scurrying for cover and frantically trying to deny all allegations and dodge all questions after the shocking revelation that BTL allegedly owes over $29 MILLION in General Sales Tax, unpaid since 2012.

According to official documents leaked to this newspaper, in 2012 the Barrow-operated entity, chock full of UDP cronies including the son of the Prime Minister and his CEO, Audrey Wallace in leadership positions, reported sales of just over $25M. So it should have

Continued from page 1 paid GST of around $3.1M, but according to sources within the department, it didn’t. In 2013, BTL reported sales of over $28M, but allegedly did not pay in GST of over $3.5M. In 2014, BTL again reported sales of over $28M, but nothing paid to GST. In 2015, sales of over $36M, but reportedly no payment to GST of over $4.5M due. In 2016, $28M in sales, but $3.5M reportedly not paid to GST. And in 2017, BTL reported sales of over $49M, but allegedly did not pay in $6.1M due to GST. How could this company, which the Prime Minister has boasted of to no end, and which he forced taxpayers to pay nearly $600M for after a closed door agreement with Lord Ashcroft, owe almost $30MILLION in GST? That’s a question everybody is asking but nobody is answering. The PM’s legal advisor and head honcho on the Board, Net Vasquez, isn’t taking calls. And sources say that Financial Secretary Joseph Waight has developed a sudden and startling case of amnesia.

The Belize Times has gone further than the $29M, and has calculated what BTL’s debt to the GST Department is, including late fees and penalties and interest – just like any normal Belizean owing GST would have to find if they miss a deadline for payment. Incredibly, all things equal, BTL owes the GST Department $21M in interest and penalties for non-payment, for a grand total of over $50MILLION. That is an absolute disgrace, and all blame must fall squarely in the lap of Prime Minister Dean Barrow, who is not only the Minister of Finance, in charge of the GST Department, but also should be responsible for Belize’s stakes in BTL, which has become known as Barrow Telemedia Limited. BTL, or at least the UDP cronies who command HUGE salaries at BTL. These have benefitted from the incestuous relationships with the Barrow administration, enjoying write-offs and bailouts to time, including infusions of cash from a Barrow-friendly Taiwan government, a UDP controlled SSB and a very UDP-friendly Atlantic Bank.

The GST Department has been known to completely humiliate small business-owners who have fallen behind in payment, even behind by hundreds and thousands of dollars. So for BTL to be given a free pass where GST is concerned may be criminal.

In normal countries with normal people, the Minister of Finance would be forced to resign, and the entire UDP-infiltrated BTL dolly-house would crumble.

The people of Belize must demand an accounting from Prime Minister Dean Barrow and the principals of BTL. That money owed to the GST is taxpayers’ money which could have been used to better the lives of Belizeans. While so many basic services are falling apart, and Belizeans can’t access quality healthcare services, BTL is allowed to owe tens of millions of dollars. While so many children are dropping out of school because they cannot afford to continue, BTL is allowed to owe tens of millions of dollars. Imagine what that $29M in unpaid taxes could have done for the people of Belize. Imagine the possibilities.

The UDP continues to rape this country. Only a very few – Ministers and their family members and their cronies and select friends continue to prosper, laughing all the way to the bank, while normal Belizeans are becoming poorer and poorer. IS THE SSB IN BREACH OF THE LAW? The Social Security Board (SSB) is an organization that should provide a well-defined social insurance scheme, a safety net, for the Belizean worker and this is financed by contributions from employees and their employers. Over the years the contributions have been in excess of benefits payments as is to be expected from a young scheme. This has led to the creation of a large investment portfolio and made the SSB into what can be considered a major development bank, and the single largest institutional investor in Belize.

The SSB is not only a major social insurance scheme but also a major investor in its own right and a source of funding for major industries in Belize.

However, in recent years this has changed and today we are at the point where contributions can no longer cover the operations/expenditures and the investment income has to be used to do so. As the Actuary had advised in consecutive actuarial reviews the SSB fund is past the Point of Equilibrium (POE) hence the SSB is now making the changes that should have been done since 2008. Both the rate of contributions and the insurable earnings are being increased effective July 1, 2019.

In summary the SSB is a major development bank and institutional investor; its operations must reflect this in every respect. This portfolio comprises of investments in key areas of Belize’s economy such as Agriculture, Tourism, Utilities, Education, etc. A key segment of the portfolio is also comprised of mortgages. The success of any investment institution depends heavily on the culture of the organization and the attention given to the risk profile of the portfolio. The culture must by necessity involve the entire organization but special responsibility rests with the Board of Directors and in the case of the SSB also with its Investment Committee (IC). These two bodies must set the tone and develop the investment culture of the organization.

As at end of the year 2017 the total investment portfolio of the SSB stood at $454.5 million and the Reserves stood at some $522.5 million. Some years ago, because of the nature of the organization, special interest was placed in the diversification of the investments bearing in mind the risk on the investment portfolio. So much was the concern that it was set in law, Chapter 44 of the Laws of Belize – Third Schedule Section 22 “Investment Framework” that no single investment shall exceed 20% of the total amount of the Reserves, including economically targeted investments.

As per the 2017 audited financials the SSB’s investment in Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) is approximately $110M in shares and another $6m in debentures. This then would account for almost 22.2% of the actuarial reserves.

If this has not changed then the SSB was breaking the law in 2017 and continues to do so now in 2019. The concern should be even more acute now that it is rumored that the BEL is declaring a loss for 2018 and will not be paying dividends. Can the SSB afford not to get a return on its investment of over 20% of its reserves and investment portfolio?

The Actuary has consistently advised the SSB the need

to halt the investments in equity investments especially in the Utilities Sector and to increase investment in development sectors. The 2017 Actuarial Review recommends that fresh assets should be re-directed in its entirety to Development Issues, particularly the Agricultural Sector, from 9.2% of the portfolio to 13% in 2020 and by 23% in 2025. Hopefully the SSB heeds this advice and stop investing in GOB projects that need bailing out and substandard infrastructure projects done for political gain only.

GIVING THE RED DEVIL HIS DUE

C

ertainly, we can all agree that the Red Devil is blessed with the gift of gab.

The simple truth is that his uncanny ability to twist and spin complete fiction into pseudo facts, to his advantage, has been a cornerstone in his political career. It has always been about “the optics” with this one. It has rarely ever been about the greater good, the truth and certainly never been about “Normal Belizeans.”

At the last sitting of the House of Representatives we were treated to yet another “pappy” show as the Red Devil again made a spectacle of himself and a mockery of the importance of government business. It is already shameful that the only response to the recent tragic events involving two mental health patients was that the Ministry of Health (MOH), UNICEF and other advocates for mental health awareness haphazardly met on June 11th in order to sloppily plan a survey to be carried out in… 2020. This survey will then be used, at a further date, to help Belizeans understand and address mental health illness. To add insult to injury, a plethora of medical terms and diagnoses were tossed around.

Dr. Campos is the only medical practitioner at the House of Representatives (HOR) and, while he is no longer at the MOH, would have been the only one even remotely qualified to give his professional opinion. The predicament lies not in the use of the words but in the context in which they were hurled across the floor at Hon. Julius Espat. The words “bi-polar, schizophrenic” and “sick puppy” were spoken to inflict offence and abuse. They were spoken as slurs, to disparage, malign and defame. It was in this same spirit that the word “peasant” was used to describe Hon Julius Espat. A peasant can by definition describe a subsistence farmer who rents or owns a small piece of land for the purpose of cultivation. However, that was not the connotation intended, rather the Red Devil cast it as an aspersion, a barb to humiliate and put-down someone whom he considers beneath him socially, intellectually and financially.

The intention with which those words were used do nothing to advance mental health awareness in our country. The fact that they were used in an utterly derogatory and demeaning context by the Prime Minister of this country sets us back and is telling of the stigma still associated with mental health disorders in this country. Instead of moving Belizeans forward by establishing treatment centers for some of our most vulnerable, the PM chooses instead to shame and victimize Belizeans who are ill and reinforces the idea that it is acceptable.

The bitter truth is that the PM and his family belong to an elite class. It is difficult for them to imagine what it must be like for the working-class Belizean who cannot afford Rolex Watches, Armani Suits, Hermes Birkin and Louis Vuitton bags and is in fact struggling to make ends meet. They can never imagine the living conditions of tens of thousands of Belizeans who live in extreme poverty. Those Belizean brothers and sisters who cannot even feed their families or have basic services like potable water and electricity. You will find no empathy there for the sick and suffering in this country. You will receive only utter disdain, scorn, contempt and insults.

We are in the season of Village Council Elections and so we invite all us “Peasants” to please give the Red Devil his due…Vote Blue!

DÁNDOLE AL DIABLO ROJO LO QUE MERECE

iertamente, todos podemos estar de acuerdo en que el Diablo Rojo es bendecido con el don de tener mucha labia. La simple verdad es que su extraordinaria capacidad para torcer y convertir la ficción completa en pseudo-hechos, para su ventaja, ha sido una piedra angular en su carrera política. Siempre ha sido todo sobre “la óptica” con este fulano. Rara vez ha sido sobre el bien mayor, la verdad y ciertamente nunca ha sido acerca de los “beliceños normales”.

En la última sesión de la Cámara de Representantes nos deleitaron con otra exhibición fatua cuando el Diablo Rojo volvió a hacer un espectáculo de sí mismo y una burla de la importancia de los negocios del gobierno. Ya es vergonzoso que la única respuesta a los trágicos acontecimientos recientes que involucraron a dos pacientes de salud mental fue que el Ministerio de Salud (MOH, en inglés), UNICEF y otros promotores de la concienciación sobre la salud mental se reunieron de manera casual el 11 de junio con el fin de planificar a la ligera una encuesta se llevará a cabo en... 2020. Esta encuesta se utilizará, en una fecha posterior, para ayudar a los beliceños a entender y abordar las enfermedades de salud mental. Para añadir sal a la herida, se lanzaron a diestra y siniestra una gran cantidad de términos y diagnósticos médicos.

El Dr. Campos es el único médico en la Cámara de Representantes (HOR, en inglés) y, aunque ya no está en el MOH, habría sido el único, incluso remotamente, calificado para dar su opinión profesional. La situación no radica en el uso de las palabras, sino en el contexto en el que fueron arrojadas al otro lado de la cámara en el Honorable Julius Espat. Se dijeron las palabras “bipolar, esquizofrénico” y “perrito enfermo” para infligir ofensa y abuso. Fueron dichas como insultos, para menospreciar, difamar y denigrar. Fue con este mismo espíritu que la palabra inglesa “peasant” (campesino) se utilizó para describir al Hon. Julius Espat. Un “peasant” (campesino) puede, por definición, describir a un agricultor de subsistencia que alquila o posee un pequeño pedazo de tierra con el propósito de cultivar. Sin embargo, esa no era la connotación prevista, sino que el Diablo Rojo la lanzó como una aspersión, una pulla mordaz para humillar y degradar a alguien a quien él considera debajo de él social, intelectual y financieramente.

La intención con la que se utilizaron esas palabras no hace nada para promover la concienciación sobre la salud mental en nuestro país. El hecho de que hayan sido utilizados en un contexto totalmente despectivo y degradante por el Primer Ministro de este país nos hace retroceder y nos está diciendo del estigma todavía asociado con los trastornos de salud mental en este país.

En lugar de hacer avanzar a los beliceños estableciendo centros de tratamiento para aquellos de los nuestros más vulnerables, el Primer Ministro elige en su lugar avergonzar y victimizar a los beliceños que están enfermos y refuerza la idea del que eso es aceptable.

La triste realidad es que el Primer Ministro y su familia pertenecen a una clase de élite. Es difícil para ellos, imaginar cómo debe ser la vida diaria para la clase trabajadora beliceña que no puede permitirse relojes Rolex, trajes Armani, bolsos Hermes Birkin y Louis Vuitton y, de hecho, está luchando para llegar a fin de mes. Nunca podrán imaginar las condiciones de vida de decenas de miles de beliceños que viven en extrema pobreza. Como aquellos hermanos y hermanas beliceños que ni siquiera pueden alimentar a sus familias o tener servicios básicos como agua potable y electricidad. No encontrarás empatía allí por los enfermos y el sufrimiento en este país. Recibirás sólo desdén total, desprecio, escarnio e insultos.

Estamos en la temporada de las elecciones de Consejos Aldeanos y por eso invitamos a todos nosotros los “Campesinos” para que por favor le demos al Diablo Rojo su merecido... ¡Vote Azul!

QUESTIONS TO THE MINISTERS 1. Will the Minister of Finance please say it ain’t so -- please Prime Minister, tell us that you were not planning to allow BTL to get away with not paying GST in the amount of $30 million dollars? Also will the Prime Minister also say if he was aware that under his son’s leadership of BTL that they were underreporting earnings?

2. Will the Minister of Health please say if the rumors that his CEO Dr. Ramon Figueroa has been booted out for UDP crony Dr. George Gough, the brother of Sandra Bedran of Atlantic Bank fame?

3. Will the Minister of National Emergency please inform the residents of Belmopan City of the condition of the fire trucks in Belmopan and will he also say, considering the fact that he is currently driving around in a brand new range rover, how much money was allocated for fire trucks for this Nation’s Capital?

4. What will it take for the Prime Minister to take action? Now we have patients at the Belmopan Hospital having to leave their sick bed because there is no electricity and no backup generator. Will the Prime Minister please fire Pablo Marin!

In just a score and four days, Belize is stunned with multiple single homicides, a double homicide, a triple homicide and a ghastly quintuple homicide. Just after the latter and most horrific of murders in a marine area where lobsters are supposed to be the sole victims and where Manatees are legally protected, the supposed Minister of our Security jettisons to halfway around the world to window shop and take pictures in Airport cafés. Thereafter, Saldivar’s Ministry sends out a release telling people to be careful of wet drops.

Saldivar’s crime alleviation strategy seems to be ask the law-abiders to stay away from the Sarstoon, don’t vend just stay home, don’t go into the protected waters(that’s for Manatees and the bad guys)…what’s next, no more fly fishing. This lame duck administration is really not giving a hoot.

Just as the House of Representatives were meeting on June 21, our news media pages blazed with the story that five fishermen that left home on the Friday before the opening of the Lobster season June 15 were being found one by one. The first to be found with a shot to his head was Travis Cook (23) by Swallow Caye Wildlife Sanctuary on June 20. Next, the body of Ernest Wills (40) was sighted floating by the Yarborough Area shore on June 21. An hour or so later another, Winston Santos (40) was found some three miles out. The search would be more difficult at night. Early Saturday morning, a couple more bodies, Jamar Martinez (21) and Allyson Jones(19) were found tied up by Mapp’s Caye. All were already in a state of decomposition and taken subsequently to the Belize Medical College at the entrance of the Burrell Boom Road for their regulation autopsies.

They were laid to rest at the Eternal Garden Cemetery.

The men, all shot dead, were of various address in Belize City. The frustration Belizeans have to live with is the unknown reason(s) our men and women are being killed in execution style. Robbery seems to be an incidental event whilst murders go unsolved. Narco-trafficking, wetdrops or plane sightings, are always in rumourville as possible motives. Will these murders go unsolved also?

Sadly, this Quintuple homicide was followed on June 23 by a Virginia doctor and a San Pedro tour guide who were gunned down in plain sight. Police seem to have eye witnesses given the detail that they allow. Of course, these need to be protected. Rewards are being offered for information on these two sets of murders.

David Ophir Martinez from the San Andres, Corozal got his visit from San Pedro village cut short as he was shot on Saturday June 22.

Single mother Yolanda Elvira Requena(47) was stabbed to death on the Village Council Election aftermath hours in

Bullet Tree Falls Village, Cayo District.

She was killed allegedly at the hands of Thelma Warrior for reasons that might be related to a love triangle but all that does nothing to relieve the pain from her loved ones.

As if we have not had enough, on June 26, Derrick Tracey of Sittee Street, Belize City, was shot and died as he was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. The gunman immediately fled the crime scene.

Site area a robbery became a murder scene as Carlton Wade was shot.

Eleven killings in twelve days.

It is about time Belize spends to defend its citizens. Every person that is killed depletes the resources of our nation. All of us pay taxes, directly or indirectly, which are used in the development of our nation’s resources. We all contribute to the education, health, protection, utilities and other ameni-

ties, as meagre as some may seem.

Our lives NEED to be protected with successful investigation and Crime Scene expertise. There is no better deterrent in lieu of better economic opportunities.

Each Belizean life is precious and NO ONE should go free when they decide they will take one, or two or five.

Something must be done. Sadly, it the same UDP government for 11 plus years now.

Go straight to jail When normal, regular Belizeans owe General Sales Tax, even in the thousands, they are taken to Court, embarrassed and are forced to pay.

The news that Barrow Telemedia Limited, otherwise known as BTL, owes over $29M in GST is an outrage. Bad back lame duck Barrow should resign in shame. He should be forced to step down. Everybody knows that the only reason BTL was allowed to get away with not paying GST is because the Prime Minister’s son was CEO, and he and the Prime Minister’s cronies like Net Vasquez still run the show. Make no mistake about it. This one will not go away. This is another nail in a UDP coffin which is already shut tight. The Belizean people should not stand for this. If you owe light bill to the Government owned BEL, you are cut out. If you owe water bill to the Government owed BWS, you are cut out. But because BTL is run by not-normal people, they are allowed to owe the people of Belize $29M. This will end badly for the Prime Minister and for the UDP. You can take that to the bank.

Imagine the possibilities The Prime Minister will spin and spin this one till his head hurts. But just imagine the possibilities. Over the weekend the Southern Regional Hospital was out of electricity because the backup generator isn’t working.

Remember this is the hospital where the morgue wasn’t working for almost two months. What could $29M have done at the Southern Regional?

Imagine the parts of the country where there are no working ambulances.

Imagine all the schools that are falling apart. Imagine all the roads in poor rural communities which need work. Think about the poverty. Think about people living in swamps. Think about $29M. And then realize that the son of the Prime Minister became a millionaire off BTL. The CEO and cronies are making hundreds of thousands a year. They are all getting rich, while the poor get poorer. The Prime Minister did say BTL is for the people of Belize, right? What a sick joke.

Bun Fyah On Wednesday night there was a fire in Belmopan. The one fire truck which responded ran out of water in about five minutes, leaving the fire to blaze out of control, threatening everything in the vicinity. Imagine, that in 2019, in the midst of a bustling city, next to a commercial plaza which houses banks and utility companies and stores, and next to a government building, residents of the area had to break a pipe and fill buckets to try to hold down the flames. Only in Belize, where Ministers are so intent on filling their own pockets that the masses are left to survive anyway they can.

If you ask Minister of Hustling Castro about the fire, he’ll mumble some crap about how they are looking into new fire engines. Same old story for years. The truth is that this crowd knows they are on the way out. All the writing is on the wall.

Murders Here’s an update for you. The Minister of National Insecurity, the fat fellow from Belmopan is touring Taiwan and no doubt telling all kinds of lies in between 10 course meals and photo opportunities. Meanwhile, in Belize, there are been 12 murders in 11 days. In one incident, five men were brutally executed and dumped in the sea. In another, a tour guide and a tourist were killed. Just Wednesday night, a hardworking, elderly shopkeeper in Hattieville was robbed and killed when he tried to defend his property. Blood is running in the streets, and on the seas, while the Minister of National Insecurity fills his fat belly on treats from Taiwan. He doesn’t care. None of the UDP do. When the Prime Minister stood up in the House just Friday to talk a bunch of nonsense, did you hear him say anything at all about crime? That’s right. He didn’t.

Sanctuary Bay On behalf of the Hon. Kareem, we would like to issue an apology to the Prime Minister. We are told that following the House meeting doctors had to be called in to regulate his blood pressure. We haven’t been able to confirm, but we are told from reliable sources that the poor fellow just kept muttering Sanctuary Bay under his breath every few seconds and started hallucinating about being in a small room with metal bars. Don’t ask us.

It’s what we were told. At one point in the House we thought the poor PM was going to collapse, the way his eyes rolled back in his head when Hon. Kareem kept pointing out the involvement of Barrow and Williams in the Sanctuary Bay scam. We’re glad you’re okay, Dean Oliver, because we want you alive and kicking for the next instalments in this saga. You and the UDP will go down over this one. And maybe that room with metal bars won’t just be a hallucination after all.

This week’s snippet into Sanctuary Bay Saga is a fact-checker stemming from the remarks Prime Minister Dean O. Barrow made in response to the Hon. Kareem Musa informing the people during the House of Representatives forum. The Prime Minister furtively took the opportunity to inform the people that there is already an agreement made in Miami(same as the half-Billion BTL secret agreement city venue). PM said we will soon see an end to the “AIBL Saga.” There must be an excellent reason why he didn’t present details in the hallowed chambers of the National Assembly. Maybe Wells didn’t give him permission or maybe he needs to respect a foreign court more than the Belizean people. Maybe that is Reserved for after July 9th.

But while we wait, let us unravel on what he vented: Just at the onset of summer, June 21, 2019, the Prime Minister of Belize shamelessly misled the Belizean people during his intermittent tirades disguised as rebuttals. Specifically this was an obvious defence of his law firm, Barrow and Williams L.L.P. He is as Trumpian as one can get when he, TRIPLE SHAMELESSLY(Triple since he is a “three time Prime Minister”), gloated that his law partner won a case while defending the notorious Sanctuary Bay Enterprises in 2016. Imagine: In Belize you can be a scammer and STILL you cannot be blasted on Facebook. In 2016, Andris Pukke had already been jailed due to an Ameridebt case.

FTC Press Release November 2018: In 2010, Pukke pleaded guilty to obstructing justice after he admitted obstructing the AmeriDebt receivership the order put in place and refusing to turn over the required assets. As a result, the court sentenced him to 18 months in prison. Between 2008 and 2014, the FTC returned nearly $7 million to consumers deceived through the AmeriDebt scheme. Pukke and Baker never relinquished control of the land parcel, however, and allegedly continued marketing it as part of the Sanctuary Belize scheme in the same way they had since 2005, even while Pukke was in jail.

INTRODUCTION (Excerpt) Convicted felon and serial contemnor Andris Pukke has operated a massive real estate scam over the past decade. Through a maze of interconnected companies and a cadre of henchmen already known to this Court (collectively, the Sanctuary Belize Enterprise (“SBE”)), Pukke has duped retirees and small businesspeople into spending more than $100 million on empty lots in a Manhattan-sized plot in remote southern Belize (“Sanctuary Belize”) that the Court previously ordered Pukke to turn over to the Receiver to repay his victims in FTC v. AmeriDebt (D. Md.). Unbeknownst to the Court, the AmeriDebt Receiver, and the FTC, Pukke and co-conspirator Peter Baker surreptitiously maintained control of the Parcel. In the current scam, the lots’ supposed value derives from their presence in a resort community that Pukke and SBE claim they will develop, but Pukke is no more likely to build a small city in Belize than he was to honestly manage consumers’ financial obligations in AmeriDebt.

In July 2006, Pukke misrepresented to the Court that Dolphin “collapsed” and “went out of business.”

DE493 (July 28, 2006) at 3. Second, Pukke transferred Dolphin’s development rights and a portion of the Parcel to two new Nevis entities, Starfish Development Ltd. (“Starfish”),7 and Sanctuary Bay Ltd. (“Sanctuary Bay”). PXQQ ¶¶ 81:86, 82:87, 83:88, 84:89, 85:90. Specifically, Baker worked with Usher and Belizean law firm Barrow & Williams8 (“B&W”) to form Starfish to take over for Dolphin, with Baker owning 99% of each Nevis entity. PXQQ ¶ 81:86. In short, to help keep the Parcel from the FTC and the Receiver, Pukke transferred his interests to Baker.9 Footnotes 8 Belizean attorney Rodwell Williams apparently performed the work. PXQQ ¶¶ 81:86, 83:88. His partner, Dean Barrow, became Prime Minister of Belize in early 2008 and remains Prime Minister. PXQQ ¶¶ 90:95, 91:96, 92:97.

9 Baker battled the Receiver’s efforts to locate evidence relevant to his role helping Pukke secure the Parcel. He unsuccessfully sought to block his deposition, see FTC v. AmeriDebt, No. 8:2005-cv-1133 (C.D. Cal. Dec. 5, 2005), and unsuccessfully moved to quash a subpoena seeking emails he sent from PeterBelize@gmail.com, see FTC v. AmeriDebt, No. 3:05-mc- 80253 (N.D. Cal. Oct. 6, 2006).

All that is complex but simple at the same time. Who is guilty of what is another sensational issue. This here goes to show that when Barrow and Williams defended Sanctuary Bay Enterprises in 2016 that is wasn’t the first time they have done work for them. It is up to the Belizean people to take PM’s words into context. At the house he said that all of this is in the normal course of work.

That might be the greatest of issues here. It is all normal that scam artists are involved with our three time Prime Minister’s law firm even before 2008. This was during the time when he was hollering for civil disobedience and summoned Belizean imaginations into a sanctuary that ONLY the UDP could bestow.

So it wasn’t just a libel suit. PM also added that the most recent FTC suit in which the Atlantic Bank International is named as a defendant is JUST a Civil suit. Does that make it less problematic PM? By the way, a full three terms means 15 years, 5 time 3, at the helm. So PM Barrow will go into history as serving two incomplete terms and torturing the people with a third lame duck term during which it was a mad rush to get his leadership seat. What a triple shame.

Next Week Sanctuary Bay Saga: Atlantic International Bank, the appellant in this case, played a key role in assisting the Sanctuary Belize scam App. 301. The bank did capture them. It opened accounts for more than 100 consumers who are looking to discuss Management Plans in our Belize.

KING DEAN – MALIGNANT NARCISSISM

By Hilly Bennett On Friday June 21, 2019, the House of Representatives convened a regular session to consider several financial and non-financial bills at the National Assembly in Belmopan. The bills were tabled, debated and voted on.

On the adjournment, there was a fiery exchange between the Prime Minister of Belize, the Right Honourable Dean Oliver Barrow and the Honourable Julius Espat, the member for Cayo South constituency.

In his presentation, Espat identified areas of concern regarding the increase in Social Security contributions.

The PM responded in un-statesmanlike fashion.

Barrow attempts to denigrate Julius Espat saying, “….. you are nothing but a peasant.” Having realized the political sin he committed, the Prime Minister attempted to walk back his statement uttering, “there is nothing wrong with the word ‘peasant’.”

Words like a spent arrow cannot be retrieved. Filled with venom, the leader of the haven of democracy intended to eviscerate, skewer and destroy the peasant who was defending the rights of the common people.

The Prime Minister’s caustic, disparaging retort has aroused the ire of the “peasant” class which is the agricultural worker that tend the soil, the ordinary citizens of Belize. Citizens have registered their disgust on various medium regarding the PM use the word. The feelings are that Barrow used the word derogatively and in a demeaning manner.

During the Middle-Ages, under feudalism and in the pre-industrial society, a peasant was considered a member of the traditional class of farmers consisting of labourers or owners of small farms. Often times the word “peasant” has been used pejoratively in reference to the poorer class, the landless farmers and even the agricultural workers in the underdeveloped countries across the globe. The use of the word “peasant” in this context

implies that the individual is uneducated, ignorant and unfamiliar with the more sophisticated mannerism of urban population. Quite likely, the same rationale is used of the colloquial term “bushy”.

In the non-pejorative sense, it is used to identify the rural population of the country. Clearly, not what King Dean intended.

In a Trumpian twist, Dean Barrow’s reaction in the hallowed halls of the National Assembly mimics the diagnosis Lance Dodes, a retired assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, revealed about Trump. He said, “Trump is going to face a challenge from people who are not going to bend to his will. If you have a President who takes it as a personal attack on him, which he does, and flies into a paranoid rage that’s how you start a war.”

He diagnosed Trump “as fitting the description of someone with malignant narcissism, which is characterized by grandiosity, a need for admiration……” Evan Osnos Endgames, ‘The New Yorker’.

This was seen in the reaction of the PM when Julius made a challenge to the hikes in SSB rates.

The history of Dean Barrow’s leadership, as Osnos proffered on besieged presidencies, will be a history of Hubris, of blindness to one’s fault, or deafness to the warnings of seclusion from uncomfortable realities.

Belize is under siege. Crime has spiralled out of control, the country’s healthcare system is in disarray, the economy inches toward the financial cliff. Unfortunately, the PM continues to sit on the high stool of government in total disregard to the harsh realities facing our haven of democracy, while clicking the heels of his Bruno Magli loafers.

Mr. Barrow it is not the peasant who should be taking medications.

Something is wrong with you and it is called MALIGNANT NARCISSISM. “A me King Dean.”

They went to the law firm of Barrow and Williams and who did they go to get the legal assistance in order to acquire the same real-estate that would then be used as the engine of this fraud? Yes, they used the law firm of Barrow and Williams. When these fraudsters, these Sanctuary Bay fraudsters were faced with lawsuits, who do these scam artists engage to defend them against the claims of victims of their fraud? Once again Barrow and Williams. So more and more legal fees for Barrow and Williams. (see article in this newspaper Toledo East, Mike Espat – This is a National University investment and it will now be used as a hotel. This is one of the things that is hurting this country. We cry for a lot of things and when we get it they become big white elephants. It is important that this university should have linked up with some other foreign University that has the interest in educating their students in Marine Science, instead of putting it in the hands of private individuals.

Toledo West, Oscar Requena – In rural areas drivers Licenses have increased from $30 to $60. That is 100% increase. Gun Licenses have seen a whopping 200% increase. If you have to find all these monies to pay for these increases, it is obviously going to put a strain, it is going to make it difficult for our Belizean people.

Corozal South East, Florencio Marin, Jr. - What is happening to our country with all these murders that are occurring? It is now becoming normal. We read it as if we are reading a comic book and all the spectacular things that would happen in a comic book. It seems that killing is a part of the currency.

Cayo North East, Orlando Habet – The supply of water for the twin towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena comes from a well that is near the river itself and during the dry season the water table has gone down and there is a shortage of water. Also people are concerned because sometime the water does not smell very well. In terms of quality, there are no filtering system and I believe the government needs to look at it, because it is apparent the town council cannot deal with this major problem.///

OUT BELAMA RESERVE IN REAL DANGER

Dear Editor,

Please allow me space to express my concerns.

I’ve been writing for weeks now about the situation in Belama 4, with a view to get some kind of attention or to spread awareness to the relevant government departments or NGO in authority in regards to this matter.

Our patrimony is constantly being destroyed by non-Belizeans/ immigrants who seem to have no respect for our authorities. I’ve made many reports to the Belama Police on the threats happening to the Belama Reserve, when they are cutting down our trees, building their homes, dumping garbage or even burning in the Reserve.

The police would indeed come, but they don’t do anything. They allow the incursions to happen.

I even went to the Lands Department in Belize City, with picture evidence to show that the Reserve is being trampled on by the immigrants, to show the officers there. And still nothing is done. They say that it is a matter for the UDP Caretaker Orson Elrington to take action, and they can’t do anything about it.

I went further and call the Department of the Environment and the Forestry Department to explain to them the importance of the trees on the river bank and the so many species of birds in the area. All they say is that they will lodge my concern. But still nothing is being done.

These agencies and peoples are supposed to be the guardians of our patrimony. If they won’t do anything about it, then who will?

It seems that I may have to take matters into my own hands, for the future of the Reserve.

Stand up Belizeans. Let’s us fight for our patrimony for our future generation to come. Let us protect this land that is ours.

BARROW STEAL BRICEÑO IDEAS

Contributed The Prime Minister of Belize, Dean Barrow has stolen Johnny Briceño’s idea for South Side Development plan. This idea put forward by Johnny has been in the news and published in the Belize Times and other newspapers from last year.

Johnny put forward the idea in response to the social problems and ongoing crime situation on the South side of Belize City.

Guess what? Dean Barrow announced he is planning a “special development area” by Chetumal Street Bridge. For eleven years Mr. Barrow and none of his Ministers have ever put forward any ideas to better the lives and improve living conditions for Belizeans on the Southside of Belize City.

All of a sudden B.I.L. has been authorized to do a development area on Southside. Dean Barrow special development area howev-

er is not in the heart of Southside. It is not for one thousand unemployed persons to start working or be involved in working skills. It is a typical Dean Barrow scheme. It is to spend millions on building two or three buildings and then leasing these out to “partners”.

The whole project sounds like a money making scheme for cronies.

Special contractors will get the construction contracts and a handful of workers will be hired and the cost will be in the millions.

B.I.L. is the Belize Infrastructure Limited. This is a private company created by Barrow to handle the millions of dollars received from Venezuela under the Petro Caribe programme. B.I.L. is used to side-step the legal, accounting and financial laws governing the public service which requires the Auditor General to investigate the use of monies and reports to the National assembly in public writing reports.

Over four hundred million dollars of Petro Caribe has gone missing with-

out any details or audited reports that these monies were properly spent on streets, roads, bridges and other infrastructure. It is the largest single misuse of public funds to take place in Belize. There has been no public accountability.

Now, Dean Barrow is announcing that B.I.L. is inviting a developer or a development team to lease the two, one-acre parcels of land on Holy Emmanuel Avenue and at Lake Independence Way. These matters by law area matters that should go through the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Works and involve the Accountant General and Auditor General. Instead, Barrow created a B.I.L. with hand-picked cronies to handle public monies.

B.I.L. has an office on the 6th Floor of the Matalon Building on Coney Drive. Far away from Southside and far above the poor suffering peoples on Southside who desperately need all the help they can get.

of being an integral part of Belizean history and lore

The Brewery That Shouldn’t Be

Left to Right: Eric M. Bowen, The Right Honourable George Cadle Price, Barry M. Bowen. 1971 It is believed to be what the native Mayas called Belize and connects Belikin with our Belizean heritage.

On the monumental date of May 29th, 1969, Eric W. M. Bowen and his son Barry M. Bowen founded Belize Brewing Company.

The pair, encouraged by their family, had a vision. The first step was to see if that vision could attract the investors necessary to launch such an ambitious project, so they hired an international brewing consultancy firm to conduct a feasibility study.

To their disappointment, the study concluded that: • Belize is too small to support a Brewery; • The international breweries would crush a local producer; • An independent brewery in Belize has little chance for success.

Today, Belize Brewing celebrates fifty years of pursuing excellence. The company remains independent and family-owned, today run by Michael H. M. Bowen, an eighth-generation Belizean.

None of this would be possible without the hard work of thousands of Belizeans over the years, or the avid support of the people of Belize.

The People’s United Party raises a glass to an amazing journey over the last half-century, and toasts to the next fifty years of independence, continued passion, and great beer!

THE BELIZE TIMES The Auditor General’s Report, Corruption, and Accountability

By Gilroy Usher, Sr. “Where do the evils like corruption arise from? It comes from the never-ending greed. The fight for corruption-free ethical society will have to be fought against this greed and replaced with ‘what can I give’ spirit.” -A. P. J. Abdul Kalam For the past ten years the Belize National Budget has been over a billion dollars. Yet more Belizeans are living in poverty today than a decade ago. That’s mainly due to massive corruption by a government entrusted to ensure that the funds and resources of the country are used to provide a better life for all Belizeans.

As Leader of the Opposition in early 2008, Mr. Barrow boasted of having a two-sided machete to chop off the least whiff of corruption with a UDP administration. The latest Auditor General’s (A.G) report (20142015) was leaked last week, and it shows that since 2008 this administration has steadfastly refused to implement the most basic measures to weed out corruption in public office.

That in turn has maintained a bureaucracy which has allowed numerous ministers and their cronies to become wealthy individuals by robbing the national treasury mercilessly.

It’s now 2019. To be of maximum value to a country, the audited report of a nation’s finances should be presented to parliament no later than a year after the year in review. After that time has elapsed many of the suspected players in graft cannot be located. The latest Auditor General’s report is four years late; nevertheless the government has still not yet presented it to the House. Repeated requests for sufficient well-trained personnel and other resources to audit the various ministries and government departments on a timely basis have fallen on deaf ears. Why? The millions of dollars that would be shielded from lost to corruption annually with the proper auditing of government offices countrywide, would be more than twenty times the cost of providing the office of the Auditor General with the necessary human resources and other important things to carry out its function effectively on time.

Every year concerned organizations complain about the administration’s violation of the Finance and Audit (Reform) Act. That occurs when the government spends $10 million or more over the approved estimates for a fiscal year without first getting approval from parliament for the additional spending.

The latest A.G.’s report shows that despite that concern, for fiscal year 2014- 2015 the administration spent $90 million over the approved estimates for that duration without getting prior approval from the House. To sanitize this unlawful

spending a supplementary spending bill was later passed retroactively in the House for the over budgeted spending without any breakdown of the use of the funds. Ideal condition for corruption. A similar bill was passed to legitimize the unlawful spending of over $400 million from PetroCaribe without prior approval from parliament. That $400 million was a low interest loan from Venezuela for poverty alleviation. Apart from a couple roundabouts the country has nothing to show for that large loan, which Belizean taxpayers have to repay. Concern about the spending of the PetroCaribe funds was raised in a previous A.G. report.

Thanks to the Opposition a matter is now before the Supreme Court to force the administration to respect the Finance and Audit (Reform) Act. If the court rules in favor of the Opposition, any future government would have to obtain approval for parliament to spend $10 million or more in excess of what was budgeted for the current fiscal year.

The latest Audit Report also revealed that for fiscal year 2014- 2015, the Ministry of Natural Resources, which the PM, himself, calls a hotbed of corruption, and the Accountant General’s office among other ministries did not submit a list of outstanding revenue for their respective offices. Again, Why? That is a very serious matter. The uncollected revenue for those ministries amount to tens of millions of dollars. Since such outstanding revenue was not disclosed for auditing, the door is left wide open for all manner of corrupt deals with uncollected government funds.

With the power to investigate wrongdoing in any ministry or government department a properly structured and financed Public Accounts Committee (PAC) is one of the most effective bodies in the fight against corruption in public office. The 2014- 2015 A.G. report noted that Government’s majority control of the committee ensured its failure in the fight against corruption. That’s because the persons suspected are the same individuals, who use their rubber stamps representatives on the committee to block any investigation that could expose wrong doing by ruling politicians and their cronies.

It’s time for A.G. reports which show that the resources of the country are being used to address the needs of the people for land, proper housing, jobs, safer communities, and greater access to healthcare and education among other things for a better life. Make it happen P.M. There is too much corruption in government.

COST OF SILENCE United Women’s Group Member contribution I read a post on social media where society often times goes through three stages in times of distress; a cycle of some sort.

Shock, Adjust, and Shock. I bring this up due to the most recent news article whereby a young woman was kept captive by her boyfriend for ten days, being abused day after day until fortunately she was released gladly still alive. The media houses called it a “bizzare story” one which left many in “shock”.

A part of me can’t help but to roll my eyes when people say they’re “shocked” at the accusations and stories of men hurting women. After countless attacks on women; shocked does not seem to be the most suitable word. Angry, upset, sickened… sure. But shocked? Men harm women every single day. It’s not shocking. Maybe if we all stopped being so “shocked” all the time we’d start working on remedying this problem.

As a political organization, and most of all as women, one of our struggles has been raising awareness about domestic violence and sexual violence towards women. We understand it happens with men too, and we won’t belittle that. However, the fact of the matter is that these types of violent attacks are often times targeted at the “vulnerable”, women and children.

It has been a dark first half of year for our country; so far this year, approximately eleven women have lost their lives at the hands of their spouses/boyfriends/ex or senseless crimes, and you would be disgusted by the number of cases of violence/ rape in which the assaulter gets away with the crime.

Today is the day to remember all these victims; and, how have our officials paid their respects for all these lives lost? With maybe a minute of silence. Let me tell you, silence is definitely not the way to honor these victims. Silence about these crimes is actually THE problem.

We need to discuss this; discuss ways of changing the legal framework regarding these crimes. If you want to honor the victims, provide justice for the victims of the past, and make the necessary legal adjustments needed so that there won’t be more victims in the future. In 1884, Henrietta Dugdale, pioneer of the first female suffrage society in Australia, said that women’s anger was compounded by the fact that those who inflicted violence upon women had a share in making the laws while their victims did not.

Over a century later, we still have administrations in place where women are underrepresented. Five out of forty-four parliamentarians in Belize are women, only two of them are elected representatives. Do we see the problem? Belize is filled with competent, educated women who are willing to stand up and make a difference. We need to encourage and support their efforts. We need to stand up and speak out.

How many more lives will the silence cost? Domestic violence, violence against women are public crimes. We should never be silent. For Anny Young, Alarice Andrewin, Anna Villanueva, Baby Alyssa and the many others we should not remain silent. For all the victims out there, please, don’t be silent either. You might be saving a life.

BELIZEAN WOMEN IN THE PATH OF VIOLENCE INCLUDING MURDER

June 25, 2019 For two the past two months our Belizean women have made the headlines in various newscasts, but not in a good way. They have been the victims of domestic abuse or crime which has ended with their deaths. In the past when we heard reports of murder it was mostly gang related but for the past 3 years the dynamics have been changing and we see more women being the victims of crimes.

Police still have no leads into the murder of a Security Guard Marcia Talbott who was on duty at the Bowen & Bowen Crystal bottling company in Ladyville on Sunday June 16, 2019. Police have ruled out robbery as the motive but they have said that Talbott was the possible target. She was shot multiple times to the head and died instantly meanwhile another male Security was shot to the back.

On Sunday June 23, 2019 a woman fatally stabbed once to the chest.

Yolanda Requena who is a resident of Bullet Tree Falls, Cayo District was standing in a yard, talking to a man when she was accosted by the man’s wife who stabbed her once to the heart. The accused is still being sought by police and the motive is a possible love triangle.

A similar incident took place on May 12, 2019 where Anna Villanueva, 19, Corozal Resident was fatally stabbed to the heart by another 19 year old female identified as Zenna Armstrong. The motive is also a possible love triangle and Police say alcohol was a major factor. Armstrong has since been charged with manslaughter and is out on bail.

On Tuesday May 14, 2019, 31 year old Francisca Noehemy Duarte Caseres, 31, domestic of Big Falls, Toledo was shot and killed by her common-law-husband, Andrew Caliz, 47, Businessman.

According to reports the couple were alone sometime around 4

a.m. that morning when she was fatally wounded. He has been charged with the murder of his common-lawwife.

On Monday June 24, 2019 sometime around 8:00pm, Katia Williams, 50, was standing near a residence on Kraal Road when a lone gunman fired 12 shots in her direction. Williams was hit to the left side of the breast and abdomen and was rushed to the KHMH where she is listed in a stable condition.

And, while the case of Talbott remains unsolved, Police left no stone unturned in solving the case of Excelsior High School Principal, Alarice Andrewin, 44, and her two friends, Guatemalan nationals, Vidal Antonio Yuman Cacho, 39, and Maria Delfina Juarez Lucas. The bodies were found on June 10, 2019 and within less than 5 days police were able to break the case saying robbery was the motive. Two men were detained for the triple murder but, An-

drewin’s SUV that was stolen from inside her yard has still not been found. The latter allows the public to be skeptical on this motive presented.

And, in what sounds like scenes from straight out of a movie, On Sunday June 23, 2019, a woman, Illona Coote, 30, made a report that her boyfriend, Vincent Pascascio, 32, kept her against her will and repeatedly beat her. She told police that she was at Pascascio’s home on the 13th and when she was ready to leave, he did not allow her. The woman from Cayo, 30, told Police that she was at his home on the 13th of June, and when it was time to leave Pascascio refused held her back. She said while held against her will at the home he badly beat her over and over until she was finally released 10 days after on June 22. Pascascio has since been charged with kidnapping and wounding.

Meribaldo Reymundo Pech better known as ‘Don Baldy’ A responsible provider, father, loving husband, caring grandfather and faithful friend.

Delivered by Granddaughter: Suhie Aguilar My ‘grampa’ Baldy would always share stories with us about his life, his views and about working hard. It’s no secret that he loved his family and dedicated his entire life to us. He never denied us anything as long as he was able to provide it. We were his world, or as he would say, El es el dueño del circo.

Although he always seemed serious, he was the kindest and most humorous person you would have ever known. If you ever visited his home it was a guarantee that he would have a long conversation with you and have you laughing at his jokes. My grandad didn’t smile much but when he did, he brightened our home as he was the patriarch of our family.

My grandpa didn’t grow up with his biological parents, due to the passing away of his mother, Bartola Oliva. Instead he was nurtured by his paternal aunt Cecilia and her husband Mr. William Burke, whom he always accredited for his business demeanor. Mr. Burke taught him how to sell Boledo, play dice and work in their store at a young age.

His siblings Nelly Sabido and the late Alma Orosco who grew with an uncle were very beloved to him. When he was 17, my great-grandfather, Mr. Eulalio Pech, taught him to cut hair.

From there, he began his career as a barber.

My grandad had a saying, that everyone in my family is familiar with: “Rum I want, rum I crave, rum shall I take me to my grave”.

He also worked in the merry go rounds. He always spoke about the man who owned it, and asked him to travel with them. But he knew life had other plans for him, until he met and married the love of his life, Patricia Hulse. This marriage produced four wonderful children Esmy, Baldemar Jr, Gricelie and Alondra.

My grandpa is also survived by two sons from a former relationship; Curt and Elias Pech. As well as Jesus Aguilar & Margarito Sima whom he considered as other sons & Marisol Magaña as another daughter. He is also survived by his daughter in law Dilcia Pech and sons-in-law Chap and Rayford, and a very dear friend Mr. Jose Villanueva.

My grandad kept being a bar-

ber, saved money, bought his first house and opened a grocery shop for my grandma, in an effort to secure his family with food to eat and a roof over their heads.

He engaged in the money exchange business with his friend the late Antonio Castillo, and from then on, he worked arduously to give his family the best he could.

Grandpa, your cherished memories will forever linger in our hearts and minds.

I write with great concern as to people that are given the title of J.P. in our community. In Trinidad Village, the UDP chairman candidate was bestowed this title and sadly, I think it’s underserved.

After the PUP victory at our village council elections held yesterday June 23rd, we all wanted to celebrate our victory towards CHANGE. We organized an impromptu victory parade though the main streets of our little community. In the midst of our celebration, this individual (now J.P.) was with some of his affiliates in his yard and upon seeing our motorcade, allowed his cronies to ‘stone’ us with huge rocks.

It is my understanding that these individuals are in the community to uphold the PEACE like their title says... Justice of the Peace. Then, why would such individuals disgrace this honorable title given to them by allowing or maybe even encouraging this kind of behavior?

It is my humble opinion that people like these, should NOT hold such valuable title since they are a disgrace to other J.P’s who genuinely serve our country. Something needs to be done to correct this issue and even monitor who is given this honorable title... To see if they even deserve it.

We are all cognizant of the fact that our Belize is a jewel; and, we often live where everyone else vacations. That is the easy part; that is the sweet part. The bitter part is rooted to the center of our core, it has been plaguing us and continues to plague us and our government has decided to turn a blind eye towards it—Crime. Apart from government corruption, the biggest most rampant social problem that persists within the corridors of our great land is that of Crime.

These past days senseless murders have overtaken all news headlines and violence towards youth has taken center stage. This problem like all other major problems

has warranted a ‘0’ response from our government. At this current juncture, the Government of Belize led by the United Democratic Party is more concerned with touring the country and selecting a new leader. In fact, the Minister of National Security chooses to use the youth to boost his bid for leadership. Mr. Minister, why not do a youth brigade for endangered youth with a purpose, one that will offer them an opportunity out of the streets and into a classroom or work site?

Where are your priorities Mr. Minister?

Our young people are dying senselessly out on the streets and all we hear is a Press Release, Rain Check sir, a press release does not give the citizens of our country any security! It does not offer meaningful change to a dying population that sees no light at the end of the tunnel.

The discussion about crime is not

27 a political one, this issue should not be divided amongst red or blue and as a result the ruling government should invite all stakeholders at the discussion table and draft meaningful legislation that will not only curb the situation but will also offer the at-risk youth an opportunity to better their lives and of their immediate family. We owe it to our people; we owe it to those we claim to care for! As the Village council elections ensue and General Election approaches the UDP party, will claim to care, they will pretend to have a plan and might even shed some fake tears as the death toll rises; therefore, I urge all voters to reject these false prophets, for even the devil can quote scripture from time to time! The UDP have been there for 11+ years and have developed no meaningful plan, no meaningful course of action that will bring change to a society and its people that desperately need it. At least we can see the end of the UDP administration.

La Red de Monitoreo de Sargazo de Cancún difundió este lunes su más reciente informe, elaborado con base en imágenes satelitales, por un equipo encabezado por Esteban Amaro, de profesión hidrobiólogo.

“Una importante acumulación de sargazo se ha estado concentrando durante las últimas dos semanas al oeste de la Isla caribeña de Jamaica, esta gran ‘mancha de sargazo’ mide más de 550 kilómetros de diámetro y se encuentra a casi 1000 km de distancia de las costas de Quintana Roo”, se lee en el informe.

“Debido a las corrientes dominantes y a la dirección de los vientos del Sur Sureste, se espera que llegue a nuestras costas durante la próxima semana, por lo que se esperan recales de mediana a alta intensidad en prácticamente toda la costa”, alertaron.

La organización civil estima que las regiones del centro y sur del Estado serán las más afectadas, sobre todo el tramo que va de Tulum y Xcalak a Chetumal.

De acuerdo con la Universidad Internacional de Florida, la superficie que abarcaba hasta mayo la mancha de sargazo en el Atlántico medía 896 kilómetros cuadrados. En mayo, la superficie creció un 14 por ciento con respecto a abril, cuando comprendía 787 kilómetros cuadrados.

Fue en julio de 2018, cuando alcanzó una cifra récord: 2 mil 800 kilómetros cuadrados, el doble de la superficie de la Ciudad de México. (Agencia Reforma)
