“The PUP has a Plan” Party Leader John Briceño on Channel Five’s ‘Open Your Eyes’ June 22 During the interview the Party Leader spoke on various topics.

Ahead are a few.

National OverSight Committee “It was a privilege to come together for both the opposition and the government to work as one. This pandemic was and still continues to be a serious one. It worked fairly well. The Cabinet now feels that constitutionally they run things in this country. The Prime Minister informed the NOC that they had no legal standing.”

There was no pressure on the Party Leader to resign as this was his own decision and it was respected by members of the PUP. Some members felt that the Opposition shouldn’t be entangled with the Government. The Party Leader explained that it was “time to move on” and “the time was right.”

PUP Party Leader also voiced if later on “God Forbid” we are in the same position that he could return to the Oversight committee. Also, given that the PUP would be in government that he would invite whoever is leader of the then opposition to join.

Covid Relief Program Party Leader John Briceño voiced that his ideas or the PUPs were not dealt with or “not given any seriousness.” This was especially noted when he presented a 10 million dollar plan. This plan was to see government purchase “chicken, rice, beans, beef and pork” from our Belizean farmers and then stored. Instead of giving imported foodstuff to Belizeans they would get these in their Food relief. The plan would have 100, 000 Belizeans fed with local food for three months.

The fringe benefit to the economy would be money that the farmers would get as a sort of relief as their produce would be bought locally.

These same excess in food products could be exported to Guatemala or Mexico later on.

But no can do. The UDP did not accept this proposal by Party Leader John Briceño. Imported goods were and are being given out in the Food Assistance Program.

Aid for Small Business Given the liquidity in the banks this “could be used to help small business for the short term.” Of course, the UDP would need to develop legislation and a plan. None of these happened. The UDP is devoid of innovative ideas. The plan would also include help from the IFI’s. But the UDP have found it close to impossible to get any international help.

Coronavirus Party Leader John Briceño stated that he feels the UDP “Failed in educating people about this virus.” “We have to learn to live with the virus. We can’t stay locked down forever.” The Party Leader accepted that the borders cannot open but as long as we find how to protect the vulnerable then we should be able to open the “airport is a controlled environment.” The Party Leader offered that with testing, the tracing app and secluded resorts the opening of the airport is something he supports. “people want to come to Belize. They want to come to Covid-free place.”

Printing Money The Party Leader pointed to the 17,000 public officers need to be paid from money borrowed from the Central Bank. “We are putting at risk our dollar...the exchange.” He went on to explain that the IMF did offer some 18.6Million to Belize but that this was rejected by the Prime Minister because of conditionalities. The PM was adamant that he would not sign anything like that. Conditionalities of course are given to countries that are in an economic crisis and need to become more fiscally disciplined. Party Leader mentioned that the PM never did outline what conditionalities were presented by the International Monetary Fund.

Biggest concern is the economy.

“They(UDP) did not understand that thousands of farmers do not have resources. They need help.” He noted that the Government placed all eggs in the tourism basket. At the press conference of June 25 it seems that the PM still does not understand this.

“The PUP government will review projects and we will see if money can be diverted to agroproductive sector.” He reminded the Belizean people that he and the PUP had written the lending organizations and institutions.

Like a stinging wasp, the UDP is fluttering from IFI to whoever will listen pleading to their gods for a 2nd coming of Petrocaribe.

But Alas, Chavez was one of a kind. They are an expired government hated for their 12 years of promises that rotted into brazen lies. “Millions and Millions and Millions” turned to “revenue down to a trickle.” It is easy to tell the UDP that ‘we told you so.’

But that does not help any of the suffering Belizeans. God’s mercy saved us from Covid and now that we as a people have it under some semblance of control the UDP want to take credit.

While they are taking credit with one mouth they are then uttering cuts on the other. While they are busy trying to open Tourism they are ignoring the unemployed and the entire Agroindustry.

Up to now the UDP has cut the jobs of many…even as they claim that everyone will keep their jobs. The following list of jobs CUT is in no way exhaustive: Belize Tourism Board Jobs | Specialist Doctors | National Institute of Culture and History needed staff | Our Children’s Education Subsidies | Belize Telecommunications Limited Salary Cuts | All Public Officers and

Teachers will not get their yearly increment.

Of course the latest in the list is the cut to students with scholarships in Cuba. Please note that since the UDP is on their way out they care not for the future of Belize.

ig business was in the news this week. Scotia Bank has found a buyer and they are moving on and out. Upon the completion of the transaction it will mean that Belize will have only three local banks namely, Heritage Bank, Belize Bank and Atlantic Bank. First Caribbean was bought out by Heritage Bank in August 2015. The license of Choice Bank was revoked in June 2018 followed closely by Atlantic International Bank in April 2019. Atlantic International Bank is embroiled in the largest international real estate scam in history. This current merger, between Scotia Bank and Belize Bank however, is being carefully scrutinized by the Central Bank of Belize. We may find little comfort in that fact, as it is quite possible that it was Central Bank’s extremely lax oversight which caused the problems at Choice Bank to go unnoticed and unchecked in the first instance. The Central Bank has given no indication whether the abrupt exit of Scotia Bank will have any negative effects on the banking industry. As readers may recall the International Monetary Fund had warned Belize that losing correspondent banking relationships are key risks to financial stability. Scotia Bank was the only bank in Belize to have remained unchallenged by the de-risking initiative used by the USA in order to combat money laundering.

While the PM likes to blame the Rona as the culprit to all our current economic woes, in reality it only accelerated our imminent downfall. He knows it, we know it and Scotia definitely knows it. Scotia had been the most profitable bank in Belize for years. Suddenly things took a turn for the worst and between 2016 and 2018 profits fell by more than 50%. Their business has never recovered and in fact continues a downward spiral. They have lost all confidence that our economy will recover and they want out and now! Scotia in fact was so desperate to make that sale that even though the last Quarterly Financial from the Central Bank reports their net worth at about 81.37M US they sold for just 30.5M US. The Lord got a huge fyah sale discount amounting roughly to 62.5%. When a banking giant like Scotia is willing to take that kind of a hit just so they can run it really is a vote of no confidence in the Belizean economy and its current leaders.

While the Governor of the Central Bank is so very cheerful about the sale the bigger question is what does it mean for the Belizean economy when the only bank to have survived de-risking without loss of correspondent banking relations leaves? as grandes empresas estaban en las noticias esta semana. Scotia Bank ha encontrado un comprador y avanzan y se salen. Una vez concluida la transacción, Belice sólo tendrá tres bancos locales, a saber, el Heritage Bank, el Belize Bank y el Atlantic Bank. El First Caribbean fue comprado por Heritage Bank en agosto de 2015. La licencia de Choice Bank fue revocada en junio de 2018 seguido de cerca por Atlantic International Bank en abril de 2019.

Atlantic International Bank está envuelto en la mayor estafa inmobiliaria internacional de la historia. Él lo sabe, nosotros lo sabemos y Scotiabank definitivamente lo sabe. Scotia había sido el banco más rentable de Belice durante años. De repente las cosas tomaron un giro para lo peor y entre 2016 y 2018 las ganancias cayeron en más de un 50%. Su negocio nunca se ha recuperado y de hecho continúa una espiral descendente. ¡Han perdido toda confianza en que nuestra economía se recuperará y quieren salirse y ahora! De hecho, Scotia estaba tan desesperada por hacer esa venta que a pesar de que el último informe financiero trimestral del Banco Central reporta su valor neto en alrededor de 81.37M US vendieron por sólo 30.5M US. El Lord obtuvo un enorme descuento de venta de remate que asciende aproximadamente al 62,5%. Cuando un gigante bancario como Scotia está dispuesto a tomar ese tipo de golpe sólo para que pueda marcharse es realmente un voto de no confianza en la economía de Belice y sus líderes actuales.

Si bien la Gobernadora del Banco Central está muy contenta con la venta, la pregunta más importante es ¿qué significa para la economía de Belice que el único banco que ha sobrevivido a riesgos sin pérdida de relaciones bancarias de corresponsalía se vaya? ¿Qué más ha llevado a Scotia a recortar pérdidas tan significativas para irse? La economía está en caída libre y los que pueden salirse lo hacen tan rápido como pueden, pero para los beliceños normales esto no es una opción. Hay aquellos que se han saciado en el abrevadero y ahora abandonan este país en caos y ruina total. ¡Belice es nuestro hogar, debemos capear esta tormenta y quedarnos para recoger los pedazos y reconstruir un Belice que funcione para todos nosotros!

Medical madness The Belize Times has been able to confirm that the KHMH has terminated the services of two other doctors who had provided a valuable service to the facility for years, and there are more names on the chopping block. According to sources at the hospital, the Government of Belize has cut the subvention to the nation’s largest referral hospital and home of the raccoon. So not only has the raccoon been forced to find better accommodations, but patients are now not able to access specialist services there.

This is madness. Dean Barrow sat in front of the nation and talked about the millions and millions and millions which he had been able to source for the Ministry of Health. Let’s be real. There were two tragic deaths from COVID-19, but the pandemic has so far spared the nation. No huge amount of money has had to be spent in health. No quarantine facilities were built.

Ask anybody who had to sit in a tent or under a canvas because they displayed symptoms. Where did all the millions go? Health care workers are being punished. They can’t even access toilet paper in hospitals countrywide. They have to find their own transportation to respond to emergency situations. What is wrong with you, Mr. Barrow? You are sick in the head.

We demand to know what you did with all the millions that were supposed to go to the Ministry of Health. The nation is grieving for our poor Belize.

Will the Lord Provide?

The Belize Times has been informed that not one, not two but THREE of the UDP clowns who will be going to convention in July to contest leadership of the UNBELIEVABLY DEAD PARTY (UDP) have requested meetings with the Lord – no, not that one. We mean Lord Michael Ashcroft, who has been making his presence felt in a whole lotta circles lately, making a whole lotta people very nervous. In fact, we are also reliably informed that this week, to be exact, the Lord granted audience to one of those very persistent, even annoying candidates who wants to be leader of the UDP so bad that he’s promised to stop beating up women if given the chance. That meeting, we are told, happened mid-week in San Pedro, and while the candidate who went begging didn’t come out smiling, he also didn’t stop

at the nearest bar to drown his sorrows. We’ve always heard that the Lord will provide, but this lord isn’t known to dabble in bad investments for a living. And right about now, putting even a dollar into the likes of those four who would want to be leader of the red rabble is the worst possible investment to be made. We’ll check back to see if the other two wannabe leaders, hat in hand, will be granted appointments with the billionaire banker.

Mason’s Man Sources inside that rotten mess otherwise known as the Undeniably Deceased Party (UDP) have told the Belize Times that a coalition of powerful insiders and financiers have come together to put a political hit on John Saldivar, who was alive then dead and then, apparently very much alive again. Those insiders who claim they vaguely remember when the UDP was a party with some integrity (probably for the two seconds that Dean Oliver had his two-sided machete in hand) have reportedly approached the Prime Minister to deliver an ultimatum to him. We are told that Mr. Barrow has one week to find a way to get Saldivar disqualified in the race for leader, or all hell is going to break loose. It’s kinda hard to imagine what else can go wrong for the UDP, but we’re always hopeful.

Other sources in that wretched party say that Barrow has summoned his faithful, very large Chairman, also Attorney General and Minister of National Security, to a meeting at the resort in Placencia this weekend where they will no doubt try to make bad for that wonderful, saintly John Saldivar. As we write this, we’re not sure which images disturb us more – John Saldivar naked in Mason’s bed or Mike Peyrefitte in speedos on the beach in Placencia. Lord save us. The real Lord, not the one who’s busy trying to dodge UDP politicians asking for handouts.

Jamal Again This damn Jamal is always into some scheme or another, we swear.

We figure he learned how to wheel and deal in prison when he had to find a way to dodge suitors after dropping the soap. This time now he’s come up with this big plan to give away lots in Sandhill to residents of Mesopotamia. According to Jamal bin Laden Barrow, thug turned rapper turned rabbi turned politician, all you gotta do is go to his office and sign up and it’s a done deal. Except that nobody informed the village council in Sandhill which is in charge of the land there. Jamal might be a pro in the pen, but he’s just a young punk in politics and doesn’t understand that you have to actually serve the people well, and you actually have to do things in their best interests. We’d say he should stick to his day job, but that fool hasn’t worked a day in his life. It’s time for all of you to go.

QUESTIONS TO THE MINISTERS

1. Will the Minister of Finance please let the Belizean people know how many Belizeans applied for unemployment relief in the month of June? Oh wait a minute, he can’t because they shut down the portal for Belizeans to apply for unemployment relief.

2. Considering that he invited the CEO in the Ministry of Health and the Director of Health Services to join him at Thursday’s Press Conference, will the Prime Minister say why his Minister of Health Pablo was not invited to be a part of his press conference? And will the Prime Minister not agree that given the state of our health ministry that he is totally disappointed in his Health Minister Pablo Marin?

3. Will the Minister of Works please inform the Belizean people who is being contracted to do the urgently needed repairs on the George Price Highway near mile 38 and, then, how much will it cost?

4. Will the Minister of Agriculture please inform Belizeans what he has done to assist the cattle farmers and other farmers in Belize who have lost so much because of the government’s wrong-headed policy with respect to cattle exports? And will the Minister not agree that the decision by Cabinet to stop the export of cattle to Guatemala has indeed cost the Belizean people millions of dollars in losses?

If Something Feels Off, You NEED to Speak Up Part I

There are so many issues to write about that are impacting our beautiful country Belize – our poor road conditions, frequent road accidents, low literacy rate, massive unemployment and the list can go on and on. Covid-19 just came and added its own layer of challenges but it has also presented a multitude of rich blessings as well.

And just as we were starting to enjoy the relaxed measures of quarantine, a different type of Covid-19 surfaces that had the country spinning once more. It was not the usual gun violence but allegations of sexual harassment and abuse in a prestigious institution that we would hope would be “immaculate” because of the function and responsibility it hold to the nation.

The issue of sexual harassment/ abuse has been an individual fight for both sexes and a collective struggle for many institutions all over the global just like the fight we now have with Covid-19 – no cure, no vaccine. I reflect on my own most recent experiences with males feeling the need to send pictures of their reproductive organ. My initial response at the first incident was anger as I felt violated and disrespected. Angry at this unknown male for having the idea that his private part would be attractive to me. As a nurse, organs are organs.

What matters is if they can function effectively for the “patient”, in this case the perverted males themselves and would they be able to satisfy another as they so claim. So it quickly became a simple anatomy and physiology moment and I dismissed their poor disgusting taste in behavior. My words were not nice to say the least and of course a permanent BLOCK and REPORT was done on Facebook.

So that was the unwanted picture ordeals and I am sure they will probably continue.

Then there are the unwanted words, “Hi Hon, Hey Bae, Sweetness, Hey you up, Can we talk?, … ” and unwanted messenger calls at weird hours of the mornings and nights simply because the world of technology makes it so easy to communicate to anyone, anywhere at any time. I recall the “hissing of the teeth” that was used some years ago. But some men have become way too darning to share

pictures because technology is at their disposal and repeating unwanted words day after day. Being self-aware and not allowing each single unwanted words to upset my day, I have always had a controlled response in the past that I still use to this day. The unwanted pictures caught me off guard. But I generally utter some kind words in response to what would be unwanted “greeting” or “compliments”. Some simple word spoken kindly but firmly that command respect for me as I do not allow myself to become a victim of somebody’s acid.

Those words are usually, “Good morning Sir!” or “God Bless you Sir!” These words most often than not, have had the effect to stop the perpetrators in their tracks and not another unwanted word said or gesture done.

These simple words have changed the reaction of many men who uttered unwanted words to me over the years. I recalled, a man said, “Nobody has ever called me Sir before Miss”. That struck up a conversation that I hope would have changed his life forever. In that brief street side stranger meet stranger conversation, I learnt a lot of his rough childhood, and as I listen non-judgmentally, the concept of self-respect, self-esteem and self-love were parting blessings over him. Not all men would be as receptive to this response, but I am happy they generally do! To the few that didn’t, I disregard the actions and say a prayer in my heart for them. But all this is just one person’s experience with sexual harassment and being self-aware.

But when the bell sounds an alarm of an institutional issue of alleged reports of extortion, maltreatment, sexual assault and sexual advances in a pillar institution such as the Belize Defense Force (BDF), this calls for an immediate comprehensive investigation with what should be immediate disciplinary actions to stabilize the core values that the institution represents to the nation. The institution being the soldiers of course, as the barracks cannot perform the core value of freedom, equality, trust, community, collaboration and usability.

The report made in January 2020 by the brave 50 females BDF recruits, is by no means indicating, that the Belize Coast Guard (BCG) and the sister institution the Belize Police Force (BDF) are not plagued by these same issues. But as a nation, to date, based on how sexual harassment, sexual abuse and the like are handled with victims being seen as the trouble maker, fewer and fewer men and women, will come forward to get the help they desperately need. The press release by the Ministry of National Security issued June 1, 2020, at 3:30 pm, almost five months after the reports were made by the BDF recruits, does not indicate that the 50 cases were investigated as a priority. When the tragedy occurred with the helicopter, an investigation was launched and a report was provided to the public almost within two weeks or less. Whether we were satisfied or not as a nation with that report is any matter.

We lost some of our most skilled men in that tragedy.

BARROW TELEMEDIA LIMITED! A Tale of Greed & Destruction

Thursday, 25 June 2020 It is almost impossible to remember the days when BTL, for business purposes known as Belize Telemedia Limited but in reality controlled by the Prime Minister, was a proud, thriving entity, a stable source of employment for many Belizeans.

Those were the days before Mr. Barrow decided to ‘strong’ the company, paving the way for his law firm and a multitude of family members and cronies to make millions. While those UDP functionaries got rich, they sucked the life from the company.

This week, BTL is asking, for the second time, for persons to go on voluntary retirement because the company is on life-support, and has been displaying death throes for some time. The former telecommunications giant, which the Prime Minister proudly claimed would be worth over a billion dollars in the next few years, was one of the first to introduce pay-cuts and mass layoff of staff as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. But the truth is that even before Covid reared its head, the company has been laying off staff.

Mr. Barrow is singlehandedly responsible for the demise of BTL. There are many political observers who claim that Barrow’s seizing of BTL was a carefully orchestrated plot to enrich his family members. And they say there is merit in that assertion. For more than eight years the Prime Minister engaged in costly rounds of litigation, telling Belizeans that he would never give in to the ‘white devil.’ BTL is for Belizeans, said Mr. Barrow, and he would fight to the proverbial death to defend the company which ‘we owned.’

It was a position that Barrow held on to while millions and millions of dollars were paid to select attorneys including the Prime Minister’s brother and ex-wife. Taxpayers were forced to watch helplessly as the Prime Minister took it a step further and placed his unqualified, unskilled son at the helm of the com-

FIRE-SALE: PAYOFFS OR PERIL

The announced acquisition of Scotiabank Belize Limited (SBL)

by Caribbean Investment Holding Limited (CIHL) has created a stir amongst the financial sector and the customers of the SBL. The main concern is the price SBL is being sold or maybe undersold for. A fire-sale price of US $30 million; that is $100 million less than its identified net worth pronounced

by Central Bank of Belize (CBB ).

BHL subsidiary CIHL has agreed to the purchase price of up to $30.5 million to acquire SBL. This includes SBL’s shareholder equity of $28.5 million and a premium of $1.5 million.

Should the shareholders’ equity value exceed $28.5 million prior to the closing of the deal, it is agreed that an additional $4.5 million will be paid. Nonetheless, it is mandated in the agreement that offering cannot exceed $35 million.

Scotiabank has been operating in Belize since 1968 in the retail and commercial banking services to its customers. The banking industry was established in Belize in 1903, in the Bank of British Honduras.

Several of its Directors came from the local elites. Eventually the Bank of British Honduras was bought by the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC).

Thereafter the RBC was purchased

by Lord Michael Ashcroft in the mid-eighties.

The divestiture of SBL is viewed as a sudden undertaking. However, Brian Porter, Scotiabank President and CEO proffered that “exiting these non-core operations is consistent with a strategy that began five years ago to sharpen focus, increase scale in core geographies and businesses, improve earnings quality and reduce risk to the bank.”

Additionally, Ignacio Deschamps, head of international banking at Scotiabank explained that “due to the increasing regulatory complexities and the need for continued investment in technology to support our regulatory requirement we made the decision to focus the bank’s effort on those markets with significant scale in which we can make the greatest difference for our customers.”

Notwithstanding, it is this writer’s opinion that this is another indication of a loss of confidence in Belize’s economic future. The acquisition comes on the heels of Dean Barrow’s proposed idea of issuing U. S. dollar denominated Treasury Notes to augment the stock of CBB reserves. Economists suggest that such a move is to quell investor’s fear of the advent of economic storms—Devaluation, default.

tral Bank of Belize (CBB), Joy Grant is singing praises that the “significant investment and expansion represents a bold expression of confidence in long term potential of the economy.”

Grant added that such “faith is praise worthy.”

Glenn Ysaguirre, former governor of CBB retort, regarding Joy Grant cheerleading the venture, was that the regulator must be “satisfied that

the entities involved are capable of conducting this transaction without disrupting the system.”

Interestingly, Ysaguirre posits that “acquisition and mergers can have significant pay-offs or can introduce significant peril.”

The most obvious “peril” is the majority control of the banking industry. The oligopolistic nature is realized in the banking system when one bank acquires a major percentage of all deposits and loans. Belize Bank now owns over 50% and is the market leader. Hence, if not properly regulated could result in the financial institution dictating the rates which the rest of the banking institutions will certainly follow. Case in point, in

2006 Belize Bank increased cost in non- performing loans resulting in the customers absorbing the cost.

Another concern over the venture is the manner of payment for retained earnings of SBL. Ysaguirre fiddled around the concern cunningly suggesting the CBB reserves could be undermined if payments are made in US dollars.

Presently the fragility of CBB reserves lends grave concerns.

Superficially, the divestiture of SBL looks like a beneficial transaction for Belize’s banking industry.

However, when everything is considered it sends a hollow ring. One of haunt in the future for Belize’s banking industry.

Both parties have already tendered their assurances that Scotiabank Bank’s customers, employees, as well as its financial footprint in Belize will be protected. Further, the acquisition process will not change the way customers currently use or access their accounts, while the Central Bank works expeditiously to complete the acquisition review.

This significant investment and expansion by the Belize Bank represent a bold expression of confidence in the long-term potential of the economy. Such faith is praiseworthy, particularly during this period of global crisis. It is noted that well before the onset of the Covid-19 crisis, a procession of bank consolidations and mergers was underway in the region. Canadian international banks, whose presence in the region stretch back almost 150 years, announced a refocus away from the Caribbean and Central America.

While the transaction between these two private companies is commercial in nature, it is the Central Bank’s overarching interest and mandate to safeguard the monetary and financial systems stability and to protect the Belizean dollar for the wellbeing of Belize.

As the regulator, the Central Bank has commenced a detailed review of this Agreement and will ensure that foreign currency already in the banking system is not used for purposes of this sale. As such, the Covid-19 crisis and the balance of payments sensitivities facing all small, open economies like Belize is an important consideration.

10 June 25, 2020 On June 17, 2020, Police Officers lined up to cast their votes for a new Central Board for the Belize Police Association. They voted for good governance, accountability and a complete change in leadership. The election is held annually.

This Association’s Central Board represents over two thousand (2000) Constables, Corporals and Sergeant’s country-wide to ensure that issues of welfare and efficiency are brought to the attention of the Commissioner and try to propose viable solutions to issues which can range from transportation, lodging, proper working facilities among others.

The new President for the first time is a woman. W. Sergeant Jane Usher, who has been a serving member of the Police Department for over 14 years, joined because of her passion to serve her country, to help uplift the Police department, and also a special interest in criminal investigating.

The new Vice President is Sergeant Jermaine Hyde, who has also been a serving member of the Belize Police Department for over 14 years. He said quite candidly that at first he was just looking for a job but, this job has turned into a passion with no regrets about his journey.

W. Sergeant Usher along with Sergeant Jermaine Hyde were the two who received the highest amount of votes in the elections.

Other than that he missed saying that education is in a terrible state As usual Faber was drenched with ignorance. He totally forgot he was Minister of the Education of our Children and Youth. He spent Monday June 8 putting in airtime which he smirked off. He obviously was doing his best to pitch a perfect press conference at the expense of our children and Belizean Children’s essential education.

It was a cheap briefing where all we heard was cut this, cut that and NO plan as to how my children will be safe in the classroom on August 10. Children and teachers do not want to be in the classroom yet. They were locked down since March and just when they are free, bam they are set into a possibly dangerous setting.

Patrick Faber are you telling the teachers, all levels, and parents that their hard work was a failure? That would be the only reason that would fit for reopening so early like a loose cannon.

Faber showed that he is technologically not adroit. I am not saying he is a nincompoop but he needs to learn how to read a basic uniform resource locator(URL). This might seem petty but in 2020 we cannot have someone who doesn’t know this and be the leader of

education in the era when technology in the classroom is a no-brainer to most. It seems that Digi Learn has flown over his head. Faber kept saying his staff has worked hard, of that there is no doubt. But the leader MUST work harder than them for it to be fair and to function better.

Faber qualified the items he presented as the tip of the iceberg. Apart from missing his IT classes, he also missed Literature and English. If he presented the tip of the State of Education then the rest is horrendous. Education in Belize can be expected to sink ala Titanic. Expect to have worse revelations about Education since Faber didn’t have the intestinal fortitude to tell us all the truth. Most likely he cannot see all the panorama. Faber normally is short sighed and now he is blinded by a convention. The Education of our children is lost in his other exigencies.

After all the total truth would dampen his real goal—Leadership aspirations to the overall hotbed of corruption.

We would rather that the Minister of Education be engaging with the person that is poised to succeed him. As the people chose their new government, it is obvious that the UDP should be thinking of handing over. If they care for Belize this sacred choice, elections, should come as quickly as possible for the sake of our children and the Belize they own for their foreseeable future.

Jose Abelardo Mai for Orange Walk South Orange Walk South’s Champion Jose Abelardo Mai has been the Area Representative in Orange Walk South since 2012 and continues to be elected by the people because he is one of them, and because he champions their cause.

He is a tireless worker, and because he is always on the ground in the communities under his watch, he understands what the people need to be able to live productive, meaningful lives, able to sustain their livelihoods and their families. Abi graduated from the Orange Walk Technical High School, and then went on to the Belize College of Agriculture where he received an Associate Degree in Applied Science, majoring in Agriculture. He then attended Tuskegee University, where he attained his Bachelor’s Degree in Plant and Soil Science from the College of Agriculture, with honours. While there, he was selected to be a research assistant at the Carver Research Foundation, studying sweet potatoes for use by NASA astronauts in space. His love and passion for agriculture spawned a career in that area, and he returned to Orange Walk where he worked various posts in the private and public sector sector, including Agriculture Extension Officer, Principal Agricultural Officer, Director of Extension, Marketing and Agro-Processing and Marketing Officer.

Abi has served his people and Party with distinction, and in addition to working in the Orange Walk South constituency since 2006, has also served as Director of Communication for the Northern Region, Chairman of the Northern Caucus and Deputy Party Leader for the North. He currently acts as the shadow Minister for Agriculture.

He has been a tireless worker for the residents of Orange Walk South and is also a believer in the critical importance of food security for the nation. Whenever there is an issue facing the farmers, whether it be onions rotting in the fields because of the importation of foreign onions, or crops destroyed because of the short-sightedness of the government, Abi has always been at the forefront, championing the cause of the people. Kareem Musa for Caribbean Shores A Burning Fire in Caribbean Shores Kareem Musa is the voice of the voiceless, the man who is never afraid to stand with his people against all challenges, and never hesitates to get down and dirty to ensure that the needs of his people are met, and that they are represented well. His work ethic, humility and passion for service have earned him the love and respect of the people of Caribbean Shores.

Kareem attended primary school at St. Joseph’s Primary School in Belize City and was an avid tennis player winning several titles including the National Boys under 14 and under 18 championships. He graduated from St. John’s High School and St. John’s College Sixth Form. He then attended university in the United States and graduated from Louisiana State University (LSU) with a degree in Sociology with emphasis on Criminology. He attended Law School at the University of the West Indies (Barbados) and Norman Manley Law School (Jamaica). He graduated from Norman Manley Law School with Honors and immediately took up practice in criminal, civil, corporate and real estate law at the Law Firm of Musa & Balderamos.

From a very young age, Kareem was interested in the justice system and representing those who were less fortunate. Active in politics since 1996, he decided to throw his hat in the ring in 2014, and in 2015 pulled off an incredible win in that division. He has never stopped serving the people or his Party and became the Deputy Leader of the East shortly after his victory in 2015. He currently serves as a shadow Minister for the Attorney-General’s Ministry and Public Utilities.

Kareem is an avid sportsman and believes in using sports as a positive channel for the youth and young adults in the community. He believes in and will always fight for equal opportunities for his people – to education, health, housing and employment. Paul Thompson for Alberts New Life in the Alberts Paul Thompson has worked in the Albert Constituency for more than twenty years.

He knows the people of the division because he has been on the ground with them. He is a vibrant, dynamic politician and an avid sportsman who will bring that energy and focus to work in uplifting the people and creating new opportunities for them.

Paul graduated from St. John’s College Sixth Form and went on to attend the University of North Florida where he attained a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with emphasis on Marketing. He is currently the President of the Belize Basketball Federation, (BBF), a post he has held for eleven years. During his tenure as President of the BBF he has seen the development and evolution of basketball with the formation of an Elite Basketball League being one of the major accomplishments. He also led the BBF in defending its constitution at the court of arbitration in Switzerland.

In his capacity as President of the BBF, Paul was elected as Vice President of the Confederation of Central American Basketball (COCABA) for two terms—2014-2018 and 2018-2022. He was also appointed and currently serves as a member of FIBA Americas Youth Committee.

He served his people and the PUP as the standard bearer for the Albert division in the 2015 national elections and remains the standard bearer for the 2020 elections. Paul also represented the interests of all Belizeans as a Senator for three years—2016-2019. He now serves on the National Executive of the People’s United Party as the liaison officer with the social partners. In 2018, he served as the Campaign Manager for the Belize City Council elections which brought the PUP back in office after 15 years.

Cordel Hyde for Lake Independence The People’s Champion in Lake I Cordel Hyde is a dynamic, plain-spoken man who can represent his constituents at the highest levels of office, because he works with them on the ground. He understands the poverty and neglect that have kept the people living in mental slavery. He knows what is needed to uplift them, and to empower them. He is the people’s champion in Lake Independence.

Cordel graduated from St. John’s College and St. John’s College Sixth Form, and went on to attend Jesuit University in New York, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in English Communications. He returned to Belize armed with that degree and a passion to help his people and entered politics a few weeks after.

Just months after, he defeated a former Minister of government for chairmanship of the PUP Lake Independence branch committee, and there started what appeared an unlikely journey, for the “little barefooted boy” from Sarstoon Street.

He went on to become the PUP standard-bearer of the division, in another contested convention in 1996, and in 1998 he became Minister of Education at the age of 25.

During the two PUP terms of 1998-2008, he also served alternately as a Minister of Housing, Youth, Sports, Transport and Defence. Between 2008 and late 2011, Hyde served as a deputy leader and later as a senior deputy leader of the PUP. He would leave politics in 2012 after his son was diagnosed with a deadly cancer in New York. His son died eight months later, and Hyde returned to Belize to work as a consultant at Kremandala, his family’s media business. In 2014 he returned to politics, and in November of 2015, he won his seat for a fourth time. Today, Hyde is the PUP deputy leader and the Lake Independence area representative.

His passion for social justice, his humility and determination to serve his people, make him the only choice in Lake Independence.

Alex Balona for Cayo Central Real Representation in Cayo Central Alex Balona is a young, dynamic warrior when it comes to representing his people. He will always stand with them and will always fight to ensure that they are given equal opportunities. In Cayo Central, the people have been abandoned while only a few benefit. A few get very rich, while the majority are left to struggle with the rising cost of living and no access to proper housing, health, education or employment.

Marconi Leal for Belize Rural North New Energy & Real Change in Belize Rural North Marconi Leal is no newcomer to politics and has served the people of Belize Rural North for many years. Marconi attended Pancotto Primary School, after which he went to Nazarene High School in Belize City. He went on to attain a degree in Primary Education from the University of Belize. He went straight into the career that was his calling and taught for twenty years at the Pancotto Primary School.

He is now an entrepreneur, buying and selling vehicles, logging and farming.

Marconi has worked in the area for many years, as Campaign Manager for different Area Representatives and Standard Bearers, serving on the Belize Rural North Executive. He has now decided that he can better serve the people as their Area Representative and has hit the ground running since being endorsed in 2018.

He has recognized that many of the residents of the communities in Belize Rural North lack access to opportunities and basic infrastructure. One of his top priorities will be adequate, affordable housing for residents, so that they can raise their families in an atmosphere which is conducive to their well-being and productivity. He is a family man and is dedicated to ensuring that every family in the constituency has access to quality healthcare and education, as well as electrification in their communities and reliable potable water supply. Julius Espat for Cayo South An Architect of REAL People-Centered Development Julius Espat is a warrior in the People’s United Party, a passionate leader in his division of Cayo South and in the Party where he fights for the good of his residents and for the development of the communities he represents. He was elected by an overwhelming majority in 2012 and 2015 because he is a worker, and a fighter, and gets the job done every time.

Julius went to school at St. John’s College Sixth Form before pursuing further education at the University of San Carlos in Guatemala. He graduated with a Degree in Architecture and immediately returned home to Belize. In 1993 he opened his own business, Strukture Architects which remains one of the foremost architecture firms in the country.

Following his determination to serve his people in a greater capacity, Espat entered politics in 2009 as advisor in the People’s United Party, also acting as the Secretary-General and overseeing the affairs of the Secretariat. He has served as Treasurer and Co-Campaign Manager and is currently the Area Representative of Cayo South, which he won in landslide victories in 2012 and 2015. He is the Regional Deputy Party Leader for the West and serves as the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee.

Julius is committed to stamping out corruption at every level of government, because he believes that it is that corruption which hinders development in his constituency and across the country. He believes in REAL, honest investment, in all residents having access to a fair share of the annual Budget, and in equal access to healthcare, education and meaningful employment.

GOVERNMENT OF BELIZE MINISTRY OF WORKS SEVENTH ROAD (PHILIP GOLDSON HIGHWAY UPGRADING) PROJECT MILE 24.5 - 92 INCLUDING REMATE ROAD BYPASS INVITATION FOR PREQUALIFICATION OF CONTRACTORS The Government of Belize (GOBZ) has applied for financing from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), and the United Kingdom Caribbean Infrastructure Partnership Fund, towards the cost of the Seventh Road (Philip Goldson Highway Upgrading) Project – Mile 24.5 – 92 inclusive of the Remate Road Bypass, and intends to apply a portion of the proceeds to eligible payments under the contracts for which this invitation is issued. Payment by CDB, will be made only at the request of GOBZ and upon approval by CDB, and will be subject, in all respects, to the terms and conditions of the Financing Agreements. The Financing Agreement prohibits a withdrawal from the Project Accounts for the purpose of any payment to persons or entities, or for any import of goods, if such payment or import, to the knowledge of CDB, is prohibited by a decision of the United Nations Security Council taken under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations. No party other than GOBZ shall derive any rights from the Financing Agreement or have any claim to the proceeds of the Financing.

This Project is being implemented by the Ministry of Works (MOW), Project Execution Unit (PEU). A Project Coordinator within PEU is responsible for the day-to-day management of project activities. Engineering Consultants will be retained by MOW to assist with the supervision of the contracts. PEU intends to pre-qualify contractors for the four lots comprising the major works – Lot 1 (Sections A and D), Lot 2 (Section B), Lot 3 (Section C) and Lot 4 (Section E). Descriptions of the Works comprising each Section are provided below. It is expected that Invitations to Bid will be issued in the third quarter of 2020.

Section A – Upgrading of the Philip Goldson Highway from Km 0+000 (Mile 24.5) to Km 44+600 (Orange Walk Town Bypass South Roundabout). Scope of works includes the execution of road safety features and traffic calming measures, and the installation of additional and new drainage structures for improvement of climate resilience. Road safety features includes line marking, road studs, traffic signs, bus lay-bys, rumble strips, pedestrian crossings and other traffic calming measures. Shoulder widening and pavement strengthening utilizing a DBST pavement will also be executed at Carmelita Village, BSI – M1 Junction and at Crooked Tree junction where a new roundabout will also be constructed.

Section B – Upgrading of the Philip Goldson Highway from Km 44+600 (Orange Walk Town Bypass South Roundabout) to Km 81+446 (Remate Bypass Junction South) via OWT Bypass. Scope of works includes complete shoulder widening, pavement strengthening utilizing DBST pavement. Traffic calming measures in all villages along this route will be implemented, which includes pedestrian/bicycle paths, pedestrian crossings and rumble strips. Other road safety features such as Line Markings, Road Studs and Traffic Signs will also be included. New Drainage Structures for the highway as well as side roads and driveways are also included to improve the climate resilience of the highway.

Section C - Remate Road Bypass (18.4Km) Upgrading of the Philip Goldson Highway (Remate Road Bypass) from Km 0+000 (Remate Bypass Junction South)to Km 18+400 (Remate Bypass Junction North) including the upgrading of the Remate Road Intersections (North & South Junctions) with the Philip Goldson Highway with two new roundabouts. The existing gravel road will be upgraded to a paved international standard using DBST pavement, as well as the installation of drainage structures and road safety features.

Section D - Upgrading of the Phillip Goldson Highway from Km 99+760 (Remate Bypass Junction North) to Km 104+198 (Santa Elena Border). Scope of works includes complete shoulder widening, pavement strengthening utilizing DBST pavement. Traffic calming measures in all villages along this route will be implemented, which includes pedestrian/bicycle paths, pedestrian crossings and rumble strips. Other road safety features such as Line Markings, Road Studs and Traffic Signs will also be included. New Drainage Structures for the highway as well as side roads and driveways are also included to improve the climate resilience of the highway.

Section E - Upgrading of the Phillip Goldson Highway from Km 0+000 (Remate Road Bypass South) via Corozal Town to Km 23+590 (Remate Road Bypass Junction North). Traffic calming measures in all villages along this route will be implemented, which includes pedestrian/bicycle paths, pedestrian crossings and rumble strips. Other road safety features such as Line Markings, Road Studs and Traffic Signs will also be included. New Drainage Structures for the highway as well as side roads and driveways are also included to improve the climate resilience of the highway.

Firms whether applying individually or in the form of a Joint Venture, shall: (a) be legally incorporated or otherwise organised in, and have their principal place of business in, an Eligible Country; (b) be more than fifty (50) percent beneficially-owned by a citizen or citizens and/or a bona fide resident or residents of an Eligible Country, or by a body corporate or bodies meeting these requirements, as far as the ownership can be reasonably determined; and (c) shall have no arrangement and undertake not to make any arrangement whereby the majority of the financial benefits of the contract, i.e. more than fifty (50) percent of the value of the contract, will accrue or be paid to sub-contractors, sub-suppliers or sub-consultants that are not from an Eligible Country.

The sealed envelope containing each submission must include the name and address of the applicant and be clearly marked “Application to Prequalify for the Seventh Road (Philip Goldson Highway Upgrading) Project” followed by a list of the relevant Lots.

GOBZ reserves the right to accept or reject late applications or to cancel the prequalification process. GOBZ will not be bound to assign any reason for not pre-qualifying any applicant and will not defray costs incurred by applicants in the preparation and submission of the pre-qualification documents.

The Auditor General of our country, who by the way is considered a heroin for standing up to the powerful and vindictive Prime Minister, is also a heroin or sheroin for the stalwart work she has been doing.

As Auditor General it is her job and that of her staff to check up on all Ministers and public officers regarding proper use of public monies. The Auditor General and her staff uncovered a scheme that points to corruption of a Minister of government named Herman Longsworth.

Mr. Longsworth (we can’t say honourable because what he did is dishonourable) while he was Minister of Sports took public monies which were to be spent at the National Stadium or Marion Jones Stadium and put the monies in his personal bank account which he controlled.

He then took out the money from the account and it was never used for the stadium.

The Auditor General obtained all the relevant documents, proof of the money being moved, proof it went into a bank account controlled by Mr. Longsworth, proof that the money was taken out by Mr. Longsworth and proof that the money was never used at the stadium.

Under the laws of Belize the Director of Public Prosecutions should have requested copies of the documents and investigations done by the Auditor General’s staff. If the documents are true, she should then issue written instructions to the Police to arrest and charge Mr. Longsworth for at least four serious charges, That never happened and most likely never will.

Instead the Prime Minister of our country who is also the Minister of Finance should have requested the Director of Public Prosecutions to do what the law requires her to do.

After all, it is the Prime Minister’s duty to protect public monies. Unfortunately the Prime Minister doesn’t quite have a good name in our country. Apart from all the tales of wrongdoing, waste and thieving that is going on in this government, he is publicly being fingered as the Prime Minister who cuddles corruption.

What an epitaph, what a legacy.

And that is the least of the horrible, dirty things that our Prime Minister is accused of, terrible low down allegations.

So the Prime Minister mentioned that the police will investigate Mr. Longsworth.

Now we all know how effective and successful the police are when it comes to chancing poor people, beating and wrongfully locking up poor people and so on and so forth. But we also know they cannot investigate the big time crooks and politicians who are raping our country.

There are somethings the police can do and there are somethings the police cannot do.

Mr. Herman Longsworth will never be properly investigated. And you can safely bet your little social assistance and groceries that Mr. Longsworth will never be arrested and charged for stealing public monies.

Ain’t gonna happen.

LIKEWISE FOR JOHN SALDIVAR John Saldivar could have been the next Leader of the United Democratic Party. For a day or two he was actually just that, but then had to resign in disgrace.

He is accused of accepting 25 thousand US dollars on a monthly basis from a dude in the USA who turned out to be a convicted crook.

Mr. Saldivar broke several laws by accepting the monies. The FIU or Financial Intelligence Unit were unable to apply a little bit of intelligence.

Like the three little monkeys they see no wrongs, hear no wrongs and know about no wrong doings.

FIU is efficient in seizing small monies from poor people, especially fishermen and small time weed sellers, but when it comes to the cocaine cowboys, money launderers, crooked politicians and bloated contracts sky pirates. They are busy attending US sponsored conferences.

You’ll smile, but we have to say. John Saldivar is under investigation.

Yes, guess who, the Prime Minister told the Belizean people that the po-

lice will investigate Saldivar.

Baby it ain’t going to happen. What investigation? Saldivar confessed publicly he was taking the money. The information was made public in a court in USA. All that’s needed is for -yes- the Director of Public Prosecutions or Director of the FIU to write the District Attorney and get copies of the court trial. Court trials in the USA like in Belize are public matters.

What is said in courts are public information that anyone is entitled to maintain.

What investigation?

Saldivar is once again running in a UDP convention to replace the ailing and washed up Prime Minister post and thus leader of the UDP. You can bet your little Brads boledo money that Mr. Saldivar will never be arrested, will never be charged and will never be taken to any court.

Ain’ gonna happen. Not under the UDP. THE MEDIA LET US DOWN We want to write a well thought out piece about how the Belize television has let down Belize and thereby inadvertently condemned future generations to a wretched future overflowing with crime and poverty.

The media gone through the covid lock-down and just baffu their way doing the same old same old.

Nothing informative or inspiring on the back yard gardening, or fishing. Nothing to encourage new farmers to take to agriculture.

Nothing about how to make jams and jellies from our abundance of fruits.

Nothing on a weekly if not daily basis on replacing imported foods and drinks with our own cancer free, healthy local produce.

No encouragement to open books so our young generation can open their minds.

Except for Channel 5, no productions or promotions sponsoring singing, dancing and storytelling.

It’s a real sad situation.

Really sad.

NEW PORTS COMMISSION It was a revelation that the Port Commissioner, politically appointed almost a decade ago is still in port, or is it starboard?

This is just not fair to young, highly educated Belizeans or to trained, experienced career citizens.

CONDOLENCES Our condolences to the family of Evan X Hyde, Christine, Ronald, Charles and other siblings as well as Charles Bartlett Hyde on the loss of his wife Eleanor Belisle Hyde.

Charles Bartlett Hyde was the former Postmaster General, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chairman of the Public Services Commission and Chairman of the National Sports Council but most of all he was and is a warm, genuine human being and so was his wonderful wife Mrs. Eleanor Hyde.

WARNING There is a spike in Europe and in the USA with the numbers of persons getting infected with Covid-19.

Most of the countries which opened up, or dropped their vigilance and opened their borders are regretting it.

Billy White is the village in Cayo Northeast most prone to flooding. Almost any hard rain will potentially put people and property at risk. Four and one half years requesting assistance from GOB and NEMO. None ever came.

We get by with the little we have and at times with the help from some friends. I want to thank Isaac Friesen for assisting in clearing a clogged culvert and excavating a drain so water on the center road could move out and make the road passable. Thanks also to operator Mr Dueck for his ability to manuever the big machine to do the work./// Of Flooding, Infrastructure and Cause and Effect I am certainly not here to cast blame on one single causative action or inaction but we have to reflect on what could have been done with the limited resources and how we can ameliorate the destructive effects of natural and man-made disasters.

1. We certainly need to curb some of our destructive agricultural practices (Elimination of the Riparian forests, desertification), mining of river and river banks, changing the course of streams and creeks without proper Infrastructure in agriculture practices and during road construction.

2. On the other side of things we need to spend our money by prioritizing our needs and spend it effectively and efficiently.

While we have been giving much attention to the main highways, and it is deservingly so for all the right reasons, we cannot forget the effects on communities and villages that suffer year after year with no response and attention from the Government. Today we see the thousands of pictures and videos from these affected communities and their people. It also exposes some of the inhumane living conditions of our people. If only we could have spent some of the 500 plus millions from Petro Caribe or the 700 plus millions from the Petroleum industry wisely.

Note that apart from Capital 2 spending GOB has spent from Capital 3 loans on road rehabilitation.

But Alas! Priority and proper evaluation and supervision have been missing.

Oscar Mira, Belmopan Mira is about the people of Belmopan. It is time for a fresh start in Belmopan. New government and new representation.

(The Whip) Houses by Maya Mopan was under water. The amount of water is too much for the drainage system. There is an engineering department that should be looking at these things. There is a bridge on the George Price Highway that has cut off the west of the country.

I had plenty of calls this morning that many people and their homes are flooded. We are about to open a shelter at the Family of God Church for families that have been displaced by the rising water./// #TeamMira Hon. Julius Espat, Cayo South I would like to congratulate the competent Engineers at the Ministry of Works to come up with a fast temporary solution to this recent catastrophe in Cayo South. The policy makers cannot continue building roads that lead to nowhere, and abandon the maintenance of our main highways. A new Government will need to address all these pressing issues for and on behalf of the people of Belize (The Whip) It’s happening again. It is a difficult situation for us. Cayo South has long been clamouring for basic infrastructure to live in a time like this. Priorities are not in place. They (the UDP government) does not clean the rivers and nothing to help. We need to alert the Ministers in charge like Castro. We have to do what we have to do to help the people.

All the white elephant projects out there were worth millions of dollars; these are of no help.

It suddenly became a river by St. Matthews in Cayo South.

It is a sad situation when compounded with the last flood a few days before and Covid-19. People were being displaced simple due to UDP greed and incompetence.

It is great to listen to the concerns of those who turn the economic wheel. Those who employ the masses and those who provide food for the nation.

(The Whip) Whenever Cayo South rains the next to follow is Stann Creek West. There can be major flooding in our area. We have requested that our drains be cleared. When the PUP wins we will concentrate in our communities so that flood do not happen./// I never realize our health care workers are taking such a ‘licking.’ They no longer provide food and toilet paper for them at work.

Getting messages from around the country the health care workers are drained and frustrated and if they complain they received treats that they will be sent home. They have them working late hours and with no transportation home. At the Belmopan hospital they work in fear. They are reminded that they need a job especially at this time very sad these people are professionals. There is breakdown in the system. The people can only take so much.

Time to change the Government they will be going around making all the offers and after they win nothing is done for rural areas.

We haven’t been posting everyday about the work. But, we are still serving the residents of Mesopotamia, and they extend much gratitude!

While most of those who are in need now stop by the kitchen to pickup a hot meal, we continue to deliver food to the elderly who are immobile, and we continue to serve the tenants at the Raymond Park’s Night Shelter.

Until we can indeed create a country and society that works for everyone, my team and I will continue to make our contribution, however small, towards our collective progress.

Dear Editor, Please allow some space to put out my opinion, Washing of Hands and Washing of Feet: Leadership Crisis: From my very narrow scope of regional history, spring a number of highly regarded and some universally recognized leaders that were able to forge through immense challenges, to achieve some aspect of liberation for the people.

To our north in Mexico, we have Benito Juárez and further north in the USA, we have Martin Luther King, Jr., in Guatemala, we have Tecún Umán and in South America, we have Simón Bolívar, to the east, we have Cuban José Martí and of course el comandante Fidel Castro.

This year, Belize will celebrate 39 years of Independence, made possible given the vision and bravery of our own hero, George Cadle Price. It took years of detoxification before I could begin to appreciate the greatness and stature of the man that leads Belize towards independence. Every hero, real or otherwise like Superman, has a nemesis. The kind of opponent whose sole purpose is to undermine and sabotage the hero’s work.

Pontius Pilate, in an attempt to absolve himself from the guilt of murder, washed his hands publicly. The failure of people in a democratic society to fight against injustice may be intrinsically tied to our own collusion with murder. I am in some degree guilty.

Is the vision of independence evolving to us becoming that Land of the Free? It appears to me, that for some time now we lost our way. Am I free to speak out and to shout how painful it is to live in a violent, oppressive and corrupt society? Are we to accept that this is all Belize can be?

Forgiveness is a powerful medicine. Capable of transforming the essence of our human condition. Change starts with each of us. Humility is a common quality found among good leaders. A good leader is capable of washing feet—strange! Good leaders come only once in a while and leave an indelible positive mark that stands for a long time.

Are we truly incapable of creating a better Belize? One that thirst and hunger, not for food, but for justice. What do you think?

Dear Editor For some time now farmers have suffered at hands of the very vindictive UDP in La Gracia, Cayo. Your readers may recall the ongoing land issues at La Gracia Village in Cayo. Over 40 farmers have been affected by the hands of the vindictive area representative. In 2019, our farmers noticed that a private surveyor was entering their agricultural lands. Our farmers say that they have worked on these lands for over 25 years and have invested time and money.

The farmers now claim that the UDP took away their land to serve as a private farm for a certain politician. In addition to this, the politician has installed 2 illegal checkpoints inside of the village with armed men.

Villagers attest to seeing government equipment and machinery working inside of the land. There is also a government vehicle that takes about 20 to 25 workers that are on the government payroll daily to the farm. The independent media can come and see this anytime and at the right time.

The worker vehicle usually take off the gob license plates and travel without license plates when traveling to carry out private work for the abnormal politician. Where is the accountant general? Can the government account to Belizeans on how the public’s money is being used to service private equipment, private workers, and fuel to fatten the pockets of this abnormal politician?

Besides having no regard for the farmers that work from dawn to night to farm their lands and take care of their families, this politician continues to abuse of government resources and money. The villagers of La Gracia and the people of Cayo Central demand answers from the government who should be making their lives better not worse!

Dear Editor, What the hell is happening in Belize?

Are we bankrupt?

I have been with Scotia Bank for many, many years now and do not like any other Bank. I know that the differences are not much but I have a personal like.

Anyway… what happens to my money now at Scotia? I know they have been reaching out to me. But now for all intents Scotia is no more.

Is Belize in trouble as a country? Today I see the PM on a press conference and tomorrow Friday at the House. But I do not believe him anymore. Doesn’t he get it?

It is dangerous for him to stay on as people do not follow what he says. The success of the past group he had was because Johnny Briceño was a part, but now he is gone.

This Covid really is hitting me.

I have been seeing my bills still there and my life savings disappearing.

I hope the new Bank will be to my liking. I grieve for myself.

I write to you to help me see if there are more people out there with the same concerns. I hope this is put online so that people can comment.

REGISTER TO VOTE

IF NEEDED, Transfer your Vote to another Constituency to VOTE PUP “He is Scoundrel enough to have me voting” This is a comment seen on social media following John Saldivar’s launch of his leadership campaign in the latter months of 2019. Now in Summer of very late June 2020 and in the middle of a pandemic from which God is sparing us of we are looking at a choice of direction—a giant choice of a lifetime. Do you want to continue with the UDP’s campaign of terror or do you want the Hope and the vision for a real Belize that will soon be working for everyone?

“Scoundrel” now sounds prophetic as the scoundrel has been risen and slammed back down to earth all within 72 hours in what is definitely among the quickest leadership debacles in history.

Apologies for even calling it a leadership… It was infamy at its UDP most. It was more abominable than surprising. It is only ONE of the may reason Belize cannot afford one more day under the UDP. Belize gets poorer by the minute with the UDP new version of 1998’s ‘five year dah five years.’

It might not be the best of positive reasons but every day gives rise to a new realization that voting the UDP out and voting in the visionary PUP is utmost importance to Belize. A peaceful life devoid of political interference begins with the political move of voting for the right leaders. Sunday July 12 is a new date on the timeline for the

UDP’s halls of infamy and is a good example of what is NOT for Belize.

When deciding to vote making that important first move is most often the most difficult.

Going to REGISTER If you have never voted before and feel the urgency of the moment to save our Belize, that urgency should lead you to register so that you can get a chance to mark your dissatisfaction with the present UDP government. In Belize, we register that dissatisfaction by voting on Election Day…and then holding those you vote for accountable. Do not lose touch with your government.

If you are all over Belize at your work, commuting in a bus, eating at a restaurant, riding a taxi, strolling through social media and feeling that you are ignored by the UDP, REGISTER. If, you don’t have a job, REGISTER. If, you don’t have a piece of land to your name whilst others seem to get, REGISTER. If, you hate living from pay check to smaller pay check, REGISTER. Were you mistreated at your hospital, if you even have one, REGISTER. If you are anxious about your child or yourself completing your education, REGISTER. Ask yourself, who are you voting for in the upcoming General election to be called shortly in this 2020? Not the UDP….

Wait...are you even registered to vote? If not, REGISTER. If you are not registered, all that fury will be of no consequence. You must place your ONE sacred vote for Belize.

Call your unregistered friend to prepare...REGISTER and vote.

Belize is counting on everyone to vote the UDP out. Go REGISTER NOW. Find you nearest PUP office and they will be willing to help.

These values remain true today and form a part of our PUP Creed. We are committed to the protection of our territorial sovereignty. We cannot, and will not risk even an inch of our beloved country, from the Rio Hondo to the Sarstoon. The PUP will always seek to achieve social, economic and environmental justice. It is a commitment to the socio-economic improvement of all Belizeans. Our plan is to rid Belize of poverty. To the PUP, poverty is an ugly scar on our nation’s collective conscience, and no amount of cosmetic surgery can paste over the suffering of close to half of our people, most of them women and children, who live on less than ten dollars per day.

This is not only a task for governments. We all have a stake in this enterprise, but government must LEAD and bold leaders must show that they truly care. For us the task ahead is clear - to build a Belize that works for everyone, so that every Belizean should come to expect five things. This vision, this determination, has created what we call our BELIZEAN BILL OF RIGHTS. FIRST - Every Belizean should have access to a piece of land. With land we immediately create opportunities for upliftment and personal growth.

SECOND - Every Belizean should be able to own a decent home. The 17th Century Jurist and politician Edward Coke in speaking on human rights said: “A man’s home is his castle.” Every Belizean in 2020 should expect such an entitlement whether they live on Bocotora Street or on Seashore Drive.

THIRD - Every Belizean should be given the chance to go to school from pre-school to junior college. We have to make education free from pre-kinder to Junior College. If we will give our young people a chance at success, it must start with a good education.

FOURTH – Accessibility to quality basic health care is critical, which means every Belizean should be enrolled in the National Health Insurance Program. If we can invest 42 million dollars in a basketball stadium, then we should be able to provide basic health services to all.

FIFTH and most important, the driving force behind it all is JOBS - good jobs that can lead to meaningful careers; jobs that will give Belizeans a chance for personal growth and prosperity and provide a hand up for those at the very bottom of the economic ladder.

If we do these things, if we create a fair and just society, if we build on these principles we will then be able to change people’s lives and together we will rid our shores of the scourge that is poverty.

Massive Saharan Dust Plume Now in the Caribbean Sea to Complete 5,000-Mile Journey From Africa to U.S. This Week

The dust is the thickest to move over the Caribbean Sea region in decades. It is forecast to complete a 5,000-mile journey to the U.S. Gulf Coast later this week. This Saharan air layer generally hampers tropical cyclone development. The dust-laden air also produces spectacular sunrises and sunsets.

June 22 - A massive plume of dust from the Sahara Desert is the thickest in decades to reach the Caribbean Sea, and some of the dust is expected to move into the Gulf of Mexico and parts of the United States later this week. Known as the Saharan Air Layer (SAL), this dry dust plume commonly forms from late spring through early fall and moves into the tropical Atlantic Ocean every

three to five days, according to NOAA’s Hurricane Research Division (HRD).

The densest plume began to emerge off western Africa last weekend and has now traveled over 3,000 miles across the

Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean Sea, covering an area larger than the contiguous United States and western Europe.

Saharan dust tracks as far west as the Caribbean Sea, Florida and the Gulf of Mexico each year – a 5,000-mile-long journey. This particular dust event is unique because of its thickness over the Caribbean Sea. It has the highest concentrations of dust particles observed that region in at least the last 50 to 60 years, according to Dr. Olga Mayol of the Institute for Tropical Ecosystem Studies at the University of Puerto Rico.

The Saharan dust plume is forecast to continue plowing westward through the Caribbean Sea, then reach parts of the Gulf Coast and Deep South later this week.

OECS: Cuban medical brigade shouldn’t be compared to human trafficking

By Dionne Baptiste, loopslu. com June 21, 2020 - The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States has rubbished claims that the services provided by the Cuban Medical Brigade are anything other than humanitarian efforts to offer assistance to countries in time of crisis.

This follows statements by United States Republican Senator Rick Scott that classified Cuba’s humanitarian assistance as human trafficking.

Last week Scott introduced a bill which seeks to extend punitive measures against countries that hire Cuban doctors through the medical mission which is controlled by the government of the island.

He accused the Cuban government of participating in the human trafficking of doctors.

The Cut Profits to the Cuban Regime Act seeks to have the State Department publish a list of countries that contract doctors through the Cuban government.

According to Scott, this will influence their ranking in the State Department’s annual Trafficking in Persons Report.

In a statement dated Sunday, June 21, the OECS said the provision of specialised healthcare through the Henry Reeve Medical Brigades has not only augmented the scarce medical resources of OECS Member States but has provided assurance to the general population of the region’s capacity to fight and manage COVID-19.

“Cuba’s support to the health sector in the Caribbean has a long and exemplary history that has benefitted numerous Caribbean citizens.

One noted invaluable assistance to the region is “Operation Milagro” – a programme which provides free eye medical treatment to OECS nationals requiring interventions to prevent blindness or to restore vision. These conditions include cataract, diabetic retinopathy and other reversible types of visual impairment. The OECS acknowledges with gratitude the extensive global contributions of Cuba, particularly in the fields of health and disaster management, this in spite of

its material limitations and the economic hardships resulting from the US imposed sanctions.”

According to the OECS 473 Cuban medical personnel are working alongside their Caribbean counterparts in eight countries to assist in managing the spread of COVID-19.

The world enters this next phase of the pandemic amid some debate over how best to handle it: As Ahmed Mushfiq Mobarak and Zachary Barnett-Howell argued in Foreign Policy in April, lockdowns may be a bad idea for poor countries, as their younger populations are less vulnerable to the virus, while economic shutdowns would cause untold harm and possible starvation, given the precariousness of income and the prevalence of informal work.

Major quake of 7.4 magnitude hits southern Mexico, shakes capital By reuters.com MEXICO CITY, June 23 (Reuters) - A powerful earthquake hit the coast of southern Mexico on Tuesday, shaking buildings in Mexico City hundreds of miles away, sending people fleeing their homes into the streets, and triggering a tsunami warning.

There were no immediate reports of casualties from the quake, which the U.S. Geological Survey measured at magnitude 7.4. It was centered on the Pacific coast in the state of Oaxaca.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said there were no preliminary reports of damage but added that he was still awaiting reports from Oaxaca, a mountainous state that is home to coffee plantations, beach resorts, and Spanish colonial architecture.

Alberto Ibanez, a photographer in Oaxaca City, told Reuters the quake left a crack in an internal wall in his apartment and knocked books and pots off shelves.

Quakes of magnitudes over 7 are major earthquakes capable of widespread, heavy damage. A 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck central Mexico in 2017 killed 355 people in the capital and the surrounding states.

Tuesday’s quake set off a tsunami warning for a radius of 1,000 km (621 miles) on the Pacific coasts of Mexico and Central America, including Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.

The USGS said the epicenter of Tuesday’s quake was located 69 km (43 miles) northeast of the town of Pochutla. It was very shallow, only 26 km (16 miles) below the earth’s surface, which would have amplified the shaking.

Situated at the intersection of three tectonic plates, Mexico is one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries. The capital is seen as particularly vulnerable due to its location on top of an ancient lake bed.

(CNN)These are very difficult days, as the world faces one of its worst challenges ever: the novel coronavirus pandemic. And it seems almost no nation is spared. As infection rates rise, so does panic across financial markets, as economies drastically slow down and supply chains are severely disrupted.

Extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures. As such, it can no longer be business as usual.

Each day, the situation evolves and requires constant reviews of precautionary measures and strategies. In the midst of all this, we must all worry about the ability of every nation to respond to this crisis. And we must ensure that developing nations are prepared to navigate these uncharted waters fully.

In the face of this pandemic, we must put lives above resources and health above debt. Why? Because developing economies are the most vulnerable at this time. Our remedies must go beyond simply lending more. We must go the extra mile and provide countries with much-needed and urgent financial relief -and that includes developing countries under sanctions.

According to the independent, global think tank ODI in its report on the impact of economic sanctions, for decades, sanctions have decimated investments in public health care systems in quite a number of countries.

Today, the already stretched systems as noted in the 2019 Global Health Security Index will find it difficult to face up to a clear and present danger that now threatens our collective existence.

Only those that are alive can pay back debts.

Sanctions work against economies but not against the virus. If countries that are under sanctions are unable to respond and provide critical care for their citizens or protect them, then the virus will soon “sanction” the world.

In my Yoruba language, there is a saying. “Be careful when you throw stones in the open market. It may hit a member of your family.”

That’s why I also strongly support the call by the UN Secretary-General that debts of low-income countries be suspended in these fast-moving and uncertain times.

But I call for even bolder actions, and there are several reasons for doing so.

First, the economies of developing countries, despite years of great progress, remain extremely fragile and ill-equipped to deal with this pandemic. They are more likely to be buried with the heavy fiscal pressure they now face with the coronavirus. … while rich countries have resources to spare, evidenced by trillions of dollars in fiscal stimulus, developing countries are hampered with bare-bones resources. …There is no coronavirus for developed countries and a coronavirus for developing and debt-stressed countries. We are all in this together.

But more support will be needed. Let’s lift all sanctions, for now. Even in wartime, ceasefires are called for humanitarian reasons. In such situations, there is a time to pause for relief materials to reach affected populations.

The novel coronavirus is a war against all of us. All lives matter.

For this reason, we must avoid fiscal distancing at this time. A stitch in time will save nine.

Social distancing is imperative now. Fiscal distancing is not.

The Worst Coronavirus Outbreak Will Hit This City, Doctor Warns

And, according to one world-renowned infectious disease expert, it could be one of the biggest COVID-19 warzones in the world.

“If we continue on the same trajectory, my worry is Houston could become the worst affected city right now in North America,” infectious disease expert Peter Hotez, MD, Dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, told CNN affiliate KPRC-2. He is worried that Houston and its encompassing Harris County will soon reign as the coronavirus capital of the country.

During a press conference on Monday, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner reported an additional 1,789 coronavirus cases in Houston, bringing the city’s total to 14,322.

Additionally, Houston police spokesperson Officer Kese Smith also told CNN that at least 103 Houston police officers are currently quarantined with COVID-19. The Houston Health Department also warned that Harris County hospitals have seen a 177% increase in COVID-19 positive patients and a 64% increase in COVID positive patients in ICU beds since May 31. “WE MUST ACT NOW. Wear a mask, social distance & wash hands,” they instructed in

a tweet.

“All of the good work we did collectively in March, April and May— closing down conferences and conventions—we are now engaged in activities that are wiping the success we achieved,” Turner said during the press conference.

Mandate to Wear Your Mask Governmental officials hope that a new mandated mask order, in effect from June 22-28, will help

flatten the curve in Houston. “At the very minimum we are asking people to put on their masks or face coverings,” Turner said.

“I don’t want the city of Houston to end up in a shutdown mode, because our hospitals are being overwhelmed and people are dying,” Turner said. “And that’s what people are seeing all over all over the country.

That’s not what we want in the city of Houston.”
