BARROW’S BIGGEST SCREWUP Ashcroft Submits Another Bill for BTL Thursday, 08 June 2017 On the 28th of June, a couple weeks from today, yet another payment for the seizure of BTL, negotiated in secret in 2015 by Prime Minister Dean Barrow and Michael Ashcroft, will come due. Barrow travelled to Miami where he signed an agreement, allegedly drafted by his own law firm, giving Ashcroft a blank check in return for the matter not going to final judgment by the Caribbean Court of Justice. That blank check amounted to more than a half-a-billion-dollar debt for the Belizean people, guaranteed by Barrow. In the agreement, he even committed to paying half in ten days and half in a year – June 28, 2017.

Of course, the Prime Minister argued that a $557M debt on our backs was exactly what we needed, and it was a great thing, an amazing thing, a “vindication” of

BARROW’S BIGGEST SCREWUP Continued from page 1 his administration’s efforts. Patting himself on the back and beating his chest, Mr. Barrow told us that because of his greatness and brilliance in negotiations, Ashcroft would give Belizeans back 60% of the award in Belize dollars to be used for projects to benefit the Belizean people. We are sure that some of the PM’s more rabid and intellectually challenged followers may have actually believed that to be so.

But what Barrow didn’t tell us was this. In that agreement, which has been criticized as badly drafted by the CCJ, Barrow committed to Ashcroft recovering all his liabilities incurred in fighting over Telemedia from when it was nationalized in 2009. The liabilities were to be deducted from the second payment and paid to Ashcroft in US dollars. Any amount remaining after the deduction was to be paid to Ashcroft who will hold it on trust for projects in Belize and the Caribbean.

The Belize Times has been reliably informed that Ashcroft has submitted liabilities totalling US$74M, which means that what will be available for projects in Belize, if Mr. Ashcroft approves, will be in the region of $250,000.

In September 2015 when Barrow and Ashcroft secretly negotiated the deal, apparently Barrow did not ask Ashcroft what his liabilities were at that time. He simply signed agreeing to pay whatever liabilities Ashcroft presented. He did not insert a clause in the Agreement to limit the amount of the liabilities that Belize would pay.

At some point, Belizeans will have to ask themselves who has benefited the most from the Prime Minister’s arbitrary seizure of a private company, BTL, and from this ongoing litigation-laden ‘battle’ with Michael Ashcroft. At some point, Belizeans must realize that while the Prime Minister boasts that BTL is for us, that is a matter of optics because our ‘ownership’ of the utility certainly does not entitle us to make any decision where it is concerned. And our ‘ownership’ of BTL certainly has not improved our financial conditions in any way. So what does this ‘ownership’ of BTL really mean, expect that as taxpayers we must pay $557M for it? It is like this – the Prime Minister asks us to order lunch from Chon Saan and pay for it, then he walks in, congratulates us for making a great selection, and takes the food over to his table and shares it with his family.

At some point, the Belizean people should want to know why Mr. Barrow has made the decisions he has as regards litigation over BTL, decisions which have benefited only Michael Ashcroft and persons close to the Prime Minister. We should want to know why Mr. Barrow did not find out the amount of the Ashcroft Liabilities before he signed the Agreement? We should want to know why Mr. Barrow, a learned attorney, did he not insist on a limit to the amount of possible liabilities that Government would pay, and why he did not insist on a definition of ‘liabilities’ in the Agreement instead of leaving it open ended allowing Ashcroft to claim whatever he wants? We should want to know why Mr. Barrow agreed that we would pay ALL ASHCROFT’S LIABILITIES? Why were they not shared?

Did Mr. Barrow know how much the liabilities were and kept it secret?

It is time for Belizeans to pay very keen attention to the entire BTL/Barrow/Ashcroft fiasco. Something is not right here, as certain persons, select persons, are laughing all the way to the bank.

POLICE COVER UP SEXUAL ALLEGATIONS AGAINST SENIOR COPS Thursday, 08 June 2017 The Belize Police Department has gone above and beyond to prevent information about sexual assault allegations against senior police officers from getting out. At least three cops from the San Ignacio Police formation, including the Officer Commanding that jurisdiction, Senior Superintendent Richard Rosado are under scrutiny as we go to press today, Thursday June 8.

According to multiple sources, three junior female police officers have come forward with the accusations against their superiors. Such an allegation or report should be investigated by the Department’s Professional Standards Branch (PSB) however, in this case, at least up until Wednesday June 7th, it had not even reached that level because the alleged victims were fearful of officially filing complaints. Sources tell us that one of the WPC’s initially made a verbal report to her superior but that officer is reported to have taken the information straight to Sr. Superintendent Rosado against whom the complaint was made.

It was at this time that two other WPC’s came forward with complaints of their own that they too had been assaulted by two other officers including the cop who was initially advised of the alleged sexual misconduct of Rosado.

The information was first shared on Monday June 5th on social media and since then, it has been difficult to even get the Police Press Office to confirm if the Department is indeed

NO LEADS IN JERSON CARBALLO MURDER Thursday, 08 June 2017 Police are looking for two men who they believe may assist them in the hunt for Jerson Carballo’s killer or killers, but they are still unable to determine a motive at this time. On Wednesday, Asst. Commissioner of Police and Southside Commander Chester Williams revealed that, “Mr. Carballo’s death still has us a bit baffled in the sense that we have not been able to ascertain a motive and the reason for that is because he's not known to the Police either from a gang point of view or for other crimes.”

Carballo had just completed an honest day’s work and was making his way home when he was caught in the crosshairs of the ongoing rivalry between the Peace in the Village bloods and the Back a Lands Crips. Jerson Carballo, 27, was ambushed by an armed assailant. He was shot as many as five times to his head, chest and back.

Sometime after 12 a.m. on Tuesday he took his last breath at the corners of Electric and Lawrence Avenues. His sister, the country’s acclaimed Soca queen Ernestine Carballo, told the Times that she was editing her new album when she received the call of her broth-

er’s demise. She told us that she learned that before coming home he had stopped off to talk to some women on Electric Avenue.

Seconds after saying his goodbyes he was callously murdered.

According to his only sister, she never expected such a call because her brother was not a troubled youth and was not involved in any criminal activity.

She told us that he did not socialize much and was a work to home type of guy. Aside from that he was a regular church-goer. His other relatives and persons in the area have echoed her sentiments. Carballo says she hopes that her brother’s killer is brought to justice and that the community would unite and take a stand against the senseless violence.

This is not the first shooting incident to occur on this street.

In February, Alrick August, 24, an employee at Transparent BPO was also shot but survived.

One week later Jason Cortez, 21, was killed in that same vicinity. Jerson Carballo is the 58th person to be killed since the start of 2017.

He leaves behind 7 brothers and 1 sister. He had no children.

One senior cop in the police-media chat group advised the media to refrain from naming the accused cops and promised information later on. He said he was certain the Commissioner had directed an investigation into the allegations. The problem there though, is that currently implemented is a police media model of communication that shields police officers in high positions from having to face the tough questions from the media. Therefore, when that high ranking officer said he was certain the Commissioner had ordered an investigation, it was clear the Commissioner had not been asked directly about the matter and the media could not do so because we are forced to deal with go-betweens.

Likewise, Superintendent Richard Rosado is not required to speak to the media as he would have been forced to do in times past.

Lo and behold, late on Wednesday afternoon, after relentless follow-up from the media, the Police Public Relations Officer Raphael Martinez stated “no report of such allegations were made” but there was no indication that Superintendent Rosado was even asked if he knew of any report of sexual assault being made. Then, early in the evening we learned from sources that the three female junior officers were taken to Belmopan Police headquarters by senior WPCs to be questioned.

We must point out that this is the second time allegations of this nature are being made publicly against Rosado.

In October 2007, while employed as a professor at Sacred Heart College in San Ignacio, he was accused by his niece of improper behaviour. At the time, OC Rosado was a former inspector of police and we are told he re-joined the ranks of the Police Department due to political intervention. Rosado is known to be a crony of Minister Rene Montero.

BRICEÑO SAYS ITS ALL A SHAM Thursday, 08 June 2017 In the wake of breaking news that despite the boasts and promises of PM Barrow Belizeans will get little or nothing back from Michael Ashcroft for projects in Belize, PUP leader John Briceño came out swinging, calling the entire Barrow/ Ashcroft debacle a sham.

According to Briceño, “I can remember when the Prime Minister was saying that during the negotiations, it was fast and furious; but now we’re finding out that it was fast and furious and foolish and stupid, because any attorney that is worth his salt will tell you that in these negotiations you cap your expenses.”

Briceño is referring to the very curious fact that while signing his secret agreement with Michael Ashcroft in September 2015, PM Barrow granted his friend a blank check where liabilities are concerned, just as he granted him a blank check where the payment for BTL was concerned.

“As many people would tell you, the Prime Minister is considered among the best lawyers in this country; so then how can one of the brightest minds in this country, one of the best lawyers in this country, sign that agreement – that is the million-dollar question that everybody is asking, or maybe the $557M dollar question – why did the Prime Minister sign this agreement? He should have known better. And it leaves you to question if there was any other motive behind this charade that has taken place since 2009 to today present,” stated Briceño to the media this week.

When queried about the pending payment and the astronomical bill for liabilities, PM Barrow had little consolation to offer, stating only that there is more litigation in the future. Belizeans have grown weary of that response, because the government has lost practically every round fought against Ashcroft, and while the bill for taxpayers gets higher and higher, Ashcroft gets richer and richer and Mr. Barrow’s attorneys of choice become millionaires.

ANOTHER DOUBLE HOMICIDE IN COROZAL Thursday, 08 June 2017 The bodies of 32 year-old Zeidy Orozco and her 41-year-old boyfriend, Balthazar Lopez have been found, 6 days after they went missing. The worst fears of their Corozal families and friends have been confirmed; they had been searching all over the district, non-stop, for just over 5 days, hoping and praying that this wouldn’t be the outcome of that search.

Thursday, 08 June 2017 Not even midway through his final term, Prime Minister Dean Barrow has become a paper tiger, a weak leader who has been increasingly unable to control his Cabinet Ministers. As we go to press tonight, there is reliable information that in last week’s Cabinet meeting, a group of Ministers including Beverly Castillo and John Saldivar walked out as Barrow tried to push his endorsement of Faber on them.

But it has gone beyond that, to the point where John Saldivar is openly taunting the Prime Minister and his Deputy Prime Minister on Facebook, for all to see. Just this week, Saldivar posted – “To those who would not do as I’ve done…please allow me to be me while you continue to be you and let my people be my judge and your people be your judge.” Once upon a time, Saldivar would never have dared to take on Barrow in public or private, but he is now unconcerned about repercussions because he knows that Barrow will be gone, sooner rather than later, perhaps even this year.

Saldivar’s reference on Facebook is to his Coast Guard debacle, where he used Coast Guard vessels to transport his Belmopan Bandits team whenever they had games to play on San Pedro. Prime Minister Dean Barrow, while seemingly afraid to openly condemn Saldivar, expressed that he would not have done as Saldivar did, and stated that it would not happen again. His protégée, Saldivar’s nemesis Patrick Faber, was also very quick to distance himself from Faber saying he would never have done something like that (even though he has been known to turn his government vehicle into a watercraft). Elodio Aragon, Faber’s sidekick, was also very quick to point out that as Minister of Police he would never use public re-

vestigated and found the gruesome remains of Orozco and Lopez. The police responded and found them in an advanced state of decomposition. An on-site post-mortem will be conducted today to determine cause of death.

Reports are that Zeidy Orozco left her home in San Andres Village at around 8 p.m. on Thursday. She was to go meet her boyfriend at Machie’s Pool Spot in Corozal Town.

Eyewitnesses say that they saw the couple leave together, and the last confirmed sighting was near the Corozo Blue area.

Neither of them got home that night, and each of their families insist that this is very abnormal behaviour. Orozco is the mother of a young daughter, and her family says that she takes care of her child and her father, and so when they

realized that she didn’t come home, they immediately became concerned.

Lopez was supposed to report to work for a construction that he is in charge of, and when he didn’t show up, his employees began calling him.

His phone went straight to voicemail.

The families say that they immediately went to the police and began making a missing person’s report for both, and later on Friday afternoon, June 2, they were informed that the police found Orozco’s Chevy Prism car. It was located in a very remote area off the road which connects the Corozal villages of Yo Chen and Patchakan. That area is not easily, and when the families got there, they saw that the car was completely destroyed by fire. Someone set it ablaze, and that caused the two families to immediately organize into search parties.

They searched the surrounding areas for the rest of Friday evening, all the way up to today, Wednesday, when their bodies were found.

sources like that. He has to say that, because we understand Faber has promised him control of Home Affairs and Defence once they find a way to boot Saldivar out.

Saldivar, who is the Minister of Defence in charge of the Coast Guard, has been unable to understand why such an action would be considered a conflict of interest at the very least.

He has completely disregarded valid accusation that he misused government resources under his control for private gain, though that misuse has been clear to everybody else. Even when the US expressed its displeasure, since the vessels were donated to the Coast Guard for specific anti-crime efforts, and not as a Bandits watertaxi, Saldivar has refused to accept any responsibility, and maintains that he did nothing wrong.

The Belize Times has been made to understand that there is now open acrimony between warring factions in Cabinet, as John Saldivar has made it clear that he still intends to challenge for leadership. Despite his best efforts, Faber has been unable to shore up the support that he expected, and the hands of the Prime Minister are tied in this instance, since he has become a lame duck with a bad back.

Even before they were found, though, their loved ones already feared the worst. Troy Ferguson, Zeidy Orozco’s brother-in-law, told the press, “There is a little thing in the back of your mind saying after 3 days we are not looking for them alive, but hope is still there that they are somewhere maybe tied up or something like that. We want to always keep hope that they are still alive, but the dark reality is slipping in now because of all the time that has passed already.”

Very worrisome for Police is the fact that Zeidy Orozco and Balthazar Lopez are the second couple to be found dead in Corozal in 6 weeks.

The bodies of 52 year-old Canadian Francesca Matus, and 36 year-old American Drew Tomas DeVoursney were found murdered on May 1. There are some similar elements that the two cases share, which causes Corozal residents to suspect that they may be connected.

Questions to Ministers Would the Member for Queen Square and Prime Minister please confirm or deny reports that only $250,000 of the $557M payment to Ashcroft will come back to Belize to use for projects?

Would the Member for Queen Square and Prime Minister please say how much his law firm was paid in fees for the secret settlement agreement which cost Belizeans $557M? Would the Member for Queen Square and Prime Minister please say who will handle litigation with the Ashcroft Group now, since his brother will no longer do it? Could he confirm or deny reports that his ex-wife Lois Young Barrow is returning to the country to take his brother’s place?

Would the Member for Belmopan and Minister of Defence please confirm or deny reports that he has informed his Executive that he will contest for leadership of the UDP because he does not feel that his colleague in Collet can handle the job?

Would the Member for Collet and Minister of Education please say if he had anything to do with the information about misuse of Coast Guard resources being leaked, and also if he has had any discreet contact with the US Embassy asking them to put pressure on his colleague from Belmopan?

Would the Member for Collet and Minister of Education please confirm or deny reports that he has approached Mayor of Belmopan Khalid Belisle and is encouraging him to challenge John Saldivar for the Belmopan seat?

Would the Member for Belize Rural North and Minister who can’t travel to the US anymore please give the real reason why his Diplomatic and Tourist Visas were revoked by the US? Could he further say why he is afraid to go to the US Embassy to discuss the matter?

Would the Member for Orange Walk East and junior Minister of Police please say why the Department is trying to cover up the allegations of sexual harassment being made against senior officers, including the OC of San Ignacio?

Could he say whether it is because the OC is a UDP political agent?

Wanna know where we are after 8 years of Barrow & Ashcroft, take a walk on the Southside, in Gungulung or maybe Antelope Street extension. Wanna know where Mr. Barrow is after 8 years of Barrow & Ashcroft – well, you’d need to take a bus to Placencia and ask permission to walk on the beach in front of his fancy resort. Oh, his law partner, the one who was with him when that secret agreement with Ashcroft was signed…well he has a fancy resort right next door to DOB’s one. How quaint.

People need to wake the hell up. Fuh REAL. You do me…

That was the message sent to Dean Oliver and Patrick Faber by John Saldivar. Of course, he didn’t tell them in Cabinet on Tuesday. And he didn’t tell them face to face.

In true warrior fashion, JS took it to them on Facebook, where he’s been fighting all his battles since Patrick sent him home crying last year. I kinda like the guy, to tell you the truth. Of course, I liked him more before that picture started circulating on the Internet, but I’m not gonna say anything more about that. Let me just finish by saying that Patrick has been heard telling his close friends that as far as JS is concerned, this means war.

Let’s be real. There was a time in the UDP when crap like this wouldn’t be happening – when JS wouldn’t have dared to issue such a disrespectful message. But you can stick a fork in Dean Oliver, because he’s done. He’s on the way out, sooner rather than later and ain’t nobody worried about him anymore. John still figures he’s got a shot at leadership, but blames Patrick for the pressure coming down from the US. Patrick isn’t going to let anyone rain on his parade and is already shoring up support. Word to this tired old scribe is that Patrick has gone to his mentor Dean Oliver (who has been desperately seeking a new leader for the UDP) and the attack is on. El Odio, for his loyalty, has been promised that he will be the full Minister of a reconstituted Ministry of National Security once JS is gone. The Mayor of Belmopan has allegedly been brought into the mix to challenge JS, with the full support of Patrick. And get this…I hear Patrick has approached Godwin to run against Castro because he wants him gone.

It’s full-fledged war in the UDP, and I’m loving it.

I ain’t never gonna mess with that guy Louis Wade, that’s for sure – powerful fellow dat. Just a couple weeks ago the Policeman/UDP political agent pulled a low on Wade, arresting him and taking him before the Courts on a bogus trumped up charge manufactured to protect the son of his political boss, Rene Montero. Everybody knows this thing was a farce. Everybody knows the OC’s game – he sits up front and center when there are UDP political meetings. But he went ahead and did what he was instructed to do and retribution was swift. Now that OC has his own worries, and it seems that he may himself end up in Court to answer to charges of sexual assault (AGAIN) after allegations were made against him just this week. The Police are trying to cover it up but it may already be too late for that because the story is out and the victims, we are told, are talking. Let’s see you get out of this one. Nuff respect Louis. You dah God pikni.

Free Zone…

I’m hearing that workers in the Free Zone at the northern border are being charged to go to work every day, and that money has to be paid into the office before they are allowed to go into the Zone. Talk bout greedy and wutless.

There was a tine, not so long ago, when the Free Zone was thriving and was second only to tourism in revenue. There was a time when Corozal had the lowest unemployment rate in the country. But of course, all that was before the UDP took over. Now the Zone is on life support, and the UDP are charging workers to work. My lerd. Imagine that.

Barrow & Ashcroft

P

repare for it. It’s coming. It’s inevitable, imminent, as predictable as the rash that comes with a bad case of gonorrhea, and just as disturbing. Within the next few days, Dean Oliver will go into his well-rehearsed, tried and true spiel. With practiced gestures, rhetorical flourishes and dramatic facial expressions he will pontificate at length about the People’s United Party, the Accommodation Agreement and that devilish fellow, his good friend Lord Michael Ashcroft. You see, the final payment for the arbitrary acquisition of BTL is due – the payment which was orchestrated by DOB in a very secret meeting in Miami in 2015.

As a result of that agreement in Miami between Barrow, and Ashcroft – an agreement taken to the House only after it had already been signed – Mr. Barrow offered Lord Ashcroft a blank check – A BLANK CHECK, with specific payment terms binding the government of Belize irrevocably when the figures were entered on that blank check. But wait, said Mr. Barrow – don’t worry about the $557 MILLION you will have to pay. Because of my genius and negotiating skills, he explained, Ashcroft will have to give us back 60% of the award to use for projects in Belize. He pranced and preened, gloating over this amazing achievement which vindicated the nefarious actions of his government. But we never got a cent of that 60%, which would have been in the region of $230M. And now, with the final payment due, we learn that the country is to get only $250,000. Imagine that – from a $230M Barrow promise to a $250,000 Barrow reality. How did this happen? Who made this happen?

Mr. Barrow will blame the Accommodation Agreement, a document more than a decade old, and one which he could have challenged at any point since 2008 but chose not to. He will use words like odious, and may even throw in a malignant tumour or two, but he will not explain why he and his government decided to withdraw the challenges to the Accommodation Agreement launched way back when by the PUC and the ACB, both under his control. Mr. Barrow will blame the PUP, a party which has been out of office since 2008, nine years now – a Party which has had no hand in the decision making processes which ultimately indebted Belizeans more than half a billion dollars for BTL while enriching a certain select few. But he will not acknowledge that it is he who made every single decision as regards BTL and Ashcroft since 2009 – from seizure to protracted, expensive litigation to secret settlement agreement to incredible payout to more litigation. ALL BARROW. And Mr. Barrow will blame Lord Ashcroft, his very good friend but conveniently favourite villain. He will call Ashcroft all manner of terrible names, and say all manner of terrible things about him. He will call him despicable and greedy and paint him a monster. Like a Shakespearean actor Mr. Barrow will stalk the national stage, howling in outrage, gnashing teeth and pulling hairs – okay maybe not pulling hairs. But he will be magnificent in his anguish. And it will all be just a sham, a farce, a façade, a soap opera starring Dean Oliver. The agreement with Ashcroft was drafted, we are told,

by Barrow and Rodwell Williams, both learned attorneys.

The truth – not the UDP propaganda or the PUP propaganda but the truth – is that Lord Ashcroft would not have been able to do with us what he has if DOB had not met with him in Miami and signed that secret agreement.

Ashcroft is claiming that his liabilities, to be deducted from what Barrow boasted would come to the country, amount to tens of millions of dollars.

How is it that the learned Messrs Barrow and Williams did not enquire as to liabilities before they signed the agreement? Why is it that these learned gentlemen did not put a ceiling to liabilities able to be claimed in that agreement? Did the question of liabilities not come up during the meeting? Why did Barrow agree to pay ALL of Ashcroft’s liabilities? Why did Mr. Barrow give his friend Lord Ashcroft a blank check in payment for BTL, and a blank check for his liabilities? Why? But perhaps a more serious consideration is this. Mr. Barrow is many things, but he is not a fool. So why was the agreement so open-ended, badly drafted and clearly in favour of Ashcroft? Consider something else. Who has benefitted from every decision made between 2009 and today? While Mr. Barrow tries desperately to link Ashcroft to the PUP, the stubborn facts say otherwise. It is plain for all to see. It isn’t rocket science.

Con gestos ensayados, florituras retóricas y expresiones faciales dramáticas pontificara largamente sobre el Partido Unido del Pueblo (PUP), el Acuerdo de Acomodo y de aquel tipo diabólico, su gran amigo Lord Michael Ashcroft. Verás, el pago final por la adquisición arbitraria de BTL se vence, ese pago que fue orquestado por Dean Oliver Barrow (DOB) en una reunión muy secreta en Miami en el año 2015 Como resultado de ese acuerdo en Miami entre Barrow y Ashcroft – un acuerdo presentado a la Asamblea Nacional sólo después de que ya había sido firmado, el Sr. Barrow le oferto al señor Ashcroft un cheque en blanco: un cheque en blanco con plazos de pago específicos vinculando irrevocablemente al Gobierno de Belice para cuando las figuras fueron introducidas a ese cheque en blanco. El Sr. Barrow culpará el Acuerdo de Acomodo, un documento de hace más de una década y que él podría haber recusado desde 2008 pero decidió no hacerlo. Él usara palabras como odioso y puede que incluso agregue uno o dos tumores malignos, pero no explicará por qué él y su Gobierno decidieron retirar las objeciones al Acuerdo de Acomodo hechas por la PUC y la ACB, ambos bajo su control. El Sr. Barrow culpara al PUP, un partido que ha estado fuera del gobierno desde 2008, hace nueve años – un partido que no ha participado en los procesos de la toma de decisiones que en última instancia han endeudados a los Beliceños por más de 500 millones dólares por BTL y enriquecido a una determinada selección minoritaria. Pero él no reconoce que es él quien ha hecho cada decisión en cuanto a BTL y Ashcroft desde 2009 – desde la incautación de bienes a costosos litigios prolongados, a acuerdos de transacción secretos de increíbles pagos a luego más litigios. TODO BARROW. Y el Sr. Barrow culpara al Señor Ashcroft, su muy buen amigo pero convenientemente su villano favorito. Le llamará toda clase de nombres terribles a Ashcroft y dirá toda clase de cosas terribles sobre él. Le llamara codicioso y despreciable y lo pintara un monstruo. Como un actor shakesperiano el Sr. Barrow transitara por el ámbito nacional, gritando con indignación, rechinando los dientes y tirándose de los pelos, bueno tal vez no tirándose de los pelos. Pero será magnífico en su angustia. Y todo será pura pantalla, una farsa, una fachada, una telenovela protagonizada por Dean Oliver. El acuerdo con Ashcroft fue redactado se nos dice, por Barrow y Rodwell Williams, ambos ilustres abogados.

La verdad, no la propaganda del UDP o la propaganda del PUP pero la purísima verdad, es que el Señor Ashcroft no habría sido capaz de hacer con nosotros lo que ha hecho si DOB no se hubiera reunido con él en Miami y firmado ese acuerdo secreto. Ashcroft afirma que sus responsabilidades legales, que se deben de restar de lo que se jactó Barrow vendría al país, ascienden a decenas de millones de dólares. ¿Cómo es que los ilustres Señores Barrow y Williams no investigaron en cuanto a los pasivos antes de firmar el acuerdo? ¿Cómo es que estos eruditos señores no le pusieron un techo a los pasivos que se pudiesen cobrar en ese acuerdo? ¿No se discutió la cuestión de los pasivos durante la sesión? ¿Por qué Barrow se comprometió a pagar todos los pasivos de Ashcroft? ¿Por qué el Señor Barrow le dio a su amigo Lord Ashcroft un cheque en blanco en pago por BTL y otro cheque en blanco para sus responsabilidades legales? ¿Por qué?

Pero quizás una consideración más grave es esta. El Señor Barrow será muchas cosas, pero no es un tonto. Entonces, ¿por qué el acuerdo es tan abierto, mal redactado y claramente a favor de Ashcroft? Considere algo más. ¿Quién se ha beneficiado de cada decisión tomada entre el 2009 y hoy? Mientras que el Sr. Barrow desesperadamente intenta vincular a Ashcroft con el PUP, los innegables hechos dicen lo contrario. Está claro para todos. Esto no es ciencia espacial.

DID MoE MANIPULATE PSE RESULTS? Thursday, 08 June 2017 How far would Minister of Education Patrick Faber and his cronies at the Ministry of Education go to discredit teachers and schools which participated in the 11-day strike in October 2016? Would Faber et al, for example, manipulate PSE results for those schools so that teachers would look bad and the Minister’s position of condemnation of striking teachers would be vindicated?

That is the question which is being asked by the teachers and principals of many schools who have been scrutinizing the results presented by the Ministry earlier this week. While not publicly, many educators have been expressing concern that the results for their particular schools are much lower than they anticipated, and they do not trust the Ministry of Education.

The results this year, as released by the Ministry, are far from wonderful. Half of the 7,077 students who took the Math exam failed, and just a little over half passed the Science section of the PSE. A quarter of those who sat the English portion received a 49% or less, and the average score for Social Studies was only 68.1%.

Of the 25 top finishers, 90% were from private schools.

The Belize Times has been doing its own investigation, and has discovered some disturbing elements to the allegations. Sources in education claim that every year volunteers in the country check the PSE results, and this year there was a deviation from that practice in that the Ministry hand-picked those who would check the exams.

Also, sources claim that the results were received by the Ministry a full two weeks ago, and are only now being released, when in the past they would have been released just two or three days after receipt by the Ministry.

Minister of Education Patrick Faber has failed at every turn when it comes to battling with teachers.

He was unable to cut their salaries as he wished to do, and was unable to force them to work days dictated by himself and his Ministry. In the end, as a show of petty immaturity, he resorted to using taxpayer monies to reward those teachers who did not go on strike, at a time when the country was experience budget cuts across the board. But was that enough for Faber? Would he stoop so low as to manipulate PSE results so the Ministry can blame teachers because of the 11 days they were on strike. That is the talk in the classrooms and on the streets. If it is so, Faber is even more of a disgrace than we believed.

Family Loses Everything to Fiery Blaze Thursday, 08 June 2017 Fire destroyed the house of former police officer Catherine St. Claire and Ian Staine in the Holy Emmanuel Extension area of Lake Independence in Belize City. The blaze erupted after 9a.m. today, Thursday while the couple was away earning their living as they usually do after dropping off their children at school early every morning.

The fire fighters came, put out the fire and left and the house-owners were none the wiser of what had transpired. That’s because according to neighbours, the couple has no cell phone and they could not be located immediately since they travel on their bicycle carts to different areas of the city to sell fish after purchasing the marine product at the Conch Shell Bay fish market.

St. Claire’s sister who lives opposite to her house was not at home at the time.

The elevated wooden two-bedroom house was completely destroyed along with

all its contents. The total value of the loss has yet to be determined. We are told that among the couple’s children, one is attending Sadie Vernon High School while the others – at least four - attend the Salvation Army.

According to the residents, fire fighters arrived some ten minutes after the fire started and had to enter through some 200 feet of 'London Bridges' from the main road to the scene with their hose. Belize Electricity Limited technicians were on the scene to ensure that the fire fighters were not in any danger while performing their job since the area is known for dangerous illegal electricity connections.

While we have not received the results of the National Fire Service’s preliminary investigation, the suspicion among the neighbours is that the house was deliberately set on fire. A house frame that has been erected a few feet away from the burned house was spared from the blaze.

PRESS RELEASE National Song Competition 2017 Each year, the National Celebrations Commission strives to highlight Belize’s rich and unique cultural heritage through the numerous events held to commemorate our national celebrations. One such event is the National Song Competition which was created to provide professional and amateur musicians with the opportunity to create and showcase their original pieces. The goal of the competition is to promote artistic expression, national pride and Belize’s diverse culture.

The competition was created to give both professionals and amateur song-writers and performing artists an opportunity to showcase their original pieces on a grand stage. It comprises of two categories:

Thursday, 08 June 2017 Carlos Perdomo, the Cabinet Secretary who was once a minister in charge of Immigration, went before the Senate Select Committee to testify on Wednesday. He had to defend himself against the allegation that he obliged Immigration officers to grant a passport for an applicant who did not qualify. Readers will remember the case very well, since it was highlighted in the Auditor General’s report. The Retired Immigration Officer, Therese Chavarria also went before the Senate to confirm the report. It involved an application from May 2011, when Chavarria was the officer in charge at the Belize City passport office.

She told the Senate in April of this year that on May 11, 2011, a man who went by the name of “Paul Ku”, came to the office to apply for a passport.

He was accompanied by Justice of the Peace Rina Chiu Hsiang Lo, who was known to be in and out of the Immigration Department as a facilitator for persons looking to get Belizean immigration documents. According to Chavarria, Lo attempted to bribe her, a bribe she did not take. After careful vetting, Chavarria claims she discovered that Ku did not meet the requirements for a passport, so it was denied.

The senior officer further testified that she went on holiday and when she returned, she discovered from her supervisor, CEO Ruth Meighan, that Ku had gotten his passport through a directive from then Minister Carlos Perdomo.

So, Carlos Perdomo’s integrity was being called into question, and add to that, the Audit team questioned him about his relationship to Rina Chiu Hsiang Lo. He said, “She is in Caribbean Shores and lives on the Northern Highway. She is a good friend of mine and I got to know her when I was getting involved in politics.”

He was being accused of using his influence as a Minister of Immigration to oblige an application’s processing, and by his own admission, he was being tied to a person accused of trying to bribe a public officer.

The first thing he went before the Senate to do was to deny that

he gave any such instruction to Ruth Meighan for “Paul Ku’s” application to be processed. The interesting thing is that when he was first asked this question by the Audit team, he said, “I don’t recall. I do not think I directed anything…” He came before the Senate asserting that he was sure that he did give any such direction, and the Senators challenged him on that, in which he was forced to concede that he said he couldn’t remember, but that he is now sure he didn’t.

He also attempted to call Therese Chavarria’s character into question by suggesting that she withheld information from her superiors about her suspicion. He also said, “She was supposedly bribed but nobody knew of that.”

His statement, if you believe Chavarria, is a mischaracterization of fact. She said that this woman tried to bribe her, and she wouldn’t take the money. She even handed it over to her superiors, and it was paid into the Government’s coffers in a questionable way.

Perdomo suggested that Chavarria behaved improperly when she took home Paul Ku’s application. Chavarria told the Senate, when it was her turn, that the reason she took the file home was that she suspected that attempts would be made to try to process it. She said that Rina Chiu Hsiang Lo is a persistent individual, and that she was trying to prevent the opportunity for this application to be processed. Despite this public servant’s best attempts, however, “Paul Ku” got a Belize passport anyway.

Also, Perdomo claimed that he never recommended people for nationality unless he got an approval from both the Officer in Charge of the Nationality Section, who was Gordon Wade, at the time, and the Director of Immigration.

Business Senator Mark Lizarraga challenged him on that assertion with the specific case of Palestinian Mohamed Khalil Owemer. As regards that case, the Audit team believed that he did not qualify for nationality, yet he was still given that nationality by Carlos Perdomo.

Under intense cross examination, Perdomo had to concede that he may have given his Ministerial approval for nationality with only former Director Ruth Meighan’s recommendation that applications be given nationality.

It is open to all Belizeans both juniors and seniors. Groups of persons or individuals may enter but will be treated as one entity. Entries will be judged based on: Audience Appeal, Musical Arrangement, Vocal Quality, Lyrical Content and Stage Performance.

DPP Says Pakeman Case Was Mismanaged

Thursday, 08 June 2017 The Director of Public Prosecutions, Cheryl-Lynn Vidal, generally reserved in her public appearances and statements, had harsh criticism for what she deems as mismanagement of the Dorian Pakeman case from the start.

On May 26th, Senior Magistrate Sharon Frazer dismissed the single charge of ‘causing death by careless conduct’ against the Government Press Office Director during the preliminary inquiry.

The Court accepted the submissions of Pakeman’s attorney, Brian Neal that there was insufficient evidence to commit the case to the Supreme Court for trial. He pointed out that Sherla Adolphus, who has children with 45-year-old Dean Dawson, the mechanic who was killed in the March 2016 traffic accident involving Pakeman sent a letter informing that she did not want the case to proceed. That’s because she and Pakeman had settled a civil suit out of Court and she received compensation of $45,000. However, it is only the Office of the DPP which can decide if a case should be pursued further or not.

Despite it being a requirement, DPP Vidal says her office was not informed by the Defense that they intended to make submissions of ‘no evidence.’ She found out what happened at the preliminary inquiry after the outcome was posted to social media. She was also surprised to learn that the police prosecutor offered no objections to the arguments presented by the Defense. Instead, he left it up to the Senior Magistrate to decide based completely on the submissions of the Defense attorney. The DPP noted that it would have been more appropriate for him to have asked for an adjournment so her office could be properly informed of the development in the case.

In the DPP’s view, there was clear evi-

dence of Pakeman driving carelessly on the night of the accident.

She points out that while a charge for ‘manslaughter by negligence’ could not be upheld, they were certain that the charge of ‘causing death by careless conduct’ would be proven. She pointed to the length of the brake impression on the Philip Goldson Highway that led directly to where the vehicle stopped, the fact that it was a head on collision on the left side of the road heading to Belize City, as Pakeman was and the extent of the injuries to Dawson and to the vehicle. Those, she says, tells that Pakeman was driving at a speed limit above what was legal in that area and hence, conducting himself carelessly.

The DPP also took issue with Senior Magistrate Frazer’s assertion that there is no need to clog up the court system by sending the case to the Supreme Court, when, according to the Defense, all that would be relied on was Pakeman’s own caution statement, since Adolphus was refusing to testify going forward. The assertion by the DPP’s office is that Adolphus is not the common-law wife of Dawson because although she has children for him they never lived together. Additionally, since she was not a witness in the case her cooperation was unnecessary. The common-law wife of Dawson, Teresita Abraham was a witness in the case and had expressed to the DPP’s Office that she wanted the case to continue. The Senior Magistrate did point out that because it is an indictable matter, if additional evidence is gathered the case could be brought back.

As to future possibilities, the DPP can now take the matter before the Supreme Court and apply for a warrant for Pakeman’s committal for trial. At such time, she would have to prove that there is sufficient evidence to proceed to trial and that the Magistrate erred in law.

On Friday, June 2nd, the PUP Belize Rural Central Committee partnered with Ladyville RC School for a BBQ fundraiser. The collaborative effort was aimed at raising funds to recover desperately needed office equipment that was destroyed in an arson of the Principal's office in Mid-April of this year.

It was a joyous and overwhelming moment as Principal, Ms Denise Neal, along with her vice principal & staff expressed their heartfelt thanks to the PUP committee for reaching out and assisting approximately 600 children.

Special thanks goes out to Mr. Christopher Coye who believes that by working together we can make a better community. Thanks also to Gentrac, Centaur Cable Network, Belize Aviation Eng. GOVERNANCE DUNCES There is a word called “Credibility.” It is a noun, and it means “the quality of being credible.” And, lest we forget, credible means “Able to be believed; Convincing.” (Just go and ask Alvarine Burgess, aka Cosa !!) Maybe young Lionel Martin, the champion speller, could have spelled Credibility for the Barrow administration, instead of Ossuary (interesting meaning).

I am still shaking my head about the happenings of this past week. Ms. Nisbet said “I don't remember” at least ten times, when being questioned by members of the Senate Committee. PM Barrow, clearly well prepared for what he knew journalists would ask, curled himself into all sorts of contortions in order to defend those who MUST NOT be defended – Saldivar, Castro and Yellowman.

The man good, you know what I mean. But he has NO credibility.

However, I believe that what takes the cake is the posting by Minister Saldivar, obviously meant to quarrel with his Cabinet colleague, Minister Aragon. To paraphrase: please don't open your mouth; you may well confirm that you are a downright fool. As it turns out, the joke is on Saldivar, because Aragon has definitely found himself on the right side in this Coast Guard Transporting Bandits kerfuffle.

On a very serious note, though, I am extremely concerned about the manner in which men and women who work for the government as CEOs, Ambassadors, Commanders of the Armed Forces, and Defence Ministry personnel defend and/or turn a blind eye to Ministerial wrongdoing and corruption. These people are professionals, educated functionaries, and hopefully persons of integrity.

Yet, they cower and excuse the conduct and the directives of their political bosses.

Let us take the utterances of Admiral John Borland, for example. Listen to the litany of lame excuses, all offered up by him in a sheepish, regrettable way. First, he said that the transporting of Saldivar's Bandits team was “not exactly” wanton waste!! Next, he informed that “we are reimbursed for the fuel.” I know a little about boats and motors, and there must

have already been used hundreds if not thousands of gallons of fuel on these ill-advised escapades following minister's orders. I would have to see this reimbursement in order to believe it. Then Mr. Borland went on to say that his Coast Guard has supported other teams and assisted NGOs, schools, and government departments. The minister was “requesting a favour” in their enduring partnership, and had inquired whether it was within the purview of our work to accommodate him(!!)

He then pleaded pathetically not once but thrice that they did nothing illegal or illicit!! Am I missing something here? This is the head of our Coast Guard saying they did nothing unlawful. I don't quite get it. He continued: as long as it does not take away from supporting our operations, then I believe it is alright. The vessels were not deployed; they were just sitting back, being repaired then prepared for subsequent operations. Finally, poor guy, he intoned: If the United States has an issue with us using them for the purpose of supporting the community, then let them say so, and if they do we shall discontinue it!!

Mr. Borland sir, you are sacrificing your credibility in trying to defend that which is not defensible. Your minister is dead wrong.

The Belizean people say so. His Cabinet colleagues say so.

The United States says so. You cannot use public assets for private purposes and private gain, period.

And in not wishing to implicate any UDP official or colleague in any passport or immigration wrongdoing, Ms. Nisbet is also sacrificing her credibility with a bout of amnesia, as seems to be the norm among witnesses at the Senate Inquiry. I could use other examples; these are only a few. I believe Belizeans can get the thrust of what I am talking about. Good governance demands honesty, probity, credibility. The Prime Minister knows this only too well. Additionally, all right-thinking public servants need to follow the tenets of accountability. Instead, what we have here are Governance Dunces, and Saldivar is the one who is today wearing the biggest Dunce Cap.

THINKING OUT LOUD BY: KEVIN BERNARD

For a while now I’ve left what’s happening on the national stage alone for the very fact that it is overwhelming. There is more than enough for me to focus on right here in Orange Walk Town. In fact, the work of Town Hall, managing the affairs of our municipality efficiently and effectively and well, is overwhelming at times. I feel that our team has done a good job of serving our residents. I think that we have done a good job of working to develop our infrastructure.

I feel that we have done a good job in handling the finances of the Council, your money, responsibly and well. I feel that we have done a good job in being transparent and accountable to you, our residents. For me, and for my team, this has never been about colour or Party affiliation. We didn’t get a mandate to serve supporters of the PUP, or those that have PUP flags in front of their homes, or who wear PUP shirts. We got a mandate to serve all our residents, and I am proud and humbled to say that I believe we have succeeded in doing just that.

Everywhere you look in Orange Walk Town, you will see the work of the Council, because this is a Council that works nonstop. And as soon as we finish one set of streets, we start others. It has been our commitment to our people that we will, with the steady and strong support that we have gotten, pave many more streets and I intend fully to do it. But it hasn’t been all about paving streets – our Council has also been dealing with the mundane but critical elements of municipal administration – sanitation, drainage, traffic control, parks and playgrounds. And we are serious about the safety and security of our youth as a child friendly municipality.

With that said, it is with a sense of real national shame that I felt I had to touch on national political matters at this point in time.

How can we as a nation sit each week and listen to the Senate hearings and not feel ashamed and angry? I listened to Elvin Penner just dismiss the Senate investigators as if they did not have any right to question him, as if he didn’t feel the need to explain his own crookedness at the Immigra-

tion Department. This is the man who treated our birthright as if it meant nothing, and then felt like he had the right to refuse to answer anything. I am angry at that as a Belizean. And I am angry with this government because I know, beyond any doubt, that Elvin Penner will never face any charges or be punished in any way for what he did as long as the UDP is in power.

I listened to the testimony of Alvarine Burgess last week, and again I was filled with shame as she explained how UDP Ministers took money to sign Visa recommendation letters for Chinese nationals whom they did not know.

Imagine that she claims Edmond Castro and Boots Martinez got $2000 for each Visa they facilitated. And I believe she is telling the truth. Look at how these men, normal Belizeans before they came to power, are now multi-millionaires.

What these men were doing is participating in human trafficking, but they didn’t care. From the testimony we all heard last week, they just took the money and that was that. And like with the situation of Penner, I am angry because under this UDP administration there will be no repercussions for these men.

Then to hear that the US Visas of Edmond Castro – both his Diplomatic and Tourist Visas – were revoked. Anybody can tell you that this is a serious thing.

Anybody can tell you that the US would not cancel the Visas of a sitting and senior UDP Minister without cause. But both Castro and the Prime Minister got up on national television and gave a completely ridiculous story about how the US wanted to meet with Castro to discuss the renewal of his Visas and when he didn’t show interest they cancelled them. That has to be one of the most ridiculous stories I have ever heard.

As Belizeans, we have to understand these things will have repercussions for our people and country long after Dean Barrow or Edmond Castro or Boots Martinez and Elvin Penner have moved on. Sometimes I feel that we are too complacent and we accept too much. It is way past time for a change.

SENATOR MARCONI SOSA UNDER INVESTIGATION? win Contreras in Cayo West. Contreras has told Committee members that he will not be running again. Those observers speculate that Sosa, not the brightest bulb in the shed, is trying to create a slush fund at NICH to finance his campaign in that area, allegedly with the blessings of Patrick Faber.

If that is his plan, it may come to a very unpleasant end depending on what is revealed in the investigation, and depending on whether there is any political will to end the alleged wrongdoing and irregularities at NICH. Wednesday, 07 June 2017 The Belize Times has received credible information suggesting that there is currently a very discreet investigation into the administration of the National Institute of Culture and History by Senator Marconi Sosa. Multiple sources have told us that as a result of continuous complaints about Sosa’s handling of the affairs of the statutory body, persons in the Ministry of Culture have been tasked with ascertaining if those reports of irregularities are true. We are also informed that the investigation has the blessing of the Office of the Prime Minister.

In 2016 both director of NICH Dianne Haylock and Administrator Gil Williams, both allegedly close to Prime Minister Barrow, were shown the door. After the UDP convention which saw Patrick Faber anointed as Deputy Leader of the Party, sources in NICH tell us changes were almost immediate with Faber and one of his few supporters, Elodio Aragon, making changes to the Board. We are informed that Marconi Sosa, also loyal to Faber, was brought on as Administrator of the organization which has yet to name a new Director.

Sources say that within six months, Sosa had restructured and revisited many policies within NICH to suit himself. There are reports that he has removed key oversight mechanisms which provide directions on how NICH money is spent, and has arbitrarily raised salaries for persons close to him and is promoting family members to key positions. Sosa, also a Senator, has allegedly also actively worked to demote or fire those in the Department whom he feels would ‘snitch’ on him, our sources revealed.

PG Shines in PSE Thursday, 08 June 2017 Earlier this week the Ministry of Education released the results of the PSE, preceded by the top 25 finishers. Seven of the top ten spots were taken by students from private schools – Bernice Yorke, Hummingbird Elementary and Shepherd’s Academy. But today we’d like to shine the spotlight on the deep South, Punta Gorda, which managed to capture 3rd and 4th place.

Third was taken by Devyne Lopez of Punta Gorda Methodist School while 4th went to Leeann Palma of St. Peter Claver RC School. For Punta Gorda Methodist it is history in the making and a stellar achievement not only for Lopez but for the educational institution which has made its name in a big way.

El primer tiroteo se dio esta madrugada en la localidad de Conchagua, en el oriental departamento de La Unión, cuando la una patrulla de la Fuerza Especializada de Reacción de El Salvador (FES) supuestamente repelió "una agresión" armada.

La reyerta se saldó con la muerte Héctor Antonio Cruz Amaya, de 17 años de edad, presunto cabecilla de una célula de la Mara Salvatrucha (MS13), que "delinque en el lugar".

Las otras dos muertes violentas se dieron en el occidental departamento de Sonsonate, donde un equipo del Grupo de Reacción Policial (GRP) "respondió al ataque de parte de un grupo de pandilleros de la MS13", que fueron "sorprendidos planificando la comisión

de delitos en contra de los pobladores".

En el tiroteo murieron "dos de los terroristas", cuya identidad se desconoce, y tras el enfrentamiento las autoridades decomisaron "dos armas de fuego, con su cargador y cartuchos".

El número de pandilleros muertos en balaceras con la Policía se disparó en un 109.12 % en 2016 al pasar de 285 en el 2015 a 596, de los que el 62 % pertenecían a la MS13, el 22,6 % al Barrio 18 ala Sureños, el 15.1 % a la facción Revolucionarios de la misma pandilla y el 0.3 % a la minoritaria Máquina.

El Salvador es asediado por las pandillas MS13, ambas alas del Barrio 18 y otras minoritarias, que poseen más de 600 células en todo el país, y a las cuales el Gobierno atribuye la mayoría de los crímenes.

La Policía de Orlando investiga un ataque armado en el que murieron varias personas este lunes.

4 de Junio de 2017 La primera ministra británica, Theresa May, atribuyó al extremismo islamista.

Agentes de la unidad antiterrorista de la policía metropolitana detuvieron “a 12 personas en el barrio de Barking, en el este de Londres, en conexión con los incidentes de la noche pasada en London Bridge y en la zona de Borough Market”, anunció la policía en un comunicado, precisando que continúan los registros en este barrio. Barking es un barrio modesto del este de Londres.

Tres hombres atropellaron con su furgoneta a los transeúntes que caminaban por el famoso London Bridge, el Puente de Londres, antes de abandonar el vehículo y lanzarse a acuchillar a gente en Borough Market, una zona llena de bares y restaurantes en torno a un mercado.

hombres tan sólo 8 minutos después de recibir el primer aviso del incidente.

UN MILLÓN DE INDOCUMENTADOS EN LA MIRA DE REDADAS SILENCIOSAS Activistas e inmigrantes protestan contra las deportaciones en Washington

Por EFE / Washington 5 de Junio de 2017 Esos procedimientos se hace más comunes por parte de las oficinas del Servicio de Inmigración y Aduanas (ICE) en una de las denominadas “redadas silenciosas”.

De acuerdo con Virginia Kice, vocera del ICE en el sur de California, el pasado 29 de mayo había en todo el país 968 mil 238 extranjeros no detenidos con orden final de deportación.

Sin embargo, según un informe de la Oficina del Inspector General de abril pasado, esa cifra es todavía mayor y en agosto

de 2016 ICE supervisaba a 2.2 millones de inmigrantes que no estaban detenidos.

Mark Silverman, miembro del Centro de Recursos Legales para los Inmigrantes (ILRC), advierte de que los inmigrantes con una orden de deportación final y que solicitaron detener el proceso pueden ser repatriados “inmediatamente”, pues tienen “muy pocas probabilidades” de detener un procedimiento a “discreción de los agentes del ICE”.

La anterior administración colocó a muchos de estos inmigrantes al final de la lista de expulsiones del país, pero el cambio en la política migratoria del gobi-

dad como huésped distinguido por parte del alcalde capitalino Álvaro Arzú. Por la noche, formará parte de erno de Donald Trump ha puesto a estas personas nuevamente en la mira.

La mayoría de estos migrantes viven desde hace décadas en el país, tienen hijos nacidos en EE. UU. y no tienen antecedentes criminales.

Desde hace ocho años la mexicana se presenta puntualmente ante ICE y esta obligación podría llevarla a ser deportada como otras madres en su misma situación.

La expulsión de Maribel Trujillo, una madre de cuatro niños que residía en Ohio, y Guadalupe García, madre de tres hijos que vivía en Arizona, fueron dos de los casos más visibles del peligro que enfrentan miles de inmigrantes que están bajo supervisión del ICE. “Imagínese si a ellas las sacaron con tanto apoyo, qué puedo esperar yo.

Lo único que me da miedo es con quién van a quedar mis hijos, yo fui víctima de violencia doméstica y soy la única que responde por ellos”, indica.

El miedo entre aquellos que solicitaron una prórroga a la deportación es latente y cada día está aumentando, advierte el abogado de inmigración Fernando Romo.

“Está empujando a estas personas a convertirse en fugitivos para poder ir contra ellos”, opina.
