ARAGON SR. KIDNAPPED/ HOME BURGLARIZED?

Belize City, January 10, 2019 Late this evening, police confirmed that Mr. Elodio Aragon Sr., father of Minister of State in the Ministry of National Security, Elodio Aragon Jr, was kidnapped earlier today by assailants who burglarized his home.

Mr. Aragon Sr. was taken to a location off the Philip Goldson Highway and later released unharm.

Police are investigating the matter.

Belize City: Wednesday 9th January 2019 “Of course it is the dream of any police officer’s to rise up to the top and become the commissioner of police and so if it is offered to me I am surely going to accept and will ensure that I do my best in that capacity.”

On Tuesday, the Ministry of National Security announced that Chester Williams was being appointed to full Commissioner of Police, effective January 9, 2019.

Williams takes over the reins of the Police department from Allen Whylie, who was in that post for six years since 2013.

Chester Williams’ dreams have come through; he has risen to the top to become Commissioner of Police and now it is time to wake up. The question in the minds of every Belizean is: Does he have the capacity and what it takes to rise to the occasion? To provide the long awaited acceptable level of public-safety assurance law-abiding citizens have been craving for? As we all know Williams has been at the forefront trying to put a damper on the growing, uncontrollable pestilence of Crime and Violence in Belize but with little success because citizens still remain hostages to this epidemic.

Chester Williams has been acting like Commissioner of Police for almost two years and obviously, he has been at the helm of the department since the out-going Commissioner has been the out-of-commission and out-of-site. During this time, his performance has shown that there is still a lot to be desired. In his line of police work, there is no room for him to be acting as the top cop. Some may have looked at him like the jester in the high command but that is another story.

Over the last ten years, we have all witnessed a dramatic rise in violent crime across the country to the point where it is now believed that criminals have taken over control of the streets and do as they wish at all levels of our society. While this corrupt UDP government acts with impunity using their functions in government for their personal benefit, they have neglected thier duties with the affairs of the people and lacks the ability to propose a decent strategy to serve as a blue print and guideline for the police to follow.

The police high command has been acting without a sense of direction with a growing number of elements themselves committing atrocious high profile crimes.

Our Justice system looking stagnant with a huge backlog of cases in both the magistrate’s Court and the Supreme Court.

Seemingly they have exceeded their capacity to dispense justice in a timely manner and when they finally do, only a handful gets convicted.

The new Commissioner, Chester Williams is not venturing into anything new; he has been at the boardroom with the Minister of police during the last two years, he has advised the Minister to take

certain measures that have equal a police state in certain areas of Belize City.

The Police department continues in disarray today to the point where Drug Cartels such as the Sinaloa Cartel, Los Zeta’s and Jalisco, Nueva Generacion has been utilizing our national territory for their exclusive use of their drug plane landings for transhipments into Mexico and beyond. This report has been published in Mexican Newspapers, echoed by a Mexican Brigadier General at the 34th Military Base in Chetumal Quintana Roo confirmed drug plane landings in Belize near the Mexican border, and now it has played out in New York Court during the case of Joaquin El Chapo Guzman when Vicente Zambada has repeated that Belize is a transhipment point of the Sinaloa Cartel. During this year alone more than 12 planes have landed in the Blue Creek area near Mexico; the Trafficking of humans is another concern, which has caused the US State department to reprimand the Belize Government in their quarterly Report. Contraband of liquor and Cigarettes among other products is moved in and out of Belize with no intelligence by police to stop their activities.

Meanwhile, Commissioner Chester Williams seem confused believing that citizens will continue living this nightmare of crime and violence while he continues believing that being the terms and reference of the top cop is the traditional trial and error that have the police department in the mess it is.

But the new Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams wasted no time on Wednesday to set up and restructure the new Chester Team, removing the hiccups with shake-ups in terms of commanding officers and putting other officer who he believe will realize his objectives. Some of the changes includes removing Marco Vidal as head of Special Branch and re-named commander of Operations working in tandem with Deputy Commissioner, Edward Broaster who is Head of National Operations.

Howell Gillett takes over as the head of Special Branch while A C P, Robert Mariano will take over as Commander Administration. Senior Superintendent Alden Dawson is now the Officer Commanding the Regional Eastern Division and Senior Superintendent Lincoln Hemsley will command Eastern Division (Region Three). Superintendent Daniel Arzu now heads Eastern Division (Region One); Senior Superintendent Marlon Allen takes over as Director of Training and Superintendent Dwayne Sutherland is now the head of Professional Standards Branch.

ICJ Referendum should be postponed …to a future date and held only after Belize has secured a proper and effective Sarstoon Protocol By: Francis Fonseca Freetown Area Representative Belize City: Wednesday 9th January 2019 I listened with great interest to the Prime Minister’s Press Conference featuring former Foreign Ministers of Belize.

These former Foreign Ministers are personal friends for whom I have great respect. I know them each to be strong, intelligent, independent persons who have every right to share their expertise and experience with the Belizean people.

We are all better served by having them do so. Their views should carry weight and form a part of the dialogue leading up to decision day April 10th, 2019.

Each of us has a right to our own point of view on this very important question of whether or not Belize should submit to the jurisdiction of the ICJ for final determination of the unresolved, unfounded Guatemalan claim.

It is my hope and expectation that in the remaining 10 weeks leading up to April 10th all Belizeans will have an opportunity to be fully and properly informed with relevant and factual data. We must all do our very best to be guided by facts and not solely by emotions. Neither side in this important national discussion has greater moral authority than the other.

We must understand this and respect the views of others regardless of how passionately we feel about our own position.

It is my personal view that the current Government of Belize has consistently displayed a lack of competence in managing Belize/Guatemala relations and has not carried out an effective, balanced and organized ICJ education campaign. Unless there is some dramatic shift in public opinion over these next 10 weeks, this incompetence and disorganization will lead us to a decisive NO vote on April 10th. Regrettably, I see no such shift on the horizon.

Late this evening the Police department issued the following: It was brought to our attention that there’s a circulation of a document that lists reshuffling and postings of Senior Police Officers in the Belize Police Department; we ask that this document be disregard, as the Commissioner of Police, Mr.Chester Willians is in constant dialogue and communication with his Senior Officers, and command. In light of this, the Commissioner of Police will make his official announcement to the general public of any changes within the department during the course of the 3rd week of January, 2019.

If we are truly committed to the national interest, as all parties say they are, then it is time for the government to pause, take stock of where we are and appreciate that their desired result will not be achieved on April 10th. The ICJ Referendum should be postponed to a future date and held only after Belize has secured a proper and effective Sarstoon Protocol; and only after the required and relevant amendments have been made to the Referendum Act, the Maritime Areas Act, and the Representation of the People Act; and only after all the obstacles to a free and fair Voters List have been addressed in a serious bi-partisan manner.

Personally, I would have preferred for the former Foreign Ministers to secure a commitment from the Prime Minister to address these issues in a meaningful, serious and truly bi-partisan manner before signing off on a joint declaration in support of a YES vote.

Until and unless these issues are addressed in a serious, meaningful, bi-partisan way, I cannot in good conscience support a YES vote.

We are all well served by remembering that the Belizean people will have the final say and we will all have to respect that decision.

SERVANT… PATRIOT…THE PEOPLE’S LEADER!

homas Jefferson once said that “the will of the people is the only legitimate foundation of any government, and to protect its free expression should be our first object.” This week brought us political renewal. The PUP and its Leader John Briceño, faithful to the party’s democratic origins, informed via press release that while on a listening tour Hon John Briceño has been advised by the majority rank and file of the People’s United Party that they will not support taking the unfounded Guatemalan claim on Belize to the ICJ. This is the sentiment echoed far and wide across the nation of Belize. At the conclusion of the tour he expects that the firm PUP position will be #NOTOICJ! Briceño believes that it is the responsibility of the elected representative to carry out the wishes of the constituency. There are those who believe that politicians are specialists and that it is only they who can understand the importance, implications, and intricacies of national and international policy. These same elitist believe that political leaders should be given leeway to decide for and on behalf of their constituents sans any consultation whatsoever.

Is it true that we are unqualified to make informed decisions regarding our fate as a nation? Mills explains in his book The Power Elite that is this group “they absorb the Continued on page 4

We were treated to a grotesque glimpse of the elitism that still exists in this country. That small group of powerful people who hold a disparate amount of wealth, political power and privileged education in Belizean society. Those same who were so often seemingly at odds amongst themselves quickly closed ranks in a desperate attempt at self-preservation of the status quo. No more!

The Hon John Briceño has called for bi-partisan cooperation on a number of issues like crime, gender based violence, and poverty to no avail. Times they are a changing even in Belize. The electorate will no longer endure to be told what to do, or how to think. Belize is in the midst of a technological revolution. Information is available at the click of a mouse. It is grossly disrespectful to tell the electorate that they are not informed sufficiently and are thus unqualified to make up their own minds on any matter.

Hon John Briceño respects the ability of ordinary Belizeans to make informed decisions. He respects their constitutional and God given right to voice and vote that decision. Most important John Briceño recognizes that he is but a servant of the people.

The clearest sign of patriotism is respect and love for Belize and her people. He gets it!

Hon John Briceño is not only a true patriot he is a true Leader for All Belizeans!

Message from Hon. John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition

Thank you Joe Sampson

Shakespeare in his play Julius Caesar said: “The evil that men do lives after them; “The good is oft interred with their bones.”

Joe the educator would have reminded us that what Shakespeare meant was that often times it is easier to remember the wrong or bad moments than it is to recall the good ones I can say honestly that my experiences with Joe Sampson were all good ones so when I remember him there are no wrong or bad moments that I will remember.

What I will remember is a man who, when he met with me, took every opportunity to remind me that we must work to make Belize a better country for everyone.

What I will remember is a PUP who did everything to make his Party better.

In fact earlier this year he brought me here to meet with the elders to ensure that I understand the needs of the people of this community.

What I will remember is a PUP mayor who served the good people of this community to the best of his abilities.

I will remember a mayor who did not see PUP Dangriga residents or UDP Dangriga residents, all he saw was his people, his Belizean people, his Garinagu brothers and sisters, his Dangriga people.

They say to be a teacher you have to be a person who is possessed of wisdom patience and understanding. The Joe Sampson I had the pleasure to call a friend and PUP soldier possessed all of these qualities.

I won’t try to preach a sermon here today but I think our priest will agree that one of the greatest teachers we know of is Jesus. In my religion classes I was taught that Jesus’ best lesson is the Sermon on the Mount, which is referred to as the beatitudes. In Matthew’s Gospel, Chapter 5 it is written that Jesus himself thought this lesson. Jesus said “Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God.” I am sure Joe will see God. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” – Joe was a peacemaker.

“Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted.” He felt every loss in this community.

Today like all of us here, I feel sad because we are saying goodbye to Joe, but I also feel blessed to have known and spent a lot of time with him. As I said, Joe was a man with a clean heart; a man who was a peace maker and I am comforted because Joe the man, Joe the friend and Joe the teacher lived as best he could, the Beatitudes.

In the PUP we believe our work is to serve the people.

It is a part of our true blue philosophy.

As the leader of the PUP I will say Joe lived our true blue philosophy and for that I say on behalf of all of us in the People’s United Party to Joe’s family, his friends and this community.

Thank you for sharing Joe Sampson with us.

We will always be grateful for his service.

May his soul and the souls of all our dearly departed rest in peace.

Real Democracy The PM is up to his old tricks, that wily old dog. He thinks that sitting on his throne with four PUP former foreign ministers flanking him will cause a division in the grand ole party. Nothing could be further from the truth. Where the ICJ is concerned, every man and woman of voting age is free to vote their own minds and conscience. Where the PUP is concerned, our good, good leader has decided that a formal position should not come from the executive, but from the many thousands of people who are the real power in the PUP. And if the people decide that they do not want to go to the ICJ, then so be it. If the people decide that they want to go to the ICJ, then so be it. Instead of strutting up on center stage like a big old bald peacock, Dean O should try to get his government to educate and inform the people. This isn’t about aesthetics. Or a show.

That’s about all the UDP is good for – circus antics.

Whistleblower We noticed that a few cops who were at the Prime Minister’s circus show on Wednesday looked very uneasy and unhappy. That’s probably because a few of their names were called by the whistle-blower, Edward Vincent Martinez, who claims to have all the goods – videos, photos, the works – to show that they are involved in the landing of drug planes. Names in the highest echelons of government have been called. Names of top cops have been called.

The name of one senior member of the BDF has been called, and the whistle-blower isn’t even attempting to hold back. One source in the Ministry of National Security told us that everybody’s pointing fingers at each other right now, and everybody’s looking over their shoulders. Keep your eyes on this one folks. This one is going to get very, very interesting.

Sympathies On that note, the Belize Times would like to express our best wishes for a speedy recovery to a senior member of the UDP based in the north. We understand that immediately following the interview with the whistle-blower, he took sick and his doctors had to be called in to attend to him. Poor guy. He’s been under a lot of stress for a while now. And then to have his name called during that interview, and for the whistle-blower to say that he has the evidence to prove certain cartel connections. Wow. We sincerely hope that he’ll recover from his sudden illness – at least recover enough so that he can take that long walk to prison if the promised evidence does surface.

Told You Didn’t we tell you that Allen Whylie would go from lame duck to dead duck in a hurry? And without even the courtesy of a ceremonial handing over, or a briefing for all of us in the media to wish him well.

No handshakes, no hugs. Just out the door. Gone. There’s more to this one than meets the eyes, folks. We have this feeling that this is related to the whistle-blower making a comment about this allegedly dirty cop who is a relative of Whylie who was caught near a drug plane and released and then re-arrested. But hey, we wish the old Whylie all the best. He served long and served his masters well.

Poor John We regret to announce the death of the political aspirations of John Saldivar. We understand that in a very few weeks, the poor guy will once again be moved from the Ministry of National Security, where he once again proved that he is nothing but a spent bullet.

Under Saldivar, Belize has seen the most murders on record – 143 in 2018 alone. Under John Saldivar, Belizeans celebrated New Year’s Day with five murders. All these fancy operations. The BDF on the street. State of Emergency because John needed to show himself.

And crime is completely out of control. But it’s not only that. The Belize Times understands that the government’s favourite uncle is pressing for Saldivar’s removal. And pressing hard. So who will be Saldivar’s replacement, you may ask? We are told that the Prime Minister has his eyes on Michael Peyrefitte for the job. Maybe he needed a bigger man than John to tackle crime and Peyrefitte was the only option. Who knows? But you better believe that John won’t take this one sitting down, and sources inside the UDP say that he is already gearing up for a very nasty war. Like Kermit, we’ll just sit on the sidelines sipping tea and watch the UDP continue to implode.

PUP City Council enjoys the Confidence of the Business Community Belize City: Wednesday 9th. January 2019 The emergence of Bernard Joseph Wagner in the political arena has been a breath of fresh air of sorts.

The career banker and self-made businessman came at the right time, with the right vision and to the right party.

He has been able to breathe new life into the Belize City economy which had been on life support since the United Democratic Party (UDP) took office in 2006.

Since March 2018, Mayor Wagner has been able to enjoy the confidence of not only the common man but also the business community.

Unlike his predecessors who had the backing of central government, Mayor Wagner’s council does not have that luxury.

However, he has never faltered in meeting payroll and other commitments in a timely fashion.

Although by the time he took office more than half of the council’s budget was squandered on electioneering by his predecessors his council has remained afloat in a miraculous way.

Even when the Belmopan City Council could not meet its financial obligations, the Belize City Council stood solid as a rock for all to see.

Mayor Wagner has cut out the wastage at city hall. He and his team are not living high off the hog as is usually the case with politicians.

There are no menages a troi and caviar parties like the UDP days.

This council understands that its goal is not self-enrichment but the upliftment of all people in its municipality.

This council has kept the streets of Belize City clean like never before.

You can take a walk and not be baffled by the unbearable smell or the sight of garbage.

The Belize Waste Control (BWC) and the Belize City Council have forged a relationship based on mutual trust and respect that has kept the city sanitary.

The previous UDP led councils have fought the BWC and lost millions in court only for UDP cronies to line their pockets with legal fees.

We say so because they have never secured any victory for the people of Belize City in the way that this council has in an amicable fashion.

To this day, the BWC has not dragged this People’s United Party (PUP) led City Council before the Courts for failure to meet its financial obligations.

The business community has shown enormous confidence in the Belize City Council.

When Mexico announced that, its border state of Quintana Roo would serve as free zones with overwhelming tax discounts, the Belize City Council sprang into action to

ensure that businesses kept open and that Belizeans were not sent home from their job places.

With its monthly discount Sale Zone, the Belize City Council and the business community have rejuvenated downtown Belize City.

The old capital has returned to its glory days as the Mecca of trade in the country.

Thousands of Belizeans from across the country flock to Belize City to participate in the discount sale zone.

And while Mayor Wagner has shown his confidence in the business community, the business community has shown its confidence in his leadership.

Earlier this week, the Belize City Council was able to secure a line of

credit with a local business house for a fleet of 24 vehicles to improve efficiency by the departments under the council.

The vehicles cost an estimated $500,000 but is seen as a worthy investment in our city when we compare it to the estimated $400,000, a previous UDP mayor and his city administrator spent to buy two vehicles for themselves.

Mayor Wagner has credibility.

His name is good.

That is why a corporate entity has committed to building a colossal park on Belize City’s south side that will be able to rival the BTL Park on the north side.

Information to our newspaper is that this park should be constructed before the end of 2019.

At this newspaper, we can go on and on about the stellar work of Mayor Wagner and his Council but he said it best when he said, “The fact of the matter is that our council’s success at the polls was as a result of our social infrastructure platform, which spoke about putting people first rather than projects. That message resonated with the people. However, captured also in our manifesto was the fact that we said that we were going to be business-friendly. The challenge for our council was to find the balance that is to drive business opportunities in our local economy while at the same time ensuring that residents of the City be recipients and participants in the business’s activities.”

MY PERSPECTIVE

LITA AND HER DAD

I was pleased when in early December I heard that Lita Hunter Krohn had put out her short biography of her father Alexander Albert Hunter, Sandy Hunter as he was popularly known. Lita had shared with me probably a year ago that she was working on a book about her Dad, and I recall that I was looking forward to its release.

Once I heard on the news that the book was out and that it had been launched at Saint John’s College among the history students, I made my way the very short distance from Queen Street to the Image Factory bookstore on North Front Street to pick up my copy of “The Man Who Wore Khaki.” Artist Katie Numi Usher, who wrote the Foreword to the book, greeted me with her usual huge smile and friendly disposition. Twenty five dollars later I could boast my own copy, so that I would have a bit of reading material for the Christmas break.

I have greatly enjoyed this text. It is replete with numerous photographs and other printed material, and at only 128 pages it was not a difficult read at all. Lita’s penchant for “living” history and her praiseworthy accomplishments in the study and teaching of Caribbean, Central American and Belizean history did her well as she put together the story of her own father and his life and times. As usual Yasser Musa and the Image Factory Art Foundation have provided the forum for us to learn of and participate in the publications of our writers. My own “Jazz Sketches – Profiles of Thirty Greats” was published by the Image Factory in September 2009, and I will always be grateful to Yasser for his vision and commitment to Belizean expression.

Sir Sandy Hunter was indeed a great man. Although he could have remained a private citizen and continued working for James Brodie and Company, he chose to enter elected politics and to serve three terms in the House of Representatives as the Member for Fort George in the People’s United Party. I admire how Lita set his life and times in historical context that goes back a fairly long way. Sandy’s forebear on his father’s side was a Scottish “scoundrel” Charles Thompson Hunter, who for self gain totally disregarded the good of the population of Belize Town in the late nineteenth century. On his return to Scotland, he came to a horrific end when he was run over and dismembered by a train. Lita’s grandfather was a son of CT Hunter, Alexander John Hunter, who married Laurita Reyes and had with

her several children including Sandy. When Laurita died early from cancer, Alexander John married again and had six more children, including the well-known Fred Hunter, the Dad of my old classmates Tootie (Dolores) and Luz Hunter.

My favorite photo in Lita’s book is that of four generations of Hunter women: Lita’s great-great grandmother, the black woman Sarah Campbell; her great-grandmother Margaret Moore Reyes; her grandmother Laurita Reyes Hunter; and her aunt Nessie Hunter Burn.

Clearly Lita has done a wonderful job in documenting the family background of her Dad Sandy.

Sandy Hunter spent time in Costa Rica, where he met and married Lita’s mother Araceli Marin Hunter, and he had been in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. Lita was able to document her father’s solid contributions to the development of Belize because Sandy scrupulously kept his speeches, and copious notes and correspondence throughout his time as Minister in the self-government Cabinet of George Price.

Sandy toiled diligently as a leader and policy-maker in the Agriculture Industry, the Fishing Industry, the Tourism Industry and the Sugar Industry, and he played an integral role in ensuring that the sugar farmers of the North became land owners and license holders for the delivery of cane in this still vital contributor to the Belizean economy. The Sandy Hunter Library in Orange Walk Town is named in tribute to Sir Sandy for his sterling service that positively impacted the Northern Districts.

In “The Man Who Wore Khaki” Lita has made sure, without sentimentality, to chronicle her Dad’s life and times. He was truly an honest man who at all times, as she tells us, tried to do the right thing. He largely gave up the suits and fancy attire of privileged Belizeans of his time, and embraced the working man’s clothes along with the man who wore guayaberas and who, with Sandy’s help, led Belize from a colonial backwater to an emerging nation in Central America and the Caribbean. I don’t know if it was a perfect fit in her book about her Dad Sir Sandy, but Lita also included some Snippets of Belizean and regional history, as she calls them, in her text. Never mind, any documentation of our local and regional history is always welcome. I do heartily recommend “The Man Who Wore Khaki” to everyone interested in Belizean history, and I am happy that Lita wrote this brief story of her Dad. A commendable effort, I think.

BELIZE TERRITORIAL VOLUNTEERS Press Release For immediate release Contact person Wil Maheia 610-0978 Date 10 January 2019 Belize Territorial Volunteers condemns Five Former Foreign Ministers for encouraging Belizeans to vote yes to the ICJ Belize was invaded militarily by Guatemala on May 15th 2015 and parts of Belize remains occupied.

This invasion, by the Guatemalan Armed Forces, occurred on the 15th May 2015 in the Sarstoon River and Guatemala’s Armed Forces remain in Belize’s sovereign territory. May 15 this year will make Four Years since this most unacceptable situation came into existence.

In all the 159 years of Guatemala and British dispute over Belize, Guatemala never invaded or occupied our country. Never.

Guatemala carried out this blatant act of aggression in open view of the Belize Government. Yet not one of the Five Former Foreign Ministers signed any declaration demanding Guatemala’s immediate withdrawal.

Neither was any declaration signed calling on the regional and international community to go with Belize to the United Nations and force Guatemala out of our sovereign territory.

Among the Five Former Foreign Ministers is the present Prime Minister. He passed a law making it a criminal offence for any Belizean to go into what was once a part of sovereign Belize. None of the other former Foreign Ministers condemned such an unprecedented action.

Instead, with a portion of Toledo under Guatemalan military occupation the Five Former Foreign Ministers dare to make a public spectacle by signing their simplistic declaration on Wednesday 9th of January, taking it upon themselves to dare tell Belizeans how to vote in the upcoming referendum. What arrogance.

The BTV strongly condemns this farce of the Former Foreign Ministers. None of them have any moral authority to attempt to influence the good people of Belize.

The BTV cannot overlook that seven years after Guatemala signed the Special Agreement agreeing to seek a peaceful settlement of its dispute at the ICJ, it turned and invaded southern Belize by military force. The Belize government and the Five Former Foreign Ministers not only failed to display their duty, honour and principles to their country but acquiesced in this blatant act of aggression.

The BTV does not trust the government of Guatemala and neither do we trust the government of Belize or the Five Former Foreign Minister.

Our trust is in God and the people of our beloved Belize.

They were swept into office by the skin of their teeth after purportedly bribing the electorate with dollar phones, corn flakes and rum.

However, last week their dolly-house fell apart.

That is because Deputy Mayor Franklin “Kranka” Polonio and Councilor Kevin Choc submitted their immediate resignations.

Information to Belize Times, is that Polonio had grown frustrated with the incompetent leadership at the council.

We note that he was first elected to office in 2015 with councilor turned mayor, Ashton McKenzie.

In both elections Polonio he collected more votes than McKenzie.

According to those in Polonio’s circle, he is more charismatic and involved in the community than Mckenize.

His followers believe that he is also more mature than the 20 something year old youth that he must call his Mayor.

Polonio’s supporters have even indicated that unlike Mayor Mckenzie who was busted with contraband, Polonio has a clean record.

His associates have indicated that he wants to be the Mayor of Punta Gorda town and he is not willing to wait.

He believes he is more competent for the task ahead.

Sources inside Polonio’s camp have also indicated that Mayor McKenzie has not built a single new street in a munici-

pality rocked by potholes.

Mayor McKenzie has been dubbed a sitting duck mayor who has not done anything to uplift the lives of Punta Gorda residents.

Polonio’s supporters say that it is his time now and things must be done either his way or the highway.

And so that is why he submitted his resignation along with Councilor Choc who too share his sentiments.

After word of their resignations surfaced the United Democratic Party scrambled into action to prevent a bye election.

That was when it became clear that the cause for the resignation was even deeper rooted.

In addition to Polonio’s selfish ambition, was the crushed ambition of Mayor McKenzie.

In a meeting with UDP Chairman, Alberto August, it was revealed that he wanted to run for the standard bearer convention held in Punta Gorda.

However, he was disallowed and was told to prove himself first at the municipal level.

With his tough headedness he threw his support behind a contender who lost the election to Dennis Garbutt who was supported by Polonio.

When Mckenzie’s candidate lost the convention and Polonio’s one it widened the rift between the two and McKenzie began to become afraid of his own shadow fearing that in the next election he would be kicked off the slate and replaced

by Polonio at the helm.

According to Chairman of the UDP, Alberto August, things are back to normal inside the PG town council.

But at this newspaper we know otherwise.

Remembrance of

JOSEPH EDMOND SAMPSON JR. (January 9th, 2019)

Paul: “Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice.” (Psalm 51:8) Rev. Father, family members, friends and associates; all love ones of our deceased brother, Joseph Edmund Sampson Jr. In this holy place this evening, we join hearts to celebrate the life of the man endearingly known to us by many names; Jun-Jun, Joey, Joe, Sam, Daddy, Grampa, Mr. Sam or Mr. Sampson, Sir, and judging from the multitude of persons he freely associated himself with, there must have been other names. To us, he is Uncle Joe, not because he is literally my uncle, but because he has earned that permanent honor within our family. Uncle Joe was more than a brother-in-law.

He was my brother and as a youth, he was my mentor. And let me safely declare that he was a genuine brother to all of us in the family.

In retrospect, we who know Uncle Joe will easily agree that he lived a colorful life; one in which there was never a dull moment. His life was full of vigor and vitality, adventure and courage, creativity and fun. He overcame any and all challenges that impeded his sense of life. He did not let life just happen to him, he lived his life. But central to his sensational life was God and service to those he found in need.

CYL: Reflecting on his life, his wife Lorna, my aunt and children Dawn and Donald, my cousins, describe him as determined; determined to do good by all; self-sacrificing, as he put the wellbeing of others before his own so many times, even if it meant that he found himself in trouble for others; and forgiving as his focus was on enjoying life and the short time we have on this earth.

His sister Rose submitted that “He made sure he had a relationship with all his family members. He was family oriented.”

His niece Desiree said: “my uncle Joe was passionate about education.

Due to that passion he assisted all his nieces and nephews in obtaining an education. Nothing was too much for him to give when it came to education.”

His baby sister Gloria commented: “my brother loved to eat. Once, I asked him if he was hungry and he said , “no Glo, but ah wa eat before ah get hungry.” Glo continued; “I will forever remember his last words to me on New year’s Eve , he said, “ Glo, ah Gwen ah wa come back.”

His niece Stacey said of him: “My uncle jun jun was kind , jovial and sociable. I could have depended on him to get anything done for me. No manner how busy he was, he found time to do business for his family. He would even volunteer to assist you if you had an issue. He was very positive. He often offered encouraging words to us.

It was always a pleasure to be around him. I will surely miss him.”

And finally, a close family friend encapsulated it all by saying: “Joe was even tempered and loved by

many” Paul: I had the privilege of first meeting Uncle Joe when I was just a kid of about 10 or 11 years old. He was about 16 or 17 I believe. That meeting took place while I was a priest celebrating mass. Well, let me clarify that. Remember I was only about 10, but I had convinced myself that I was a priest and had all rights to celebrate mass underneath my home in Punta Gorda.

And yes at age 10, I knew every part of the mass, including all the low utterances of the priest which are prayers not meant for the congregation to hear.

The words that I really did not know for sure, I simply made up. And yes we had soda biscuit communion and we did take collection which netted mostly small stones from my youthful penniless congregation.

So I think it was during an Easter holiday while I was saying mass, that this huge dusty guy with a white towel around his neck, crossed into my yard and into my mass space. I think he recognized the mass setting and he held his reverence. I appreciated that. It was collection time so he appropriately sat down. Of course we had ample seating since it was all on the ground. Well that one day, while my collection netted the usual pebbles from my congregation, I surely got a big donation from my new parishioner.

His offering was a shilling, twenty five cents. Since then, I knew he was special and that is where our relationship began. Of course I must tell you that the twenty five cents bought my entire congregation enough melcoche candy and I was even left with some pocket change.

That day, our usual after mass boxing match was lively, thanks to the sugar rush. But the benevolent stranger did not stay with us. He had disappeared upstairs. It was much later on I found out that this big guy was not only there for my well recited mass but he had, should I say, other motivations.

As time marched on, I would often encounter this big guy then known to me as Joe Sampson, at his home while I was on school vacations here in Dangriga. I recall playing bat and ricket under his organization, near the water tower in front of his home.

As we grew older, I believe by then I must have been 12 and 13 years old, I began spending summer vacations in Belize City. Joe was attending SJC Sixth Form. He would invite me to work with him on his many jobs. He and I made a great work team. We would be out at 4:00 am. (that is in the morning), to sweep the Muscle street drain in Belize city. For that task to-

gether we would earn $35 per week.

That was the weekly salary of a grown man maintaining a family in Belize City at the time. That task ended at 6 am, and then we were off to the south side of town to chop grass or dig drains on a task basis, again for the city council.

We would complete our task by 8 am.

But before we would leave the site, Joe would insist that we help an old man who always struggled, to finish his task. We never got a reward from that man, but we kept helping him on a daily basis. We would leave that scene by 8:30 am, having earned a second $35 dollars per week.

After having breakfast, we would proceed to either do billboard sign washing, school painting at Palotti High School or bottle washing at the Pepsi factory. Though we sometimes had to use some; should I say, creative arithmetic to justify the number of bottles we truly washed, we would easily earn another $50 per week at that job. In the evenings from 6 to 11 pm, I would end my day working at the Charger Beer factory as a line inspector. From that job I would bring home 3 – 4 unpasteurized beers each night, since I knew my brother Hervan, and Joe would be patiently waiting for their night cap. From that job we netted $25 per week.

Saturday’s weekend payday was great! We made sure to be at the City Council’s Pound Yard compound early to receive our pay. I can still hear the supervisor calling out the workers. He would call “Scavengers, South side, and among other names would be J. Sampson, and then drain diggers, north side, J. Sampson again would be called. Never mind the name scavengers and drain diggers. All the other men would be commenting with jealousy that Joe was earning 2 men’s pay at once. And when we combined our loot for the week, we were looking at real teamwork. Between us two, we were hauling pay worthy for 5 men.

No wonder my dear sister, his future wife, was especially happy to see us on Saturday afternoons, even with our dirty rubber boots. Mein we had fun!

But we always remembered church on Sunday.

And then a year or two went by, and lo and behold, Joe married my sister Lorna! That is why I will never apply for a watchman’s job. Unce Joe proved that Watchman was not my calling.

I know that Uncle Joe would appreciate me at this time thanking some key people to whom he has always been grateful for their role in seeing him through during those sixth form days in Belize city. In this regard I mention Joyce and Herbert Gentle who provided Joe with lodging. I also wish to mention Brother Loyd ?? of the Baptist church in Belize City, who provided him with temporary housing.

So in the interest of time we must now give you a snapshot of Uncle Joe’s colorful life.

CYL: Joseph Edmund Sampson Jr., Uncle Joe, was born on September 13, 1955, the second child of Joseph Sampson Sr. and Inez Sampson both deceased. He was also pre-deceased by his brother, Wilfred.

Uncle Joe was reared in Dangriga. He Graduated from Sacred Heart Primary School and Stann Creek High School. He then earned a Government Scholarship to attend St. Johns 6th Form in Belize City. The fruit of sixth form was another scholarship. This

19 time an open scholarship to the University of the West Indies, Jamaica, where he obtained a Bachelors and Master’s degree in History.

In 1975 he married my aunt, Lorna Morgan-Sampson. Their marriage bore two wonderful children, Dawn Sampson- Nunez and Donald Sampson.

Uncle Joe was an educator. He taught at Claver College Punta Gorda, St. John’s College Evening Division, University of Belize, Ecumenical College, Julian Cho Technical High School, St. Catherine’s Academy, Galen University, Holy Childhood High School and Holy Childhood 6th Form in Jamaica and Tutored at University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. He also served as a resource person to correct CXC papers.

Uncle Joe was an author. His latest book entitled A BELIZEAN DAWN forms part of his legacy in which he chronicled his struggles with mental illness in his early young life; a struggle which demonstrated his resilience, strength and determination. This is a struggle that thought our family not to give up even in the face of the most daunting challenges in life.

Uncle Joe was a community leader, and a politician who served as Mayor of Dangriga. For a few years he also served as the Neighborhood Watch Coordinator for the Police Department.

Channel 5 in Belize city will miss his election commentary in future elections. Uncle Joe also had his input as a facilitator in the ICJ discussion that is engulfing Belize as we speak.

He is a Great father who, along with his wife, ensured that his children were reared well and given a solid educational foundation. His grandchildren were his world. – Saturday mornings he made sure to take them on walks to BTL park.

This Christmas he told his family on Christmas Day that this was the happiest Christmas of his life. So he died happy and at peace.

Paul: Sunset came for Uncle Joe at age 63, on January 3rd, 2019. A life worth living.

Brothers and sisters, a great report in a eulogy does not suggest perfection but then again, show me a perfect man and I will show you God made man, only in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

CYL: He is survived by his wife - Lorna Sampson; children - Dawn Nunez, and Donald Sampson; daughter in-law- Carolyn Sampson, son inlaw- Ralph Nunez Jr.; grandchildren - Diroune Sampson, Keema Centeno, Kayan Sampson, Kauvan Sampson, Donald Sampson Jr. Laila Nunez, Kayla Nunez, and Ymari Sampson; Sisters – Cynthia Sampson, Rose Sampson, Lorain Sampson, Gloria Sampson; Brothers – Nelson Lambert, Robert Petillo, William Sampson, Stephen Sampson, James Sampson, and Vincent Sampson, nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Paul: When his story is told brothers and sisters, it will be said that Joseph Edmund Sampson Jr. lived, loved and served. He won and he lost. He was Noble in victory and humble in defeat. We were all blessed by his life. Let us pray that his soul remains happy in the presence of his savior. We shall meet him again in the life of the world to come.

May Uncle Joe’s soul rest in Peace.

2019 – A World Of Lies, Hope, Technology and the Unknown

It’s a time we usually get to look back on ourselves, assess our successes, our failures and expectations to make a resolution for the year ahead. As we move into the New Year, it is always with new resolutions and hope. We determine which direction we go, considering the realities and the necessary steps needed to push ourselves forward . Getting there is never an easy task ,especially when there are so many goals one would like to achieve coupled with high expectations.

As we look back in the year 2018, it was not an easy year for anyone in Belize, some may have wished it came to a quick end as soon as it began with all the difficulties & hardship it brought.

Everyone expects the New Year to be new blessings, right? This could not be said for Belize, especially since we are at a point in time that seemingly we have never been before, plagued by so many un-addressed issues and a government that could care less. Many of these issues could be overcome by a competent government with vision, intellectual sobriety and political will .This government must first start by overcoming their ten years of lies and deception in order to find solutions.

With the explosion of technology available via the Internet and the growing number of Belizeans who already have access to it, the exchange of thoughts, opinions and information that is available from the world is enough to get Belize moving in the direction of hope and prosperity.

Belizeans are using Facebook and whatsapp as their key medium of communication, which is a whole new level of exposure in information. It is an eye-opener for

personal or business ventures.

We are at a point where even the common man could Google information on any issue. One could query different opinions and come to a satisfactory conclusion about an issue, event or idea.

Years gone by, lies were propagated through various mediums and some people may have accepted those lies and believe it was the absolute truth. Now with the ability to access world- wide web, a wide source of information on any issue is at your finger tip; people are slowly overcoming fake information and it is becoming increasingly difficult for people to spread lies and trick people, especially regarding political convictions.

A New Year should be a sign of hope and betterment for our society in all aspects.

Hope is something that is attached to our hearts and minds, hope is what drives us and motivated us to take a risk to overcome challenges and most of all be able to put a grip on the future without fear. Belize is at a point where adversities are greater than ever before, however, with hope everything becomes possible even in the most difficult of circumstances. This is not to say it’s going to be easy to overcome many of the issues we are currently experiencing but at least there’s a blue print and a road map to help us take that first step towards betterment. Hope, when realized provides us with a superior standard of living individually or collectively.

Realizing many of our hopes and aspirations requires having the audacity to challenge the unknown which could bring about something new.

Belize is entering an unknown fate coupled with many issues, but the New Year gives the opportunity as a person and as a nation the chance to maximize our efforts and take that first step towards a positive change. All it takes is a leap of fate into the unknown.

Primeramente quiero, por este medio, emitirle un saludo muy cordial a nuestro Líder del Partido Unido del Pueblo, al Honorable John Briceño.

Asimismo quiero agradecerle a nuestro Líder que haya venido hasta nuestra aldea para conversar con los partidarios e informarnos sobre el tema del reclamo de Guatemala sobre Belice.

Fue una reunión muy interesante donde todos salimos más informados sobre el tema y donde todos tuvimos la oportunidad de hacer preguntas y comentarios. En fin, todos salimos muy satisfechos con la discusión ya que esto nos dio la confianza de tomar una decisión en cómo votar para el referéndum. Por muchos días se comentó en la aldea la humildad, amabilidad y cordura que nuestro Líder demostró durante toda la sesión y al conversar con los aldeanos.

Ayer cuando supimos aquí en la aldea del comunicado de prensa que salió de la oficina del Líder del Partido nos pusimos muy contentos. Esto es porque nos dimos cuenta que nuestro Líder no solo consulto con su gente en apariencia sino que fue genuino el acto de escuchar al pueblo. El Líder se dio cuenta que la mayoría de su gente no están convencidos de llevar el reclamo de Guatemala sobre Belice a la Corte Internacional de Justicia. ¡Él se dio cuenta que hay mucha incertidumbre sobre el tema y que nuestra gente se está decidiendo por el NO! Estamos muy orgullosos de nuestro Líder que haya decidido estar con el pueblo. Un buen Líder siempre escucha y elije estar con el pueblo y así el pueblo siempre estará con él. Adelante Honorable John Briceño siga usted estando con el pueblo y el pueblo siempre lo apoyara y jamás lo defraudara.

Dear Editor, I live in Punta Gorda Town and I’ve been a supporter of the PUP, not necessarily John Briceño from the time I was old enough to vote. I was a fan of Rt. Hon George Cadle Price but since he left us I’ve really not taken much for the Party or its leadership.

When I first heard about the ICJ Referendum I immediately thought about George Price and almost out of reflex I said, “Hell NO!” That became my position. Then I heard John Briceño say YES to the ICJ, but that he would support each of us in the party voting our conscience. I had no problem with that but wanted to know what our party’s official position was: Yes or NO? In a way I was hopeful when I was told by Hon Mike Espat that the PL would be doing a listening tour before announced the party’s official position.

I personally wanted to let him hear my view as to why I was against going to the ICJ. He began his tour in the South.

Nuff respect for that. The South is normally last in Barrow’s books. I met the Party Leader at the Central Park in PG. I was able to talk to him freely and even though I was a bit aggressive, he listened with intent and respect. ‘This man large’ I said in my mind. He reminds me of George Price. I followed behind him as he went into the PG market hugged and greeted most if not all the vendors and listened to them as they gave their views on the ICJ matter. I thought to myself, ‘What a man we have for a leader, emulating the Great George Price.’

Hon John Briceño, you left a deep impression on me on your visit to PG. When I listened to the news on Tuesday evening as your Press Release on the Belize/Guatemala issue was read, I told my wife, with tears in my eyes, “Here is a true leader.” Thank God for you sir.

I wish you all success this new year and I am certain that you will become our next Prime Minister. Your compassion, character and persona spells the traits of a great leader. I am now most proud to have you as my Party Leader and I want to assure you that the South is with you in this very important decision.
