book where they post daily pictures of themselves posing with assorted Area Representatives and Standard Bearers and delegates. Both have made catchy videos and songs, both suddenly have all the answers to fix what ails the country and neither seems to be doing the jobs they were hired to do by the Belizean people.

And both, with the assistance of those that support them, have attacked the other mercilessly in what seems to be a no-holds barred feeding frenzy for leadership. Except that what is quite clear to the Belizean people is that neither is qualified to be leader of a panades shop, much less a country. And what is also quite clear is that based on what is being revealed, neither of the candidates may make it to Convention, and if either of them makes it and wins, the UDP will never make it past the General Elections.

Saldivar has been the most vicious, aided by the son of the Prime Minister, Jamal Shyne Barrow. Shyne’s Facebook page, Associated Belize Press, has launched an all-out attack against Faber. On that page, Faber has been accused of having received bribes from Armenian American Lev Dermen. On that page, and also during an interview with Shyne, the Saldivar camp has thrown out allegations that Faber also received monies from Mason. Shyne has

said on national television that he understands Mason gave Faber $200,000. There have been attacks against Faber based on allegations in the Auditor General’s Report that he may have been playing a little loosely with Sports Council cash, and also, of course, the usual attacks based on Faber’s history of drinking and beating up women.

The Saldivar camp has even gone so far, on Shyne’s Facebook page, of attacking Faber for his always contentious stance against the teachers of Belize.

Faber may be young and immature, and certainly no match for Saldivar’s brand of vicious, but he has been attacking for all he’s worth. It hasn’t been too hard for him, since Saldivar has given the entire nation enough ammunition to end him. In fact, just today the Belize Times received a copy of an article from the Salt Lake Tribune which states that “Jacob Kingston also is expected to testify about how he and Dermen bribed a Belize security minister named John Saldivar.

According to documents released before the trial and discussion from lawyers during a Jan. 13 hearing, Jacob Kingston will testify Dermen was making cash payments to Saldivar and that Jacob Kingston later took over making those payments.”

Aside from the recent scandal with Dermen, Saldivar will never get past his cozy relationship with convicted killer William Danny Mason. Faber’s camp has made much of the fact that Saldivar and Mason were best friends, drinking partners, business partners and there are even allegations that they were much more. In fact, Faber’s camp has start re-circulating a grotesque picture of a man purported to be Saldivar in a bed purported to be that of Mason. He was nude. Enough said.

And there is so much more, as both camps continue to air each other’s dirty linens, and they are really very dirty. Belizeans may have known that the UDP was corrupt, but they are only now learning just how corrupt.

Peyrefitte suggested that inaction is the best scenario for Belize. The UDP are experts at inaction: New River, Dengue, Anti-retroviral meds, Cane Farmers, Tourism, BTL, BWS, BEL, Longsworth, Castro, Salazar, Vega, Elrington, Pablo, and the list goes on and on. Such inaction would purportedly allow the court case to move on and then we would see the evidence.

This is smack vintage UDP lackadaisical incompetence. Of course, the UDP is just buying time. Why hurry give the Belizean body politic an election when the UDP has a nice convention and more months of the fleecing of Belize?

So Peyrefitte goes on TV and says that he had NOT seen the letter that Kareem sent to his government. BUT nevertheless he goes on and on commenting on the contents of the letter he started off by saying he has not seen. Idiocy.

ally, exactly what did they do. Trials can go on and on…it is disingenuous for Peyrefitte to stipulate that if he were to request it via his counterparts in the USA that it would take longer. How does he know that? Has Belize ever made use of that agreement with the USA in a situation like this? Again, for someone who had not read Kareem Musa’s letter, Peyrefitte had enough deflections lined up.

That is all the UDP will do from now until the time Peyrefitte officially becomes the Chairman of the Opposition Party, toe the line. We have said it too often but here we go again. Speaker of the House, Senator, Attorney General, and Chairman of the UDP all achieved in unelected fashion. Michael Peyrefitte does not get it; not even the UDP people want him. Even the flightless Superman beat him for Standard Bearer, imagine that.

So as Belizeans have to bear with incompetence and a recession, the UDP is milking Belize dry. The outcome is clear; the future of the UDP is no more.

Faber a Thorn In BNTU’s Side Licence, 120(times 2) improbable workshop hours(called Continuing Professional Development), and a sly Financing formula destined to strip the grant-aided high-achieving schools of funds to give to Faber-controlled schools like Julian Cho High Technical School(JCH) that is still holding the principal post for Simeon Coc, a UDP delegate, the BNTU has been at perpetual odds with the MoE. On the Coc point, if the TSC really was functioning JCH would already have a principal that the students need.

This time around the Faber disguised as the MoE is attempting to stifle the teacher’s ability to wage industrial action. He is attempting to amend the ability of the MoE to replace a teacher in an emergency. This is basically trying to handcuff the teachers.

Also, even though most teachers got licensed or, at least, provisionally licensed there is still no increase in respect. If teachers are more qualified than 12 years ago would that not require a greater respect if not in the salary at least in policy?

But Faber only sees it one way… teachers need to work more with the same or less resources, less Easter and Christmas time.

Student populations increase but not the level of subsidy. His formula for high school is not working. These schools are getting less money than 12 years ago. Faber pats himself on the shoulder by saying that education gets the lion’s share of the annual budget. He does not see that there is no efficiency nor efficacy.

Faber does not learn— the essence of education. He does not notice that even his UDP leadership dream is being literally gouged from his very being by a candidate that is horrible and openly reckless.

But, maybe Faber is incompetent at being a competitor as well. The entire UDP reeks of incompetence.

The Belize National Teacher’s Union deserves their seat at the table and NOTHING should be signed until there is FULL acceptance. There should be no dictatorial 2012 Education Act recurrence.

Faber… maybe you can walk away with a pinch of dignity.

CANE FARMERS BITTER TREATMENT Last year, the north of the country experienced a bitter drought that is still being felt today. The lack of rainfall stunted the growth of most of the cane plantations and production is expected to be low this cane season. The farmers already had to cope with a Christmas without any income. They had to deal with a promise of a meagre financial help that never did materialize and is now an insult. Nature decided to offer some intense rains early this year making the sugar roads impassable and in a state of urgent need for repair.

Well, UDP style…money is supposedy allocated but these never arrived to the sugar roads. Where could the monies be?

Sweeping It Clean

T

hings certainly are heating up as we head into the final stretch of the race to see who emerges victorious in their bid to play the lead role of Ali Baba in the final act of what can best be described as the greatest tragedy in the annals of Belizean History. The end is in sight, and the fallout of the race has been spectacular! The thinly veiled animosity and the hurling of shade and threats is very unbecoming of sitting ministers and those others who aspire to become parliamentarians. The whole ordeal, however, has proven rather informative with the tabling of new reports from the Auditor General. Back in 2015 when Belizeans were promised “the best is yet to come” we certainly could never “imagine the possibilities.” The current administration was elected largely on their biggest promise to curb and extinguish corruption.

The promise was to “Enact bills to enforce transparency and accountability in Public Financial Management.” Like most of those campaign promises this one too has been gathering dust on the shelves. The UDP has enacted ZERO bills to enforce accountability and transparency. In fact they have bent the rules and actually enacted legislature to cover their muddy tracks. Just a few months prior the 2015 elections the UDP rushed the PetroCaribe Loan Motion. This loan motion allowed the GOB absolute power to borrow and spend money from PetroCaribe funds without the approval of the House of Representatives. This motion is in direct contravention of the Finance and Audit Act and also validated any and all spending as from 1st September 2012 which means that over 142M in loans and expenses that were made illegally without the proper consultation and were legitimized in one fell stroke of the pen. Fast forward to November 2019 and we learn of the $100M “slippage” the Financial Secretary is forced to admit happened under his not so careful watch. The supplementary budgets for these monies are just a bit over seven years late in being filed. Belizeans have yet to find out how and where these monies were spent and who ultimately benefited from preferential contracts. In addition, the GOB has spent most of this term without a Contractor General to oversee and ensure a fair and equitable bidding process.

Instead Borrow and the UDP signed a statutory instrument that allows CEOs to approve contracts of up to fifty thousand dollars. Tenders are by invitation in the event that they are over fifty thousand dollars. This has been the method of circumventing the established bidding and tendering process to confer choice multi-million dollar contracts to preferred contractors, cronies and friends and family.

These contracts have resulted in inferior projects that have little to do with the purported benefits to the wider Belizean society. In fact they are suspect, and seen more as prizes in return for generous campaign contributions and family retirement funds. The UDP is far from enforcing transparency and accountability in order to eradicate corruption. In the eloquent words of Teresita Castellanos as a matter of fact encouraged an “entrenched culture of corruption and hustling; milking the cow…from the very top to the very bottom of the ladder.” The scandals at the Immigration Department, again brought to light through the hard work of the Auditor General, have sparked only momentary embarrassment to the UDP. If Senator Salazar cannot be bothered to give us a report on the findings of a yearlong inquiry, we cannot expect any reforms to be forthcoming. Already the Penner issue was not investigated even when a Writ of Mandamus was ordered by the Courts. The original “hotbed of Corruption” which is the Lands Department is also another sore point for Belizeans. After so many land scams and shady dealings involving the then minister and his family, we see him ready himself for another round of elections. Its business as usual at the UDP headquarters. They have forgotten and put behind all the empty rhetoric they spewed, they have put behind them all the scandals. They make ready for a new general election, a new leader with the same old tricks and the same set of empty promises and lies. They cling to the hope that the memory of the Belizean electorate is short, and that we will not remember, and that we will forgive and we will forget. They seek to wipe the slate clean with their new leaders, but the dirty UDP forget that only a brand new broom sweeps clean!

as cosas ciertamente se están calentando a la medida que entramos a la recta final de la carrera para ver quién sale victorioso en su intentona de interpretar el papel principal de Ali Baba en el acto final de lo que mejor se puede describir como la mayor tragedia en los anales de la historia de Belice. El final está a la vista, y las consecuencias de la carrera ha sido espectacular! La animosidad apenas encubierta y el intercambio de acusaciones de deshonestidad y amenazas es muy impropio de los ministros en función y de aquellos otros que aspiran a convertirse en parlamentarios. Sin embargo, todo esa terrible experiencia ha resultado bastante informativo con la presentación de nuevos informes del Auditor General. En 2015, cuando se prometió a los beliceños “lo mejor está para venir”, ciertamente nunca podríamos “imaginar las posibilidades”. La administración actual fue elegida en gran medida por su gran promesa de frenar y extinguir la corrupción. La promesa fue “promulgar proyectos de ley para hacer cumplir la transparencia y la rendición de cuentas en la gestión de las finanzas públicas”. Como la mayoría de esas promesas de campaña, esa también ha estado acumulando polvo en los estantes.El UDP no ha decretado ningún proyecto de ley para hacer cumplir la rendición de cuentas y la transparencia.

De hecho, han roto las reglas y han promulgado legislatura para cubrir sus movidas sucias. Unos meses antes de las elecciones de 2015, el UDP apresuró la moción de préstamo de PetroCaribe, esta moción de préstamo permitió al GOB (gobierno de Belice, siglas en inglés) el poder absoluto para prestar y gastar dinero de los fondos de PetroCaribe sin la aprobación de la Cámara de Representantes. Esta moción que contraviene directamente la Ley de Finanzas y Auditoría también validó todos y cada uno de los gastos a partir del 1 de septiembre de 2012, lo que significa que más de 142 millones en préstamos y gastos que se hicieron ilegalmente y sin la consulta adecuada fueron legitimadas de un solo plumazo. Avancemos rápidamente a noviembre de 2019 y nos enteramos del “desajuste” de 100M que el Secretario de Finanzas se vio en obligación de admitir que sucedió bajo su no tan atenta vigilancia. Los presupuestos suplementarios para estos fondos tienen poco más de siete años de retraso en ser presentados. Los beliceños aún no han averiguado cómo y dónde se gastaron estos fondos y quién finalmente se benefició de los contratos preferenciales. Además, el GOB ha pasado la mayor parte de este mandato sin que un Contratista General supervisara y garantizara un proceso de licitación justo y equitativo. En su lugar, Borrow y el UDP firmaron un instrumento legal que permite a los CEOs (directores ejecutivos, siglas en inglés) aprobar contratos de hasta cincuenta mil dólares. Las ofertas son por invitación en el caso del que sean más de cincuenta mil dólares. Este ha sido el método para eludir el proceso de licitación y concurso público establecido para conferir contratos multimillonarios a contratistas preferidos, compinches y amigos y familiares. Estos contratos han dado lugar a proyectos inferiores que poco tienen que ver con los supuestos beneficios para la sociedad beliceña en general. De hecho, son sospechosos, y se ven más como premios a cambio de generosas contribuciones de campaña y fondos de jubilación familiar.El UDP está lejos de hacer cumplir la transparencia y la rendición de cuentas para erradicar la corrupción. En las elocuentes palabras de Teresita Castellanos, de hecho, el UDP alentó una “cultura arraigada de corrupción y chanchullos; ordeñando a la vaca... desde la cumbre al fondo de la escala.” Los escándalos en el Departamento de Inmigración que una vez más salieron a la luz a través del arduo trabajo del Auditor General, sólo han provocado una vergüenza momentánea al UDP. Si no se puede molestar al senador Salazar para darnos el informe sobre las conclusiones de una investigación de un año de duración, no podemos esperar que se avecinan reformas. Ya, el asunto Penner no fue investigado incluso cuando un escrito de Mandamus fue ordenado por los tribunales. Después de tantas estafas de terrenos y transacciones turbias que involucran al entonces ministro y a su familia, lo vemos listo para otra ronda de elecciones.

Las cosas siguen como de costumbre en la sede del UDP. Han olvidado y puesto detrás de toda la retórica vacía que vomitaban, han puesto detrás de ellos todos los escándalos. Se preparan para una nueva elección general, un nuevo líder con los mismos viejos trucos y el mismo conjunto de promesas y mentiras vacías.

Se aferran a la esperanza del que la memoria del electorado de Belice sea corta, y que no recordaremos, y que perdonaremos y olvidaremos. Buscan hacer borrón y cuenta nueva con sus nuevos líderes, pero el sucio UDP se olvida que sólo una nueva escoba barre limpio!

Corrupt Bones

John Saldivar is in hot, hot water. The man who says that he exchanged texts with our chubby Minister of National Security on behalf of the Minister’s good, good buddy Lev will take the stand in a matter of days. There is confirmation of texts between Saldivar and that man who will take the stand, the same man who talks about US$25000 being paid monthly to a UDP Minister for political favours – the same man who says he personally wired funds to the account of another UDP Minister or official. We know, because those in the Faber camp are only too willing to share, that Cabinet has been in shambles since the allegations came out. We’d go biblical and say Cabinet has been a depiction of the Last Supper, except there ain’t no Jesus in that crew. Every last one of them is scum. We notice that John has dodged the media for months now. Facebook has become his comfort zone. We also understand that Saldivar recently proclaimed that he dah God pikni. We are told the Vatican has issued a release disputing that allegation, but we haven’t seen it yet. There’s a low-key betting pool happening in the UDP. Will Saldivar make it to Convention, or will he be sent straight to jail without passing GO. Based on what we’ve been hearing about what’s going to be revealed very soon, we’d advise that you put your money on the latter. Just some friendly advice.

Daddy issues What’s up with Jamal these days? Well actually it’s been a while now that he’s had a hard-on for Patrick Faber, though not in the literal sense, as far as we know. Stranger things have happened. Anyway. Dean Barrow’s son Jamal Shyne Moses Bin Laden Barrow has issues with Patrick, and we’re recommending an intervention. We know Jamal has had daddy issues dating way back when his pops pretended he didn’t exist.

No secret there. He has made outrageously bad songs venting about his deadbeat dad, aka Dean Barrow. But let’s move past that. Why is Jamal attacking Patrick like that? On the street, in every forum and even using his Facebook page, ASSociated Belize Press to accuse Patrick of all manner of things. Sir, we take issue with that. We like Patsy very much, so don’t you be saying all those terrible, true things. Yes we hear Patrick gets violent under the influence of the spirits. But we’re working with him on that. He just has to understand and accept that all men are not created equal in some areas, and then he’ll be more courteous with opposite sex… to compensate. We’re sure of it. It’s not like he goes around cutting off people’s heads or anything like that. We got eyes on you Jamal. Go pay your damned bills.

ASSociated Belize Press The fight for leadership in the UDP has us up late at night, popcorn and coke in hand. It’s nasty and disgusting and distasteful and revealing and hilarious. All the good stuff. We love it. Saldivar, through Jamal’s FB page, is accusing Faber of being in bed with Dermen, of misappropriating money from the Ministry of Sports, or being involved in all manner of things, and of course for beating up women. Faber is lashing back, pointing out that Shyne is a convicted criminal, and also reminding

Saldivar about Mason and of course, reminding the chubby fellow that he (Faber) isn’t the one in the spotlight for allegedly taking bribes from Dermen. It is absolutely beautiful. The thing is – most of the allegations from both sides are true. They know each other. Saldivar and Faber are Cabinet colleagues. They know each other’s dirty deeds. As our friend Boots would say, don’t get distracted by the mudslinging – pay attention to the mud.

Dead Man Walking Have you all noticed that old man Barrow has a Michael Jackson impersonation going on? We’ve noticed for a while now that he’s been getting whiter and whiter and whiter, like he’s bleaching his skin even. What the hell is up with that? Anyway, we digress. In an interview recently, Barrow stated with his usual sincerity (insert LOL) that the IDB has sent a letter to Imer Hernandez telling him how wonderful he is, and how his work is so magnificent, and how he’s such an amazing contractor. Smelling like roses, Barrow said in that interview. He was right about there being a smell, but it’s not roses. More like BULLSHIT. The thing is that nobody else has seen this letter from the IDB. The PUP who asked for the audit of Imer hasn’t been given any such letter. We reached out to a few source in the IDB who knew nothing about this letter. Our buddy Imer, the best piece of crap contractor that ever lived, hasn’t come forward with this letter. WE KNOW that if there was such a letter, it would have been made public. Note to the PM – just because you say something is so, doesn’t mean it is. And for a while now whenever Barrow opens his mouth, there’s this stink – and that’s all we’re gonna say about that.

1. Will the Prime Minister please instruct the Attorney General to acquaint himself with the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) signed between Belize and the United States of America?

2. Will the Minister of Agriculture please inform Belizeans what he is doing to assist with the rehabilitation of Sugar Roads in Orange Walk South and will he say if the UDP Standard bearer for Orange Walk South, an unelected official was given any say over how government funds were allocated for upgrade of sugar roads?

3. Will the Minister of Tourism please provide the nation with an update on the water and electricity situation in Caye Caulker, will he say if a permanent solution has been found to the crisis which caused tourists to leave the country in disgust because of the January black out and water shortage in Caye Caulker?

4. Will the Prime Minister please inform the nation if his Minister of Foreign Affairs Sedi Elrington, did at any moment prior to his recent interview with Channel 5, disclosed to him that John Saldivar had approached him to “see what else could be done to get Lev Derman some kind of diplomatic or counselor appointment?”

There are reports that the Minister of National Disgrace, John Saldivar has been spotted on Facebook. While he travels the country taking pictures and ‘incentivizing’ UDP delegates, the body count has started to rise in the country.

Just as it has done every single year under Saldivar’s blind leadership, crime continues unabated, the streets run red with blood and law-abiding citizens are forced to accept that we live in a country where any minute could be our last.

As we go to press, a woman is missing and is believed dead. She was a tourist who planned to invest in the country. She went on what should have been a pleasure-trip to Rendezvous Caye, fast becoming a destination of choice for tourists. She disappeared without a trace. Another black eye for the country, as international media ran rampant with the news. And the Ministry of National Disgrace said nothing.

ing in some part of the country, at taxpayer’s expense of course.

As we go to press, the nation has been told that the bodies of two persons found burnt to death in a truck in the south of Belize remain unidentified.

We are told that there will need to be DNA testing to determine the identities, but there are no DNA testing facilities in Belize. So the families of the two person murdered will have no closure for at least a year, until the results come back. And even then, they may get closure but no justice because the country does not have the ability to properly process evidence to link killers to crimes.

The Minister of National Disgrace has said nothing. He has been too busy, campaigning all over the country.

Almost every day there are reports of another murder, another person missing and presumed dead, another store robbed, another home invasion.

Belize has made it on the advisory lists of every country whose people visit. All are advised to exercise extreme caution because there is a state of lawlessness in the nation. The criminals have more guns, resources and contacts than the Police. There is corruption at every single level. And the Minister of National Disgrace has said and done nothing. He knows why.

Saldivar has been trying his very best to convince the UDP delegates, by whatever means necessary, that he is the best candidate for UDP leader.

Suddenly, after 12 years in office, John Saldivar has all the answers to fix everything wrong with this country. He is a senior UDP Minister, and has been one of the primary policy-makers in the UDP for 12 years in Cabinet and did nothing.

Barrow: When Ignorance is Bliss, Lie For some time now, Dean O. Barrow seems to have fled into Never, Never Land to imagine the possibility of what three successful terms could look like.

Publicly there is a distasteful denial of any corruption or any wrongdoing that rears its ugly head. Even some UDPs might wonder where is PM’s halo and be bemused as to why his nose grows each time he utters nonsensicals and incomprehensibles. The PM's negligent denial exposes his optic focus on the factually guilty UDP. The guilt judged by who should be his people simply sails over/under his radar.

I hear it's a beautiful place was his famous assertion uttered as he denied knowledge of Sanctuary Bay following the US-based FTC exposure of the largest international real estate fraud case.

When Pablo Marin tried to skim a couple of millions to build a warehouse as was exposed by a leaked document from the PM's Finance Ministry, the PM didn't know. Even lowly Pablo babbled that the PM didn't even know that they spoke about it.

At the hallowed National Assembly, PM made a great case for rescinding of the Right Honourable title when he accused George Cadle Price of signing an agreement at a time in July 1998 when MOST LIKELY he, Oliver Barrow, signed it. Infamy... this was sort of quelled as he sort of apologized for this grave error.

In August of 2019, Dean Barrow read off a bill where approximately 40 thousand dollars was being written off in a failed attempt to get a UDP homegrown forensic scientist. The young man who doubled as Barrow's Cabinet Secretary's son decided to stay in the

USA and default on his loan. Most of the loan was paid in December 2019.

Missing was a few thousands of principal and interest. Normal people would need to pay even the last cent. Oh...

Barrow did NOT know who the Perdomo he was reading a write-off bill for was.

In the early 2020, Kingston Biofuel Fraud case in Utah, Barrow claims he has no idea who the minister/officials being named in the court document.

Dean Barrow's historic denial of culpability is the debacle of a Belize as a sanctuary of peace, tranquility, growth and promise. We will hopefully never again witness in Belize such rank incompetence and corruption.

The PUP and John Briceño have pledged to revive the hope and return Belize as a shining beacon in Central America welcoming the Caribbean and the World.

Castro-Willoughby Concoction: Jumoke was Abused?

January 28, 2020 There are no-brainers and then there are no-brain owners. On December 20, the PSU, the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition and every sane person condemned in NO uncertain terms the Jumoke Castro vile post horribly threatening Pastor Wade and family. The Public Service Union (PSU) chimed in since the young Castro is paid with taxpayers dollars as a part of the Belize Tax Service(BTS). The PSU at that time made a blanket condemnation of this issue and any other issue of violence against women.

In the past week, a deadline imposed on Castro passed. He was supposed to file a report in explanation of the post to the BTS who had made a

move earlier this year to place him on administrative leave.

The UDP bullhorn embedded in the PSU in the person of Jackie Willoughby now sends out a release that smells on unilateralism on her part. Her release basically says that Jumoke Castro did nothing wrong under the PSU regulations and that the BTS had erred in filing the administrative leave. According to her, the actions bordered at abusive.

It is easy to say here that at least it only bordered. Castro’s post had all the stench of UDP entitlement. By jove, where does the UDP get horrid novel ideas which go way beyond coronavirus virulence.

The global economy will inevitably turn to solar and other carbon-free energy sources, the only question is whether we can transition quickly enough to avoid a climate catastrophe.

LONDON (Project Syndicate) — There is no doubt that by the year 2100, the world will enjoy abundant cheap zero-carbon energy. Coal will be confined to museums, and oil and gas use will be dramatically reduced. Technological progress makes that inevitable, even if unassisted by government policy.

But to prevent potentially catastrophic climate change, a zero-carbon global economy must be achieved by mid-century. That, too, is possible, but only with strategic vision and strong policy support.

Electricity more efficient Electricity will dominate the future global energy system. Currently, it accounts for only 20% of final energy demand, with direct fossil-fuel use still dominant in transport, heating, and heavy industry. But most economic activities can be powered by electricity, and many will be far more efficient once electrified.

If governments adopt bold policies to help accelerate the production of clean electricity, the world could build a zero-carbon economy fast enough to limit climate change to a manageable degree. But without such measures, a zero-carbon economy will come much too late.

For example, internal-combustion engines typically turn 60% to 80% of all the energy they use into wasted heat, and only 20% to 40% into kinetic energy to drive the vehicle. Electric engines, by contrast, are over 90% efficient. Moreover, they are so much simpler to produce that within five years the cost savings on engines will offset the cost of batteries, making electric vehicles cheaper than diesel or gasoline cars.

Similarly, electric heat pumps can deliver more than three kilowatt-hours of residential heating for only one kilowatt of energy input; no gas boiler could deliver more than 0.9 kWh for the same input.

Although battery-powered electric engines will play a growing role in short-distance aviation and shipping, batteries will be too heavy to power long-distance flights or intercontinental shipping for several decades yet.

Ammonia and hydrogen But ship engines could burn ammonia rather than fuel oil — and ammonia can be a zero-carbon fuel if it is made from hydrogen produced by electrolyzing water, using electricity generated from renewable sources.

In addition, synthetic jet fuel can be made from hydrogen and carbon dioxide extracted from the air. Hydrogen, whether used as a fuel or a key chemical input, will also play a major role in the decarbonization of heavy industrial sectors such as steel and chemicals.

Without assuming any fundamental technological breakthroughs, we could certainly build by 2050 a global economy in which electricity met 65% to 70% of final energy demand, and hydrogen, ammonia, or synthetic fuel met a further 12% to 15%.

Bioenergy and fossil fuels would then need to meet only about 20% of total energy use — and applying carbon capture to this greatly reduced fossil-fuel use could then ensure a truly zero-carbon economy.

Moreover, such widespread electrification would deliver huge environmental benefits, eliminating the pollution, noise, and unwanted or wasted heat inevitably produced by burning fossil fuels in vehicles, gas boilers, and industrial processes.

UDP INFAMY: LAND MISDEEDS

Belize has multiple Santa Cruz villages, but the one that recently suffered the wrath of the lame duck UDP is the Santa Cruz in Stann Creek District. Going against the grain, this village stood up for their rights against the monster called the UDP that has looked into a blue crystal ball and desperation has set in; they in the UDP are on a countdown to terminal implosion.

After 12 years of three recessions, umpteenth corruption examples, a couple of rigged elections and infamy galore, the UDP are running around begging for their electoral life whilst using corrupt ways, especially in lands. As the UDP days approach zero, we can reminisce on their prized most corrupt ministry. And the winner is…lands? Lets reminisce…

1. UDP Standard Bearers dubbed scaretakers have powers higher than a representatives as they issue "recommendations" for their constituents for land leases and promises for more. A PUP duly-elected representative recommendation is worth nothing to the UDP land office... OJ, Dirty Dee, Ivan have been caught red handed in this cookie jar.

2. In Belmopan, streets and parks were sold off and, in one instance, lots were sold in obvious campaign deliberations for 1000 a pop. Yes, this is the same Belmopan where that money hardly gets a student a month’s rent.

Khalid and Saldivar went dumb.

3. Patt doing his best rendition to be a clone of Vega, has become the mobile driver for a lands department that is cutting as many corners to help ONLY their base to get land. They are faking to be taking land to everyone but no...it is for UDP. This is all in an attempt to win some votes. Word to the wise...NAVCO. Their mobile hotbed didn't work for the Village Councils 2019 and this massive distribution of applications will not help a UDP who is a confessed corrupt government--ask, Dean, Patrick, King, OJ, Patt, Barnett, and Vega. These have all issued some version of accusations of corruption in the UDP. Sorry Pablo,

you cannot even talk.

4. This list would definitely be incomplete without mentioning Mek me Rich Andre and Sharon. These are the epitome of UDP land compensations. A piece of land was bought by the Haulover bridge for some $2,500 then resold for $15G to Andre and Sharon...algo asi. HERE is the punchline...

The land was NOT for sale and since the government had to "quitar" the land from poor Andre to return to rightful owner...the government compensated Andre and Sharon with 400,000 dollars each. Well this happened some four years ago. Can it get worse than that? Actually it can, imagine 5Million compensation; it is possible. Andre has been ordered to return the money but this is in appeal and Sharon is embroiled in a private settlement. Only the UDP… 5. Are their UDPs at the land office today? Are they offering 'help.'? Ask them to put it in black and white and you record them. Just to be on the safe and legal side. You might meet a coward of a man and also Gapi.

6. Wealthy landowners were offered a write off of their owed land taxes. Sedi owes taxes too and voiced that such an artificial arrangement was fair since he doesn’t make enough money to pay his taxes. He is glad for the write off. So, in 2019, these wealthy people did not make time to go apply for their write off so they were given an extension. Sad but true…instead of roughing them up to pay they are begged to please take the write off—or at least a partial write off.

So in comes the Santa Cruz is just the latest village who see parcels on danger of being taken away and distributed at Hugo Patt to those the UDP feels deserve it...other UDPs. The village reacted to a Hugo Patt visit and didn’t want to hear any of it. The chairman of Santa Cruz have the support of its Area Representative Ferguson, neighboring villages and most importantly its own people. DEAN BARROW DONE John Saldivar will be the new party leader of the UDP. It is a monumental blunder. Strategically it is a disaster. It is just what the opposition PUP needed to push over the cliff towards victory in the general elections.

Barrow, the cuddler of corruption, has been defeated by circumstances he did not for-see. Instead of a clean, democratic contest between Patrick Faber and John Saldivar, events manipulated by the cuddler ensured that all Cabinet Ministers line up behind Saldivar to ensure a defeat of Faber.

It is still unbelievable that Faber, having been the Deputy Prime Minister of the country ended up being despised by the Prime Minister and being officially undermined and sabotaged by Barrow. It is doubtful that Faber will get one third of the delegates needed to win the leadership convention.

Barrow did not want Saldivar either. With good reasons, Saldivar does not have a good reputation and has been an incompetent Minister of the police and the army. He could have been a hero over the Sarstoon issue. Instead he allowed Guatemala to openly invade our half of the Sarstoon which was part of our sovereign territory. It is only because of Barrow and his spineless cabinet are all guilty of this treason, that Saldivar did not get more bad publicity on the matter.

Unable to help Carla Barnett to win a nomination for Freetown constituency. And similarly failing to influence Port Loyola UDPs to accept the fattest minister of government, Barrow became stuck with Saldivar. Peyrefitte could have been installed in Queen Square, but that is reserved for the one, Anwar. Sista B is a mere transient holder over, a “transfient”.

Nothing that emerges from the criminal trial of Dermen in the U.S.A. will affect Saldivar in becoming the new leader of the U.D.P. If there emerges evidence that Saldivar took monies from the criminals in the U.S.A. trial that will be no big deal for Barrow and the lackeys that surround him. Did you hear Barrow say at his press conference that the monies could have been campaign contribution, and that there is nothing illegal about that. He ought to know. He never passed any campaign finance law. And never will.

As for the opposition, the general elections are theirs. But they have to work hard. They have to have a message and they must not underestimate their opponents or overlook the power of bribery that will be taking place by the desperate UDPs. One major message to the voters is a must-take the money and vote them out.

BRILLIANT MOVE BY KAREEM Attorney-at-Law and elected representative of Caribbean Shores scored these past few days.

He did some basic research and insightful thinking and exposed Dean Barrow and Michael Peyrefitte.

There is a law between Belize and the U.S.A. The government can start an investigation into the allegations against Minister John Saldivar. He is accused by name in a court trial in Utah, U.S.A. and could be the minister involved in taking money from two convicted criminals.

Neither Prime Minister Barrow or Attorney General Peyrefitte remember the treaty or they are trying to take Belizeans for fools.

We all know they do not want any more scandalous criminal information to come out against Saldivar. So they are telling Belizeans to wait and see what the information will be when one of the criminals testify in the U.S.A. court.

But the criminal accusing Saldivar cannot prove anything. All he can say is that he and the other criminal were bribing Saldivar with U.S. $25,000.00 on several occasions. Because he was handing over cash, this is nothing more than an allegation. He has no proof, he says he passed the money, Saldivar will say he received no money. If Saldivar was greedy enough to accept money by wire transfer, he and Barrow will say it was campaign contribution.

B.E.L. The Belize Electricity Board, who recently plunged Caye Caulker into darkness in the heart of the tourist season, is now saying they will spend 280 million dollars to upgrade the electricity capacity for the future.

In the meantime, could you dudes start replacing those dull yellow lights across Belize City so Belize could be bright again?  SEVEN YEARS IN JAIL A young man, 17 years of age were arrested and charged for murder seven years ago. This week when he finally got his trial date, the Prosecutor informed the court they can’t produce evidence so they are withdrawing the case.

The man Paul Smith, walked out of court a free man.

Who will now give him back his lost years?

Why was this man not tried within a year of his arrest? Murder is out of hand in Belize. The young cold-blooded killers must be thoroughly investigated and strong evidence acquired to get convictions. When these nolle prosequi take place after so many years it makes a mockery of the system.

Just locking up suspects on meagre evidence has no place in a system called justice.

We hope somebody advises the young man to sue the police, the D.P.P. office and the government. Seven years in jail (which is another word for hell) should result in aggravated damages. At least five hundred thousand dollars.

Too much foolishness is going in Belize.

Roo.- En un hecho inédito para el sur del estado, un elemento del Ejército perdió la vida y tres más resultaron heridos durante un enfrentamiento con hombres armados, durante la mañana de ayer, cuando éstos últimos descargaban una avioneta que aterrizó sobre la carretera federal Chetumal-Mérida.

El enfrentamiento ocurrió tras el reporte del sobrevuelo de una aeronave sospechosa a la altura del poblado Nuevo Israel, ubicado sobre la carretera mejor conocida como vía corta a Mérida.

El comandante de 34 Zona Militar, con base en Chetumal, José Luis Vázquez Araiza, encabezó el operativo, pero al llegar al entronque de la comunidad, él y su equipo fueron recibidos a balazos. En el hecho perdió la vida el soldado que conducía el vehículo oficial.

Inquietud entre empresarios de Panamá por llamado a huelga en ZLC

If the government is serious about fighting corruption, one of the easiest things it can do is give up majority control of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC). Free the PAC. The committee has a very important role to play in the good governance in the country. That’s because it has the authority to investigate instances of alleged corruption in government to ensure we get value for money spent by the administration— our tax dollars and loans we have to repay.

If some of the same ministers, who are guilty of massive corruption in public office, did not use their majority control to stifle the work of the Public Accounts Committee, that body would have in-

vestigated the $8 million double-priced Faber’s Road project and the huge hustling at the National Sports Council.

They should also investigate the terrible corruption at other government departments immediately after the media, the Auditor General’s Report, and when whistle blowers exposed instances of misappropriations years ago.

Those investigations could have resulted in Longsworth, Saldivar, and Faber being exposed and possibly imprisoned for massive and unconscionable theft of the people’s money and other resources. Those investigations would also have led to the recovery of millions of dollars that could be used to address the basic needs of the people for land, proper housing, jobs, and other basic things for a better life. Such investigations would also have forced more members of the administration to think twice before using their office to enrich themselves.

To message from the Belizean people to the Prime Minister and his Minister is simple: If you are serious about dealing with massive corruption that exist in the government; if you are serious about doing things above board, and have nothing to hide, then give up majority control of the PAC so it can do its job.

We deserve better. We tired of suffering, and we tired of broken promises for a better life while those governing the country and their cronies enrich themselves with the people’s money.

During this month we witnessed a policeman chopped, policeman injured, many others chopped, robberies, burglaries, and shootings. During all this, the Minister of National Security is busy country-trotting in an effort to forget Dermen et al. The virtual minister earlier this month revealed that last year there were TOO MANY murders once more. Instead of resigning, he still keeps his job content to say that a lot more needs to be done. The UDP do not get it now and never will. Someone else needs to be placed in the lead of the country. Our men need to be saved.

The Association of Justices of the Peace and Commissioners of the Supreme Court held its 19th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Sunday, January 26, 2020.

At this meeting, Members of the Association expressed their concerns regarding the disrespectful behaviour of the Ministry of Immigration and the Attorney General who are responsible for all Justices of the Peace in the country.

This is in connection with the Statutory Instrument (SI) which was sent to the general public regarding changes in the way passports applications will be signed.

As the President of the Association, I immediately called the Immigration Department on Friday requesting that a copy of the SI be emailed to me. The reason for this was since we were having our AGM on Sunday, I thought this was the opportune time to discuss with our members. We never received a reply on this. We would like to meet with the Minister of Immigration to discuss this.

The JP Act 2005 states that the Association should be informed of newly appointed JP’s but the Attorney General’s Ministry continues to disrespect the Association by appointing Justices of the Peace randomly without consulting or informing us.

We are therefore calling on the Ministry of the Attorney General to have discussions with the Association regarding this very important matter.

20 Eulogy David Louis ‘Bobby’ Sabido Sunrise: September 25, 1959 Sunset: “I’ll state my case, of which I’m certain, I’ve lived a life that’s full I’ve travelled each and every highway, and more, much more than this I did it my way”. Bobby’s life story could never be summed up in a couple of minutes but, I will try to make this short and effective, quick and efficient, as Bobby would say.

David Louis Sabido, known to all as Bobby, bounced into this world on September 25, 1959 to the late lovely Ms. Alva Sabido and John Duffy. He was an only child.

The name Bobby came about after he arrived home from the hospital and Aunt Nona who couldn’t say “baby” kept on calling him Bobby. From there the name stuck with him. Bobby grew up at their family home at # 90 New Road, Belize City, where he attended Holy Redeemer Primary School, and then moved on to St. John’s College where he graduated. He spent many of his childhood years with Auntie Vodsie who would refer to him as Bobby Tiddly Push. He held a very special place in her heart. When he was 5 years old, mom (Auntie Vodsie), got married and Bobby was front and centre at the ceremony. He even tagged along on the honeymoon sleeping between the married couple.

I can recall the strength of his arm wrestling, his handless summersaults and swimming in the New River in Orange Walk Town. What splendid days we shared with our big brother Bobby. Bobby was transitioning to a young man now, where he ventured into the world of works and joined the Barclay’s Bank family.

There was no better place for him to have been employed for that was where he met the love of his life, his ‘sweet thing’, Aurora Paiz. He would say, “mein I noh know what Aurora do to me fi mek I love her so much. Tha mussy the glass of water she gave me on my first day at work.” Well the water sure did work as he guaranteed that she became Mrs. Aurora Sabido, whom he truly cherished. And believe me when I say that if you ever saw Aurora, Bobby was surely right around. They were like peas in a pot, rice and beans, magnet and steel, you know what I mean. From there on his life continued to bloom as he and Aurora built an empire together, raising their beautiful children.

He was a true, true family man. He adored his lovely children and grandchildren.

Taking them to and from school, picking up report cards, and attending different school functions. Just being there sharing his unconditional love soothed his heart. He could always be counted on, and that’s a fact. No one could deny. Camille and Krista gave him the utmost daughterly love a father could ask for. Krista giving him those top of the line pedicures and personal nursing advices.

Camille kept him looking fly like young mango, with those young boy clothing. That guy was special, if he was stepping out the house he needed to look good and smell good. Creased pants, lily white tennis and scented with his favourite Joop or Cool Water was his thing. He stole Aurora’s heart.

We all knew his heart was softened for his male children because they were the ones that he knew would carry on his surname. His baby BJ was his tantalizer, how those two would crack up the family when they started to jinx each other. But BJ also kept him relaxed with the selection of music he played for him. His hang out buddy Daniel even became his own personal in-house

THE BELIZE TIMES His mouth was definite his greatest gift from God. That was his power tool. “That little hole in his face” got him everywhere and got him anything he wanted.

He would always say, “I could sell an Eskimo a ‘refridge’, a baldhead man a comb, or a man without fingers a ring. His sweet charm and loving words would definite capture your attention. He created an immediate bond with anyone he would meet. He was for sure “a cool cat”.

He was well-known that many would refer to him as the mayor of barber. Jeremy was always there to lend a helping hand and give some inspirational words. Bobby was sooo spoilt. What he enjoyed most was family gatherings, family road trips or just simply having his wife and kids around. Nothing meant more to him than family.

He enjoyed eating those tasty meals his wife would prepare for him but nothing wins him over more than a nice juicy burger.

No matter where he went to eat, be it the local restaurants to Chinese restaurants, to the finest restaurants he always wanted “a nice juicy burger.” If you ever sat with him to eat, know that at the end, the food would be graded or a price would be set to it. He was no chef but that man could whip up the best scrambled eggs and nobody made a richer bread pudding than him—that thing mi finga-licking.

Belama. Apart from that Bobby had a passion for football that was his tea dinner tea.

He especially enjoyed watching professional football when Real Madrid played.

He would chill on his veranda regularly enjoying the breeze, listening to music and taking a “tat” as he would say. From early on in his life Bobby was a jovial soul. Anyone who knew him, knew, he was the life of the party, the light in the dark and the laughter you needed. Aurora would open the dance floor with Bobby behind with his slayed moves. Nobody had better swag than him with his acrobatic moves. He turned your frown upside down. With Bobby around there was no time for sadness or misery.

He will be remembered for his great sense of humour and unconditional love.

In his later years, he developed a passion for giving back to the community. He

2020 would volunteer 2 days a week at the Divine Mercy Ministry to deliver food to the elderly. From there he and Aurora decided to prepare their own meals to give out to the homeless. What a kind hearted, well-rounded, gifted soul he was.

He leaves to mourn his passing His Loving wife, Aurora Sabido. Children: Jeremy, Camille, Daniel and David Sabido and Krista Arredondo.

Grandchildren: Trisha Hulse, Herman Requena, Jaylan Harris, Daniel and Ethan Sabido, Damien Arredondo, Joana, Susana and Hannah Sabido.

Daughters in law: Concept Sabido and Siobhan Westby.

Sons in law: Eugene Harris and Humberto Arredondo, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends.

“And now the end is near So I face the final curtain My friend, I’ll say it clear I’ll state my case of which I’m certain, Bobby did it his way.”

Continue dancing in heaven Bobby.

“And I hope the Angel’s know what they’ve got, cause here on earth it feels like everything good is missing. Since you left everything seems different.” Your children will cherish every wonderful memory of you.

Verdes lead PLB football Defending champs Verdes FC ae looking to clinch their berth in this year’s CONCACAF Champions League, as they lead the Premier League of Belize closing football season with 9pts from 3 wins. They dominated the San Pedro Pirates 2-1 at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio, while the No.2 Belmopan Bandits arrested the Belize Defense Force 5-0 at the MCC garden in Belize City on Sunday.

At the Broaster Stadium, Verdes led 2-0 with goals by Andres Cortebarria in the 12th minute, and Denmark Casey Jr in the 46th minute. Pirates’ Jesse Smith scored their sole tally in the 70th minute.

Dragons won the 2020 Belize Volleyball Association national men’s championship at the Belize City Center over the weekend. Over 160 players in 12 teams competed in 3 groups of 4 teams who played a single round robin, from which the best 8 teams advanced to the Quaterfinal playoffs, and 4 winners advanced to the semifinals. After 30 games in 2 days, S.Q. Dragons were crowned the 2020 champs!

One Vision…One People BILL OF RIGHTS The People’s United Party wants to share its vision with the Belizean people. It is rooted in a philosophy that goes back to the Father of our Nation the Right Hon. George Price. Mr. Price always believed ours was a work in progress; he led a revolution that is at its core peaceful, always constructive, progressive and uniquely Belizean.

These values remain true today and form a part of our PUP Creed. We are committed to the protection of our territorial sovereignty. We cannot, and will not risk even an inch of our beloved country, from the Rio Hondo to the Sarstoon. And we are committed to an accessible, fair and independent justice system and the rule of law in Belize.

The PUP will always seek to achieve social, economic and environmental justice. It is a commitment to the socio-economic improvement of all Belizeans. Our plan is to rid Belize of poverty. To the PUP, poverty is an ugly scar on our nation’s collective conscience, and no amount of cosmetic surgery can paste over the suffering of close to half of our people, most of them women and children, who live on less than ten dollars per day.

This is not only a task for governments. We all have a stake in this enterprise, but government must LEAD and bold leaders must show that they truly care. For us the task ahead is clear - to build a Belize that works for everyone, so that every Belizean should come to expect five things. This vision, this determination, has created what we call our BELIZEAN BILL OF RIGHTS. FIRST - Every Belizean should have access to a piece of land. With land we immediately create opportunities for upliftment and personal growth.

SECOND - Every Belizean should be able to own a decent home. The 17th Century Jurist and politician Edward Coke in speaking on human rights said: “A man’s home is his castle.” Every Belizean in 2017 should expect such an entitlement whether they live on Bocotora Street or on Seashore Drive.

THIRD - Every Belizean should be given the chance to go to school from pre-school to junior college. We have to make education free from pre-kinder to Junior College. If we will give our young people a chance at success, it must start with a good education.

FOURTH – Accessibility to quality basic health care is critical, which means every Belizean should be enrolled in the National Health Insurance Program. If we can invest 42 million dollars in a basketball stadium, then we should be able to provide basic health services to all.

FIFTH and most important, the driving force behind it all is JOBS - good jobs that can lead to meaningful careers; jobs that will give Belizeans a chance for personal growth and prosperity and provide a hand up for those at the very bottom of the economic ladder.

If we do these things, if we create a fair and just society, if we build on these principles we will then be able to change people’s lives and together we will rid our shores of the scourge that is poverty.
