On February 7, 2019 the CEO of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) wrote the PSU clarifying that the request for study leave was not considered because Ms. Elrington is not eligible for such leave by virtue of not being a permanent public officer. They also clarified that no permanent post was ever created for Ms. Elrington and that her father, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, was not aware of such request and was not involved in the submission of such a request. The CEO also informed the PSU that Ms. Elrington was no longer in the employ of the Government of Belize.

On the face of it …it would seem that the MFA was busy rectifying the requests or actions done by someone in the Ministry, since no one seems to know… or everyone is dissociating themselves from this matter. Even Lois M. Young, Head of Belize’s Mission to the United Nations where Ms Elrington was posted, wrote to the Amandala stating that she had no knowledge and or involvement with anything written by the MFA on behalf of the contract officer.

However, yesterday, The Belize Times was furnished with a copy of the GOB Smart stream system that is recording a payroll payment as late as two days ago, February 12, 2019. The file also has payments done as far back as November of 2018 when we are reliably informed Ms Elrington was already in Jamaica pursing studies at the Norman Manley Law School.

There are many questions that emanate from these clarifications and dissociations by officers of the MFA. How is it that Ms Elrington is in Jamaica since last year and her Ambassador had no knowledge of her “study leave”. Why would the CEO in MFA write that the requests had the support of the Head of Mission in New York if it didn’t?

And more puzzling is the fact that the CEO in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs writes the PSU on February 7, 2019 stating that Ms. Elrington is no longer employed by GOB and yet she continues to collect a government salary. It should also be asked of Ambassador Young if the Mission in New York has stopped paying rent on Ms Elrington’s Apartment, cancelled her child allowances and stoped her per diem.

This has become a hot potato for the MFA. Lots of questions with no answers. But the biggest question is who is paying Paulette?

POLICE RECOVER HUGE AMOUNT of firearms stolen from licensed gun dealer

Belize City: Tuesday, 12th February 2019 By:osilbz@np The Police has recovered a large number of firearms and ammunition that were stolen from the new Victor L. Bryant building located on the Lake-I Boulevard leading to the Chetumal Bridge.

Burglars broke into the newly erected galvanized building around 3:00 am Tuesday morning and discretely focused on the area with the firearms. They stole a cache of 20 firearms, rifles, shotguns and short arms, along with a huge amount of ammunition during this breakin. When questioned, the on-site security told police that he did not hear or see any strange movements in the area during the time the thieves were taking out the firearms out of the building.

Sr. Supt. Marco Vidal told the media that police recovered 2 point twenty-two revolvers, 3 point thirty-eight revolvers as well, 5 twelvegauge pump action shotguns and 8 point twenty-two rifles.

A total of nine persons are currently detained. In addition, at the house of one of the detainees, police found over four kilograms of marijuana. So, he will also be charged for that offense.

He added that the persons detained in connection with the firearm theft are locally known gang members.

Investigators are yet to establish if the arms ammunition recovered reconcile with documented company inventory.

Police Commissioner Chester Williams for his part said that he had given instructions for Senior Superintendent Ramirez, officer in charge of the Dangerous Goods Unit, to ensure that gun dealers are inspected regularly and tasked with taking an inventory of fire arms and ammunition at Victor L. Bryant. The superintendent is also to do an in-

depth inspection of the premises to see whether or not the premise is a secure place where firearms are supposed to be kept especially firearms in such a large quantity.

Commissioner Williams added that what happened here was a breach of national security, especially if these firearms and ammunition filtered onto the streets of Belize City or anywhere in this country.

COHUNE WALK SMELLS LIKE HUMAN WASTE Cohune Walk, Belmopan Wednesday 13th February 2019 By: osilbz@np Residents of Cohune Walk in Belmopan has called on the Department of the Environment to take quick action and have the owners of Travellers Belize Ltd do something to filter unbearable smell that is emanating from the residues of the composition of sugarcane molasses mixed with brewer’s yeast that distils into alcohol. As it is right now, one can hardly tell the difference in the smell between the Belize Water Services Limited Treatment ponds for human waste and that shitty smell that is coming from Travellers Distillery next door.

Williams voiced to the media that a heavy responsibility lies on the shoulders of a licensed firearm dealer since they have to ensure that their firearms are neither lost nor stolen, and that makes the responsibility ten-fold.

He added that by his observation of the building that houses Victor L. Bryant, it is unsuitable for a licensed gun dealer. Williams said that under the law, the dealer must have a fortified building to be able to house the kind of firearms inventory the Bryant kept and that building is constructed out of zinc.

He continued saying, we cannot have people who are supposed to be responsible doing things that will create havoc within our society. The way the firearms were kept within the building is totally inappropriate to say the least and for us that is of serious concern.

Police are still on their investigation on this matter.

elize’s young urban males are under attack. Genocide is the systematic and deliberate destruction in whole or in part of an ethnic, religious or national group. This week there were at least two more murders that involved young men. GOB has in the last few years enacted several pieces of Draconian legislation that they claim specifically target gang-related activity. GOB has even gone so far as to establish special police forces to deal with gang violence and still it has not abated. Last year 2018 has been one of the bloodiest years on record with 143 murders.

In September 2011 PM Barrow met with known gang leaders and negotiated the now infamous Gang Truce. This saw the GOB, through what they dubbed the Gang Truce Program, spend on average $20,000 weekly as direct payment to gang affiliates to refrain from engaging in open gang warfare. Total estimated expense for this program came up to 1 Million dollars. The benefits of the million-dollar idea…? The murder rate dipped slightly for the remaining four months in 2011. However, in 2012, the murder rate totaled an unprecedented 145, only 2 more than in 2018. The conclusion is that the programs and policies of the GOB in regard to gangs in Belize are both expensive and ineffectual. It has been suggested that the Gang Truce actually inspired Belize City gangs to become better organized and violent in order to benefit from the cash bonanza. the reverse of what was intended. Organized crime became a lucrative business in Belize and everyone wanted their “cut.”

It was widely known and expressed what the results of that mad lab experiment were going to be. It was obvious that the influx of money would appease the gangs for a short while before they started to vie for a bigger slice of the pie which would mean even more violence.

Was the PM duped by the gang bosses of Belize into thinking this would actually work? Maybe all the consequences were not contemplated?

The truth is that our young men face mass extermination and there is a deliberate attack on the Belizean urban male. The weapons used against him are impediments to education, poverty, and unemployment. The destruction is systematic when GOB fails to improve the conditions that keep Belizeans in less than dignified living conditions. It would seem almost purposeful that the very same policies we are told are designed to suppress gang violence in Belize act as a catalyst for even greater violence and crime. GOB has not seen fit to meaningfully invest in any programs that would alleviate the scourge of crime in the long-term. Instead, they opt to give the kind of conditioned help that keeps people dependent. We are reminded by Dianne Finnegan that perhaps this is their purpose in order to keep the status quo.

We must do better for our young people. Violence, crime and murder do not only plague Belize City, but it is also a countrywide scourge.

There are those who like Nero watch our city burn from the safety of their palaces. For too many ordinary Belizeans crime, murder and violence are inescapable. We must bring back a Belize That Works for All of Us!

La verdad es que nuestros jóvenes se enfrentan al exterminio masivo y hay un ataque deliberado contra el macho urbano beliceño.

Las armas utilizadas contra él son impedimentos para la educación, la pobreza y el desempleo.

La destrucción es sistemática cuando GOB no logra mejorar las condiciones que mantienen a los beliceños en condiciones de vida menos dignas. Parecería casi intencional que las mismas políticas que se nos dicen están diseñadas para suprimir la violencia de pandillas en Belice actúan como un catalizador para violencia y crimen aun mayor. GOB no ha considerado conveniente invertir de manera significativa en ningún programa que alivie el flagelo del crimen a largo plazo. En su lugar, optan dar el tipo de ayuda condicionada que mantiene a las personas dependientes. Dianne Finnegan nos recuerda que tal vez este sea su propósito para mantener el statu quo.

Debemos hacer mejor para nuestros jóvenes.

La violencia, el crimen y el asesinato no sólo afectan a la ciudad de Belice, sino que también es un flagelo de todo el país. Belize’s Youth Stifled by Gun Violence A son’s sacrifice his life for a father; the life of a Sports Star is snuffed in latest round of gun violence

By Aaron Humes Freelance Reporter BELIZE CITY, Tuesday 12th February 2019 The frightening power of the gun has united separate communities in grief, following murders of two promising young men at the weekend.

Both 19 year old Masaki Yanai and 20 year old Dwayne Cummings, a/k/a/ Dwayne Avila, were students of the University of Belize. Yanai was a bright, quiet young man studying engineering while helping his chef father Takayuki at the Taka Kitchen at the Northern Shops on the Philip Goldson Highway. Cummings was in his second year with the Elite Basketball League’s Orange Walk Running Rebels after a stellar collegiate career and dreamed of playing

ball at the highest levels.

But on Friday night outside the family home on Park Avenue, Buttonwood Bay, Takayuki and Masaki Yanai were set upon by armed robbers who fatally shot Masaki and critically wounded Takayuki before making off with a sum of money inside a pouch carried by Takayuki at the time.

Police detained and later released one suspect and Commissioner of Police Chester Williams has directed additional assistance from the Major Crimes Section based in Belmopan to solve this case. At a briefing it was noted that as many as four persons may be involved and that the robbers were well set up to attack.

Empowering our Women and Girls to Greatness Hi Everybody. This week the International Community is bringing greater focus on the inclusion of women and girls in the field of Science. In fact February 11th was declared by the United Nations as the International Day of women and girls in Science. This day was declared by the Member states of the United Nations to remind us all that women and girls are equally important to their development and enhancement of science and technology. It is also a time to set aside to encourage more women to enter the field of science and in so doing draw the world closer to gender equality.

Now the role of women in building a world truly fit for humanity is an important part of the work of nations all across the world, so much so that in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for a better world declares at goal number 5 that by 2030 the nations of the world will work to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. What that means is that all of us must work to ensure that women and girls have the same access to health care, education, and a good job the same as men do.

In the people’s United Party we fully support the goal of achieving women’s equality. This is why we are so proud of the work being done by our United Women’s Group, which continues to insist that as a Party we must speak out against issues that affect Belizean women and men alike. For example, domestic violence is a serious problem in Belize and we were happy to see one of our young women leaders, Belize City Councilor Candice Pitts use her influence at the Belize City Council to host the first successful public forum on domestic violence in Belize City. We look forward to seeing real outcomes as a result of the attention and awareness that Candice and the Belize City Council brought to this important issue.

We also are working to meet the objectives of the Party’s Women’s Agenda, which calls for greater participation of women in leadership at all levels in our party. It also speaks of the concerns of women and girls participation in education, their right to make decisions over their body and their right to work with the expectation of equal pay for equal work. These are not bold ideas, they are rights which our Belizean women are entitled to for they were enshrined in our Belizean Constitution.

So as we celebrate February 11, we must bear in mind that gender equality and empowerment of women and girls is vital to the development of Belize on a whole. Ensuring that women and girls have equal access to the study of science in schools is critical to the development of science and contributes to the country’s capacity to innovation. It is also a part of our work to build a Belize that works for everyone.

Reflexions on Diabetes Type II

By Gerald Zuniga, M.D: Holistic Clinician Concerned about the widespread nature of diabetes type II within our society, falling into an endemic status and also as a pandemic, I decided to prepare and share the following with you all.

I want to see my people healthy!

PART 2 What is Hypoglycaemia ?

Hypoglycaemia which is low blood sugar can kill you in a few minutes. Meanwhile, hyperglycaemia which is high blood sugar, the level has to be really high to have symptoms and signs. Hence, many don’t know they are diabetics until late. So as I was saying, glucose is the energy source for our body cells especially the brain cells.

It is like the gasoline for a vehicle. When suffering from diabetes types II, because of a deficit in the production of or a resistance to insulin, you have a lot of glucose outside the cell but you lack the key which is insulin for the glucose to enter the cell for the cell to be energetic and active. It is like a group of you wanting to enter your locked house but for you all to enter you need the key. So the cells starts to get sluggish and sad. This process of sluggishness causes chronic inflammation and even early death of the cell as a cellular response and the first to be affected are the small blood vessels called capillaries or microvasculature and later affect the microvasculature or large blood vessels.

Where do we have a lot of capillaries?

We have a lot of capillaries in the kidneys, retina of the eyes, the nerves, and the penis. Hence, the medical conditions or complications these individuals suffer from as I mentioned earlier. Namely, chronic renal failure, diabetic retinopathy, and peripheral neuropathy, and erectile dysfunction as chronic conditions and not minimizing acutized conditions like hyperosmolar hyperglycaemic nonketotic coma which can take one to an intensive care unit. Diabetic retinopathy leads to blindness despite the advent of laser treatments and the neuropathy manifest itself by severe pains especially in your lower extremities leading to diabetic foot or feet and amputations if left unattended and it a pain that pain killers do little or nothing to alleviate it.

For chronic renal failure, we have peritioneal and hemodialysis but hemodialysis is now more widely used. None is a treatment. Rather it is a palliative measure used to eliminate creatinine from your body which is a waste product from protein in your diet and from your body’s own cell metabolism. If this creatinine is not removed, it intoxicates the body especially the brain causing uremic encephalopathy. Not treated is can conduce to death. As I said, hemodialysis is a palliative measure preparing you for a kidney transplant. If you are lucky of having a donor and after many compatibility test, you may receive a kidney transplant at a cost of around $25,000 – $35,000USD and even more depending on which hospital and country the transplant is done and after the kidney transplant if you are fortunate you need to drink

expensive immunosuppressants all the rest of your life. Also a kidney transplant with diabetes is a complicated situation because the cause has to be controlled. Remember, when diabetic your immune system is weak and with chronic renal failure it is worse.

Your haemoglobin is low and it is important to oxygenate your cells. By the way, chronic renal failure patients should always walk around with a mask to avoid respiratory diseases. It is an important preventive measure especially when there is an outbreak airborne infectious diseases like the flu. The cost of hemodialysis is around $1750USD or more monthly till you die with all the risk involved especially infections and low blood pressure. Isn’t it cheaper to prevent, especially when there is a genetic predisposition, or control the disease? Diabetes types II is a family disease eventually because it affects the bread winners of the home.

How could I know if I am suffering from diabetes mellitus type II? Does diabetes gives you warning? Yes, it does. It tells you I don’t want to invade your body but if you are carefree I will surely take over. The warning of diabetes is a triad, meaning 3. It has 3 basic manifestations.

The 3 polies. What are they? They are polyphagia, polydipsia, and polyuria. In small change, polyphagia is that tendency to be eating and eating with low saciety. You don’t get full. Polydipsia is that tendency to be drinking a lot of water and still feel thirsty and polyuria is that frequent going to urine.

Those are the signs that you need to pay keen attention to.

That being said, diabetes is a very expensive disease for the individual, the family, and for the state because it has an important economic impact and it creates a pressure on a health budget. Nature is aware that it gave us the disease. Hence, nature has responded to you but you may not be aware of it. If you live here in Belize City, you may be observant of a phenomenon that you see sorroci (Mormodica Charantia) climbing all around. That is natures or God send to you. God give the disease but he also give the cure. The growth of sorocci was seen more after our grandparents burnt the fields doing the slash and burn method of farming. We see it now even in towns and cities. In Belize City, for example, it is nature’s response. Don’t ignore it.

Can diabetes type II be cured?

Contrary to the teachings of the conventional or alopathic medical community which to this date has no cure for diabetes type II, it can be cured with a holistic approach. There are many families of drug used by us in the medical community to control diabetes but there is the body’s natural phenomenon of tolerance when you find out you are a combined drug and so on and later only insulin works and the Calvary continues. The treatment can be from within a few month to 2 years. So diabetes and high blood pressure can be cured but it needs discipline, responsibility, and dedication. However, weigh the benefit in comparison with haemodialysis, kidney transplant,

or blindness as explained above. It is always cheaper to prevent these complications.

All diabetic should have a glucometer. Always jot down your blood sugar result so as to present it to your doctor. The datum pre breakfast is important. Also, there is now personal meter to measure your glycosylated haemoglobin. Technology is advancing.

After suffering from diabetes, you have difficulties with the metabolism of fats so your diet should be low in fat, high in fibre (vegetables, whole grain cereals like whole grain oats), and adequate amount of protein. Vegetables are rich sources of vitamins, minerals, and phytomolecules that can even avoid certain cancers. Fibre rich diet also avoid constipation. Divide your meals in small portions so as to avoid a blood sugar rush.

Drink adequate amount of water, if you don’t suffer from kidney failure. Once with kidney failure the amount of liquid intake should be regulated to avoid body swelling which can be determined by ankle or foot swelling because of gravity. I don’t recommend that you use sweeteners like the famous one you buy at store. The sweetener that I recommend is stevia. It also has antioxidant property. Based on the recommendations from serious studies on the sweeteners in the so called “diet drinks” and years of clinical experience. So, as I said earlier, I don’t recommend that you drink the so called “diet drink”. They contain a sweetner that is not compatible to good health. If you so desire, drink a normal bottled or canned drink sweentened with cane sugar diluted with water. Honey could also be used in diabetics. It depends on your overall condition. So this goes to all. Avoid drinking the so called “diet drinks”. It is contrary to good health according to scientific studies with no conflict of interest. Control the consumption of tropical fruits they are usually richer in sugar than fruits from temperate regions like apples and grapes. When you eat apples and grapes consume the skin or peel and seeds.

For example, the seeds of grapes are rich in resveratrol. Hence, the health benefit of a cup of red wine. Resveratrol is a very important phytomolecule for good health. It controls low density cholesterol which better off circulation to theheart and brain and avoiding stroke and heart attack respectively and peripherically avoiding the neuropathy we had talked and consequently avoiding amputations. Increase uncooked foods in your diet as much as possible. Healthy eating habits are important not only in content but in style. What do I mean by this? You need to eat wuth a relaxed mind.

Chew your food properly. Digestion begins in the mouth and the proper milling or chewing of the food by the teeth and the incorporation of salivary juice is important. Remember, that saliva is not only to soften food before swallowing to cause less friction on the esophagus but it also contains important enzymes.

Hence, we say digestion begins in the mouth.

Most take metformin for their diabetes.

Always make sure that your creatinine level is normal. This is change or to regulate the dose and avoid the accumulation of lactic acid in your muscle and avoid cramps. I had told you about sorroci. Make a tea of sorroci, cinnamon, and ginger. There are many articles in important medical journals about the blood sugar lowering property of sorroci and cinnamon. Drink at least 3 cups daily and you follow up your blood sugar level with your glucometer and be assessed by your doctor. Ginger helps in neuropathy because it has vasodilation property so it improves the circulation removing toxins that causes inflammation of the nerves. Hence, the pain as a response.

Remember, the lows kill in minutes. If you feel cold, sweaty, have goose bumps, blurred vision, altered consciousness, you can have a suspicion that your sugar is low and you must suck a sweet. Daily exercise is also important for good health overall and the same for diabetics. Unfortunately, our country is not an exercise friendly nation. Not even for the most practical exercise like walking. Our central and governments need to design and redesign our communities where emphasis is placed

07 7 on human integral development. Pranayama which is an element of yoga can be done at home or in your office. Where you breath in profoundly and you exhale for a couple of minutes. Remember, I talked about anxiety and depression both are stressful situations and products of stress themselves. So pranayama helps you to relax and oxygenate your cells and hence detoxifies. Stress management is very important here and for good health in general. Control your emotions.

Avoid neurotic behaviours. You do yourself a lot of harm with such conduct.

Diabetes and Politics Most want us to believe that diabetes mellitus type II is a diet related disease. Far from the truth. We as zoopolitikons have created and applied a political system which is not compatible with good health and most of the time there is not a multitasked team within a government at high level who work together to design health policies, economic models, educational methodologies, and food security measures to improve the quality of life of its citizens. Diabetes is the disease of ultra capitalism where we have the extremes. Greed and scarcity. Both of these conditions have serious physiopathological impacts on the human body. Both greed and scarcity creates anxiety. Anxiety stimulates the production of adrenaline and other neurotransmitter which interferes with the insulin production and metabolism pathway.

The body experiencing this daily: diabetes, high blood pressure and gastric diseases are the consequences. There is where a government comes in. It is the utmost responsibility of a government to be a facilitator. Our Constitution is clear that we are organized as a society to achieve HAPPINESS. Are we happy as a nation? How do we reduce scarcity? We do so by creating stable jobs for our citizens? And I say stable jobs, because it is same if you are working and you are working worrying that you can lose your job anytime because of political victimization, racial discrimination, religion, etc. We have a high rate of unemployment and ironically having plenty resources but unfortunately not the will.

Create stable jobs, reduce violence and you will see that the rate of this and other diseases will automatically reduce. Anxiety is a killer. It creates havoc in the human body and there is a principle in biophysics that after constant excitation there comes inhibition.

So anxiety comes depression which can reach the level of schizophrenia. Don’t you see a lot of these cases on our streets that our authorities don’t care addressing? They don’t give a darn. Is it because the majority are black brothers and sisters? With a rehabilitation program they can be rescued.

Don’t anxiety and depression conduce to drug use and abuse? Isn’t the system we have created a creator of an unhealthy society? When will we as a nation brake and make the necessary changes? Now greed.

Greed has similar impact on the body but it goes higher because it enter the spiritual realm. Greed is a Gunam. Hence, you will find out the many health benefits that people receive who are involved in charity work with a pure heart. Even their cancer gets cure in certain cases. Greed is one of the worse because it cause deprivation.

When you want everything for yourself you deprive someone from something who could even have more use for it.

There are 8 conditions that contributes to diseases and diabetes is no exception according to Siddha Mefical Science which I am finishing a Doctoral Degree in. They are: 1. Melancholy (Kaanam), 2. Hatred (Krodham), 3. Miserableness, (Lopam), 4. Animosity (Machariam), 5. Illegal Love (Mogam), 6. Indifference (Idumbai), and 8.

Envy. Conventional medicine thst we learn in mainstream medical faculties at universities don’t address these.

So diabetes deserves seriousness from ourselves as society and from the health policy makers and I insist that it be declared as national emergency.

On Wednesday, Usher made another shocking revelation on social media exposing the image of a police constable with a fresh wound to the lower back right side of his head behind his ear, which is tantamount to “Aggravated Assault.” This “Assault”, he claimed in the post that the junior ranking officer was attacked whilst on duty by a Senior Police.

After being beaten, he was transported like a common criminal to a detention facility then exercised his rights requesting a medico-legal form to be examined by a medical practitioner. According to the news leak, the victim is seeking court action against the senior officer who abused his authority.

When the media tried to get a response from commissioner regarding the serious breach of discipline, the arrogant response was, “I am not going to confirm or comment on that right now.”

These allegations and the arrogant response like this make you wonder and what to think when you hear about police brutality by common citizens who often report this kind of brutality.

Guatemalan Arms Trafficker caught with AK47 and Ammo

Belize City. Wednesday 13th February 2019

By: osilbz@np A Guatemalan national and two Belizeans believed to be well-connected to the underworld have been charged with (2) Counts each of possession of Prohibited Firearms and (2) Counts of Possession of Prohibited Ammunition. They are 34-year-old Belizean Edgar Giovanni De La O, Guatemalan Jorge Luis Reyes Villeda, and a 17-year-old minor.

According to police sources, Reyes Villeda crossed into Belize from Guatemala at the Western border just after 7:00 pm last Friday evening. He were sporting a late model black Range Rover SUV with Guatemalan registered plates. And while record shows that he legally entered through immigration, apparently no searches were effectively carried out by Custom’s enforcement, or they would have discovered what Benque Viejo Police discovered some six hours later during a search of the same vehicle.

It is a standard procedure that whenever you are driving a foreign registered vehicle into Belize that the driver must present all pertinent documents pertaining to the vehicle. This is then to be crossed-checked by a custom officer who physically examines the vehicle, including the VIN number, followed by a detailed search of the vehicle, but all indications are that all that was ignored by customs.

After leaving the border police said they saw the vehicle circling around and about the town but because a local was seen inside, it did not raise any red flags or suspicion. Occupants of the vehicle visited a popular night spot and started having a good time drinking until after midnight when they began acting in a disorderly manner and causing a disturbance.

When police arrived on the scene, there was a brief struggle between Reyes Villegas and police as he attempted to drive off from the scene since the other two persons were already in the vehicle. After the three men were in custody, police conducted a thorough search of the vehicle where they discovered (1) AK-47 Assault Rifle and one 5.56 Mini Galil weapon. They also found 47 rounds of 7.62 ammunition and 14 rounds of 5.56 ammunition.

The Vehicle has since been impounded consistent with the laws of Belize.

In today’s world there is a tremendous amount of attention being given to the rights of women, their well-being, their development and their advancement. It surely goes without saying that our world will be a vastly better place when the rights of women, our education, our health, our economic security, and the betterment of our families is first and foremost on national agendas. Many eloquent leaders in every sphere of endeavor know that this is true and that therefore we must all do our best to ensure greater attention to women. Right here at home we last week saw the issue of domestic violence take center stage under the auspices of the Belize City Council. Good wishes and commendation are due to the organizers and all participants at the forum. There is still far too much oppression and mistreatment of our Belizean women, and any initiative to address this intractable problem is welcome and deserves our support.

We must think globally and act locally. And in looking at the worldwide scene where women are concerned, I took notice in late November last year of a listing by the BBC called “One Hundred Women 2018: Who Is On The List ?” It appears that the BBC look for and name 100 women yearly from the global community who are INSPIRING and INFLUENTIAL. In 2018 these women ranged in age from 15 to 94 and are from some sixty countries. According to the listing they are trailblazers, leaders and everyday heroes. Some of them bring stories of achievement against all odds, and of the sixty countries these women are from, Belize is one of them !!

I surely will not try to tell of all 100, but I will attempt to share a representative selection of them, along with each one’s claim to fame. (If you wish to see the listing of all of them please go to the BBC website and search under “BBC 100 Women 2018.) I start with Abisoye Ajayi-Akinfolarin, 33 who is a social impact entrepreneur in Nigeria. She is the founder of GirlsCoding, an NGO that teaches girls how to code, design and build websites that help to solve problems in their communities. There is also Lizt Alonso, 51 a Director and Choreographer from Cuba who created an internationally recognised fusion dance company which has performed in hundreds of cities across the world.

Included too is the venerable Isabel Allende, 76 of Peru. Allende is the world’s most widely read Spanish-language author. She has sold more than 70 million books in 42 languages. Also from Peru is Cindy Arlette Contreras Bautista, 28. She is

an attorney who became the face of the NiUna Menos (Not One Woman Less) movement against domestic violence, after a video of her being attacked by her boyfriend went viral.

And then Tamara Cheremnova, 62.

She is an author from Russia who lives with Cerebral Palsy. She writes fairy tales and is nicknamed “the Storyteller from Siberia.”

We continue with Noma Dumezweni, 49 from eSwatini (formerly known as Swaziland.) Noma is the first woman to play the adult version of Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, currently playing in London’s West End and Broadway in New York. Raghda Ezzeldin, 26 is a Free-diver from Egypt who has broken records in descending to extreme depths without breathing apparatus. Meena Gayen, 36, of India, owns her business, and she and other women in the Sundarbans Delta have worked to build a brick road to make their village more accessible.

Also impressive is Lao Khang, 26 a rugby player from Laos. She has led the Laos women’s National Rugby Team to historic international victories, and she is the first Hmong woman to earn her rugby coach licence.

Next is Ana Graciela Sagastume Lopez, 38 of El Salvador. She is a prosecutor and was appointed head of a unit investigating cases of femicide. Earlier this year she was named El Salvador’s women and femicide special prosecutor/co-ordinator. Ruth Medufia, 27 is from Ghana. She is a female welder, who lives in an urban slum community. She aspires to be a role model for young women in the construction industry. Sam Ross, 30 lives with Down Syndrome. She has worked for ten years as a catering assistant at Glasgow City College in Scotland, and she travels widely representing persons with Down Syndrome.

Last but not least in this small selection of 100 Women is Belizean Errolyn Wallen, 60. Errolyn was born in Belize and moved to England at age two. She is therefore British as well. Errolyn is an accomplished composer and performer, who has written 17 operas. She has won an Ivor Novello award for Classical Music songwriting and composing.

When you Google her it says “Errolyn is a Belize-born British composer.

She was the first black woman to have performed at the Proms.” One of her siblings is jazz trumpeter Byron Wallen. You might say that she is surely more British than Belizean, but remember she born yah !! I am pleased that she made BBC’s 2018 cut of 100 Women. Look her up, and you will surely be impressed and inspired !!

HOW COULD WE END CORRUPTION? “To confront criminals, we need to finish with corruption. If we don’t do this, there is no hope”.–Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador

By Dr. Pedro Villegas Corruption has had a corrosive effect over citizens’ confidence in public institutions. According to a recent survey, 53% of Latin Americans consider that their government has a poor performance in the fight against corruption and only 30% feel satisfied with democracy. Corruption made countries poorer.

The economies grew, but wealth did not permeate downwards. The well-being of the population did not improve.

Experts in the matter pointed out that the unprecedented number of corruption scandals in Latin America and the Caribbean threaten to erode the foundations of much of the region’s economic well-being and political stability, as well as the rule of law. In contrast, when European and Asian countries improved their governance and anti-corruption policies halfway through the last century, it tripled their GDP per capita relative to most Latin American countries.

To face the challenges posed by the corruption scandals afflicting the region, the IDB convened some of the world’s leading anti-corruption experts. Between June 2017 and September 2018, eight specialists in taxation, extractive industries, infrastructure, civil society, governance, institutions, private sector and information technologies, prepared an independent report to explain the consequences and offer possible solutions from multiple angles.

The panel of experts agreed that the recent regional scandals indicate that corruption in Latin America and the Caribbean is systemic and encompasses a complex network of methods and mechanisms on a large scale. The devices to divert funds have become more sophisticated, and the governance and control systems of the region are not sufficiently developed to face these new challenges. At the same time, in many countries, “petty corruption” has also become more evident, which, even though is not conducted in the same way as large-scale corruption, has a direct impact on every citizen.

During the last decade, most of the anti-corruption initiatives conducted in the region have been partial, irregular and with a stronger focus on legislation rather than implementation. In that sense, the report indicates that there is no need for more laws or agreements or anything like that, what is needed is implementation.

The anti-corruption agenda shall be revitalized and expanded through a series of key actions like: • Guaranteed resources and independence for the judicial system; • Promotion of innovative approaches for the collaboration in judicial investigations; • Expanded governmental and financial transparency; • Increased monitoring of public

contracts awards; • Changes to the financing of political campaigns and increased transparency; • Enabling and expanding the use of technologies to fight corruption; • An assessment of the depth and extension of corruption at all levels, among other actions.

The experts also highlighted the importance of the way in which these reforms are implemented.

International rules on transparency and integrity serve as a roadmap for reforms at the national level. However, for them to succeed in curbing corruption, they must go beyond improving the technical quality of laws or public integrity policies. It is necessary, the experts point out, that the reforms engage the civil society and the private sector.

There is no doubt that the active participation of citizens is fundamental to prevent corruption and promote transparency. Now, with social networks and increased access to information, there is an enormous potential to strengthen integrity in our countries.

The panel of experts also highlighted the role of the private sector.

As they point out, scandals tend to place a spotlight on the corrupt individuals, and unfortunately ignore the fact that for every contract obtained with a bribe, there were other businesses who refused to pay for them. Among several ideas, one of the experts’ recommendations was for the creation of collective action strategies by the private sector to ensure that integrity rules are adopted progressively by businesses.

The report makes clear that technology and innovations will play a key role in promoting transparen-

cy and avoiding corruption in the coming years. In the legal sector, innovations such as plea bargains, which was an essential instrument for the persecution of the politicians involved in the scheme, could be adopted.

However, technological tools to report and detect the laundering of funds have the greatest potential to amplify the fight against corruption.

Definitely, technology will play a key role in increasing public integrity.

With the help of innovation, data and technology, and a real commitment to democratic values, we have the potential to really take action against the problem of corruption, Now, we have the tools to determine with some degree of precision where some cases of corruption are occurring and to use collective intelligence to find good solutions to stop it.

Liar BY: Collet Montejo BELIZE CITY: Wednesday 13th February 2019 It seems like eons of years ago but back in 2008 before the PUP demitted office the price of a gallon of regular gasoline in Belize ranged between $5.00 and $7.00 per gallon. The PUP made a conscious effort not to cross the $10.00 per gallon line even with oil crude prices ranging between $120 and $130 US dollars per barrel.

By the time we hit 2009, one year into the UDP administration, the Amandala newspaper wrote and I quote: “Belizean consumers are fed up of being battered by high pump prices, and while experts don’t expect oil prices to hit the record highs they did in the latter half of 2008, locally there are concerns that pump prices appear to be jumping too high too fast after the major relief consumers enjoyed last year, with prices dipping to as low as $5 a gallon.” In 2009 Barrow and his minions introduced a $1.00 per gallon tax to address their budgetary shortfall of $123 million dollars.

Since Barrow promised to keep gas prices below $7.00 we have seen constant and steady increases in the fuel prices. From $1.00 per gallon additional tax on fuel, government today now takes in between 46 to 50% of the per gallon cost at the pump as taxes. Simply put, with prices hovering over ten dollars per gallon, just about $5.00 of that cost goes to GOB in taxes. Do not forget, under the PUP we were paying $5.00 per gallon. Under the UDP $5.00 is our tax per gallon.

In the short term, both the consumer and the economy continue to suffer from the higher gas prices.

First, expensive gas hurts producers and those in the agro industry. It also hurts our consumers. When we import fuel and other goods and services we export money to pay for them.

When the price of importing fuel goes up, goods and services increase and more money escapes the local economy thus reducing wealth. Fact is the higher cost of fuel, fifty percent of which is government tax, makes everything more difficult. It becomes more expensive to move goods, commodities and people across the country and this will show up on everyone’s bottom line. As the cost of living, due to fuel prices, increase, so does the rate of poverty and the decrease in wealth. In plain English we say there is far more suffering. The idiom is indeed true: “Things Dread under the Red.” Belizeans have spent years complaining about the high cost of fuel due to the unconscionable increases in fuel prices brought on by the Bar-

row Administration. Recently we saw hikes in our fuel prices while internationally the price of crude currently stands at $52.72 per barrel. Do not forget that the PUP kept fuel prices below $8.00 per gallon when the price of crude was $90.93 per barrel. In the words of our seniors, any ‘Blind eye Jamsey’ can see we are being taxed to death by the tax sucker Dean Barrow and this UDP government. Listed below are the per US gallon cost of fuel as of February 9, 2019 according to the Global Petrol Prices a website that tracks the global rise and fall in fuel prices. All prices are quoted in Belize Dollars.

Costa Rica: $7.27 Nicaragua: $6.96 Honduras: $7.19 El Salvador: $6.13 Panama: $5.45 Jamaica: $8.93 Bahamas: $8.09 Haiti: $6.06 Cuba: $9.23 Mexico: $7.42 Guatemala: $6.01 Belize: $10.14 Belize has the second highest gas prices in this hemisphere next to Uruguay. All our Central American neighbors enjoys gas at less than $7.45 per gallon.

While this corrupt UDP government uses fuel tax as their life blood, our country continues to suffer from stunted growth coupled with a sluggish and stagnant economy. “Barrownomics” has been and continues to be an utter failure. Eleven years in, this administration has demonstrated their complete incompetence in managing our economy. Since forming government in February 2008, they have taxed, ‘barrowed’ and spent with very little to show for the over 15 billion dollars entrusted to them by the Belizean people. That this government is an utter and complete failure is without question. Fuel Prices are too high and the UDP has been in power and mismanaged our country for far too long. It is time to lower fuel prices and for the UDP to go. Me seh so…

Cuando el juicio al mexicano Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán comenzaba en Nueva York hace tres meses, quizá muchos asumían que un inexorable fallo de “culpable” pendía sobre su cabeza.

Sin embargo, el jurado ha transcurrido su primera semana de deliberaciones sin un veredicto y emitiendo varias notas con preguntas específicas o pedidos para revisar pruebas.

Roo.-Lunes 11 de Febrero 2019 Este Febrero, 56 cruceros trasatlánticos llegarán a las costas de Mahahual, con aproximadamente 165 mil turistas; el Symphony Of The Seas (Sinfonía de los Mares), el más grande del mundo, atracará en dos ocasiones.

“Es una buena temporada de cruceros para Mahahual, los turistas que llegan dejan grandes beneficios a los negocios en zona de playas, a los taxistas, a todo el sector económico, y también los atractivos arqueológicos de toda la zona sur y el centro”.

Resaltó que el mes de enero tuvo un cierre benéfico para la economía local, tal como se había previsto con la programación de los 58 cruceros y la llegada de una cifra mayor de turistas; en ese período se estimó en más de 180 mil cruceristas.

El formulario de veredicto consta de ocho páginas con 53 decisiones a marcar. Además de establecer si Guzmán es culpable o no de cada uno de los cargos, el jurado debe indicar si el gobierno probó diversas violaciones.

Y eso puede llevar más de cuatro días de deliberaciones como los transcurridos hasta ahora.

Sólo el primero y mayor de los cargos, de involucramiento en una empresa criminal continua, incluye 27 presuntas violaciones cometidas por el Chapo en meses concretos, de 1989 a 2014.

En lo que parece un intento de determinar varias de esas violaciones, el jurado pidió el jueves revisar el testimonio del narco colombiano Juan Carlos Ramírez Abadía, alias Chupeta, sobre 10 cargamentos de cocaína que envió al cartel de Sinaloa de Guzmán entre 2003 y 2005.

Esto incluye libros de contabilidad que llevaba Chupeta sobre esos envíos, que denominaba “Juanitas” y que, según la fiscalía, movieron 55 toneladas de cocaína de Colombia rumbo a EE. UU. Pero el jurado también pidió el miércoles consultar cientos de páginas de testimonios de otros exmiembros del cartel de Sinaloa como Jesús el Rey Zambada, Vicente Zambada y Dámaso Licenciado López.

Y el martes solicitó revisar los testimonios completos de los narcos colombianos Alex y Jorge Cifuentes, así como de un agente de la Patrulla Fronteriza de EE. UU. que participó en una incautación de marihuana.

Por qué los integrantes del jurado han pedido en su integridad esos testimonios, que en algunos casos duraron días, y no apenas pasajes concretos de los mismos es otra cuestión que intriga a quienes siguen el juicio.

Por otro lado, han aparecido preguntas específicas del jurado.

“Si los miembros de un cartel de la droga son asesinados por un cartel opositor por motivos personales, ¿puede considerarse esto como un crimen de narcotráfico?”, fue una de esas interrogantes.

El juez que conduce el caso, Brian

Cogan, respondió que “si los motivos del asesinato son totalmente personales, no relacionados con el tráfico de drogas”, no constituye un crimen de narcotráfico.

“Serio” Los expertos creen que el jurado puede estar examinando en detalle lo que el propio gobierno ha definido como una “avalancha de evidencia” contra Guzmán, para decidir qué pruebas respaldan cada cargo o violación.

“Este jurado es realmente serio acerca de su trabajo, por eso hacen eso y no dicen simplemente que van a encontrar a este narco culpable de todo porque lo quiera el gobierno”, señala Heroy.

También advierte de que es probable que existan dudas sobre la credibilidad de algunos testigos de la fiscalía o que haya diferencias entre los miembros del jurado sobre el veredicto.

“Sucede con bastante frecuencia que hay miembros del jurado que solicitan pruebas para intentar convencer a otro miembro del jurado”, sostiene.

La defensa procuró desde el inicio del juicio cuestionar la credibilidad de los 14 testigos cooperantes presentados por el gobierno, en su gran mayoría exsocios o colaboradores de Guzmán que buscan reducir sus propias sentencias.

“Si tienen una duda, apodérense de ella. No la dejen ir. Sujétense a ella como si estuvieran sujetándose a la vida”, pidió Jeffrey Lichtman, uno de los abogados de el Chapo, en sus alegatos finales al jurado.

Sin embargo, además de varios testigos, la fiscalía presentó pruebas materiales contundentes, como una serie de grabaciones de llamadas interceptadas a Guzmán donde habla sobre negocios de drogas, sobornos, violencia o cómo tratar con la policía.

“En el transcurso de las 10 semanas, el gobierno ha probado los 10 cargos más allá de una duda razonable”, afirmó la fiscal Andrea Goldbarg en sus alegatos finales.

Pero mientras no surja un veredicto, existe la posibilidad -aunque sea remota- de que haya un jurado en desacuerdo o que el Chapo sea absuelto, en cuyo caso debería responder a cargos que enfrenta en otros distritos de EE. UU. y seguiría preso.

Otra opción es que el jurado llegue a un acuerdo sobre algunos de los 10 cargos, y no la totalidad de ellos, lo que, en la práctica, podría no implicar gran diferencia con un veredicto de culpabilidad total.

“El problema con un veredicto dividido es que no necesariamente ayuda mucho a la defensa”, explica Heroy. “Es una especie de victoria simbólica superar algunos cargos, pero los otros cargos tienen sentencias que pueden ser de cadena perpetua”.

El compromiso no es solo lucha antinarco, dice Estados Unidos

La Embajada recuerda que el éxito en su relación con Guatemala depende de otras acciones Prensa Libre: Guatemala Lunes 11 de Febrero 2019 Un vocero de esa misión diplomática dijo a Prensa Libre que la relación bilateral “solo puede ser exitosa si ambos países comparten un compromiso con una gran variedad de programas para mejorar la prosperidad, seguridad, y gobernanza para todos los guatemaltecos”.

El 31 de enero pasado, el secretario de Inteligencia Estratégica del Estado, Mario Duarte, adversó los cuestionamientos que Estados Unidos hizo sobre el uso de los Jeep J8 que circularon frente a la Cicig y la Embajada de ese país. Además, cuestionó las cifras sobre el trasiego de droga reportado por varios informes generados por ese país.

Las declaraciones genreraron críticas de parte de congresistas y senadores demócratas en EE. UU. y partir de ambos hechos este medio solicitó información acerca del apoyo financiero que EE. UU. ha otorgado a Guatemala para la lucha contra el narcotráfico, a lo que se respondió: “En los años fiscales 2016-2018, la Sección de Asuntos Antinarcóticos y Aplicación de la Ley comprometió más de US$25 millones —unos Q193 millones 785 mil 750— para programas antidrogas en Guatemala”.

La respuesta aclara que la lucha contra las drogas es solo una parte de la relación bilateral.

EE. UU. “está comprometido a luchar contra el narcotráfico en Guatemala y en toda Latinoamérica, y la lucha antidrogas es una parte importante de nuestra relación bilateral. Sin embargo, esta lucha es solo una parte de la relación bilateral más amplia”, se indicó.

La Embajada resalta que el financiamiento que ese país ha otorgado para los otros tres compromisos de la agenda bilateral es de US$739 millones —unos Q5 mil 728 millones 306 mil 770— en los años fiscales 2016-2018.

El mensaje El excanciller Fernando Carrera comenta que la declaración de la Embajada aclara que no basta solo con que el Gobierno coopere con la lucha específica contra las drogas, y que esta debe estar conectada con otros temas, como lucha contra la corrupción y la impunidad.

“Es en ese campo más amplio de apoyo a la lucha en general, contra la corrupción y combate a la pobreza que se percibe menos cooperación”, dijo.

El Pais: San Jose, Costa Rica: Martes 12 de Febrero 2019 Hace unas semanas en una recepción a diputados del Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN) en su casa, el expresidente de Costa Rica Óscar Arias dejaba ver su ánimo desbaratado. Una causa judicial por presunta prevaricación le colocaba, a sus 78 años en el banquillo de los acusados. Acostumbrado a vivir de las glorias de su Nobel de la Paz de 1987, de sus 70 doctorados honoris causa por todo el mundo y de la versión dulce de las dos ocasiones que gobernó en este país centroamericano que siempre se le quedó pequeño, era un duro golpe para Arias. La sospecha judicial por corrupción era lo peor que le podía ocurrir a un político acostumbrado a ganarlo todo, pensaba.

En los dos días siguientes, cuatro mujeres más contaron por distintas vías experiencias de vio-

lencia o acoso sexual que, aseguran, vivieron con el expresidente incluso antes de tener fama internacional.

Una segunda acusación penal llegó al final de esta semana: la ex reina de belleza Yasmín Morales relató cómo Arias la contactó por redes sociales en 2015, la invitó a su casa para regalarle un libro suyo y allí le tocó los senos y la besó a la fuerza. Su abogado dice que ve “cierto patrón de conducta” sexual. Morales

no lo inculpó antes, afirma, porque nadie le hubiera creído. Pero ahora ve un ambiente distinto; un ambiente que es, también, un infierno para Arias.

La noticia causó sorpresa en los círculos políticos ticos. Por el contenido y, sobre todo, por el atrevimiento de denunciar y divulgar: nadie imaginó que Arias alcanzaría a ver publicadas historias relacionadas a la incontinencia sexual que por décadas había sido objeto de rumores entre sus fieles, sus conocidos y sus críticos.

Solo se recuerda el episodio público de octubre de 1986, cuando la vedetteespañola María José Nieto, conocida como Maripepa, llegó con escolta oficial hasta el despacho presidencial donde la esperaba Arias y del que la mujer salió “un poco turbada”, según la crónica de ese día en el diario La Nación. Pero sus actos se consideraban entonces simples travesuras, lejos de los actos de violencia sexual de los que ahora le acusan una doctora y una ex reina de belleza. La primera es hija de una exdiputada muy cercana a Arias; la segunda tuvo serios problemas para encontrar un abogado que llevase el caso, tras la negativa de cuatro letrados que no quisieron verse las caras con el expresidente y que le recomendaron que no siguiese adelante con la acusación.

Cooperar con una entidad autónoma que provea una visión externa del Plan Alianza para la Prosperidad.

Combatir la corrupción, incluyendo la investigación y persecución de actuales y anteriores funcionarios que se crea que son corruptos.

Implementar reformas policíacas y programas para mejorar la transparencia y fortalecer las instituciones, incluyendo aumentar la capacidad e independencia del sistema judicial y el Ministerio Público.

Implementar una política que asegure a las comunidades, la sociedad civil —incluyendo indígenas y otros grupos marginados— y los gobiernos locales ser consultados en el desarrollo y la participación de actividades del Plan.

Atacar las actividades de pandillas y el crimen organizado.

Investigar y perseguir a personal del Gobierno, incluyendo policías y militares que se cree que han violado los derechos humanos.

Cooperar con las comisiones contra la impunidad y la corrupción y con los entes regionales de derechos humanos.

Apoyar programas para la reducción de la pobreza, expandir la educación y el entrenamiento vocacional para los jóvenes en riesgo, promover trabajos y crecimiento económico en áreas de migración.

Implementar un plan con metas y calendarios para crear una fuerza policial civil y terminar el rol de militares en la política interna.

Proteger el derecho de los partidos de oposición, periodistas, sindicatos, defensores de derechos humanos y otros activistas de sociedad civil para operar sin interferencia.

Incrementar los ingresos del Gobierno, implementar una reforma fiscal y el fortalecimiento de las aduanas.

Resolver disputas comerciales, incluyendo los reclamos territoriales, entre entidades de EE. UU. y el Gobierno.

Within minutes of the accident, a viral video of the woman’s bloodied, half nude body lying on the pavement circulated via social media. This is not the first time disturbing & violent videos of this nature have gone viral.

With today’s smart cellular phone technological capabilities and easy internet access, information can be shared with a million people within a matter of minutes. It puts the world at the palm of one’s fingertips with its ad-

vanced capabilities that is beyond the imagination.

Face Book, Messenger and whattsapp are three of the most popularly used apps in Belize. Since last year there has been the creation of several news groups who use these apps as their medium. This newspaper has found one Administrator (Admin) who manages 8 whattsapp news groups and 2 Face Book Messenger news groups. On Monday this Admin said he opened a new group and by Thursday morning had a little over three hundred members. He puts his total amount of members combined from all his groups at roughly 8 thousand. Just imagine one Admin has access to this amount of members at a “CLICK AND SEND” and, there are also countless

other Admins out there. Members who witness or on scene of any accident/incident simply use their cell phones to snap/record and send to the admin who then disseminate to other members and they in turn share with others, instantly.

This sharing can be positive and negative. Positive for example, if the police is looking for a suspect within minutes over 8 thousand people knows what the suspect looks like and is able to assist the police if is spotted. Negative for example, where in a matter of minutes a video was shared of the deceased woman lying on the pavement. Imagine seeing that image of your loved one in that position and even more, knowing that at just a CLICK AND SEND” over 8 thousand people have seen it too and by the end of the day that number could quadrupled. As a society are we so hungry for this sort of information which has resulted in our loss of compassion and humanity? We must stop condoning these horrendous acts of sharing negativity. Today it was the female accident victim lying on the pavement who is somebody’s family, tomorrow it could be your family!

19 “Slaying our Wings” By: Leslie Rodriguez Corozal Bay BYM Coordinator What triumphs lie ahead for our country when our wings are being slain before even wearing a graduation gown and holding a degree in our hands? Belize, often referred to as ‘Our Jewel’, is losing radiance as its soil sheds in blood of senseless murders across the country.

Most of our parents have arduously worked themselves in a country where job is limitless and of minimum wage to see our youths being forsaken one by one. We often dream of striving to success to repay all their unconditional love and sacrifice, instead it seems we are repaying them with heart aches and shedding of tears. How I wish every parent would receive a phone call saying, “Hi mom; I have just been granted a Scholarship abroad!” or “Hey dad!

The Coach has just called out my name for the school’s varsity team.”

However, they have been receiving phone calls from the cops or hospitals of heart-wrenching news of their children being murdered, kidnapped, assaulted or shot wounded. Nevertheless, the worst-case scenario of a phone call occurs when our relatives must cope with one of our youths being the principal author of the crime scene.

Sunday, February 10th, 2019 has marked no difference as the nation wept over the murder of another promising youth. Characterized by many as humble and down to earth, he was a young star with a bright future ahead both athletically and academically. Families and friends left behind with agonizing pain, while social media enraged as an innocent life was taken away.

So, how can we trust our security system when many crimes are going unsolved? How Can we trust the court system when our judges’ ruling system has not been penalizing enough? How can we trust our leaders when their voices and actions have remained in silence when a youth gets taken down?

Many youths are now wondering if their wings to achieving their dreams will be slain before time.

Will more families need to weep behind a coffin instead of being somewhere else celebrating their children’s triumphs?

Our Country needs the right leaders to act and speak up! Enough is enough! If other countries can protest violent acts and poor governance, why must our country be of difference against senseless murders?

I stand by an image shared on social media: “IT IS TIME TO SAVE OUR YOUTHS!”

To motivate the majority vote: the youth By: osilbz@np Presently, Belize is comprised of a population where about 75 percent of its people are under the age of 35.

This fact is of crucial importance and should be examined because the differences of participation and the absence at the polls can have a heavy impact on election results with severe consequences.

Finding the means to entice the youth and to motivate them into participate in the electoral process is a great political challenge for the Opposition because it is the Party of Hope.

This call for voter participation to realize change Belize longs for.

At the polls, the greatest challenge will be to attract a high percentage of youth voter participation thus favouring such change. As we have seen in the three previous General Elections, and as we clear the way into 2020, this participation is viewed as a difficult goal. Trust has been lost in a totally broken system which might have scarred political morale for at least a generation.

This burden along with a lack of opportunities has had a crumbling effect on our social infrastructure. Our youth are living in an atmosphere of disbelief, helplessness and insecurity.

Since 2008, and three past general elections, the voter population has been disrespected by the Barrow administration and treated like a political commodity that can be bought. Basic social programs and opportunities have been ignored by this government. Their neglect has left our youth out in the cold, lost without a sense

of direction and that gives them no obvious reason which could convince them to vote without monetary compensation.

The cascade of scandals that have plagued this government, all against the backdrop of corruption, have not moved our Prime Minister Dean Barrow, to act to restrain these despicable acts. These acts have shaken the foundation of many if not all public institutions. The shady characters of politics, seen in the composition of this administration, is full of flaws and there is a serious lack of trust. Poverty and misery is entrenched in the lives of Belizeans, especially on our youth.

There is a marked difference in the social upbringing in the youth across Belize. Being young in Belize City is totally different than to be raised in other municipalities or rural areas. Ethnic separation and differences are fundamental factors. Integrating a few thousand youth with that diversity in Belize City is also notable. Some youth try to survive between the levels of self-importance granted by its members as in the gangland areas.

The educational factor is also an element of division, and all this is not the result of a voluntary or ill-intentioned attitude. They are simple realities, impossible to ignore but has been overlooked. Politics of the time has crept up to daily lives in the wrong way.

This population kaleidoscope in Belize City and the country as a whole needs to be impelled in the right direction. The UDP has lost this cultural mandate.

HOME INVASION/ MURDER EXPATS Belize City: Thursday 14th February 2019 By: Leticia Guerra Valentine’s Day is being celebrated world-wide but there is an elderly man whose heart and world have been ripped apart after he, and his wife were the victims of a vicious home invasion which resulted in his wife being murdered.

The heinous crime happened sometime around 9 pm in the quiet residential area of Oasis located in Consejo Shores Village, Corozal District. Several Expats reside in different housing communities throughout Belize. They want to spend their retirement in this supposedly peaceful, tranquil haven.

Gary and Elizabeth Rousseau were at home when a burglar or/ burglars gained entry to their home through the bathroom window. It is not clear as yet if anything was stolen but, during the horrible ordeal, both husband and wife were stabbed several times. Elizabeth, 74 years old was stabbed several to the neck and breast area. She died while being transported to the Northern Regional Hospital. Gary is receiving treatment at the Northern Regional Hospital.

Last year August we reported on retired American National Sherris Stringer, 67 years old, who was residing in Hopkins, Stann Creek. Stringham was missing for some days before her body was found under a bridge along the Southern Highway.

Three teenagers were charged in connection with her murder.

OUT True Young Leaders Stepping to the Plate

Editor Sir, As a resident of Belize City, I have noticed the innovative spirit of the PUP City Council that has only been in office for almost a year but have embarked on tall-order initiatives, which paints a true picture that it is “all bout the people” indeed.

No doubt the good residents of Belize City made a wise decision when we stopped all the madness the residents have had to live through for twelve long years.

During the UDP City Council from 2006 to March 2018, residents got the reconstruction of Concrete Street with absolutely no proper drainage system; Canals were all clogged up or fill of silt, especially the Collet Canal that empties into the sea, all we heard from the UDP for almost three years is that they were waiting for a Spanish to Consulting firm to make studies and a Recommendation.

No sooner did the New PUP City Council come in; one of their first priorities was to dredge out the Collet Canal and clean the others which are flowing beautifully today.

The City drains are up kept and the continuous bushing of the tall bushes together with Street maintenance.

This shows leadership qualities that benefit city residents. Last week when Deputy Mayor, Oscar Arnold announced his candidacy for Collet division, the faces of hope glittered across the City glowed because that is the quality of persons the country need.
