candidates who have offered themselves in service of the people of this country on a PUP ticket. That is good, because it demonstrates clearly that the UDP is running scared. They are afraid because they see the writing on the wall. They know that the people have gotten enough of the abuse

Wagner is joined by a dream team of serious, committed and capable Belizeans - success stories in their own fields who have shown that they have the experience and skills to repair the mess left by this UDP crowd who got carried away with serving themselves and forgot that they were there to serve the people.

Under the UDP, the Southside of the city has been completely ignored and the entire city has been neglected. This is the team with the vision to restore and rebuild, with focus on all the residents of the city and not just the select, privileged few.

With the launch of the PUP 11 in Belize City, the PUP is READY. All 67 candidates are in place and all slates are on the ground meeting with the people.

While the UDP's strategy has been to attack, the PUP's message has been one of service and change. The people have been neglected for too long, and that neglect is clear to see in every corner of this nation. Belizeans in the city still do not have a home of their own, just shacks in swamps. Belizeans in the city do not have electricity and running water and toilets. In 2017 Belizeans are still forced to use pigtail buckets as toilets.

And the situation is much the same across the country - neglect of our people. No jobs. No opportunities.

Poverty. Frustration. Anger. While the privileged UDPs have prospered.

In Belize City the UDP has been in City Hall for 4 terms. And yet our people live like this. The UDP has been in Belmopan for three terms, and while they have all become millionaires, our people have gotten poorer.

It is time for a change. It is time for real commitment to the people, for good governance, for a Belize that works for everyone. The PUP is that change. Get Dih Sense.

Fuel Prices WILL NOT Go Down!

Thursday, 09 November 2017 "Give me another few days, (fuel) going down." Dean Barrow, October 18th, 2017 On October 18th, Prime Minister Dean Barrow asked for a few more days after which Belizeans would be treated to a significant decrease in the pump prices of fuel.

Since then, the pump price of Premium Fuel has not gone down not even one red cent. The cost of Regular Fuel went down by only 16 cents

Sedi Elrington confirmed to the nation via the media that the Government of Belize will not support a motion brought in the Senate for the amendment of the Maritime Areas Act. In an unprecedented move, last week the People’s United Party filed the motion in the Senate to debate the long-delayed amendment. If approved, it would mean that Belize will claim its territorial seas and exclusive economic zone, something it should have done since 2008, under a UDP administration, when it became clear that there could be no negotiated settlement with Guatemala.

Former Foreign Minister Eamon Courtenay confirmed to the media this week that “the People's United Party was not in Government in 2008 when the decision was taken by the parties that the matter would go to Court if

That can be the only basis. I am assuming that they will be more mature than that. I'm assuming that they will be more patriotic than that. I'm hoping that they will do the right thing."

At the Belize Times, we maintain that the actions of Foreign Minister Sedi Elrington bear close watching, since he has consistently made comments and decisions which are to Guatemala’s benefit, and which hurt Belize’s position and put our territorial integrity at risk. We need only look at the Sarstoon for the perfect example.

Barrow Spins Straw into Gold for Ashcroft

Thursday, 09 November 2017 As we go to press, the Barrow administration has raped the foreign reserves of the country to make a payment of $78M to companies owned by Michael Ashcroft, longtime friend and client of Prime Minister Dean Barrow. According to Financial Secretary Joseph Waight, it will take the country approximately TWO YEARS to replenish our reserves after that payout, and that is dependent on a lot of factors. After the payment was made, only three months of import cover remain in our reserves, considered the absolute threshold.

It is important to note that this payment, in US dollars, and the first amount paid to Ashcroft companies for the nationalization of BTL, means that Belizeans have paid over half a BILLION dollars for a company which is considered a dinosaur in telecommunications in Belize. It is also important to note that the more than half a BILLION-dollar payment is a direct result of a secret agreement between Dean Barrow and Lord Michael Ashcroft in September

2015 in Miami.

In that agreement, after seven years of litigation and calling Lord Ashcroft all manner of things and declaring that he would fight this white devil with every breath left in his body, Mr. Barrow suddenly, without telling anybody but his law partner, goes to Miami and delivers to Lord Ashcroft a blank check – no ceiling, no arguments, no limitations – A BLANK CHECK. But instead of being desolate at the thought of paying out what turned out to be around $557M to Ashcroft companies, Barrow was positively euphoric. He patted himself on the back to no end because in his agreement, there was a clause which ensured that all that payout arising as a result of the Accommodation Agreement would be given back to the government for the benefit of the people of Belize. While Barrow’s cheerleaders, brought in for the occasion, broke into joyous celebration, all right-thinking individuals were cynical. It just didn’t make sense that Ashcroft would win this great victory and then just decide to

hand back a hundred million or two to Belize. And we were right.

The CCJ scoffed at and scorned this secret agreement allegedly penned by the very same Dean Barrow. Any paralegal could likely have drafted a better agreement. It was a joke, but a sick, cruel one. And in the end, because the agreement was so poorly drafted, Belizeans have had to pay another USD$78M. Interestingly, Mr. Barrow last week was positively flippant as he stated that they would pay in one lump sum – no instalments, no haggling. Let’s just pay. How cute is that?

It is past time for an impartial Commission of Inquiry to examine Mr. Barrow’s dealings with Lord Ashcroft, from the nationalization to today. It is way too suspicious that in all these years, those close to the Prime Minister have made millions from the litigation and from BTL. It is way too suspicious that Mr. Barrow suddenly decided to give Ashcroft a blank check, and that the agreement was so badly written that Lord Ashcroft has ended up making much

You have given them so much and they have given back so little.

So that while none of them sleep on the Southside of Belize City, ALL five of them have amassed millions while you have been burdened with more and more suffering and cruel poverty.

To me this choice that you all have is an easy one - Go with option 2 and fight like hell for Belize. Fight for Bernard Wagner and this Belize City team because they sincerely care about you. Fight for the rebirth of Belize City by voting for the PUP City Council Team.

When you do that you will be fighting for those mothers and fathers who have buried their children because of the cruel poverty that has led to the despair that causes violence.

Join the Rebirth and let us fight for the beautiful children on the Southside of Belize City who have been let down by their reckless and greedy UDP representatives. We can fix what is wrong in our country. We can fix what is wrong with Southside Belize City. We can fix it by voting for Bernard Wagner and the candidates of the PUP. Yes - it will be challenging and because we know this we have called Bernard Wagner and this team into service. We have made it abundantly clear to each and every one of them that this is about one thing - making a positive change in the lives of the good people of Belize City. Our team was chosen for that purpose and because they are men and women who care about people. All of them grew up in this city; all of them invested their lives here. They never left; they never abandoned you. They were here doing as much good as they can for as many of you as they can.

My friends, we in the PUP want this to be your time. We want you to have jobs. We want your children to go to good schools so that they can get a proper education. We want you to live healthy lives and we believe you deserve a decent home.

We can do these things together, I know we can and I believe with all my heart that we can make Belize City a kinder and fairer city for people from the Southside and the Northside.

Across this country there has been a sweeping cry for change, as our people in every single municipality have been neglected by the UDP. IN every city and town in this nation, normal Belizeans have gotten poorer and poorer while the not normal Belizeans, those in Cabinet and their family members and cronies have gotten richer and richer. This UDP has gotten so arrogant that nobody can tell them anything. They have gotten so greedy that they will run this country into the ground to enrich themselves.

It is time for real governance, time for a real change, and I commit that the PUP will bring that change. With the guidance of our Creator we will do it with this incredible team in Belize City, and with our dynamic, committed teams across the country.

So join us, be a part of the Rebirth and together let us build a Belize that works for everyone.

Questions to Ministers

Would the Member for Queen Square and Prime Minister please confirm or deny reports that he gave Imer Hernandez the bloated $8M Faber’s Road contract only after Imer threatened to expose some of the other shady contracts and dealings he has been a part of?

Would the Member for Queen Square and Prime Minister please confirm or deny allegations that he deliberately sold out the Belizean people and orchestrated this whole BTL fiasco with Lord Ashcroft so they both could both get richer? Could the Prime Minister also confirm or deny credible reports that he, as Lord Ashcroft’s attorney at the time, crafted the first Accommodation Agreement which he now calls odious?

Would the Member for Queen Square and Prime Minister please confirm or deny reports that his son, Anwar Barrow, will be receiving close to $10M to ‘oversee’ the new BTL fibre project? Could he also confirm that he has gone begging to Taiwan again to finance this project, and say what Taiwan is getting in return?

Would the Member for Pickstock and Minister of Foreign Affairs please confirm or deny reports that he has been paid by the Guatemalan government to ensure that Belize has a losing case if and when the matter finally goes before the ICJ? If so, could he say how much, and if those monies were deposited to his foreign bank account?

Would the Member for Orange Walk East and junior Minister of Police please say how he has been able to afford a new gas station and radio station so soon after entering politics?

Would the Member for Dangriga and Minister of the Public Service please say if he ever intends to come back to Cabinet? And if he does, could he please say how he will deal with those Ministers including his colleague from Collet who he accused of buying the convention in Dangriga and being racist toward his people?

Would the Member for Cayo Central and Minister of Works please say why he is known as the ‘three-way Minister,’ and why he and his CEO are considered one of the most corrupt and greedy duos in government today? And since we’re on the topic, would the Minister and his CEO be willing to release accurate records of their holdings (land and money) attained in recent years?

Would the Member for Corozal Bay and Minister of Health please confirm or deny reports that he recently charged a prospective investor $50,000 just to meet with him? Would the Minister of Health also confirm or deny reports that when that investor offered to sponsor lucrative medical scholarships to Belizeans he was told that the money should instead be paid to the Minister?

Would the Member for Collet and Minister of…aww hell doesn’t even make any sense to ask this woman beater anything! You can stick a fork in him cause he’s done.

Payout…

According to the news last night the insurance company paid the widow of Gilbert Myers more than $100,000 and so she wrote to the DPP requesting that the criminal matter against Alfonso Noble be dropped. That’s justice in Belize, apparently. For a few dollars more the fact that a living, breathing, productive man was killed by a drunken idiot who then stood over the body taking pictures of him taking his last breaths should just be swept under the rug. A payout for the wife, no justice for the victim and the killer just walks away without expending any effort at all, except to joke about the accident and share the pics. My lerd. I hope that karma comes calling with a vengeance and lives up to her name as a vicious bitch.

That Explains It… So I’ve been hearing this little thing out of the office of the Yoda-looking leader of the country – no disrespect meant to Star Wars fans. Like me, many Belizeans have been wondering how the very unimpressive Imer Hernandez got that bloated contract for Faber’s Road - $8M for one mile of street. So this well-placed little bird claims that Imer was pissed because he bid for the new bypass at the 8-mile community and Cisco got it instead. So he allegedly visited Yoda’s office in Belmopan and complained, claiming that he’d bid lower than Cisco on the bypass. That complaint fell on deaf ears so Imer then as a last resort threatened to tell all about a whole bunch of shady contracts. I wasn’t there so I don’t know, but I hear that another contractor had already bid $7M for Faber’s Road and had been approved but the PM, in a bind, was forced to change plans and give Faber’s Road to Imer for $8M. Hmmm. Makes perfect sense to me. Now that’s a story I can swallow Mr. Moody.

My word. What can I say about the Guatemalan…sorry Belizean Foreign Minister? I don’t even know. A while ago somebody told me that after Carlos Raul was booted out Guatemala called Sedi and offered him the position of Foreign Minister since he has been doing a much better job of promoting Guatemala’s interests than Carlos Raul. At the time I sipped my beer and laughed politely. And I wondered why the person who told me this didn’t laugh. Now I’m thinking maybe it was true. Hell, I’m wondering if Sedi didn’t accept the damned position. I swear.

Guatemala is going to referendum with a map that shows Belize as part of its territory and our top dog in this diplomatic race in which our sovereignty hangs in the balance doesn’t seem to care. #sighs. Can we please get these people out of office quick, fast and hurry…like before we become a district of Guatemala? No joke.

Gangsters…

It’s the absolute cutest thing. Check it out. In March Yoda stood up in the House and presented his budget. He explained that since he and his Ministers had stolen a lot of shit and robbed the country blind he had to raise taxes. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Anyway, one of those tax measures was implementing GST on electricity bills higher than $100. Okay, cool! We figure well our bills are below $100 so YES, we get weh. But how wen in April electricity bills just start spiking for no good damned reason. In March and all the months leading up to March, you pay $70-$80 a month for electricity. But in April you pay $120. And in May $130. And in June all your appliances are blown out but your bill goes to $140. WTF! People, check your stats. No joke. This is a government of gangsters. Every one of them.

Rebirth…

There will be a PUP municipal team in City Hall soon. I have no doubt about that. Neither does the unhappy UDP mayoral aspirant Dion Leslie. Word is that on Saturday night after the PUP launch he held an emergency meeting with his campaign team to brainstorm on how to improve his image. See, Dion isn’t the most likeable fellow. He’s seen as elitist.

Besides that, he hasn’t done shit for the city in all this time. The closest he ever got to associating with the common folks was a photo op or two just before the UDP convention recently. And Dion understands that the PUP team isn’t his only problem. He’s got to deal with my personal favourite superhero Philloughby, who’s been absent since the Convention. And no, absence has not made the heart grow fonder. Philloughby has been heard suggesting that the money Dion spends on his gambling addiction may be the reason sanitation workers are never paid on time. Hell hath no fury like a superhero scorned. Anyway. What it is, is what it is. The best is finally coming with the PUP. Wait for it.

EDITORIAL FOOLISH FIRE

A will-o'-the-wisp or "foolish fire" is an atmospheric ghost light seen by travellers at night, especially over bogs, swamps, or marshes. It resembles a flickering lamp and is said to recede if approached, drawing travellers from the safe paths.

It is impossible to reconcile the Prime Minister Dean Barrow of today with the aspiring leader of 2008, that humble man who begged us to imagine the possibilities under his leadership. He spoke of inclusivity, inviting the social partners to govern with a new UDP. He promised transparency and accountability and NO corruption. He promised an empowered Senate. He promised that ALL Belizeans would be respected and treated fairly – that ALL Belizeans would have a voice in this new Belize he would lead. He promised that he would listen.

But the possibilities imagined by right-thinking Belizeans and organizations who believed this shyster turned snake-oil salesman’s tale of a good-governance utopia never become reality. His humility vanished as if it had never been, along with his professed distaste of corruption, to be chopped left and right with that now infamous mythical machete. His promises of inclusion were forgotten just as swiftly, along with commitments of transparency and accountability and good governance. That charming, sincere bastion of integrity who begged for our votes before that fateful election in 2008 disappeared like an elusive will-o’-the-wisp.

What came in his place is the man who occupies a seafront mansion and has multiple luxury vehicles and bodyguards aplenty. He has stated with no shame, this doppelganger, that he has never visited the home of any voter because he has somebody who does that for him. He does not need to associate with the common man or woman or child on the streets. What we have today, and since 2008, is an arrogant man who is convinced beyond a doubt, reasonable or otherwise, that his word is law. He believes that he is a brilliant man and that all in his blood line are brilliant beyond compare. He has used and abused his power as ultimate ruler to ensure that his family members prosper. See, they are entitled to that because they are his and he is king. He has ignored all cries of nepotism from all quarters because nobody should dare to question his decisions.

Mr. Barrow, recently and in years past, has come into question for some of his absolutely atrocious decisions. And he has ignored every criticism and disregarded every query. Where the questions persisted, he has directed his political dogs to attack and intimidate and insult and ridicule. Do you realize that at every press conference held by the Prime Minister there are hecklers and thugs brought in to harass the media? That is the measure of this man we call Prime Minister. He does not care what anybody else has to say.

He did it in the case of Elvin Penner. He, this maximum ruler, became Judge when he proclaimed that there was no legal guilt in anything done by Penner. This criminal orchestrated the sale of a Belizean passport to another criminal who had never come to Belize. He was caught. All the evidence was there. And Mr. Barrow declares that there is no legal guilt so the world stands still and Penner is good to go. That is the measure of our Prime Minister.

He is doing it with his best friend Gaspar Vega. This damned thief blatantly, brazenly used his power as Minister of Natural Resources to steal from the people. He took away from the people of Belize and gave to his son, to his wife, to his brothers and other family members. Thousands of acres of prime property were transferred into the hands of the Vega clan in a clearly orchestrated scheme – no big secret. The evidence is there. It’s all in black and white. Any cursory, half-hearted investigation by a rookie cop would land Vega in jail. But Mr. Barrow says he has not seen those documents. And because he has not seen them, obviously they don’t exist. So that is the end of that.

The arrogance of Mr. Barrow, and by extension those around him, has grown to unbelievable proportions. Just as the Prime Minister has disrespected and disregarded the opinions of every single social partner when they dare to disagree with him, so too have those he commands. In the very same week his Deputy Prime Minister Patrick Faber attacked teachers, his Attorney-General attacked the Church – both very personal and vile attacks. And like Mr. Barrow, they feel that it is okay to do that. Mr. Peyrefitte went so far as to say that the Church has no moral authority to question the government. Apparently the government in all its majesty is beyond question.

Mr. Barrow has said it time and time again. Those with the majority rule. The UDP has the majority of representatives in the House so they will rule. Except that somewhere along the way those representatives forgot that they were not elected to rule – they were elected to serve. There is little doubt that it is the arrogance of this UDP, led by the most arrogant Prime Minister, which will speed their downfall.

Because like the foolish fire, they will fade away soon enough.

n fuego fatuo o " fuego de los tontos" es una luz fantasma atmosférica vista por los viajeros en la noche, sobre todo en pantanos, ciénagas o fangales. Se asemeja a una lámpara parpadeante y se dice que retroceden si se le acerca, alejando a los viajeros de los senderos seguros.

Es imposible encontrar semejanza al Primer Ministro Dean Barrow de hoy con el aspirante a líder del 2008, aquel hombre humilde que nos pidió que nos imagináramos las posibilidades bajo su liderazgo.

Habló de inclusión, invitando a los interlocutores sociales para gobernar con un nuevo UDP. Prometió transparencia y rendición de cuentas y NO corrupción. Prometió un Senado empoderado. Prometió que todos los beliceños serían respetados y tendrían trato justo y que todos los beliceños tendrían una voz en este nuevo Belice que él lideraría. Prometió escuchar.

Pero las posibilidades que se imaginaron los beliceños y organizaciones de bien que le creyeron el cuento a este embaucador convertido en vendedor de aceite de serpiente de una realidad utópica de buena gobernabilidad nunca se realizó. Su humildad y su aversión profesa hacia la corrupción que sería troceado a diestra y siniestra con el ahora tristemente célebre y mítico machete desaparecieron como si nunca hubieran existido. Sus promesas de inclusión fueron olvidadas rápidamente, junto con compromisos de transparencia y rendición de cuentas y buena gobernabilidad. Este bastión encantador y sincero de integridad que rogó por nuestros votos antes de esa fatídica elección en 2008 desapareció como un duende escurridizo.

Lo que vino en su lugar es el hombre que vive una mansión frente al mar y cuenta con varios vehículos de lujo y guardaespaldas en abundancia. Ha declarado con ninguna vergüenza este mellizo malvado que él nunca ha visitado la casa de ningún votante porque tiene quien lo hace para él. No tiene necesidad de asociarse con el hombre ni mujer común ni niño/a en las calles. Lo que tenemos hoy y desde el 2008, es un hombre arrogante que está convencido sin duda alguna, con o sin razón, que su palabra es ley. Él cree que es un hombre brillante y que todos en su línea de sangre son los más ilustres. Ha usado y abusado de su poder como líder máximo para asegurarse de que los miembros de su familia prosperen. Vera usted, tienen derecho a eso porque ellos son suyos y él es rey. Ignora los gritos de nepotismo provenientes de todas partes porque nadie debe atreverse a cuestionar sus decisiones.

Al Sr. Barrow, recientemente y en años anteriores, se le ha puesto en tela de juicio por algunas de sus decisiones absolutamente atroces. Pero ha ignorado toda crítica y no le ha prestado atención a ninguna pregunta. Cuando han persistido las preguntas, ha mandado a los perros políticos a atacar e intimidar e insultar y ridiculizar. ¿Se han dado cuenta que en cada Conferencia de Prensa celebrada por el Primer Ministro hay provocadores y matones traídos para hostigar a los medios de comunicación? Es la talla de este hombre que llamamos Primer Ministro. No le importa lo que nadie tenga que decir.

Lo hizo en el caso de Elvin Penner. Este gobernante máximo, llegó a ser juez cuando proclamó que no había ninguna culpa legal en nada hecho por Penner. Este criminal orquestó la venta de un pasaporte beliceño a otro delincuente que nunca había llegado a Belice. Fue atrapado. Toda la evidencia estaba allí. Y el Sr. Barrow declara que no hay culpabilidad legal por lo que el mundo se detiene y Penner no es culpable. Ésa es la talla de nuestro Primer Ministro.

Hace lo mismo por su mejor amigo Gaspar Vega. Este ladrón condenado abiertamente y descaradamente utilizó su poder como Ministro de Recursos Naturales para robarle a la gente. Le robo a la gente de Belice y le dio a su hijo, a su esposa, a sus hermanos y otros miembros de la familia. Miles de acres de propiedad importantes fueron transferidos a manos del clan Vega en un plan claramente orquestado – ningún gran secreto. La evidencia está allí. Todo está en blanco y negro. Cualquier investigación superficial, hecha a medias por un policía novato llevaría a Vega a la cárcel. Pero el Sr. Barrow dice que no ha visto los documentos. Y porque él no los ha visto, obviamente no existen. Y eso es el fin de eso.

La arrogancia del Sr. Barrow, y por extensión de ésos alrededor de él, ha crecido a proporciones increíbles. Así como el Primer Ministro le ha faltado el respeto e ignorado las opiniones de cada interlocutor social que se atreve a discrepar con él, así hacen aquellos bajo su mando. En la misma semana su Vice Primer Ministro Patrick Faber atacó a los profesores, su Procurador General atacó a la iglesia – ambos ataques muy personales y viles. Y al igual que el Sr. Barrow, ellos creen que hacer eso está bien. El Sr. Peyrefitte llegó al grado de decir que la Iglesia no tiene ninguna autoridad moral para cuestionar al gobierno. Al parecer al gobierno en toda su majestuosidad no se le puede cuestionar.

El Sr. Barrow lo ha dicho repetidamente. Los de la mayoría mandan. El UDP tiene la mayoría de los representantes en el parlamento por lo que ellos mandaran. Solo que en algún punto en el camino los representantes se olvidaron de que no fueron elegidos para mandar, fueron elegidos para servir. No cabe duda de que la arrogancia de este UDP, encabezada por el Primer Ministro más arrogante, será lo que acelerará su caída. Porque como el fuego de tontos, se desvanecerán muy pronto.

COUNTRY UNDER SIEGE Thursday, 09 November 2017 By the unofficial count of the Belize Times, there have been 127 murders since the start of the year, in what has already been one of the bloodiest years on record. In Belize City, the record for deaths on the Southside has already been broken, and both the politicians and cops have concluded that marijuana is to blame. Of course, that didn’t stop the government from decriminalizing the possession of marijuana, a move which the cops say complicates their job.

Just in the last week there have been four murders reported, the first in Belize City Friday night. Deidron McKay, 20, a mentally challenged man, was shot multiple times by a gunman as he was about to leave his home on Haynes Street. He was inside the yard and hadn’t even reached his gate when he was shot the first time. When he turned to run he was shot in the back.

According to Police, this murder was in retaliation for a shooting which injured four men the week before on Neal Penn Road.

In Orange Walk, at around the same time, two robbers entered P&P Supermarket and demanded money.

One of the gunmen reportedly went up to proprietor Babita Moryani and tried to grab her purse. Her son Amit Moryani tried to defend her and he was shot in the chest. His mother was also shot, but the bullet only grazed her head. Amit Moryani died while receiving treatment at the Northern Re-

On Monday, cops in San Pedro were called out to an unfinished building on the island at 7:00am and found the body of German national Raimund Adalbert Kobler, 52. Kobler, who had been living in San Pedro for the past five years, was last seen on his verandah at 10:00pm Sunday night. The building where his body was discovered was only a block away from his residence. He had an abrasion to the head which it is believed caused his death.

Also at 7:00am Monday morning, Benque cops visited an area known as Puga’s Farm at around Mile 26 on the Benque Road. There they found the body of Oscar Obando, 18.

Obando had been shot to the chest. Police have no leads in his murder.

Young People Matter

By Ivan Valencia BYM President This past week, I had the distinct pleasure of going to the Cayo District and meeting with the now Cayo-BYM team.

This took place at the Cayo Central PUP office, even under the rainy weather, with representation from Cayo Central, Cayo North, Cayo North East and Cayo West.

It is indeed wonderful when young people are interested in the works of their community. Among the different items discussed was the way forward for the BYM of which happy to say Mr. Karim Adle was given the vote of confidence to lead the Cayo BYM Team. The group expressed that the cries on the streets are that the young people are not being part of the decision making and that under this current administration the only thing that is experienced is political victimization, lack of educational or job opportunities and no social, cultural or sporting activities. They commented that while the town does have a recently rebuilt stadium and auditorium, they are just sitting structures. The BYM is prepared

to work hard and engage their community.

They are also prepared to take up an active role in the upcoming Municipal Elections because they are tired of the tyranny.

Also present was Mr. Danny Castellanos, PUP Mayoral candidate for Benque Viejo del Carmen. He spoke about the vast amount of support he has been receiving all residents of Benque Viejo Town on the campaign trail. He is confident that come March 7th 2017, he will have the trust and vote of the Benqueños. He particularly noted that the people are happy to see new faces in the PUP especially more young people involved.

You see ladies and gentlemen, this is not one or two speaking, you can go all across the country and the people are dissatisfied with this present administration.

They are saying WE TIAD! WE TIAD, WE TIAD! Change is imminent, but it can only take place with everyone involved.

There has been no attention to infrastructure, to zoning, to electrification projects, to land fill. There are many residents in the extensions who have to walk London Bridges to get to their homes, perched in the swamp.

In an interview just this week, when asked about his record in office, Leslie said, “I'm looking at the work that we've accomplished over the past 12 years in office nine years for myself, twelve with Deputy Samuels and what we plan to accomplish come for the nest 3 years.” Even the interviewer looked a little confused and was forced to point out the mess that the city is in

after Leslie referred to a transformation under the UDP. The fact is that the UDP City Council has failed, and Dion Leslie as Deputy Mayor has failed. The streets cemented when the Council had money to play with through a Municipal Bond and grants from Central Government have all broken up. The city floods with the slightest rain in areas which have never traditionally flooded. Sidewalks have completely deteriorated. Most drain covers are broken and are hazards to pedestrians. Grill covers on the streets have deteriorated and are hazards to vehicular traffic. And this is only in the few parts of the city which were touched by Leslie and the Council. In the Southside of the city nearly every street is filled with potholes. Parks and playgrounds are neglected.

That is the record of the UDP City Council. That is the record of Dion Leslie.

They have failed the people of this city and their day of reckoning will soon be here.

NORTHERN CAUCUS RESOLUTION

The PUP Northern Caucus met on Saturday, November 4, 2017 in the village of Trinidad in the Orange Walk South Constituency with representation of the nine constituencies. Cognizant of the importance of the Sugar Industry to the economy of the North and the country and aware of the challenges facing the industry the following resolution was passed in support of making the Industry a more efficient and viable one.

Be it resolved that the PUP Northern Caucus: 1. Supports an amendment to the Sugar Industry Act to include a provision for the establishment of a Marketing Committee that will include representation of all stake holders including the various Cane Farmers’ associations.

2. Supports the establishment of a ceiling to the sugar cane production of ASR. This ceiling is to protect the cane farmers of the North and to maintain the structure of industry as originally conceived.

3. Supports, in an effort for the industry to become more efficient, that the farmers must improve the transportation of the sugar cane to the mill in cost and organization. In addition the processor (BSI) must reduce the local handling costs of sugar since presently it is as or more expensive than the ocean freight.

09 9 Opposition Aims for City Hall

By Gilroy Usher, Sr. At a rally in Belize City on Saturday, November 4th, the Opposition People’s United Party introduced its dynamic eleven-member team for the municipality. The UDP council has controlled City Hall for over a decade.

So long have they been in power that they have become corrupt and arrogant, and see themselves as little gods who know everything. They do as they please and no longer listen to the concerns of the people. Nevertheless, the ruling party will not give up power at City Hall easily.

Fully aware of the challenging battle ahead for the municipality, the Opposition PUP has dug deep for the best possible candidates. It has been out of City Hall for almost twelve consecutive years from 2006. This time the PUP slate for CITCO is led

by Bernard Wagner - a businessman with 30 years experience in banking.

Mr. Wagner is also a big promoter of semi-pro sports which offers countless opportunities for city residents, especially the youth.

The slate includes four educators - Ryan Elijio, Delthrude Hylton, Dr. Candice Pitts - professor at the University of Belize and Albert Vaughan, who is an activist and former Belize Defense Force soldier. The slate also includes two young entrepreneurs Allan Pollard and Javier Castellanos.

The remaining four Councillor candidates are community activist Aisha Gentle, retired Public Officer Michael ‘Chips’ Norales, former banker Oscar Arnold and Micah Goodin – journalist at Amandala newspaper and student at Galen University.

Several members of the PUP slate for CITCO elections are from southside Belize City. In growing up, these particular persons had to sell bread, journey cakes and chips in their neighborhoods daily to assist their families in challenging financial times. The team therefore relates to both northside and southside residents well.

Gentle, Pollard and Goodin are all intelligent but young candidates who if successful will guarantee the youths of the city a voice at City Hall.

The new Opposition slate has

pledged to be people-centered. They will cut the grass, clean the drains and ensure that the streets, markets, parks and cemeteries are properly maintained.

But they have also pledged to carry out those responsibilities in such a way that people see improvements in their lives throughout the city and not only in the commercial areas of the municipality which attract the most persons.

If elected to office the Opposition’s slate will build streets with proper drains to ensure that when it rains they do not become lagoons for hours and even days. Parks for city residents to relax and enjoy themselves in will be built throughout the city and not only in selected neighborhoods. Instead of spending almost $40 million for one basketball stadium at the blvd, which most Belizeans will not be able to afford due to the high entrance fee, the new PUP slate has pledged to do everything possible to upgrade basketball courts and other sporting facilities across the city. Such undertakings will provide the youths with proper recreational grounds and also provide players for large and exciting sporting events.

This new slate also plans to ensure that it gets value for money by inviting tenders for all major streetworks and other costly council projects in the municipality. They have therefore vowed to part ways with the current system in which the citizens of this city are robbed of millions of dollars in bloated contracts to politically connected persons who often don’t have the skills to execute the assign works .

Belize City has over 75,000 residents and an annual budget of over $20 million. Proper management of the municipality for the benefit of the people therefore requires honest and hardworking councilors with the necessary skills to get the job done.

The Opposition’s new slate for City Hall meets that high standard. If they are given the opportunity to serve the city in March 2018, the team is committed to working with all the people to build a better municipality throughout the entire three-year term and not only a couple months before the next municipal elections.

The Time to Save our Country is Now

The Belizean population has faced many challenges throughout the years. However, thanks to great resolve, dedication and focus no challenge has proven to be too great. Our struggles began as our young nation became independent and free in 1981. Since then, we have faced many natural disasters as well as man-made disasters. The term man-made disasters refers to the times the Belizean population decided to vote in an unfit UDP party into government. History will show that it has been the UDP that has plunged our country into financial uncertainty and crisis. It was the Esquivel led government that caused one of the darkest Christmas’ in Belizean history, retrenching hundreds of public servants.

It pains me to say that our Belizean population has grown dependent on those UDP ministers they serve.

This can be seen by the amounts of persons lined up at the Constituency offices of these corrupt ministers. After nearly 10 years and so many billions added to our debt, are we truly free and independent? As a population, are we educated, do we enjoy better healthcare? Recently with the BTL debacle caused by a stubborn and reckless Prime Minister costing the country hundreds of millions of dollars, the question of where we want to go as a nation arises? Our people have been too silent in demanding better jobs, education, health and moreover better opportunities. As a nation we have grown to be dependent and take whatever these corrupt ministers give as handouts. Our silence is music to the ears of the government we

have as they mistake silence for consent.

Moreover, our voting population has made many errors in past general elections. They chose to Imagine rather than arm our young people with free education. They believed the worthless Prime Minister who said it was impossible to provide free education. However, I would like to point out to readers that with just the money spent on the BTL acquisition, our country could have achieved free education to go hand in hand with universal health care. Therefore, readers, question your leaders on their priorities.

What do you mean to them? Their actions with BTL show that they couldn’t care less about educating the population and are more concerned with fleecing the country while they flourish. Or is it that they purposely keep our literacy rate low so on election day people jump on the handouts and sacrifice better options?

Our country is at a critical point. We are sitting on a bubble that may pop at any time. Our foreign debt continues to grow exponentially while our government fosters no real economic growth in order to repay these debts. The security of our civil servants is put at risk of retrenchment. Our dollar faces the threat of devaluation and our overall health as a nation is deteriorating. Thankfully, there is hope with the People’s United Party. The time to act and come home to the PUP is now. The time to join hands and create a working Belize is now. The PUP has demonstrated its ability to stimulate the economy, create jobs, attract foreign direct investment and as a result our country is in dire need of a responsible, able and competent government. We cannot continue playing games under a Prime Minister whose mistakes cost the country hundreds of millions of dollars and who faces no repercussions. We need a government that will bring in true democracy, true transparency and good governance for all.

As judgment day approaches let us send that first strike to the UDP next march and vote PUP down the line in all city and town boards across the country.

Where I Stand

If what Nate Berkus once said is true, “your home should tell the story of who you are,” then what does Belize say about us? Does it speak of the 43% of Belizeans living below the poverty line and the almost 60% of our high school youths not in school? Will it speak of the rampant corruption existing in almost every corner of this country and the constantly struggling citizens, businesses and economy? Will we be known as a country that tolerates the constant channeling and trafficking of drugs, weapons, and humans? Does it tell of the selling of our national passport and the continued land hustle within our Government? Will Belize be constantly reminded of the over 1,079 residents killed since 2008 and the tremendously low 5% murder conviction rate? Whether we admit it or not, these disheartening truths about Belize are a part of our story and our history. But is this the narrative we want the world to know?

Even though Belize is a lush tropical paradise with wealth untold, the negative characteristics often overshadow and degrade the individuality and attractiveness of Belize. This is because the widespread problems we continuously encounter threaten the very core of our foundation. As the words written by Samuel Alfred Haynes for our national anthem, we must “Arise! ye sons” and “Drive back the tyrants” for Belize is “Land of the Free by the Carib Sea!” which “Nature has blessed with wealth untold”.

As ambassadors of Belize we have a responsibility to stand up for

what is right because Belize has a lot to protect. Contained within our very real and not “artificial” borders are over 50% of dense untouched jungles, numerous flora and fauna and more than 900 Mayan sites. Additionally, Belize has the second largest barrier reef and the only Jaguar reserve in the world. As well, the various cultures and ethnicities present within Belize’s population of 300,000+ people ought to be preserved and protected. These are the things we must value and be able to speak of rather than the continuous corruption and crime.

The only way to transform and shift this undesirable focus is to solve and eradicate the issues that truly affect us.

Even with our differences in ethnicity, religion and political affiliation, one commonality existing between us is that every issue affecting Belize affects us all. We can no longer pretend, ignore, or distance ourselves from these issues because they continue to plague our society. While we are not all responsible for the problems affecting Belize, we are being complicit by not standing against it. As Alexander Hamilton said, “those who stand for nothing, fall for anything.” Therefore, the only way to make a change is to be the change you want to see.

We must refuse the same recycled excuses and stop accepting that these issues will forever be a part of our culture. We need solutions to the problems and for our leaders and elected officials to listen to the deafening cries of our people. We must take back the power every voter has to elect those who desire to challenge the problems and impose the appropriate solutions. Belize must be a place we all will be proud to call home; so, we mustn’t allow for its degradation because of the things we continue to ignore.

Therefore, where I stand in Belize is in front of the things that needs to be seen: the continued problems that require solutions, the places and people that need to be protected, and the fight for equality and freedom for everyone living in Belize.

MY PERSPECTIVE

CONFEDERATES IN BELIZE PART ONE A fascinating small part of Belizean history is that of the Confederates who came to Belize during and after the American Civil War in the 1860's.

Again I feature a text on an aspect of our history which Belizeans will be interested to discover, I think. There is a book called “Confederate Settlements in British Honduras.” It was written by Donald C. Simmons Jr. and published by McFarland and Company in 2001. It is well researched, boasts an extensive bibliography, and although not long, it is full of many details about the time in Belize of these Southern American Confederates who fled their homeland rather than live under the “Yankees,” who had won the Civil War and preserved the American Union. During the war and just after it ended, thousands of these Confederate sympathizers and ex-soldiers sought refuge in other countries. Some went to Mexico, Venezuela and Brazil, but Belize (then British Honduras) is where a majority of the emigrants came.

This is a brief review and commentary on Mr. Simmons' book, and in summarizing I run the risk of leaving out a great deal, but I will try to provide the main narrative and the most interesting facts from my point of view. Belize became a colony of Britain in 1862, but even before this, Simmons tells us, the potential for commercializing sugarcane production brought refugee Southerners from the United States here by 1861.

Mr. Simmons asserts that, while efforts to establish communities of Confederates in Belize was ultimately a huge failure, some of these immigrants succeeded in establishing the foundation of the sugar industry in this country.

The United States Civil War raged from 1861 until 1865, and during this time Belize became a contraband port for the supply of many goods to American Southerners, until a naval blockade halted the flow of such goods. In the last years of the conflict boatloads of refugees arrived in Belize City, especially from New Orleans, and while the actual numbers are not known, it is believed that as many as seven thousand arrived between the years 1861 and 1868. The Confederates were not interested in the “reconstruction” after the war, and they wished to preserve their way of life without Union interference. British Honduras held a great attraction for them because of its proximity and same language, but the two main obstacles to significant settlement were the lack of roads and the exorbitant cost of land.

Still, large numbers made the

five day to three week voyage, braving seasickness, yellow fever, cholera, and hurricanes, and there were many deaths at sea. One James Putnam, a prominant businessman in the colony, who was originally from New Orleans, became the main person who encouraged and facilitated the immigration process, and, in the first years, he was helped by the British Lieutenant Governor John Austin, who was very friendly towards the Confederates.

One of the most amazing aspects of the history of this era is that Governor Austin broke the British colonialist protocol of demanding US $5 per acre of land. He entered into a contractual arrangement with Putnam and his partners that in exchange for a large grant of Crown lands, Putnam would recruit Southerners to settle in the colony. Austin was willing to give away over ten per cent of our territory, from Monkey River to the western border and from Punta Icacos also west to the border with everything in between !! I believe that this move, had it been successful, could have Balkanized Belize. The so-called Icacos Grant was almost immediately rescinded by the Crown, and Austin was sacked. His successor Governor Longdon was therefore far more careful, and this made it extemely difficult for the Confederate settlers to establish large farming communities.

Interestingly too, the BH dollar at the time was equal to four English shillings, about 98 cents U.S. But American currency was very unstable then, while the BH dollar was tied to the relatively stable Pound Sterling.

Money changers sprung up in New Orleans because of the great number of persons wanting to come to British Honduras. And in Belize Town, business picked up, new commercial enterprises started, and a few new hotels opened in the Water Lane, Orange Street and Duck Lane vicinity.

However, all was not to be well for the new immigrants. Many had been advised that they should bring sufficient resources with them to last a year, due to the difficulty of looking for and acquiring land to set up their farming operations. As well, most of the immigrants did not like the British colonial way of life. And, as Mr. Simmons reports, the Confederates largely brought their racism and ideas of white racial superiority along with them. Due to this there were some ugly incidents, and the cultural clash between the Southern whites and the colonial elite became evident. I will write more about this and other intriguing facts as this review continues.

Calling Out the Ministry of Works

The Hammock (Cable) bridge at Branch Mouth went down due to flooding on the Mopan and Macal rivers three years and three months ago. I have lobbied the government in House meetings to rebuild this cable bridge which is a necessity for the residents of Branch Mouth, San Jorge and Santa Familia.

Like the cable bridge at Calla Creek which went down to floods last year, these bridges provide ease of access to residents, local visitors and tourists. At Branch Mouth it facilitates access to San Ignacio and beyond for commuters (workers) and students attending high schools, Sixth Forms and university.

After constant visits to the MoW they finally conceded that these two bridges would be built and funding obtained from the Caribbean Development Bank, CDB. The Bridges were commenced (foundations and approaches) constructed on both sides of the river. it has been some 7 months since they have been put on hold. The Minister of Works reports that they are awaiting some "links" to be imported from the USA. Other reports from the MoW say they are waiting on cables.

Heaven knows what else they are waiting on!

I contacted the Mennonite community in Spanish Lookout and found out that any links needed can be made in a 'jiffy'. I also found out that Universal Hardware imports and sells steel cables ranging from 1/4 inch up to 1 1/2 inches. My research also led me to find out that another company in Spanish Lookout imports all the 3/4 and 1 inch cables used by the Zipline industry (resorts) in Belize.

So why are we needing to wait on importation when the products are available or made readily available right next door?

Please MoW tell us the truth. The people of these villages are waiting for too long.

Dem yah UDP PEOPLE WUTLESS! This past week and a half Mayor Hilberto Campos and the now aspiring candidate for Mayor Richie Quan was in the Altamira area inspecting the area for street repairs.

Yes, the same road that has been recently resurfaced by Patt, claiming Petrocaribe investment.

The same way the towns are neglected, the villages are even worse. It has gotten to the point that even on a bike or walking it is impossible to avoid the deep potholes. And so it is for all the village roads in the Corozal North area, except of

On Saturday, November 4th, the People’s United Party launched its Belize City Council slate to contest the municipal elections scheduled for March 7th 2018.

It is an impressive, dynamic group of 11 Belizeans.

Mr. Bernard Wagner, as the Mayoral candidate, is leading this diverse skilled team. Mr. Wagner is a businessman who has a wealth of knowledge in both the professional, corporate world as well as the experience and humility in community service and development. The UWG is proud that he is being supported with three women on the slate: a youth leader, a doctoral educator and a paramedic.

The other councilor candidates possess an array of other skill sets including banking, sports development, community activism, teaching, youth leadership, entertainment promotion and other entrepreneurial and business experience. The diversity of skills and competence in this team is needed to drive the creativity and rebirth of the city to put people before party political projects that benefit a few cronies.

Bernard Wagner’s management skills and reputation for integrity, responsible decision-making and leadership is in huge demand at the commercial capital’s city hall where accountability and transparency have been seriously lacking. Millions of taxpayers’ dollars have been spent on cement streets with no drains and with streets that have shown stunning disrepair demonstrating the institutionalized levels of cronyism and corruption at city hall.

With the rains of the past months, the city has experienced flooding, as it has never done before, in areas that did not typically take on so much water.

The councilor team for Belize City proudly supports bringing back healthy initiatives for the youth population of the city including sports programs that are more than one-day political grandstanding events. These have been totally ignored for the past years of UDP administration at the city hall. The council team members are also strong advocates of working and supporting women in confronting challenges of single parenting which is a reality in the old capital, in fostering entrepreneurial opportunities, in working with businesses to stimulate employment and investment in a city that is burdened with taxes and no incentives and developing community programs throughout the city to foster a safer and better quality of life no matter the area of the city in which you reside.

It has to be noted that under the UDP administration of city hall, it is a fact that they have spent all their years focusing on developing only one side of the city and in giving out million dollar projects for streets to “friend and company.” Many of the residents and businesses on the Southside have withstood this serial neglect for too long. The PUP and its Team 11 firmly believe that your street address should not

dictate the level of attention you get from your city council.

In a shameless attempt to show the southside of Belize City that they care and in usual UDP cronyism style, the most recent blatant political act of the UDP City Council and the Barrow administration was to once again grant Imer Hernandez, the nephew of disgraced Gapi Vega, $8million for 1 mile of Faber’s Road. The stench of corruption, mismanagement and lack of genuine intent for doing good was quickly exposed so much so that PM Barrow had to quickly call a press conference where in a pathetic attempt he tried to convince the city that it is not so. But he failed. Not only is it so, but his actions only led to more revelations of the horrible road works and street works in the city where a lot of cement was poured down but as quickly as it has been poured it has also begun to break up after millions were spent. This happens when the sole interest of the UDP city council has been to give millions of dollars to friends and companies that have no experience in doing these works.

The UDP City Council will justify government’s gross expenditure on its $32 MILLION Civic Center project - a sports complex which they have admitted will not be accessed by the regular ‘normal’ Belizean for sport activities, that will cost hundreds of thousands to maintain annually, that will be used as a hurricane shelter but for executives of disaster management and not for Belizean residents. A fancy building has now been placed at a key entry point to the Southside of Belize City but it doesn’t address the poverty, the crime, the unemployment and many dilapidated and deteriorating streets in the very community in which it stands.

The Civic Center needed an overhaul but everyone know that it could have been done for far less and that the other millions could have been spent on housing, drains, garbage disposal, repairing “manholes” and drain covers which are a daily hazard for residents across the city, and many other quality of life issues.

Bernard Wagner and his team bring a fresh start in responsibly managing the monies at City Hall. They are down to earth; they are serious about doing the work of City Hall, focusing on the needs of the residents and neighborhoods of Belize and not a select few.

In developing the city, it is more than truckloads of cement. It is about working with the residents in developing a quality of life on both sides of the Belize River. It is about building opportunities for the youth population and stimulating incentives for business development and investment. It is about people first.

OPINION OUT POLLUTION

BY GARBAGE BURNING IN BENQUE VIEJO TOWN “You can fool some of the people all the time, and all the people some of the time, But you cannot fool all the people all the time” –Abraham Lincoln–

The UDP has been in power and have been administering the Benque Town Council for 17 long years and today the people in Benque are poorer than ever.

They have mismanaged millions of dollars; so today after spending our time and money, they have nothing much to show.

Our quality of life has not improved. They now say that they alone cannot sustain the programs necessary for people’s lives to be permanently uplifted. It means that they forgot their main duty: A government’s main role is to create the enabling environment to stimulate and sustain a

The economy of Belize is based on the country’s natural resources. Agriculture is the mainstay of the country’s economy.

Changes in the demands of traditional markets have also given rise to prominence of other natural resources-based dependent industries such as tourism and marine products. The country’s development is intrinsically tied to the prudent management of the environment and the country’s natural resources.

The major duties and responsibilities of Belizean municipalities are spelled out in Chapter 87 of the Town Council Act within the Belize Constitution. One of the most important duties of the Town Councils is the control, execution, and coordination of basic municipal services like: • Garbage collection; • Maintenance of roads located within its geographic area; • Land use regulation and law enforcement; • Cleaning of Public green spaces, etc.

One of the most concerning problems that Belizeans are facing now is the non-enforcement of environmental laws and regulations that combined with the lack of awareness and education, increase our vulnerability to climate change and its adverse impacts, due to the unintentionally produced Persistent Organic Pollutants, primarily dioxins and furans (highly carcinogenic), generated from uncontrolled burning of domestic garbage.

The inexistence of the waste disposal facilities in our Towns is a very critical issue. Benque Viejo Town currently has one

vibrant and growing economy.

Enough is enough! If they can't do what is required of them, then step aside. The PUP has an action plan that will put in place a Benque that works for ALL of us!
