Vega Bavs Up in Court!

Case for Defamation against Monchi Cervantes goes to Court

BELIZE CITY, Thursday, July 23rd, 2015 The defamation case brought by UDP Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources Gaspar Vega against PUP Standard Bearer for Orange Walk North Ramon “Monchie” Cervantes, Jr. went to trial before Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin this morning. But Vega, the man who doesn’t consider himself a “normal” Belizean, wasn’t exactly disproving his infamous notion, as he hemmed and hawed while on the witness stand under cross examination from the respondents’ attorneys.

Vega’s case stems from a recording of a phone conversation between Manuel Castillo, the wanted suspect in the murder case of Ramon Cervantes

said that neither was his clients’ equipment being used at the event.

Vega admitted that he couldn’t hear the broadcast clearly on Fiesta FM because the audio quality was bad. He then claimed that a “Mr. Bobadilla”, who was allegedly present at the event, spoke to him at a later date and identified the men operating the microphone and equipment at the event as employees of Fiesta FM. Courtenay interjected and told Vega that unless he can prove such allegation, he is only spewing hearsay before the Chief Justice. Courtenay then demanded to know why Vega didn’t mention such information and the name of his source of information to his lawyers, and why no corroboration existed. Vega respond-

In the recording, Castillo indicted the UDP politician in the kidnapping and murder of the well-known and much beloved former politician and businessman that occurred in June of 2014. The recording was aired on public radio at a memorial service held by the family on Wednesday, November 5th, 2014.

Vega, under stern cross-examination from attorneys Senior Counsel Eamon Courtenay (representing Fiesta FM – as subsidiary of Centaur Communications owned by brothers John and Jaime Briceño) and Senior Counsel Said Musa (representing Cervantes Jr.), was very inconsistent in his testimonies. Vega came off unsure about many things, from simple facts such as when exactly Cervantes Jr. became his political opponent to what he heard on the audio recording aired live which he insists ‘damaged’ his political reputation and caused “sleepless nights” for him and his family.

Courtenay further shredded Vega on the stand, asking the Acting Prime Minister about how he came to learn that the audio recording was being broadcast on public radio. Vega claimed that he was first notified by his driver Christopher Hendricks. He said that he tuned on LOVE FM radio and heard the broadcast, and then he switched to Fiesta FM radio when his brother, German, called him to tell him that they were also broadcasting the event live.

But Courtenay challenged the assertions, stating that Vega is wrong about his clients and that while Fiesta FM attempted to broadcast the event, they had to interrupt their broadcast early due to technical problems. Courtenay also

ed that he didn’t believe it was important enough to impart the information to his lawyers.

Courtenay further asked Vega if he has proof that Fiesta FM has possession of the recording, and after hemming and hawing, Vega said ‘no’. The only audio recording copy he has in his possession was given to him reportedly by a driver/ employee of Love FM. Of interest, Love FM who had broadcasted the event live is not a party to the trial, nor is facing any form of legal action.

Courtenay didn’t stop there. He also peered into how much of the live recording Vega had heard for himself. The UDP politician declared that he only missed “about less than half a minute” of the event, and said that when he tuned in, he heard the part of the audio in which allegations were being made against a “Minister from Orange Walk”. That was inconsistent with the facts of the day, as there was a lengthy memorial discussion

by Cervantes Jr., family and friends before the audio was aired at the memorial service. Had Vega tuned in “about less than half a minute” into the event, as he claims he did, he would not have heard the Castillo tape immediately.

When it was Senior Counsel Musa’s turn to cross-examine, Vega continued to flip flop. The UDP politician, who has admitted to recognising the voice of Manuel Castillo in the audio recording on previous occasions, was today not sure if it was the fugitive’s voice during cross-examination. He claimed that “other people say” it is Castillo. He also alleged that he has never met Castillo.

threatened. Strangely, while under oath today, Vega had a change of mind. To the same question he responded, “I don’t know yet because I have not had any elections”. Upon being reminded over and over that he had given a different reply to the media, Vega revised his response saying “I don’t think so”.

Musa then asked Vega to say what kind of character he had, to which Vega responded, “I have a credible character, everyone in Orange Walk knows me. I am a good person. I am a god-fearing person”.

Musa questioned, “Would you admit that your character has been called into question many times?” which was followed by Vega’s response, “I would want you to be more specific”.

How longer can Belize afford UDP’s top-heavy Cabinet?

22 Ministers cost Belize over $3.4 Million annually!!

Belize City, July 21, 2015 On the heels of serious warnings from foreign financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and Moody’s Investors Service about irresponsible spending by the Barrow Administration, the question must be posed: can Belize continue to afford Prime Minister Dean Barrow’s topheavy Cabinet?

Never before has Belize’s Government had so many Government Ministers as it does today. There are 22 Ministers (substantive Ministers and Ministers of State) who form part of the Executive Arm of Government, costing Belizeans approximately a whopping $1,790,800 in salaries alone.

Each substantive Minister collects $81,000 as salary annually. Barrow has awarded this title and the perks that come with it to 11 of his elected representatives and 4 special UDPs brought into the Government fold through the Senate.

Each Minister of State collects $69,000 as salary annually. Barrow has awarded this title to 7 of the most lame duck politicians in his party, as a form of reward for their political success.

Then there is the disgraced passport-hustling UDP elected representative, Elvin Penner, who is still getting paid with tax payers’ money. He collects $37,800 as salary annually.

Add those up and you get $1.79 million.

PUP to launch Power to The People Tour!!!

Belize City, July 22, 2015 PUP Leader Hon. Francis Fonseca announced at a well-attended joint National Executive/Standard Bearers meeting held at Independence Hall on Tuesday, July 21st 2015 that the Party will launch a national “Power to the People” tour in the upcoming weeks.

The tour will give the leaders of the Party an opportunity to dialogue with supporters and concerned Belizeans and address important issues affecting the country such as the Government’s weak stance in defending our territorial sovereignty and integrity against Guatemala’s aggressions, the economic failures of the Government, the Petrocaribe Loans Act and the illegal borrowing and spending that has taken place, the high level of crime and overall deterioration of citizen safety, as well as the PUP’s progressive ideas of reform and development.

The PUP “Power to the People” Bus will be strolling into villages, towns and districts with our leaders ready to talk to our people and assure them that the next PUP Government under Hon. Francis Fonseca will get Belize back on track.

Organisers of this initiative are currently finalising the logistics of the first Tour stop, and it will be announced soon.

Yet to be included are the allowances such as telephone and travel. Then there are the other perks such as Ministerial vehicles and daily fuel use. According to the Prime Minister, each Minister gets to spend about $75,000 annually on a vehicle.

Vehicle expenses for 22 ego-driven Ministers come up

to about $1.65 million. Sedi Elrington has changed two of these in one year!

Now add that too, and the total is now a shocking $3,440,800 in salaries, vehicles and perks for 22 so-far lazy and bankrupt in ideas Ministers.

Belize does not need 22 Ministers who get paid so much and deliver so little! Actually, with the lagging economy and Government’s inability to be creative and reliance on taxes from traditional sectors for revenue, Belizean cannot afford 22 Ministers.

The Prime Minister has been milking the public coffers to please his hungry political piranhas.

It is time he revisits these appointments. Merge to save costs.The Ministry of Housing, which is virtually defunct, can join another portfolio.

2015 There is no need for a Ministry of Trade, Investment, Private Sector Development and Consumer Protection which is held by the do-nothing Erwin Contreras, when the Prime Minister holds the portfolio of Economic Development. There is also no need for a Junior Minister in the Ministry of Economic Development, who only is there to duplicate the work.

The Ministers of State are a waste of time and money! There are seven of these! This is totally unnecessary, and as shown by former Minister of State Elvin Penner and Edmond Castro’s cases, can end up abusing the limited authority they are given to shaft the Belizean people. $3.4 Million dollars is a lot of money.

It could go to fund scholarships for our young students, or a health fund for poor and needy families instead of going into the pockets of a do-do bird UDP Cabinet.

SHAME ON ALL OF US

he is only 26 years and has already been through a lifetime of terrible experiences. When she was small her home was destroyed by fire, causing the family great loss and hardship.

Making it through school and adulthood she joined the Belize Coast Guard where tragedy was waiting for her. She spoke out about being sexually assaulted by male Coast Guards; it was a bold and courageous action on her part. How many women come forward in public to make complaints of rape and forever sully their name? Not surprisingly, nothing came of her complaint. She swallowed her wounded pride and remained a Coast Guard where she had graduated at the top of her class.

The worse thing that can be done to a human, whether male or female, is to be raped. It is the tearing of one’s psychology, the very psyche to remain a dignified and whole person. How she must have suffered mentally.

Earlier this year while on duty she shot a fellow Coast Guard. It is not known if he was one of her alleged tormentors. The details and motives are unknown to us. But images of a trouble young lady had emerged. Instead of providing any help our authorities charged her for attempted murder. She had to go to jail and fight to regain her freedom.

Efforts to speedily kick her out of the Coast Guard stalled and left her on interdiction and on half pay. We know of no efforts by the dozens of women groups and special envoy to see to it she had a support group and access to counselling and therapy. Ah! These women groups.

We recall the absolutely mind-boggling event a few years ago when a single mother drowned three of her children at Belizean beach. She then tried to drown herself but was prevented. The authorities, like authorities always do, charged her for murder. Which mother in their sane mind sets out to take their beloved children on a drowning expedition? This young woman reportedly was sexually molested while

in custody, got pregnant and is now in prison on a manslaughter conviction. Are the women groups there for her? In the misery of our third world prison? Is there any support? Therapy? Unlikely.

Last Saturday our Coast Guard heroine was once again in deep trouble. Living on the edge of a village in somewhat sub-standard conditions. She struggled for love and comfort with a man who turned out to be a wrong choice. A woman-beater with a drug problem. How unlucky can some women be?

A quarrel turned to a fight with the abuser taking a bamboo and in the words of an eyewitness breaking it up in the horrendous whapping he was inflicting on her while making threats.

It is reported the abuser told the young lady “I will kill your r*ss”.

She made one stabbing motion to his shoulder, and the abuser was down and out. A tragedy for both parties.

Incredibly, the authorities charged the young lady for manslaughter.

This is an outrage.

Adding salt and pepper to the wounds, she was denied bail and is now in a dark place deep inside her troubled self, inside Kolbe prison, where elementary medical attention is unavailable.

The women groups in Belize should be ashamed of themselves.

They will no doubt justify their lack of sympathy and lack of action behind the claim that the matter is in court. But that is precisely the point. Why is this matter in court?

When will women ever be free from domestic terrorists who slap, whap, beat, punch, kick, stamp, stab and kill women with such impunity? And why when such battered women are driven over the edge to where they retaliate and end up like our unfortunate Coast Guard lady; they are doubly victimized by being imprisoned.

The women of Belize should be ashamed of themselves and so should the men.

PUP’s 5 point-steps Agenda Dear Members of the People’s United Party, Our beloved Belize is heading towards extinction and our party is at a crossroads.

Our territorial integrity and sovereignty, and our Belizean identity and way of life are under attack, from both external and internal sources.

Many of our people have lost trust and confidence in our democratic institutions and now consider rhetorical any mention of change from political parties.

Nearly half of our people are living in poverty and squalor and our environment, our lifeblood, is continuously been degraded.

Our people are demanding unity, purpose and direction. It is time for a 2nd Revolution.

As members of the People’s United Party our raison d’ etre is Belize, and our motto is ‘to serve the people’.

In a meeting held Tuesday July 21st, 2015, the Party Leader, members the National Executive and Parliamentarians endorsed a 5 – Point-Steps Agenda as to the way forward for our Party.

Step 1. Leading a revolution of the future and not of the past; The past cannot be changed; Lessons have been learned as what not to do again. However the longer we remain in defense mode, the more time we allow that which has led to our losses at the polls, and which continues to fuel and fester divisiveness and selfishness in our party, the longer will our ability to calibrate the future be constrained, which only decreases our viability to return to government.

It is incumbent upon us, as our forefathers and mothers did in 1950, to set a trajectory of a clear vision of the Belize we want to see for future generations, to chart the journey to get there, and as they did, to rally the Belizean people to join us on the journey. Unity of party and country can only be achieved by having a common sense of purpose and direction.

Yes, we need to glorify and build on the achievements and successes of the peaceful constructive revolution and the lessons learned along the way, but we also need to embark on a new revolution, a change and reform revolution,

that the people of Belize are demanding, with a vision and milestones, that they can once again connect with, and believe in.

Step 2. Regaining fully the soul and spirit of our social justice philosophy and ideology; Social justice is about equality of opportunities and prosperity for all, not a few. It is about each Belizean getting a fair share of the wealth of this nation and afforded the right to unleash their full potential, regardless of the place or circumstances of their birth, political, religious or cultural affiliation and traditions.

Our party must not only speak of social justice, we must begin to earnestly champion the cause of social justice for every Belizean who has been and is being unjustly treated. We must speak on behalf of the working class in which our history is rooted, of the environment and of the voiceless and the down trodden. We must become the voice of the people in everything we do and say, even for those who are yet to appreciate and understand the dangerous course we are on.

Step 3.

Anchoring our dreams and aspirations and the survival of the nation state of Belize in principles of democratic nationalism and merge it with that of our social justice philosophy; Social justice by itself will not guarantee the survival of the nation state of Belize. People must believe that there is the application of the tenets of a democratic society, of people’s participation in decision making, of equity in representation and equal application of the rule of law, of transparency and accountability by elected leaders and fairness of the distribution of the wealth of the nation; and our people must be willing be willing to defend and protect Belize, and to declare of Belize, mi patria o muerte, my homeland or my death. This can only be achieved by if Constitution is adhered to, and our representatives lead by example, one way being to practice transparency and accountability by publishing how funds they received were expended and by educating our people to strengthen their knowledge of our Constitution and the true meaning of democracy, national pride and unity.

WOMAN IN THE HOUSE

THE EAST IS RISING On May 13th this year after the expiration of Dr. Francis Smith’s tenure as Chairperson of the Eastern Caucus of our party, I assumed the role of Chairperson. Senior Justice of the Peace and party stalwart Adrian ‘Danny’ Madrid is our Vice Chairperson, with Sharole Saldivar as Secretary and Albert Vaughan as our Treasurer.

I had originally been reluctant to take on the post of chairing the Eastern/Belize District Caucus, as I have a great deal of work on my hands in Belize Rural Central (BRC). However, after assurances of support and assistance from several key colleagues, I agreed to step forward. The Belize Rural South constituency, which includes

mainly Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker, has for practical, operating purposes remained part of the Northern Caucus, so we in the East comprise twelve divisions, the ten Belize City areas, and as well Belize Rural North and BRC. We held our meeting on Thursday of last week, and I had asked members to come prepared to discuss issues facing our constituencies and our campaign agendas. Life in politics is unforgiving and gruelling, but I have consistently found it rewarding. Almost on a daily basis I rub shoulders with and reach out to all manner of citizens, and I find myself more than ever speaking my imperfect Spanish in order to communicate effectively with

Hispanic/Spanish-speaking voters and residents.

Our meeting was sober and very useful. Discussion on the two-month period for transfer of electors from one electoral division to another formed much of our conversation. We have to be extremely vigilant at this time.

The other side are intent on winning the next general elections by hook or by crook, and I believe we will see attempts to pad the rolls by transferring persons to addresses where they do not reside.

Electoral reform will be key in the next PUP government, because of the loopholes in the current legislation. The Chief Occupant of a home is not always a truthful chief occupant, so we must find ways to vastly reduce the possibilities for fraud.

All divisions were serious and analytical in our contributions to the discussion. Training of our election workers will be vital, as Danny reminded us in his remarks, and being intimately familiar with our lists and working those street and zone lists is essential. There is simply no substitute for on-theground and one-on-one contact with voters.

As an aside, but an important aside I think, we in the PUP are not going to pay attention to the mischief of one media house in particular. As a matter of fact it is likely not mischief. It is all-out propagan-

07 7 da campaigning for the UDP that Jules Vasquez and his Channel 7 are doing. Many of their ‘political’ stories are puerile. And I bear no ill will or personal dislike towards Stephen Okeke. We have always been cordial in our contact.

But I do not know how he could possibly consider himself a political pundit. There is nothing which even remotely qualifies him to be pontificating about matters of our party. No doubt he is entitled to his opinion, but aren’t we all?? No self-appointed, so-called political commentator or anyone else for that matter will dictate to us what our priorities must be or who our officers are. We are not here to bow to Barrow’s agenda. Walk a mile in my shoes before you try to play all-knowing and “sabelo todo”.

I feel strongly that with continual, arduous, on-the-ground, inthe-homes work we can and will bring the message of the PUP to the Belizean people. We have excellent candidates, persons who are taking our politics extremely seriously, and the realization that the wrong-and-strong UDP are in no way invincible. We are looking to increase the number of seats which the Eastern Caucus of the PUP will hold in the next National Assembly from only three to at least six or more. Let us roll up our sleeves and get to the work at hand. For the PUP, the East is rising!!

The analysis that matters

As I pen this article I want to remind readers that I am no professional political analyst. I am no Okeke who has experienced great success at the polls and even greater success and fortunes from his books that we have all read. Okeke is a ferocious political bull-mastiff. I believe his books contain the recipes that have fuelled his massive political successes elections after elections.

I have never experienced such victories; therefore, Channel 7 will never engage me in any interviews of a political analytical nature.

Channel 7 will never engage me because my father does not sit on a government board and because my sister does not head a government department that has been unable to Restore Belize. They will never engage me because my pockets are too shallow to compete with the depths of Mr Pedro Caribe. I am a man of understanding.

I understand that we have a government that is not focused on governing. We have a government that does not understand that it is the government. Our government has treated National issues as a priority, as if it is waiting for someone else to address them.

It has taken the ostrich approach with its head buried deeply in the sand and other dark places.

One day the Guatemalan armed forces may cross our borders and take charge of our southern territories. One day the son of a minister could be found face down fighting for his life as many of our youth from Southside Belize City have. One day the poor will be so frustrated that an unconquerable and unforgiving rebellion will be born.

I never imagined the day would come that the United Democratic Party would become so concerned and saddened by our internal affairs in the PUP. They have gotten

It appears the PSU and Government worked in cahoots to exempt the 579 hospital employees from getting a 6% per cent raise which took effect on July 1st.

There has been no clarification by PSU President Marvin Blades.

The workers launched industrial action this week which forced Government representatives to the table, and were told that they must form their own union to proceed with negotiations.

Pablo Marin, the Minister of Health, blamed the PSU for things “going wrong from the beginning” and claimed that the Government is now trying to right that wrong. But Marin could not explain why it took industrial action by the employees for him and Government officials to meet with the hospital workers. Marin also did not say why he, as the Minister responsible for the KHMH, didn’t ensure through Cabinet that the hospital employees were covered in the salary increase.

The last time the hospital staff received a raise was in 2005, under the former PUP Government.

so concerned and sympathetic that they have not addressed the acts of aggression on our territory, the murderous streets that we the common people must walk on and the poverty we wake up to everyday. For them the only thing that matters is winning the next election.

They will buy whoever is for sale and use whoever is of use. They want to win even if we lose our country to Guatemala and our black youth to gun violence.

The PUP of 2015 must be able to stand to the Petro and to the propaganda if it is to succeed. The PUP must know that any sign of self-doubt or change in leadership will result in a guaranteed and historic bukut at the polls.

The PUP must not listen to the noise in the market but check its change. Let us not forget that in 2012 Francis Fonseca was only two seats away from being the country’s fifth prime minister after three months at the helm. Let us not forget that he has only lost one general election. Let us also not forget that he almost sent Deanie into an extended political vacation. They are afraid of Fonseca and have invested millions of dollars in a campaign to undermine his leadership and smear his image.

We in the Belize Youth Movement understand that this is chess and not checkers. We are taking notes and paying attention. We see that even the

2015 youth arm of the UDP has been completely silent on the issues affecting the jewel. Those youths have comfortably descended to the roles of flag bearers and shirt wearers within the UDP. With a vibrant, aggressive and organized youth arm the future of the People’s United Party remains bright.

The future of the entire country remains bright with the PUP. It is the next PUP government that will provide free education, repeal the gun law and say no to Guatemala. We are a party that knows how to govern and lead a country to its greatest prosperity. We will lead our people to better with Francis Fonseca even if Channel 7 summons its so-called best of political analysts to regurgitate UDP propaganda. We will lead our people to better with Francis because after almost ten years of pain and suffering better must come. Seet deh!

Belize bombs Club Deportivo Suchitepequez 4-2 San Ignacio, July 19, 2015 The Belize Jaguars bombed the visitors, Club Deportivo Suchitepequez of Guatemala, 4-2 in a practice friendly for the World Cup 2018 Russia qualifying 3rd round at the Norman Broaster Stadium on Sunday.

Belize’s most prolific international striker Deon McCaulay and Harrison Roches led the Jaguars’ offensive supported by Elroy “Bibs” Kuylen and Danny Jimenez on the wings and Denmark Casey and Andres Makin at midfield, while Dalton Eiley, Ian “Yellowman” Gaynair, Amin “Tacos” August and Khalil Velasquez took care of defense.

The Jaguars’ 1st goal came in the 18th minute, when goalie Miguel Bonilla Bran brought down a charging Harrison Roches inside “the 18”, and Suchitepequez defenders Rafael Gonzalez Ruiz and Victor Armas Lopez added insult to injury by also taking down Deon McCaulay when he went after ball near the goalpost, with Bonilla lying on the

ground. The referee ruled penalty and McCaulay’s shot went left while Bonilla dived right: 1-0.

In the 20th minute, McCaulay made it 2-0 when he darted in to connect to a pass to center from Elroy Kuylen, who had driven the ball up sideline, and beat 2 defenders to center the ball for Deon’s finish. Bonilla came off his line, but too late as his dive only allowed him to watch the ball roll into the net.

The Jaguars’ offensive strategy was working as smoothly as a Swiss watch, and Harrison “Kafu” Roches made it 3-0 in the 26th minute when he caught up to another pass to center from Kuylen. The visitors’ last defense Emerson Melgar Cabrera could not stop Roches getting off a shot, and Bonilla was beaten again, Jaguars led 3-0 up to the half.

Verdes will play the Gallos Blanco from the State of Queretaro in Mexico in a home and away series in August and another club from Panama in October each in a home and away series.

Verdes have sought to reinforce their offensive lineup by signing Belize’s most productive goleador, Deon McCaulay, but he cooled his heels on the bench the entire 1st half, while Verdes’s other strikers Marlon Molina and Alcides Thomas did their best - or worst – to get a goal for the “Green Machine”.

Perez’s shot might have gone wide of the goal but the ball deflected off a Suchitepeuez defender and into the net: 4-0 in the 60th minute.

The visitors did finally get on the scoreboard when some sloppy defending took down Christian Flores inside the 18, and Flores made Kevin Allen pay the maximum penalty: 4-1.

On Wednesday, July 15, Telemedia had secured its berth in the finals by a 7-4 win against Beacon, led by winning pitcher Kenisha Sutherland, who struck out 6 batters and walked one.

Beacon got 7 hits off Sutherland, while the Telemedia diamond made 6 errors, allowing pitcher Lanisha Jones, Mertell Bailey, Astrid Jones and Clarencia Jones to score for Beacon.

Reid Bull Is Bull!

By G. Michael Reid Whenever it seems that we are getting somewhere with this ridiculous Guatemalan claim, up jumps the devil and we find ourselves back at square one. The origin of the claim itself is quite interesting and methinks that we might be approaching this problem from the wrong angle. I do NOT believe that going to the ICJ is the solution and that in fact, poses far too great a risk. We have nothing to gain and everything to lose. For the most part, our government seems clueless as to what to do and that is made more evident every time our foreign minister opens his mouth. We have come a long way from the time when all of Belize would tremble at the mere mention of the name Guatemala and I believe that, as small as we are, we have enough stout hearted patriots to mount formidable resistance. Our biggest detriment would be our enemies within. First off, we are totally polarized and divided along a variety of lines. On the surface, we present a pretty picture of this melting pot of diverse cultures coexisting harmoniously. As was exposed by the recent incident in Santa Cruz however, there is deep seated bigotry and racism that simmers just beneath the surface, waiting to be ignited and exploited. This time it was our own Prime Minister, next time it might be external forces.

I say that we are approaching this problem from the wrong angle because there are other options available to us. Our leaders need to be bending the ear and soliciting the aid of the international commu-

nity at every opportunity. Instead of begging monies which mostly go to partisan projects and for political gain, we should be soliciting support for our sovereignty. Our Prime Minister has twice met with President Obama and instead of just seeking photo opportunities one would hope that he would have slipped in a word toward our cause. We fund embassies abroad to the tune of millions of dollars each year and we should demand more of these high paid gallivanters posing as ambassadors. At every meeting of the United Nations to which we are invited, we should be presenting proposals and seeking resolutions guaranteeing our Independence and national security.

We need diplomats who understand the essence of modern diplomacy and who can employ tactics that directly or obliquely influence support for our nation’s security. Instead, we

That is, to join our voices to an appeal being directed to Pope Francis to repeal this egregiously barbaric Papal Bull; these “doctrines of discovery” which has provided the basis for both the “law of nations” and subsequent international law that directly affects situations like ours. In Hawaii each October (when others celebrate Columbus Day), a group of ethnic Hawaiians and non-native supporters gather in

2015 in the name of this Bull, the appeal reads in part: “For these reasons, we respectfully ask you, Pope Francis, to revoke and rescind the Inter Caetera of 1493, which vested moral and spiritual authority in the colonial envoys and captains to brutally and violently conquer Native lands. The only method by which to reconcile these soul wrenching crimes and to affirm that the indigenous peoples, the poorest of the poor, are human beings is to officially revoke this doctrine”.

Pope Francis has been referred to as the “rock star” of the Catholic Church with a “no frills” attitude and a “common touch and accessibility that is proving the greatest inspiration.” Many believe that if ever a Pope would have the courage and conviction to set this record straight it would be this one. Francis is considered “a progressive papal reformer, with a less-doctrinal tone of papacy”. He is credited with having a big hand in the restoring of full diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Cuba and seems unafraid of controversy.

He has tackled a number of topics hitherto considered taboo. On July 9th of this year, the Associated Press reported that while visiting La Paz, Bolivia, “Pope Francis apologized… for the sins, offenses and crimes committed by the Catholic Church against indigenous peoples during the colonial-era conquest of the Americas”. Author Steven Newcomb believes that in giving “his statement of papal contrition in La Paz, Pope Francis has taken an important first step toward revoking the papal bulls of empire and domination”. Let us step outside this box of traditional thinking and employ new strategy to this game. The rescinding of the Bull would solve not only our problem but many other existing problems of the world. In this day of enlightened thinking, it is past time for this to happen.

To understand the direction in which I am going, we must delve to the very root of this unfounded Guatemalan claim. I’m talking before 1940 when Guatemala declared the 1859 treaty void. Before 1859 even, when Guatemala agreed to our sovereignty in exchange for some “economic assistance provisions” found in Clause VII of said 1859 Treaty. I believe that we need to go way back to May 4th of 1493 when then Pope Alexander VI issued his Inter Caetera to Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain.

This ridiculous and presumptuous “Papal Bull” is the root cause of not only our problem but the problems of just about every so-called “new world” nation and all indigenous peoples everywhere. It is the root cause of Guyana’s problems with Venezuela, Nicaragua’s disputes both Honduras and Costa Rica and our own problems with Guatemala.

Inter Caetera which was issued following the voyage of Christopher Columbus to the island he called Hispaniola, officially established Christian dominion over the entire so-called New World. It called for the subjugation of the native inhabitants and their territories, and divid-

Belize City, July 22, 2015 It’s been a struggle for Jovita Tillett, a mother of four from Guinea Grass Village in the Orange Walk District. For the past seven years, she has had to fight to keep her youngest child alive against many odds.

7 year old Zider Alexander Tillett was born a normal child. But at age 3, he was diagnosed with multiple tumours over his body. He received treatment at the Northern Regional Hospital and was prescribed antibiotics, but the medication triggered other health problems. Zider was around the dinner table one day, when he suddenly panicked and cried out that he couldn’t find his plate, shared his mother. He had gone totally blind mysteriously.

As a matter of urgency, it must be reconfigured and re-structured for sustained inclusiveness, outreach and grass roots empowerment and mobilization so the Belizean people, especially our members, are cognizant of our Constitution and what distinguishes us from other political parties, and what we stand for, so that we can bring forth and sustain the promise of the 2nd revolution, and ensure ultimately, the party holds itself accountable to its philosophy, principles and ideals when it is the government. Our party must be transformed to a progressive, modern and forward thinking one engaged in critical political strategic thinking, analysis and action at all levels of the party.

Step 5. Finding a Role for everyone; No party can survive without regeneration. Neither can a party move forward without the marrying of maturity and experience with the zealousness, energy and novelty of the young for continuity. There must be role for everyone within the new order of change and reform. This may require assigning new and different roles other than that which members have become accustomed to. Some people may be required to step back or step aside, while others step up, for it is not about self, rather, it is about the survival of both Belize and the People’s United Party.

It wasn’t until March 19th of this year that Zider was able to undergo a much needed surgery for one of his eyes. An expat living in Corozal Town committed to assisting Tillett. The Good Samaritan sponsored the $2,000 surgery for Zider’s right eye, which successfully removed an overgrown cataract. His left eye is in a much worst condition, however, and the doctor advised that she must seek treatment outside of Belize.

Tillett says that she has been trying to raise enough money to take her son to

Guatemala where specialised treatment for his condition is available. She explained that the medical condition has been tormenting her son. He suffers constantly from vomiting, upset stomach, high fever, pain by his ear and skin rashes.

The medical problems have also stunted his growth and physical development, and at 7 years old, he is barely the height and weight of a 3 year old child.

Tillett told the BELIZE TIMES that she has been seeking help for several years.

She even spoke personally to the Prime Minister’s wife,

Kim Simpliss-Barrow, who is the Government’s Special Envoy for Women and Children, but the response was not favourable. Tillett recalled that Mrs. Barrow replied that she was also seeking the same thing: finances.

23 Vega Bavs Up in Court!

Vega was on the witness stand for almost 50 minutes.

The only other witness called to the stand by Vega’s attorney, Senior Counsel Rodwell Williams, was one Josue Castillo, one of Vega’s campaigners, who turned out being of limited help to his political boss’ case. Castillo admitted in open court that he only heard “5 minutes” of the broadcast, and that it has not changed his view of the UDP politician because “I don’t see him as a bad man”.

Prior to the cross-examinations, Courtenay and Musa strenuously objected to the introduction of a transcribed version of the audio recording, which was originally in Spanish, as evidence in Court. Courtenay challenged its inclusion since it was not filed along with the other witness statements by the March 27th 2015 deadline given by the Chief Justice.

The claimants had attempted to enter the document on June 25th 2015, which was almost three months past the deadline.

Courtenay was relentless in his objections, saying that the claimant’s notice was out of time and that tendering the document is tendering hearsay. In any event, Gaspar Vega could not properly identify the “female” who had transcribed the audio recording.

The case was adjourned to Friday, July 24th, 2015 at 10:00am, at which time the transcriber of the tape and another witness, who only speaks Spanish and will need an interpreter, will be called in. The Chief Justice will also rule if the transcription will be accepted as a valid document in the case. The BELIZE TIMES will keep following this case.
