Most Belizeans would be excused for wanting to be ‘like Mike,’ and we don’t mean Michael Jordan. After all, that UDP insider, brother to a Minister, unabashed crony and Barrow buddy has landed himself a cushy, lucrative posting at Beltraide on the heels of a bigtime, lucrative posting as CEO of the Ministry of Tourism. Most Belizeans could also be forgiven for remembering a very old but very popular commercial which went something like this – ‘Let’s get Mikey…he’ll eat anything.’

Indeed, from events of late it appears that Mike Singh has been placed in a position where he can gorge at will from choice slices of the public pie. And gorge he has.

Just recently, Mike Singh’s name emerged from the south of Documents were brought to light Belize in a distinctly shady light. which proved that Singh benefitted

financially from the sale of land to Royal Caribbean which was to

have been used for a cruise tourism facility. Wearing the cap of CEO in the Ministry of Tourism, Singh was in a position to carry out negotiations with Royal Caribbean.

And wearing his cap as businessman and land speculator, he created a financial windfall for himself.

The only holdup to the cruise tourism deal came when residents of Placencia protested en masse, but by that time Singh was already laughing all the way to the bank.

Now revelations have emerged from the recent tender operator fiasco and again Singh’s name has been called. As CEO in the Ministry of Tourism, he was in a position to hold meetings and carry out negotiations with cruise tourism operators and it is believed that there is no way he could not have (Continued on pg. 3)

Fractures & Fissures

In his last tour of the media circuit, the prime minister appeared fatigued and unwell. He was as suave, poised, rehearsed, sneaky, sly and slippery as ever, but he looked very tired. While it is accepted that ‘uneasy lies the head that wears the crown,’ the current leader of the nation has been beset by no end of crises small and large, internal and national. Within the short space of three years the pomp and power of widespread acclamation has been replaced by a distinctly sour taste and it shows.

When the prime minister issued his New Year ’s address which contained no end of glorious promises, he was mocked for trotting out the ‘same old’ in yet another fantastically written piece. When in that same address Dean Oliver Barrow spoke of wonderful times in the jewel in the year past and much more to come, he was openly ridiculed for his disingenuousness and studied neglect of reality in what used to be a jewel. It has been that type of year for the prime minister – a year during which he has been forced to call on every iota of tradecraft to maintain his composure on the national scene, but no makeup can hide the cracks in the façade of his leadership.

Within the UDP, the fractures and fissures continue to multiply as that party embarks on its standard-bearer convention cycle and the process has gotten really ugly really quickly. The party has come under attack from participants in the process who feel that they have been victimized, abused and manipulated by their very own. With just three conventions done, the dirty linen which has been aired has been startling and immensely damaging to the United Democratic Party. No wonder the leader ’s jowls were trembling during his last media appearance.

At the first convention held in Caribbean Shores, the challenger barraged incumbent Carlos Perdomo with allegations of corruption, mismanagement and incompetence. Perdomo managed to hold on only through a massive infusion of money and political clout thrown his way by wealthy family members and colleagues. But the damage was done and the Party paid a hefty price for the victory.

In Orange Walk East the run-up to convention day was even better funded, more expansive and extravagant and much nastier, with allegations thrown back and forth. In the end the horse backed by UDP Deputy Leader Gaspar Vega pulled off a victory, but again with massive damage to the Party.

Both the defeated incumbent and another challenger were vocal with their accusations, accusing the winner of buying votes and tampering with the voter lists. Video footage on the news supported the claim of the winner buying votes and the fallout was tremendous. The convention was hailed as a victory for big money and the UDP was accused by their own of working against the poor people of Belize.

In the third convention held just this past weekend, a furor of allegations has been voiced against the victorious incumbent by one defeated challenger. One prominent UDP insider in the challenger ’s camp has stated openly on the news that the winner, Corozal Bay Area Representative and UDP Minister Pablo Marin, made improper use of the Elections & Boundaries Department to register voters illegally. It is a very serious allegation and it has cost the UDP dearly, within its own ranks.

Added to all that is a growing rift between UDP Chairman Patrick Faber and UDP Deputy Leader Gaspar Vega brought into stark focus during the convention in Orange Walk East. As if the prime minister does not have enough on his plate, the Chairman threatened to resign if the Deputy Leader was not put in check and the Deputy Leader was heard to refer to Faber as an ‘insolent pup.’ While the prime minister scurried to provide some measure of damage control, the rift under the band-aid fix is festering and will further damage an ailing party.

But no matter how uneasy his head lies under the weight of his crown, Mr. Barrow made his bed and now he must lie in it and suffer the fleas. Surrounded by a clueless bunch of ruffians, incompetents, crooks and hustlers as he is, things will not get better in the days ahead for the prime minister. Things will get distinctly worse. The United Democratic Party is falling to pieces all around the prime minister and there is absolutely nothing he can do about it. It can’t come too soon for the people of Belize who have struggled and suffered under this administration.

PUP Chairman responds to Colin BH Dear Editor, In Tuesday’s edition of the Amandala Colin bH wrote very disrespectfully of the members of the PUP’s Order of Distinguished Service and of the Father of the Nation.

For the family of Mr. Charlie Hyde, an honourable man, who has always promoted the virtue of respecting your elders, I find it disappointing and in poor taste that such an insult to all senior citizens is printed. Usually I would glance over Colin’s column and ignore, realizing that it is his pitiful attempt at humour. However, as Chairman of the Party I cannot let the latest slander go without a response.

For the record, Colin Hyde is not a member of the People’s United Party. He does not and has never been a part of the National Executive of the Party or served in any capacity in the management of the PUP. He writes from a position of ignorance, which is often reflected in his error-ridden pieces. His is a tabloid column and should be treated as such.

As to the ODS, it is a vibrant and active arm of the PUP. Mr. Belizario Carballo is the Chairman, and other d i s t i n g u i s h e d c i t i z e n s , s u c h a s S a m Wa i g h t , E l o i s a Trujeque, Tony Soberanis, Sandra Wragg, Cassian Nunez, Ienna ‘Ms. Birdie’ Sealy, and Pedro ‘Ducho’ Thomas, among others, all serve as members. Mr. Hyde owes an apology to all these individuals. They have been and continue to be good servants of Belize and deserve our gratitude, not one mediocre writer ’s derision.

Finally, even though the Rt. Hon. George Price retired from public life years ago Colin bH can’t seem to get over the fact that while Mr. Price worked to build a better Belize, the most he could do was to write about it. I can tell you that as Mr. Price approaches his 92nd birthday, he possesses today more intellectual capacity, compassion and clarity of thought than Colin bH will ever achieve.

children from the same school she attended in Ladyville are giving very different accounts. Described as a smart girl, Janessa Jones captured first place in the last Festival of Arts and in her schoolwork. Her 26 standard five classmates were noticeably thrown by the news that she

had been murdered and her best friend, Esmeralda, tried to focus on her schoolwork as she kept glancing over to the chair where her lost friend sat. She last saw Janessa on Monday evening when classes were dismissed.

Police had initially questioned the little girl's mother and stepfather, but have made no strides in establishing neither a motive or a killer.

It was really a head to head between Faber and Vega, round one. Faber did not fare well in that battle and the little dude took it personally to the extent of flirting with resignation after he took that fum-fum.

Round two was Sunday. Faber backed the challenger Campos while Vega commanded that even Barrow support Pablo. It is hard to understand why Barrow would publicly support the biggest UDP dunce. We are always surprised when he chews gum and stands at the same time.

But seriously, no one would disagree that Pablo has been the worst UDP Minister. Under him

we have had another Commission of Inquiry, with KHMH. We have been plagued by a preventable D e n g u e o u t b r e a k . We h a d t o stomach a public war between Doctors and the UDP Government.

We saw the death of poor people’s National Health Insurance. We have buried scandalous infant deaths at the public hospitals in our memories.

Ye t Ve g a s p o n s o r e d a n d acted like Pablo was the best thing since the National anthem.

In fact reports reaching Belize Times is that $500,000 was withdrawn by someone from a certain account, shortly before the convention. It was so much they could not even get change to break it up into smaller bills than $100. Why again you ask.

It is all about party leadership,

Round four will be in Corozal S outh Eas t, w h er e G ap i is no t taking any chances. He is going family with Raul Rosado against P atr ick ’s S er v an d o S a mo s . We bet on Rosado, which will give Gapi a full monopoly of the N o r t h e r n C a u c u s o f t h e U D P. Patrick would be better advised to go south.

But of course all this is a u s e l e s s e x e r c i s e o f t h e U D P, since Belizeans will send them all packing when general elections are called. Vega claims that he is looking beyond 2013 and has the money and the clout to bide his time. After this dismal performance of the UDP, we’d advise him to save his money for his next career move. The day of reckoning is fast approaching.

RUN WITH SOLE

A Real Responsibility to our People…

In this day and age, the use of the social media as a means of communications has become a force with which ever politician must reckon. For those of us who want to reach voters, and in particular young voters, one of the most effective ways is by using tools like Facebook, twitter and the like.

Some time ago I established a Facebook page which continues to grow.

Many of my Facebook friends are young Belizeans or people who are interested in Belizean issues. On a daily basis, people post their opinions on issues that are of importance to all of us as a people and a nation.

Of course not everyone who signed up on my Facebook page is a party supporter or even a supporter of John Briceño, but each and every one of the thousands of friends on my page care deeply about Belize and about the future of our country.

On a daily basis, they express concern about the future of our beloved Belize. They post comments that call on all of us in roles of leadership to work harder at restoring confidence in the Belizean economy. They are crying out for some real action to be taken to reverse the ever growing crime situation gripping the nation. Some of them talk about the fact that our youth seem to have no outlet for their energies and they lack that optimism which should be seen on the faces of the youth. Ravaged and made desperate by poverty, many of our youth are angry at opportunities denied.

While there can be as many opinions as there are posts listed on my Facebook page, one thing remains constant - people believe that there is a better way and that with every passing day we are wasting time in correcting what is wrong with our nation.

It is not difficult to understand why so much of what is posted on my Facebook page expresses dissatisfaction with the state of affairs in Belize and with our leaders. After all, so much was promised and so little is being delivered by this current administration. They promised to bring down the cost of living “NO MATTER WHAT!” yet today the cost of living continues to skyrocket. They promised to make the cost of fuel at the pumps cheaper; today fuel is well above $10 per gallon. They said they would create jobs 5,000 new ones to be specific and today unemployment has gone from 8% to 14% in two short years. Nothing seems to be working right and day by day more and more Belizeans are falling through the cracks into poverty.

Our once peaceful existence has been shattered by a rash of crime and violent behaviour never before seen in Belize. Last year a record 132 murders were committed in Belize and 13 days into the New Year there have been three murders, one of the victims an innocent 12 year old girl.

No wonder there is so much mistrust and cynicism and loss of confidence in the political process and in political leadership. It used to be that politicians worked hard to deliver on their promises and felt an obligation to be accountable to the people. Yet in today’s world, when everything is real time and it is so easy to check the facts, so many of our ministers talk and make promises they either cannot deliver on or refuse to do so.

One of my young facebook friends wrote: “Johnny in all fairness...... just know that I have great respect for politicians in general.......it’s just dat sometimes there are greater issues and I get mad when I hear politicians straying away from the real reason we should be talking. I know it is not easy to be a leader.........but I just hope that u can reflect on what is really happening and seeing the Belizean people suffering more than 10 years now this country has been going more and more down the drain and there is statistical data to show that too...not just speaking......I speak with facts...and u know the truth as well...............don't feel victimized by our words ...I am neutral in both party so don't feel that I belong to a specific party but for the meanwhile try to help me in my passion to revive and better off my country Belize.....I am dead serious and want the best for my country! Thanks!!!”

When we offer ourselves as leaders we have a responsibility to the people we serve; we are judged not only by what we say, but also by our actions and how they affect our country. All of us are held to account for the promises we make. We owe it to our people to do our part for Belize and for Belizeans.

“Run with Sole” is a Miami based group with Belizean ties already causing a stir in Belize. Belize representative for “Run with Sole” Mrs. Jamie Usher teamed up with her husband Henry Usher in the Fort George Division to give a small donation of running shoes to young runners.

Joshua Gillett was among the recipients and Mrs. Usher is very excited to have more kids running in Belize.

“Running is a fairly inexpensive, highly athletic sport, and we need to find sports that will engage young people in healthy, fulfilling activities. Run with Sole is prepared to make a positive contribution to the lives of young people.”

“Run with Sole” will be making a much larger donation early in 2011 that will be spread out all over Belize City and soon after among the entire nation of Belize.

UDP Politics as usual NO Clue…

In terms of this crime thing, can we realistically expect 2011 to be any different from 2010?

Can we expect a decrease in murders, in home invasions, in assaults, in robberies and shootings and thefts?

The government has offered nothing different from 2010 – no new initiatives, no new agenda, no new plans, no bold, visionary ideas. There is nothing new coming out of the Ministry of Police, nothing new coming out of the Police Department. Operating Restore Belize is still putt-putting merrily along on the wings of a song.

Poverty is increasing apace, as is unemployment. Frustration and desperation are heading on up. There have been no social programs offered and no move to address the school dropout rate. There is still no state of the art forensic/DNA lab which Mr. Barrow promised something like three years ago. He continues to promise the lab periodically but still nothing. That’s all we’ve gotten from this government – NOTHING. The Minister of Police did his media thing the other day but while he may be cute (or not) we were given NOTHING concrete, nothing to base our hopes for better on. So far 2011 isn’t looking all that great…

Truly Disgraceful!

The results of the latest Police promotion exams are bad, dismal, awful… disgraceful! If the public had needed any other reason to lose confidence in their police department this is it. Of the 479 police officers who sat the exam only 39 passed.

Amazing! This is way past cause for concern. There is something seriously wrong in the ranks of our men and women in uniform. During an interview Minister of Police Doug Singh put on his sad face, but didn’t say anything about putting anything in place to correct the matter. He talked about looking at the results and ‘crunching the numbers.’ People don’t want to hear about crunching any numbers. We need an immediate investigation into and enhancement of the recruiting process. We need to immediately examine the syllabus at the Police Training School to ensure that our young recruits are being taught properly. We need to do something, anything concrete…! How can we expect to address the crime problem when our police officers are inadequately trained? How can we expect to put criminals behind bars if our officers are not up to the task? Instead of Doug Singh pushing for a gym, he needs to get real and start dealing with the critical issues affecting the police department.

Everywhere is war…

This UDP is unraveling at the seams and breaking up like the proverbial dolly-house. There have been three conventions so far – in Caribbean Shores, in Orange Walk East and in Corozal Bay just this past weekend. What they have done is reveal serious fractures within the Party and have aired tons of dirty linen.

In all three areas there have been very credible accusations of corruption, voter fraud, voter list tampering, the buying of votes and serious mismanagement by the incumbents. In all three areas the run-up to convention day has been contentious, overtly hostile, nasty and volatile. In all three areas the UDP has been clearly split along the lines of big money and big power. In fact, at

the second convention in OW East things got so bad that UDP Chairman Patrick Faber and Deputy Leader Gapi Vega got into a shouting match which led to the Chairman threatening to resign. Dean Oliver Barrow is looking very old lately when he makes media opportunities. He is looking very tired and stressed. His party is breaking up all around him and there is absolutely nothing he can do about it.

Ask Mike…

In response to a question about Mike Singh’s involvement in this whole cruise tourism thing, Dean Oliver told the media that they would have to ask him. Hmmm! Why does the prime minister continue to provide cover for Mr. Singh?

There needs to be an immediate investigation into the whole Singh thing. Just the other day his name surfaced in the proposal for a cruise tourism facility in Placencia when it was revealed that he had benefitted financially from the sale of the land for the facility and the prime minister had nothing to say.

Now Singh’s name has surfaced again after revelations that his company was responsible for bringing two new catamarans into the country to take advantage of the alleged new requirements of the cruise ship companies. It’s a sweet deal – as CEO in the Ministry of Tourism Singh could be in on the negotiating aspect of the deal with the cruise company representatives. And now since he has moved on to head Beltraide, he is in the position to provide lucrative financial incentives from that side. The prime minister needs to do much, much more than just shrug off the hard questions. Mr. Singh has been allowed to get away with way too much and now needs to be taken to task.

Providing an example…

The murder of a 12 year old student from Ladyville has gone a long way to reiterating for many of us how bad things have gotten in our society. Many of our very young children have become victims of twisted individuals who prey on them and then leave their bodies discarded like garbage.

So very many of our youths have turned to lives of depravity because they feel they have no other options. Many of our youths have turned into killers who would empty a gun into another ’s head without the slightest hesitation. Now more than ever we need to provide good examples for our young people. Now more than ever we need to provide them with the values which will make them constructive contributors in our communities. But instead of providing our youths with that example, our prime minister for his own reasons has placed his son Shyne on a pedestal and has told the children of our nation that they must look to him as a role model. Mr. Barrow is not serious about righting the wrongs in our society. He lacks the political will to repair the tears in our social fabric.

The Flip Flopping Wrecking Crew

During last week’s LOVE FM’s Morning Show, PM Dean Barrow boldly stated that what Channel 5 aired regarding the warning that small tender operators cruise ships are being marginalized in favor of larger players was untrue and blown out of proportion. But then he went on to say that larger ships are the way of the future and part and parcel of progress.

And the following day, this same PM Barrow was on a flight to Miami with his UDP appointed leaders (Manuel Heredia –Minister of Tourism, Seleni Matus – Director of Tourism and Lindsay Garbutt- CEO in the Ministry of Tourism) to meet with the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) and Carnival Cruise lines in particular to see if they could hold off their implementation of the new policy for bigger tender ships. If it isn’t such a big deal…then why the rush with an entourage for the meeting?

It is not the first time Barrow has flip-flopped on many issues since taking office - remember the commitment to the price of fuel being kept at $7; his commitment to a DNA forensic lab; the commitment to a world class basketball court, and the list of flip-flops goes on.

But in his usual way of projecting himself as Belize’s superhero that rescues Belize from some bad thing or the other, PM Barrow said on his way to that meeting in Florida that we cannot have our small operators pushed to the side like this and without any prior notice. Words were coming out of the PM’s mouth but they meant nothing!

This was just another indication of his flip flopping manners.

And in his MO of distracting the public, he says he understands that Carnival’s main tender operator knew of the impending changes and so if anything they are the ones to blame.

Really, the PM expects the country to believe that a local company that has the contract to ferry passengers is the company to blame for Carnival’s move to larger tenders. And that they were supposed to inform the nation of this new policy the same day that they and the nation got the news. Now really, we Belizeans are not that dumb, Mr. Prime Minister.

The PM in his interviews with the media failed to inform the public that the BTB under the leadership of his appointed friend Seleni Matus had an entire section of its much flaunted action plan (developed by a host of foreign consultants who are friends of Ms. Matus) dedicated to cruise planning and destination management since they have so much experience in it. So if anyone is to blame for not informing one has to look at the BTB as well. They issue all licenses for cruise operations but more importantly, since being appointed in April 2010 and physically taking office in summer 2010, Ms. Matus’s efforts and priorities appear to be only cruise tourism and she has been in constant contact with the FCCA. Her time in office at BTB began with cruise tourism, ensuring BTB lobbies to host the 2011 FCCA Platinum cruise conference in Belize by being at several FCCA meetings and which it will be hosting later on in the year. The year 2010 ended with the fiasco of BTB and the Ministry pushing cruise consultations in the south in order to justify a proposed cruise facility in Placencia which by now the country knows Placencia has categorically rejected, changed the

wording in the BTB official action plan to downplay its role in getting the “Placencia citizenry ready for cruise destination management”, embroiled with local guides and operators outside the cruise village in the height of the cruise season. Now she has started 2011 with her first meeting in Miami with FCCA on this tender matter.

Does the PM and his trio of UDP cronies expect Belizeans to believe that this came as a complete surprise

to them knowing how much this government, the BTB and the ministry has been involved with cruise tourism and the FCCA over the past year and talking about better standards and improved quality of operations in the cruise sector. To launch the tourism high season, they even had a cruise tourism rally at Old Belize.

With all this noise , effort and energy given to the cruise sector, who exactly is looking out for the

really more sustainable overnight sector which is the future of Belize’s long term growth in tourism? With this team, it is all about bowing to the cruise lines and dealing with one cruise issue after the next. Or as Krem Radio Talk Show host put it this week, all they were able to do is to rush off to meetings in Miami only to come back with “time”. The cruise lines will give Belizean small operators time (up until October 2011) to get larger tender boats.

So who exactly is looking after the more sustainable, long term future of overnight tourism in Belize if all the energies and monies in flights, meetings, and negotiations over the past year have been about cruise issues? With a Prime Minister who has publicly stated that he is all for oil drilling in protected areas (some of which do form many of the overnight tourism attractions), we are certain Belize can expect many more flip flops.

Murder #1 in week 2 of 2011

The first murder of the new year was not long in coming, and happened at around 6:20 on Sunday evening on Baghdad Street, just a stone's throw away from Cemetery Road, which is one of the old capital's busiest arteries and just a few minutes drive from the centre of town.

The victim, Michael Malic, 20, was shot multiple times at close range by two persons who got out of a black SUV and emptied their weapons on him as he stood at the window of a small grocery shop waiting to purchase a cigarette. He

had left home only minutes before saying he was going to visit a friend.

His killing took place just a minute's walk from his house on Taylor's Alley.

The Police Department's Press Officer, Sergeant Fitzroy Yearwood, said that while they are yet to determine a motive for the nation's first homicide in 2011, Malic had friends in rival gangs and the Department was looking closely at this angle. Police exams prove officers The more things change...the need more training more they stay the same

The Ministry of Police always gloats when the Police Department takes on new recruits for enrolment.

Fancy passing out ceremonies are always held with elaborate speeches and grandiose kudos dished out in abundance.

When the exercise is complete, one would think that Belize's cops are the finest trained officers in the region. Well, quite to the contrary, information leaked to the media last Friday revealed that not only is that not true, but that Belize's Police Officers fall so short in proper training that the majority of them cannot even pass the Department's routine promotional exams. In other words, generally speaking, an officer has a time of his (or her) life successfully advancing to a higher rank.

The two-part exam was sat on November 27, 2010, and 479 policemen and women, ranging in ranks from Constable to Sergeant from all over Belize underwent the challenge to try to advance to the next level. The results, however, left more feelings of disappointment than accomplishment because the percentage of those who did earn it was so small that it only adds to the embarrassment with which the Department seems to be perpetually bedevilled.

Here are the results: 39 persons, or around 12 % of those who sat, passed with a grade of 60 and above.

But even more dismal to that reality is that the officers with the higher ranks were the ones whose performance was the poorest. Only six sergeants of 77 who sat the exam passed; while four of 109 corporals were successful, and 29 of 293 constables made it. The

prospects get even gloomier if that were not dismal enough. Those who wish to advance still have to undergo other procedures in order to attain that promotion.

The Minister of Police, Doug Singh, seems to be just as lost about the results. When interviewed this week by another media house he says that the officers must pass the two parts of the test - both the objective and the subjective components, in order to attain a pass. He added that the results are now being reviewed to determine whether there was a general area of weakness among the officers. And while the last set who sat the exam did poorly overall, Singh has no immediate solution on how to fix the problem. As for the officers who failed, well they will just have to wait for the next round of exams again, and that does not seem to be anywhere in sight.

Over the weekend the UDP held another if its conventions to elect a standard bearer for the 2013 General Elections. This time it was in Corozal Bay and there were three horses in the race: incumbent Pablo Marin, Corozal Mayor Hilberto Campos, and contractor Kenard Smart. While the event went through without incident, by the time it was over the results proved that Marin had more than doubled Campos at the polls and Smart trailed way behind. Of the 2702 votes cast, 1663 were for Marin, 742 for Campos and 297 for Smart.

One very important observation is that while everyone, including the government, is crying "hard times" the UDP was not sparing in their support of the incumbent, Marin. Campos claimed that for a week at least five ministers took up residency in Corozal to support his opponent. This was unprecedented, claimed Campos that ministers of government would relocate to a particular location away from their official seat in Belmopan, to give time and money to a campaign for a fellow colleague. The whole show also bothered Campos, who said the spending on elaborate banners, t-shirts and mobilisation for Marin was extravagant.

The only minister who did not support Marin and was in Campos' corner was Tourism Minister, Manuel Heredia, who said he did so on the basis of principle because Campos was a humble man like himself. He

also thought Campos would make a much better Area Representative than Marin. Belize City Mayor Zenaida Moya Flowers also campaigned for Campos, though her own political future with the UDP remains iffy. For her it was more of a "mayors' loyalty" than principle.

But the story does not end there.

In fact, the Campos camp is crying foul because they allege that the Marin camp was using their power to manipulate the registering and voting process. They, specifically Campos' campaign manager Free Zone Chief David Akierman, claimed that up until 7:30 last Friday night, he "personally went to the electoral registration office and people were being registered at 7:30 in the night."

Said Akierman: "We had to get Mr. Zuniga, the Deputy Chief Electoral Officer to intervene and we have the photographs of some Lebanese nationals that were in there...we have reliable sources that they had faxed in lists."

The allegation is now under investigation by the Elections and Boundaries Commission, but it is one that Marin has denied. He even claimed that 50 of his supporters were rejected. He claimed that Campos and Smart worked against him when they realised that they did not stand a chance. It will be interesting to see what the Elections and Boundaries Commission/Department's findings will be.

Dangriga contractors say GOB's SIF boxing them out of business

A group of about 100 men, mostly from Dangriga and neighbouring communities, are up in arms and utterly upset at the way they feel they have been boxed out of making a living. They feel that the majority of construction contracts in their municipality which are being given out by the Government's Social Investment Fund are dished out to a choice few, most of whom don't have any connection to the area.

On Tuesday a small group of less than ten of those contractors peacefully picketed the Gulisi Monument a mile out of the town to record their displeasure that SIF had granted the latest contract, to construct the Gulisi Primary School, to a man from outside the community.

That man is Kenard Smart, the UDP's third candidate in the Corozal Bay's Convention on Sunday to challenge Area Representative and Minister of Health Pablo Marin.

A small group of contractors from Dangriga and its environs held a brief protest in front of the Gulisi Monument because they felt that they were being denied every chance

by SIF to any of its projects in the town. The men claim that none of them has ever received a contract from the organization for any of the community projects. While that may be true, it is, according to SIF's Public Relations Officer, Mike Hernandez,

because none of the men has ever met the criteria to win any of their contracts. Hernandez told the media this week that SIF, like any other institution, has principles which it must abide by in awarding contracts.

Those principles are set out by the financial institutions that provide the monies for the projects, such as the Inter- American Development Bank, the Caribbean Development Bank and the European Union. He continued that SIF must keep within a certain budget, while at the same time keep the high standards to which it is held. In fact, Hernandez said that the reason why none of the men nor the

group they represent got the contract was twofold: their submission was over the budget SIF had, and, their submission was also incomplete. He

added that there are contractors from the District that have won contracts for previous projects.

The contractors feel, however, that if they were given a chance to negotiate with SIF for the project, then everyone would have been pleased. Now they will have to seek employment with Smart, who has already said that he has subcontracted the project to a friend from Dangriga, who will then hire workmen as the need arises.

At the end of the day, there are a hundred men and their families from Dangriga and neighbouring communities who feel aggrieved by this latest contract disbursement.

They also feel that their future is uncertain in their field of work if SIF is going to give out contracts only after reviewing submissions and without giving priority to those who are from the community.

Raymond "Killa" Gentle

In his day, Raymond "Killa" Gentle, 35, had some brushes with the law, having been charged for attempted murder at the age of 24 and then a year later in 2000, released from prison after the case fell through. Since then, Killa has been on a road to reform, and opened a small grocery shop at his Kraal Road property and then became involved in football, particularly for youths from the same area. More recently, he was working as one of the building contractors for the Southside Poverty Alleviation Project under Minister of Works Anthony "Boots" Martinez.

But even changing his life was not enough to spare it because even though he was at his worksite, someone who Police believe had an "old beef" with Gentle murdered him. The incident happened at around 5:45 this past Wednesday evening not far from his shop, at the corner of Baracat Street and Kraal Road where Gentle stood working on an unfinished house. The lone gunman ambushed Gentle and unleashed a hail of bullets, seven to be precise, at close range.

Gentle was pronounced dead on arrival at the KHMH Emergency Room. Police have not detained anyone for the killing.

Just over two years ago, in the midst of an era where Belize City seemed to transition overnight from gunfire to grenade blasts, Gentle, who underground

reports say led the Kraal Road gang, along with the leaders of the George Street, South Side Gangsters, Supaul Street, and Martin’s gangs, met in Belize City under the auspices of the Conscious Youth Development Programme and its Director, Sr. Superintendent Edward Broaster and, after heated exchanges, all the gang leaders held hands and prayed. The event occurred shortly after a grenade explosion in Gentle's yard on Kraal Road killed a minor and left two others injured. He later said that he would not retaliate. To prove his word, he later handed in a grenade to the Police.

A few years ago, Gentle was shot in the abdomen in front of his house in an incident when Aniver Palacio, 27, was shot dead. At the time, Gentle was scheduled to be the key witness for the prosecution in a murder trial over the slaying in 2004 of his friend, Nichole Lewis.

Gentle, in the latter years of his life, had also displayed a level of commitment to the sport of football. In 2006, his Kraal Road team earned their place in the spotlight and more recently, in 2010, Gentle led his City Boys United team to victory in the Belize Bank's Super League SemiPro league championship, winning the coveted championship cup, first place medals and $25,000, which Gentle said he would invest to prepare the team for this year's tournament.

Taxi Driver Sentenced for Firearm and Ammunition

Belize City, Wed. Jan. 12, 2011 Taxi driver Ronald Johnson, 26, one of five persons charged with keeping a firearm and ammunition

without a gun license, pled guilty to the charges when he appeared today in the #5 Magistrate’s Court. He was sentenced to two years for each count by Magistrate Albert Hoare.

The charges against the others were withdrawn. They included Kessie Satine, 34, Johnson’s common-on law wife; Dennis Lopez and Deon Neal, 25.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, December 11.The Police went to a house at #6868 Electric Avenue and when they searched it they found a 9mm pistol with 17 rounds in its magazine. The pistol was on the floor of a closet with no door. The Police reported that they saw the pistol when they moved a toy truck.

Romero if he had anything to say before sentence is passed, Romero said he committed the offences because his wife was severely ill and he needed the money to buy medicine. Magistrate Hoare told Romero that even if he was of the mind to order him to pay a fine; he could not do so because of Romero’s illegal immigration status in Belize. He sentenced Romero to 5 years for each count with the stipulation that the sentence is to run consequently and take effect from November 25, 2010 when he was remanded to prison.

The incident occurred at around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 24. Egglia Villanueva, 24, a student, reported to the Police that she and Jiannie Moguel, 18, another student, were sitting on the seawall near to Dolphin Park when they were approached by Romero. Villanueva said Romero grabbed her by her hair and put a knife to her throat. She said she and Moguel feared for their lives so they handed over their belongings which included gold chains, cell phones and a knapsack.

She pursued Romero as Romero ran towards the King’s Park area.

A Police mobile patrol was in the area and when the police saw her pursuing Romero they joined the chase and caught the culprit on A Street. All the stolen items were recovered. Apart from the stolen items, Romero had a knife, 8 inches long with a brown handle.

The charges arose from an incident which occurred on September 17th, 2010. In the incident, Police reported that they pursued a car and the chase ended when the car went into a dead end road off Calle Del Mar Street.

The Police reported that one of the occupants of the car; Jeffrey Flowers, got out and threw an object over a zinc fence. The Police said when they retrieved the object it was a 9mm pistol with 12 rounds of ammunition in its magazine.

Orlando Wade

The trial of Orlando Wade, charged with the murder of Dorla Pitterson began yesterday in the court of Justice Adolph Lucas. The

incident occurred on June 23, 2008 in Sandhill Village.

Pitterson’s body, nude from the waist down, was found in a pit latrine. Dr. Mario Estradaban who did the post mortem examination testified that she was strangled by a rope that was tied around her neck.

Eight other witnesses have testified, among them the chief witness Barry Rosales. Rosales said it was raining when he passed by an abandoned pit latrine and saw a man on top of a woman. Rosales said he passed by the pit latrine a second time and saw the same man on top of the woman. A jury of 8 woman and 4 men is hearing the case. Wade is being represented by attorney Kevin Arthurs. Senior Crown Counsel Yohhanseh Cave is representing the prosecution.

A year on, Haitians cope with wretched memories

They filled the grounds in front of the collapsed cathedral in Haiti's capital. To remember. To cope. To pray.

Wednesday marked the first anniversary of the earthquake that changed the face of a nation.

More than 200,000 people perished last January 12 when the earth shook violently for a few seconds.

Houses toppled, swallowing residents alive. Government offices and landmark buildings, including the Notre Dame cathedral, came tumbling down.

Five days ago, three more bodies were pulled from the rubble in central Port-au-Prince.

Haitians still come to pray at the cathedral every Sunday. On this day, the crowds overwhelmed the small park in front. People embraced one another and cried openly. There was no reason to hide the sorrow that pervades their lives every day.

In one neighborhood, a man woke up residents as he walked through the streets at dawn. He carried a Bible and recited prayers.

Faith is all that many Haitians have left.

For the rest of the world, January 12 is a day to mark the horror that unfolded in Haiti. But Haitians must cope with their memories every day.

Jane-Eileen Fourcand says she is avoiding watching television on Wednesday. She does not need reminders.

Instead, she will quietly remember the death of her mother, killed instantly in the quake, and her father, who was rescued after being buried for 16 hours but died a month later.

Fourcand planned to visit her parents' tomb with flowers in hand and prayers in her heart.

And then, she planned to tell a few jokes.

"Why? Because my mother always said, 'When I die, I want you to be happy about it. Don't cry all over,'" she said. "I know we have to cry to get rid of the pain. But we're going to make it a little better with these jokes we used to do."

At 4:53 p.m., the time the earthquake hit, Haiti fell silent to pay homage to the dead -- and to the millions of lives that were forever changed in just a few seconds.

In some Port-au-Prince neighborhoods, mountains of rubble still stand as they did 12 months ago. The hundreds of tent cities that shelter the displaced were supposed to be temporary.

Their continuing existence makes it

hard to imagine a year has passed.

Many tent city residents have sadly resigned themselves to permanence in those places of squalor.

Several hundred members of organizing committees for 17 makeshift camps marched Wednesday on the streets, determined to cast a spotlight on their plight. They carried a sign saying in Creole: "If I don't stand up, I'm condemned to live in a tent for the rest of my life."

The anniversary of the catastrophe, as the Haitians call it, comes as the Caribbean nation grapples with new crises: a cholera epidemic that has killed more than 3,700 Haitians and a political impasse sparked by allegations of fraud in a presidential election.

International monitors from the Organization of American States decided to wait until the anniversary passed to hand President Rene Preval the results of its election review, which suggests that Preval's handpicked successor be eliminated from contention.

Preval has grown increasingly unpopular as many Haitians perceive the government response to Haiti's troubles has been inadequate. There is a growing tide, too, of criticism of the thousands of aid agencies that operate in the country.

At the United Nations in New York, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon noted that 102 U.N. personnel died in the earthquake. He acknowledged that progress has been slow. "Haiti's streets are still full of rubble," he said. "International aid and investment has not come as quickly as needed or as promised."

But, he added, "We are making progress."

He said the number of people living in camps is half of what it was at the peak of the emergency, and clean water is being provided to 1 million people, and food to 2 million people.

"We will help a new government get on its feet and fulfill its responsibilities to its people and, despite the slow start, recovery and reconstruction is finally beginning in earnest."

But earthquake survivors like Michel Clervil wonder why, a year on, nothing has changed in Haiti, why he hasn't seen any of the money the world sent.

He lost his house and was forced to find shelter in a camp, where his wife, Eliane, died of disease.

Many people are still suffering, he says. "And we don't know why."

15 headless bodies found in Acapulco

The headless bodies of 15 people were found dumped near a shopping center in the tourist city of Acapulco, Mexico, the Guerrero State Public Security office said in a statement Saturday.

The victims are all men between the ages of 25 and 30 years old.

Police were led to the bodies by a group of burning vehicles, the security office said.

A 16th body was found in a nearby car. The victim was a 30-year-old man who was shot to death, the office said.

The bodies were not found in an area frequented by tourists, said

a spokeswoman for the security office.

"It's a shopping center where locals go regularly, but it's not that far away from the tourist areas," she said. "They were found on a popular highway used to get to the tourist area."

The killings are believed to be drug related, she said.

According to authorities, more than 28,000 people have died in Mexico in drug-related violence since 2006.

Police and military forces have stepped up operations in the region in light of the grisly discoveries.

A suspected leader of a Mexican drug cartel was arrested in Tijuana, Mexico, along with four other alleged cartel members, the Mexican military said.

Jesus Israel de la Cruz Lopez is believed to be a leader in the Sinaloa cartel, Mexico's largest drug mafia, which took a strong interest in the region after recent arrests of a rival cartel's leadership.

In a news release Wednesday, the Mexican military said it arrested Cruz Lopez, alias "El Tomate," and confiscated six packages of marijuana weighing about 65 kilograms, several

guns and a GMC truck with Mexican plates.

Last January, Teodoro Garcia Simental, a top leader for the Tijuana cartel, was arrested in La Paz, California. Garcia was a top lieutenant for the Tijuana cartel until he defected to the rival Sinaloa cartel after a power struggle.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon has touted Tijuana as an example of a success story against the drug cartels in his war on organized crime.

However, a Tijuana police spokesman said recently that there has been a resurgence of drug cartel activity in the coastal city.

U.S. authorities discovered about 30 tons of marijuana in November that were part of a smuggling operation using a tunnel under the California-Mexico border.

The 600-yard tunnel -- which featured a rail system, lighting and ventilation -- connected a warehouse in Tijuana to one in an industrial area of San Diego.

Eleven inmates died in a fight at a Mexican prison Tuesday afternoon, the public safety ministry in Durango state said.

The dead inmates appeared to have stab wounds, but prosecutors had not determined an official cause of death, a ministry statement said.

The fight occurred at the same prison where last year the Mexican attorney general's office alleged that inmates were let out to commit killings of rival drug gang members.

An alarm in the prison in Gomez Palacio, Durango, sounded around 4:45 p.m., the safety ministry said, after a brawl began in a processing area.

State prosecutors were investigat-

ing what caused the fight.

In July, top officials in Mexico said that authorities at the prison released and armed several inmates to attack a group of people during a birthday celebration in a shooting that left 17 dead.

Ricardo Najera, a spokesman for the attorney general's office, said authorities allowed a group of inmates to leave the Cereso prison in police vehicles to launch the attack.

Four top prison workers -- including its director -- were named as suspects in the investigation, Najera said.

Police traced the weapons used in the July 18 incident to other violent attacks, Najera said.

CPBL’s resignation from CGA – The real reason

The resignation in 2009 was not based on any direct consideration of benefits to be derived from CGA membership. CPBL documents as far back as 2007 show that a plan was hatched by Henry Canton, William Bowman, Mike Duncker and Ernest Raymond, now owners of Belize Citrus Mutual, a private company, along with BHL, to resign from the CGA and form a new company/association, at the time to be called Citrus Alliance Corporation. The sole aim of the new group was the destruction of the CGA and its 51% majority shareholding of CPBL so that they and BHL could enjoy full control of CPBL. After the decision of the rogue CPBL Board, controlled by BHL, to resign from the CGA, an undertaking was given to the Hon. Prime Minister of Belize that CPBL would rejoin CGA and would continue to pay its membership fees to the CGA. However, the CPBL Board went on to PASS a resolution not to rejoin CGA but to continue paying the fees. Notwithstanding, commencing the current crop year, Henry Canton, the then CEO of CPBL, supported by BHL, discontinued payment of the fees to the CGA, against the undertaking given to the Hon. Prime Minister and to the Supreme Court of Belize. This is also contrary to the resolution adopted by the Board for the payment of these fees.

CGA as Custodian/Guardian of the Belize citrus industry

The CGA in collaboration with the Government of Belize and ORISA, was able to attract $1,600,000 to jump start the control of Citrus Greening in Belize.

The CGA also provides financing to growers in the millions per year for fertilization and upkeep of groves. Since the aftermath of Hurricane Richard the CGA was able to get a grant of $350,000 to fund the purchasing of fertilizer for small farmers whose groves were affected by the hurricane. Additionally, the CGA put a proposal to the Development Finance Corporation that resulted in a line of funding of $4.0 million being made available to all growers in the industry at 9% with two year moratorium and the possibility for refinancing of up to 50%. This line of funding is available to nursery owners who now need to erect screened structures to meet the new guidelines set forth by the Belize Agriculture Health Authority for the certification of citrus nurseries.

This is crucial to the continued growth of the industry.

Even more, the CGA has lobbied with the Government of Belize for and got Citrus Greening to be declared a priority area for FAO funding and has provided the technical assistance in making the application for some $1,000,000 dollars to assist in the control of HLB, including starting diversification into other juice fruits such as passion fruit. This should set the stage for diversifying risk, broadening product lines and increasing the utilization of the processing plants. Additionally, the CGA has been working with a local grant agency to develop a project to attract funding to assist smaller scale citrus nursery operators by providing several community nurseries in different parts of the industry. Belizeans should note that BHL refused to assist growers post-Hurricane Richard.

Sir Allan Fields and Mr. Richard Cozier, of BHL, have stated that CPBL should divest all its citrus groves and have shown little interest in the welfare of citrus growers, particularly the smaller citrus growers. This must be considered very unfortunate as the vast majority of citrus growers are small to medium sized and form the back bone of the citrus industry, provide socio-economic stability for a large sector of the Belizean population.

The Performance of CPBL

The issue here is the performance of the Company from the time BHL decided to engage in preventing CGA from appointing its directors and then seeking to change the normal structure of the Board. In his report to BHL shareholders dated December 14th 2009, the Managing Director offered the following, “Pricing on citrus concentrates has improved significantly (almost double the low in 2009) and thus contracts and sales going forward will be significantly more profitable. Indeed our expectations are that once the pricing remains at current levels, this operation will be significantly more profitable in 2010”.

Let’s examine the performance a little closer, We must stress that sales could have been higher in 09/10 as this was the same period in which product was being sold at US$0.98 per pound solid when the market started at US$1.18 and peaked at $US1.63 per pound solid. BHL should note that the despite the low orange crop more solids were sold in 2009 -2010 fiscal, a period of historical robust market prices. Perhaps better scrutiny and governance as practice at home would have yielded a better performance.

To add, at the Annual General Meeting in 2009, William Bowman, co-owner of BCM with Henry Canton, got up and made the following comment regarding the CPBL grove performance of a loss of $1.6 million, “The average production was mediocre…. He hoped to see some improvement next year as he is aware that this was discussed at the Board level. The Chairman (Mike Duncker) mentioned that the Board is well aware of this fact and has taken the necessary steps to correct the situation.”

However, in 2009 the groves lost $3.8 m and BHL (with the individuals that CGA had removed from the Board but BHL attempted to block their removal) awarded Henry Canton’s private company a three-year renewal of its contract to manage CPBL’s groves. For the 2009-2010 fiscal period the groves lost another $3.52 m despite the improvement in fruit prices!

As stewards of CPBL you should know that CPBL prepares the national fruit forecast and at the time of the fruit forecast in question BHL was denying the CGA from putting its directors on the CPBL. Furthermore you should know that CPBL 476,000 boxes shortfall in orange production represents approximately 56% of the 850,000 boxes shortfall between the forecasted 4.7 million boxes of orange and the actual 3.85 million boxes. BHL should get the facts straight. They presided over the shortfall!

Under the Citrus Processing and Production Act, there is a Harvest Committee comprised of representatives of the CPBL, CGA and the chaired by the Ministry of Agriculture. The Harvest Committee relies on the national fruit forecast as prepared by CPBL to make a master schedule. The law prescribes for the CGA to then communicate with all growers based on the schedule.

BCM has issued a release telling its members that they do not require a license to deliver fruits and for them to get a schedule from the Fruit Logistics Office of CPBL. CPBL has been breaking the law to accommodate BCM’s effort to downplay the legal responsibilities of the CGA to ensure the smooth running of the industry as enshrined in law. Is this kind of illegal behaviour acceptable to BHL? In Closing BHL seems to be trying hard to absolve its self from any participation in the negotiation of the Investment Agreement, which has been a disaster for citrus growers. This seems tantamount to a case of handling “stolen” goods. BHL says it is not a signatory to the agreement. This is not true. BHL is a signatory to the Investment Agreement. BHL has publicly stated that it has taken on board all the recommendation of the Committee of Five report.

CGA is calling on BHL to honour this commitment.

We again invite BHL to work with its partner, the CGA, in this venture. It is imperative that there be a sustainable arrangement, which will be beneficial to the all parties and all the stakeholders who depend on the Belizean citrus industry.

In any battle when you are caught “not ready”, the opponent is automatically put in an overwhelmingly valuable position.

Your vision dictates your choices and even furthermore, how you behave! Vision is the first cousin of purpose and actually if you are alive and reading this right now you have a purpose. A vision is a plan that accomplishes your purposes in life.

Now before we get carried away let me add just a little note of warning. Your true purpose is not what you think it is! Rather it is what God says it is!

Proverbs 19:21 (NIV) 21 A man may have many plans in his heart.

But the Lord's purpose wins out in the end.

Many people go running after many things only to find out after acquiring them that inside they are still unsatisfied.

After reaching the goal of building a new house, buying a new phone or car, or stereo, or computer, whatever it is, if we do not understand purpose we will never be satisfied and will continue to keep searching.

Your purpose is so huge, it is safe even to say it is bigger than you. You were created for a certain purpose! Hence your biggest search should be to determine your purpose! Just a little brata for the Ladies: !!! A male without a purpose is a dangerous person to get married to. He will take you “no where”!!!!

When you know your purpose and have vision, you will not be easily discouraged or thrown all over the place! You will be unsatisfied with just hanging out at the street corner, taking drugs, or just sitting watching television.

Interestingly in church yesterday we heard a story of a man not understanding the purpose of his land. A stranger came along who was more perceptive and aware of the surroundings.

He saw some black liquid stuff somewhere on the property and offered to buy the land which was sold to him for thirty five thousand dollars. The story ended with a broken hearted owner who sold his land “worth millions”, because he was unable to see beyond his own eyes perspective, and was unable to even begin to understand his purpose and the purpose of the things around him!

Begin to search out your purpose and then the purpose of the things around you! Your wife, husband, children, neighbors all have a purpose and as you find yours you will be better able to help them in their quest to find their purpose also!

Don’t accept and settle for anything that is thrown your way, do not believe discouraging demeaning statements thrown at you like: you will never make it, you’re stupid, you’re long and lenky, it’s too hard, or, why don’t you give up?

Rather find your purpose, dream up and create a vision, then begin to diligently chart your course towards accomplishment of this, bringing it all to a reality.

As you go through this year remember… Once you have breath you have a purpose!!!

This award is presented annually in honour of one of BAS’ founding member, James A. news prompted another conversation with my dad during a drive down to the city, and this time we were joined in the conversation by callers to Love FM who threw in their two cents about the murder and about parenting. Because parenting, or lack thereof, is one of the reasons why we are where we are today.

Of that there can be no doubt.

But what makes a parent a good parent? Now that is the question.

According to my dad, to be a good parent in today’s time would probably require a roomful of degrees in psychology, the patience of Job and the wisdom of Solomon. But even that is not a given. A few months ago the fools at the UDP Guardian took one of their usual jabs at me, putting forth their assertion that despite having great parents who are paragons of virtue I am messed up. They weren’t that far off the mark.

But with that said, how do we fix this mess? How can we work to restore morals and good values in our communities? How can we build strength of character in our youths?

How can we mend the rips and tears in our social fabric? Because we have to… there’s no two ways about it.

I don’t have all the answers, but this talk about parenting and morals and values and providing examples to our children took me down another path, and I make no apology for that. I started thinking about the leader of our nation Dean Oliver Barrow and his son what’s his face…no, not the one who has benefitted from his father’s largesse here at home, but the other one – the hit and run son. I didn’t feel like doing the research to find out exactly what he is calling himself now, and frankly, I don’t much care, but there is a point that needs to be made here.

I was reading an interview in some rap magazine the other day and there was an interview with Dean Barrow’s son. Even looking past the fact that every other word was an expletive, his message wasn’t very inspirational – well at least to me since I’m not a thug and have no aspirations to gangsterhood. I don’t feel like slapping women or exploiting them or shooting the Police or anybody else for that matter or dealing dope. If I did want to do any of those things Dean Barrow’s son would be my mentor, my idol. I would look to him for guidance. But I don’t, so I don’t. That is how he lives his life.

That is his message. That is what his music is all about.

At a time when our children need a role model more than ever before, Dean Oliver Barrow gave them his son, a convicted felon, a man who served time in prison for a violent crime. At a time when our streets are filled with young thugs looking to make their bones, our prime minister offered his son as an example. He stood proudly and proclaimed – ‘this is my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased.’ We were informed that this semi-literate, foul mouthed, violence-advocating, common street thug should be an example to all our children all across this nation. And then we wonder why we are the way we are.

No, I don’t have all the answers when it comes to repairing the social fabric, but I do know that the confused convicted felon is not one of those answers. He is the farthest things from what our children need right now and that is a fact. When Dean Oliver foists his son on us and then plays stupid when we cry foul, it makes me wonder if he is at all serious about repairing what ails us.

Social, Economic and Environmental Justice…the new mantra….

Carolyn Trench-Sandiford Deputy Party Leader There comes a point in time when stocktaking of our country, our party and oneself becomes a necessity, and not an option. Yes, my article 2011…the year of the Rebirth in last week’s edition of the Belize Times painted a sordid portrait of the state of affairs in Belize. Nonetheless, it was a real picture and one which must be of concern to all of us.

It pointed to a trajectory of political, economic and societal disintegration and oblivion, which no one desires, and concluded that in order to reverse this apparent inevitability, a New Belize must be born, not created, with a new political, social and economic order.

It further stated that only so will we be able to break the cycle of perpetual subjection of our people from internal and external forces,

and enable them to live a better quality of life.

The purpose of the People’s United Party as stated in article 5 of the Constitution is ‘….to create a New BELIZE through the peaceful, constructive, Belizean revolution, which will bring to all Belizeans a better life and just share of the national wealth.’ Undoubtedly, the architects of our constitution understood the intrinsic link between achieving a better quality of life, and equity in the allocation and distribution of the wealth of the nation. Implicit is that one cannot be divorced from the other, as the latter is necessary to achieve the former.

The term applied to capture this was ‘social justice’, and implied in it, economic justice. It became the philosophical mantra of the party, and generally refers to the idea of creating a society that is based on principles of equality, solidarity, the entitlement of basic rights and human dignity. It is saying that people have a right to live in secure and safe communities, in decent homes, have equal access to justice, education and quality health care and recreational facilities; have freedom of expression and protection against discrimination and exploitation, amongst other rights and entitlements.

On October 17th 2010, the national convention of the Party unanimously approved amendments to the Constitution of the Party.

One such amendment was a new mantra…a broader and deeper mantra ‘…social, economic and environmental justice.’ This is now embedded in the philosophy of the

Party. Economic justice is no longer implied. It is explicit. In addition, environmental justice, as a necessity to achieving and sustaining social and economic justice, not only for this generation, but also for the next, is included.

Economic justice traditionally refers to the right of persons to be employed, of workers to organize and their entitlement to a fair wage.

Thus it involves the organization of economic systems to enable each person to earn a living, enter into contracts, exchange goods and services with others and otherwise produce an independent material foundation for his or her economic sustenance.

It surrounds the individual, and also determines their place in the social order, as your rank on the ladder of the economic order, is the same in the social order.

Economic justice has evolved to be synonymous with distributive justice, which seeks to redress the disparities in the social order and living conditions of people, as a consequence of the inequity in the allocation and distribution of the wealth, or resources, which countries are endowed with, either directly, or indirectly, intentionally or unintentionally. This is because simply organizing and reorganizing the economic systems has proven to be insufficient in enabling people to have a better quality of life. Why? Historically, persons have been excluded from participating to their full potential in the economic and social systems of the country, and benefitting from them. They have not been able to access resources or opportunities, either by virtue of

their place in the social and economic order, the policies, programmes and decisions of government, their political and religious affiliation, their ethnicity, gender, age, physical and mental disabilities or geographic location.

Environmental justice, while encompassing the right to live in a healthy and decent physical environment with access to clean drinking water and adequate infrastructure and transportation [roads, buses etc.], now includes the right of individuals and communities to have the use, benefit and enjoyment of the natural resources surrounding their communities, as well as the responsibility, with other decision makers and stakeholders, to practise sound environmental stewardship to ensure that the environment continue to benefit generations to come, locally and nationally.

Social, economic and environmental justice cannot be divorced from each other, and must be the mantra of any government.

Only when decisions are anchored in these principles, a just system of governance can emerge and exist, out of which a new political, social and economic order will be born to reverse the trajectory of the country, as only such an order can ensure equality in access to resources and opportunities and environmental sustainability, which will bring about social progress, not only for this generation, but for the next, and only so can the revolution continue, and a NEW BELIZE be born, which will bring to all Belizeans a better life and a just share of the national wealth……

Team Typhoon’s Luigi Urbina wins Weekend Warriors New Year’s race

to Belize City, once around the 2nd roundabout on the Northern Highway entering the City and sprinting to the finish line in front of M&M Engineering to win the 1st place trophy.

Team British Caribbean Bank/ F.T.Williams’ Barney Brown finished 2nd in the sprint, with Truckers Posse’s Michael Lewis taking 3rd place.

Brown’s teammate Ray Cattouse Sr was 4th and Santino “Chief” Castillo placed 5th, all top 5 won trophies; Santino also won the trophy for best B-category rider.

Conorquie finished 7th, Clean Masters’ Shawn Howard was 8th, Brown’s teammate George Abraham was 9th and M&M Engineering’s Leam Stewart completed the top 10.

Team Santino’s Raymond Hyde finished 11th, and M&M Engineering’s Preston Martinez clocked 2:26:24 in his 12th place finish. Team Typhoon’s Orlando De la Fuente clocked 2:26:30 in his 13th place finish also winning a trophy as the best C-category rider.

Belize competes for Copa de Naciones Team Belize’s left the Jewel to travel to Panama on to compete in Central America’s Copa de Naciones football tournament to be held in Panama City from January 14 to 23. The Belize boys takes on the defending champs, Panama, in their first game on Friday, January 14.

They play their second game against El Salvador on Sunday January 16, and take on Nicaragua in their third game on Tuesday January 18. They need to win at least two of their games to rank among the top two in their group to advance to the next round in which they would meet the top two from the other group which includes football powerhouses Honduras, Costa Rica and Guatemala.

Team Belize lost 1-2 to Hispano Futbol Club at the Carlos Miranda

Stadium, in Comayagua, Comayagua last Thursday. Hispano fielded a squad that included two Brazilians and a Colombian, as well as three Honduran players recently returned from playing in Germany. The Belize boys kept Hispano to a 0-0 draw until the 86th minute when Hispano scored their first goal. The Belize defense blundered into giving up a penalty, and Hispano converted to lead 2-0. The game was into injury time when Belizean midfielder Elroy Smith scored a consolation goal in the 92nd minute.

Team Belize lost again 2-1 to first division team Necaxa at the Marcelo Tinoco Stadium in Siguatepeque on Saturday, January 8. Deon Macaulay and Danny Jimenez led the Belize attacks. With the help of midfielders Victor Morales, Elroy Kuylen, Kareem Haylock and Orlando “Lichy Jimenez, ande Elroy Smith, Ian Gaynair and Everald Trapp anchored the defense Necaxa scored their first goal in the 30th minute to lead

Queen Square Anglican & Holy Redeemer girls win in primary schools basketball The Queen Square Anglican Primary School girls and Holy Redeemer RC School girls posted big wins when the Belize City primary schools basketball c o m p e t i t i o n o rg a n i z e d b y t h e National Sports Council at the Belize City Center on Tuesday, January 12 kicked off. The Queen Square girls won 15-11 over the St. Martin de Porres RC School girls. Kayla Bowen led the Queen Square girls with 15 points while Colleen Thompson scored 7pts for St. Martin de Porres. The Holy Redeemer School girls won 8-0 over the Ephesus 7th Day Adventist School in Wednesday’s second game. Kayla Arnold scored all 8 points for Holy Redeemer School.

On Tuesday, January 12, the St. John’s Anglican girls posted a 21-2 blowout win over the James Garbutt Primary School girls in the opening game of the tournament. Fogging of the vehicle windows occurs when the air inside the vehicle is moist. In this cool time of year, when the temperature drops the air can’t hold its moisture and much of it is deposited on the windows. The key to hold down the fogging is not to bring any additional moisture inside the vehicle such as damp clothes and dripping umbrellas.

The first thing you can do when the damp air starts fogging up the glass is to wash the windows. Wash windshields but DO NOT WIPE THE WINDOWS with a rag or paper towels as this will only smear them. Also, it’s an exercise in futility as you may have moved moisture from the car to a rag but its moisture in the AIR which is causing it to fog up. Instead, hit the “defrost” button on high heat and high blower and let it run for a few minutes.

The moisture in the car will keep frustrating your anti-fogging efforts as long as you keep the air conditioner re-circulating. Instead, pull in fresh air which will have the effect of diluting the moisture and thus reduce the fogging. Safe driving!

Asesinato # 1 en la segunda semana del año Nuevo

El primer asesinato del año nuevo no tardo mucho en llegar y ocurrió alrededor de las 6: 20 el domingo por la noche en la calle Bagdad, sólo un paso fuera de la carretera del cementerio, que es una de las arterias más activas de la antigua capital y pocos minutos en coche del centro de la ciudad.

La víctima, Michael Malic, 20, fue disparado varias veces a corta distancia por dos personas que salieron de un todoterreno negro y vacíaron sus armas en él, él se encontraba en la ventana de una tienda de pequeños abarrotes esperando para comprar un cigarrillo. Había dejado su hogar pocos minutos antes diciendo que iba a visitar a un amigo. Su asesinato tuvo lugar sólo a un minuto de su casa en el callejón de Taylor. El Oficial de prensa del Departamento de la policía, Sargento Fitzroy Yearwood, dijo que aunque

todavía determinaran un motivo para el primer homicidio de la nación del 2011, Malic tenía amigos en bandas rivales y el Depar-

tamento está estudiando de cerca este ángulo. La policia obtuvo mas de 20 casquillos de la escena, y eran de dos tipos diferentes: 9 mm y lingotes de calibre.45 conocidos como prohibidos para ser utilizado por miembros de una de las notorias bandas callejeras.

Malic no era un santo en las calles. Las cosas ya estaban mal para los trabajadores debido a la pausa impuesta en sus servicios, en un momento crucial del año cuando las familias nesecitan presupuesto para comprar regalos de Navidad para sus seres queridos y ahorrar para la reapertura de la escuela para sus hijos.

La mayoría de los trabajadores todavía no han obtenido ni un centavo en salarios y beneficios, porque el departamento de trabajo dice que no puede verificar la legitimidad de sus empleos y

todavía está esperando recibir la documentación adecuada para revisar que son elegibles para recibir cualquier endemnizacion.

La situación pone a los empleados en posiciones muy precarias y vulnerables económicamente ya que muchos de ellos tienen préstamos bancarios, sin mencionar el alquiler de sus casas.

Para ensombrecer mas su triste situacion parece no existir ninguna solución a la vista para ellos y con una economía escasa, las posibilidades de obtener un trabajo en otro lugar es dificil en este momento. Los empleados, la mayoría de los cuales son choferes, conductores y mecánicos, todavía están con la esperanza de que algo podría solucionarse rápidamente a fin de que puedan llevar el muy nesecitado efectivo a sus hogares. Este es un tema más que este Gobierno incompetente no parece estar interesado en tratar de resolver para los 275 trabajadores que ahora se quedaron praticamente desamparados.

Exámenes de 275 Beliceños policía demuestran desempleados para la necesidad de el nuevo año

El Ministerio de la policía siempre fanfarronea cuando el departamento de policía adquiere nuevos reclutas para la matriculación. Las ceremonias siempre se celebran con discursos elaborados. Al finalizar el ejercicio, uno pensaría que los policías de Belice son los mejores agentes capacitados en la región. Bueno, por el contrario, información que se filtró a los medios de comunicación el viernes pasado, revela que no sólo esto no es cierto, pero que agentes de la policía de Belice caen tan poco en una formación adecuada que la mayoría de ellos aún no puede pasar los exámenes de promoción rutinaria del Departamento. En otras palabras, por lo general, un oficial tiene un tiempo de (su) vida avanzando con éxito a un rango superior. El examen de las dos partes se llevaron acabo el 27 de noviembre del 2010, y 479 policías y mujeres, que van en filas de Oficiales a Sargento de todo Belice tuvieron el desafío para intentar avanzar al siguiente

Fracturas y Fisuras

En su última gira por el circuito de medios de comunicación, el primer ministro parecia fatigado y indispuesto. Sus palabras eran suaves, preparadas, ensayadas, furtivas, astutas y resbaladizas como siempre, pero él parecía muy cansado. Aunque es aceptable ese 'intranquilo luce la cabeza que porta la corona', el actual líder de la nación ha sido acosado por un sin fin de crisis, pequeñas y grandes, internas y nacionales. En el corto espacio de tres años la pompa y el poder de aclamación generalizada ha sido reemplazado por un mal sabor de boca. Cuando el primer Ministro emitió su discurso eloquente de año nuevo que contenía promesas gloriosas, él fue objeto de burla. Cuando en esa mismo discurso Dean Oliver Barrow se refirió a lo maravilloso que fue el el año pasado y mucho más por venir, fue ridiculizado abiertamente por su ingenuidad y abandono de la realidad en lo que solía ser la joya. Ha sido ese tipo de año para el primer ministro – un año durante el cual se ha visto obligado a mantener su compostura en la escena nacional, pero sin maquillaje apenas puede ocultar las grietas en la fachada de su liderazgo.

D e n t r o d e l U D P, l a s fracturas y fisuras continuarán multiplicándose a como se acercan los ciclos de Convención de abanderados y el proceso se ha tornado feo realmente rápido.

El partido ha sido atacado por los participantes en el proceso que se sienten que han sido víctimas, objeto de abusos y manipulados por sus propia gente. Con sólo tres convenios de hecho, la ropa sucia que ha salido a relucir ha sido sorprendente y enormemente perjudicial para el UDP. No es de extrañar que el líder de nuestra nacion estuviera temblando durante su ultima aparicion ante los medios de communication.

En la primera Convención celebrada en Caribbean Shores, el oponente de Carlos Perdomo lo acribillo con denuncias de corrupción, mala gestión y i n c o m p e t e n c i a . P e r d o mo lo g r ó aferrarse a través de una inyección masiva de dinero e influencia política por colegas y miembros de familia adinerados. Pero el daño ya estaba hecho, y el partido pago un precio considerable por la victoria. En la Convención de OrangeWalk Este, el evento fue aún mejor financiada, más expansiva y extravagante. Al f i n a l G a s p a r Ve g a l o g r o u n a victoria, pero una vez más con daños masivos al partido.

Tanto el titular derrotado y otro contrincante fueron vocales con sus acusaciones, acusando al ganador de comprar votos y la

manipulación de las listas de votantes. Material archivado en vídeo en las noticias apoyaba la queja de que el ganador en efecto habia comprado votos y la lluvia de criticas fue tremenda.

La Convención fue aclamada como una victoria por grandes cantidades de dinero y el UDP fue acusado por su propia gente de trabajar contra la poblacion de Belice.

Un prominente miembro UDP en el campamento del retador ha declarado abiertamente sobre la noticia de que el ganador representante de la zona de la Bahía de Corozal y Ministro UDP Pablo Marin, hizo uso indebido del Departamento de Elections and Boundaries para inscripción de votantes ilegalmente. Es una acusación muy grave y le ha costado muy caro al UDP. Agregando a todo, esta lo que es una creciente brecha entre el ministro Patrick Faber y el líder adjunto del P a r t i d o G a s p a r Ve g a q u e f u e tema de enfoque durante la C o n v e n c i ó n e n O r a n g e Wa l k East.

atencion y se le escuchó al líder adjunto referirse a Faber como una 'cría insolente'. Mientras que el primer ministro se apresuró para proporcionar cierto grado de control de daños, la fisura debajo de la curita se está pudriendo y causando aún más daño a un partido que ya se encuentra enfermo. Pero no importa cuan intranquilo se encuentre Barrow bajo el peso de su corona, el hizo su cama y ahora debe acostarse en el. Rodeado de un montón de rufianes incompetentes las cosas no mejoraran en los días próximos para el primer ministro. Las cosas se pondran definitivamente peor. El UDP se cae a pedazos alrededor del primer ministro y no hay absolutamente nada que se puede hacer al respecto. Para la población de Belice el tiempo de espera ha sido suficientemente largo para un pueblo que ha luchado y sufrido debajo de esta administracion UDP.

Este es mi amado hijo

Por: Mike Rudon Jr. El tejido social en Belice ha sido quebrantado y no es una acusación política o condena. Solo digo lo que es.

Ahora es diferente de lo que solía ser, en nuestras casas y en nuestras calles y en nuestras comunidades. Preguntele a quien sea.. No sucedió de un dia para otro o incluso sobre el paso de unos pocos años. Y no es un cambio positivo, es mas, a como estan las cosas estamos mal muy mal.

Recuerdo que conducia en compania de mi padre hace casi un año y platicabamos sobre el "cambio".

En ese entonces la promiscuidad sexual entre nuestros jovenes fue el tema de conversacion de la ciudad después de la liberación y la circulación de algunos videos pornográficos locales.

Había uno en particular que tuvo lugar en un salón de clases al oeste del pais.

Una niña vestida con uniforme de la escuela realizo una gran variedad de actos sexualess a un niño mientras que sus amigos ovacionaban y se burlaban, ofreciendo sugerencias lascivas y tomaban fotos y vídeos. Me parecio que todos eran menores de 12 años de edad, aunque la joven realizaba los actos con tanto gusto y perspicacia como la mayoría de las estrellas porno. Vea usted, a me gusta el sexo tanto como a la persona normal y probablemente más que la mayoría, pero ese video fue terrible. ¿Y me preguntaba cómo estos niños, y en particular esta niña había llegado a ese punto, con esa actitud que tipo de futuro les espera?

El cuerpo de una niña de 12 años fue encontrado cerca del puente Haulover, dejando a una familia sumida en el dolor y una comunidad cautelosa y enojada. Se han escuchado rumores alegando la reaparición de Jack, o un nuevo Jack, aunque la policía ha estado callado sobre el asesinato. La noticia fue tema de conversación con mi padre durante un trayecto a la ciudad, y esta vez se unio a nuestro tema de conversación personas que se encontraban escuchando Love FM y que opinaron sobre el asesinato y sobre la crianza de los hijos. Porque la crianza de los hijos, o la falta de crianza, es una de las razones del por qué estamos donde estamos hoy. De eso no cabe ninguna duda. ¿Pero que hace que un padre sea un buen padre? Ahora, esa es la pregunta del millon. De acuerdo con mi padre ser un buen padre en estos tiempos tan dificiles probablemente requeriría un certificado en psicología,

la paciencia de Job y la sabiduría de Salomón. Pero incluso eso no esta determinado . Hace unos meses los tontos en el periodico Guardián del UDP dijeron de que a pesar de tener padres ejemplares y virtuosos yo soy un desastre. Y no estan lejos de la razon.

Pero dicho esto, ¿cómo arreglamos este lío? ¿Cómo podemos trabajar para restaurar la moral y los buenos valores en nuestras comunidades? ¿Cómo podemos construir fuerza de carácter en nuestros jóvenes? ¿Cómo podemos nosotros enmendar las roturas y lágrimas en nuestro tejido social?

Porque no tenemos otra solucion mas que hacerlo.

No tengo todas las respuestas, pero esta charla sobre la crianza de los hijos y de la moral y los valores y proporcionar ejemplos a nuestros hijos me llevan por otro camino, y no me disculpo por ello. Empecé a pensar sobre el líder de nuestra nación Dean Oliver Barrow y su hijo, no, no aquel que se ha beneficiado de la generosidad de su padre aquí en casa, pero del otro chico: el gangster. No me interesa hacer la investigación para saber exactamente lo que se llama a sí mismo ahora, no me interesa su vida pero quiero llegar a un punto aqui. El otro día leí una entrevista en alguna revista de rap y mire una entrevista con el hijo de Dean Barrow. Incluso recuerdo el hecho de que cada frase que salia de su boca era un expletivo, su mensaje no fue muy inspirador, por lo menos para mí, ya que no soy un gangster y no tengo aspiraciones a gángsterhood. No quiero darle cachetadas a mujeres o explotarlas o dispararle a la policía o a cualquier otra persona para ese caso o tratar con drogas. Si me gustaran alguna de esas cosas el hijo de Dean Barrow sería mi mentor, mi ídolo. Yo miraria hacia el para obtener orientación. Asi es cómo el vive su vida. Ese es su mensaje. Ese es lo que

es su música.

En un momento cuando nuestros hijos necesitan más que nunca un modelo a seguir, Dean Oliver Barrow nos dio a su hijo, un delincuente convicto, un hombre que sirvió tiempo en prisión por un delito violento. En un momento cuando nuestras calles se llenan de jóvenes matones, nuestro primer ministro ofreció a su hijo como ejemplo. Él estaba orgulloso y proclamó: "Este es mi hijo amado, con quien estoy bien complacido." Se nos informó que este semianalfabeta, mal hablado, que aboga por la violencia, debe ser un ejemplo para todos nuestros hijos a lo largo de esta nación. Y, a continuación, nos preguntamos por qué estamos como estamos. No, no tengo todas las respuestas cuando se trata de reparar el tejido social, pero sé que este delincuente confundido no es una de esas respuestas. Ejemplos como el es lo menos que nuestros hijos necesitan ahora y eso es un hecho. Cuando Dean Oliver nos dio a su hijo como ejemplo a nuestros jovenes y luego gritamos foul y a continuacion nuestro Primer Ministro se hace del malentendido entonces me hace preguntarme si habla en serio cuando dice que reparara todo lo que nos afecta!
