0) Abstract Machines - rake, gouge, plow, dig - jiggle, seed, feed, reap - seal, shake, squeeze - flood. Man-made artificially created sceneries come up consequently. Postindustrial landscapes follow. Wilderness is cultivated and turned into industrial areas. Leftover sites and non-places with scenic landscape gardens. Landscape scars remain on the ground. 1) Research objective Located in the center of the brown coal mining area Welzow-Süd in the east of Germany the „Institut für Angewandte Landschaftsarchäologie“ (Institute for applied Landscape Archeology) is being found. The institute aims to update the current concept of landscape. It deals with fleeting areas, man-made short-lived geographies. Artificial areas are to be verified for „Landschaftlichkeit“ (landscapeability) to be able to become „Landscape“. The new landscapes will be charted and archived in an abstract way so that its future can be simulated over a long period. The aim is to consider landscape not as a final state but rather as a web of nonlinear processes, that is characterised by permanent alterations and a wealth of possible spectacles. The institute is made of several tracts, which will be erected among the coal district Welzow-Süd over a long period. During the multiannual construction process of the institute the spoil dumping of the mine is being continued by the energy provider „Vattenfall“. The geography around the institute is subjected to a permanent transformation until at least 2044. Spatially the institute is based upon a modular construction system derived from the US-military. It was used in great number for intercontinental missiles type TITAN-II until 1963. 2) Concept of Landscape Landscape does not only consist of geological, morphological and physical features like material, shape, structure, color, etc. These actual facts alone are not making landscape an aesthetic phenomenon. All aesthetic factors making geography „landscape“ are not engraved as informations in the landscape‘s material. They are non-matter as they depend on individual experimental perceptivity like smell, acoustic, haptic, emotion and temporary factors like culture, society, economy, politics, history etc. 3) Procedure A_“Landscape Sigil“ The „Institute of applied Landscape Archeology“ discusses the necessity to save scenic genomes - called „Soil Good“. Samples of man-made wastelands arrive at the institute and have the chance to become a „landscape“. Subsequently a council of landscape reviewer is adjudging these samples. They are testing them for „Landschaftlichkeit“ (landscapeability). Finally, they may award the „Landscape Sigil“. B_ Coding/ Storage The „Landscape Gouging Machine“ receives abstract landscape codes including the material informations of a certain landscape. The machine mills the code inside the „Topographic Storage Shaft“. The non-material informations are saved in longish „Memory Capsules“ and placed in the shaft within a fixed grid. C_Model An artificially generated model of a certain landscape is able to be produced in different scales from this landscape code. Environmental or man-made alterations can be simulated with that model in different test sides. It is possible to fastforward or reverse long-term processes.

I) Portal The concierge receives the „Application for Landschaftlichkeit“ together with geological samples. It is also the place where the landscape reviewers and the researchers arrive. They are picked up by the service staff and inducted into the institutes circumstances. II) Base Station This is a place to come together, eat, sleep and communicate. Everybody is adequately supplied here. III) Soil Good Encyclopaedia The „Soil Good Encyclopaedia“ is the largest tract. It is a compilation of geological and aesthetic contents constituting earth. It makes use of former methods and medias that deal with the awarenesses and depiction of the earth´s surface. The landscape reviewers meet at „Dissecting and Plenar Hall“ to discuss about the „Landschaftlichkeit“ of a send in area. Finally, they might award the „Landscape Sigil“.
IV) Landscape Gouging Machine The landscape gouging machine is situated in an increasing number of several slim concrete cylinders that are growing slowly. On the top of each cylinder there is a cylindrical machinery. This instrument is equipped with a read-write head that is able to slide up and down to storage topographic informations by plotting clay layers at the cylinder‘s inner surface. A new „Landscape“ is formed on the top of an already plotted one. It can be experienced physically yet is it still abstract. When a next „Landscape“ is about to be stored, the formwork of the cylinder slips upwards. Thus the building grows taller and taller. The plotted „Landscapes“ are hardened, visible, experienceable and again downloadable.
V) Test Sites At the „Test Sites“ long-term alterations can be simulated on an artificial landscape model. The large round hangar is unsupported and appears clinically tidy. The ceiling consists of a rotatable scaffold made of steel beams, which is holding a dense tangle of apparatuses. They are able to plot every sediment in different scale. Deserts, mountains, coasts and even wooded hillsides can be reproduced abstractly. In the next step it is possible to alter the model landscape with artificial weather, seasons and human-made influences. In this tract artificial and natural spectacles are prepared. The next high tide of the century, avalanches, slumpings, sandstorms and thunderstorms need to be calculated meticulously. The time can be reaped and stretched to simulate slow motion or fast-forward. The Test Sites are isolated from all environmental influences of Welzow-Süd because the tests with the landscape models can occupy much time. Nearby is a depot of construction machines, a sediment grinder and a sorting machine. They recycle the used base materials. Additionally a row of silos store all materials of the periodic system to form detailed landscape models.

Manifesto
„The Criminal Law Act 1977 covers occupation of property at section 6. It defines „violence for securing entry“ as an offence, if „(a) there is someone present on those premises at the time who is opposed to the entry which the violence is intended to secure; and (b) the person using or threatening the violence knows that that is the case.“
Hidden Borough is a city borough, a district, a neighborhood, an arrondissement, a bezirk, in essence whatever such an entity might be labeled in its respective city. What differentiates us from the others is that we supersede any specific geographic classification and/or connotation. We are the friction from which the city as we know it emerged, the laughter and the tears, the joy and the anger, the decency and the depravity. We are the catalyst inducing the moment between the physical and the mental world, the gate to a subconscious state of human affairs often ignored or relegated to the background. We are the moment that gate opens. We remain seamlessly nestled into the existing fabric of the city – its undeniable creator – and while not easily located on a map, we are nevertheless easily accessible and open to any and all. Hidden Borough is the perceivable connection between the real and the thought, the rational and the irrational. We abide between the existing, among the relics of the real, reversing the orientation and directionality of everyday life by creating an interface between the tangible and the intangible. We endure wherever our citizens decide to act, and are visible through their presence, brought to life through their motives and ideas. We are an autonomous entity within an existing framework, one in the same with the surroundings and yet independent, in symbiosis with all around us.
LEGAL WARNING Section 6 Criminal Law Act 1977 As amended by Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994
TAKE NOTICE THAT we live in this property, it is our home and we intend to stay here. THAT at all times there is at least one person in this property. THAT any entry or attempt to enter into this property without our permission is a criminal offence as any one of us who is in physical possession is opposed to entry without our permission. THAT if you attempt to enter by violence or by threatening violence we will prosecute you. You may receive a sentence of up to six months imprisonment and/or a fine of up to ÂŁ5,000. THAT if you want to get us out you will have to issue a claim in the County Court or in the High Court, or produce to us a written statement or certificate in terms of S.12A Criminal Law Act, 1977 (as inserted by Criminal Justice and Public Order Act, 1994). THAT it is an offence under S.12A (8) Criminal Law Act 1977 (as amended) to knowingly make a false statement to obtain a written statement for the purposes of S. 12A. A person guilty of such an offence may receive a sentence of up to six months imprisonment and/or a fine of up to ÂŁ5,000. Signed
