We are thrilled to bring you the second issue of Lucid, a journal of writing by first-generation students at the University of California, Irvine and published by the Composition Program.
This issue’s theme, “Transitions and Transformations,” yielded a collection of writing and art that showcases students’ resilience, creativity and immeasurable contributions to our campus community.
Presented in the style of a zine, which as a form challenges what stories are told, and by whom, the writing and art in this issue feels essential, like an antidote to this year of struggle. From mental health research to advocacy for AAPI communities; meditations on the meanings of names to screenplays about police violence; to journalism, poetry and art about life changed and changing, these works are also a strong indication of where transitions and transformations can lead us. Each piece helps us see who will lead and chart a path forward.
