È necessario puntualizzare la differenza tra il termine ecologia portato alla ribalta dal movimento ambientalista negli anni ‘60 e ’70, ed il suo corretto significato scientifico.

Per gli ambientalisti l’ecologia è la disciplina in grado di fornire una “guida” per le relazioni dell’uomo con il proprio ambiente e, con la diffusione del movimento, è diventato un termine utilizzato quotidianamente e spesso in modo improprio. Tale tendenza si manifesta ancora oggi, confondendo spesso erroneamente l’ecologia con l’ambientalismo, con la conservazione della natura o con altri concetti simili.

L’ambientalismo è una forma di attivismo sociale con lo scopo di migliorare l’ambiente, soprattutto attraverso attività educative pubbliche, propaganda d’idee, programmi legislativi e convenzioni.

L’ecologia invece è una scienza, un complesso organico di conoscenze. Essa è definita come “lo studio scientifico delle relazioni tra gli organismi e l’ambiente”. All’interno di questo vasto ambito scientifico, voglio porre l’accento su alcune specifiche discipline ecologiche: - ecologia del paesaggio, la quale studia la struttura, le funzioni e le trasformazioni nello spazio e nel tempo dei paesaggi, e cioè i raggruppamenti sistemici di ecosistemi, in tutte le loro diverse accezioni; - ecologia urbana e sociale, che si occupa dell’interazione tra il comportamento umano e gli ambienti urbani. La trasformazione dell’uno in funzione degli altri; - ecologia culturale, cioè il filone di ricerca delle scienze etnoantropologiche che investiga le relazioni tra gli aspetti socio-culturali dei gruppi umani e l’ambiente nel quale vivono.

Una delle problematiche più in rilievo nella società moderna riguarda senza dubbio il concetto di spreco. Dove nasce?

Quanto costa? Perché esiste? Come evitarlo?

Si sente parlare spesso di “spreco di risorse energetiche”, “spreco di materie prime”, “spreco di denaro”, rapportandosi ad esso in termini materialistici, quantificabili, associandolo al mondo della produzione, all’uso delle risorse, alla gestione economico-finanziaria.

Che dire invece dello spreco “degli uomini”?

L’intento di questo lavoro è appunto quello di focalizzare l’attenzione sullo spreco delle risorse umane: intelligenza, pensiero, socialità, attenzione, presenza, gestione del tempo.

Una sorta di ecologia dell’individuo.

All’interno di nuovi fenomeni culturali di massa ha preso molto piede, non a caso in parallelo alla dilagante diffusione dei social network, il fenomeno del gaming online (o multiplayer), il quale consente a più persone situate in diverse postazioni sparse per il mondo di giocare allo stesso videogioco attraverso internet.

Esistono molte tipologie differenti di videogioco online, ma la più interessante dal punto di vista socio-antropologico è sicuramente il MMORPG(massive multiplayer online role playing game/gioco di ruolo online multigiocatore di massa). Esso è un videogioco di ruolo, dove il personaggio creato dal giocatore interagisce con gli altri partecipanti e si sviluppa, secondo stabilite regole e dinamiche, in un mondo parallelo formato da centinaia di migliaia (in alcuni casi anche milioni) di persone. Il giocatore agisce in questo mondo virtuale per mezzo di un personaggio, interagendo con altri controllati dai vari utenti, svolgendo una serie di compiti che gli vengono via via assegnati. Procedendo di missione in missione, progredisce nelle proprie capacità di combattimento e acquisisce nuovi oggetti o denaro che può utilizzare direttamente o commerciare con altri giocatori.

Sono milioni in tutto il mondo le persone che ogni giorno dedicano il loro tempo a questo tipo di attività su internet, il cui successo è dovuto soprattutto alle enormi comunità on-line. In ogni MMORPG la società dei giocatori è spesso organizzata in “clan” o in “gilde” favorendo quindi il gioco di gruppo e il senso di appartenenza, creando un legame fra le persone anche per mesi o anni a prescindere dal gioco.

I videogiocatori in generale, ma più marcatamente i giocatori di MMORPG, possono sfociare nella parziale o più completa estraneità dal mondo reale. Una vera e propria dipendenza da videogioco (videogame addiction), al pari di quella da sostanze o da gioco d’azzardo, in quanto i suoi effetti (o sintomi), sono molto simili ad esse.

Le innumerevoli testimonianze di videogiocatori (o ex) presenti su internet forniscono un quadro sconcertante.

Si parla di perdita della cognizione del tempo durante le

sessioni di gioco, di difficoltà ad occupare la propria mente per altri interessi (amici, studio, famiglia, quotidianità), si arriva a percepire un senso di frustrazione/fallimento anche al di fuori del gioco (specie se il proprio personaggio non ha raggiunto determinati obbiettivi), fino a considerare migliore il mondo virtuale rispetto quello reale. È un’alterazione comportamentale che da semplice e comune abitudine diventa una ricerca esagerata del piacere attraverso l’atto del giocare, spesso sfociando nella condizione patologica. La persona dipendente perde ogni possibilità di controllo sull’abitudine, arrivando a spostare le proprie risorse vitali nel mondo virtuale.

Questo progetto fotografico vuole visualizzare gli elementi più significativi di questo fenomeno attraverso un gioco di contrapposizioni contrastanti. Esso è composto da quattro elementi raggruppati in due.

Una workstation, ovvero una postazione di gioco.

In molte delle infinite sub-comunità (rispetto a quelle ufficiali) come forum, blog, gruppi di discussione, chatroom, ci sono utenti che dibattono sulla vita all’interno dei giochi, si scambiano consigli, mostrano i loro progressi. In questa giungla di informazioni si trovano anche giocatori (spesso abituali) che mettono in mostra le loro postazioni di gioco, cosiddette workstation, fotografandole. Spesso intervengono su queste foto inserendo dei numeri su gli oggetti più significativi dei loro ambienti, per poi spiegare attraverso una legenda il loro significato funzionale o simbolico. Sono tentativi narcisistici per guadagnare ulteriore prestigio agli occhi degli altri utenti. Testimonianze dirette di quanto il gioco possa influenzare anche solo visivamente la vita reale di questi individui.

Questa immagine mostra il paesaggio virtuale, gli elementi visuali che compongono l’interfaccia dell’utente, i colori, gli strumenti, tutto quello in cui i giocatori vengono assorbiti nella loro esperienza di gioco. L’immagine codifica il linguaggio con cui videogioco e giocatore si scambiano informazioni e valori, si seducono ed entrano in conflitto, dando origine al fenomeno assorbente dell’interazione.

In contrapposizione ad essi una serie di testimonianze dirette di giocatori dipendenti i quali raccontano a posteriori (da disintossicati) la loro esperienza, i loro sfoghi, come nelle comunità di recupero. Una sorta di Giocatori Anonimi. Il sito che registra queste testimonianze conta, dal 2006 ad oggi, più di 50mila inserimenti.

Infine una fotografia da me scattata che cerchi di quantificare visualmente e fermare su pellicola il tempo che si perde guardando lo schermo. Colore, lunghissima esposizione: come una sessione media di gioco.

7. My photography stuff. (film, not digital) 8. 22” Acer flat-panel monitor. Actually significantly cheaper than replacing my old 21” NEC CRT would have been, and much less desk space taken up. Under it, you can a see a large book on Ghosts, a hearthstone plushie, speakers for my surround system, sticky-note tabs, lollipops, etc.

9. Movies/music/etc. This is where my MST3K version of Manos: Hands of Fate resides. And manuals for video games. Just above that, software and other office-type supplies 10. Lights, pens, my magnetic board, etc.

11. Books, supplies in the ghost bags, etc.

12. My old machine with its antiquated AMD Barton 3000 core, 1gig of RAM, FoxConn WinFast 748K7AA mobo, nVidia 256MB card, and other various generally underwhelming stats. I built it myself some years ago, and I’m saving my pennies now to build a new one.

World of Warcraft, often referred to as WoW, is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG).

With more than 12 million subscribers as of October 2010, WoW is currently the world’s most-subscribed MMORPG, and holds the Guinness World Record for the most popular MMORPG. In April 2008, this game was estimated to hold 62 percent of the MMORPG subscription market.

As with other MMORPGs, players control a character avatar (also referred to a toon) within a game world in third- or first-person view, exploring the landscape, fighting various monsters, completing quests, and interacting with non-player characters or other players online around the world.

#52291 I played for just under 5 years. Looking back I really wish I had that time back. So much time wasted. If you play wow it becomes the only thing that matters to you. For me it was an escape. I couldn’t deal with life when I was playing. I quit playing because of the horrible people that play the game.

I quit because no one playing wow knows how to live in a society. I decided to not go back when I checked out my old guilds website and saw that quite a few of them had called out of work to play wow on the cataclysm release date. They played non-stop from midnight until they hit 85 which to my amazement was later that same day. It made me feel sorry for them. I’m now trying to get my life back on track and make up for lost time. I’m glad now that blizzard made the game as bad as it is. I’m glad the game is overrun with assholes. Makes it easier to stay away.

#38067 D-E-L-E-T-E. Seven keystrokes to freedom. I think the hardest thing for the newly quit is that huge void in your day that used to be filled with WoW. I was putting in about 50 hours a week and let me tell you thats a huge void to fill. By about day 3 I was out of my mind bored. I simply didn’t see what I could do to fill those empty hours other than playing WoW. My suggestion is to make a list before you quit of all the things you want to get done with those hours and stick to it. It is so easy to rationalize and think your way back into playing if you don’t have something to keep you busy. After a few months the need to play will fade and you will find yourself getting alot more done in life. Write down a list of reasons why you quit and keep it with you. That way a few months down the line when you have your life back under control and you convince yourself your a changed man/ woman and can handle playing again you can pull it out and know what the end result will be.

#21595 I think this whole WoW addiction thing indicates a bigger problem with our entire society. I am a 30 year old professional. When I quit WoW, all I did with my time was watch TV at night for 5-6 hours until bed. I just could not remember who I was and it seemed I had given up on trying to find out. It speaks volumes that people would cling to something so pointless and mindnumbing as WoW or TV, rather then face the world around us. Most of the people I went to college with can’t seem to get their act together. My friends where hard working students, but it is like they have given up on being adults. Most of them play WoW as well. It is like we all got training on how to be good employees, but I think we missed the class on how to LIVE. Under the sarcastic jokes, there is an overwhelming feeling of powerlessness and hopelessness among us all. I can only imagine that the generations behind us will have it even worse. We have lost something since Gen X. When did medicating ourselves with machines ever become “ok”? It’s not living, it’s being a junkie.

#2 I was meeting more people online than offline. And I’m pretty sure the hot girls I was meeting online weren’t nearly as hot offline. Worse, I even have a sneaking suspicion they were teenage. Teenage boys. :(

#52290 Because you only live once. Because every second you waste on that game is getting you closer to the disaster, one way or another. I quit 6 months ago and the best word to descrbe it - Relief. I did have good times in WoW, no doubt about it, I played arena mostly and that was elating, fun experience. That is, when you win. It is one of the most frustrating,irritating things when you don’t,not by being outsmarted, but being outcritted, outgeared or simply by facing negating class. It’s not a fair game, my friends, and it’s a waste of time in the end. And you get nothing, nothing at all in RL, all my skillfulness, priest’s cunniness, los, mana burning...why did i spend 4 years doing that? Not sure.

#38066 Im wowsober for a few days now, and this is the second time i quit. the first time i deleted my characters but the GM’s can restore those.. this time i did it differently, i opened notepad, typed in 2 lines of random characters, 1st line is username, 2nd line is password, i created a new gmail with the username and password, changed the emailaddress of my wow account, changed the password, changed the home address, after i changed everything, i closed notepad without saving, i have no idea what the password or email is, so retrieving my account is not doable or REALLY hard. I think blizzard should have something build in that deletes your account forever, i would actually pay for that just to make sure i cant play anymore. i also have to say that i feel so much better now i have quit the game, no more coming home and starting up wow, yesterday i went to the gym for the first time in a year... im really satisfied now, and i love it!

#21594 My WoW experience and letting go of it has convinced me of one thing .With WoW as in all addictions /self destructive habits etc nothing and nobody can convince you to stop until you wake up and realize the truth yourself.Self realization is the ultimate kick in the gut.Took me five minutes to delete my chars and the game and one goddamn year to stop craving to play it again (Whew)not to mention regaining some of the social skills i once had .But in those initial five minutes i felt reborn like i had come out of a coma. Life is the greatest mmorpg of all time , and the graphics are truly awesome.

Play it sometime.
