About My name is Luca Melis, I’m from Sardinia, Italy, and I recently concluded a one year experience in NOAHH Architects, where I started as Intern and I continued as Junior Architect. During this time, I followed residential, cultural and educational projects. Some of the projects were developed in BIM environment. This allowed me to improve the skills that I started to develop during the University years. After my Bachelor Degree achieved in Cagliari, I decided to join Politecnico di Milano to continue my formation, taking part in the Master Course of Building Architecture, where the design part is strongly related to the technological one. During this time, I also had a short internship in Degli Esposti Architetti. Next to architecture, an important role in my life is represented by photography, cinema and books.

Transformation of Public Prosecutor’s Office Maastricht, Netherlands Competition The former Sint Annadal regional hospital in Maastricht - the current headquarters of the Limburg District Court – will be transformed from a building designed for one specific user into a building that hosts two different users: the Limburg District Court and the Public Prosecutor’s Office, who each have their own identity and their own workplace culture. The existing structure is the ‘host’ and backbone of the building. The basis is formed by leaving as many existing elements intact as possible, and reusing them. With as few interventions as possible, we aim for maximum gain. We view our design additions - the ‘guests’ as a type of furniture. Visitors are received in a light, green, transparent entrance area, instead of walking directly into the narrow security checkpoint. A welcome, comfortable atmosphere is prevalent throughout the building.

Proposal for the office spaces

Historical pictures of the hospital have been taken as inspiration to design the new office spaces, excluding small rooms and preferring open spaces and natural light. The former chapel is the social heart of the building where the employees of the Limburg District Court and the Public Prosecutor’s Office are able to meet informally. It is a multifunctional space that is used throughout the day for various activities. The chapel is brought back its original state: a characteristic, commodious space. A new demountable meeting station will be placed in this space for an 8-year period of use.

Villa Oosterwold Almere, Netherlands

Final design

The villa stands for a new, activity-based, way of living. The typology is based on a lifecycle approach in which the house is designed according to use - living - sleeping - working – accommodation – and care. The design creates the possibility to expand or compress the space according to the user’s wishes. The villa consists of three separate parts connected by glass intermediate parts. Each section is designed as its own pavilion with its own facility unit. ‘Living’ is the largest pavilion with a dining and living room. ‘Sleeping’ is a peaceful pavilion surrounded by lavish green on all sides. ‘Working’ is a pavilion closest to the street, and it also incorporates the accommodation facilities for guests.

Each volume has a central utility unit, that allows the space and the functions to spread around in a very dynamic and flexible way.

Working

The wooden structure and the solar panels guarantee a low carbon impact architecture.

Social housing De Meker Middelburg, Netherlands

Final design

De Meker is a new residential building with 32 apartments in the social housing sector. NOAHH has focused on the quality of the flexible spatial layout of the dwellings as well as the quality of the collective space on the ground floor. The collective space is designed as a chain of living spaces situated around an indoor storage area, with a central void at the heart of the building that visually connects all floors.

The ground floor host storage spaces for every housing unit. In addition to these, in the short sides of the building we can find some shared spaces (the blue ones) that are designed in a flexible way and that can be used to better connect the building with its immediate outside spaces. The apartments are developed through 2 typlogies. The short side ones present a central core around which the house can develop in a free way, as a unique space, or with one bedroom, or with two bedrooms. The long side apartments are designed in order to guarantee the maximum amount of light in the main rooms.

Debbautshoek Housing Plan Zelzate, Belgium

Competition

This proposal for a competition of 200 housing units put the focus on the sharing spaces in between the buildings and the improvement of the interactions between the people. This neighbourhood is currently a residential area with a very high percentage of paved area and private low-mainteinance courtyards. The main idea of the project is to reverse this approach, in order to create a catalyst to improve the social condition and the quality of life in the area.

The final design is the combination of different layers of intervention. After removing the existing houses, the roads are transformed into pedestrian ribbons, cleaning the area from car traffic. Some public yards are introduced to increase the relationships between the neighbours and the open air-activities. All of these elements are connected through the pedestrian veins. The small clusters of houses share also some semi-private courtyards, where share activities can take place, such as smallscale agriculture.

Community and infrastructure center Imizamo Yethu, Cape Town, South Africa Located in a super dense township in Cape Town, Imizamo Yethu, this integrated center represents a useful tool for the wellness of the area, trying to solve a series of social and cultural problems. The infrastructural part of the project, represented by the tower, collects water from rain and from fog, produce agriculture and guarantee a panoramic terrace on the top. The social part, more integrated in the landscape and submerged into the context, surrounded by the houses, provides education, alimentation and sanitation.

The community centre is the central element of a larger intervention, where the introduction of pedestrian and vehicular roads (through to the relocation of houses on top of platforms) allows to increase safety and accessibility of the area. In the crossing points of this road network, additional intervention with smaller towers are created to provide potable water, public space and gathering areas.

The project aims to improve the conditions of the area through the implementation of both social and infrastructural elements. The submerged building provides flexible spaces where several activities can be run, changing its configuration and its usability according to the time of the day. The tower provides the basic framework to answer technological needs, becoming a landmark not only from a visual point of view.

Train station Sesto San Giovanni, Lombardy, Italy The second semester of the first year in Politecnico di Milano was based on Complex Architectures. The site, in Sesto San Giovanni, is a train station located between the old part of the city (north) and the masterplan proposed by Renzo Piano (south). The general idea behind this project was to create a crossing system for the railways to connect these two sides of the city without any limitation. The project aims to guarantee the pedestrian and the bicycle crossing, avoiding the strong cut in the city operated by the transition of the railways.

Structural axonometry

Exploded axonometry (assembling process)

The biggest challenge of this suspended train station is represented by the structure, which basically is formed by two curved trusses on the two sides, connected in the upper part and to which the bridge is hanged. This laboratory in particular had a huge focus on the interoperability in BIM environment. Several softwares have been used during the semester to verify and improve the choices of the whole design process: Grasshopper, Tekla, Ladybug, Velux, Synchro, Solibri.

Multipurpose building Fagnano Olona, Lombardy, Italy The first semester project in Politecnico di Milano was focused on the technical part of the architecture. The interested location is an area managed by a company that organise events to revitalize the area. The aim of the course was to develop a closed building to be used for different functions and with a particular focus on the technology. The result is a building with a polyhedral roof, made by triangles with different shapes and angles. The structure is made of concrete columns, wooden beams and metal joints.

Wine and food promotion center Las Plassas castle, Sardinia, Italy The Las Plassas castle is a fortress of the XI century, located in the region of Marmilla.Nowadays, the project expresses the castle new service to the land, the promotion of wine and food production. The ruins of the castle helped us understand “what, how and where” to build: where we found the most serious failings, are added boxlike shapes in white concrete that recalls the original shape of the castle; where the historical walls are found in good condition, we designed places of standstill and viewing, made by steel and wood. The promotion of the land is made by the kitchen with the tasting of the typical products and the 360° view.
