Special lubricants for the pharmaceutical sector
In the pharmaceutical industry, good manufacturing practices are extremely important to maintain product quality. And among these good practices, lubricants play a crucial role.
Across Brazil, pharmaceutical industries work day and night to produce medicines to control diseases and relieve pain. The responsibility is great. Machines need to continue to operate without failures and free from contamination.
Using the right lubricants for the right applications ensures that machines remain
operational and free from contaminants. But how do you know which lubricant is the most suitable?
LUBRICANT SELECTION FOR THE PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY
Selecting the right lubricant for the pharmaceutical industry or other industries begins by assessing the lubrication needs of each component and equipment: temperature, speed, load, application method, resistance to water washout, etc.
However, unlike other segments, the pharmaceutical industry must consider one additional requirement: whether the lubricant needs to be food grade or not.
The same requirements used to select lubricants for the pharmaceutical industry must be used for the cosmetics and personal care industries.
Food grade lubricants are used to minimize risks and ensure product safety, even if the equipment or component does not have direct contact with the finished product.
WHEN TO USE FOOD GRADE LUBRICANT
Food grade lubricants, in addition to ensuring safety, have all the qualities of a special lubricant: resistance to oxidation, protection against wear, corrosion, water resistance, among others, which ensures operational reliability and incre-
ased productivity.
Food grade lubricants must follow ISO 21469 standards and be registered with NSF, which classifies them according to the level of contact with the finished product.
For equipment not located in the production area and that does not have potential contact with products, packaging or production machines, NSF H2 lubricants are used. Examples of equipment: pumps, compressors, gearboxes and hydraulic systems.
Since there is no risk of contact with the products, some special lubricants certified to ISO 21469 (even without NSF H2 certification) can meet the requirements. Talk to your distributor.
For machines inside the production area, even with physical barriers that prevent contact with the product, it is preferable to use NSF H1 lubricants, to increase safety measures and
good practices. This way, there is no risk of mixing food-grade lubricants with common lubricants.
It is important to remember that some of the most modern machines in the pharmaceutical sector do not require lubrication, so first check the equipment manufacturer’s instructions.
Major brands such as Klüber and Rocol have food-grade lines, with ISO 21469 and NSF certification, as well as Kosher and Halal, which meet the demands of the pharmaceutical segment with excellence, increase plant availability and extend the useful life of components. ■

Food Grade Spray Grease for Chains
Chains are present in all segments of the industry, in the most diverse applications, performing a complex movement, with permanent friction, and which depends on good lubrication to maintain its good functioning and longevity.
