Racing Oils: Testing Methods Prove

There Really Are Differences Between Them BY JOHN MARTIN, Contributing Writer @ Engine Builder Magazine

T

hose of you who know me are aware that I’m a scientist, not totally unlike the guy from the Big Bang Theory. I’m a physicist by training (M. S.), but I’ve always worked as a mechanical engineer, since I’m such a motorhead. With a background like mine, I’m not much on sales presentations. I’m much more comfortable with real data, not BS; and qualified people, not marketers, to evaluate when attempting to draw conclusions. This sometimes gets me in hot water in the oil industry (and not to mention with certain magazine editors)! One of the presentations made at this year’s SEMA Motorsports Parts Manufacturers Council (MPMC) Media Trade Conference really caught my attention. For years we’ve had technically developed racing oils competing in the marketplace with armchair formulated racing oils (usually a fully formulated oil plus ZDDP), ZDDP supplements, diesel engine oils and European oil formulations. One of the premier racing oil developers finally took the time (18 months) and spent the money (megabucks) to quantify the performance differences between these various products. This is some great, useful science! First, let me give you a little lube oil testing background. All oils that wish to obtain API SN, CJ-4 or ILSSAC GF-5 credentials must pass the ASTM Sequence IIIG test. This test utilizes a 3.8L Buick V6 engine with a flat-tappet cam and only 0.325˝ valve lift. Valve spring pressures are only 205 psi open. Not many of these engines can be seen on the racetrack.

Compare these operating conditions to your race engine. NHRA Pro Stock engines utilize about 0.600˝ cam lobe lift (1.1 to 1.2˝ at the valve) and valve spring pressures approaching 1,500 psi open. Realizing that most racers use cams with about 0.500˝ lobe lift and lesser spring pressures, these laboratory engine tests were conducted to reflect the more typical cam lift/ valve spring pressure conditions. A carefully built small block Chevy engine was repeatedly tested. The engine utilized small base circle cams with 0.492˝ lift and 300 psi open valve spring pressures. The tests included both a break-in cycle (lasting 30 minutes) and a 2-hour durability cycle with a full power pull every 5 minutes. All test cams were prepared identically with no coatings and measured prior to break-in, after break-in, and upon completion of the durability test using the Adcole 911 precision camshaft measurement apparatus (an incredibly accurate measuring device). Break-in oils were used if the race oil supplier provided them. Eighteen months of testing produced many pages of graphs and tables of data, which I will not bore you with here. Instead, I will relay my impressions of what this data showed me. The data obtained during camshaft break-in showed several interesting results. A major API CJ-4 SAE 15W 40 diesel engine oil actually failed 5 cam lobes during the break-in (a fail was determined to be over 30 microns cam lobe wear). This isn’t really as surprising as I initially thought.

We know that typical API SN gasoline oils don’t have sufficient ZDDP to protect cam lobes, but API CI-4 and CI-4 plus diesel oils usually had sufficient ZDDP. However, with the advent of the new API CJ-4 and CK-4 diesel oil specifications, a limit of 1.0% wt sulfated ash (SA) was established for emissions reduction. The sulfated ash of a diesel oil is the sum of sulfated ash contributed by both detergent and ZDDP.

oils, which I know to be arm-chaired formulations, produced roughly five times as much average cam lobe wear as did the racing oils developed using science and laboratory engine testing. Marketing claims don’t guarantee good racing oils. In fact, one of these oil marketers has since requested that their additive supplier switch them to a more scientifically developed formulation.

In essence, this places an upper limit on ZDDP content since diesels need higher quantities of detergents. We now know the new CK-4 oils cannot adequately protect flat tappet cams and lifters when new. Good info.

I won’t tell you who this is, but if you conduct elemental analysis on new oil samples, you will observe changes in the elemental composition (Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphorus and Zinc) of this racing oil before and after the switch in additive packages.

Interestingly enough, a new API CK-4 oil was tested with added ZDDP. It also failed the break-in test with two bad cam lobes. This indicates, as I have said on many occasions, that adding ZDDP does not guarantee cam and lifter protection. ZDDP must be added to the oil under controlled conditions to prevent its premature activation. No other oils failed the break-in test limits. Interestingly, the validity of using break-in oils was verified. Even the poorest performing break-in oil provided a quarter of the wear seen with the best racing oils not utilizing a break-in oil. One breakin oil provided a third of the wear of the other two break-in oils. When every 0.001˝ of valve lift produces additional horsepower, break-in and operational wear should be minimized. This can mean a lot of horsepower after significant engine operation.

It was also interesting to observe that heavier oils (e.g., SAE 15 W-50) provided more wear protection than the lighter racing oils. Although the differences weren’t catastrophic, the engine builder must always balance up-front horsepower with longterm longevity. This is why NASCAR engines don’t run oils as thin as NHRA Pro Stock racers do. In one case, you need over 500 miles of valve train durability. In the other case, you only need 5-10 miles of valve train durability. All-inall, this was very good oil testing data to peruse, and I was able to verify a lot of things I had always felt to be true. How to Prepare for the Drag Strip BY SPENCER WILLIAMS, Lubrication Specialties, Inc.

A

s Title Sponsor of the NHRDA and Outlaw Diesel Super Series Pro Street class sponsor we get to interact with diesel performance enthusiasts all over the country. Some truck owners have parachutes and nitrous oxide systems; others want to get on the strip for the first time. Let’s talk about what it takes to get on the drag strip! Check your truck out. On the road, its good practice to inspect your truck from top to bottom every so often. If you want to get on the strip this will be the first place to start. Check for nails or screws in your tires, make sure your battery is secure, address fluid leaks, check the taillights, and even washing the body and bed off are good places to start. Before you’re allowed to race, your truck will be tech inspected by a track official. Check with the event planner ahead of time to see what you need to have done in order to pass tech. These inspections ensure your safety and the other racer’s safety, so don’t try to cut corners!

Maintenance. Corresponding with inspecting your truck in the step above, make sure to keep up on your truck’s maintenance. Make sure your coolant recovery or catch can is installed and check your neutral safety switch. Basic maintenance will be more than enough: fresh fluids, tires free of dry rot and cracks, brakes in optimal condition, etc. You drove the truck there under its own power, a tow truck home could cost more than getting onto the track.

Leave the sandals at home. While you don’t need a top of the line fire suit with matching racing shoes; make sure you wear comfortable, proper clothing. Tennis shoes, pants, and long sleeve shirts are a good starting point and will keep you from running out to a store. If your truck is running 13.99 seconds or quicker in the quarter mile, you’ll need to shop for a helmet. NHRDA requires a recent SNELL approved helmet or an SFI rated helmet. Pack some tools, a gas can, tire pressure gauge and some snacks.

A dose of DIESEL EXTREME. We know what you’re thinking; how can a fuel additive help? DIESEL EXTREME will ensure the fuel entering your combustion chamber is optimized for burn by addressing fuel quality issues like low cetane and moisture. Overtime, carbon deposits from burnt fuel and other foreign particles can form on the tips of your injectors, affecting how the fuel enters the chamber. This sounds minuscule but these deposits can affect everything from power output to emissions. Manufacturers spend countless money and time to research and test fuel spray pressure, speed, breakup length and pattern only for it to be thrown off by these deposits. A quick dose of DIESEL EXTREME every six months will ensure your fuel system is ready to go.

Lose the weight. Don’t worry, this step does not require a treadmill. Remove the spare tire and any tools you might have in the toolbox or behind your seat. Make sure you bring the jack, spare and some tools to the track, but remove them in the pits. Each time you need to leave the pits ensure there’s no loose junk in the cab that might move or roll; water bottles make their way under pedals more often than you’d think! Have your fuel tank at roughly one quarter capacity. If you installed after-market wheels consider their weight with the factory wheels you have in the shed.

Ready to roll. Make sure to have your AC and other accessories turned off. Roll the windows up and make sure your seat belt is tight. You’ll typically have better traction on all seasons if your truck is in 4x4; pick a setting and be sure to be in it before getting up to the line. If you’re in 4x4 then drive around the water box; if racing in 2WD feel free to drive around the water, back up into it and spin the tires. Street tires or DOT legal drag radials do not have much to benefit from the burnout, but how many other places are you allowed to do one? Talk to guys that are faster than you and take notes; his modifications or even tire pressure could help lower your time.

L

ubrication Specialties, Inc. initiated third party dynamometer testing through Firepunk Diesel in Plain City, Ohio. The horsepower and torque effects of two industry-leading oil additives were evaluated through the following series of

dynamometer tests. Hot Shot’s Secret FR3 FRICTION REDUCER was tested against a competitor’s additive (Competitor X). This evaluation utilized a DynoTech chassis dynamometer to determine the results of the tested products on separate trucks. All testing was completed on the same day, by the same driver, with the truck remaining on the dynamometer for the duration of its test. All results shown in this document were collected and reported by the third party Firepunk Diesel. Test trucks included a 2016 Ram 3500 with the 6.7L Cummins engine and a 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 equipped with the 6.7L Cummins. The 2016 Ram was subject to a series of five baseline dynamometer tests to establish a baseline average. After initial baseline averages of 349.44 horsepower and 654.4 ft/lbs of torque were established, Competitor X’s oil additive was added to the engine oil system at the ratio recommended on the product’s label. After 30 minutes of idling while on the dynamometer to disperse Competitor X within the oil system, five tests were completed.

With Competitor X added to the oil system, Firepunk Diesel found an average of 353.48 horsepower. The added 4.04 horsepower equates to a 1.1% increase in horsepower. The results were recorded and the truck was removed from the dynamometer. The 2007 Dodge Ram was then subject to a series of five baseline dynamometer tests to establish a baseline average. After initial baseline averages of 331.02 horsepower and 634.77 ft/lbs of torque were established, Hot Shot’s Secret FR3 FRICTION REDUCER was added to the engine oil system at the ratio recommended on the product’s label. After 30 minutes of idling while on the dynamometer to disperse the FR3 within the oil system, five tests were completed. The average for these five tests were 345.97 horsepower and 652.7 ft/lbs of torque. This is an increase of 14.95 horsepower and 17.93 ft/ lbs of torque.

Why it works Hot Shot’s Secret FR3 FRICTION REDUCER utilizes patented carbon nano particles to fill in microscopic irregularities on the machined surfaces in an engine. FR3 is able to affect power output of an engine with its ability to restore the compression of an engine’s combustion chamber and increase the efficiency of an engine by reducing friction.
