Tools and Resources
Things to Consider:
Tablet: iPad 32GB with Wi-Fi
Patient should have ability to stand or sit very still for 3 minutes. Age, medications, room activity, medical equipment and more can affect this. Caregiver may hold child on lap.
Room/ environment must provide enough space for movement of scanning staff member. If space is restricted, two staff members can use “hand off” method to capture as full a scan as possible.
Sufficient time should be allotted. A minimum of 15 minutes is needed for an experienced staff person to complete a session which includes patient education and preparation, room preparation and scan.
If a patient wants to hold a toy or stuffed animal, best results will occur if it is held or hugged against the patient’s chest.
Multiple people may be scanned as a group. More time and room space will be needed, a playroom is ideal. People should be grouped very closely, with no space in between them. This will likely require post production editing.
Medical equipment may be scanned with the patient if placed as close as possible. Most tubes can be removed in post production editing if desired.

Our "Patient and Family 3D Portrait" project aims to capture special moments in a unique and beautiful way. Using 3D scanning technology, our staff can take three dimensional images of patients and their families in their rooms or in the Child Life Zone. Scans are then processed and transferred to our 3D printer to create one of a kind treasures. These sculpted moments can serve as powerful keepsakes and legacy pieces as well as instruments of play. Using the same process, child life staff can create objects for play or tools for medical education, such as prints of site specific medical equipment and machines.
