Our Janeen Holmes Gilliam Endowed English horn Chair, Susetta Rockett, will render a poignant performance of Sibelius’ “Swan of Tuonela.”

May tonight’s Bruckner Symphony No. 8 be a mighty introduction to next season’s theme, “Symphonic Scenes.” Bruckner was considered by many as the grandfather of film music. It is fitting that we wrap our final masterworks concert with “Bruckner’s Towering 8th”; in preparation for our 2022-2023 season. With its vast and perfect architecture of the work, we dedicate the masterpiece to everyone who helped realize the architecturally and acoustically perfect Buddy Holly Hall of Arts and Sciences.

SUSETTA ROCKETT Susetta Rockett holds the Janeen Holmes Gilliam English horn Chair with the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra. She is currently oboe faculty at Abilene Christian, HardinSimmons, and McMurry Universities in Abilene, TX. Mrs. Rockett performs frequently throughout Texas and the United States; most recently as acting principal oboe with the Abilene Philharmonic and the Leland Musical Arts Celebration Concert Series in Leland, MI. While in New England, she performed with the New England Philharmonic, the Gardner Chamber Orchestra, and has performed concerts at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, and Boston’s Symphony Hall. As a sought-after teacher, she has been invited to perform and give masterclasses at the University of Texas at Arlington, Texas Tech University, Lynn Conservatory, Stephen F. Austin University, San Angelo State University, Central Michigan University, and has been a Premiere Instructor for Bocal Majority summer double reed camps for several years.

A founding member of the Lone Star Wind Orchestra in Dallas, TX, Mrs. Rockett is featured on two albums released by Naxos Records. She maintains a busy private teaching studio, reed making company, and is the Orchestra Personnel and Education Manager for the Abilene Philharmonic. She is the director of the Heavenly Rest Chamber Music Concert Series at the Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest and performs frequently with her chamber ensemble the Key City Winds. Mrs. Rockett received her degrees in Music Education and Performance from Texas Tech University, and a Master’s in Oboe Performance with distinction from the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, MA. Her principal teachers include Wayne Rapier and Amy Anderson, and she has worked with Mark Ackerman, Erin Hannigan, David Matthews, and Steven Lickman. Mrs. Rockett resides in Abilene, TX with her husband and two daughters and considers Lubbock her second home.

DAVID IN-JAE CHO Winner, 2007 Eduardo Mata International Conducting Competition Born in Seoul, Korea, David immigrated to the United States in 1985.

David received a variety of music lessons during his childhood in Palos Verdes, California, before focusing his energy exclusively on the piano.

He later attended Oberlin College and Conservatory, where he received his Bachelor of Music in piano performance. In 1996, David won the E. Nakamichi Concerto Competition at the Aspen Music Festival and was awarded the Arthur Dann Prize at the Oberlin Conservatory.

In 1999, while acquiring his Master of Music in piano performance at the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University, David was invited

by Robert Spano and Seiji Ozawa to attend the prestigious Tanglewood Music Center as a Merrill Lynch Conducting Fellow. David was then invited by Larry Rachleff to study at Rice University, where he served as guest conductor for the Shepherd School Orchestras while acquiring his Master of Music in instrumental conducting. David was subsequently invited by the Vienna Philharmonic to serve as an assistant conductor.

As the recipient of the Karajan Fellowship, David has enjoyed residencies at the annual Salzburg Festival in Austria. In 2003, David was invited by Leonard Slatkin to participate in the National Conducting Institute, during which time he made his début with the National Symphony Orchestra at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

During the 2003-2004 season, David was selected to spend a year as the conducting fellow of the new world symphony under the mentorship of Michael Tilson Thomas. While on tour with the New World Symphony in New York City, David made his Carnegie Hall début conducting works by Copland and Tchaikovsky. During the orchestra’s Rome tour, David made his début at the Academy of Santa Cecilia, conducting works by Luciano Berio and John Adams. David was then invited by his mentor, Larry Rachleff, to serve as the resident conductor of the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra from 2004-2006. During the 2006-2007 season, David held the Bruno Walter resident conductor chair with the ensemble.

During his tenure as the associate conductor of Utah Symphony | Utah Opera (2006-2011), David won first prize at the Eduardo Mata International Conducting Competition in Mexico City, which resulted in numerous conducting engagements in Europe, Asia, and South America. He has conducted the symphonies of Seattle, Houston, Austin, Memphis, Fort Wayne, Baton Rouge, and Shreveport. He has collaborated with such guests artist as Yo-Yo Ma, Renée Fleming, Joshua Bell, Frederica von Stade, Sarah Chang, Daniel Müller-Schott, Jennifer Koh, Leila Josefowicz, Jennifer Frautschi and Alexander Kobrin. During previous summers, David made appearances at the Aspen Music Festival and the Grand Teton Music Festival.

After heralded guest appearances with the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra in 2007 and 2009, David was appointed as the orchestra’s seventh music director in 2011. He began his tenure with the LSO in the 2012-2013 season and is now actively involved in community engagements.

PROGRAM NOTES Jean Sibelius: The Swan of Tuonela from Four Legends from the Kalevala, Op. 22 As Jean Sibelius came to maturity as man and musician, his country lived under the growing threat of absorption into the Russian Empire. Finland had been a Grand Duchy of Russia since 1809, but it enjoyed a great degree of autonomous freedom, with its own parliament and court system. Starting during the reign of Czar Alexander III and continuing with Nicolas II, Russia began to limit the rights of Finns, curtailing the authority of parliament, mandating military service, and eventually dissolving the Finnish army.

Rather than taking up arms, the Finns fought back with their culture against the encroachment on their rights from the Russian Bear. Like Verdi in Italy during the rise of the risorgimenti, Sibelius and his music served as the spearhead of Finnish resistance. Premiering less than two months after the Czarist decree dissolving the Finnish parliament, Sibelius’ tone poem Finlandia served as the rallying cry for the Finnish patriotism.

Yet Sibelius was not a political composer, but one steeped in the history and folklore of his native land. His great dramatic symphony Kullervo, and works like the Four Legends from the Kalevala, Pohjola’s Daughter, En Saga, and Luonnotar gave musical voice to the mythical past and to the national pride of the Finns in a way that no political statement could possibly match. Yet beyond any political or social considerations, Sibelius distilled the late-Romantic style into his own musical language that would become more organic, more concentrated, and more concise throughout his compositional career.

The Swan of Tuonela began life as the prelude to The Building of the Boat, a grand opera that Sibelius intended to rival the scale and scope of Wagnerian music dramas. Sibelius soured on Wagner’s compositional methods soon thereafter, and The Swan of Tuonela was published with three other short symphonic poems as the suite Four Legends from the Kalevala, Op. 22. Each of the four works depicts an adventure from the life of the mythic Finnish hero Lemminkäinen, the central figure of the Kalevala, the national epic of Finland.

Sibelius inscribed the following words on the score: “Tuonela, the land of death, the hell of Finnish mythology, is surrounded by a large river of black waters and a rapid current, in which The Swan of Tuonela glides majestically, singing.“ Sibelius scores the work for solo English horn, oboe, bass clarinet, two bassoons, four horns, three trombones, timpani, bass drum, harp and muted strings – an ensemble of dark orchestral colors suitable for depicting the desolation of Tuonela. The English horn is the voice of the swan, singing her dark lament over a lush string texture, divided into as many as thirteen separate parts. While a brief shaft of sunlight pierces the gloom (harp arpeggios over a rich string chord in C major), the horrors of Tuonela soon return, and the swan swims off into the fog, her final utterance heard over ominous timpani strokes and the eerie sonority of tremolo col legno strings (playing with the wood of the bow).

Anton Bruckner: Symphony No. 8 in C minor Anton Bruckner’s personality seemed to be composed of equal parts naiveté and sophistication. On the one hand, he composed monumental symphonies of staggering power and emotional depth, he was considered one of the greatest organists of his time, and he was revered as a masterful teacher of organ, music theory and counterpoint.

Yet Bruckner was largely an outsider in the Viennese society of his time, privately ridiculed for his provincial manners, plain and often threadbare clothing, and his unfashionably close-cropped haircut and brush mustache. At best socially awkward, Bruckner once gave conductor Hans Richter (one of the greatest conductors of his time) a small coin as a tip after a rehearsal of his Fourth Symphony and told Richter to stop in at a bar on the way home and drink to his health. Richter was kind enough to graciously accept the coin and kept it on his watch chain as a souvenir for the rest of his life.

Vienna at the end of the nineteenth century was also a flashpoint for the ongoing debate between conservative musicians who rallied behind the music of Brahms, and the more avant-garde loyalists to the music of Richard Wagner. While Bruckner’s earlier music derives from the style of Schubert, Schumann, and Mendelssohn, as he matured he was drawn into the Wagnerian circle. His support of Wagner earned him the wrath of the more reactionary voices in Vienna, most notably the extremely influential music critic of the Neue Freie Presse, Eduard Hanslick, who never hesitated to heap critical ridicule and scorn upon the latest score from Bruckner’s pen.

As a result, success as a composer came very slowly to Bruckner, though he seemed perfectly content with his post as an organist at the St. Florian monastery near Linz, and later as a professor of counterpoint and organ at the Vienna Conservatory. He began to take a more serious approach to composition at the age of 37, immersing himself in studies of harmony and counterpoint, finally achieving success with the first performance of his D minor Mass in 1864.

Success as a symphonist was even later in coming. Of his nine numbered symphonies (two shelved early works were later numbered “0” and “00”), it was only the first performance of the Seventh Symphony in 1884, performed by the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra conducted by the legendary Arthur Nikisch, where Bruckner could bask in sincere universal acclamation from the audience. The Leipzig success was repeated a few months later in Munich, where one of Bruckner’s ardent supporters, Hermann Levi, directed the performance, again to rapturous applause.

In a lifetime full of disappointments as a composer, these first performances of the Seventh fired Bruckner’s imagination, and he was determined to harness this positive energy to his creative advantage. He began sketching the Eighth Symphony almost immediately, working with great intensity and concentration. When finished in August of 1887, it was Bruckner’s longest symphonic work, rivaled only by the Fifth Symphony. In his burst of creative enthusiasm, he sent the score to Hermann Levi in September 1887 with a brief note: 2021-2022 SEASON

At long last the Eighth is finished, and my artistic father must be the first to know about it…May it find grace!

Sadly, this monumental symphony did not find grace with the conductor.

Levi freely admitted to friends of the composer that he could make neither head nor tail of the new work, even suggesting that the symphony needed some sort of intervention in order to be suitable for performance, and that if that were not possible, the work should be discarded.

Levi’s rejection of the Eighth devastated Bruckner, sending him into a long depression. This provoked him not only to re-examine the Eighth, but to thoroughly scrutinize and overhaul his first five symphonies over a four-year period between 1887 and 1891. Throughout his career, the self-effacing Bruckner tended to value other’s opinions ahead of his own, leading to several of his works existing in multiple versions, often wildly different from each other, encompassing changes in structure, harmony and instrumentation. For the most part, Bruckner’s friends and students made well-meaning suggestions that were often an attempt to make his works conform to more conventional parameters. In the case of the Eighth, it exists in four different versions, from the original through the edition by Leopold Novak from 1955.

When the Eighth was finally given its first performance on December 18, 1892 in Vienna, with Hans Richter conducting the Vienna Philharmonic, it was given in a revised version from 1890 with changes largely suggested by Bruckner’s pupil Joseph Schalk. As with the premiere of the Seventh, the first performance of the Eighth was a complete triumph for the composer.

Composer Hugo Wolf, one of Bruckner’s most fervent supporters, was in attendance and later wrote to composer Emil Kauffmann about the successful premiere: The Symphony is the creation of a Titan, and in sheer vastness, fertility and grandeur even surpasses his other symphonies. Notwithstanding the usual Cassandra prophecies of woe, even from those in the know, its success was almost without precedent. It was an absolute victory of light over darkness, and the storm of delighted applause was like some elemental manifestation of nature. In short, even a Roman Emperor could not have wished for a more superb triumph.

Even one of Bruckner’s most vituperative critics, Eduard Hanslick, delivered a compliment (albeit backhanded) on the composer’s stunning accomplishment: A stormy ovation, waving of handkerchiefs from the standees, innumerable recalls, laurel wreaths. For Bruckner, the concert was certainly a triumph.

Whether Richter performed a similar favor for his audience is doubtful.

The program seems to have been presented only for the sake of a noisy minority.

The Eighth, like many Bruckner symphonies, bears some of the hallmarks of Beethoven’s Ninth, both in its melodic content and its structure. The first movement opens mysteriously, tremolo strings creating a hushed atmosphere against which the lower strings intone the first theme of the work. The overall pattern is that of a Classical sonata-allegro, but with the development permitted a very free form and fused with the recapitulation, much in the manner that the first movement of Beethoven’s “Eroica” 2021-2022 SEASON

features developmental passages in its coda. At the end, the movement rises to an impassioned climax, but the music uncharacteristically fades to a pianissimo ending.

As in Beethoven’s Ninth, the scherzo of the Eighth is placed as the second movement instead of the more traditional third. It is a heavy-footed dance, with its single melodic idea repeated relentlessly throughout the orchestra over a cushion of nervous tremolo strings. The contrasting Trio section, slower and more graceful than the surrounding scherzo, is the only instance of a harp in Bruckner’s symphonies. This momentary respite is dispelled by the return of the scherzo, which pounds to its ferocious conclusion.

The Adagio’s sublime textures create a sound world where time seems suspended and we are left to contemplate timeless beauty. Again taking Beethoven’s Ninth as a model, Bruckner contrasts two thematic groups, which are presented in varied forms at each appearance. The movement’s climax is akin to climbing a mountain. The music gradually builds and then recedes but eventually builds with greater intensity until the peroration is achieved.

The finale is filled with a wealth of melodic material, organized into three different groups, but the aural experience for the listener is largely an infinitely varied presentation of these contrasting materials. The close of the symphony is a triumphant summation of the whole work, with themes from all four movements appearing before the symphony ends in a blaze of triumphant brass.
