Fall Meeting and Social Cancelled

Due to the Corona virus pandemic, we have elected to cancel this year’s annual meeting and social that was originally scheduled for October 3 at Tommy Brann’s. We are certainly hoping to reschedule for next fall and in the meantime, the current officers will continue in their positions for one more year. We are going to try to hold a board meeting in January to make plans and review the status of our historical preservation projects. Officers will be notified.

126th Infantry Regiment Update

Since our last newsletter the deployment mission of the 3rd Battalion 126th Infantry has been modified. The battalion has been split more than once with missions in CONUS and Southwest Asia.

Since May 24, the battalion has deployed a company-size team under command of CPT Daniel Childs to provide support to U.S. Customs and Border Protection in El Paso, Ysleta, and Clint sectors to assist in securing the southern border. This involved manning eleven sites across 53 miles of the boarder. A second, platoon-size detachment operates out of Laredo, Texas. As of Sep 1, the team has been responsible for assisting in over 1,450 apprehensions of illegal border crossings and seizure of nearly 300 pounds of illegal narcotics. Soldiers on the mission maintain multiple roles unique to their designated MOS/AOC and complete additional training requirements along with their operational duties. The battalion’s original mission to Afghanistan was just getting underway when it was cancelled due to COVID-19 and other operational considerations. Its latest location as of Sep 2 is in Qatar, however, the battalion will be split one more time to conduct two separate missions; one in support of US NAVY CENTCOM Operations in Bahrain, and the other directly supporting joint, CENTCOM theater cooperation requirements in Jordan. While all of this is occurring, the battalion’s Rear Detachment has been working around the clock supporting COVID-19 response, Rapid Reaction Response Force support, and keeping the Battalion administratively straight while the other half is forward deployed. We could not have accomplished anything to date without the support we get from these great Americans "covering our six" at home.

NOTE: Owing to the fluidity of these missions, the situation may have changed by the time you are reading this newsletter.

126th Historical Archive Update

On July 29, we had the honor of traveling to Camp Grayling to unveil the bronze plaque honoring Colonel Merle Howe. Because of COVID-19, the Camp has been unable to erect the base in the Chapel Memorial Garden to permanently set the plaque. That will be accomplished in 2021 and a more formal dedication scheduled. Our archival work at the Grand Valley Armory has been on hold due to COVID-19. Our normal Wednesday morning work sessions were suspended back in March and it’s not clear when we will be able to resume working again. We are hoping to get back to work after the New Year, if not sooner. We have been working from home on what we will need to do to refurbish our 126th Infantry State of Michigan Historical Marker in front of the Grand Valley Armory. The process will involve taking the marker down, shipping it to a vendor for complete refurbishment, and re-installing it on new poles. In the meantime, we expect to organize a small crew to upgrade the landscaping around the marker’s site. The marker has been in place since 1994 and has taken a beating from the weather and neglect over the past 26 years. It needs to stand strong once again to ensure everyone who passes by takes pride in our rich history and tradition. Please, please do your part and consider a donation to our Legacy Fund. An envelope has been provided for your convenience. If you have questions, contact Bill Sobotka (address, phone and email is in this newsletter). Thank you in advance!
