Approaching the harbor, the city of Hydra looks like a painting of gray, white and blue colors over the blue of the sea, a model of architecture and aesthetics. The main feature of the island is that there are no cars or other wheeled vehicles, and the only mode of transport availabe is the local donkeys, which makes Hydra even more picturesque.

The mansions of Hydra On the eastern side of the harbor one can see the Lazaros Tsamados stone mansion, where the Naval Academy is housed today.
On the eastern side of Kseri Elia square, lies the stone mansion of Georgios Sahinis with the characteristic terracotta third floor.
South west, 500 meters from the waterfront, dominates the ocher coloured house of Lazaros Koundouriotis, which today functions as an annex of the National Historical Museum.
In the district of Kala Pigadia, there is the ocher coloured Gorogiannis mansion with a typical Macedonian-style living room.
On the west side of the city one can see the four-storey stone mansion of Emmanuel Tombazis, which belongs to the School of Fine Arts since 1936. Above it, are the houses of Sachtouris and Votsis. On its right on the waterfront, there is the stone mansion of Frangiskos Voulgaris (today Hotel Hydrea Hospitality), where the Concept Store MyHydra is hosted.
On the western side above a pine tree park, one can see the stone mansion of Georgios and Pavlos Koundouriotis. On the way to Kamini, there is also the Boudouris mansion, whose large estate is protected by a high white fence.

Following the coastal road, we arrive at Kamini, a small, natural, picturesque harbor full of fishing boats.
Next to Megalo Kamini is Mikro Kamini, a beautiful small pebble beach.

Andreas “Miaoulis” - Vokos was a Greek ship- owner, who played a leading role in the Greek Revolution of 1821. (The name Miaoulis comes from a ship called “Miaoul”, which means “small boat”). The remake of a naval battle in the port of Hydra with the burning of a “bourlotto” (trapped ship full of dynamite) followed by great fireworks make this captivating spectacle at night on the port an unforgettable event.

Born in Athens, Greece, she has presented her Artwork in more than 60 “one woman shows” in Greece, USA, Italy, China, UAE, Belgium, England, Spain and to major Art fairs around the world. Her works are exhibited in many Museums and private Collections internationally.

The space had been abandoned, but the hooks and hoists were still in place, as well as the pipe that drained blood into the sea. Every summer, a mid-career artist is invited to present a site-specific exhibition, ranging from projects that extend onto the island to installations contained within the tiny building, all with the participation of the Municipality of Hydra.

Over the years, DESTE’s project space has featured exhibitions by artists Maurizio Cattelan, Doug Aitken, Urs Fischer, Pawel Althamer, Paul Chan, Roberto Cuoghi, and Kara Walker.
