— Fats Waller Performed at the Irving Place Theatre, 1937 The Nance opened on Broadway on April 15, 2013, as a limited engagement. Its run was extended, and the show was eventually taped by PBS for its “Live From Lincoln Center” series and broadcast in October 2014. I cannot tell you how proud I am of LTA for jumping at the opportunity to be the first D.C.-area theater to produce this important show.

Using the waning days of vaudeville and burlesque as his lenses, playwright Douglas Carter Beane brings into focus how marginalizing members of society for political gain is not new in politics. Yes, Virginia, “pansy acts” were all the rage in this country in the early decades of the 20th century, and yes, Virginia, politicians used wedge issues even then to divide the population and win an election.

Show Synopsis It is 1930s New York, a time when it was easy to “play gay” but dangerous to be gay. A headliner called “The Nance” was usually played by a straight man who portrays a campy homosexual in musical vaudeville parodies. However, in this play, Chauncey Miles not only plays a gay man but is a homosexual himself. The Nance will take you into the wild world of burlesque and tell the backstage story of Chauncey and his fellow performers. Winner of three Tony Awards.

Meet the Cast (in alphabetical order) Danielle Comer (Joan) is thrilled to be back onstage at LTA as Joan in The Nance. She has previously played roles such as McKenzie in A Party to Murder (LTA), the Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Emily Webb in Our Town. She has a bachelor’s degree in theater and English from James Madison University and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in arts management at George Mason University. In addition to performing, she loves to be a nerd and play D&D (Dungeons & Dragons) with her friends. She would like to thank her fellow cast members and the crew for making this such an incredibly fun experience, and her mom and boyfriend for being so loving and supportive. Lastly, she would like to dedicate her performance to her father (even if she is playing a stripper; sorry, Dad!), whom she misses dearly but who is ever in her heart.

Chuck Dluhy (Chauncey Miles) ecstatically returns to LTA, where he was last seen in God of Carnage (Michael Novak). John Paul Odle (Ned) is a native Alexandrian with a major in theater, dance and film from Providence College. This is his second performance at LTA; earlier this season, he was seen as Spike in Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. Previously he was directed

by Paata Tsikurishvili, the founder of Synetic Theatre in Crystal City, in The Annunciation. He also received a Gilbie Award for Best Supporting Actor at Catholic University for his role in the original play Us Righteous.

Janice Rivera (Carmen/Dance Captain) is thrilled to have a second time at LTA to fly her Bandera Latina. She was last onstage here as Camila in In the Heights. Previous roles: Aldonza in Man of La Mancha at MCP and Lucille in Parade and Judas Iscariot in Jesus Christ Superstar (both WATCH nominations) at SMP. Other roles include Cathy in The Last Five Years (SCT) and Mrs. Walker in The Who’s Tommy and Ethel in Footloose (LTA). She has also been the sound designer for several LTA shows, including Spamalot and Cantorial (WATCH nominations) and The Fabulous Lipitones. Janice is a freelance video editor under the shingle of Offbook Productions. Meet the Crew (in alphabetical order) Kirstin Apker (Properties Design) has filled numerous technical roles at LTA, including props designer (Legally Blonde, Key for Two, Laughing Stock), set decorator (Legally Blonde, Steel Magnolias—WATCH Award), assistant stage manager (A Party to Murder, Plaza Suite, Sweeney Todd) and artistic painter (Heaven Can Wait). She has also appeared onstage in To Kill a Mockingbird, and she serves as a house manager and as the coordinator of the theater’s Floodlight newsletter. Kirstin is excited to work on this D.C.-area premiere with old and new friends! Love always to Tom and her beautiful boys for their support of Mommy’s avocation.

David Correia (Co-Sound Design) is back after a brief hiatus doing sound design at LTA and just finished his18th musical, Anne of Green Gables. Earlier in the year, David did the sound design for Hamlet (PCP), The Boys Next Door (PCP), The Judicial Murder of Mrs. Surratt (ACCT), last year’s A Party to Murder (LTA) and The Lion in Winter (TAP). Previous notable LTA productions include Hairspray (2011 WATCH Award for Sound Design in a Musical), Spamalot (2014 Watch Nomination for Sound Design in a Musical) and Proof (2014 WATCH Nomination for Sound Design in a Play).

Ken and Patti Crowley (Lighting Design) are excited to be working with Frank, Chris, Stefan and Mary Beth once again at LTA. Their most recent designs include LTA’s Harvey, The Audience, The History Boys, In the Heights and 33 Variations; RCP’s Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Peter and the Starcatcher, Aida and Gypsy; PWLT’s Cabaret, The 39 Steps and Jesus Christ Superstar; DS’s The Boys in The Band; TAP’s She Loves Me and Deathtrap; and PCP’s Black Hole. Other noteworthy designs include Curtains, Picnic, The Secret Garden, The Will Rogers Follies, Widdershins, Into the Woods, Blithe Spirit, Das Barbecü, The Teahouse of the August Moon and I Hate Hamlet. They are the recipients of numerous awards, including LTA, RCP, FCT and WATCH Awards for their lighting designs. They want to dedicate their design to the production team, their fellow designers and the cast and crew.

Sarah Gale (Wardobe) is excited to be tackling another show full of quick changes after fully recovering from wardrobe duties for Legally Blonde last summer. She has been involved with other LTA shows both onstage (The Full Monty, Ragtime) and in the wings (Spamalot, Grey Gardens). Thanks to the awesome crew and love to Calvin and Michael.

Meet the Crew (in alphabetical order) David Hale (Co-Sound Design) has won many LTA, ACT and WATCH Awards for outstanding production and sound designs. David has designed the LTA productions of Chicago, Greater Tuna and A Christmas Tuna, along with The History Boys and over 30 other LTA plays and musical productions. His awardwinning sound designs include Master Class, Das Barbecü, The Teahouse of the August Moon and Hot L Baltimore, among many others. David serves as LTA Treasurer and Building Governor and has been an LTA member since 1974.

Heather Hicks (Hair and Makeup) is a recent graduate of George Mason University with a B.A. in theater performance and directing and a minor in English. During her tenure at GMU, she worked with the Mason Players as director of The Laramie Project, played Hucklebee in The Fantasticks and worked as makeup and hair coordinator of The Threepenny Opera. She recently made her debut with LTA as the hair and wig designer for Legally Blonde and as the hair and makeup designer for A Christmas Carol. Heather is also a teaching artist with Acting for Young People.

Becca Heisner (Co-Stage Manager) is thrilled to join the crew of The Nance in putting such an amazing show together. She is excited to work at LTA again, having worked as an assistant stage manager for Legally Blonde last summer. Most recently she stage managed Hamlet at Port City Playhouse and Difficult Conversations: A Night of One-Act Plays in the New Voices Series at LTA. Sarah Holt (Wardrobe) is delighted to be back on the LTA stage, where she's appeared in productions of 33 Variations, Pack of Lies, Lettice and Lovage, The Philadelphia Story, All the King's Men, Godspell, and many others. She counts Folger, Keegan, NextStop, Doorway Arts, Source Festival, and Rorschach among her additional regional credits. An LTA faculty member since 2001, teaching improv and acting, she's also a member of LTA's house improv troupe, The Retrocessionists, and, because she can't get enough, designs and conducts improv workshops for organizations and groups of all sizes.

Sandy Kozel (Set Painter) has appeared onstage and painted sets for various theaters, including LTA. She most recently headed the paint crew for this season’s Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. She has performed at LTA in The Music Man and Victor/Victoria.

Micheal J. O’Connor (Master Electrician) works as master electrician at many local community theaters. He enjoys working with Ken and Patti Crowley along with the very talented tech crew at LTA. He can often be found backstage or in the tech booth, always in the dark.

Tom O’Reilly (Set Construction) is glad to be back at LTA after having been nominated for a WATCH award for Driving Miss Daisy last year. He has kept busy building Pippin and Sweeney Todd for TAP and plans to stick around for Jesus Christ Superstar this summer.

Matthew Popkin (Conductor) is thrilled to return for his second LTA production after playing keyboard for Legally Blonde last summer. Recent credits include music directing and piano accompaniment for Footloose and 13: The Musical (MCP), Into the Woods (Wildwood Summer Theater) and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, The Last Five Years, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, and his original work Backstage: The Musical (University of Maryland, College Park). Matthew is grateful for the support of Eleonora, Pippin and Phoebe over the course of the many late nights of the show.

Dan Remmers (Set Design) has known Frank Shutts for 20 years and was surprised to realize that this is the first time he has been on Frank’s design team. Dan’s previous set designs include Legally Blonde at LTA, The Lion in Winter at TAP and West Side Story at LTA. Thanks to Margie and Lyn and John.

Jean Schlichting and Kit Sibley (Co-Costume Design) are excited to help re-create the world of 1930s vaudeville and burlesque for this production. Other recent LTA shows include Anne of Green Gables, Harvey, Legally Blonde, Anything Goes, To Kill a Mockingbird, West Side Story and In the Heights. It has been a pleasure as always to work with Frank, Chris, Stefan, Mary Beth and the rest of this very talented cast and crew.

Frank D. Shutts II (Director), a native Northern Virginian, has been involved with LTA for 35 years. He made his directorial debut with The Fantasticks in 1989 and has directed 22 main-stage productions here since. A member of the Educational Theater Association, Frank has served as guest director for McLean High School, the Madeira School and most recently Bishop Ireton. He is serving his second year as the stage director for the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington. His work has been recognized by the City of Alexandria and by many awards preceded by the superlative “best.” He thanks Chris, Stefan and Mary Beth for their collaboration; the cast and crew for their talent and commitment; and Myke for his love and support. He dedicates this show to the memories of Dorothy R. Kogelman and Grace Manly Machanic, who nurtured and refined his theater addiction since 1977 and 1986, respectively.

Marg Soroos (Co-Stage Manager) has been active in community theater for many years. She has kept herself busy stage managing productions for LTA and ACCT as well as being master electrician at both theaters. LTA productions include Shenandoah, Das Barbeqü, The Who’s Tommy, Footloose, Gross Indecency, Plaid Tidings, Oliver!, [title of show], The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, The Full Monty, Ragtime, In the Heights, The History Boys and Legally Blonde. She is President of ACCT. Marg is now retired from her day job and has taken up traveling when not at the theater.

Meet the Crew (continued) Myke Taister (Set Decoration), also known by the mononym “MYKE,” is a retired forensic artist who fell into set decoration and design as a hobby some 30 years ago. He served as LTA’s president in the late ’90s and currently heads the theater’s Building Committee. Myke has won several awards for his theatrical endeavors, and his next project is decorating a Victorian home on Main Street in his hometown of Midland, Michigan. He dedicates this show to his mentors and friends, Anne Lash and Jean Stuhl.

Christopher A. Tomasino (Music Director) returns to LTA after music directing the 2017 summer production of Legally Blonde. He is very excited to be working once again with Frank and Stefan, our producer Mary Beth, our stage managers Marg and Becca, and a highly talented cast, crew and band. The Nance is the 31st production that Chris has music directed at LTA since he started in the fall of 1988 with Chicago. Chris has been honored to receive the WATCH Award for Music Direction on the LTA productions of In the Heights, Hairspray, Cabaret, Das Barbecü and Tommy. He has also been the recipient of the LTA Demaine Award for Music Direction on numerous productions, as well as ACT Awards for Music Direction. Chris is excited to return for LTA’s production of Jesus Christ Superstar.

In addition to LTA, Chris has been the music director for Bishop Ireton High School’s theater arts program for the past 30 years.

Russell Wyland (Rigging) is delighted to be rigging his first show at LTA … since Harvey and The Audience. While some believe Russ spends all of his free time at LTA, he is also an active enthusiast of opera and hockey and a scholar of 19thcentury British literature. Russell is the President of LTA, recently co-produced The Audience and is hosting the opening night party for The Nance.

Welcome to the “Shakespeare Garden” in The Little Theatre of Alexandria Courtyard! This beautiful garden was made possible with donations from LTA members and supporters who purchased bricks during the LTA Council’s fund-raising campaign February-April of 2017. We have planted floral species that figured prominently in the Bard’s writings. We invite you to check out our courtyard during intermission and see how many you can identify!

The Council of The Little Theatre of Alexandria, organized in 1961, is a dedicated group of about 80 members that supports the theatre with special contributions. While our “Shakespeare Garden” is our most massive accomplishment so far, our past contributions included: scholarships for high school students, a new range, draperies and ice maker for the Council Green Room, folding chairs and tables throughout the theatre, brass plates for sponsored theatre seats, a computerized box office system, several grand drapes over the years, and many varied technical enhancements, including exterior defibrillators (AEDs) for safety. Contributions to LTA from the Council have exceeded $215,000. The Council conducts three business/social meetings per year, and decorates the theatre for the winter holidays. We are pleased to be a part of the Alexandria artistic community and proud to support one of the best community theatres in America today!
