2019-2020 ANNUAL REPORT
Greetings!
When I think about the 2019-2020 Sorority year, I think about everything going on in the world and how it impacts our members and our communities. I think about COVID-19, social distancing and the sense of isolation we have all experienced while trying to navigate a new virtual reality. I think about Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade and countless other Black lives that have been taken mercilessly with no accountability or justice being served. I think about the people in this country that are currently in detention centers or living in unacceptable conditions and separated from their families. I think about the Trans community and how up until recently, there was no safety from discrimination at work, and still not feeling safe in this society. I think about Vanessa Guillen and our members who are survivors of sexual violence, along with the historical silence around how much trauma it causes and how much courage it takes to speak out. These experiences are rooted in a deep history of systemic injustice and take a toll on our members every day. In recent months, the impact has been intensified as there has been so much loss and injustice being experienced simultaneously on many different levels. In these times of immense crisis, it is up to each of us to take care of ourselves and take ownership of making LTA a safe place for one another and our communities. Throughout all of this, I see our members’ resilience, and how we persevere and overcome during the most challenging of times. I am proud of our members for being a voice, taking action, and advocating for justice for Black lives, Trans rights, immigration reform and survivors of sexual assault. I am proud of us for taking action and raising money for Black Lives Matter initiatives and COVID-19 relief in partnership with the LTA Foundation. I am proud of our members for finding creative virtual ways to connect and celebrate graduations, accomplishments and our new spring 2020 members. I am proud of our Leaders for doing their best to fulfill their responsibilities and meet membership needs, while managing the stress from the personal and professional impacts of the current state of crisis. I believe in The sisterhood of Lambda Theta Alpha and I know that together we can continue to cultivate a safe place for one another and continue to improve how LTA advocates for social justice issues that impact our members and communities every day. We must stand together in unity to impact change within LTA and in our communities. If it doesn’t look like Unity, Love and Respect, it is not LTA. Let’s all do our part to uphold our purpose and principles so that every single member feels a sense of Unity, Love and Respect within our sisterhood, especially when the world does not always provide that for us elsewhere. With Unity, Love, and Respect,
Elisa A. Oliver 2018-2020 National President

This past year serving as a National Advisor to the Board of Directors has been a journey of unexpected challenges. As a Founding Mother, I always refer fondly to our sisterhood as a work in progress; we are still growing, nurturing our principles, and looking forward to the future. We faced and are still facing a health crisis; life and death reality in our Black communities and political uncertainties. Yes, these issues have shaken and continue to impact all of us, our Lambda Theta Alpha sisterhood and family. I have so much faith in you my sisters; Unity, Love, and Respect created us 45 years ago and that is the catalyst of our sisterhood. With Unity, Love, and Respect,

TAKING A STANCE ON SOCIAL JUSTICE In light of severe racial injustice issues resulting in several deaths in the Black community, LTA members requested that the organization begin to take a more robust public stance on social justice issues, specifically related to advocating for the Black community. The Board of Directors organized a national open forum for members to collaborate on strengthening the organizations voice and stance on social justice issues impacting our communities. Our Founding Mothers have always emphasized the importance of social action. In honor of our activist roots, LTA has been more vocal and has begun taking a stronger stance on our public platforms and internal communications and initiatives.
Some examples include: » Supporting the NAACP #WeAreDoneDying Campaign » Partnering with the LTA Foundation for their Direct Action Grants and the 1.975 Run in efforts to support the Black Lives Matter Movement » Creating a resource page for members to support social justice advocacy initiatives » Advocating for justice on our social media accounts and raising awareness of ways our members can take action » Approving a Cultural Competency Task Force to eliminate barriers resulting from anti-Blackness by providing education, outreach, advocacy and member support » Hosting a Juneteenth Celebration, providing education and supporting Black-owned businesses

Sorority members with scheduled meetings with 35 congressional offices were able to meet with most of their congressional representatives offices, however, as we approached the end of the week, several offices cancelled due to the first cases of COVID-19 being documented in the District. In preparation for Lambda Hill Days, participating sisters have attended training on best practice for meetings and on current/pending immigration policies. They have also been tasked with calling and scheduling meetings with their elected officials on the Hill. This year’s cohort will also receive a live in-depth training before meeting with elected officials. With this annual event, we hope to serve as a voice for the Latino community and demonstrate the immense power that lies within our sorority.

We are incredibly thankful for your involvement and the promotion of our mission. A testament to our strong partnership was how LTA showed up for us in 2020. In the height of COVID-19, instead of shying away from the uncertainty the pandemic created, LTA jumped into action and donated over $10,000 towards our Relief Grants. These funds have and continue to be a source of safety, comfort, and relief for those vulnerable to the consequences of COVID, and we are grateful for your dedication and commitment to uplifting communities.
