2016 ANNUAL REPORT

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR The past year has seen a variety of exciting developments for the LSU Museum of Art that position us for a successful future. I first want to thank Kristin Sosnowsky who took the museum through its first six months of the fiscal year and to thank all our staff for their hard work. Kristin’s steady hand helped to advance the museum and readied it for my arrival. I am excited and honored to become the new Executive Director for LSU Museum of Art. Our supporters, staff, museum boards and community from throughout greater Baton Rouge have graciously greeted my family and me. These are exciting times to take on this important leadership role.

The most significant undertaking of the past year was the reinstallation of the permanent collection, providing 10,000 square feet to display objects spanning the 1700s to present day. In the first three months, nearly 12,000 people were exposed to the history and culture of Louisiana through art. Importantly, 93% of those people said they have learned something valuable and new.

With the diverse slate of exhibitions—ranging from topics such as the nature of war and violence; the artistic relationship between Louisiana and Mexico; an insight into vibrant Haitian culture through its art; and the opening of an exhibition celebrating a vibrant brand of Louisiana style “Antebellum Pop!”—attendees have had the opportunity to share and celebrate new ideas and dialogue through art. Overall, the museum has seen a 40% increase in attendance, serving more than 21,000 community members.

While we have seen measurable success within the walls of the museum, our impact in the community also continues to be significant. Through educational initiatives like the Neighborhood Arts Project, ArtWorks and Line4Line, LSU MOA is engaging young citizens in their own backyards while teaching valuable skills like critical thinking and collaboration through art. This year, NAP alone served over 5,200 children in our community. This positive impact will be felt over generations, as we continue to commit to these in-depth programs of creative and educational engagement.

Of course, none of these exhibitions and programs would be possible without the generous philanthropists in the community. Our annual success is contingent on private support from donors and members like you, making this organization truly your museum. Please continue to engage and find inspiration in what LSU MOA has to offer as we play our role as a valued cultural and intellectual resource to the city of Baton Rouge, our state and our region.

FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD What an exciting year this has been!

I have enjoyed working with our new Executive Director, Daniel Stetson, who took over from Interim Director Kristin Sosnowsky in January. Daniel has a lot of experience in arts administration and a strong passion for what he does.

We began the 2015-2016 year celebrating the 10th anniversary of the LSU Museum of Art’s residency in the Shaw Center. This marvelous venue has given the museum the opportunity to be front and center in the arts community in Baton Rouge.

September 2015 saw the opening of Toulouse Lautrec and La Vie Moderne: Paris 1880-1910. This groundbreaking exhibition celebrated Toulouse Lautrec’s work along with other major avant-garde artists at the center of Parisian culture. In December, we were then transported to the world of Haitian art with The Carnival, the City, and the Sea: Haitian Art from the Perry Smith Collection.

Perhaps the biggest accomplishment this year was the reinstallation of the permanent collection in March 2016.

We now have 10,000 square feet dedicated to our fabulous collection of Louisiana art, silver, pottery, jade, sculpture and furniture. I would like to thank our guest curators Charles Cage, Sarah Clunis, Sally Main and William Rudolph for their help in this endeavor.

Hunt Slonem: Antebellum Pop opened in April 2016 to a jam-packed reception. Prior to the reception, Hunt gave a lecture on the third floor that was standing room only. Hunt’s stunning work teamed together with beautiful antiques from M.S. Rau Antiques created a truly immersive experience.

I would like to thank the members of the Advisory Board for their service to the museum. I am fortunate to serve with these members of our community who bring their individual talents, dedication and enthusiasm to help make this museum a better place.

Of course, the museum couldn’t function without our fine museum staff. These are the people who make it happen each and every day and, with Daniel’s leadership, the future indeed looks bright. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new curator Courtney Taylor, as well our new preparator Brian Morfitt and new communications coordinator Brandi Simmons.

HUNT SLONEM: ANTEBELLUM POP! April 22–August 7, 2016

This exhibition, the first major museum exhibition to display Slonem’s Pop art-inspired canvases alongside his signature “Antebellum Pop” plantation style, explores New Yorkand Louisiana-based painter Hunt Slonem’s strong ties to Louisiana art and culture, and to the larger history of the American South. The exhibition features a selection of the artist’s work from the 1980s to the present, placed among magnificent antiques, elaborate wallpapers, sumptuous paint colors, and exotic textiles, all adorned with mystical images from Slonem’s intense imagination.

Exhibitions like The Carnival, The City and The Sea: Haitian Art from the Perry Smith Collection of the New Orleans Museum of Art explore Louisiana in a global context looking at the cultures that influence the unique culture of Louisiana.

EXHIBITIONS

THE CARNIVAL, THE CITY AND THE SEA: HAITIAN ART FROM THE PERRY SMITH COLLECTION OF THE NEW ORLEANS MUSEUM OF ART December 11–March 20, 2016

Informed by traditions of Carnival and Vodun, this exhibition looked a three rhythms of Haitian life evident in the the rhythmic, syncopated imagery of Haitian art. Rara, as part of the Haitian Carnival is an annual festival that takes place over the Catholic Lent Season with many parades during the Easter week. The bustling cities of Haiti provide the inspiration for the part of the exhibition entitled “The City,” which has become a place of commerce, a site for performance, and a virtual crossroads of class, culture, and Haitian hybridity. The last section of the exhibition is entitled “The Sea” and features works that look at the whimsical and intrinsic spiritual culture of Vodun in Haiti.

TOULOUSE-LAUTREC AND LA VIE MODERN: PARIS, 1880–1910 September 5–November 15, 2015

This exhibition featured the art of famed French painter, printmaker, and illustrator Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec alongside that of other vanguard 19th century French artists who helped shape a fresh vision of art and life in the City of Light. The exhibition celebrated art as a force at the center of urban renewal and social change. It showcased how the art of vanguard French artists like Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec animated and inspired the people of Paris, and caused them to think in new ways about art’s role in their lives and their city.

MEXICO IN NEW ORLEANS: A TALE OF TWO AMERICAS May 5–September 6, 2015

This was the first major museum exhibition to explore the captivating artistic exchange between Louisiana and Mexico from the 1920s through the 1950s.

SHAKING UP PROHIBITION IN NEW ORLEANS: THE COCKTAIL DRAWINGS OF OLIVE LEONHARDT May 5–August 30, 2015

At the height of Prohibition in New Orleans, Olive Leonhardt and Hilda Phelps Hammond published a tongue-in-cheek cocktail guide presented in the form of a classic A to Z alphabet book. This exhibition featured all twenty-six of Leonhardt’s original pen-and-ink drawings for the book.

DEBBIE FLEMING CAFFERY: BATON ROUGE AFTER THE STORM

June 5–August 30, 2015

This exhibition commemorated the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina with Debbie Caffery’s powerful photography of evacuees from New Orleans in the Baton Rouge River Center.

MARGARET EVANGELINE: ON WAR

March 13–August 2, 2015

This retrospective exhibition of work by Baton Rouge native Margaret Evangeline examined the nature of war and violence through the artist’s provocative paintings, mixed media and installation works. Her art is often itself made using the tools of war: her paintings and installations are produced through gunshots and punctured by bullet holes so that they embody the very violence she seeks to critique.

REINSTALLATION ART IN LOUISIANA: VIEWS INTO THE COLLECTION In the spring of 2016, the LSU Museum of Art unveiled the reinstallation of its permanent collection. The museum has devoted over 10,000 square feet to the finest examples of its collection of Louisiana fine and decorative arts from the 1700s to the present. Many works that have not been on display in over a decade are showcased in the reinstallation. A new education space provides children and families a place to explore the ideas presented in the galleries.

Five guest curators offer five views into the strengths of the museum’s collections. Together, these windows into the collection provide an overview of Art in Louisiana, as the reinstallation’s title suggests. Claudia Kheel provides an introduction to the history, culture, and art of Louisiana with examples of paintings and furniture from the 18th century to the present day. Charles C. Cage, in-house specialist on Silver and Books, Documents & Manuscripts at New Orleans Auction Galleries, brings life to the Museum’s collection of silver made in New Orleans and beyond. William Keyse Rudolph, Andrew W. Mellon Chief Curator and The Marie and Hugh Halff Curator of American Art at the San Antonio Museum of Art, places 19th- and 20th-century Louisiana landscapes and 17th- through 19th-century European and American portraiture in a global context. Sally Main, curator emerita of the Newcomb Art Gallery, tells the story of arts and crafts at Newcomb College and Newcomb Pottery’s place in the national and international Arts and Crafts movement. Sarah Anita Clunis, Assistant Professor of Art History Arts of Africa and the African Diaspora at Xavier University, connects art by LSU faculty and modern and contemporary Louisiana artists with the major artistic movements of the 20th and 21st centuries.

PROGRAMS

ARTWORKS ArtWorks is an innovative museum/school-based arts program providing students and teachers a free, creative, integrated arts initiative at the LSU Museum of Art. In its third year, ArtWorks partnered with three schools—White Hills Elementary, Bernard Terrace Elementary and Park Elementary—serving over 200 students each month throughout the year.

The program differs from a field trip as it is based on a multi-visit, yearlong model, which tracks students’ learning, social and emotional progress as they move up through elementary school. Each visit throughout the school year is designed around themes related to art concepts or exhibitions on view at LSU MOA. The museum environment supports new ways of teaching visual, verbal, and literacy skills; encourages positive risk-taking through creative expression; supports a variety of different learning styles and abilities; hones essential critical thinking practices; and fosters the joy of learning through art.

This year’s Neighborhood Arts Project expanded into five neighborhoods across six sites, reaching a total of 5,214 children in East Baton Rouge Parish.

PROGRAMS ARTS IN ALZHEIMER’S

In collaboration with Alzheimer’s Services of the Capital Area, a trained museum guide faciliates enjoyable gallery experiences designed to promote conversation and engagement with works of art and each other.

FIRST FREE SUNDAYS

Along with other downtown museums, the LSU Museum of Art offers free admission on the first Sunday of every month.

LINE 4 LINE

Taking place the first Monday of each month at O’Neil’s Barber & Beauty Shop, O’Neil Curtis and his team of barbers donate their time to provide free haircuts for boys ages 3-11 in exchange for reading a book. The museum education team—along with teen art mentors—assist the young readers, teach a hands-on activity and help children pick books to take home. The museum has now established two mini libraries within the community.

MUSE

This monthly art enrichment program for home schoolers ages 6-12 focuses on a different area of the museum’s collections and special exhibitions.

NEIGHBORHOOD ARTS PROJECT

Now in its fourth year, the Neighborhood Arts Project is a free art outreach program for under-resourced areas with a high density of children, youth and families, who do not attend summer camps or participate in afterschool or weekend programs.

Preschool age children, along with their parent or caregiver, build a love for reading and art through this monthly hands-on program.

ABOUT

Founded in 1959, the LSU Museum of Art opened its doors to the public in 1962 as a small period room museum in the Memorial Tower. In 2005, it moved to the Shaw Center for the Arts, where it has more than 15,000 square feet of immense exhibition space. As the only dedicated art museum in the city of Baton Rouge, the LSU Museum of Art serves more than 21,000 adults and children who visit the museum’s galleries annually.

In addition to holding one of the largest university-affiliated art collections in the South, the museum presents world-class touring exhibitions of regional, American, and European painting, sculpture, decorative arts, works on paper, and photography. The collection consists of more than 6,500 objects, ranging from a world-class collection of Chinese jade to one of the most comprehensive public collections of Louisiana art.

The LSU Museum of Art serves as a vital cultural and educational resource for the greater Baton Rouge community. As part of its mission, the museum supports ambitious art outreach initiatives ranging from collaborative projects with local artists and LSU faculty and students to thriving primary and secondary school art programs. Through its exhibitions and programming, the museum aims to showcase and support the work of local Louisiana artists as well as present projects of great regional and national importance that place the art and artists of Louisiana in dialogue with the wider world. The museum’s education and outreach programs strive to reach broad segments of the local population as well as target underserved neighborhoods. The education department’s philosophy holds that the heart of the museum experience is object-based learning.
