EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR It has been an exhilarating few months at the LSU Museum of Art, and I am thrilled to share the milestones that are shaping our vibrant future. First, I want to celebrate the tremendous success of our inaugural Southern Palette: Food & Drink Experience. Nearly 1,000 guests joined us to toast the artistry of 30 award-winning chefs and mixologists. Thanks to the incredible work of the Friends of LSUMOA and our generous sponsors, this "building year" exceeded expectations, raising over $30,000 in net proceeds. These funds provide a vital foundation for our programs, and we are already looking toward an even bigger impact on March 20, 2027.

Our commitment to expanding artistic horizons continues this summer with the premiere of the Folk Art Gallery. This space highlights the powerful work of self-taught and visionary artists. We are especially honored to feature six paintings on loan from the American Folk Art Museum in New York. This was made possible through the Art Bridges Partner Loan Network, an initiative founded by Alice Walton to ensure great American art is accessible to all. Beyond the canvas, this partnership brings a robust educational plan designed to deepen our community’s connection to these unique stories.

Two years ago, during a joint meeting of our Advisory and Friends Board members, we identified LSU students and high school youth as a key “hero” audience—an investment that continues to grow.

We recently hosted an exclusive evening celebrating our student employee educators, led by Curator of Education Dr. Callie Smith.

As they shared how the museum has shaped their experiences— and how they are now inspiring the next generation—it was a powerful reminder of why our mission matters.

We are honored to have received a selection of artworks from the estate of philanthropist and arts patron, Cary Saurage. While his passing in November 2025 was a profound loss to both LSUMOA and the community, we are grateful to have received several exceptional works. This gift represents a lasting reflection of Cary’s vision, generosity, and love of the arts, ensuring his memory remains an enduring part of the museum.

2025 SOUTHERN PRIZE & STATE FELLOWSHIPS FOR VISUAL ARTS On view June 4– September 6, 2026

Enjoy a selection of contemporary artwork by recipients of the 2025 Southern Prize & State Fellowships for Visual Arts, an initiative launched by South Arts in 2017 to celebrate and support exemplary artists across a nine-state region. Represented artists and Fellows include: Loretta Pettway Bennett (Alabama), Gonzalo Fuenmayor (Florida), Masela Nkolo (Georgia), Travis Townsend (Kentucky), Edgar Cano (Louisiana), Stephen Phillips (Mississippi), Lydia C. Thompson (North Carolina), Felicia Greenlee (South Carolina), and Tabitha Arnold (Tennessee).

This exhibit is supported by the Maxwell/Hanrahan Foundation, the Windgate Foundation, Southern First Bank, The Warner Fund, and many generous donors.

Working in ceramics, textiles, painting, and sculpture, the 2025 cohort presents a dynamic synthesis of past and present. Drawing upon ancestral craft traditions, from quilting and mask-making to biblical and folkloric imagery, the artists recast inherited forms through contemporary conversations around migration, labor, and identity. Rooted in material mastery yet resistant to nostalgia, their work extends Southern artistic legacies into compositions that feel at once grounded, speculative, and urgently of the moment.

South Arts is a nonprofit regional arts organization that advances creativity and innovation across the American South by supporting artists, organizations, and communities. REVISION

WOMEN IN PHOTOGRAPHY

ON VIEW JUNE 11–AUGUST 30, 2026 This exhibition presents powerful images addressing themes of social justice, aging, feminism, relationships, and feminine aesthetics. Representing diverse backgrounds and lived experiences, the artists offer perspectives rooted in the viewpoints of women. Drawn from the permanent collections of LSUMOA and the Paul R. Jones Museum in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the works illuminate the intersections of personal and collective histories, demonstrating photography’s power as both a tool of empowerment and a means of reimagining shared narratives.

Amalia Amaki’s collage-based practice engages the art and history of the African diaspora through layered compositions that combine photography with everyday materials. Drawing on vintage imagery and recycled objects, her work reclaims and recontextualizes representations of Black life, highlighting moments of intimacy and community while confronting the politics of race, memory, and visual culture.

FOLK ART GALLERY On view June 2026– July 2027

This summer, the LSUMOA premieres the Folk Art Gallery, our first concentrated gallery featuring work by self-taught and visionary artists. The cornerstone of the showcase is six paintings by Jimmy Lee Sudduth, Mose Tolliver, David Butler, Sam Doyle, Purvis Young, and Mary T. Smith, generously lent by the American Folk Art Museum, New York, as part of the Art Bridges Partner Loan Network (PLN). Established in 2017 by philanthropist Alice Walton, Art Bridges is a nonprofit foundation dedicated to expanding access to American art. The PLN supports museums in lending and borrowing works from one another’s collections, activating objects that might otherwise remain in storage and increasing public access across diverse communities.

Also included in the showcase are several works by artist, activist, and minister, Dr. Charles Smith (b. 1940) of Hammond, Louisiana, drawn from a recent transfer of fifteen sculptures from the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art, Inc., in Biloxi, Mississippi.

Originally part of a gift from the Kohler Foundation, Inc. to the Hilliard Art Museum in Lafayette, the LSUMOA is delighted to bring the objects back home to Louisiana.

Rounding out the gallery are artworks on long-term loan from entrepreneur and collector Doug McCraw of Birmingham, Alabama, including a monumental painting by Purvis Young (Florida, 1943–2010) and a metal sculpture by Richard Dial (Alabama, b. 1955), ceramic face jugs from the collection of Becky and Wyatt Collins of New Iberia, paintings by Clementine Hunter (Louisiana, c. 1887–1988) drawn from the Museum’s extensive permanent collection, and a large drawing by Thornton Dial (Alabama, 1928–2016), recently donated by Winifred and Kevin P. Reilly.

EDUCATION

SOCIAL CONNECTION & WELLBEING According to the CDC, about one in three U.S. adults feel lonely, and one in four lack social and emotional support. Among college students, a core audience that we serve as part of the university, 44% reported symptoms of depression, and 15% reported seriously considering suicide in the past year. Research shows arts engagement can meaningfully reduce depression and loneliness, and museums across the country are responding.

With support from the Art Bridges Foundation, the LSU Museum of Art is expanding its Art Break programs at the museum and through outreach.

What began as targeted outreach to high-stress programs at LSU Law and the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine is now expanding to reach the wider student body and surrounding community. In partnership with the Arts in Medicine Program at Baton Rouge General and campus partners, we will offer expanded monthly artmaking programs designed to build social connection for people of all ages.

The Folk Art exhibition at the heart of these programs speaks directly to that mission. Made possible through a loan from the American Folk Art Museum via the Art Bridges Partner Loan Network, a program connecting museums nationwide, the works were selected for how directly they speak to something universal: the human drive to create. The self-taught artists on view are a reminder that creativity belongs to everyone, and that art has always been one of the ways we find and sustain connection. See page 15 for upcoming Art Break programs.

Audiences are invited to experience the luminous and deeply personal world of Walter Inglis Anderson (1903–1965) in an exhibition that brings together over forty original works drawn from the permanent collection of the Walter Anderson Museum of Art in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, and the artist’s family. This intimate view into a creative life shaped by nature, solitude, and an unyielding devotion to artistic expression, features jewel-toned watercolors alongside lyrical pen-and-ink illustrations. Deft pencil sketches reveal Anderson’s masterful understanding of form and line, while glowing examples of hand-decorated ceramics underscore his versatility and ingenuity. Together, the objects demonstrate the breadth of an artist who moved fluidly between media, capturing the vitality of the Gulf Coast with uncommon sensitivity and energy.

Born in 1903 in New Orleans, Louisiana, Anderson came of age during a period of rapid modernization across the American South. As industrialization reshaped the mainland, he increasingly sought refuge in the solitude of the natural world, particularly the barrier islands beyond the Mississippi Sound. His subject matter ranges widely—from the Indigenous inhabitants of the Gulf Coast to the endangered birds and animals that once freely roamed its shorelines. He is perhaps best known for his intimate watercolors of Horn Island, a remote barrier island twelve miles off the coast of Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Rowing alone in a small

skiff, Anderson spent days observing and recording the island’s flora and fauna, often working on simple 8.5 x 11-inch sheets of typing paper.

These modest materials belie in the power of the resulting images, which capture both the majesty and the fierce unpredictability of the natural world.

Anderson’s artworks and writings serve as meditations on perception and presence. His reflections illuminate the philosophical core of the artist’s practice: a belief that careful attention to nature offers transcendence and renewal.

This fall the LSU Museum of Art presents Southern Gothic: Literary Intersections with Art from The Johnson Collection. Drawing from the celebrated holdings of The Johnson Collection in Spartanburg, South Carolina, this exhibition explores how visual artists have grappled with the American South’s layered history through a lens long cultivated in Southern literature.

Originally curated as a collaboration between The Johnson Collection and Wofford College, also in Spartanburg, the show examines how nineteenth- and twentieth-century artists employed potent visual language to transcribe the tensions between the South’s idyllic aura and its historical realities. Using Southern Gothic literary traditions as inspiration, the grouping considers how artists translate into visual form the same tensions found in the writings of William Faulkner, Flannery O'Connor, Tennessee Williams, and Toni Morrison. Often described as a mood rather than a strict genre, Southern Gothic blends elements of horror, romance, decay, spirituality, and dark humor. In painting, printmaking, and sculpture, these sensibilities emerge as evocative landscapes, charged domestic interiors, allegorical scenes, stereotypical antebellum imagery, and portraits that hint at psychological depth and social complexity.

The core group of artworks has been expanded to engage Louisiana’s distinctive cultural environments, layered histories, and enduring traditions. Objects from The Johnson Collection are placed in conversation with selections from LSUMOA’s permanent collection and significant loans from the Louisiana State Museums system, the Newcomb Art Museum at Tulane University, the renowned Roger Houston Ogden Collection, and art collector Jeremy Simien. This expanded framework creates a dynamic dialogue between regional voices and the broader scope of Southern art history.

Together, the objects illuminate how artists have negotiated myth and memory, confronting the South’s romanticized imagery alongside its difficult and often contradictory realities.

Founded in 2002, The Johnson Collection has grown into a distinguished holding of more than 1,400 objects spanning multiple centuries that trace the cultural evolution of the American South. The organization champions the pivotal role Southern art plays within the national narrative and is dedicated to elevating historically under-recognized voices through thoughtfully curated publications and exhibitions that continually reassess and expand the story of Southern art.

LSU PARTNERSHIPS CURATORIAL PROJECTS

A selection of sculptures crafted from manipulated books by artist and graphic designer Phil Cleaver has been integrated into the Museum’s permanent collection galleries. The display emerged from a spring visit to LSU’s School of Art, during which Cleaver engaged with design students and lectured on branding, typography, and publishing. Widely regarded as one of England’s most eminent graphic designers, Cleaver is the author of What They Didn’t Teach You in Design School, and has impacted the field for over four decades.

The LSUMOA recently established an ongoing partnership with Villa Albertine, a nationwide network for arts and ideas spanning France and the United States that fosters long-lasting cultural exchange. The Museum’s inaugural project took place this spring, when Professor Brendan Harmon, the Emerson Womack Professor of Landscape Architecture at LSU’s College of Art + Design, partnered with Villa Albertine's “Arts in the Age of AI” Resident, Olivain Porry. Together they led student workshops and developed large language models exploring the creolization of speech using artificial intelligence. Students expanded on this work by translating spectrograms of newly generated language into 3D models, several of which were exhibited in May.

SCULPTURE GARDEN MARTIN PAYTON

VISIT THE 6TH FLOOR TERRACE The LSU Museum of Art is thrilled to announce the return of sculpture to the Irene W. Pennington Rooftop Terrace & Sculpture Garden on the Shaw Center’s sixth floor.

Three monumental metal works by Louisiana artist Martin Payton will be on view until mid-2028. Reflecting Payton’s distinctive style and technique, the sculptures draw inspiration from music, African heritage, and his personal aesthetic.

Access to the sixth floor is free and open to the public during the operating hours of Tsunami, the Shaw Center for the Art's rooftop restaurant. Experience exceptional art alongside amazing views of Baton Rouge and the Mississippi River.

CARY SAURAGE ACQUISITIONS The LSU Museum of Art is honored to have received a selection of artworks from the estate of philanthropist and arts patron, Cary Saurage. Through his immense generosity and unwavering support of the humanities in his native Baton Rouge, Cary was a true champion of the arts and a devoted friend of the Museum. His support and presence shaped this institution in lasting ways. While his passing in November 2025 was a profound loss to both the LSUMOA and the community, his legacy continues through this generous gift. We are grateful to have acquired several exceptional works, including an intricately rendered crayon drawing by mid-century Paul Cadmus, N.M. 53, 1967. Crayon on toned paper. Gift of Cary Saurage.

American artist Paul Cadmus, a collage by abstract expressionist Esteban Vicente, and a unique monotype by renowned Louisiana artist John T. Scott. Now installed in the permanent collection galleries, these objects, along with other bequests, represent a lasting reflection of Cary’s vision, generosity, and love of the arts, ensuring his memory remains an enduring part of the museum.

EDWARD PRAMUK EXHIBITION In spring 2027, the Museum will present A Dream about the Real: Art by Edward Pramuk, which will include rarely exhibited paintings and drawings, and new acquisitions from the estate of Cary Saurage and the Boutté and Robinson Collection. A pivotal American abstract expressionist, Pramuk studied printmaking and drawing at the Akron Art Institute in his home state of Ohio, before earning a master’s degree at Kent State University. He taught painting, drawing, and design at the LSU School of Art for thirty-five years, retiring in 2000.

PENNINGTON FAMILY FOUNDATION GRANT Aligned with the LSU Museum of Art’s mission to connect art, education, and community, the exhibition Daphnis and Chloe and Other Lovers: Lithographs by Marc Chagall became a platform for meaningful student engagement and creative learning.

Under the leadership of Curator of Education and Public Programs Dr. Callie Smith, LSU student education assistants were trained to lead tours and facilitate hands-on workshops, expanding the museum’s capacity to serve school groups. Thanks to generous support from the Pennington Family Foundation, elementary and high school students experienced the exhibition through interdisciplinary activities, including poetry writing inspired by the story of Daphnis and Chloe and a kitchen lithography project that introduced printmaking in an accessible way. This support directly advanced the museum’s educational mission—providing opportunities for young audiences to engage with art, build creative confidence, and see themselves reflected in the stories and processes behind the works on view.

EDUCATION & MENTORSHIP OUR TIGERS OUR IMPACT PANEL DISCUSSION Student empowerment is at the heart of the LSU Museum of Art's Education Department. This was clear during the panel Our Tigers Our Impact in April 2026.

Led by Curator of Education Dr. Callie Smith, this interdisciplinary team of LSU students represents Biological Sciences, Psychology, Digital Arts, Art History, Coastal and Environmental Sciences, and Studio Arts. Guided by values of connection, curiosity, and accessibility, these students are crucial to delivering our mission through tours, programs, and outreach.
