RECESSIONAL

2025 KEYNOTE SPEAKER

THE HON. PIPER D. GRIFFIN

Louisiana Supreme Court

JusticePiper Griffin (’87) was elected to the Louisiana Supreme Court in December 2020 and joined the bench on Jan. 1, 2021, serving District 7 and representing portions of both Orleans and Jefferson parishes.

Prior to joining the bench of the state’s highest court, she served as a judge for the Orleans Parish Civil District Court for nearly 20 years, two of which she served as Chief Judge. She got her first experience on the bench in 1999 when the Louisiana Supreme Court appointed her to serve as a judge pro tempore to fill an unexpired term on the New Orleans Civil District Court. She practiced law in the New Orleans area for 14 years, focusing on casualty litigation, before joining the bench.

“My daily goal, both professionally and personally, is to lead by example with integrity,” said Justice Griffin. “I aim to inspire those who follow by dedicating my public service to making a difference.”

Justice Griffin is an active volunteer in the community who is passionate about serving the legal profession. She serves as vice president of the Louisiana Judicial Council Foundation/National Bar Association and secretary of the American Judges Association. She also previously served as second vice president of the Louisiana Association of District Court Judges and president of the Fourth and Fifth Circuit Judges Association.

Justice Griffin has been honored with numerous awards for her service and impact, including the 2020 Thomas Jefferson Justice by the People Award from the American Board of Trial Advocates; 2019 Sarah J. Harper Humanitarian Award, which was given during the annual Thurgood Marshall luncheon by the National Bar Association Judicial Council; 2019 First District Missionary Society Women’s Department Woman of the Year Award; 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Greater New Orleans Louis A. Martinet Legal Society; and the 2003 Ernest N. Morial Judicial Pacesetter Award.

A lifelong resident of New Orleans, Justice Griffin is a graduate of Xavier University Preparatory School (now St. Katharine Drexel Preparatory School). She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1984, and her law degree from LSU Law in 1987.

FACULTY AND STAFF AWARDS

PROFESSOR OF THE YEAR

PROFESSOR THOMAS C. GALLIGAN JR. Dodson & Hooks Endowed Chair in Maritime Law, James Huntington and Patricia Kleinpeter Odom Professorship, Edwin W. Edwards Distinguished Professorship

"Returning to teaching full time has been one of the best decisions I've ever made. Thanks to all who picked me, and thanks most to my students—you are why I am here."

ADJUNCT PROFESSOR OF THE YEAR

HON. GUY HOLDRIDGE (RET.)

Louisiana Court of Appeal, First Circuit

"Congratulations to the Class of 2025, who have continued to focus on their academic and career goals with good humor and great patience. It was my honor to teach and spend time with this outstanding class."

STAFF MEMBER OF THE YEAR

NORMA MARSH

Coordinator of Academic Area II and Energy Law Coordinator

"I encounter so many students who are navigating the tough challenges of law school with grace, while still volunteering, and doing everything they can to have a positive impact on our community. It's my pleasure to help them in their journey in any small way I can."

LSU PAUL M. HEBERT LAW CENTER

FACULTY SALUTE

LEE ANN WHEELIS LOCKRIDGE

David Weston Robinson Professorship, McGlinchey Stafford Professorship

When Lee Ann Wheelis Lockridge joined the faculty of the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center 20 years ago, the Texas native wasn’t sure if she was making the right move. “I honestly didn’t have any idea how long I’d stay—either in this career or at LSU,” she recalled.

As Lockridge now begins her retirement—or her “preretirement,” as her brother suggests—she said there’s a simple reason why she has spent nearly her entire academic career at LSU Law.

“There is no doubt at all: It’s the people,” she said. “I couldn’t have asked for better colleagues through the years, and there’s nothing I have valued more than having the opportunity to make a lasting, positive impact on the trajectory of my students’ lives and careers.”

At LSU, Lockridge has taught all fields of intellectual property law as well as first-year Contracts; in IP she has used both traditional course models and practice simulations. Her moot court teams have progressed to the national tournament multiple times, and she co-coached the national champion Lefkowitz Trademark Moot Court team in 2019. In the recent words of an alumnus, she “has trained much of the next generation of IP attorneys in Louisiana,” although some are certainly in Texas and other states as well.

But her most significant contributions were perhaps also her most unexpected. When she was named interim dean in December 2019, shortly after then-LSU Law Dean Thomas C. Galligan Jr. was tapped to lead LSU as interim president, she was told to expect to serve for about “six to nine months.” Yet due to upheavals beginning with COVID-19 in early 2020, Lockridge had led LSU Law for three and a half years by the time Dean Alena M. Allen arrived in the summer of 2023.

“Professor Lockridge provided steady and compassionate leadership during the pandemic. She helped guide the Law Center through a period of profound uncertainty, and we emerged stronger because of her,” Allen said. “The resilience and adaptability we developed under her leadership continue to shape our community today.”

Despite the unprecedented challenges that began with the pandemic, LSU Law successfully navigated the period. After managing remote and hybrid learning, it increased enrollment, improved average incoming student credentials, added flexible courtroom spaces, and expanded the number of clinics, among other advances.

“Since then, the Law Center has continued moving ahead, with fresh faces among our leadership, faculty, and staff,” Lockridge said. “I’ll enjoy watching the school’s further progress and hope to stay in touch with former students and colleagues from where I land next.”
