Girl Talk Magazine 2023

Page 1

DearPotentialMember, DearPotentialMember,

I am so thrilled that you have chosen to participate in primary recruitment this year at LSU! When coming to college, I immediately knew in my heart that I wanted to be a part of something bigger than myself and join a sorority. I am a first-generation sorority woman, so I really had no idea what to expect going into recruitment. The Girl Talk magazine was my go-to throughout the entire recruitment process, giving me all the information, tips, & tricks I needed to feel prepared & comfortable.

Just two years ago, I was in the same position you are in now. Perfectly curating my outfits for each round, calling my mom after each event to give her an update, & anxiously awaiting outside the doors that would become my forever home. As you go through the recruitment process, I want you all to remember my favorite phrase, “be the light". To be the light is to be your most authentic, joyous, and confident self. When you are the light, you may find a future friend, or maybe even a role model in each sorority you visit. The women I met while going through recruitment have inspired me to become the woman I am today. Hold on to each minute you have throughout the recruitment process because it will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the woman you become in the future.

The women in our Panhellenic community are the most remarkable women I have ever met and will truly forever hold a place in my heart. These women value service & sisterhood in ways I have never experienced before. As soon as I joined the Panhellenic community, I was welcomed with open arms and unconditional love. The Panhellenic women in our community have pushed me to become my best self and pursue leadership positions I never would have thought myself capable of.

I am so excited for each of you to start the next phase of your life, college, and that you chose to make Panhellenic a part of it. Right now starts the beginning of the best next four years of your life. Embrace all of the opportunities that college and Panhellenic will bring you. Each and every one of you is so unique and embodies what our Panhellenic community stands for. YOU are our future, and we could not be more proud to welcome you home.

My experiences as a Panhellenic woman have shaped me into the woman I am today. The forever friendships, endless opportunities, and constant support system make me fall more and more in love with our Panhellenic community each day. These past two years have made the largest impact on my heart, and I can’t wait to see what the next two will bring. I wish you the best of luck throughout the recruitment process, and I absolutely cannot wait to see the impact each of you will make in our Panhellenic community.

What is the Panhellenic Council at LSU?

The Louisiana State University Panhellenic Council (PHC) is the governing body of 14 sororities on campus. As such, it establishes guidelines, facilitates recruitment, and fosters the growth and development of the sorority community. The purpose of the council is to guide and support sorority relations within our university, to further outstanding intellectual accomplishment and sound scholarship, and to cooperate with the college administration in the maintenance of high social standards. PHC also compiles rules governing recruitment, new member periods, and initiation on campus. Its purpose is to create an environment of unity and fairness.

What is A Gamma Chi?

Your Recruitment Counselor, referred to as a Gamma Chi (GX), is an undergraduate Panhellenic member at LSU. Gamma Chis disaffiliate from their chapters during recruitment and will constantly be able to help a Potential New Member through the recruitment process, whether it is down the row during events or over the phone at the end of the day. Your Gamma Chi will be there to help you make decisions and be your sidekick during the entire week. She has been through recruitment on both sides and will be there for you every step of the way!

What Can My Gamma Chi Do?

Your Gamma Chi will be a confidential listener and friend throughout the week. She has your best interest at heart and will guide you through the decision-making process. She will be on the row during Recruitment and always willing to help. Don't hesitate to ask for help from any Gamma Chi on the row!

Your Gamma Chi CANNOT make any decisions for you and have contact with or reveal her own chapter affiliation.

Delegates Panhellenic

What is a Delegate?

Our Panhellenic Delegates serve as liaisons between their individual chapters sororities and the Panhellenic Executive Council. By attending weekly meetings, spearheading down the row events, and volunteering where needed, these women help direct their sororities in working together as a Panhellenic community.

What is NPC?

The National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) is the umbrella organization for the 26 international women’s fraternities and sororities. NPC provides support and advocacy for the advancement of the sorority experience. For more information about NPC, please visit www.npcwomen.org

Sorority Life

It is hard to imagine what being a sorority member is all about. Most members will admit that they found sorority membership to be a more significant and serious part of their lives than they first imagined. Our sororities believe strongly in many of the same standards. To help you better understand what it is like to be a member, our chapter presidents have provided their own recruitment advice and "words of wisdom" on sorority life and the recruitment process.

6

BenefitstoBeingaSororityWoman

Networking

Recruitment in itself is a networking experience that allows young women the opportunity to effectively communicate and present themselves in a sophisticated social environment. LSU Greek Life offers its members a lifetime of connections with both students and alumnae inside and outside of their chapters. The Panhellenic community provides numerous opportunities for leadership, which encourages young women to meet new people and create meaningful relationships as well as build their future resumes. Joining the Greek community allows various opportunities to connect with other students, faculty, and alumnae at LSU

Active Membership

Being in a sorority at LSU can help you to feel at home despite the seemingly enormous size of the university. Some easy ways to get involved in your organization are joining committees, applying for leadership positions, living in the house, eating lunch at the house, and branching outside of your comfort zone You only get four years as an active member of your sorority, and you'll look back on them forever - so make the most of it!

Philanthropic Commitment

As Greek women at LSU we take pride in our philanthropic commitments. Our chapters individually serve their own philanthropies as well as lend a helping hand to each other down the row We believe strongly in our mission to serve, which makes uniting as a Panhellenic Community for an organization like Days for Girls all the more special It is a privilege to work together as Panhellenic women, and it truly exemplifies our dedication to service and philanthropy!

Academic Achievement

Upon entering college, maintaining a specific grade point average can seem like a scary feat, but surrounding yourself with over 300 women who will offer constant advice and words of encouragement truly makes a world of a difference Workshops, study hours, study nights, and the support of fellow chapter members fosters academic success, which is a very important advantage of going Greek at LSU The girls surrounding you will always push you to do your best and achieve what you set your mind to!

Campus Involvement

Joining a Greek organization is the perfect start to getting involved on campus. In every chapter, you will find members that are a part of so many different organizations across campus and around Baton Rouge! The Panhellenic community is supportive of all that its members do and going Greek is an amazing way to find these opportunities Personal growth and chances for involvement are endless when working with your Panhellenic sisters!

Risk Management

By implementing guidelines and policies during social events or any offcampus event, risk management allows each sorority and fraternity to ensure the continued safety of its members and the endurance of the local chapter and national organization We strive to maintain the highest standards and procedures for the betterment of each LSU chapter and to further educate members on safety protocols and practices Risk management is a priority in all aspects of Greek Life that not only educates members regarding alcohol, drugs, etc, but also provides valuable life lessons for years to come!

6

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Dear Potential New Member, Dear Potential New Member,

As a member of the Panhellenic community, I understand how crucial it is to be able to express your authentic self during and after recruitment. This group of Directors and Vice Presidents of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion will work tirelessly to make this space inclusive. Please know you are never alone, and you are always heard!

12
Love,

Primary Recruitment

How it Works

At the end of every round, Potential New Members (PNMs) will prioritize the sororities whose events they have attended, in preferential order. At the same time, the sororities are submitting their selection of PNMs to invite back in preferential order. Each PNM’s preferences and sorority’s selections are processed to generate invitations to the next round. An hour before the events begin for the next round, PNMs will receive their schedule of events for that day. A PNM will not know which of the 12 sororities have invited her back until she receives her schedule.

For example, after the end of Round 1, PNMs will make selections. The maximum amount of sororities a PNM can attend during Round 2 is 9. Therefore a PNM will ‘cluster’ the 9 she would “LIKE” to return to as # 1 and rank the remaining 3 in preferential order, 2, 3, and 4. This does NOT guarantee that a PNM will receive invitations to her top 9. This simply allows the National Panhellenic Conference Recruitment Specialist to guide sororities on the number of Potential New Members they may invite. The purpose of this is to create a culture of equality for invitations among sororities.

This process will continue for Rounds 2 and 3. PNMs may only prioritize, they may not ‘delete’ any sororities.

A PNM may only prioritize sororities that she has attended events for that round and cluster up to the maximum number that a PNM can visit the next round. The maximum amount for Round 2 is 9, Round 3 is 6, and Round 4 is 2. In some cases, a PNM may not have attended the maximum amount, therefore, she will only make selections from the number of sororities she has visited. A PNM may only prioritize the sororities that she visited in the previous round. She will then cluster her remaining options to the max number of events allowed for the next round.

Advice for a Successful Recruitment

Remember that sorority membership is for life

It’s your choice. Don’t listen to your friends, your parents, or other potential members who have stereotyped the sororities. It is an honor to be a part of LSU Panhellenic and each sorority requires high membership qualifications. Keep an open mind and be thankful for each invitation you receive. There are girls who are just like you in every sorority.

Comments should be kept to yourself.

If you don’t care for a particular sorority, make sure that you’re not basing your opinion on one girl you met in the sorority or on someone else’s negative opinions. If you’re still unsure about a particular sorority, do not share your opinion with others. It should be a private decision. You never know when your least favorite choice could be your friend’s favorite choice or last option.

Take care of yourself.

Don’t be afraid to use the bathroom during an event. They will not hold it against you or assume that you’re not mingling with them. You can ask for more water when your thirsty and make sure to have a snack during these long days!

14

AdviceforaSuccessful Recruitment

Temperatures are HOT!

Don’t underestimate the heat when planning your outfits. Your makeup is going to melt off, so put it on conservatively and bring a powder case. Don’t wear too much body lotion; it will only make you perspire more. Coffee filters work wonders! They absorb without leaving pieces on you like tissues do. They’ll be provided on the row for you to use.

This is YOUR experience.

Fraternity recruitment begins the week of sorority recruitment. If you happen to get acknowledged by a fraternity man on the row, try your best to go about your business. Please find a Gamma Chi or Exec member if you become uncomfortable in a situation.

Avoid any dangerous situations by using the buddy system on campus. Don’t walk alone, especially at night. Sorority row has additional security officers at night, but don’t underestimate danger. Always be aware of your surroundings. It is usually hard to find a parking place on campus, so be sure to plan accordingly.

Timeliness is important.

Be on time, 10 minutes early if possible. It is so crucial to attend your events on time. If you miss an event without a legitimate excuse, you will be dismissed from recruitment. Even with an excuse, you are missing out on opportunities to meet sorority women and other girls who are participating in recruitment. It is up to the sorority to give a potential member a courtesy invitation when they have missed the chance to get to know them better. Traffic, parking trouble, and illness without a doctor’s note are not legitimate excuses.

15

ICE WATER Round One

The Goal

To learn about each sorority and get acquainted with their sisterhoods! For this round only, you will be with your Gamma Chi and all the members of your group.

What This Will Look Like

You and the girls in your Gamma Chi group will join your Gamma Chi in person. Your Gamma Chi will go through a series of videos for each sorority, the same videos you watched on your own the day prior. Make sure to take notes and keep track of which sorority is which! Look for things you value: sisterhood, philanthropy, and what you want in a sorority.

What Follows

After this round of events, you will have the opportunity to prioritize which chapters to

PHILANTHROPY

Round Two

The Goal

To learn about the sororities’ philanthropies and what they do to serve the community.

What This Will Look Like

Philanthropy will be relaxed. You will get a chance to get to know the girls you meet during the event. You could meet up to four active members of a chapter each round. Be prepared to talk about the chapter’s philanthropy and any of your service/philanthropic opportunities and experiences

What Follows

After this round of events, you will have the opportunity to prioritize which chapters you would like to return to. You may only prioritize the ones you visited. Each PNM will receive invitations from sororities that can vary from 6 to 1 or 2. The same philosophy applies as in round one. Be optimistic and excited about the sororities that invite you back!

SISTERHOOD Round Three

The Goal

To learn about what membership in each chapter might look like, sisterhood events, etc.

What This Will Look Like

Will be fun yet educational and more serious than previous rounds. Be prepared to learn about living in the house, their social and sisterhood events, and what the sorority stands for!

What Follows

After this round of events, you will have the opportunity to prioritize chapters to which you would like to return. You may only prioritize the ones you visited. Each PNM will receive invitations from sororities, either 1 or 2. The same philosophy from previous rounds applies.

PREFERENCE Round Four

The Goal

To learn why each chapter member’s sorority means so much to them and get a sense of whether you can see yourself as a part of their sorority for life.

What This Will Look Like

Preference will be the most serious round. Most sororities will have 1-2 girls meet you. Be prepared to listen more than speak! This round can be emotional, so be mindful of the sorority members’ heart-felt poems, readings, and songs they may sing.

What Follows

VISIT MAX OF 2 SORORITIES

45 MINUTE EVENTS

After this round of events, you will rank the sororities you attended. During selections, if you rank all sororities whose preference events you attended, you are guaranteed a bid from one of those sororities. So, if you attend 2 preference events, and rank both of those houses, you will receive a bid from one! Once receiving a bid, whether or not you accept that invitation to join, you are committed to them for one year and may not go through Spring Recruitment. So, if you cannot see yourself in that sorority, do not include it in your preference ranking. Furthermore, if you have no intention of pledging/initiating with that sorority, do not list them in your preference selections because you may be limiting another PNM who does have hopes of receiving a bid from that sorority!

Recruitment is a unique opportunity. It is a chance for you to truly make a choice that is for you and only you that will continue to shape the rest of your life. Every house offers such a special experience for each of its members, but you have to make connections and find the one that is true to what you are looking for and hope to be. Recruitment Advice from Amaya

There are three pieces of advice I would give to Potential New Members going into recruitment. The first is to be your most authentic self: you will find a house that loves you for who you truly are. The second is to search for a house that you can see supporting you past your four years in college: the house that displays the qualities and values you want to strengthen or implement in your life. The third is to enjoy the process. Recruitment can seem daunting, but you will be networking and building relationships with so many amazing Panhellenic women down the row. Trust the process, and everything will work out the way it’s supposed to!

The Alternative Result

You may not receive a bid even though you listed sororities on your preference card, due to:

1. Not being matched to a sorority & not maximizing your options.

2. Withdrawing from recruitment before signing a preference card.

You still have an opportunity to participate in Continuous Open Bidding, also referred to as COB, in both the fall and spring. Continuous Open Bidding events are typically less structured and provide women a more relaxed environment to meet the chapter women. Not all chapters are eligible to participate in COB. You can register with Panhellenic on our website or visit chapters individual Instagrams and websites to find information about their participation and upcoming COB events.

We highly encourage that you continue to seek involvement in other areas of LSU. Contact Campus Life for more information on the 350+ LSU student organizations at: www.lsu.edu/campuslife.

Rules and Policies

Panhellenic strives to create a process that is equal and fair both PNMs and Chapters. If you have questions or concerns with the recruitment process, you may contact your Gamma Chi, the Greek Life Office, or the Panhellenic President with concerns.

Recruitment Do's and Don'ts

From August 10, 2023 through the accepting of bids, no PNM shall visit a sorority house except for approved events. The PNM and sororities must honor all invitations to recruitment functions. In case of illness or other emergency, Panhellenic will notify the chapter with an official excuse.

PNMs are expected to be on time for all meetings and events.

PNMs must provide their own transportation to and from all events. All chapters are within walking distance from campus.

PNMs must not walk behind sorority houses during events.

PNMs must not park at the Lod Cook Alumni Conference Center or Hotel, the Systems building, or behind the sorority houses. Each round, PNMs must maximize their options by priority ranking all sororities after attending that round, with the exception of final selections following preference round.

Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement

Introduction: This is a COPY of the MRABA that you will sign after your last event of Preference round.

Agree to binding electronic contract and electronic signature. Initial each statement:

This form is called the Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement, or “MRABA.” I understand that it is a contract with the National Panhellenic Conference (“NPC”) and both parties will have access to the signed agreement.

ELECTRONIC SIGNATURE ONLY

___________

I consent to this electronic contract. I agree to electronically sign the MRABA. These terms are defined by the Electronic Signatures and Global and National Commerce Act (“E-Sign”) and the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act (“UETA”). I agree that this MRABA and my electronic signature is valid, enforceable, and binding under E-Sign and UETA.

Part 1: Withdrawing or Continuing in Recruitment. Initial one of the following options:

________ I want to withdraw from Recruitment. I will not join a sorority now. I could join a sorority in the future by participating in the continuous open bidding (“COB”) process. I will not complete this contract. (Next Step: Continue to Part 5).

________ I am continuing in Recruitment (Next Step: Continue to Part 2).

Part 2: Show that you understand the ranking process. Initial each statement:

By signing the MRABA, I understand and agree that each of these statements is true:

________ I am willing to accept an invitation to membership (“bid”) from any sorority I list in Part 4.

________ I will rank each sorority in the order of my preference for receiving a bid.

________ If I attended a sorority’s preference event, and I would not accept a bid from that sorority, I do not have to rank that sorority.

I understand that if I choose to rank fewer sororities, I might not receive a bid through Recruitment.

Part 3: Show that you understand the effect of submitting the MRABA. Initial each statement below.

By signing the MRABA, I understand and agree that each of these statements is true:

After I submit this form, I cannot change my rankings. I cannot add or delete any sororities to my rankings.

If I do not receive a bid from any sorority I ranked, I understand I am eligible to join any sorority later, through the COB process. I understand that not all sororities will recruit through COB.

_______

If I do receive a bid from a sorority I ranked, but I choose not to accept that bid, I understand that I am not eligible to join any other sorority on this campus until the start of the next Recruitment.

Part 4: Rank your preferences. Rank in order of your preference for receiving a bid.

1st Preference:

2nd Preference: _____________________________________

Part 5: Sign the contract.

I have read and understand this MRABA. By signing or submitting this MRABA, I agree to be bound by its terms. I agree that completing this form electronically has the same legal effect of completing a paper version.

I have never been initiated into an NPC sorority. I understand that if I join an NPC sorority and choose to become an initiated member of that sorority, I cannot join another NPC member organization regardless of any circumstances.

What Does MRABA Mean?

The document on the opposite page is the Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement (MRABA). The MRABA is a legal, binding agreement that is effective for one calendar year. By signing this document you, as a Potential New Member, agree that you are willing to accept a bid for membership from any sorority that you rank on the MRABA.

When Do I Complete This?

If you receive an invitation to the Preference round, you will make your final selection at the conclusion of your last event. Here you will rank the chapter(s) you visited in a preferential order using the PNM Companion App. Please note that once the MRABA has been turned in electronically, it cannot be altered or changed.

Prior to signing the MRABA, you have several options to consider. We suggest that you thoroughly reflect on these before signing your MRABA.

MRABA OPTIONS

You may choose NOT to complete the MRABA and withdraw from recruitment. If you choose this option, you are eligible to accept a bid for membership from any sororities participating in Continuous Open Bidding throughout the academic year. You may choose to list any sorority whose preference event you attended and from whom you are willing to accept a bid. Please note that you should NOT rank a sorority on your MRABA that you are absolutely not willing to accept a bid from. If you match with a sorority that you listed on your MRABA, it is important to note that you are bound to that sorority for one calendar year (August 2023-August 2024), regardless of whether you officially join the chapter or not. You may choose to limit your choices to just one sorority whose preference round event you attended. You must understand that if you chose to single intentional preference (SIP), then you are not guaranteed to receive a bid for membership. Only Potential New Members who maximize their options and list ALL of the chapters that they attended during the preference round are guaranteed to receive a bid for membership during Primary Recruitment.

If you do not receive an invitation to membership (a bid) from any of the sororities that you have listed, you are eligible for Continuous Open Bidding (COB).
