NCAA CHAMPIONSIPS & THE SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE

Setting the Standard for Intercollegiate Athletics in Swimming and Diving

Over the course of several decades, the Southeastern Conference has been a constant force in swimming and diving. During the 2022 Men’s NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, two schools in the SEC took top-10 spots in the final team rankings. Florida and Georgia finished third and eighth, respectively, with LSU rounding out the top-15. Alongside the three top finishers, Tennessee and Texas A&M earned enough points to close out the year within the top-20 nationally. LSU’s finish at No. 15 was the highest finish for the men’s squad since 1997. LSU’s Brooks Curry won the first national title for LSU since 1988. He claimed double titles in the 50- and 100-free. To round out the 32 teams that qualified, the SEC also saw the likes of Missouri, Auburn and Kentucky compete for the national title.

At the 2022 Women’s NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships, Alabama and Tennessee earned spots within the top 10 teams at the event. The Virginia squad outscored the second-best team by nearly 150 points to take home the national championship. LSU and its counterparts like Kentucky, Florida, Georgia, Missouri, Arkansas and South Carolina rounded out the top-32.

MEN’S NOTES

• The SEC has had 11 NCAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships titles: Tennessee - 1978; Florida - 1983 & 1985; Auburn - 1997, 1999, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009.

• 2022 marked the 53rd consecutive year that the SEC has had at least one team in the top 10 of the NCAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships. The SEC has placed a total of 145 teams in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships since 1969. The 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused a gap year in this trend.

• SEC athletes in men’s swimming & diving have captured a total of 196 individual NCAA titles.

WOMEN’S NOTES

• The SEC has had 14 NCAA Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships titles: Florida – 1982, 2010; Georgia – 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2013, 2014, 2016; Auburn – 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007.

• With Texas A&M earning the third spot at the 2018 NCAA Championships, an SEC school had finished on the podium in the Championships every year since 1999. That streak was broken when Stanford, Cal and Michigan took the top-3 spots in 2019.

• Since 1982, the SEC has placed 108 teams in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships.

• 251 individual NCAA titles have been captured by SEC athletes.

HIGHLIGHTS

• Brooks Curry became LSU’s first national champion since Mark Andrews won the 50-free in 1988. Curry won double national titles in the 50-free and 100-free, breaking school records in both performances. In the 50-free, he touched the wall first with a time of 18.56 and in the 100-free claimed first with a time of 40.84. Curry became the only swimmer in program history to win two individual championships at all, or in the same season.

• Veteran fifth-year senior Juan Celaya-Hernandez continued to show why he is the most decorated diver in school history during his final collegiate season. The Mexico native was awarded the SEC Championship Male Diver of the Meet after winning his sixth and seventh SEC title on three-meter and platform. At the NCAA Championships, Celaya-Hernandez earned NCAA First-Team AllAmerica honors on both springboards after earning bronze on onemeter and on three-meter.

• The LSU men scored all of their points across three athletes and

yielded 85 points for a 15th-place finish. The Tigers’ finish was the highest finish since LSU placed 14th in 1997.

• LSU swimmers combined to break eight school records in Coach Rick Bishop’s first season. National Champion Brooks Curry broke three individually and was a part of both superior relay times. Additionally Emil Hassling broke the 200 IM record, Jolee Liles broke the 1650-free record, and Jenna Bridges lowered the 500-free school record.

• At the Women’s NCAA Championship, LSU had five representatives with four divers and one swimmer. Montserrat Gutierrez Lavenant garnered the highest finish, placing 13th on one-meter and 14th on platform. With two top-16 finishes, she earned two All-American honors, one on each event. Anne Tuxen also earned All-American status with a 16th-place finish on platform.

• The Tigers enjoyed their time in Knoxville, Tenn., where the 2022 SEC Championships were held, closing the meet behind several broken records and podium finishes. Brooks Curry finished with two silver medals and the illustrious gold in the 100-free.
