PAUL D. COREIL, PH.D. LSU of Alexandria Chancellor All of us from LSU of Alexandria congratulate you for reaching this significant milestone in your life – graduating from college! Completing the requirements for a college degree can only result from substantial sacrifice, dedication, and hard work. So, today, we celebrate your accomplishments and thank everyone responsible for helping you reach this goal. We are excited and honored to celebrate this graduation at the Rapides Parish Coliseum without limitations.

The past 2+ years have been extremely challenging due to COVID-19; however, today, our focus is on you, our LSUA students who exhibited grit and did not allow obstacles to stop your hopes and dreams! We have been amazed and inspired by the exceptional resilience you showed in dealing with COVID-19 disruptions, a tornado on campus, and two major hurricanes that impacted classes and campus life. It has been an honor and privilege to serve as your chancellor during these challenging times.

We know that this is only the beginning of many accomplishments you will achieve throughout your life. We hope that your experience at LSUA, and the degree you have earned, will enable you to reach your personal and career goals and, at the same time, help make the world a better place for us all!

STEPHEN WRIGHT

Chair, LSU of Alexandria Foundation Board Recently retired from a 37-year career as a senior leader in Catholic healthcare, Stephen Wright’s most recent role with CHRISTUS Health was serving as Senior Vice President of Group Operations and as CEO for CHRISTUS Health Louisiana and Southeast Texas. In this leadership role, he had over 6500 associates, 2000 medical staff members, over ten hospitals, two nursing homes, assisted living facilities, multiple surgery centers, and imaging centers, with nearly 40 corporate entities in all throughout Louisiana and Southeast Texas.

Wright has served as the chair of the Louisiana Hospital Association and served as vice chair of the Louisiana Quality Forum on Health which acts as the state of Louisiana’s HIN. Wright received the 2010 “Champion of Diversity” award and the “National AHA Grass Roots Champion Award” in 2007. Currently, he is serving as President/Board Chair and Co-Founder of a non-profit called Coastal Connection of Louisiana. Coastal Connection provides services both domestically and internationally. Coastal Connection and its partners have provided services in Haiti, Puerto Rico, Nigeria, Uganda, and beyond. With 40 plus years of marriage, he and his wife Mona have two daughters, one son, three grandchildren, and four grand-dogs.

DEGREE WITH HONORS At each commencement, the Chancellor’s Award for “Highest Academic Achievement” is awarded to the graduate receiving an associate degree and to the graduate receiving a baccalaureate degree with the highest GPA, provided that more than 50 percent of the total hours attempted in pursuit of the degree have been earned at Louisiana State University of Alexandria.

Graduates receiving baccalaureate degrees may receive their degrees summa cum laude, magna cum laude, or cum laude.

The determination for these designations is based on the student’s cumulative grade point average and the completion of at least 48 institutional hours to qualify for Latin Honors.

Degrees are awarded summa cum laude to students whose grade point averages are between 3.90 and 4.0; magna cum laude to students whose grade point averages are between 3.70 to 3.89; and cum laude to students whose grade point averages are between 3.50 and 3.69.

Students graduating with honors are recognized at the commencement ceremony by the honors cords they wear.

Students graduating summa cum laude wear gold cords; those graduating magna cum laude wear silver cords; and those graduating cum laude wear white cords.

GAMMA BETA PHI - HONOR GRADUATES Gamma Beta Phi is a national collegiate honor and service organization. Students must have an overall 3.0 grade point average to be invited to become members. The gold satin stole worn by graduates signifies that they are members in good standing.

THE MACE A mace is the traditional university symbol of educational authority and institutional identity and is presented at formal university rituals and traditions, such as commencement ceremonies. The LSUA mace is forty-eight inches tall and weighs approximately ten pounds. It is crafted of wood from a fallen live oak tree native to the Louisiana State University of Alexandria campus and solid brass. The brass spacers that collectively form the shaft are engraved with milestone dates in the history of the university.

The mace is topped with a four-sided acorn, calling attention to the fiftieth anniversary in 2010, the service of Louisiana State University of Alexandria to Louisiana and Central Louisiana in particular, desirable attributes imparted in graduates of Louisiana State University of Alexandria and embossed figures depicting “One World – Diverse – Intertwined.”

The acorn is crowned with the official LSUA oak tree seal with the historical blue and gold banner insignia. Alexandria resident and master craftsman Glen Armand crafted and donated the mace in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Louisiana State University of Alexandria. The LSUA mace was first presented to the faculty, staff and students at the closing commencement exercises of the fiftieth anniversary, December 16, 2010.
