MESSAGE FROM THE CHANCELLOR Paul D. Coreil, Ph.D. LSU of Alexandria Chancellor Congratulations on completing your academic journey! The faculty and staff of LSUA are incredibly proud of you for reaching this significant milestone in your life. Graduating from college reflects the sacrifices, dedication, and hard work you have invested in your future. Today, we celebrate those accomplishments and extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported you in achieving this incredible goal. You have exhibited grit and overcome obstacles to pursue your hopes, dreams, and career goals. We are proud and inspired by your resilience over the past few years. Serving as your chancellor during these challenging times across our state, nation, and world has been and continues to be an honor and privilege. Your hard-earned degree and experience at LSUA will help you reach your personal and professional goals, helping to make the world a better place for all of us. As you move into the next chapter of your life, carrying the knowledge and skills acquired along the way, we are confident you will achieve many remarkable accomplishments throughout your career. COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER Quinnie Jenkins Director of Community Engagement Delta Air Lines Quinnie Jenkins is a communications and aviation professional who serves as Director of Community Engagement at Delta Air Lines where she leads the company’s global, nonprofit charitable contributions strategy as well as the organization’s volunteerism initiatives for its nearly 100,000 employees. She also serves as Vice President of The Delta Air Lines Foundation. Prior to joining Delta, Quinnie spent 11 years on Southwest Airlines’ Corporate & Social Responsibility team. There, she cultivated strategic nonprofit relationships, managing a robust portfolio of charitable and civic partnerships, and leading both the national relationships and employee engagement teams. Before she made her way to Southwest Airlines, Quinnie worked in Public Relations and Community Engagement at AirTran Airways. During the early years of her career, she spent time working in communications, marketing and public relations in the healthcare and local news industries, respectively. A native of New Orleans, LA., Quinnie graduated from Archbishop Chapelle High School in Metairie, LA. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism from The University of Southern Mississippi. Quinnie’s longtime commitment to the community has included service on the Board of Directors of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Advisory Boards of both the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and Usher’s New Look Foundation. She currently serves on the board of directors for the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame and Compass Behavioral Health.

She has also given her time to numerous charitable organizations such as Covenant House, Trees Atlanta, Meals on Wheels, March of Dimes, Hands on Atlanta, Habitat for Humanity, American Cancer Society and the YWCA of Greater Atlanta. Recognized for both her business and charitable contributions in the community, Quinnie was named a Woman who Means Business by the Atlanta Business Chronicle, a Bridge Builder by Atlanta Technical College, received the Business Leadership Award from Women of Distinction, was named a Woman of Excellence by Atlanta Daily World and was also recognized as one of Atlanta’s 100 Black Women of Influence by the Atlanta Business League.

DEGREE HONORS

THE MACE

At each commencement, the Chancellor’s Award for “Highest Academic Achievement” is awarded to the graduate receiving an associate degree and to the graduate receiving a baccalaureate degree with the highest GPA, provided that more than 50 percent of the total hours attempted in pursuit of the degree have been earned at Louisiana State University of Alexandria.

A mace is the traditional university symbol of educational authority and institutional identity and is presented at formal university rituals and traditions, such as commencement ceremonies. The LSUA mace is forty-eight inches tall and weighs approximately ten pounds. It is crafted of wood from a fallen live oak tree native to the Louisiana State University of Alexandria campus and solid brass. The brass spacers that collectively form the shaft are engraved with milestone dates in the history of the university.

Graduates receiving baccalaureate degrees may receive their degrees summa cum laude, magna cum laude, or cum laude. The determination for these designations is based on the student’s cumulative grade point average and the completion of at least 48 institutional hours to qualify for Latin Honors. Degrees are awarded summa cum laude to students whose grade point averages are between 3.90 and 4.0; magna cum laude to students whose grade point averages are between 3.70 to 3.89; and cum laude to students whose grade point averages are between 3.50 and 3.69. Students graduating with honors are recognized at the commencement ceremony by the honors cords they wear. Students graduating summa cum laude wear gold cords; those graduating magna cum laude wear silver cords; and those graduating cum laude wear white cords. Degree Candidates presented with honors in this program is presumptive evidence and is not to be regarded as conclusive. The mace is topped with a four-sided acorn, calling attention to the fiftieth anniversary in 2010, the service of Louisiana State University of Alexandria to Louisiana and Central Louisiana in particular, desirable attributes imparted in graduates of Louisiana State University of Alexandria and embossed figures depicting: “One World – Diverse – Intertwined.” The acorn is crowned with the official LSUA oak tree seal with the historical blue and gold banner insignia. Alexandria resident and master craftsman Glen Armand crafted and donated the mace in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Louisiana State University of Alexandria. The LSUA mace was first presented to the faculty, staff and students at the closing commencement exercises of the fiftieth anniversary, December 16, 2010.
